You can raft to Pasighat from Tuting, which runs for over 12km, which is a very popular raft route among adventure seekers.

HOW TO REACH TUTING?

Dibrugarh is the nearest airport to reach Tuting, and Murkongselek is the nearest railway station, but both need long drives to arrive at the town. Alternatively, you can rent cabs or take public buses that frequently run from Pasighat.

GORICHEN PEAK

Although technically it cannot be categorized as one of the best places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh, hiking to Gorichen Peak is worth adding to your list of adventures if you are a seasoned hiker or mountaineer looking to get atop the highest peak in Arunachal Pradesh.

arunachal pradesh pass

A sacred peak and a religious site by many locals in the state, hiking Gorichen is not for beginners. If you are an experienced hiker, though, you should try reaching the summit of this stunning mountain peak located between Tawang District and West Kameng District, towering over at almost 7000 meters high.

There are camping options as well, so you can pick your group and get started by experiencing some of the best 360-degree views of the panoramas of the horizon.

BHISMAKNAGAR

If you love a bit of a blend of history, archaeology, nature, and culture, along with an offbeat destination, Bhismaknagar is an ideal choice.

Located in the Lower Dibang Valley District of Arunachal Pradesh, Bhismaknagar is a perfect stop for a few days to get outdoors and enjoy the rugged nature via hiking, biking or walking.

Arunachal Pradesh tourism

This city was founded in the 8th century by King Bhismak, upon whom the town gets its name. In the Hindu Mythology Mahabharata, he is regarded as the father of Rukmini, the first wife of Lord Krishna.

The town is home to a 12th-century fort Bhismak, constructed using burnt bricks, an engineering and technological feat in this remote state area.

You can visit the ruins of this fort when in Bhismaknagar, from where many artefacts were excavated by the archaeologists now available in the museum.

Arunachal Pradesh tourist spots

Bhismaknagar is home to a religious site considered sacred by one of the oldest tribes, Idu Mishmis. There are many hiking trails well-marked for short excursions to camp.

HOW TO REACH DIBRUGARH?

The nearest airport is Mohanbari Airport, located in Dibrugarh in Assam, which is 3 hours away. The Tinsukia Railway Station is the closest. If you are coming from other towns in Arunachal, it is best to hire a cab or drive to reach Bhismaknagar.

If you love oranges as I do, make sure to visit this tiny village in the Lower Dibang Valley. Dambuk, a small town known for its tasty oranges, is one of the best places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh for the fruit and its hiking trails, secluded location amidst stunning landscapes, and the serenity that comes with it.

Arunachal Pradesh famous places

Apart from relaxing, admiring and taking in the beauty around you, there is not much to do in this pretty village.

However, if you want to enjoy some crowds and music, then plan a trip to Dambuk when it hosts the Orange Music festival that creates a festive atmosphere, bringing in the musicians, food-lovers, and party-goers into one place.

HOW TO REACH DAMBUK

The nearest airport to Dambuk is Dibrugarh Airport. The best way to reach is to get a cab via Roing, or arrive at Dibrugarh and take a bus or a taxi.

TALLEY VALLEY

Talley Valley, located close to Ziro, is one of the best spots in Arunachal Pradesh to experience an undisturbed ecosystem. Home to many tiny villages, Talley Valley, is a treasure house of wildlife and dense forests.

arunachal pradesh travel

Check out the Talley Valley Reserve area and the Talley Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the most attractions, home to the elusive clouded leopards.

How about reaching the most remote part of the state? If you dare to go through the long and arduous journey, head to Kaho, a tiny village administered by the Indian Army located near the Indo-China border on the banks of the Lohit River.

This village opens to stunning vistas dotted with snow-capped peaks on all the sides and has only a few households and shops.

Places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh

Visit the local Buddhist monastery, stay with the locals that host you and bowl you over with their warmth and hospitality. Hike along the hills for watching rare and exotic wild birds and soak in the blissful views.

HOW TO REACH KAHO?

The nearest airport is located in Dibrugarh, over 400 km from Kaho. The nearest railway station is at Tinsukia, where it takes about 5 hours to reach. You will have to rent a car from a bigger town like Dibrugarh or Tezu to get to Kaho as there are limited options.

On the banks of the Siang River is Yingkiong, the headquarters of the Upper Siang District and one of the offbeat places in Arunachal Pradesh.

Arunachal Pradesh famous places

The tiny hamlet is blessed with a peaceful ambience, with the Siang dominating the vistas. You can get glimpses of the countryside in Arunachal, which is packed with lush fields, streams, lovely homes, and hills.

There are a few hanging bridges worth checking out. You can enjoy fishing, kayaking, and swimming in the Siang River, and if the favour of the current, rafting may be possible.

You can base in Yingkiong to visit the nearby Mouling National Park and Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary, two of the popular tourist attractions home to hundreds of species of animals and birds.

Yingkiong is home to these tribes Adi, Mishmi and ‘Memba. Staying in homestays run by them will give you insights into their rich traditions and unique culture.

An Insight into Arunachal Pradesh Tourism

Arunachal Pradesh is such a charmer. Adorned with beautiful and unspoilt rivers, lakes, hills and valleys along with opulent wildlife and culture, this Northeastern state is indeed a dream travel destination in India. Arunachal Pradesh shares its southern boundary with Assam, and on its west is Bhutan, whereas, China makes the north and northeast border for the state, and the pretty little Myanmar snuggles the east. It covers a spectacular area of 83,743 sq km that is dotted with numerous rivers, lakes, forests, hill ranges, valleys, grasslands, and sweet little settlements.

One of the major tourism attractions in Arunachal Pradesh is the opportunity for adventure sports. This unperturbed and in a way raw state has powerful rivers like Lohit, Siang and Subansiri that offer incredible river rafting and kayaking experience. On the other hand, the hidden trails and unmatched places challenge trekkers to discover for themselves some surreal trekking destinations. Meanwhile, trails from Bhalukpong to Tawang via Dirang and Bomdila are perfect for motor biking adventures in Arunachal Pradesh.

The state also boasts of a rich wildlife that includes rare species like White Winged Wood Duck. Namdapha, Dibang, Sessa and Pakhui are amongst the most popular wildlife reserves in Arunachal Pradesh that are home to a wide variety of animals, birds, amphibians and reptiles along with varied species of plants and trees. Arunachal is also famous for its orange and apple orchards in Aalo and Bomdila. The state also flaunts its rich orchid plantations as well which are available in more than 1000 varieties. What enriches Arunachal the most is its varied tribes and their distinct culture and traditions. With so many tribes inhabiting the state, a large number of festivals can be witnessed throughout the year.

