Visiting Qatar: The Complete Guide (2024)

In 2019 Qatar witnessed a huge leap in visitor arrivals with 2.1 million visitors, a double-digit growth compared to 2018. This article explains the types of visas, when to visit, public transport, local attractions, and other important things to consider before visiting Qatar.

Qatar offers several visa options for visitors. Here are the common types of visit visa options:

Gateway to Qatar

Qatar is centrally located globally, close to Europe, Africa, and Asia. Flights from around the world touch down at Qatar’s Hamad International Airport daily, making Qatar the perfect place for layovers and visits.

Doha, the capital city of Qatar, is modern and rapidly developing, with much construction underway. It is home to most of the country’s best museums and examples of cultural heritage. 

Qatar connects to various destinations worldwide, making it an extremely busy transit spot. In fact, Hamad International Airport (HIA) has fast become the global gateway for overseas travellers. Opened in April 2014, the state-of-the-art airport is conveniently located just south of Doha city.

HIA is certified as a 5 Star Airport by Skytrax and was ranked the Best Airport in the World at the 2021 and 2022 Skytrax World Airport Awards. The airport currently serves more than 30 million passengers annually and is undergoing further expansion to support more than 50 million.

Qatar Airways, the award-winning national carrier, is certified as a 5-Star Airline for its airport and onboard product and staff service quality.

The Qatar Airways network connects Doha with more than 150 popular destinations worldwide, including most major cities throughout the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australasia & North, and South America.

Cruise tourism brings over 100 thousand visitors annually to Qatar, enabling them to enjoy the many landmarks that are mere minutes from Doha Port. The peak season runs from October to May, allowing visitors to enjoy the country’s pleasant winter weather during that time.

Qatar has two major seasons: Summer and Winter. May to September can be considered summer, while December to February is the cooler season. March to April and October to November are the transition months.

Summer temperatures are routinely 50°C during the day and often more than 40°C at night. It’s important to wear sunblock, cover yourself and drink plenty of water when going outside during the day.

During cooler months (December to February), the temperatures average between 14°C and 25°C on most days.

Since most of the attractions are within a couple of hours distance from Doha, you do not have to stay at different hotels during your Qatar vacation.

Doha has the presence of almost all major hotel chains in the world. You can choose from a range of Qatar hotels from TripAdvisor .

Doha’s city centre is just 15 minutes drive from the airport by car. To get from HIA to the city, you can take Airport Taxis available at Arrivals Terminal or request your hotel to arrange a private hotel transfer. It is possible to rent a car at the airport or at the hotels. An international driving license is required for visitors to drive in Qatar.

For travelling around the city, you can use the official taxi network called Karwa Taxi or pre-book a taxi using mobile apps like Uber or Careem . Even though Qatar has a network of public buses, they are not recommended for first-time visitors as their frequency is not guaranteed.

Since Qatar is an Islamic country, it is important to dress appropriately. Loose-fitting and modesty-covering clothing is the preferred style. Women are not required to wear the hijab or veil their heads in public.

Tourists are generally expected to cover their shoulders and knees at a minimum. Beachwear is acceptable at private beaches and swimming pools inside hotels.

The national currency of Qatar is the Qatari Riyal (QAR). One QAR is equivalent to 100 Dirhams. Qatar Banknotes are available in values of QAR 500, 200, 100, 50, 10, 5, and 1. Coins in circulation are 25 Dhs (QAR 0.25) and 50 Dhs (QAR 0.5).

Since Qatar Riyal is pegged to US Dollar, the value of USD 1 is around QAR 3.64. Banks and ATMs across the country take major international credit cards and debit cards.

• Normally, the work week in Qatar is from Sunday to Thursday.
• Government offices operate from 7 am to 2 pm.
• Private offices operate from 8 am to 4 pm, or 9 am to 5 pm.
• Shopping malls generally are open from 10 am to 10 pm and up to midnight on weekends.

Most shops and offices change their working hours during Ramadan . Visitors should refrain from eating and drinking in public, except in hotels, during the hours between sunrise and sunset.

Yes, Qatar is a very safe country to visit as the crime rates are low. Violent crimes, especially towards foreigners and women, are extremely rare.

Hi Shibla, In some cases, if your work visa is approved, you may be allowed to change your visa type without leaving the country. There will be an additional fee. Note that this may not be possible in all cases.

Hello. We arrive in Qatar at DOH November 24 at 6 AM. Are we allowed to leave the airport and visit the area for 8-10 hours that day? Thank you in advance for your reply.

Hi Robert, Due to the World Cup, the visa-on-arrival service (or any kind of tourist visa) is unavailable during that period. As per the current rule, you need a Hayya Card to visit Qatar from 1 November, and it is only available for those with a match ticket. There is still five weeks to go before your travel date. So please check back after a few weeks in case the rules change.

Qatar Airways has one of the world’s youngest airline fleets, with an average aircraft age of approximately 5 years.

Qatar Airways uses a hub-and-spoke model, connecting passengers coming from “spokes” in its network through its central hub, Hamad International Airport (DOH ), located in Qatar’s capital city, Doha .

Currently, Qatar Airways uses 4 different types of planes on flights to the U.S.:

• Airbus A350-1000
• Airbus A350-900
• Boeing 777-300ER
• Boeing 777-200LR

There are plenty of ways to earn Avios for flights on Qatar Airways . Oneworld partners are eligible to book Qatar Airways flights so long as Qatar Airways releases award availability to these partners.

At a high level, we recommend using American Airlines AAdvantage , Japan Airlines Mileage Bank , Cathay Pacific Asia Miles , and British Airways Executive Club to book Qatar Airways flights. You can also use Qatar Airways’ frequent flyer program, Privilege Club , to book award travel.

The best loyalty program for you depends on the types of transferable points you have, the route you’re flying, and which cabin class you’re booking.

Qatar Airways first class is only offered on its Airbus A380 aircraft, of which the carrier only has 10.

The A380’s generally only flown to premier markets like London-Heathrow (LHR) and Paris (CDG), and they’re not deployed on any U.S. routes.

Qatar Airways uses 4 different types of planes on flights to the U.S.

In this section, we’ll walk you through the different aircraft, including our top choices, and we’ll break down each type’s seat map and give you our recommendations for the best seats.

Qatar has frequent and unannounced equipment swaps. This is less common for U.S. flights but is worth mentioning.

Qatar Airways A350-1000 Qsuite

Our favorite iteration of Qatar’s Qsuite is found on the high-tech Airbus A350-1000 . Why? This newer aircraft is one of the most fuel-efficient planes and boasts superior construction.

The A350-1000 features the most expansive cabin body of any class, with vertical sidewalls and larger windows, creating an extra spacious feel. It also features the largest overhead bins of any aircraft, for maximum storage.

The cabin is constructed from carbon composites and other alloys that minimize noise and maximize humidity for a more comfortable flight.

Qatar’s Airbus A350-1000s feature Qsuites business class arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration across a larger forward cabin with a minicabin behind it. Each suite measures 21.5 inches wide and 80 inches long in bed mode.

Here’s Qatar Airways’ A350-1000 seat map:

The E and F seats are the famous double-bed suites — they’re also rear-facing, which is a unique novelty. We recommend these “honeymoon” seats to couples traveling together.

Odd-numbered A and K seats are the best for solo travelers thanks to the extra privacy you get from the aisle compared to B and J seats.

Families traveling together can reserve quad Qsuites at 1E/1F/2D/2G, 3E/3F/4D/4G. These seats feature movable panels that allow passengers to transform the space into a social area, allowing those traveling to dine together. They can also be turned back into more private, individual suites.

At the moment, Qatar Airways flies to the following U.S. cities with the A350-1000:

• Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – Doha (DOH) on QR 730
• Houston (IAH) – Doha (DOH)
• Los Angeles (LAX) – Doha (DOH) on QR 740 and QR 742
• Miami (MIA) – Doha (DOH)
• New York (JFK) – Doha (DOH)
• San Francisco (SFO) – Doha (DOH)
• Washington, D.C. (IAD) – Doha (DOH) on QR 708 and QR 710

Currently, all of Qatar’s Airbus A350-1000s feature Qsuites!

Qatar Airways A350-900

Qatar features 2 variations on their A350-900 aircraft. Both feature business class in a 1-2-1 configuration. However, one variation features Qsuites and the other doesn’t. Currently, only about one-third of Qatar’s A350-900s feature Qsuites. More on that below.

Qatar Airways’ A350-900 Qsuites are almost identical to those on the A350-1000. The main difference is that the -900 has a slightly shorter range and a smaller passenger capacity.

The Qsuite has the same specs: 21.5 inches wide and 80 inches long in bed mode. However, on the -900, there are 36 suites in total — 12 in the rear cabin and 24 in the forward cabin.

The double beds are found at the E and F seat pairs — which is what we recommend for couples traveling together. If you’re flying solo, you’re probably better off reserving an A or K window seat.

You’ll find the Qsuite-equipped A350-900 aircraft on the following routes to and from the U.S.:

• Boston (BOS) – Doha (DOH)

Qatar Airways 777-300ER

Our next choice is the Boeing 777-300ER . It offers a high seating capacity but may be less comfortable than the A350-1000 and A350-900, as it doesn’t have some of the high-tech features newer aircraft have.

Qatar currently operates 56 different 777-300ER variations — more than half of them featuring Qsuites.

Qsuites are slightly smaller on the 777-300ER, at 21 inches wide instead of 21.5 inches. The seat pitch and bed length are the same, though, at 80 inches each.

The configuration is also the same: a 1-2-1 layout with alternating forward- and rear-facing seats. The 42 Qsuites are spread across 2 cabins, with 24 suites in the front cabin and 18 in the rear cabin.

For those traveling by themselves, we recommend the A and K seats . We think the best seats are 10A and 10K because of their location in the minicabin away from the lavatories.

From a privacy perspective, 11E and 11F are the best double-bed Qsuites for those traveling together.

Qatar Airways’ 777-300ER is found on the following U.S. routes:

• Atlanta (ATL) – Doha (DOH)
• Chicago (ORD) – Doha (DOH) on QR 726
• New York (JFK) – Doha (DOH) on QR 702/704/706
• Seattle (SEA) – Doha (DOH)

Qatar Airways 777-200LR

The last Qsuite product we’ll discuss is on the Boeing 777-200LR, which is simply the long-range variant of the 777-200.

