Geography, environment, & weather

Italy’s distinct boot shape is iconic, with the country extending a playful kick towards the Mediterranean, notably jutting out to include Sicily. Bordered by Switzerland, France, Austria, and Slovenia, Italy boasts a rugged terrain, with the majestic Alps forming its imposing northern perimeter. Comprising twenty unique regions and hosting a population of approximately 61 million, Italy is a land rich in geographical and cultural diversity.

The allure of Italy goes beyond its well-known cities and towns steeped in ancient Roman history. Regions like Tuscany, Umbria, and Southern Italy beckon with their picturesque landscapes adorned with sprawling olive groves, offering a serene escape for mature travelers seeking to immerse themselves in the beauty of the countryside.

When it comes to climate, Italy’s weather exhibits remarkable variability across its regions. Cities like Rome, Florence, Umbria, and Assisi typically experience mild conditions, ideal for leisurely exploration. On the other hand, Southern Italy, encompassing the enchanting Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Sicily, and Naples, enjoys mild winters and scorching summers. In contrast, Northern Italy, home to Venice, Verona, Milan, and the tranquil Lake Maggiore, witnesses colder temperatures during winter, both in the daytime and at night. Certain locales can become parched and sweltering in the summer months. Moreover, for those venturing to the mountains pre, post, or during winter, packing warm attire suitable for snowy conditions is essential for a comfortable experience.

World Heritage sites

Italy boasts an impressive array of 48 UNESCO World Heritage Sites . Each site holds immense historical and cultural value, showcasing Italy’s rich heritage. Among these treasures are the historic centers of iconic towns such as Florence, Rome, Naples, Urbino, and Siena, each offering a glimpse into Italy’s storied past.

One standout site is the Church and Dominican Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, famed for housing Da Vinci’s masterpiece, “The Last Supper”. This cultural gem not only holds artistic significance but also serves as a testament to Italy’s artistic legacy.

Another must-see is the Piazza del Duomo in Pisa, home to the renowned leaning tower and three other cultural monuments. This vibrant square encapsulates Italy’s architectural prowess and rich history in a unique and captivating manner.

For nature enthusiasts and admirers of sublime landscapes, the Medici Villas and Gardens in Tuscany offer a serene escape into the lush beauty of the region. These villas stand as a testament to the harmonious relationship between architecture and nature, embodying the essence of Italian Renaissance elegance.

Exploring these UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Italy is a journey through time and culture, where each site unravels a unique aspect of Italy’s illustrious past and vibrant present.

Festivals & events

Italy, being a cultural hub of artistic and industrial excellence, offers a plethora of events year-round that cater to various interests. Here are some standout events to mark on your calendar for an unforgettable Italian experience:

Eating & Drinking

The tour director and tour guide on your guided tour in Italy are valuable resources for assisting with ordering meals or a coffee . In Italy, the culinary traditions are distinct, with Italians typically indulging in a modest breakfast, a single-dish lunch, and a single-dish dinner. A typical Italian breakfast consists of a pastry paired with a cappuccino; opting for a cappuccino later in the day instead of an espresso is considered unconventional. It’s customary in smaller towns for shops to close for approximately an hour during lunchtime, underscoring the significance of this meal in Italian culture. Dinner is generally enjoyed after 8pm.

When patronizing Italian bars in city centres, customers may notice a price variance if seated outside versus standing at the bar or opting for takeaway. Outdoor seating typically incurs higher charges due to substantial taxes on establishments with outdoor seating. When ordering drinks or coffee, it is common to pay at the cash register and then present the receipt to the bar staff or barista for service. Tipping a euro or two is generally well received in such establishments.

To streamline service and avoid kitchen delays, it is advisable for large groups ordering pasta dishes to select the same type of pasta, such as spaghetti or penne. This is particularly important as fresh pasta is often prepared promptly, and a variety of pasta orders can hinder efficiency and cause frustration in the kitchen. This simple tip can enhance the dining experience for everyone involved.

Health & safety

While Italy is generally a safe destination for travelers, it is essential to remain vigilant, especially in tourist hotspots where pickpocketing can occur. Smarttraveller.gov offers up-to-date guidance on traveling to Italy, emphasizing the importance of closely monitoring your belongings to prevent theft.