Along with the famed Hornbill Festival, there are celebrated a plethora of feasts and festivals like Boori Boot, Losar, Solung and Dree by the tribes like Monpa, Adi, Apatani and Mishmi that add to the cultural diversity making the state a much more interesting place to visit. Different tribes in Arunachal Pradesh are skilled in assorted handicraft and handloom arts and cach tribe such as Wangcho indulge in either cane furniture and articles making, jewellery/grass jewellery creation and wood carving. Therefore, when visiting Arunachal Pradesh, shopping for handicraft items is a must thing to do.

Another thing that shall catch the attention of tourists in the state is its cuisine. Unique and sometimes even bizarre with dried squirrel and mouse, Arunachal can be an interesting place to experiment with your appetite. Arunachal is also a treasure trove of history. The Bumla Pass near Tawang holds immense significance for being the high mountain pass from where His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama entered India from Tibet. The Ita Fort in Itanagar also has a lot to tell about the rich history of the state and so does the exotic Dirang Dzong. Arunachal Pradesh is also home to the largest monastery in India which is situated in the ever so serene Tawang. On the next day in Mechuka, we will brace towards the Yarlung Army Camp. It is the final point before the Indo-china border where civilians are permitted to enter without any special permission. Here you can meet the Indian army and hear brave stories about them.

Note: Taking photos and shooting videos is restricted in the area.

On the back way from Yarlung camp, we can stop at a small Hanuman temple. Here you can find the naturally carved face of Lord Hanuman on a rugged mountain cliff.

Thenceforth, drive to the Gurudwara to pay your regards. This Gurudwara has a prayer hall, Langar, and a museum. It was established and managed by an Indian army to commemorate the visit of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji on his journey to Tibet between 1516-1517.

Across the Gurudwara, there is a Guru Nanak Taposthan known to have impressions of Guru Nanak Ji. To enter Taposthan, you need to pass through a narrow passage in the mountain that opens into an enchanting forest by the riverside. And there is a myth that if you are a sinner, you will fail to pass the passage. After spending some time at the riverside hearing the peaceful stem of the river, head back to your stay in Mechuka.

Located crossing the Yargepchu River is the Dorjeeling Village, which has scenic mountain views. It will roughly take 20 to 30 minutes to reach Dorjeeling from Mechuka. A 7 Day Travel Guide and Itinerary for Arunachal Pradesh : Experience the Land of Dawn Lit Mountains

A 7 Day Travel Guide and Itinerary for Arunachal Pradesh : Experience the Land of Dawn Lit Mountains

The land of dawn lit mountains, Arunachal Pradesh , with its vast forest cover, pristine valleys and snow capped Himalayas, is one of India’s best kept secrets. Arunachal Pradesh is located in the North Eastern tip of India and is bordered by three countries, Bhutan , China and Myanmar and two Indian states in the south, Assam and Nagaland. This state, though has gained some popularity among travellers in the recent past, owing to the famous Ziro Festival of Music , it is still far from commercialisation as compared to Himalayan destinations in the northern part of India like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

arunachal state tourism

Travelling to Arunachal Pradesh is about setting on an adventure in true sense where travellers encounter multiple layers of history and culture, learn to communicate straight from their hearts and learn to enjoy the wilderness. One would not find luxurious stays across the state but can expect to put up at home-stays run by locals having basic amenities where safety and hygiene is ensured. In several places, camp sites are also available where travellers could spend a night, enjoying barbecue and bonfire under starry skies.

It may be noted that Arunachal Pradesh shares its borders with China which is the primary reason why entry to the state is not kept unmonitored for travellers. There are two different processes for Indian and Foreign Nationals to obtain the entry permits, which are explained below.

  • Indian citizens are required to obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Your itinerary should be finalised before you apply for the permit as the permit will be issued based on districts you mention. Please note that your itinerary must follow any of the 12 tourist circuits created by the Arunachal Pradesh Tourism Board.
  • An eILP can be acquired from this portal or it can also be obtained from Guwahati Airport.
  • You would need scanned copies of your Identity proofs and passport sized photographs to apply for the ILP.
  • The Inner Line Permit is of two kinds, one for single applicant and the other is for groups where the details of primary applicant are to be entered.
  • An ILP is issued for a maximum period of 30 days.
  • The fee is charged per person per district you are visiting. You can expect to pay a few hundred for the permit.
  • You have to enter the name and contact number of a local reference. You may speak to your homestay owners beforehand and use their reference. All of them are aware of the drill and are helpful.
  • Foreign Nationals are required to obtain a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Even with a valid PAP, foreigners are not allowed to visit certain areas in the state. Thus, a proper research is essential.
  • Please note that your itinerary must follow any of the 12 tourist circuits created by the Arunachal Pradesh Tourism Board.
  • The PAP is to be acquired manually from the Deputy Resident Commissioner Office of Arunachal Pradesh located in Guwahati. You’d have to pay a fee of $50 in the office.
  • It is important to note that a PAP is only issued to groups, if you wish to travel throughout the state. For solo travelers, the permit is only issued to travel to Ziro Valley, Tawang and Bomdila. You may look for other group of travelers to obtain the full permit.
  • The office functions between 10am to 5pm and applications for obtaining a PAP are accepted only till 2pm.
  • A local reference and their contact number is a must. You may speak to your homestay owners beforehand and use their reference.
  • An alternative option is to apply through a travel agency to save your time and energy and in case you are unable to find a group as a solo traveler. However, expect to pay a few extra thousand rupees if you go by this process.

The best months to visit Arunachal Pradesh, and follow this 7 Day Arunachal Pradesh Itinerary,  are April-May and October-November. The weather is pleasant during these months making your travel quite comfortable.

High altitude regions like Tawang, Sela Pass etc. would be covered in snow during the winter months. So if you are comfortable to travel through spine chilling cold and fancy to see a white Arunachal, winter is your month. But make sure you check the weather forecast beforehand to avoid roadblocks or any other mishaps.

In order to make the most of your Arunachal Pradesh Sightseeing Trip, you should avoid the monsoon months that last between June to September.

A detailed 7 day itinerary to travel to Arunachal Pradesh

Day 1 – guwahati to bomdila.

The first day of your travel shall necessarily contain two segments. First, to reach Guwahati and second, to travel to Bomdila from Guwahati. It is advisable to arrive in Guwahati by early noon so that you have enough time to get to the bus depot and find yourself a bus.

  • Fly to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati.
  • Take a train to Guwahati.
  • From Guwahati Airport or Railway Station, head to ISBT bus depot from where you can find overnight buses to Bomdila.
  • You would reach Bomdila the next morning.

Day 2 – Explore Bomdila

As you reach Bomdila on the second day, check in to your hotel/homestay and freshen up to start the day and explore the town.

arunachal state tourism

  • Holiday Hills
  • Doe-Gu-Khil Guest House
  • Hotel Tashi Den

Surrounded by various snow capped peaks, Bombila is a scenic destination situated in the Eastern Himalayas. A home to various indigenous tribes, Bomdila is a place where you can explore the monasteries, go hiking and walk through the apple orchards and valleys covered with flowers.