Qatar also features 2 different variations on the 777-200LR. Currently, 7 of the 9 Boeing 777-200LRs feature Qsuites. However, the other 2 feature business class seats in a 2-2-2 configuration. The 2-2-2 business class is a significant letdown compared to those 777-200LRs featuring Qsuites.

The Qsuites are the same as those found on the 777-300ER, coming in at 21 inches wide and 80 inches long in bed mode.

There are 42 Qsuites in total, with 18 in the rear minicabin and 24 in the forward cabin:

We always recommend picking minicabin seats if possible, and this is no exception. If booking the minicabin in the rear is possible, solo travelers should reserve the 10A or 10K window seats , while couples should book 11E/F or 9E/F .

The long-range 777-200LR is found on the following routes:

• Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – Doha (DOH) on QR 732

Qatar Airways A350-900 Business Class

The last aircraft we’ll discuss in the business class section is the non-Qsuite-equipped Airbus A350-900, the other variation of the A350-900 aircraft.

This is our least preferred option, as it’s the only aircraft flown to the U.S. without Qsuites installed.

This business class cabin consists of reverse-herringbone seats in a 1-2-1 configuration with direct aisle access and fully lie-flat seats.

Each of these 36 seats measures 22 inches wide and 80 inches long in bed mode. There are 24 seats in the forward cabin and 12 in the rear minicabin.

Here’s what the seat map looks like:

The most significant difference between Qsuites and these reverse-herringbone seats is that Qsuites have much more privacy and versatility. This more traditional reverse-herringbone product doesn’t have a tall seat shell, a sliding door, or the ability to create double beds or quad suites.

Since these seats are all more or less the same, our recommendation is to simply avoid seats near the lavatories and galleys , if possible.

Qatar Airways has quite a varied wide-body fleet, with business class configurations varying slightly. Qsuites business class is most often found on Qatar’s Airbus A350-1000s and its Boeing 777-200LRs.

Qatar Airways doesn’t offer any flights with premium economy to or from the U.S.

Now it’s time to talk about coach class.

As you’ll find out, we have strong preferences for — and aversions to — specific seats and planes .

Qatar Airways A350-900 Economy Class

Of all the possible options, our favorite economy cabin on Qatar Airways is the Airbus A350-900 (non-Qsuite) .

Why? It’s simple: The seats are the widest, and a handful of preferential seats have extra legroom.

Each seat is 18 inches wide , which isn’t industry-leading, but it is the widest you’ll find on Qatar. Each of the 247 seats has 31 to 32 inches of legroom, and they’re arranged (mostly) in a 3-3-3 configuration.

The best seats are 17D, 17E, 17F, and Row 30 . All these seats have extra legroom, though Row 30 seats may be slightly worse due to their proximity to the lavatories and galleys.

If possible, you should avoid seats in rows 16, 43, and 44. Row 16 seats have restricted legroom, while rows 43 and 44 are at the back of the plane with limited recline and right next to the galleys and lavatories.

Qatar Airways A350-900 (With Qsuites) Economy Class

Next up is Qatar Airways’ A350-900 (with Qsuites) economy.

Again, there are 247 seats, but they are slightly narrower at around 17.5 inches wide. The seat pitch is the same, though, at 31 to 32 inches each, and the 3-3-3 configuration is the same, as shown below:

The best seats are at row 30 , thanks to the exit row affording extra legroom. Row 16 seats could be good for extra legroom, but the bulkhead might restrict the “stretchability” of extra-tall flyers.

Avoid rows 28, 29, 43, and 44 , because they’re close to the lavatories and can’t recline as much as the other seats.

Qatar Airways 777-200LR Economy Class

The Boeing 777-200LR can fit 230 travelers in economy with a hybrid 3-3-3 or 3-4-3 configuration. The seats are narrower — 16.9 to 17.4 inches wide — though the pitch is unchanged at 31 to 32 inches.

Seats 17D/E/F, 19D, 27A/B/C/H/J/K, and 29D are the best picks, thanks to the extra legroom at each.

We recommend avoiding seats near the lavatories , including the red-colored ones illustrated above.

Qatar Airways 777-300ER Economy Class

Qatar Airways’ 777-300ER economy cabin has a 3-3-3 or 3-4-3 seating arrangement, with each seat being 17 inches wide and offering 31 to 32 inches of pitch.

The enormous plane has a whopping 312 economy seats. However, there are quite a few seats we prefer, as outlined in the seat map below:

Rows 16 and 35 have excellent legroom, as does Row 23 (excluding A and K seats, which have to deal with the exit door protrusion).

Seats in rows 34 and 45 have limited recline , which is something to avoid for long-haul travel. They’re also close to the galleys and lavatories — yet another reason to avoid them.

Qatar Airways A350-1000 Economy Class

The last product we’ll discuss is the A350-1000 economy cabin, which has 281 seats in a 3-3-3 layout.

Each seat is 16.9 to 17.4 inches wide and offers 31 to 32 inches of pitch.

The best seats for solo travelers are 31A or 31K , which don’t have seats in front of them.

Couples traveling together may wish to choose 30A/C, 30H/K, 16A/B, or 16H/K, as these have extra legroom and occupy their own little area. We  recommend avoiding rows 29, 47, and 48 . The impetus for this is that rows 29, 47, and 48 have restricted recline space and are right next to the galleys and lavatories.

Qatar Airways flies nonstop to plenty of U.S. airports, including all of the international gateways you’d expect, like Chicago (ORD), Los Angeles (LAX), and New York (JFK).

Better yet, Qsuites is available on most routes and should be on more routes as Qatar continues to outfit its aircraft. Qatar occasionally has aircraft swaps, which can be disappointing if you want to fly Qsuites.

If you’re booking any Qsuite ticket, you’re in great shape. However, if we had to pick one aircraft to fly Qsuites, it’d be the Airbus A350-1000 . The cabin construction helps regulate the onboard climate, which can go a long way in terms of comfort and fighting jet lag.

Qatar features 2 different variations on their A350-900 aircraft. Both feature business class in a 1-2-1 configuration. However, one variation features Qsuites and the other has a layout with reverse-herringbone seats. We prefer the Qsuites product.

If you’re flying in coach, our favorite seats are on the A350-900s without Qsuites, thanks to their greater width compared to the other aircraft in Qatar’s fleet.

Qatar is located in the Persian Gulf and can be easily reached by Qatar Airways. Doha is well-connected by air to all major cities in the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

Qatar is the wealthiest country in the world – thanks to oil production – and the wealth is imminent in excellent infrastructure.

There are many things to see and do in Doha.

While most of them are concentrated in and around the Qatar capital of Doha, you can also find attractions in the desert and around the Zekreet peninsula.

In spite of that, Qatar is a small country and you can easily see it in 3 to 5 days. Here are our recommendations for planning your trip to Doha, Qatar with our detailed Qatar itinerary.

Qatar Travel FAQs

Is qatar safe to visit.

Qatar is extremely safe to visit. It has a very low level of crime and violence and is, in fact, the 16th safest country in the world. It is quite safe for everybody including families, couples, solo men and women, as well as business travelers.

Qatar is also politically stable. Visitors should follow the usual travel precautions of respecting local customs, not bringing alcohol or pork products, not wandering alone at night, and being aware of their surroundings.

Located in the Middle East, Qatar is an Islamic country and follows Sharia laws. Qatar is also conservative.

Visitors must obey local laws and customs: alcohol is prohibited except in certain 5-star expat hotels and bars where it is served at very expensive rates.

Being drunk in public is a legal offense, for which you can be jailed. Men and women both should both dress conservatively but women are not required to cover their head.

Visitors should not criticize the ruling family or the emir and keep conversations limited to non-controversial subjects.

When is the best time to visit Qatar?

Qatar is located in the Middle East. Most of the country is a dry and arid desert. As a result, it gets very hot during the summer. From June to September, it is the low season.

The average temperature is above 40 C or 100 F. There is minimal rainfall during summer. If you do visit during the summer, we recommend drinking lots of water and not spending a lot of time outdoors at noon to avoid the extreme heat.

April to May in spring and October to November in fall is a great time to visit because of mild heat during the day and cool winds at night.

The best time to visit is however from December to March when day time temperature is pleasant.

It can, however, get pretty cold at night in the desert and we recommend dressing in layers and wearing a jacket or sweater for night time outdoor activities like the dhow cruise or camping in the desert.

Where to stay in Qatar?

We recommend basing yourself in Doha for the duration of your stay in Qatar.

You can easily see the attractions located outside of Doha via day trips by renting or hiring a car with a driver.

The best place to stay in Doha is easily inside the Souq waqif boutique hotels.

The Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels is a collection of 9 designer properties located inside the Souq. Each of these hotels has a variety of amenities and guests at one can avail of the amenities at other hotels as well.

But the best thing about Souq Waqif hotels is their location: you have the souqs shops, restaurants, and vibrant atmosphere at your doorstep.

Another option is to stay in close vicinity to Souq Waqif. There are a number of hotels in the area from where you can walk to the Souq and have a budget-friendly stay.

Alternatively, you can also stay along the Corniche where many of the international hotel brands are located.

Epic Qatar Itinerary for families, couples, and solo travelers

Day 1: museum of islamic arts, katara cultural village, souq waqif.

Start your day by seeing the highlights of Doha. Visit the famous Museum of Islamic Arts and see the Katara Cultural Village. End the day by shopping and dining in Qatar’s famed Souq Waqif.

Museum of Islamic Arts

The Museum of Islamic Arts (MIA) is one of Doha’s top tourist attractions. Designed by the renowned architect I M Pei of Louvre pyramid fame, the museum building is a beautiful work of art.

The museum is built on its own reclaimed piece of land on the Doha Bay and visitors have a beautiful view of the Doha skyline from the museum campus.

The museum is a modern take on the Islamic mosque style of architecture around the world and blends in the ancient Qatari style prominently seen in Souqs and elsewhere in the city.

The building’s upper air vents are designed to resemble a veiled Qatari woman.

The collection of Islamic Arts inside the museum is vast, diverse, and stunning. Museum has exhibits from all over the world including Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.

You will find paintings, Islamic calligraphy, ancient Qurans, jewelry, ceramics, magnetic compasses, globes, jewelry, textiles, and a variety of everyday objects from ancient times.

These articles were created under Islamic rulers and show intricate Islamic patterns and motifs.

Also well represented are architectural elements including doors, windows, tiles, columns, wall panels, etc that are constructed and decorated in the Islamic style of architecture.

The museum interior is also spectacular with 5 storied grand windows that offer a memorable view of the Doha skyline across the water – my favorite view in all of Qatar!