Electrical supply

When traveling abroad, it is essential to be prepared with the necessary items for a smooth journey. In Italy specifically, electrical outlets feature two round pins, requiring visitors to have the correct adaptor to charge their devices effectively. Prior to embarking on your trip, ensure you acquire the appropriate adaptor to avoid any inconvenience during your travels.

Tour Reviews

Apart from just touching base and saying hi, I wanted to thank you for such a wonderful trip. Fourth time in Italy for me but the chance to get a little off the beaten track was really special... not to mention I got so much more insight into Italy than I had before. (KG Heritage Italy)

Heritage, culture, history of Italy, seniors small group – Short Tour

One of my most pleasurable holidays, and one I must repeat, as it was not long enough. We were most fortunate in having our marvellous tour leader.

It was a marvellous tour. I was privileged, as we all were, to see so many things of beauty, and so much history, in your very capable hands. Thank you for passing on some of your knowledge, and for your ready assistance. Thank you also for the photos and the list of guides; I'd been trying to remember the name of that rather good, but unusual fellow we met in Siena. No doubt because of his enthusiasm - and eccentricity - I remember Siena so well. (BH - Heritage Italy)

• Thank you so much for being a wonderful leader for the Heritage Italy tour. It was so interesting and has left me with lots of things to think about and follow up in my reading. I found I had an old book giving the history of Greek science, i.e. the thinking of the Greeks in the early BC time. An interesting addition to our visit to Paestum and Cumae. The whole experience was marvellous and I have to thank you again for your kindness and consideration and the generous amount of time you gave to us all. I really appreciated that. Check the qualifications and experience of tour leaders or guides. Experienced and knowledgeable guides can greatly enhance your travel experience.

Special Interests and Themes

Some companies offer tours based on specific interests (e.g., culinary, adventure, history). Choose a company that aligns with your interests.

By considering these factors and conducting thorough research, you’ll be better equipped to choose a travel tour company that suits your preferences and ensures a memorable travel experience.

The Benefits of a Small Group Tour

Small group tours offer several benefits that can greatly enhance your travel experience.

Personalized Attention

With fewer travelers in the group, you’ll receive more personalized attention from the tour guide. This allows for better interaction, the ability to ask questions, and a more tailored experience.

Flexibility

Small group tours are often more flexible, allowing for spontaneous detours, additional stops, and adjustments to the itinerary based on the group’s interests and preferences.

Less Waiting Time

Smaller groups are easier to manage, reducing waiting times at attractions, restaurants, and transportation, allowing you to make the most of your time.

Camaraderie

Traveling with a small group fosters a sense of camaraderie and facilitates the opportunity to make lasting connections with like-minded travelers.

Access to Unique Locations

Small groups can access places that larger tours may not be able to reach, providing opportunities to explore hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path locations.

Enhanced Cultural Experiences

Interacting with locals and immersing in the local culture is often more feasible in a small group setting, allowing for more authentic experiences.

Better Accommodation Options

Smaller groups can often stay in boutique hotels or unique accommodations that may not be suitable for larger tour groups.

Focus on Quality

Tour operators leading small group tours often focus on quality over quantity, ensuring a more intimate and enriching experience for travelers.

Planning ahead is key when traveling to Italy. By researching your destination and making necessary reservations or arrangements in advance, you can ensure a smooth journey. This is particularly important if you have specific needs or preferences. Whether it's booking accessible accommodations or securing tickets to popular attractions, early planning will help you avoid any unnecessary stress.

Pack Appropriately For All Weather Conditions

Italy experiences a range of weather throughout the year, so it's crucial to pack appropriate clothing. Make sure to bring layers that can be easily added or removed based on temperature fluctuations. Additionally, carry a copy of your passport and any important documents. Don't forget to pack any necessary medications and travel insurance details, ensuring you're well-prepared for any unforeseen circumstances.

Learn Some Italian Basic Phrases

While many Italians speak English, making an effort to speak some Italian can enhance your travel experience. Learning a few basic Italian phrases such as "ciao" (hello), "grazie" (thank you), and "buongiorno" (good morning/afternoon) can go a long way in building connections and showing appreciation for the local culture. Italians are known for their warmth and hospitality, and attempting to communicate in their language will surely earn you smiles and friendly responses.