  • Visit the Bomdila Monastery built in 1965, divided into Upper Gompa, Middle Gompa and Lower Gompa out of which the Upper Gompa is the biggest one located on a steep hill.
  • Hike up to RR Hill , the highest point in Bomdila to enjoy the spectacular and panoramic views of Bhutan and Tibet.
  • If you still have some time to explore, you may take a vehicle to head to Eagle’s Nest Sanctuary , 20 kms outside the town. If you are interested in bird watching, you should definitely not miss this place.
  • Head to the apple orchards to take a stroll and also buy some apples for yourself.

Day 3 – Bomdila to Tawang (Explore Sela Pass and Sela Lake enroute)

This leg of the journey might not work too well if you are travelling solo. You can only stop at Sela Lake and Sela Pass if you have reserved a vehicle all for yourself, not a feasible option for a solo traveller. The cost splits in a group.

arunachal state tourism

There are shared sumos that cost around INR 500 till Tawang. The journey might take somewhere around 8 hours. Solo travellers can also  manage to tag along with other groups to share the costs of a reserved vehicle.

After arriving in Tawang, spend the evening walking through the mystic streets and gazing at the snowy peaks of Eastern Himalayas and sleep early to compensate for the tiring journey.

  • Dondrub Homestay
  • Hotel The Oak

The arrangement of vehicle to travel to Bum-la Pass and the various lakes must be done on this day itself so that permits can be easily obtained.

Tawang is one of those places to which photographs and words do no justice explaining the beauty. It is a remote settlement at an altitude of 305 meters, set against mighty Himalayas, dotted with glacial lakes, it is rightly known as the hidden paradise. Though situated in the extreme corner of the country, it is well developed in general. There are plenty of options to stay, many restaurants to eat at.

You can divide the two days in Tawang into nearby locations to visit, which can be covered on foot and the ones situated a bit far off, like Bum-la Pass, for which you’d require a vehicle.

arunachal state tourism

  • Start the day by visiting the Tawang Monastery , the biggest monastery in India and second largest in the world. A three storied monastery situated at a height of 3000 meters is no less than a scenic wonder. Explore the library the old scriptures to learn about Buddhism.
  • Head to Urgelling Gompa , a rather small but historically significant monastery which is the birthplace of the 6 th Dalai Lama.
  • Visit the Tawang War Memorial , which commemorates the martyrdom of 2140 Indian soldiers of Indo-China War. You can also check the souvenir shop beside the War Memorial.
  • In the evening, head to the cosy cafe, Dharma Coffee House and browse through their books.
  • Relish on a sumptuous dinner at Dragon  or Orange Restaurant Lounge Bar.

arunachal state tourism

If you wish to book a vehicle to take you to all of these places, you may opt for the same. A Tata Sumo can charge you between INR 2000-3000 for the whole day, depending on whether it is the peak season or not.

On this day, you are all set to travel to the wilderness and travel towards Bum La Pass , the Indo-China border. A Tata Sumo generally takes INR 5000 for the entire day to take you to these places. It works fine when you are travelling in a group but not for solo travelers. People traveling solo may tag along with another group at the taxi stand. Talk to the drivers or your hotel management beforehand so that they may be able to suggest you about other groups who are moving ahead on the same direction. There are bike rentals as well which is the best bet for all adrenaline junkies. However remember that the terrain is extremely rough so set out in a bike only if you are experienced enough.

arunachal state tourism

You need a permission from the Office of the Deputy Commissioner in Tawang District to go to Bum La Pass. Situated at an altitude of 4633 meters, it is a place where Indian Soldiers guard the country. The Pass is historically and culturally significant as well for it is known that Dalai Lama had entered India through this Pass.

Visit the famous Sangetsar Lake , more famously known as Madhuri Lake, named after the actress Madhuri Dixit as she had shot a few scenes of a movie in this spot. Also, stop by the beautiful Panga Teng Tso Lake . These lakes remain frozen during winters.

arunachal state tourism

Day 6 – Tawang – Bomdila – Tezpur

It is your last day in Tawang and you have to travel a long distance on Day 6 of this 7 Day Arunachal Pradesh Itinerary. Start early from Tawang so that you reach Bomdila by noon. To be on the safe side, book a seat in the shared vehicle a day earlier so that you don’t get pushed to the last seats which is very uncomfortable. The fare for a seat in Tata Sumo is INR 500 to reach Bomdila. You can stop in Bomdila for a while and have your lunch there. There are buses that start in the evening for Guwahati.

In case you do not manage to get a direct bus from Bomdila, you may break the travel at Tezpur. In that case the travel looks like this : Bomdila to Tezpur (Tata Sumo) and Tezpur to Guwahati (Bus). If you are opting for this alternative, you may spend the night in Tezpur and travel from Tezpur to Guwahati the next morning.

  • The Bhowmick’s Bunglow
  • Hotel Palazzo Prime

To be on the safe side, book a flight that is scheduled post 3pm from Guwahati. If you are taking a train, that too, should be scheduled in the second half of the day. This is to ensure that any unavoidable delay on the way from Bomdila/Tezpur to Guwahati does not affect your final leg of the journey.

Day 1 : Guwahati to Bomdila

Day 2 : Explore Bomdila

Day 3 : Bomdila to Tawang (explore Sela Lake & Sela Pass)

Day 4 : Explore Tawang

Day 5 : Bum-La pass | Sangetsar Lake | Panga Teng Tso Lake

Travel Guide To Arunachal Pradesh, India’s Orchid State

BannerImg

Located in the Northeastern-most tip of India, Arunachal Pradesh is India’s “land of the rising sun”. It is also fondly called “Land of dawn-lit mountains” or “The Orchid State” for the abundance of beautiful and rare orchid species found here. It is a land which offers myriad travel options. With its breathtaking landscape, there is a lot to be explored in this place. The state is rich in culture and tradition and topped with nature’s beauty. You can’t miss out on the beautiful flora and fauna of the place and the amazing views.

The capital of Arunachal Pradesh is Itanagar and the language spoken is Hindi. The period between October to April is the ideal time to visit Arunachal Pradesh. Arunachal offers a plethora of things to do – from taking in its natural beauty to trekking, camping, rafting and tribal tours. It has wildlife, history, root bridges and a lot more to offer to its visitors. The following is a detailed guide to help you on your travels to this wonderful state.

Things to prepare before going to Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh is one of the states where even Indian residents require a permit. Indians need to get the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and people of other nationalities require the Protected Area Permit (PAP) . This is because the state shares itself with foreign borders and there is a strong military presence, and certain areas are deemed as protected space. Hence, necessary permits are required to visit certain parts of the state and to ensure that visitors leave after a specified period of time.

You can obtain an ILP online through www.arunachalilp.com . Arunachal Pradesh tourism offices in all the major cities in India also provide permit applications. Another place to get it is at Guwahati Airport or AP state’s Naharlagun Railway Station.