We recommend dining in the museum café to take in this view. We ate delicious date cheesecake at the cafe and did not feel like leaving.

The museum garden and the outside courtyard of the building are also worth exploring. You should ideally keep aside at least 2 to 3 hours to explore the museum and its surroundings. Entrance to MIA is free and it is closed on Friday.

Katara Cultural Village

Katara Village is located between the West Bay skyline and the Pearl. Katara was the ancient name of Qatar and the complex is named after that.

The building design and architecture in Katara reflects Qatar’s heritage. The area is open 24/7 and holds many events including the Doha Film Festival.

We recommend walking in Katara and admiring the architecture, especially the Katara mosque, viewing art galleries, and spending time on the beach.

You can also see many local artists, check out the amphitheater, and the maritime museum. Katara also has many fine-dining restaurants including Middle Eastern, Indian, Italian, and many more.

Souq Waqif is located across the MIA. The name Souq Waqif literally means a standing market. This is an ancient Qatari market that has been recently restored and has become Doha’s premier tourist attraction.

Inside you will find police patrolling on horses and porters carrying purchases on wheelbarrows – it’s like walking back in time. The market has narrow alleys and shops selling a variety of goods from souvenirs, antiques, perfumes, spices, and household goods.

The Souq is an excellent place to shop. We spent a lot of time in Souq Waqif during our time in Qatar and loved exploring the market. To know more about the market, read our post on 22 Epic things to do in Souq Waqif .

The main thoroughfare of Souq Waqif is full of restaurants – this is a great area to dine in Qatar. You will find restaurants for all budgets and cuisines – Qatari, Syrian, Lebanese, Moroccan, Iraqi, and even Italian.

You can buy fava beans, chestnuts, and pasta from food carts and eat Turkish style ice cream. This main street also has money changers and souvenir shops. You can people-watch here for hours and be happy.

However, we also recommend exploring beyond Main Street and in the alleys where the locals shop. There you will find household goods, apparel, and even a gold souq.

The Souq also has a camel pen and horse stables – our son loved seeing the animals. The Souq also has a separate area known as the Pet Souq where you can find all sorts of pet animals including birds, rabbits, tortoises, and aquatic animals.

The Falcon Souq located next to Souq Waqif is dedicated to selling falcons and falconry supplies. This is a great place to understand the Qatari tradition of falconry. If visiting the Falcon Souq, read our article on everything you need to know about the falcon souq .

Here’s a tip: many of the porters, salesmen, taxi drivers, and other workers in Souq Waqif are from the Indian subcontinent and especially India – if you know Hindi (one of the Indian languages) – you can have a much better conversation with them in Hindi than English.

We got better deals when bargaining in Souq Waqif simply because we spoke the language and were able to pet the Arabian horses in the stables near the Falcon Souq.

Day 2: Sheikh Faisal Al Thani Museum, Doha Corniche, Dhow cruise

Visit the unique Sheikh Faisal Al Thani museum and see the camel races at the nearby Al-Shahaniya racetrack. End the day by walking along the Corniche, exploring West Bay skyline and taking a dhow cruise.

Sheikh Faisal Al Thani museum

This privately owned museum was opened by Sheikh Faisal Al Thani and showcases his private collection.

The museum is built in an ancient Qatari fort and has exhibits ranging from Islamic artwork, textiles, manuscripts, coins from various time periods, vintage cars, bikes, pearling equipment, wooden dhows, and other artifacts.

You will also find an entire Syrian house inside the museum. The Sheikh collected the items over 50 years.

The museum also has plans for a separate car museum and carpet exhibit area in the future.

The car collection will have over 600 vintage and classic cars, motorbikes,  guns, artillery, and more while the carpet collection will feature hand-woven rugs with Islamic motifs.

You can visit the museum on your own or request a special guided tour with an English-speaking guide. We recommend spending about 2 hours viewing the collection.

The museum is located about an hour out of Doha, so we suggest either driving there or keeping your taxi waiting while you see the collection, as it’s hard to find a return taxi.

Al Shahaniya Racetrack

Watching the camel races at Al Shahaniya Racetrack is one of the most unique things to do while in Qatar. The Al Shahaniya Racetrack is located near the Al Thani museums and you can do both in one morning.

The best time to visit the racetrack for a chance to see the camel races is on Friday during the winter months (November – February), when there are national and international tournaments being held. Races are also often held every day during the season.

Camel racing is one of the most expensive sports in the world and also the most unique. Camels are usually handled by robot jockeys. It is fascinating to see the camels and their kid-sized jockeys at work.

The robotic jockeys are remote-controlled; their operators drive cars around the track and control operations as needed.

Watching the races is a free and fun activity. If you can’t visit during the race season, then try visiting in the morning around 9 am when the camels are exercised every day.

The Corniche

The Doha Corniche is the city’s waterfront promenade along the Doha Bay. It begins at the Museum of Islamic Arts and continues for over seven kilometers.

Along the promenade, you will find beautifully landscaped walking paths, sculptures and monuments, and public gardens. At the other end, you will find the iconic Sheraton hotel with its pyramid shape.

From the Corniche, you can see excellent views of the Doha West Bay business district skyline – this is one of the best places to photograph the Doha skyline.

Many of Doha’s premier landmarks are located along the Corniche. The Corniche is connected by an underground walkway to Souq Waqif.

Some of the popular sculptures along the Corniche include the Pearl Monument (devoted to Qatar’s pearling history), murals, Richard Serra’s 7 sculptures near the MIA, and Orry – the mascot of the Asian Games in 2006.

This is a great place to people watch; you will be able to see Qatari families having picnics and playing with their children along the Corniche. We recommend walking along the Corniche at sunset and enjoying the spectacular views.

If you walk towards the far end of the Corniche, near the West Bay skyline, you will be able to see the beautiful teapot sculpture. We loved this intricate marble sculpture and had a nice picnic beneath its shade.

Dhow Cruise

End your day with a dhow cruise on the Doha Bay. Many traditional wooden dhows line up along the promenade near the Museum of Islamic Arts end of the Corniche.

The boats can take you on a sail around the bay and you can see Doha city from the water. The views of the skyline from the water are beautiful and the wooden dhow cruise is a very romantic experience.

The sunset cruise is one of the best – Doha’s skyscrapers are ablaze with the glow of the setting sun and the wooden dhow boats have their twinkling lights on while some others also have music to compliment the atmosphere.

You can also opt for a dinner cruise aboard the dhow boat.

Day 3: Al Thakira Mangroves, Barzan Towers, Villagio Mall, Aspire Park

Al Thakira mangroves

If you thought Qatar was all about the desert, you are in for a surprise. Al Thakira mangroves located north of Al Khor is a vast expanse of greenery.

At Al Thakira, you will find lots of migrating birds including flamingos, herons, fish, crabs, and more. Al Thakira has lush green mangrove forests and is an excellent respite from the starkness of the desert.

The best way to explore the mangroves and wildlife at Al Thakira is via a guided kayak tour.

The kayaking trips are usually about an hour to 90 mins long and experienced guides will guide you through the mangrove forests. Many tour operators can organize this half-day kayak excursion for you.

Barzan Towers

An off-the-beaten-path destination in Qatar, you won’t find many other tourists near the Barzan Towers. The Barzan Towers are historic watchtowers in Qatar’s northern desert.

Built in the late 19th century, these served the dual purposes of keeping watch over the enemy in the desert and observing the night sky. The towers are architecturally minimalist and striking and blend in the desert environment.

The buildings have been restored in 2003 and are in great condition. Inside the tower complex, you will find a small mosque and visitor center but apart from that, there is not much to see.

The towers make for striking photographs and are a great way to spend a few hours in the desert. The Umm Salal Fort is also located close to the watchtowers but is closed to visitors.

Villagio Mall

After your trip to the mangroves and the desert watchtowers, spend the rest of your day in the Aspire Zone.

Villagio Mall located in the Aspire Zone has over 200 branded stores and is a great place to shop, dine, and people-watch. Apart from shopping, the Villagio Mall is most famous for its Italian inspiration and indoor canals with gondolas, reminiscent of Venice.

With its lit up blue sky ceiling interior, it reminded us of Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. Inside the Villagio Mall, you will also find other attractions including the food court, ice hockey rink, indoor playground, cinema, and bowling alleys.

Aspire Park and Aspire Tower

After spending time at the Villagio Mall, visit the famous Aspire Tower and Aspire Park. The Aspire Tower is also known as the Torch, Doha and is one of the most photographed buildings in the city for its spiral architecture.

The Aspire Tower is currently the tallest building in Doha and looks exceptionally beautiful when lit up at night.

Aspire Park located next to the Aspire Tower in the Aspire Zone is Doha’s largest urban park. This is a great place to take an evening stroll, have picnics, play games with the children, and fly kites.

The park has fountains, playground area, cafe, and a lake as well as many unique trees and vegetation including the exotic baobab trees imported from Argentina.

Day 4: Desert safari at Al Khor Udeid

For an unparalleled desert experience, venture out into the desert at Al Khor Udeid and enjoy a day full of dune bashing, desert safari, camel rides, swimming in the inland sea, and relaxing by the beach.

Al Khor Udeid is the most popular day trip from Doha and you can find a variety of tours to satisfy you. There are half and full-day safaris: the half-day safaris do not include lunch while the full-day safaris include traditional Bedouin lunch in the desert.

You can also opt for a tour that includes night camping in a Bedouin tent and enjoy the stillness of the desert at night. There are also sunset desert safaris – these are especially popular with couples. Here are the highlights of these tours:

4 by 4 vehicle Safari and sandboarding

The 4 X $ desert safari and dune bashing ride is the highlight of the trip for most people. Tour operators will take you up and down the desert sand dunes at high speeds, resulting in an adventurous ride.

Visitors also can sandboard down the dunes for a thrilling activity. Sandboarding is quite popular with kids and teens. The tour companies will provide the sand boards for free.

Camel ride, falcon handling, and photographing the desert

You can also opt for an additional camel ride and experience the desert life in a traditional way. The camel ride is quite bumpy and enjoyed by children.

Sitting astride a camel as it gets up is an equally fun and scary experience – totally memorable!

During the day, you will also be able to handle a falcon under the supervision of the tour operator and take a photo with a falcon on your hand. Throughout the day, you will have innumerable opportunities to photograph the desert landscape.

Swimming in the inland sea

You can also spend time on the beach and relax in the inland sea. The Inland Sea is located at the border with Saudi Arabia and is a beautiful natural wonder in Qatar.

