Callum shinkwin scores european tour breakthrough at aphrodite hills cyprus open, share this article.

european tour aphrodite hills

Callum Shinkwin finally has a European Tour title to his name. For an Englishman who authored such a promising amateur career, including a turn on the 2013 Walker Cup team for Great Britain and Ireland, it has been a long time coming.

Shinkwin won the Aphrodite Hills Cyprus Open in Paphos, Cyprus, on Sunday in a playoff with Kalle Samooja. Shinkwin had been trailing by two shots after 70 holes but made up ground with a birdie on the 17th hole of his final round. He then made an all-time eagle – reaching the green at the par-5 closing hole from the rough but then holing a 54-foot eagle putt for a closing 63 that left him at 20 under.

Samooja couldn’t quite pull off the long eagle putt when he came through the 18th hole a few minutes later, which sent the two to a playoff. Shinkwin won with a birdie.

Shinkwin started his pro career on the European Challenge Tour, graduating to the major tour in 2015. He nearly won the 2016 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open but fell in a playoff to Rafa Cabrera Bello. After losing his Euro Tour card in 2018, Shinkwin played his way back and now is a first-time winner – the 11th one of those on this tour in 2020.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and now I have,” he said. “It’s been a bit of a shock but it feels great.

“I felt relaxed all day, I felt great, to be fair. 15 and 16 were playing me up all week. I was more nervous playing those two holes just to get through them than in the play-off or on the 18th. I managed to get through them really well and I felt great.”

The European Tour remains in Cyprus next week for the Aphrodite Hills Cyprus Showdown.

The PGA National Cyprus Golf Course at the Aphrodite Hills Resort near Paphos will host some of the biggest names in golf after being selected to host two European Tour events later this year.

The European Tour has confirmed it will be heading to Cyprus for the first time in its long history with the introduction of two new events, each carrying a prize fund of €1million.

The PGA National Cyprus Golf Course will host the Cyprus Open from October 29 – November 1, followed by the Cyprus Classic from November 5-8.

The back-to-back tournaments, which will be promoted by International Sports Management, will attract hundreds of the world’s top golfers. They will also be covered by European Tour Productions and Sky Sports television networks, reaching more than 400 million subscribers around the world.

Andrew Darker, Director of Golf at Aphrodite Hills Resort, said: “Hosting these two consecutive tournaments clearly turns our country’s vision into reality, to become the favourite European destination for sport and much, much more.

“Golf in Cyprus is growing on an upward scale as all of us join forces to promote our top-class facilities and the year-round excellent weather.

“We are looking forward to hosting two European Tour events and the sense of security offered by our Government in the face of the COVID-19 crisis is one of the major factors in helping us achieve our vision.”

european tour aphrodite hills

Aphrodite Hills Resort became the PGA National Cyprus in August 2017 and was selected for its exceptional golf course following its extensive €2.5M scheme of bunkers and greens improvements, clearly supporting its potential for hosting international golf tournaments, together with its broader leisure, accommodation and hospitality facilities which are of equally outstanding quality.

The award-winning course at Aphrodite Hills Resort was designed by the acclaimed architect, Cabell Robinson who also led the 2017 scheme of improvements. It overlooks the site where Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, is said to have emerged from the sea. A perfect mix of challenging bunkers, manicured fairways and generous tiered greens, combined with breath-taking scenery, make it one of the top courses in the Mediterranean.

Guy Moran, Head of Property Development at The PGA, commented: “We are delighted that PGA National Cyprus has been selected to host two European Tour events in the coming months.

“Aphrodite Hills Resort has invested in its golf course in recent years, and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the course has been maintained and kept in excellent condition. This announcement is just reward for the hard work Andrew (Darker) and his team have put in, making Aphrodite Hills Resort one of the ‘must-play’ courses in the region.

“The announcement is further evidence of the resort and Cyprus coming out of difficult times and I am confident the PGA National Cyprus Golf Course at Aphrodite Hills Resort will be a wonderful host for European Tour players.”

The announcement comes just days after The Belfry (the home of the PGA National England) successfully hosted the final tournament of the European Tour’s UK Swing series.