Stay Hydrated and Savour the Culinary Delights

Italy's picturesque landscapes often come with sunny weather, especially during the summer months. To stay hydrated and ensure your well-being, make it a priority to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Carry a refillable water bottle and take advantage of the numerous drinking fountains available across cities.

Additionally, don't miss the opportunity to indulge in the country's delectable cuisine. Savor authentic pasta dishes, mouthwatering pizzas, and gelato that will tempt your taste buds at every corner. Italian cuisine is renowned worldwide, and for good reason. From the rich flavors of authentic pasta dishes to the thin-crust perfection of mouthwatering pizzas, Italy offers a gastronomic journey like no other.

Explore the local trattorias and osterias, where you can indulge in regional specialties prepared with love and tradition. Every region in Italy has its own culinary gems, each with a unique twist on classic Italian flavors. Whether you find yourself in the hearty flavors of Bolognese sauce in Emilia-Romagna, the fresh seafood delights of the Amalfi Coast, or the rustic charm of a Tuscan trattoria, your taste buds will be in for an extraordinary treat.

Dining In Italy

Embrace the Italian way of dining, where meals are meant to be savored and enjoyed. Take your time, relish each bite, and allow yourself to fully immerse in the culinary traditions of this beloved country. Whether you're sitting at a lively piazza, enjoying a leisurely outdoor meal, or discovering hidden gems tucked away in narrow alleyways, the food in Italy will delight you at every turn.

So, when you embark on your Italy tours for seniors, be sure to make food a priority. Allow yourself to fully indulge in the country's delectable cuisine, and let the flavors transport you to a place of pure culinary bliss. After all, Italian cuisine is not just about nourishment; it's an art, a celebration of life, and an essential part of the Italian experience. Bon appétit!

Utilize Italy's Efficient Public Transportation

Italy boasts an efficient public transportation system, including trains, buses, and trams. Opting for these modes of transportation can provide convenience and economic benefits, particularly in crowded cities like Rome, Florence, and Venice. Embrace the local way of life by hopping on a train to reach your destination or exploring the picturesque countryside through a scenic bus journey. It's not just a practical choice but also an opportunity to immerse yourself in the Italian way of life.

Embrace the Art of Slow Travel

Italy is a country brimming with historical wonders, awe-inspiring art, and vibrant cultural experiences. With so much to see and do, it can be tempting to rush from one landmark to another. However, it's important to embrace the art of slow travel and savor each moment. By not overloading your itinerary, you can truly appreciate the beauty and essence of the places you visit.

format_quote Testimonials

A few days ago, my Wife and I returned from the North Continental Tour. We had never taken any tours before and, although we heard great things about Perillo, we weren’t quite sure what to expect. I am pleased to report that the tour exceeded all of our expectations. The hotels were excellent and in perfect proximity to see the many sites of Italy. Getting to, from and into each of the places we visited was a breeze. I’m sure that I do not need to tell you how wonderful each of the places we visited were or how great the food was. But I did want to tell you that our tour guide Paola really made our trip the outstanding vacation that it was. Her knowledge of history, food, wine, geography etc. was exceptional. She was always available to answer any questions or provide any assistance. As you can see in these photos, we had a great time and enjoyed each other’s company.

Mr & Mrs. E.F.

I have never enjoyed a vacation as much as this one to Hawaii. I loved the beauty and to be able to learn so much Hawaiian Traditions and Cousin Bert was the best throughout out our vacation. We are honored to have Bert our new cousin in Hawaii. Our days were action packed and so very fun. We will return. Aloha And Mahalo.

Expert Advice

diana

Some of what you think of as traditional Italian foods are actually American interpretations and not widely available there. Some examples are heavy cream sauces such as alfredo, spaghetti and meatballs, and chicken parmigiana (however, you may find these items in more tourist-oriented restaurants).