Here the desert meets the Arabian Gulf creating a panoramic and scenic landscape. At high tide, the sea is created among the dunes and is an amazing experience.

Camping in the desert

Day visits and night stays will be often accompanied by BBQ buffet lunch or dinners, shisha, and resting in the Bedouin tent. The desert is beautiful at night and tranquil.

You can rest by a bonfire and may even have the opportunity to enjoy Arabian music under the stars – depending on your tour operator.

Overall, we highly recommend the desert safari to have a memorable time in the desert.

Day 5: Zekreet Peninsula, East-West sculpture, Al-Zubarah Fort

Drive out into the desert near the Zekreet peninsula and see the East-West / West-East sculpture by artist Richard Serra. Stop at the Film City ghost town and admire the abandoned buildings. Visit Qatar’s only UNESCO Site of Al-Zubarah Fort. End your day by relaxing at the Pearl.

Zekreet Peninsula

Zekreet peninsula located in western Qatar is another exciting day trip from Doha. It is just an hour away from the city.

Zekreet peninsula has unique geographical landforms including the half moon shaped bay of Zekreet, unspoiled beaches, mushroom rocks, and limestone escarpments.

The Zekreet peninsula also has lots of wildlife including ostrich, wild deer, gazelles, flamingos, the Arabian oryx which is Qatar’s national animal.

Zekreet is also a popular destination for camping. Here are some of the most popular things to do in Zekreet peninsula.

East West / West East sculpture

Apart from the sculpture ‘Seven’ near the Museum of Islamic Arts in Doha, American sculptor Richard Sierra has another modern art installation in the Zekreet peninsula of Qatar.

The East-West / West-East sculpture consists of 4 steel plates rising out of the sand and dominating the sky. The steel plates are between 48 ft and 55 ft high and are level at the top.

Visitors can touch the plates and marvel at this unique artwork. The highway doesn’t reach the sculpture and you will need to off-road over the sand to visit. Hence, we recommend visiting with a tour guide.

Film City ghost town

The Film City ghost town is an abandoned city that was built for a movie set and now lies empty and unused.

The fortified city has towers and gates but is completely uninhabited; it is one of the most unusual sights in the middle of the desert.

You can enter the Film City, take photos, and talk with the guards before making your way around the peninsula.  

Natural Wildlife Reserve

The Al Reem Biosphere Reserve is located in the Zekreet peninsula.

This is a UNESCO protected area has plenty of unique desert flora and fauna including the endangered oryx, gazelle, osprey, flamingos, and more.

Wildlife sightings are unfortunately not that common but if you are lucky, you may spot an oryx.

Al-Zubarah Fort and Archeological Site

The Al-Zubarah fort and ruins of the nearby walled town of Al Zubarah are Qatar’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located by the shore in Northwest Qatar, the coastal town was a flourishing pearling village and important trade center on the Persian Gulf in the 18th century.

Al Zubarah traded goods with Asian subcontinent and the Middle East through routes in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf before it was destroyed and abandoned in the 19th century.

At the archeological site of Al Zubarah, you can see the preserved remains of houses, streets, mosque, fortified walls, and the harbor. The site is currently closed to the public since excavation is taking place.

The Al Zubarah fort overlooks the town but was built much later in 1938. It is fascinating to visit the fort and the village and understand Qatar’s importance in pearl trading.

Inside the fort, you will find a museum with archeological artifacts, maps, and other historical exhibits about the area’s history.

Al Zubarah is an hour away from Doha and you will need a car or tour to visit. We recommend renting a car or hiring car + driver for the entire day and visit Zekreet and Al Zubarah together.

If you don’t wish to spend the entire day in the desert, then consider a luxurious day trip to the Pearl. You can also visit Pearl in the evening after checking out Zekreet and Al Zubarah during the day.

The Pearl Qatar is an artificial island with office and commercial space, lavish seaside villas, luxurious hotels, residential communities, and apartment buildings, upscale shopping, fine restaurants serving international cuisines, cafes, and bakeries.

Pearl is the ultimate urban oasis and makes you forget that you are in the Middle East.  This area is extremely popular with ex-pats, tourists, and locals alike.

We recommend visiting the Pearl and walking along the seaside as well as inside the Pearl. Do some window shopping and dine in one of the cafes or restaurants. Visit areas such as Little Venice (designed like Italy) and just people watch.

Day 6: Souvenir shopping in Souq Waqif and relaxing spa massage in Doha

On your final day in Qatar, we recommend visiting Souq Waqif again to buy souvenirs, eat some more of Qatari cuisine, and catch up with the activities that you might have missed on an earlier visit.

Some of the best souvenirs to buy in Qatar include the Arabian tea and coffee pots, entire tea sets with cups and saucers, shishas, apparel including bejeweled dresses for women, shawls, and capes, oud perfumes, dry fruits including dates, baklavas, and other sweets.

You can also opt for traditional magnets, postcards, and other souvenirs.

In the afternoon, we recommend getting a luxurious spa massage in Doha.

Did you know, Doha has some of the best spa resorts in the world? Most of these resorts also accommodate day guests and you can even avail most of the resort amenities on a half-day or full-day trip.

I had no idea that Hindi was spoken so widely in Qatar! Sadly I don’t speak hindi or Arabic, so no horse-petting for me 🙁 I love markets though, I think I’d be happy just wandering around!

Wow! There is so much to see and do! Did you know that in this country, they toast with water for weddings? I learned about this years ago because I’m obsessed with weddings and I don’t drink alchohol so I thought this was the coolest ever and would love to visit!

I love that the government is making such a concerted effort to preserve Bedouin heritage throughout Qatar – sounds like a really authentic destination – reminds me a lot of neighboring Dubai but without the mass tourism and western influence. The Museum of Islamic Art sounds really interesting – such a beautiful building too – I adore that staircase!!

I’ve never really thought about going to Qatar, but I have been to Oman and U.A.E. The souqs are one of my favourite parts of those countries. Thanks for the detailed itinerary.

Excellent artical , do you have to book hotels and tours through Qatar Airways for transit visa ? Otherwise do you require a local sponsor for visa ? The information on there website is confusing ( for Indian citizens )

Sachin, if you are traveling via Qatar Airways and have a stopover in Doha then you receive the visa free of cost. You just need a ticket into Qatar and an onward flight ticket, both tickets have to be on Qatar Airways. You also need to provide a copy of passports. The entire application can be completed online at Qatar Airways website. You can book hotels/cars/tours on your own. The visa won’t apply if you have a India-Qatar round trip ticket. It is an excellent stopover if traveling from US-India.

Looking for the best things to do in Doha, Qatar ? You’ve come to the right place! I’ve visited Doha twice and spent three weeks traveling there and I’m excited to share my favorite things to do in Qatar.

Before I jump right in and start rambling about what to do in Qatar, I thought I’d offer a little introduction to the country. While soccer fans know it as the host for the 2022 World Cup and frequent travelers are familiar with its impressive airport, there’s so much more to Qatar than meets the eye. Despite its small size (4,486 mi²), it’s actually the richest country in the world. And with 2.5 million people (but only half a million Qataris), it’s a multicultural destination that exceeds expectations at every turn.

While its small size means you have zoom in on Google Maps to see it, it also signifies that you can see a fair amount of the country in a short period of time. I’ve written an extensive guide to the best things to do in Qatar to help you make the best of your time there: whether it’s for a long layover, a few days, or two weeks.

The Best Things to do in Doha, Qatar

Doha souqs and cultural centers .

One of the best ways to get a pulse on Qatari culture is by visiting the local markets and cultural centers. I’ve included all of these places in the below section – they’re easily some of the top places to see in Doha!

If you ask anyone what to do in Doha, Souq Waqif is likely to the first suggestion. Easily my favorite spot in Doha, the Souq Waqif pays homage to the traditional marketplaces of the country from the pearl-diving days . Despite being renovated in 2006 after a fire, it still retains authentic Qatari architecture and is the best place to shop for souvenirs. You could easily spend hours and hours exploring the Souq – luckily, it doesn’t close until 10 pm. While I recommend wandering around and taking in all the sights and smells, be sure not to miss any of the main attractions listed below. Grab a map from the Souq Waqif Information & Tourism Center and go!

• The Falcon Souq: Falconry is a traditional Qatari sport still practiced today, and these majestic birds retail for thousands of dollars. In the falcon area of the market, be sure to visit the shop dedicated to selling all things related to the birds (including falcons themselves). You can even get a photo of yourself holding one. If you’re even more curious, stop by the nearby Falcon Hospital and check out the falcon waiting room and pharmacy. It’s fascinating and definitely one of the top Qatar attractions!
• The Gold Souq: Ornate jewelry, anyone? The section of the souq dedicated to gold is almost as beautiful as the gold itself. Here you’ll find a wide variety of stunning pieces, although you’ll likely be more tempted to just window shop in this area.
• The Bird Souq: Falcons aren’t the only bird species that Qataris purchase. You’ll hear the bird souq before you see it, thanks to the incredible and slightly overwhelming number of species available for sale.
• The Horse Stables: For a bit of calm away from the chaos of the central souq, head over to The Horse Stables and bid your salams to the horses used by the souq’s heritage police (aka security). Don’t worry though, visitors are encouraged.
• The Camel Pen: If you haven’t quite gotten your fill of animals, scope out the camel pen to watch the camels enjoy their evening meal.
• Local Art: The Souq Waqif Art Center showcases works by both local and international artists. You’ll find everything from Islamic Calligraphy to photography to paintings.
• The Shops: If you’re looking to purchase souvenirs from Qatar, Souq Waqif is the place to do it! You’ll find a large collection of your typical souvenirs like magnets and trinkets, but you can also purchase traditional Qatari goods. Qatar is known for Oud, a strong incense sold in both perfume and wood form that is a favorite amongst locals. Spices are also a popular gift, along with clothing, dates, and more.
• The Food: Souq Waqif is home to an impressively large collection of restaurants, both Qatari and otherwise. Whether you’re here for a snack, a meal, or a coffee stop, there are plenty of drinks and bites to satisfy your craving. If you’re looking to try some local dishes, stop by either Al Jasra Traditional Food or Shay al Shomoos for a taste of balaleet (sweetened noodles topped with egg) or makboos (spiced rice topped with protein). If international cuisine is what you’re after, don’t miss the heavenly Iranian eats found at Parisa, the Persian restaurant that is as sparkly as it is delicious.