PGA National Cyprus

Spanning the contours of the landscape's two plateaus, Aphrodite Hills is carved through lakes, carob trees and delightful olive groves, all of which are part of its immediate position among the elite of European golf. With a view towards hosting prestigious international professional tournaments, Aphrodite Hills can be set up to test even the finest players, as evidenced when it hosted the prestigious PGA Europro Tour Championship in 2010. However, it is essentially a resort course, and as such the variety of tees ensures that this 18hole golf course also remains playable for the average visitor.

The course spans the magnificent cliff-tops to the south of Paphos, and affords incredible views of the Mediterranean Sea. Robinson has also used this landscape to create a number of awe-inspiring holes; the most notable are the short 7th, at the foot of a gaping ravine, and the nerve-jangling island green at the long closing hole.

Having been recently renovated in 2017, the course does justice to both the 5* quality and the natural beauty that are the trademarks of the resort, and should ensure a truly memorable golf holiday at Aphrodite Hills.

Aphrodite Hills boasts a top quality golf academy; sharpen your skills at the double-ended range, the dedicated short game zone, or the three-hole academy course.

Favourite holes (according to designer, Cabell B. Robinson): "If you can carry 200 metres with your driver, you should try the back tee on the 3rd. It looks forever over the gorge, but it is only that far to reach safety. It is a thrill of a lifetime shot if you succeed. The 7th deep within the bowels of the canyon is another dramatic shot, while fantastic sea views are to be had at the 8th and 15th. Personally I think reaching for the back pin position on the 12th needs the most courage, while the 16th is my pick for the toughest par 4, and the 18th is a reachable and wonderful par 5.

Overall Rating for Aphrodite Hills Resort Hotel

Very enjoyable would go again

We had not appreciated that this is mainly a Tui Resort for families. Breakfast is an very unpleasant Bunfight! Village Restaurants and Club House very good. David and Angie

Nice hotel, comfy rooms, great staff throughout. Food was good considering we were late in the season

Comfortable and easy feeling.

This hotel markets itself as a five star hotel but sadly it’s not. It needs some TLC and an update. Go expecting it to be top notch and you’ll be disappointed. Go expecting a 4 star hotel and you’ll be fine. Better towels, bed sheets that actually fit the bed, replenishment of used toiletries, a stocked mini bar, doors that look freshly painted and are not bashed about would all help. What’s with having to wear a wrist band all the time? Why do you have to pay a deposit for pool towels. In a 5 star hotel?!

Jus missed it,Lacked attention to detail in small things.

Fabulous hotel. Huge rooms. Food in hotel and restaurants top notch. Staff very friendly and helpful.

First class facilities with helpful staff everywhere. Quality room, superb food and a relaxed atmosphere. Well manicured and tough golf course - you have to have a buggy. Fantastic views on all holes too.

Good quality accommodation with excellent staff and customer service. Only gripe would be the indoor pool/Spa opening hours, which being restricted to 9am-6pm, were not really conducive with use before or after a day's golf (the very raison d'etre of the establishment?)

Great hotel, great staff and excellent facilities.

Really good rooms overlooking the course

Absolutely loved it. Staff were excellent and food was super.

Slight problem in the bathroom, the floor tiles in the shower area become very slippy so had to request a shower mat which did appear shortly afterwards following us being moved rooms to a disabled one which had grab handles and unfortunately the same tiles again very slippy.

Everything was fine

Hotel has transformed into an all inclusive resort focussed a lot more on families as opposed to golfers. Although the golf course is fantastic the rooms are beginning to tire and the cleaning is now done by non Cypriots and leaves a lot to be desired!! We had an airport pick up which didnt arrive. Thankfully a local rep knew the phone number of Aphrodite (as the main line just kept ringing out)and a taxi was arranged albeit nearly 2 hours after we landed. Definitely a case of lack of attention to details!! We love the golf and the food is OK

Lovely hotel and setting, food pretty average

Nothing open same menus

Very very disappointing, all the advertised facilities and restaurants were not open, the food was cold, inedible and very poor definitely not a 5 star facility. To make matters worse complaints whilst away and back home were not dealt with satisfactory by YGT

Absolutely loved it. Great food in all the restaurants. Room was comfortable and quiet with great views of golf course and the sea. Lovely staff and pool areas

The food was great in both buffet and a la carte restaurants, great breakfast too! Only had a few beers so no idea on the drinks but most people seemed to be enjoying. Staff in the bars/restaurants were really nice and friendly

We had an all inclusive option which worked out to be very good value, the hotel was fairly quiet, early February, and a really friendly homely feeling. Not sure it would feel as welcoming of it was busier.