Carry a valid Photo ID and some passport sized photographs of yourself for the application. Also, carry copies of all these documents within the state.

How to get to Arunachal Pradesh

A town en route from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh currently has few civil and military airports. However, these are not very well connected to major cities in India yet. One can use air connections via Kolkata, Guwahati, and Lilabari. Tezpur airport in Assam is the closest to Arunachal. You can also take a helicopter ride from Guwahati to Tawang.

Taxis and buses are easily available while travelling to Arunachal and are the preferred mode of interstate travel. It is best connected by road from Assam.

If you are taking the train, then the nearest station is Harmuti Station in Assam. It is an hour’s drive (34-40 km) to and from Itanagar from this station. Harmuti train station connects Arunachal to the rest of the prime cities of India.

Within Arunachal Pradesh, it is best to commute in a car/hired cab.

Where to Stay

Arunachal Pradesh offers different types of accommodation, from budget hotels to homestays. You can choose one based on your travel route or itinerary as the state has 7 major travel routes or regions. You can check the list of accommodations available based on respective regions  here.

Things to do in Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh shares its borders with the countries Bhutan, China and Myanmar, and the Indian States of Assam and Nagaland. The state is known for its lush forests, rare orchids, glistening streams and snow-capped mountains. The state has something to offer for every traveller. From ancient monasteries to waterfalls, there is a lot to see. It is also the place to be for people who are into adventure sports.

Things to See

Pankang teng tso lake.

Also known as Ptso lake, this gorgeous expanse of water situated amidst mountain ranges is around 17km away from Tawang. In winters, the lake is frozen and the nearby mountains are used for skiing and other winter sports. In the summer, the beautiful rhododendrons and colourful chirruping birds will be a treat for the eyes. There are several other natural lakes in the state.

War Memorials

Owing to its close proximity to China, Arunachal Pradesh played a huge role in the India-China (Indo-Sino) war of 1962. The Tawang War Memorial and Jaswantgarh War Memorial were built to pay tribute to the soldiers who gave their lives in service to the country. These memorials are worth a visit to reflect upon the sacrifices made by others to keep the rest of us safe.

Tawang Monastery

No travel guide to Arunachal Pradesh is complete without mentioning the famed and gorgeous Tawang Monastery. The Monastery is inhabited by Buddhist monks who belong to the Mahayana school of Buddhism. Built in the 17th century, it has its roots in history and houses printed and handwritten books, manuscripts, valuable antiquities and other artefacts of Buddhism. True to the Buddhist principle of peace, this monastery has an aura of serenity that will leave you feeling tranquil.

Tawang Monastery, Arunachal Pradesh

Often considered akin to heaven on earth, this motorable road, devoid of vegetation and covered in snow, connects Tawang to Tezpur and Guwahati in Assam. At an elevation of 13,700 ft, it is roughly 78km from Tawang and about 340km away from Guwahati. While there you can also view the gorgeous Sela Lake . If you are lucky, you might spot some yaks grazing away by the side of the lake. In winters, it can get as cold as -10 o C here.

Wildlife and Nature

Arunachal Pradesh is a nature lover’s paradise. The state is home to around 8 wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. It also boasts of having four big cats – tigers, leopards, snow leopards and clouded leopards . The golden cat and the marbled cat are two endangered feline species that can also be found here.

You can also find several exotic species of birds – Temminck’s Tragopan, Bengal Florican, Sclater’s Monal, Mishmi Wren to name a few. Other animal species to watch out for are the Himalayan black bear, red panda and the Takin , one of the many primate species in the state.

Namdapha, Pakhui, Mouling, Kane, Mehao, Dr D Ering, and Eaglenest are some of the Wildlife Sanctuaries in the State. You can also visit the Dihang-Debang Biosphere Reserve .

Adventures Activities

Arunachal Pradesh is up and coming as a destination for adventure tourism. With its lush forests, mountain ranges, and gushing rivers, it is the perfect place to seek some adventure.

The best area for trekkers is the Bomdila-Tawang area. For a more challenging or interesting route, one can go to the Tawang Chu Area. There are several other trekking areas dotted all around the state. May and October are the recommended months to go Trekking.

Fishing and Angling

There are five rivers in the state that are used for fishing and angling. The famous Golden Mahseer fish is supposed to set the perfect challenge for anglers as it puts up quite the fight. So catching one is like a feather in your cap for your angling skills.

Please note: Since the Mahseer is an endangered species, anglers are requested to release them back in the water after they are caught. The sport is meant to test skills and not to kill the fish or take it home.

White Water Rafting

The Siang river is the most popular one for this sport. Other whitewater rafting routes are Dibang, Subansiri and Kameng.

You can also go boating at Salley Lake .

Festivals and Culture

The festivals and rich culture of Arunachal are worth experiencing. Festivals in Arunachal are linked to agriculture, nature, music and new year celebrations. It is celebrated on a grand scale, usually for 3-4 days, and the festivals are usually characterised by prayers.

Some of the most popular festivals of Arunachal Pradesh are:

Losar festival.

Also called Lhochhar, it is a Tibetan Buddhist festival, primarily a celebration of Tibetan New Year. The dates vary based on the lunar calendar, and sometimes the location and tradition also play a role in determining the exact dates. Losar celebration for 2018 was concluded in February. The dates for 2019 are set to be 5-7 February.

Tamladu Festival

Usually held on the 15 th of February in the Lohit District of the state , Tamladu is the prime festival of the Digaru Mishmis Tribe. They offer prayers to the Gods of Water and Earth to protect them from natural calamities and to yield a good harvest. This is one of the oldest festivals of the state and is celebrated with traditional customs and tribal dances.

Ziro Festival of Music

A four-day event, this is purported as ‘India’s greatest outdoor music festival’. This year, the festival will be held on 27-3Septemberer. For more information, visit their official website .

Sangken Festival

This is another New Year celebration undertaken in Arunachal Pradesh and parts of Assam as well. It is celebrated by the Theravada Buddhist Communities and usually takes place from 13-15 April.

The festival is in some ways similar to the popular Songkran festival in Thailand, as people celebrate by splashing each other with water as a mark of purity and peace. It also consists of a procession where Lord Buddha’s images after being given a ceremonial bath (this holy bath is the most auspicious event in the festival) are marched down the streets to the accompaniment of drums. The 3-day festival ends with the images of Buddha being taken back to its place of origin.

Other things to keep in mind

  • Ensure you have your permits – carry copies of your ID (like the passport), your permit and some passport sized photographs wherever you go in the state.
  • Carry warm clothes even if you are visiting in the summer as some parts of the state like Sela Pass and other higher altitude regions can be cold.
  • Be respectful to the place and its inhabitants – especially the monks and soldiers.
  • Preserve the ecology and biodiversity of the place.