Al Wakrah Souq

Al Wakrah is a small but charming souq located on the Arabian Gulf about half an hour south of West Bay. There aren’t many places in Doha where you can walk around and enjoy the breeze, but at Al Wakrah you can. It also has some restaurants, shops, and cafes. Admittedly, the souq is not a top Qatar tourist attraction since it’s on the emptier side in terms of shop occupants and customers but it is a nice place for a meal and a stroll.

The Pearl is a man-made island off the coast of the West Bay. It’s what I would call a “residential destination,” complete with great restaurants, luxury shops, a couple of hotels, and even canals where you can take boat rides and stand up paddle board. One of the reasons it was built was to fuel foreign real estate investment in Qatar; it’s the only place non-Qataris are allowed to purchase land. It’s essentially an Arabian Rivera – not totally my style but should still be on your list of places to visit in Doha.

Katara Village

Katara Village is Doha’s culture and recreation center, home to art galleries, theaters, performance venues, and more. A lot of creative workshops and events take place here but it’s also an attractive tourist spot as well. Here you’ll find a beautiful promenade, plenty of good restaurants, well-designed buildings and a public beach. I’m personally a fan of the galleries and architecture here and consider it one of the things to see in Doha. Be sure to check to see if there are any cultural shows going on while you’re in town.

Doha’s Top Museums and Galleries

There are plenty of amazing museums to visit in Doha, each more amazing than the last. These are a few of the best ones I visited, but there are always more to be seen. Also, note that there’s actually a  free shuttle bus (called “Mathaf Bus”) that runs between the following museums: Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, the Qatar National Library, Fire Station, the Museum of Islamic Art and the Qatar National Museum.

National Museum of Qatar

Opened in 2019, the National Museum of Qatar is an immersive audio-visual experience showcasing the history of Qatar in a unique way. The architecture is beautiful, designed by French architect Jean Nouvel to mimic a desert rose. Inside, you’ll find everything from ancient artifacts to documentary materials to interactive displays. It’s quite the unique experience and well-worth the visit. Admission fee is QR 50.

Msheireb Museums

Although you would never guess by the way the country looks now, Qatar was once a desolate desert with an economy fueled by pearl fishing. I learned this and much more at the Msheireb Museums , located in Doha’s old cultural capital. This collection of museums, comprising of four different buildings, showcase not just the history of Qatar and Doha, but also family and cultural life and architectural innovation and development. However, my favorite building is Bin Jelmood House, focused entirely on the historical and modern day slave trade. The museum doesn’t shy away from addressing the role various countries (including Qatar) have played and continue to play in both historical and modern slavery. This topic is so easily glossed over in the United States and I really appreciate how Qatar addresses it directly. This is by far one of the best history and cultural museums I’ve been to worldwide and is truly one of the best things to do in Qatar. Admission is free.

Museum of Islamic Art (MIA)

Located on the Doha Corniche, the Museum of Islamic Art is home to the largest collection of Islamic art in the world. Designed by IM Pei (the architect behind The Louvre), the museum has seriously impressive and beautiful art pieces from three continents: everything from pottery to jewelry to weapons. Even the building itself is a postmodern work of art, with the top curved windows shaped like a pair of eyes, fondly known as “the eyes of Doha.” Gorgeous plazas flank either side of the museum, boasting some spectacular views of the Doha skyline. And of course, just outside, the MIA Park has plenty of green space for relaxing and people watching, plus a café to boot. If you’re hungry, grab lunch inside at IDAM , Alain Ducasse’s first restaurant in the Middle East. Have I sold you on this place yet? Oh yeah – admission is free here too.

Doha Fire Station Art Gallery 

Not only are the contents of this contemporary art gallery  fascinating, so is the building itself. Operating as a fire station until 2012 (hence, the name), it was then gifted to the father Emir, who wanted a space for cultural expression. Thus, Fire Station was born, starting as a standalone gallery and later expanding to include an artist-in-residence program. While I was there, they were hosting an amazing exhibit about the plight of refugees (“Laundromat” by Chinese artist Ai Wei Wei). Attached to the Fire Station is Café 999 , a peaceful place to work, grab a drink or some food, or people watch. Be sure to check online to see if you’d be interested in the current exhibition. Qatar National Library

I have this thing with libraries and bookstores. When I was little, I used to always tell people I would buy a bookstore if I were a millionaire. So when I found out that Doha has a beautiful library , I knew I had to visit. If you’re anything like me, this library will feel like a playground. Not only is it absolutely stunning, but it also has a plethora of amazing resources : a heritage library with historical written collections, a 3D printer, a quiet study corner, a café, and more. It has everything you would ever need in a work / study space and is easily one of my favorite spots in the city.  Note: Although I wouldn’t classify this library as a museum per say , it’s in this section because it’s part of the free museum shuttle route and it does have a few artifact displays. 

Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Musuem (FBQ Musuem)

This impressive museum is actually a somewhat eclectic personal collection of items belonging to Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani, an influential Qatari businessman. The museum is separated into four sections: Qatar heritage, Islamic art, coins and currency, and vehicles. The items are all impressive and fascinating, but the true highlight here is the Sheikh’s vintage car collection with over 600 working vintage vehicles. It’s a car lover’s dream! This museum has a collection for anyone and everyone so come and see it for yourself. Entrance fee is QR 30.

Unique Outdoor Activities in Doha

Dhow cruise.

After a bustling day exploring the city, one of the best things to do in Doha is to relax with a sunset cruise around the waterfront in a dhow, a traditional wooden boat. You’ll get spectacular views of the Doha skyline, the Museum of Islamic Arts, The Pearl, and more. You’ll have the option of doing a one-hour cruise or a three-one, which includes dinner. Book it ahead of time here .

Camel Races at Al Shahaniya

Every Friday from November to February, you can watch camel races at the Al-Shahaniya Race Track , located an hour north of Doha. Even if there are no races, visitors can view practice sessions at 9:30 am or 5:30 pm. And because this is The Middle East, this is where you can find the most expensive camels in the world. Definitely an activity that’s unique to Qatar! Note: Qatar now uses remote-controlled robots to ride camels during races rather than human jockeys because of safety. I have not found any research indicating that camel racing is cruel. However, if you are reading this and are knowledgeable about the ethics of camel racing, please share your insights.

Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club

If you’re in Doha on a Wednesday or Thursday between November and April, don’t miss attending a race at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club . It’s one of the best horse training centers in the world, and admission to the races is free. I’d never been to a horse race prior to this and was fortunate to get a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility. Not only is the venue gorgeous, but the horses are incredibly well taken care of as well. Plus, the racing atmosphere is thrilling, even if you’re a dummy like me and don’t actually understand how to read the program.

Aspire Park

Aspire Park is Doha’s largest park and located 20-30 minutes outside of West Bay. It’s a beautiful green area with a lake, animals, running paths, cafes and more. They also have a ton of amazing street art and these cool trees that look like they’re pregnant . While Aspire Park isn’t one of the top ten things to do in Doha or anything, it’s definitely the best green area to spend the day outside if you have time to spare.

Oxygen Park

I was honestly surprised to find so many green spaces in Doha, especially considering that it’s a large city in the middle of the desert. Oxygen Park is one such space, designed to encourage people to get out and play , so to speak. One of the coolest parts is the design, with cooling tunnel segments for those running in the desert heat, recreation areas for rest and observation, and a small hill with views of Education City. Walk along the Corniche

Doha has an iconic skyline and what better way to see it than by walking along the Corniche in West Bay? Unless you’re visiting during the winter months, this is an activity best saved for the evening or early morning. I recommend coming at sunset for amazing lighting . Be sure not to miss the West-Mound Skyline Viewpoint for excellent views as well.

Beautiful Doha Mosques Well-Worth the Visit

Don’t miss a visit to the impressive Imam Abdul Wahaab Shaikh Mosque , one of the largest mosques in the country and one of the must see places in Qatar. The architecture and design here is truly a work of art – understated with spectacular attention to detail. It is open to non-Muslims as long as it isn’t prayer time. Women are helped into abayas at the women’s entrance and men are expected to show up dressed appropriately (covering knees and shoulders). It has over 90 domes and can accommodate 30,000 people, so prepare to be impressed.

Mosque at Education City

This is by far the most unique mosque I’ve ever set eyes on (and as a Muslim, I’ve been to a lot of mosques). The design is ultra-modern , set on five pillars to represent the five pillars of Islam #symbolism. Inside, the white and pristine staircase leads up to the women’s section overlooking the men’s prayer area. There are also little skylights and windows to let natural light in. Every piece of this mosque’s design is exquisite. Definitely make a point to stop in, even it’s just for a quick peek.

Other Cool Things to Do in Doha

Run by the Qatar Foundation, Al Shaqab is a state-of-the-art horse facility where Arabian show horses are trained and bred. Visitors can go behind the scenes for a tour of the facility to gain an understanding of the history and horses. As someone who knows nothing about this world, it was really interesting to see how much care and effort goes into raising horses – they even have their own spa and treadmill! Note: If you’re interested in doing a tour at Al Shaqab, you have to book it ahead of time by filling out the form on their website.

Villaggio Mall

Although I’m not a huge mall person, even I’ll admit that it’s worth adding the Villaggio to your “places to visit in Qatar” list. The mall is, in a word, epic, with pretty much any and every international store you can imagine. That’s not all, though. The i nside architectures and decor is inspired by Venice , complete with rideable gondolas, colorful storefront facades, and painted ceilings. The attention to detail is truly spectacular. I know it’s strange that a mall is a Qatar attraction but this one is pretty cool.

Dine at “The Torch” in Aspire Park

The Aspire Tower, fondly known as “The Torch” is the tallest building in Qatar that doubles as a hotel. I wouldn’t recommend staying here as it’s a bit far from Central Doha but you should definitely visit for some epic panoramic views of the city. Here you’ll find Three Sixty , the only revolving restaurant in Doha but there are quite a few dining options depending on your mood and budget. I had lunch at Flying Carpet and found the food to be a bit underwhelming but overall enjoyed the visit and the incredible views. Bonus – it’s connected to the above-mentioned Villaggio Mall , so it’s easy to visit both in one go.

Go on a food tour at Souq Waqif

If you’re looking for one of the best things to do in Qatar for foodies, this is it! Sample a mix of Qatari and international cuisine at the Souq Waqif on this three-hour food and cultural tour ! Not only will you get a chance to thoroughly explore the Souq through a foodie lens but you’ll also be treated to a visit to the Msheireb Museums, which are low-key some of my favorite museums in Doha. You’ll also get a behind-the-scenes-look of the Falcon Souq, which is a highlight of the Souq Waqif. You’re guaranteed to leave this tour full of both food and cultural knowledge! Book it here .