Everything was perfect! Everybody was very kind. We have just enjoyed.

Understand Tui took over since last March. The quality overall been down graded.Disappointed for food, cleanness and staff efficiency.

Nice stay but parts of the hotel are becoming tired due to under-investment. Winter mode also meant showers at indoor heated pool were stone cold, as was the cooked breakfast buffet it seemed.

This is a comfortable hotel, albeit getting a little dated now it is very well kept in terms of cleanliness, rooms and beds are large and fairly quiet. We found the allinclusive option drinks to be below expectations especially wine and most of the food bordered on average - avoid Jasmine which was very poor.its a very easy location for golf and the hotel is easy to find too from the airport.

overall a fantastic place lovely friendly staff excellent restaurants very clean and tidy the golf course is immaculate and a real test the only negative is having to get up early every morning to secure a bed around the pool you should not have to do this in a 5* resort However overall a wonderful place for both golfers and non golfers highly recommended for a duel golf/holiday destination We will go back

Very much a family resort, lots of things for kids....more than adults. Golf club across the road from hotel so very convenient. Rooms are in blocks dotted around the resort, very comfy bed and well cleaned every day.

Group of 16 with no complaints from anyone. This must be a record!!

Excellent hotel. Only complaint is that the buffet style food was not always very hot.

Excellent. Very well sited room.Warn clients that village square facilities are not open in low season so need half board not b and b unless have a car to go elsewhere. we upgraded to hb.

Excellent staff

There were only 1 or 2 choices for food every night in December with about 6 restaurants closed due to off-season. No local food was on offer which was the biggest disappointment of the trip. However, the staff were fantastic and Laura at the Anoi pub was keeping the whole thing going almost single-handed.... The room was excellent with views over the course and impeccably clean. Taxi into Paphos for Greek food helped overcome the lack of local cuisine in the hotel (about 65 euros return).

Excellent room. Friendly staff.

Excellent golf course with nice signature hole

A challenging course, but great fun. Rounds can be slow due to high use. Good snacks/drinks prior to 10th tee and good toilets around course. Very friendly Marshalls. Cannot be walked unless ultra fit.

Despite being under renovation the course is in great condition, a challenge. The course staff are friendly and helpful and stayed on top of the speed of play as best they could. Highly recommend. Look forward to the next stay on Aphrodite Hills.

Brilliant day on the course, I was slightly late arriving but the staff were very helpful and got me out on the course as soon as I arrived. The starter was also really nice to deal with, gave me a heads up on what holes were the scenic holes for pictures and the marshalls on the course were also very welcoming. I had a good chat with one of them who advised me on the other courses around the area and also took a video for me on the signature par 3 7th.

Great course

Don't think I've ever seen a course in better condition and I have played around the world and Myrtle Beach. Greens were very fast.

Great course - greens super fast - we had a day when they had booking for large group and we ended up with 5.1/2 round Other than slow play - exceleent

The Clubs provided for golf hire were excellent. Latest models. The Greens were tricky but fun.

A great challenge of golf

Very popular course but still managed to get off as a two ball, very well organised, some difficult holes over ravines, but better on the second round when not so intimidated by them.

Course in good condition. 7th hole is worth the visit alone.

Great course, awesome views..

Will always be too busy.

As we played there before the greens were in a poor condition but the course was still very good

Lovely interesting course. Good condition considering they were going to commence course maintenance the following week. Staff were very amenable and friendly. Nice relaxed holiday.

Some challenging golf holes and buggy ride in particular is to be taken extremely carefully.