Backpack to Arunachal Pradesh and enjoy in the lap of nature. Indulge in the unique culture, gorgeous natural spots and experience various ethnicities. Happy Travelling!

The 6 best things to do in Arunachal Pradesh for outdoor adventurers

Sponsored by

Feb 15, 2022 • 6 min read

Dibang Valley, Arunachal Pradesh, India

Dibang Valley, Arunachal Pradesh, India

Arguably one of India’s most naturally beautiful states,  Arunachal Pradesh  can aptly be described as an outdoor lover’s paradise. With a name that translates to “the land of the dawn-lit mountains,” it’s one of the last wild frontiers of  India  in the far northeast corner of the subcontinent. Very few know of the visually stunning and culturally rich area bordered by  Tibet ,  Bhutan , and  Myanmar . However, its underexplored nature has become the attraction for intrepid travelers looking for untouched wilderness in India.

Arunachal is dominated by the peaks of the Eastern Himalayas, with deep valleys carved out by glacier-fed rivers and lush forests located in the lowlands that shelter rare flora and fauna. There is an endless supply of activities and natural spaces to explore in Arunachal Pradesh for outdoor adventurers. From wildlife sanctuaries harboring red pandas and snow leopards to hiking trails through valleys home to traditional tribes, visitors can experience a sense of seclusion, peace, and raw adventure rarely found anywhere else.

india arunachal pradesh namdapha ranjan kr. das shutterstock_1325065313 RFC.jpg

Namdapha National Park

One of only 20 places where you can spot a Red Panda in India,  Namdapha National Park  has become a prime spot for wildlife photographers and conservationists. The huge park is the third-largest in the country and is in the far southeast corner of the state on the Myanmar border.

Along with the rare pandas, you can also spot four species of big cats, including tigers, leopards, clouded leopards, and elusive snow leopards. While it can be challenging to reach, the chance to explore the ancient biodiversity inside the park beckons the most determined of explorers.

The closest town is Miao, where park permits are issued. It offers visitors basic accommodations. You can hire a local guide to take day hikes into the park or join a longer multi-day safari trek to get up close and personal with some extraordinary mammals and birds.

Rafting and fishing

The mighty Brahmaputra River is known as the Siang River as it curves its way through Arunachal Pradesh. The cross-border river entices anglers, kayakers, and rafters to explore its flowing water and diverse wildlife through its journey in the Eastern Himalayas. The tradition of fishing in the area plays an important role in the culture of the local Adi people, one of the largest tribal groups in the state.

Sisen Bridge over Siang River.jpg

Most travelers base themselves in the oldest town in the state, Pasighat, located on the banks of the river. The town is often referred to as the gateway to Arunachal, the town has an airport, bus station, and accommodations, serving the trickle of visitors the area receives.

Guided rafting trips can be organized from Pasighat, or you can hop on a specialized angling tour to try your luck at catching a Golden Mahseer, the prime fish of the river. Hire a local guide to ensure you have the best experience and obtain proper community permission for angling and fishing.

The Siang River's largest tributary, the Subansiri River, is also prime for rafting and fishing, with fast rapids and a vibrant aquatic ecosystem. The stunning and remote waterway is best accessed from the town of Daporijo.

Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary

Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary is one of India’s best destinations for bird watchers. The protected park sits at the foothills of the Himalayas of West Kameng District in Arunachal Pradesh. With its dramatic scenery and a subtropical climate, Eaglenest is considered a paradise for biodiversity.

india arunachal pradesh eaglenest weranut shutterstock_625528109 RFC.jpg

It’s estimated that over 700 species of birds can be found in the region, which is one of the highest densities of bird species in the world. For dedicated bird watchers, it’s the only place to spot the elusive Bugun liocichla, which was named after the local Bugun community when the bird was first discovered amongst the forest in the mid-1990s. Otherwise, there are many other rare species to watch amongst the treetops, including Ward’s trogons, wedge-billed babblers, and Blyth’s tragopans.

The unique sanctuary makes up part of the greater Kameng Protected Area in western Arunachal Pradesh, which means you can also combine a visit with neighboring Sessa Orchid Sanctuary and Pakhui Tiger Reserve across the Kameng River.

The Seven Lakes Trek (Anini)

Towards the far eastern side of Arunachal Pradesh, you’ll find the spectacular Dibang Valley. The valley, blessed with incredible natural beauty, is characterized by its lush green slopes and low hanging clouds forming a mystical landscape. At the heart of the valley is the main village of Anini, home to the traditional Mishmi tribe, who migrated centuries ago from ancient Tibet.

shutterstock_1561308109.jpg

One of the only ways to really explore this beautiful area is on the Seven Lakes Trek. The trek might be one of India’s best-kept secrets for outdoor adventures, featuring jaw-dropping views and a challenging trail with many ascents and descents. Following centuries-old hunting routes, it connects seven different high-altitude lakes to the north of Anini village over six days. The incredibly wild landscape carved out by the mountain peaks is best tackled with knowledgeable local guides and porters and proper camping equipment.

Anini is an incredibly remote destination that beckons those with an adventurous spirit and plenty of patience to tackle the long winding road to get there. The village is generally reached by road via Roing, the main town of the Lower Dibang Valley.

Hiking the Bailey Trail

For a longer journey on foot, the Bailey Trail presents one of the best hiking adventures in Arunachal Pradesh. The trail traces the historic route carved out by British officers, Captain Morshed and Lieutenant Colonel Bailey, who surveyed the land in 1911-12.

Traveling from Dirang to Jung, the hiking route is located towards the western part of the state and passes through villages home to the Monpa tribe. The Monpa people, who have traditionally made their home throughout the Himalayan lowlands, are believed to be the only nomadic tribe in Northeast India.

On the trail, you’ll wander through dense forest while making your way up to mountain passes that offer spectacular views of the highest peaks in the region, including Gorichen and Kangto.

The week-long trek climbs to almost 16,000 feet in elevation, past Monpa settlements on the lower slopes and untouched lakes filled by glacial rivers. It offers hikers a slower-paced insight into the region’s diverse landscapes and cultures on rarely trodden trails that present a feeling of seclusion seldom felt anywhere else in India.

Dong Valley

As far east as you can possibly reach in Arunachal Pradesh, the Dong Valley is carved out by the Lohit River. This is the most accessible easternmost point on the Indian subcontinent, so the valley is considered to be the very first place that receives sunlight in India. It’s a real adventure to climb to the top of the valley to catch a glimpse of the first rays of sunlight as they hit the mountains.

india arunachal pradesh talo moyong shutterstock_1561412884 RFC .jpg

Dong Valley is home to three small villages, Dong, Walong, and Kibithu, with the nearest major town at Tezu, a 125-mile trek by road. You must hike for around two hours from Dong village to reach the most famous mountaintop spot to watch the sunrise. Most hikers begin their climb at around 3 a.m. to make it in time for the first light. The effort is rewarded with an unreal view of the sun hitting the forested slopes through the clouds, likely to be one of the most memorable mornings you’ll have in India.