Barzan Towers

If you happen to have free time and a car handy, check out the Barzan Tower in the suburbs of Doha. The towers served as a l ookout point for ships and local pearl divers back in the early 1900s . Since restoration in 2003, they’re now equipped with air conditioning – fancy! Nowadays, it serves as a cool viewpoint as well as the lunar observation spot to determine the start of Ramadan. I wouldn’t say it’s one of the top things to do in Doha or anything but it’s worth a visit if you have the time.

The Best Day Trips from Doha: Things to Do Outside Doha

Fun fact: some of the best things to do in Doha are actually outside Doha, but luckily the country is small enough that nothing is more than a few hours away by car. If you’re short on time and can only do one day trip, I highly recommend a desert excursion – it’s an unforgettable Qatar experience.

Khor Al Adaid (Inland Sea), Dune Bashing and Camel Rides

The Inland Sea is truly one of the best places to visit in Qatar, especially if you’re looking to get out of the city for a bit. Unless you’re renting a 4×4, you actually can’t visit the desert independently. Therefore, I recommend booking a half-day , full-day , or overnight tour for a desert adventure.

After an hour or so drive, you’ll arrive at the entrance to the desert, where you can do an optional camel ride while your driver removes air from the car tires in preparation for dune bashing. Dune bashing is exactly the exhilarating adventure it sounds like – sliding down desert dunes sideways in a car. It takes anywhere from 30 – 45 minutes to arrive at Khor Al Adaid, the sea where Qatar meets Saudi Arabia (you can actually see Saudi from the shoreline). It’s also a beautiful place to dip your toes in or swim, if you so choose. Depending on your choice of tour, you will either return to Doha after a stop for some refreshments or continue on to lunch.

Regency Sealine Camp 

If you’d like to get out of Doha a night for a taste of desert glamping, then Regency Sealine Camp is for you. While the above-mentioned overnight tour takes place at a typical Bedouin camp, Regency Sealine is for those who want both the beach resort and camping experience rolled into one. You get nice beds, bathrooms, and AC, and the private beach is right outside your door. This is where you treat yourself.

Banana Island

Banana Island is a luxury man-made island resort run by Anantara and one of the top places to visit in Qatar (outside Doha). It’s fancy AF, has its own private beach (naturally) and can be accessed by a ferry at Souq Waqif. Think of it as a mini vacation from your vacation. On the West Coast of Qatar lies Film City, an entire city built as a film set for an Arabic TV show . It neighbors Mystery Village, also built for the same show, but both places are located in the real city of Zekreet. While nobody actually lives here, it depicts what a traditional village from the past may have looked like. The surrounding landscape is quite picturesque with unique rock formations shaped by the wind and if you’re lucky, you can even spot some Oryx grazing nearby. You will need a 4×4 to visit so best to either book a tour or make some local friends with cars. More information about visiting can be found here .

Ras Abrouq Rock Formations

Similar to those found in the White Desert in Egypt , the Ras Abrouq formations are limestone structures that have been sculpted by the sand and wind over thousands of years. The Zekreet Peninsula where the formations are located is a popular place to swim and can easily be combined with a visit to Film City and the East/West West/East sculpture on a day trip. If you’ve never seen limestone formations before, I highly recommend adding this to your list of things to do in Qatar; they’re truly out of this world.

Richard Serra, the minimalist sculptor and artist was commissioned to create a piece in Qatar and thus, the  East/West West/East sculptures were born. Consisting of four fourteen-meter-high steel plates, it spans the greatest area of any of his pieces. This area is only accessible by a 4×4 or on this tour .

Drive an hour north of Doha and you’ll find the beautiful Al Thakira Mangroves . Mangroves are trees that thrive in hot and muddy conditions and the ones in Qatar are home to a host of vegetation and wildlife. The best way to explore this lush area is by kayak, which can be booked either independently or in combination with a visit to Al Zubarah Fort here .

Once a thriving trade center and pearl fishing port, Al Zubarah is Qatar’s first UNESCO World Heritage site . It is one of the best-preserved examples of an 18 th -19 th century merchant town in the region and showcases how towns were developed based on the interconnectivity between sand and sea. Al Zubarah is located on the Northwest coast of Qatar and you can take a bus there (Route 100 from Al Ghanim Bus Station) but I personally feel like it’s best combined with Al Thakira since both are half-day experiences.

Just 45 minutes west of Doha is a forty-meter-deep cave that glows (slightly) with phosphorescent gypsum crystals. You can climb down into it and maybe see owls if you’re lucky. I don’t know if it’s worth the trek *just* to see the cave but it’s there if you want to check it out.

Transport in Doha

Doha recently opened an extensive metro and bus system with lines covering transport to most places around Doha. It’s super clean and efficient and takes you to the majority of the places on this list. If you’d like to visit some of the places outside of Doha, you have a few options: renting a car , taking Uber / cabs, or booking tours. Driving in Doha is relatively straightforward in the sense that signs are bilingual and drivers generally follow the rules of the road. However, Google Maps is hit and miss due to ever-changing construction and if you want to do any desert excursions, you’ll need a 4×4 and a local who knows the road. Depending on how long you’ll be visiting, you may not need to rent a car.

Where to Eat in Doha

I really wanted to eat at enough restaurants that weren’t chains or hotel restaurants to write a solid list here, but I ultimately failed. With the exception of balaleet, makboos, and Om Ali, Qatari cuisine is basically international fusion. Balaleet and makboos can be eaten at either Al Jasra Traditional Food or Shay al Shomoos and the best Om Ali (think Arab bread pudding) can be found at Al Hubara at The Sheraton Grand.

In Qatar you can easily find a large variety of international food and chains. Some of my favorite places to eat were Parisa (Souq Waqif), Nobu (The Four Seasons), Al Mourjan (West Bay), and Sridan (The Shangri-La). Zomato is a great local resource for finding good eats.

Where to Stay in Doha

Many well-known hotel chains have properties along West Bay, the heart of Doha. Due to its central location, it’s my pick for the best neighborhood to stay in Doha. I stayed at the Sheraton Grand Doha , which was actually the first five star hotel in the country. The views and rooms were amazing, the service and amenities were exquisite and the food was delicious. Plus, it has its own beach and several pool. I highly recommend it.

If big chains aren’t your style, then it doesn’t get more boutique than the collection of boutique hotels at Souq Waqif . I toured a bunch of them and each is more beautiful than the last. What’s more, you can use the amenities from the different hotels (spa, pool, etc) so you can get the full luxury experience.

Musherib Hotel  (Budget-Friendly)

This charming budget-friendly hotel is located just a 5-minute walk from Souq Waqif and offers an impressive array of amenities for its price point. Rooms are clean, comfortable, and spacious, equipped with kettles, coffee makers, safes. The hotel also includes a gym, spa, and restaurant on-site. Overall, this hotel is the whole package and an excellent accommodation choice in Doha.

Ezdan Hotel Doha  (Mid-Range)

Located in the West Bay, this 4-star hotel is for those that are looking for an upgrade from “standard” accommodation that won’t break your bank. Rooms are modern, bright, and spacious, with spectacular views of the city. The staff is incredibly helpful and accommodating, the location is perfect, and there are plenty of awesome amenities including two swimming pools, a fitness center, two restaurants, and a supermarket. If a mid-range boutique-style hotel is what you’re after, this is where you should stay!

Sheraton Grand Doha  (Splurge)

If you want to treat yourself, what better place to do so than in Qatar’s original 5-star hotel? This is where I stayed the first time I visited Doha, and it was truly spectacular. This luxury hotel boasts large and comfortable rooms with gorgeous decor, balconies, bathtubs, and a small seating area (yes, even in the standard room). What’s more, you’ll have access to a private beach (for hotel guests only), three swimming pools, a state-of-the-art gym, and 7 restaurants on-site. What more could you need?

I wasn’t kidding when I said in the introduction that this was the ultimate guide to the best things to do in Doha and Qatar. Although many people stop in Qatar for just a few days, there are an impressive number of things to do and see. If you’re looking to just get a taste of what Qatar has to offer, the Doha Stopover program is a good choice. However, if you’d really like to explore the country, stay for a few days or even a week; you might find that there’s more to Qatar than meets the eye.

The architecture and scenery is just gorgeous! I love that you have included a packing list because if Qatar is anything like my trip to UAE, honoring the local customs can be a stretch for many Westerners.

I stay in Delhi which has been termed as one of the most unsafe cities yet there are foreigners roaming around without an issue. Not everyone should rely on media reports is my point.

I live in Dubai and I know exactly what you mean about having to address the question of ‘safety’ every time you talk or write about the Arab world. They’ve now halted all direct flights between Dubai and Doha but even when they were still flying, I actually never considered travelling to Qatar. Maybe because there are a lot of similarities (the desert, the overnight camping, camel rides, souqs, mosques) yet I think it would make for a great weekend getaway! I didn’t know this deal Qatar Airways has, of a free night in a 5-star hotel for a stopover more than 12 hours. Sounds good. Also, the film city looks pretty amazing!

The eyes of the world are on Qatar right now. Following the discovery of oil in the 1940s, this small Gulf state has been catapulted from a small fishing and trading hub to one of the richest (per capita) countries in the world.

Fuelled by oil and natural gas revenue, Qatar is developing at breakneck speed. Everything from universities to shopping malls, five-star hotels to football stadiums are springing up across the desert floor.

Modern Qatar is, for all intents and purposes, a city-state. Over half of the country's population lives in and around the capital, Doha. Other towns and districts are interspersed between oil compounds that provide Qatar with most of its wealth. Beyond oil fields, the country has its share of natural beauty, with gorgeous beaches line the western coast while spectacular dunes surround Khor Al Adaid in the south. The large expense of Al Thakira mangroves near Al Khor on the eastern seaboard also provides a sharp contrast to the adjoining desert landscape.

While Islam is the predominant religion in Qatar, the society is refreshingly tolerant. Expats are free to practise other religions and their civil liberties respected. The press is also among the freest in the region.

While matching towards liberalisation, Qatar has not lost sight of its deeply ingrained religious and cultural heritage either. Alcohol is only served in hotel bars and restaurants, work calendars are very much decided by religious commitments such as Ramadan, traditional sports such as falconry and camel-racing remain popular pastimes. Indeed, much like the geometrically patterned Islamic Art found all over the country, Qatar is a complex, yet beautiful country.

COVID-19 rules

Countries may restrict travel or bring in rules at short notice. Check with your travel company or airline for changes.