A very interesting course. Play was monitored and marshals kept people to time. We loved it.

Absolutely fantastic golf course. Spectacular holes. Fairways more like our own greens! Playable and enjoyable for mid handicappers like us. We all felt it was probably the best course we have ever played in terms of overall condition/scenery and overall experience. Stunning and we would obviously play again! The pace of play was slow, but we didn’t really mind as it was just wonderful to be out there on the course.

Disappointed with the service at the bar/restaurant. Very slow, and they seem short of staff. Both otherwise, at the pro shop and the marshals are excellent. We did have an incident when the caddy master wouldn’t allow us to leave our golf bags in the golf room, but that was eventually sorted.

Greens were pronged which impacted the course, had we known this was being done the week we went, we would of picked somewhere else

Very well maintained & structured course

Greens very fast, but open course off Yellows. Spectacular views. Short 7 hole over gully great fun. A mix of long and short holes for all handicaps to enjoy. Great clubhouse.

Fantastic golf course, and some of the most helpful, knowledgeable staff I’ve ever encountered. From the shop staff, to caddy masters and Dave the starter, all went above and beyond to make the experience enjoyable. There is one marshal who lets the rest down. On our first round, on a course we’d never played, he made it his mission to make us feel very uncomfortable. We were keeping pace with the group in front, and had pulled away from the group behind. For some reason this wasn’t good enough for this particular chap. He pulled up to tell us to pick up the pace. After I explained that we were actually waiting on every tee box for the group in front to clear the fairway (something we had absolutely no problem with by the way, why would you, on holiday in beautiful surroundings, no rush at all) he became very aggressive and confrontational. It was a bizarre encounter which ruined our first round here. This particular fellow needs to learn some etiquette and manners that every other staff member displays on a daily basis. He let them down massively. That was our only gripe. Other than him, it is an exceptional place to enjoy a round of golf. Views are breathtaking, the course is tricky without being overly difficult. Would highly recommend.

Fantastic course with crazy carries carries and a great finish. We loved it.

Played 4 rounds. 3 good speed 1 very slow. Waiting on every shot. Slope rating definitely should be higher due to difficulty of greens alone. Fantastic course in all. Lovely but tough finishing hole. Great views all round the course. Sit on the verandah and watch everyone tackle the 18th.

Brilliant experience - will be back

Slow! Using buggies does not make a relaxed round! People rushing around, very frenetic. Lovely course but needs to sort timings out bit better, people behind too close. But all in all great condition and we did enjoy each round.

All the group agreed that even though all the other 3 courses in the Paphos area are really very good indeed Aphrodite is the must play course in the area. Simply stunning with 18 totally individual and very interesting holes. The whole thing is spectacular and the 7th is almost the 8th wonder of the world. Loved it👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Excellent course. Extremely fast greens! Thoroughly enjoyed the facilities and would definitely comeback. Recommend highly.

Great experience! So many interesting holes. Really glad we played it twice to appreciate and enjoy the nuances.

Lovely scenic course with great facilities and friendly staff, also very well organised.

another great course just greens very hard to read made of two types of grasses

This is a beautiful course and a challenge of our golf. Plenty of variety in the holes. Our handicaps are 14 and 18 so the course was a real test. The greens were very, very fast!

Big challenging course..great experience.!

the round was slow until the marshall split the group in front into 2 x 2 balls.

My wife and I have been married for 50 years and have played world class golf all over the world. Simply, it does not get any better than Aphrodite Hills, PGA National. The views are to die for and right to the point, every serious golfer should make it a point to play this course and see how you do on the world famous 7th hole which is definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Great golf course in superb condition Great amenities range and putting areas Staff couldn’t be more helpful, will be back

Outstanding course

Great mix of holes. Can open your shoulders at times off the tee, but then at other times caution! Big greens with lots of movement. Great.

3 x rounds only two completed,2nd one we gave up after 13 holes as a Cyprus PGA competition was in front of us. As a slightly disabled golfer I found it extremely hard for a number of reasons. Very hilly, buggy restrictions near the greens meant a lot of walking even using the VIP GMS system and also on most of the tees one had to climb up steep inclines from the cart path. The different type of grass on top of plastic liners surrounding all the greens resulted in the ball just dying as it landed, very frustrating. Overall delighted that we had a good holiday however would we go back ...... probably not!! Staff throughout were terrific.