“Uffizi Gallery in Florence is a world class museum with an incredible renaissance art collection. Enjoy a guided tour with a Local Specialist to make the experience more memorable, especially when in front of Botticelli’s stunning ‘Birth of Venus’ painting”

Pino, Travel Director

See Michelangelo's frescoed ceiling in the Sistine Chapel

One of the most important structures of the Catholic faith, the Vatican City’s Sistine Chapel is a must-see on a tour of Italy. Though the chapel walls have witnessed centuries of worship, it’s the renaissance ceiling paintings of Michelangelo that will leave you in awe.

Visit the glamorous Isle of Capri

Enjoy the classic Italian summer in Italy’s picture-perfect Gulf of Naples. Famed for its crystal grottos, dramatic coastlines and endless glamour, our trips to Italy are complete with a day of freedom spent under a striped umbrella, watching sailboats pass by.

Cruise your way through Venice

The charm found in the canals of Venice is nothing short of irresistible. Admire gothic palaces and postcard bridges whilst adrift in a gondola, gaining an understanding of life in a city that floats. Exploring a city by foot will never be the same after a trip to Venice.

Journey to the well-preserved ruins of Pompeii

An unfathomable history lesson is found in the archaeological ruins of Pompeii. Buried and preserved by the ash of a volcano eruption in the year 79, in this Italian town you will discover the progressive life of early Roman times as you walk within the parameters of an open-air time capsule of life on Earth.

Go shopping in Italy's fashion capital Milan

Armani, Gucci, Prada and Versace. These are some of the prestigious fashion brands that call the Italian city of Milan home. In between yearning through boutiques and department stores, stop to sample the city’s delicacies like breaded veal cutlet and ossobuco.

Our top 5 things to do in Italy

It's the moments of quiet stillness that take your breath away on a Trafalgar tour through Italy. Sitting in the calm halls of the Vatican. Floating on the canals of Venice. Standing beside the ruins of Pompeii.

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters are found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo dress Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River will show you the building’s architectural brilliance.

Vatican Museums

A collection of Christian artwork that spans centuries and stirs the soul is found in Rome’s Vatican Museums. From the intricate ceiling by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel to the detailed Pope portraits from the 16th century to today, you will be lost for words once inside this blessed museum complex.

Doge's Palace

Home to the leader of Venice from its opening in 1340, Doge’s Palace summarizes the sparkle of this city. An opulent example of Venetian Gothic architecture and home to numerous historical works, this museum is a must when you visit Venice.

Best museums in Italy

The epicenter of the Catholic faith and the birthplace of art’s most renowned masters. Our guided tours of Italy will take you to the many museums found here, whether in the Sistine Chapel, by the canals of Venice or in the grand galleries of Tuscany.

The authentic carbonara experience will take place in Rome, covered in salty Pecorino Romano cheese. A simple dish inspiring heart-warming meal times, this pasta will connect you with Italy’s rich culinary customs - an impressive evolution from its supposed heritage as a coal-miner’s meal.

Pollo alla Cacciatora

Literally translating to ‘hunter’ in Italian, cacciatore offers an appreciation for Italy’s meals of days gone by. Typically a preparation of rabbit or chicken, it’s the simmering tomato stew that makes this dish so mouthwatering. Satisfy a genuine hunger and consume with hand-ripped bread.

Italy tours are best served with an oversized slice of tiramisu. Cementing this country's obsession with espresso, this cake of layered biscuits soaked in coffee is the perfect after hours pick-me-up before an evening stroll through the charming streets.

Best food in Italy

A date with Italian food will likely start and end with a slice of pizza. But it’s the menu items that we share with you in between that will take your appreciation to new heights; think cacciatore and Carbonara with a slice of tiramisu in between.

What to pack for Italy

People packing for a tour

A classic linen outfit

The Italians are famous for their equal parts glamorous and effortless dress sense. Look the part with a few ensembles featuring classic linens in navy and white.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Italy, you might find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to remember the traditional Italian recipes you learn.

With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about Italian history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A small blanket

When exploring the soul-stirring setting of Tuscany, a picnic may call. Come prepared with a small blanket to cover in wine and cheese.

Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes

A classic memoir that brought the romance of Tuscany to the world, there’s no better time to read this book than when venturing through the country yourself.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and reusable toiletry bottles.