While the stunning landscape draws most visitors, Dong Valley is also home to the Meyor tribe, one of the least known communities in Arunachal Pradesh. With just a small population concentrated in this remote corner of the state, it’s an incredibly intriguing destination to get to know the local people who have made this beautiful valley home for centuries.

However, during peak summer, days can get hotter and make it difficult to spend too much time outside at a stretch. Monsoon, that is from July to September, washes down the state and adds to the vibrance of nature’s viridescence. Since the weather is highly unpredictable in these months as clear skies can be crowded by voluminous clouds without warning, tourists often avoid opting Arunachal Pradesh tourism during the monsoon.

Inner Line Permit to visit Arunachal Pradesh

In order to explore Arunachal Pradesh tourism, Indians from other parts of the country need to obtain an inner line permit to enter the state. Foreigners, on the other hand, require a Protected Area Permit. The restriction is imposed in order to avoid the negative impacts of tourism in protected areas. It is quite easy for one to get the permit online. You require any one of your official identity cards such as your PAN card, driving license, voter’s ID card, passport or Aadhar card. In addition, you also need to upload a passport-size photo. If you plan to travel in a group, you may only submit one identity card for the permit, but you will have to upload every member’s passport-size photograph. You can get an approved permit for as many districts that you would like to explore on your trip of Arunachal Pradesh tourism. You will get a response around four to five hours after you submit your application. In case your application gets rejected, you will be informed about the reason which you can fix in your next attempt. If you do not want to get the permit online, you can head to a Deputy Commissioner’s office in Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Shillong, Tezpur, Dibrugarh, North Lakhimpur, Jorhat and all the Deputy Commissioner offices of Arunachal Pradesh. The cost of the permit is Rs 100, both online and offline. You could also reach out to a travel agent to obtain the permit for you, however, that would cost you more. It is recommended for you to get the permit online if you are planning your Arunachal Pradesh tourism itinerary.

Nestled between the hills, the architecture of the city is practically designed to withstand earthquakes. Therefore, you will notice that the buildings in the city are made with light, wooden-framed structures. Itanagar also has a Buddhist Temple which has been consecrated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It is the centre of the evident Tibetan influence in the area. From the temple, you get a sweeping view of the well-planned city and its rustic countryside. The capital has a history of holding eminence. Itanagar used to be known as Mayapur in the 11the century and used to be the capital under the reign of the Jiti Dynasty as well. The city’s namesake, the Ita Fort, has been standing tall since the 14th century, and is said to be constructed by King Ramachandra. It invites many travellers on their trip of Arunachal Pradesh tourism.

It also showcases a 18 feet high gilded statue of Buddha. Tawang is also known for being the birthplace of his Holiness the 6th Dalai Lama. The history of Tawang also contributes to its charm. The town used to formerly be a part of the kingdom of Tibet. It has been an area of conflict due to disagreements between the Government of India and the Government of China, but it is a peaceful area now, fit to be included in your Arunachal Pradesh tourism itinerary. Once you are done ambling about the small town, you can head to the outskirts to go trekking and hiking.

Activities And Things To Do In Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh tourism has had a low-profile, but it has begun to be recognised by travellers from around the world to be a treasure trove of sights and experiences. While the majority of Arunachal Pradesh tourism’s attraction lies in its natural beauty and places to see, they are accompanied by a variety of things to do that facilitate a more immersive journey of exploring Arunachal Pradesh tourism. The opportunities Arunachal Pradesh tourism offers to travellers to have a memorable trip are endless. This Arunachal Pradesh travel guide has put together a comprehensive list for you to pick from while planning your Arunachal Pradesh tourism itinerary.

Immerse in the unique culture

Arunachal Pradesh tourism has a special place in travellers’ memories owing to the immense diversity within the population of the state which does not affect the deep connections that they are able to form with people across tribes. Two-third of the state is inhabited by the indigenous groups, that include about 26 major tribes and over 100 sub tribes. The Nissi (Nishi or Dafla), Sherdukpen, Aka, Monpa, Apa Tani, and Hill Miri are among the main tribes in the western part of the state. The biggest tribal group in the state is the Adi, which inhabits the central region. The northeastern hills are populated by the Mishmi tribe. Other tribes such as the Wancho, Nocte, and Tangsa are settled in the southeastern districts. While these groups may share some characteristics, each of them are proudly distinct from one another. When exploring Arunachal Pradesh tourism, try to engage with the locals and participate in their traditions and lifestyle for a different experience of Arunachal Pradesh tourism. The diversity in population also contributes to the organisation of a host of festivities. Some festivals that are highlights of Arunachal Pradesh tourism are Pangsau Pass Winter Festival celebrated in January, Nyokum, Losar Festival and Siang River Festival celebrated in February, Dree Festival celebrated in July, Solung celebrated in September and Ziro Festival of Music that takes places in either September or October. Ensure to plan your Arunachal Pradesh tourism keeping the festivals in mind!

Attend the Ziro Festival of Music

One of the most sought-after outdoors music festivals in India is situated nowhere other than Arunachal Pradesh itself! Ziro Festival of Music is a showcase of independent artists of the country and a celebration of music. The festival pertains to several genres. Not only is this festival a thrilling getaway for music lovers, but it has also brought Arunachal Pradesh tourism into the limelight and supports many locals in the area. The four-day festival has been instrumental in shining light on new talent as well as established artists and bands such as Lee Ranaldo, Steve Shelley, Louw Majaw, Sha'air n Func, Indus Creed, Peter Cat Recording Co, Menwhopause, Guru Rewben Mashangva, and Barmer Boys. Visitors can camp at the accommodation facilities arranged by the organisers near the venue of the festival. The festival takes place in September or October in Ziro Valley, one of the most magnificent destinations under Arunachal Pradesh tourism. Attending this event is a must and will significantly enhance your experience of Arunachal Pradesh tourism.

Go for adventure sports

The state is rooted to nature and remains largely forested, which means that there are a number of outdoor adventure activities organised for Arunachal Pradesh tourism. Trekking is a popular activity here you could indulge to get your adrenaline rushing. The trails here are slightly challenging so absolute beginners should avoid doing it without guidance. Two of the most well-known trekking routes are Se La Pass and Margherita railhead. Other than that, you will find many smaller trails that you can go hiking on. The best time to go trekking is from October to February. Aside from trekking, water sports such as river rafting and angling are adventurous sports that you should partake in. You can go river rafting along the Kameng River in the Tawang district, the Subansiri River from Taliha to the north of Daporijo, the Siang River and the Dibang River, from Anini to the Assam border. You can go camping while exploring the destinations under Arunachal Pradesh tourism too. Some of the best places for camping are Chandu, Bomdila and Tawang. If you are attending the festival of Losar, you can also participate in archery as it is tradition to host a competition on the sport during the celebrations of this festival.