The course was fantastic but a hard test especially when the wind Was up.

The only downside here was that they had recently been working on the greens. There had been heavily timed and sanded which made them a lottery to put on. Bad luck on our part I suppose as I suspect they will be very good when they recover. A very good course and lovely views. Buggies essential however fit you think you are!!

Best golf course i have ever played .5stars all the way .everyone carnt do enough love it .

10th tee was a white knuckle ride! but great views.

Lovely course that you had to plot your way around greens on the fast side

Well organised with buggies being almost mandatory. Buggies are arranged outside the Pro Shop with tee times displayed. The buggies have GPS, but this can sometimes be difficult to see and "nags" when you do not keep up with their idea of pace of play. This gets annoying when it tells you to speed up whilst you are held up by the group in front. Course is in pristine condition with some of the best greens I have played and has some brilliant holes, especially the 6th which is a Par 3 over a ravine. Large clubhouse overlooking the 18th green offers reasonable food and drinks. If you are staying in one of the apartments, some are a mile away from the Pro Shop and there is no transport to collect you, so you need either a hire car or arrange a taxi. Glad I played the course and would recommend but wouldn't rush back as there are courses that are as good and better value elsewhere in Europe.

Providing you tee off relatively early the speed of play is OK but afternoons can be over 5 hours!!!! However its a great course and in our top ten in Europe.

We where pestered by a course Marshall from the 10th tee , playing a four ball we finished 5 minutes early when measured against the “ course time sheet “ . We held nobody up nor did we have to wait for the group in front . The group behind finished 15 minutes behind . I saw no reason to ask that we speed up and inspect our pace of play on several holes , it almost spoilt the experience.

Lovely course. Played it twice. Second time disappointed by green staff. Watering greens whilst putting. Talking on mobile phones. 5ish holes this happened on. Did pass on concerns to golf staff who were very apologetic.

Some great holes especially the 7th signature hole. Really enjoyed it

Great course with fast, challenge greens, firm fairways and fantastic views. Some really fun and interesting holes, especially the 7th over the valley. The practice facilities are also first class, the pro shop was very friendly and the terrace overlooking the green is a great place for a post-round drink.

Great course but a buggy is a must. Very steep hills and long distances from greens to tees (1 km from 2nd green to 3rd tee!). However, course in excellent condition, fairways super and fastest greens I’ve ever played!

Beautiful course. Spoilt by slow play. On the 8th hole we 7 buggies ! More Marshall’s needed on the 7th to speed up play.

the course was good but it was very slow. some of the people on the course did not know about golf rules and were not very good golfers

Terrible abhorrent service at the golf reception, by a very rude ignorant ex pat bald guy. Shame as the course is a good test and in very good condition, but the experience ruined by the poor service

The course was fantastic ands a very good challenge, extremely well maintained and the views were stunning

The course was in excellent condition, some of the greens were sadly not looked after by the players repairing their pitch marks but overall 9.5 out of 10. Pace of play was excellent which was an improvement over the last time I played there.

Very enjoyable joined with another 2 ball very good English golfers. Hire clubs not the best!

Played 3 rounds and found the course very busy compared to previous experiences, and with some players struggling to manage the course, and not getting chance to play through, so long rounds.

The course was in superb condition and we really enjoyed playing here.

Lovely course with spectacular views

The day was spoilt by a very nasty and aggressive person in the restaurant area asking for our proof of vaccination. Without allowing us to say we had it (which we had) he already said we would have to leave if we didn’t and he was right in our faces. He was told to calm down as we had our vaccination info on our phones. Watching him carefully he did not ask any of the locals coming in for vaccination proof. Sometime later another group of UK golfers came in and he launched into his tirade again. They politely told him to fxxx off turned round went downstairs to the golf shop demanded a refund and left !!! That’s why we are giving one star for facilities. Glad we didn’t leave because the course was fantastic with great show holes. The starter and rest of the staff were really friendly and nothing was too much trouble.