If you test positive for COVID-19, you may need to stay where you are until you test negative. You may also need to seek treatment there.

You may need to have thermal screening or temperature checks when you arrive in Qatar at air, land or sea ports.

If you are intending to stay in Qatar for 30 or more days, you must get health insurance before travelling. You must buy an insurance policy from a  registered Ministry of Public Health insurance provider (MOPH).

All visitors are advised to get travel insurance before entering Qatar. For more guidance see the MOPH website.

The standard insurance premium is 50 Qatari riyals per person, per month.

Public spaces and travel within Qatar

Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health has published advice on how to limit the spread of coronavirus .

You must wear face masks on public transport, and to enter healthcare facilities.

To enter any public and private healthcare facility, you must present your COVID-19 healthcare status via the Ehteraz app, available from the apple app store or the google playstore .

If you break the rules, punishments could include a fine of up to 200,000 Qatari riyal or a prison sentence of up to 3 years.

Passport validity requirements

If you are visiting Qatar, your passport should be valid for at least 6 months from the date you arrive.

If you are a resident of Qatar, your passport must be valid when you arrive.

Visa requirements

You can get a tourist visa on arrival if you’re travelling on a full British Citizen passport.

You must still get a visa if:

• you’re travelling for any purpose other than tourism
• you hold another type of British passport

If you need to stay longer than 30 days, you must extend your visa waiver before it expires through the Qatar Ministry of Interior . If you do not do this, you may be fined. The fine must be paid before leaving Qatar.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Qatar, you must have certificates to prove you’ve had:

• a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a  country listed as a transmission risk
• a polio vaccination in some circumstances

Customs rules

There are strict rules about what goods you can take into and out of Qatar. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Importing drugs, alcohol, pornography, pork products and religious books and material into Qatar is illegal. All luggage is scanned as you enter the country. DVDs and videos may be examined, censored and confiscated.

Qatar law also prohibits the importation, sale and purchase of electronic cigarettes, liquids and other similar products (e.g. electronic shisha pipes). The law applies regardless of quantity and intended use. Customs officials may seize and confiscate any such items found entering the country by any means, including in passengers’ luggage or sent by post.

If you are taking money, precious metals and stones into or out of Qatar which are worth more than 50,000 Qatari riyals, you must complete a declaration form. This includes:

• currency – Qatari riyal or foreign currencies
• financial bearer negotiable instruments – such as travellers cheques, money orders, cheques, promissory notes (including those endorsed without restriction, incomplete, payable to a fictitious payee or signed but without the payee’s name)
• precious metals – such as gold, silver, platinum
• precious stones – such as diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires, pearls

You must also give customs officials any other information they request.

If you break these rules, you could be fined or imprisoned, as well as the funds being seized.

Transiting through Qatar

At the airport, all bags are scanned. Transiting passengers carrying even residual amounts of drugs may be arrested. This includes medication which may be legal in other countries, but not in Qatar. See bringing medication into Qatar

Travellers cannot stay in the transit area for more than 24 hours between flights, even if you are using the transit hotel in the airport.

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

Terrorism in Qatar

Terrorist attacks in Qatar cannot be ruled out.

Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals. You should remain aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

Terrorists issue statements threatening to carry out attacks in the Gulf region. These include references to attacks on western interests, including:

• residential compounds
• military sites
• transport and aviation interests
• restaurants
• shopping centres
• large demonstrations

Military activity in the Red Sea area       

Military activity is currently underway in response to attempts by Houthi militants to prevent movement of international shipping in the Red Sea. While the area of activity is limited to the Red Sea and Yemen, there is a possibility that Travel Advice for nearby countries could change at short notice. You should continue to monitor Travel Advice and follow any relevant instructions from local authorities.

Political situation

Events in the region, including political developments, have an impact on local public opinion. Be aware of local sensitivities on these issues. Follow news reports and avoid public gatherings and demonstrations. There is the potential for increased tension on Fridays.

If any incidents occur, monitor local media reports and follow the advice of the local authorities.

Crime levels are low, but take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your belongings.

Sexual assault

Female visitors and residents should take care when walking or travelling alone, particularly at night, and should use reputable taxi companies.

Personal attacks, including sexual assault and rape, are relatively rare, but do happen. Sentences can be severe. However, Qatari law places a high burden of proof on the victim to demonstrate that sexual relations were not consensual. If they are determined to have been consensual, the victim or attacker may still face prosecution for the offence of sex outside of marriage.

Laws and cultural differences

Qatar is an Islamic country. Respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions. Make sure your actions do not cause offence, especially during the holy month of Ramadan or if you intend to visit religious areas. There may be serious penalties for doing something that might not be illegal in the UK but is in Qatar.

Personal ID

You are required by law to carry a physical form of identification at all times.

Dress modestly in public, including while driving:

• women should cover their shoulders and not wear short skirts
• men and women should not wear shorts or sleeveless tops in government buildings, healthcare facilities or malls - if you do, you may be asked to leave or be denied entry

Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims. The dates vary by year and country. Ramadan in Qatar in 2024 will likely start on 10 March and will last for 30 days. During this time, do not:

• eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public in the daytime, including in your car
• play loud music or dance
• swear in public

Get more advice when you arrive from your tour guide, hotel or business contacts.

You should also:

• check opening hours of shops and restaurants
• be aware that if hotels and restaurants are providing food or drink in fasting hours, they may separate you from Islamic guests, for example with screens
• follow local dress codes – clothing that doesn’t meet local dress codes may cause more offence at this time
• be aware that driving may be erratic, particularly when people are trying to get home at dusk
• be patient and show tolerance

Alcohol laws and bans

Only licensed hotels, restaurants and bars can sell alcohol. Expatriates living in Qatar can get alcohol on a permit system. Don’t carry alcohol around with you (except to take it on the day of collection from the warehouse to your home). The legal drinking age in Qatar is 21. Places serving alcohol will ask for original photo IDs (copies are not accepted) upon entry.

It is illegal to drink alcohol or be drunk in public. For example, if you drink in a non-licenced public place, you could get a prison sentence of up to 6 months or a fine up to 3,000 Qatari riyals.

Relationships outside marriage

Any intimacy in public, between any couples (including between teenagers), can lead to arrest.

Living together while unmarried is illegal in Qatar. Sex outside marriage is illegal for both same-sex and opposite-sex couples. You can be arrested and punishments can include a fine, a custodial sentence and deportation once the sentence is complete.

Because of laws on sex outside marriage, if someone becomes pregnant outside marriage, both partners could face imprisonment or deportation. Doctors will ask for proof of marriage during antenatal checks.

An unmarried woman who gives birth in Qatar may also face problems registering the birth of the child in Qatar, and could be arrested, imprisoned or deported. To get a birth certificate from the Qatari authorities, you must provide a marriage certificate. Authorities may compare the marriage date against the estimated date of conception.

Homosexual behaviour is illegal in Qatar. See our information and advice page for the LGBT+ community before you travel.

Organisers of protests need to get permission from the Ministry of Interior. This must be done in advance and cannot be spontaneous.

Swearing and rude gestures

Swearing and making rude gestures are considered obscene acts. You can be jailed or deported. Take particular care when dealing with police and other officials.

Smoking and e-cigarette bans

Smoking is prohibited in all closed public spaces including educational institutions, healthcare facilities, public transport, malls, restaurants and government buildings.

It is illegal to vape/use an e-cigarette or import vapes into the country. You can be arrested and punishments can include a fine, a custodial sentence or deportation.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

There is zero tolerance for drugs-related offences in Qatar, including some medications which are legal in other countries, but illegal in Qatar. See bringing medication into Qatar

Penalties for using, trafficking, smuggling and possessing drugs (even residual amounts) are severe. Punishment can include lengthy custodial sentences, heavy fines and deportation.

Using cameras and binoculars

Be aware of cultural sensitivities when filming or photographing people as taking pictures of people without their consent can cause offense.

Some visitors attempting to film or photograph near religious, military, government or construction sites have been arrested. If in doubt, seek permission.

Journalistic activity

Journalists must get permission from the Qatar News Agency (QNA) to film or photograph as part of their work and enter the country on a visiting press permit. This permit allows you to take technical equipment like cameras through airport customs.

Social media

There are strict privacy laws in Qatar. Posting material (including videos and photographs) online that appear to insult, slander or are culturally insensitive, may be considered a crime. Individuals have been detained, prosecuted and convicted for posting this type of material.

Financial crimes

Financial crimes include:

• giving somebody a cheque which bounces (including post-dated and ‘security’ cheques)
• non-payment of bills (for example hotel bills or car hire)

You may also be liable for cheques that you have signed on behalf of a company.

Financial crimes can be punished with:

• imprisonment
• deportation
• freezing bank accounts and other assets

If you have unpaid loans or financial commitments you won’t be able to cancel your residence permit, and may be prevented from leaving Qatar, including to go on holiday. All debts should be settled in full before you leave the country. Ask your bank for a certificate to confirm you have no outstanding debt once you have cleared the balance.

If you have sponsorship, it may be blocked, which will prevent you from transferring to a new sponsor (employer). Any end of service benefits you may be entitled to could be used to offset the outstanding debt.

Deportation

If you are found guilty of an offence, you may be deported. This can happen whether or not the judgement included deportation. This may affect your ability to return to Qatar.

Transport risks

Licences and permits.

Get a 1968 International Driving Permit (IDP) if you plan to drive on your UK licence. You cannot buy an IDP outside the UK, so get one before you travel.

You can drive in Qatar with a valid UK driving licence for up to 6 months with a valid IDP.

Driving in Qatar

The driver and front seat passenger must wear a seat belt at all times. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving, and you could be fined 500 Qatari riyals.

Flashing your lights in Qatar can mean a driver is coming through, rather than giving way.

It’s illegal to drink and drive, and there is zero tolerance for it. Driving under the influence of alcohol is punishable by a custodial sentence of between one month and 3 years, a fine of 10,000 to 50,000 Qatari riyals, or both. Offenders may also be deported.

Even minor expressions of ‘road rage’ like rude gestures can attract significant penalties. You may be:

• banned from leaving the country until your case has been resolved – serious cases may take up to 6 months to be heard

Check the Metrash2 app before trying to leave the country, which lists any outstanding traffic violations. If you have an outstanding violation, you could be detained at immigration and denied onward travel. Fines for all violations should be settled in full before you travel.