Visit India’s largest monastery

The Tawang Monastery is the largest in India and the second largest in the whole world. It is hence unsurprising that it is a significant pilgrimage site for Buddhists. Over 400 years old, this monastery used to be a part of Tibet but was later handed over to the British Raj. Sitting atop a mountain that enjoys a delightful view of the town, the monastery is a sturdy structure made to withstand external force. It is called Galden Namgey Lhatse, which translates to mean celestial paradise in a clear sky. Upon your visit here, you will realise how the name fits the monastery. It is home to a lot of ancient Tibetan texts and artwork and it also holds the knowledge of Tantric Buddhism. The interiors are vibrant yet simple. An important spiritual structure, when in Tawang, do not miss adding this to your Arunachal Pradesh tourism checklist.

Where To Stay In Arunachal Pradesh

While you can find a number of accommodation spaces offered by Arunachal Pradesh tourism, you will not be able to find luxury options here. Far-flung in the northeastern corner of the country, the state still remains vastly unexplored. As mentioned earlier in this Arunachal Pradesh travel guide, even the tourists’ entry is closely monitored and there is an emphasis on staying rooted to nature and tradition. Therefore, the hotels and the guesthouses offered by Arunachal Pradesh tourism are not over the top. You will also find lodges provided by Arunachal Pradesh tourism that are quite affordable. Many of them do keep in mind to provide the essential amenities for the comfort of the visitors. There are no well-known travel hostels in the area yet as well. In fact, the state’s most famous ingenous alcohol beverage, apong , is a rice beer, made of fermented rice. Another popular snack is boiled cakes of rice wrapped in leaves. Among vegetables, lettuce is the preferred choice, which is cooked by boiling ginger, coriander, chillies and salt. Many wild herbs and bamboo shoots are extensively used in the preparation of the meals. The local food here is generally boiled or smoked, and fried dishes are not preferred. The bans on hunting have now eliminated the use of wild birds and animals that were once devoured by locals. However. there is no dearth of thrilling food options that you will come across while exploring Arunachal Pradesh tourism. For example, you can have a taste of silkworms and rats cooked by the natives of Ziro. If such food is not for you, you do not need to worry as there are plenty of other dishes for you to savour on your trip. Some of the most popular dishes that this Arunachal Pradesh travel guide recommends are pika pila , a pickle made by the ApaTani tribe with bamboo shoots, pork fat and chillies, lukter , dry meat with chilli flakes, pehak , a spicy chutney made of fermented soya bean and chura sabji , a gravy made of fermented cheese. How To Travel In Arunachal Pradesh

Travelling within the state can be a bit difficult for those used to travelling comfortably. Since the area is hilly, most road trips will be bumpy. For commuting, you can either take the buses run by Arunachal Pradesh State Transport Department or book yourself a seat on a shared sumo jeep. The vehicles are often cramped, so be mentally prepared for some amount of discomfort before undertaking a journey in Arunachal Pradesh. Taking the bus would be cheaper, but travellers prefer taking the sumo to travel within the state. Sumos are slightly more expensive, but the overall money spent on travelling within the state would not amount to a lot.

Typical Costs In Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh tourism, still off the radar of commercialisation, retains its simplicity. Travelling here, therefore, is not a luxurious affair. As mentioned earlier in the Arunachal Pradesh travel guide, getting a permit costs only Rs 100 to Indians. Since the state is situated in a far-flung corner of the country, the most expensive endeavour would only be reaching it. Within the state, if you are taking a sumo jeep to travel, you will have to shell out a couple hundred rupees for every ride. A backpacking trip with a low budget can be managed at about Rs 1,000 per day. This entails about Rs 200 to Rs 400 spent on food and drinks per day, Rs 700 to Rs 1,200 spent on accommodation per day and Rs 500 to Rs 750 on car rides to go from one destination to another. The upper limit of expenses depend on your prerogative, but since most things and activities to do here are cheap, you will be able to manage to have a low to mid-budget trip. You could also book an Arunachal Pradesh tour package. A week-long Arunachal Pradesh tour plan with all the essential inclusions and an experienced guide could cost you around Rs 20,000 to explore Arunachal Pradesh tourism.

How many days do I need to explore Arunachal Pradesh?

Most Arunachal Pradesh travel guides recommend travellers to take at least a week to explore the state and get a taste of what it has to offer. The state is vast and the experiences it offers innumerable, hence there is no limit to how many days you can spend here as there is a lot to uncover in the state.

What are the things I should pack for a trip to Arunachal Pradesh?

If you are travelling in winter, you should carry woolen clothes to keep you warm. Even if you are travelling in any other season, make sure to carry some warm clothes as some areas may be colder than others and nights tend to be cooler in the state as well. Make sure to carry your identity proofs and Inner Line Permit as it is necessary for entry into Arunachal Pradesh.

Suggest three tips for planning a trip to Arunachal Pradesh.

  • It is recommended to obtain the Inner Line Permit for Arunachal Pradesh online. Although as mentioned earlier in the Arunachal Pradesh travel guide, you can get it offline as well, but it would be easier for you to submit your application online.
  • Prepare yourself mentally for a bumpy ride and keep your things safely in your bag as the transportation within the state can be crowded. The trips can be long so carry the basic medicines as well.
  • Include as many festivals that you can in your Arunachal Pradesh tourism itinerary.

Which are the lesser-known places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh?

Some of the offbeat places under Arunachal Pradesh tourism are Dirang, Tenga Valley, Dong, Anini and Dambuk.

How do I reach Arunachal Pradesh?

The nearest airport to Arunachal Pradesh is the one in Tezpur, Assam which is well connected with Kolkata and Guwahati. Otherwise, you can take a flight to Kolkata and Guwahati from any city in India and head to Arunachal Pradesh by road. The Harmuti train station in Assam is an hour away from Itanagar, which is the closest railway station to enter the state. The most preferred way to travel here is by road.

Along with this goes the notorious bamboo shoot which is omnipresent in almost every dish of their local cuisine. From vegetables to pickles to curries, every delicacy has a hint of bamboo shoot which makes it mandatory for you to taste it. The Apatani people make a famous kind of pickle known as Pika pila that is a result of bamboo shoot and pork fat.

Apong, which is nothing but rice beer, is a must try when you go visiting the hills. Another locally made alcohol is the Marua which is made out of millet. Sounds quite healthy, isn’t it? Then comes the usual momos, thupkas and various dishes made out of meat.

Arunachal Tourist Circuits Map

If you have any idea about Arunachal Pradesh, you are probably aware of these 12 Arunachal Tourist Circuits. Even if you are not, just know that Arunachal Tourism has officially defined these circuits depending on geographic locations across this state. Apart from being vast and diverse, Arunachal is also remote and most of the areas have limited infrastructure. It is practically impossible to cover the whole state in one go and that is why it has been divided into circuits so that you can plan one at a time.  I intend to gradually explore and document every circuit in detail. But as of now, let us have a quick look at them.