Fantastic place

A fantastic golf course, one of the best I have seen and I've seen plenty. A fair test of good golf, if you've not got your game you'll get punished but that is how it should be.

Great course and very friendly

Good course well worth playing

From entering the pro shop to leaving you were treated superbly The course was a pleasure to play Unfortunately the green maintenance programme had just started but still playable A very long course 10km distance covered Definately require a buggy Well worth the green fee

Working on the course before Europe golf competition

One of my most favourite courses .... amazing

Because there is a European competition in a few weeks, there was a lot of ongoing work on the course and buggies were kept on the paths which caused a bit of faffing during a round.

The course was being prepared for a European tour event which meant that there was greens maintenance throughout our stay. Buggies were allowed on paths only which meant the round was slow.

Really fair test of golf, play well and relatively easy - play badly and it can punish you. Super fast green and tricky to read. Green fee is expensive and 5 Euros for 40 balls on the range felt a bit mean..decent facilities though

We had two rounds during our trip, both days were very enjoyable

Course sits on top of a ravine with holes on plateaus either side of the ravine, this means buggies are compulsory. The distance between holes 2 and 3 involve a 1km ride along the buggy path! Course was good but squeezed into the available space. Wouldn’t pay £142 to play this again 🤨

Because there had been rain in previous weeks we were restricted to buggies on cart paths only, this had a big impact on pace of play. Unfortunately it is a course where buggies are needed because of the long distances between some greens and tees.

Most of things were perfect. The green was a bit too slow. The maintenance work were progressing while we played. Lunch restaurant was very nice. The service at the club storage area was excellent and the people were very kind. We have just enjoyed..

Certainly needed the provided buggies. The course was certainly very different but enjoyable. Greens were quite slow, which was a surprise giving their appearance. Club house and facilities were excellent. The only down side was I let my wife loose in the well stocked pro shop. Bad decision. Over all an excellent day.

Weather was not like last year and we realised that we should come before early November season.

Thankfully this is a buggy course to speed up play, greens best early morning as get plenty walking on later in afternoon. we were unable to complete our first round due to light despite starting before 1pm, there is an absence of marshalls to move on slow play. fairways had been worked on so we didnt see it at its best!!

The staff on the checking in desk were very dismissive.

A wonderful course in a fantastic location with great views. the course is tough and any shots not on the fairway are a real challenge to find in the deep rough as the ball nestles below the fluffy rough. the greens are in magnificent condition as is the rest of the course there is a real attention to detail that is obvious from every tee the drive in the buggy down to the 7th tee is not for the faint hearted but added to the experience. some wonderful holes and the course in my opinion is every bit as good as most in the Algarve. An early tee time pre 8.00am or around 5.00pm is recommended as the temperature does get extreme overall a really great course and fantastic helpful staff.

Buggy is essential as long walks between holes. Course in great condition. Staff very helpful and friendly.

This course has a big makeover and looks and plays superb it's so well organised from start to finish a real pleasure to play. For £750 pp for unlimited golf & your own villa with pool by the 1st tee you can't go wrong. STUNNING.

The most wonderful golf course I’ve played to date

Buggys ready each day labelled up for our group with individual start times. Four rounds. 2 x Texas scramble, 1 x best two scores to count, 1 x Individual stableford for our groups annual trophy. Third year playing the course. Kept to suggested times each round. Restricted to 1 bottle if water pp or buy at €1 (free at hotel )penny-pinching or what?

Enjoyed the course, we had played there before a long time ago so it was nice to be able to recall some if the holes. Course staff very helpful.

True test of Golf, throughly enjoyed the course.

fantastic course each hole was set up to provide different challenges panoramic views well marshalled. only negative was the close proximity of villas especially the water aerobic classes which left the instructor screaming when on the tee

Great course, well presented

Nice course, very picturesque, green speed seemed a bit variable (front nine was fast, back nine seemed very slow). Some places you just can’t miss the fairway (e.g. left of 8, right of 13) and the 7th is a unique experience. Enjoyable rounds on both occasions we played it.

Very enjoyable- fab course excellent views

Buggies essential on this course. Shame thst you had to go off of the course quite a distance from the greens. Long drives between holes and not for the faint hearted travelling down into the reveanes. Some tricky holes greens were very slow up to other courses in the area

All very good - no complaints

Marshalls kept games moving warning 4 balls to let us 2 ball through. Excellent ground staff effort.

Resort allows anyone on course, rounds take ridiculous amount of time even with buggies. Ladies in proshop not customer service orientated and rude. Rangers on course did the best they could with slow play.

Quite an experience, as the course is spread across a huge ravine, so buggies were mandatory (but free) and the paths were vertiginous! Greens tricky, but lovely course overall. Staff all really friendly and helpful. Practice facilities very good.

The course was in excellent condition for December, there were many varied holes with some very challenging tee positions if you choose to play off the back tees! Took our own clubs so not sure what clubs to hire were like but staff there were very accommodating and facilities were excellent.

Buggies mandatory - 1000m between greens and tees twice. Because of recent rain, buggies had to stay on tracks. 5.3hr round! finished in twilight. But good course. I would have liked to go again. Cancelled my second round because of weather. Offered replacement, but heading home next day

3rd green was very poor and around all the fringes of the greens were very poor very little grass. not value for what we paid.

Can't find the experience you're looking for? Make your own! Tell us what you'd like and our friendly golf specialists will help make it happen. No change fees.

Aphrodite Hills

Paphos – goddess aphrodite’s birthplace and a unesco world heritage site.

by Niladri Bose

Aphrodite Hills is a resort area in the west coast of Cyprus in the Paphos district. It is only a short drive away from the Mediterranean beach area. Named after Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, passion, and beauty, it has the biggest and the best golf course on the island. Not just casual golfing, Aphrodite Hills has over the years also hosted many professional golf tournaments including the European Tour events. The latest European Tour tournament was held in the golf resort in 2020.

The resort has a village center built in traditional style. There are many gardens, fountains, play areas, shops, boutiques, cafes, bakeries, and restaurants. Best Time to Visit

Aphrodite Hills Beach Paphos Cyprus

You can visit the Aphrodite Hills resort throughout the year. But the best time to visit the resort is from March to September. Spring between March and June and summer between June and September are both good. The weather is pleasant. It can be hot during the summer, but the resort’s lush greenery will make it very comfortable.

You can also visit the resort for golfing throughout the year, even during the winter. Cyprus has warm winters because of the Mediterranean. In 2020, the golf tournaments were held between end October and early November.

The summer season between June and September is hot. There will rarely be any clouds. The evening, though, is very pleasant. It is pleasant even during the day because the resort is located in a higher altitude, because of the lush greenery everywhere, and the wind from the Mediterranean. Autumn, between October and November, is cooler. Winter is between December and January. But you do not need woolens usually. The nearby Troodos Mountains will obviously be much colder.

Golfing at Aphrodite Hills

Designed by Cabell Robinson, a famous golf course architect from Washington DC, USA, it is an 18-hole golf course that is spread over 6,877 yards. It was opened officially in 2002 and since then has hosted many golf tournaments, including European Tour events, the latest in the end of 2020. The course has also won several awards, including the prestigious International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) Awards in Cannes. 680 golfers from around the world cast their votes and selected this course out of more than 2,000 worldwide.

The course has tiered greens and challenging bunkers. Throughout the course, there are carob and olive trees. It is on two plateaus of a mountain. A ravine divides them. You will get superb Mediterranean Sea views from many places in the course. You will get stunning views from almost all the holes, but the 7 th hole offers the best views.

It is a great course for golfers of all levels, both intermediate and advanced players. There are also learning programs for beginners. The facilities here are some of the best in Europe. To make them even better, the authorities have recently invested 2.5 million Euros to modernize the golf course. The bunkers and greens have been rebuilt.

There is a second smaller golfing area, called the Secret Valley Golf Course, close by. Both the courses overlook the Aphrodite Rock, which is believed to be the birthplace of the Greek goddess. The rock, beach area, and the historic city of Paphos can be reached easily from the golf course. They are all very close.