The thing with these circuits is that the communication is not as simple. There is no direct connectivity between many of these circuits although they look close in the map. For instance, if you have to go to Ziro from tawang, you have to first come back to the plains of Assam, drive along the highway for a while, and then enter Arunachal again. This is why these circuits help you plan, although personally I would have slightly chnaged the way they were arranged. I generally target 1-2 circuits in one trip.

12 Tourist Circuits of Arunachal (+1)

1. tezpur-bhalukpong-bomdila-tawang (shergaon-rupa).

This circuit needs no introduction. This is probably the most famous region in Arunachal Pradesh. Bomdila-Dirang-Tawang route has been popular for a while with the friendly Monpa population, Buddhist Monasteries, high passes, and lakes. But there are other things in the peripheries, such as the Shergaon-Rupa circuit, that deserve more coverage. Also, this region is a paradise for hardcore bird watchers with the likes of Eagle’s Nest and Manda La. Apart from Monpas, there are other eclectic communities here like Sherdukpen and Bugun.

I have already made a detailed post about the Tawang Circuit .

2. Tezpur-Seijosa(Pakhui)-Bhalukpong-Tipi-Tezpur

This is adjacent to the circuit above but it is more it is a more untouched area dominated by Pankhui (Pakke) tiger reserve. Some tourist facilities have come up near Seijosa, at the edge of the forest, and it is also good for birding, especially Hornbills. It is generally inhabited by Nyishi people.

3. Itanagar-Ziro-Daporijo-Aalo-Pasighat

I guess this circuit was thought of during the early days of planning because it covers a vast area and covers elements from multiple circuits. Itanagar has a few things but it is more of a big city. The main attraction here is Ziro, the valley of the Apatanis. The music festival has made it famous but that is more of a distraction rather than the real thing. From Ziro you can also for treks such as the Talley Valley Trek. Daporiji, Aalo, Pasighat, etc are growing towns but you will find interesting villages if you venture out. Another new attraction not specifically mentioned in this context but is in the same area is Basar, dominated by Galo people. Another place I can think of is Malini Than, which is a temple and an archaeological site on the border and is related to the ancient kingdoms of Assam.

4. Doimukh-Sagalee-Pakke Kesang-Seppa

Yet again, this circuit is barely touched and there is limited information available. These are mostly n the East Kameng District (As opposed to West Kameng, which covers Curcuit 1). This region also touches the Pankhui Sanctuary mentioned in Circuit 2, but on the northern side. The main ethnic groups here are the Akas, Bangnis(Nyishi), Mijis and Puroiks (Sulung).

5. Ziro-Palin-Nyapin-Sangram-Koloriang

Now, Ziro here is a famous tourist destination as discussed in circuit 3. But the region beyond that is completely untouched and frankly, I have never met anyone who has even been to Koloriang. This does make it an interesting proposition. Maybe I will make it someday. Beyond the Apatanis of Ziro, you will come accross Nyishi, Bangru, and Puroik people.

6. Daporijo-Taliha-Siyum-Nacho

These are located in the Upper Subansiri district dominated by Tagin and Galo people. Apart from Daporijio, the remaining places here are again not explored much.

7. Aalo-Mechuka

This is a more popular circuit. Aalo (Along) is dominated by Galo people and was one of the better-known towns in the state. Mechuka beyond is located on the banks of Siyom River near the Tibetan frontier. It was remote but in the last decade it has been developed as an adventure sports destination and is very popular nowadays. Mechuka is dominated by Buddhist Memba people.

I have an old post on Mechuka .

8. Pasighat-Jengging-Yingkiong-Tuting-Galling

This is the epic route along the Siang river. Lower areas are dominated by Adi people while you will find others such as Idu Mishmi, Khamba and Memba as you go along. The population in the upper areas near the border are Buddhist and it touches the iconic Beyul of Pemako region which has mythical signifance for Tibetan Buddhists. Some extreme 3 week treks can also be done here. In spite of all these, this region remains barely explored and few have made it to this frontier.

9. Dibrugarh-Roing-Mayudia-Hunli-Anini

This is another circuit which is not well-explored but has begun to grow already. This is the Dibang Valley dominated by Adi and Idu Mishmi people. Roing is more of a plain area on the border of Assam. Mayudia beyond Roing. It is a moderately high pass where it snows in the winter and attracts visitors from the plains of Assam. But the real attraction starts after Mayudia, as you reach Anini. There are scores of trek routes and high altitude lakes beyond Anini that are only beginning to attracct eyeballs. Dambuk (that place with the Orange Festival), is also a short dversion from here. This circuit can only grow in the near future.

I once went there but only made it to Mayudia. Nevertheless I made a Roing Anini Guide .

10. Tinsukia-Tezu-Wakro-Hayuliang-Kibithu-Kaho-Dong

This is the easternmost part of Arunachal, and also of India. That means this part receives the first rays of sun and this is why people now go there on New Year’s eve. This stretch follows the Lohit River.  These areas are inhabited by Adi, Meyor, Khampti, Singpho and Miju Mishmi people. The remotest corners border China and has significant army presence.

11. Margherita-Miao-Namdapha-Bijoynagar

This circuit in Changland district is mainly dominated by the Namdapha National Park, which is a dense rainforest. You can hike through the jungle for several days and if you have time, you cna reach Bijoynagar, which is practically among the remotest villages in India as you need to hike through the jungle for more than a week to reach it! This area is inhabited by Lisu and Singhpho people, as well as some Chakma settlers.

Namdapha is well-known among wildlife lovers yet has not been explored well due to sheer remoteness and challenging terrain. I have been to Namdapha but it was not a very successful trip. You can club it with some other wildlife attractions in the bordering areas of Assam such as the Dehing Patkai and the Dibru Sailhowa National Parks.

12. Jairampur – Manmao- Nampong – Pangsau Pass

This is another interesting area that is beginning to grow, especially after the introduction of the Pangsau Pass Winter Festival. This pass was actually an ancient route connecting NE to Myanmar in the ancient times. During WW II, the iconic Stillwell Road (Ledo to Kunming Road) was built around this region. This area, especially the border town of Nampong, is inhabited by Tangsas and is becoming an internationa trading hub. Some WWII sites such as war graves etc can also be foudn scattered in this region.

13. Tirap & Longding

I am including this additional circuit which was not officially mentioned. These include the Tirap and Longding districts bordering Mon district of Nagaland on one side and the previous Circuit No. 12 on the other. This area is ihabited by th elike of Nocte, Wancho, Tangsa, & Tutsa people. This region has not been explored well but historically as well as in terms of natural and ethnographic delights, there is much more to be seen.