The village center has Greco-Roman architecture. The houses are made of locally quarried stone. There is a chapel, souvenir shops, a market, restaurants, splashing fountains, an art gallery, and fragrant gardens.

Five things to know ahead of the inaugural Aphrodite Hills Cyprus Open

50th Country visited by European Tour

This week marks a significant milestone as Cyprus becomes the 50th country visited by the European Tour in its 48-year history.

The location of this week’s venue is Aphrodite Hills, situated in Paphos, and is the first ever leisure and golf development of its kind in the country. Its 18-hole championship golf course is just one of six courses across the entire nation.

A new challenge awaits

European Tour stars will experience a new test over the award-winning Aphrodite Hills at both this week’s Aphrodite Hills Cyprus Open and next week’s Aphrodite Hills Cyprus Showdown.

The course itself, a 6,956-yard par 71, was officially opened in 2002, and was designed by acclaimed architect Cabell Robinson.

With the backdrop of the Mediterranean and built on two plateaux separated by a dramatic ravine, the course is a visual spectacle. One of the most striking holes is the par three seventh, where players have to navigate over a 140-yard gorge.

There are also several unique parts of the course’s landscape which have been retained, including an 18th century kiln on the first fairway and an ancient olive press on the eighth fairway.

Inside the field

Laurie Canter will head to Cyprus after a runner-up finish at last week’s Italian Open – his third top ten and second runner-up since the season restarted in July.

He’s joined in the field by no less than 20 players who have claimed European Tour victories in the last two seasons, including compatriots Andy Sullivan and Sam Horsfield – who have both earned titles in the past couple of months.

Thomas Detry, who finished as the runner-up behind Horsfield on two occasions this year, is making his first start since the BMW PGA Championship, and is the highest ranked player on the Race to Dubai in the field this week.

The legend of Aphrodite Hills

The resort and its surrounding area holds several connections to both ancient mythology and history, and was built in the vicinity of three important archaeological sites – the Rantidi Forest, the plateau of Hadjiabdoulla, and the man-made mount of Laona.

With reference to the Greek Goddess of Love, Aphrodite Hills is aptly named after the actual Aphrodite’s Hill in Ancient mythology. It’s unique location in Kouklia overlooks her birthplace (where she emerged from the sea), and Rantidi Forest (where the resort is located) is where Aphrodite would spend most of her time hunting with the eternally youthful Adonis, who was the deity of plans and rebirth. When the site was excavated, thousands of terracotta statue fragments were recovered, as well as more than 200 inscriptions, all of which reflect the legend of Adonis and Aphrodite.

A new event and a new trophy

The inaugural Aphrodite Hills Cyprus Open will see its first winner crowned on Sunday, and the champion will be rewarded with the new perpetual trophy – a bespoke design created by Asprey.

Commissioned by International Sports Management (ISM) and the European Tour, the perpetual trophy took 85 hours to complete and was expertly crafted by master silversmiths in the Asprey workshops, housed above the Mayfair store in Asprey’s New Bond Street. Asprey also produced the Harry Vardon Trophy, awarded to the winner of the season-long Race to Dubai, and The Ryder Cup.

The perpetual trophy features specialist hand engraved detail highlighting its Cypriot identity with the pierced-out outline of the island itself and olive branches, taking Asprey’s Master Engraver two days to complete. The gold-plated interior reflecting through the piercing to give added definition to the 65cm tall trophy, which stands proudly on a hand-carved wood base.

Who is playing in the 2020 Aphrodite Hills Cyprus Open?

Nicolas Colsaerts will be looking to build on his impressive showing in Italy when he tees off at 08.25 in the Aphrodite Hills Cyprus Open.

As ever, Aussies out of the country can access their favourite streaming service just like they would at home can  use a VPN to watch their European Tour live stream of choice.

We recommend VPN services in the context of legal recreational uses. For example

1. Accessing a service from another country (subject to the terms and conditions of that service) 2. Protecting your online security and strengthening your online privacy when abroad

We do not support or condone the illegal or malicious use of VPN services.