Road safety

Road discipline is very poor; speeds are high and accidents are common. If you have an accident, stay with your vehicle until the police arrive and tell you that you can leave. It’s illegal to leave the scene of the accident, but if no one has been injured and it’s safe to do so, you can move your vehicle to a safer place. You’ll need to get a police report for insurance purposes. Accident investigation processes and punishments for violations may be different to the UK.

Excursions to the desert can be hazardous unless in a properly-equipped 4x4 vehicle. You should:

• travel in convoy with other cars
• take a supply of water and a mobile telephone
• leave travel plans with friends or relatives

Transport safety

Don’t accept lifts from strangers. Use only licensed taxis or other recognised forms of public transport. If using apps, check licence plates and confirm with drivers the passenger name. Let someone know you are on the way home and the registration details of the car.

Take care when travelling by dhow. The safety of these vessels may not be up to UK standards. Make sure life jackets are available.

Many areas of the Gulf are highly sensitive, including near maritime boundaries and the islands of Abu Musa and the Tunbs in the southern Gulf. Vessels entering these areas have been detained and inspected, and there have been occasional arrests. Make careful enquiries before entering these waters or visiting ports.

Regional tensions may also affect your route. Vessels operating in the Gulf of Oman, Northern Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden and Bab El Mandeb regions may be at increased risk of maritime attack.

Before you travel, check that:

• you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

Bringing medication into Qatar

Some prescribed and over-the-counter medicines may be controlled substances in Qatar. If you need to bring controlled or prescription medication into Qatar, make sure you carry it in its original packaging, accompanied by your prescription and an official letter signed and stamped by your doctor. The letter should include:

• name of the medication
• quantity prescribed
• why it’s required

The letter should be signed by the doctor / consultant and stamped by the hospital or surgery.

Healthcare in Qatar

Emergency medical treatment is excellent but can be expensive. Routine treatment is available but expensive for visitors. Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation to the UK or the country where you live. COVID-19 healthcare in Qatar

If you are confirmed to have COVID-19, you are expected to self-isolate for 5 days. You do not need to do a follow-up test at the end of your isolation unless advised by a healthcare practitioner.

Due to risks to civil aviation operating within the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman region, including Qatar, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued an advisory Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) and/or a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR). Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Tourist visas:  When traveling on a U.S. tourist passport, travelers may obtain a free visa upon arrival, if they have six-months validity in their passport and a return or onward ticket. The visa is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance and entitles the holder to spend up to 30 days in Qatar, or multiple entries during the 30-day validity. It may be extended for a further 30 days. See the Government of Qatar’s website for  visa information .

Former Residency Permit Holders:  Former resident permit holders seeking to return to Qatar should carry a “no objection letter” issued by their former sponsor.

Exit Permits:

• Exit permits are no longer required for U.S. citizens working in Qatar, with the exception of employees deemed “essential” by their employers, who must still be granted an exit permit.
• If you owe money, you will be barred from exiting Qatar. Qatari banks place holds on accounts to ensure all debts are paid before you leave.
• U.S. citizens with family residence visas do not need an exit permit. However, a family member who sponsors their dependents (usually the person employed in Qatar) can elect to receive instant notification if dependents attempt to depart the country.

Qatar does not recognize dual nationality.  If you hold Qatari citizenship, Qatari law requires that you enter and exit on your Qatari passport. Qatari authorities may confiscate your U.S. passport if you hold Qatari/U.S. dual nationality. Should this happen, contact the U.S. Embassy. The seizure does not constitute loss of U.S. citizenship.

Military Personnel  should consult the Department of Defense Foreign Clearance Guide before traveling, since different entry/exit requirements may apply. For further information, call the Host Nation Coordination Cell of the 379 th  Air Expeditionary Wing at 011-974-5551-0815.

Some restrictions  exist for foreign residents of Qatar who test positive for certain communicable diseases, including HIV/AIDs. Medical exams are required for individuals seeking residency in Qatar, but not for transit passengers or short-term visitors.  Qatari authorities will not bar HIV-positive temporary visitors from entry to Qatar based on their health status.  However, Qatar denies residency and employment to HIV or tuberculosis-positive applicants (among other communicable diseases).  Short-term visitors to Qatar with medications on their person are advised to carry a copy of their prescriptions. Please verify this information with the  Embassy of Qatar  before you travel.

Customs  regulations prohibit the import of alcohol over the duty-free cap, narcotics, pork products, weapons or weapons-related articles (hand cuffs, laser pointers, etc.), drones, professional photography equipment to include telescopic lenses, as well as pornographic or sexually-related materials.

Safety and Security

Terrorism:  Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad.  Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to target crowds more effectively target crowds.  Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as: 

• High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.) 
• Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists 
• Places of worship 
• Schools 
• Parks 
• Shopping malls and markets 
• Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

• Practice personal security measures at all times.
• Keep a low profile.
• Be aware of your surroundings and local events.
• Stay alert in locations frequented by Westerners.
• Monitor local media broadcasts and consular messages.
• Vary travel routes and times when possible.
• Be extra vigilant when frequenting banks or ATMs.

Areas to Avoid:

• Large crowds and demonstrations in case of unrest
• Labor or work camps located outside of cities and major industrial areas.  These areas are highly congested with limited physical and hygiene standards.

Crime : The crime rate in Qatar is generally low. Incidents of violence and petty theft are rare but do occur.  There is a large police presence throughout the country.

International Financial Scams: See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  webpages for information on scams.

Victims of Crime : Report crimes to the local police at 999 and contact the U.S. Embassy at + (974) 4496-6000.  Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

Victims of Sexual Assault:  Sexual relations outside of marriage are illegal in Qatar and subject to criminal prosecution. Instances can result in arrest, fines, imprisonment, and deportation.  If a U.S. citizen is a victim of sexual assault in Qatar, we strongly encourage you to contact the U.S. Embassy immediately, prior to contacting the local authorities.

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are strongly urged to contact the Embassy immediately at + (974) 4496-6000 for assistance. Victims may also seek medical care through Hamad Hospital emergency room at 16060 or +(974) 4439-5777 if you are calling from overseas.

• Help you find appropriate medical care
• Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
• Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
• Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation   and following its conclusion Provide
• Provide a list of  local attorneys
• Provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
• Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
• Help you arrange flights home
• Replace a stolen or lost passport
• Assist in the birth or death of a U.S. Citizen

Tourism : The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance . 

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Exit bans prevent those faced with legal proceedings from leaving Qatar until their case is abandoned or resolved.  This can take months or years. The Government of Qatar does not offer any social support for individuals under exit bans.

Reasons for exit bans can include:

• Labor or financial disputes
• Personal debt (including bounced checks, credit card debt, and bank loans)
• Outstanding contracts or leases
• Traffic fines
• Pending legal matters, including cases related to gestures or behavior reported by Qataris that are viewed as “offensive.”

U.S. citizens have been subjected to exit bans and/or placed in prison pending payment of debts.

Always carry a copy of your passport for proof of identity, or authorities may detain you for questioning.

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be arrested, deported, or imprisoned.  Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Criminal penalties for certain offenses are much harsher than those in the U.S.:

• Incidents involving obscene language, gestures, or insulting comments often result in arrest, imprisonment, and/or fines.
• Alcohol-Related Offenses, including public intoxication, can result in severe penalties such as arrest, heavy fines, imprisonment, and/or deportation.  Qatar maintains a zero-tolerance policy against drinking and driving.
• Use of Illegal Drugs can result in long jail sentences and steep fines.

Arrest Notification:  Qatari authorities do not routinely notify the U.S. Embassy of a U.S. citizen’s arrest. If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. If you are not allowed to do so, ask a friend or family member to contact the U.S. Embassy.  See our  webpage  for further information.

For more serious crimes, Qatari authorities may not allow U.S. Embassy officials to visit until the initial interrogation is completed.

Qatari police sometimes arrest U.S. citizens without providing access to legal counsel.  You could be arrested for being a:

• Potential witness to a crime (including traffic accidents involving injuries; slander, traffic arguments, etc.)
• Relative of a suspect
• Criminal Suspect

If arrested—regardless of the charge—you may spend 1-2 nights in jail before a hearing takes place. Once arrested, only the Qatari Public Prosecution and Courts have the authority to grant a release.

Qatari law favors employers over employees.  In the event of a contract or employment dispute, Qatari authorities refer to the Arabic language of a contract. Employees have limited recourse if their employer terminates a contract early. If a sponsor files a complaint against an employee who departed Qatar, the employee may be barred from returning to Qatar, even on a tourist or airport visa. Many terminated U.S. citizens have been barred from departing Qatar because of pre-existing debt.

Despite recent legal changes, transferring employment prior to the end of a contract often requires the permission of the previous employer and is subject to approval by the Ministry of the Interior. Additional mechanisms for transferring employers exist through the Ministry of Interior in cases such as bankruptcy, abuse, or repeated failure to pay an employee on time.

Drug Use: Most drugs that are illegal in the United States are also illegal in Qatar, including marijuana/THC, CBD products, and vape products. The potential consequences for use or possession may be harsh.  

Clothing : Many public areas in Qatar have dress codes that require both men and women cover shoulders, chests, stomachs, and knees, and that tight leggings be covered by a long shirt or dress. Attire standards can vary between neighborhoods and facilities.  Faith-Based Travelers:  Religion is a very sensitive issue in Qatar; treat any discussions on religion with care and caution. The law provides for a prison sentence of up to seven years for defaming, desecrating, or committing blasphemy against Islam, Christianity, or Judaism. Public worship by non-Islamic faiths and atheism are illegal and subject to prosecution.

Proselytizing is against the law.  Attempts to covert a member of another religion or even “share your faith” can be considered “proselytizing.” Penalties cancan include deportation or imprisonment.

While you may import religious material for personal use,  bringing religious materials into the country for proselytizing purposes is prohibited.

Charitable activities, both religious and non-religious, must be approved in advance by the Ministry of Social Affairs.

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  Same-sex sexual relations between men are illegal, even if consensual. Penalties include lashing, lengthy prison sentences and/or deportation.

There is no law criminalizing same-sex sexual relations between women, though cultural norms are conservative.

The Qatari government does not accept passports with the “X” gender marker. This also applies for travel into Qatar.

Businesses are prohibited from selling and individuals are prohibited from distributing rainbow colored merchandise.

Travelers with Disabilities: The law in Qatar prohibits discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual, or mental disabilities, the law is not enforced.  Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is not as prevalent as in the in the United States.  Expect accessibility to be limited in public transportation, lodging, communication/information, and general infrastructure.

Women Travelers:  Unaccompanied expatriate women may be verbally and/or physically harassed. In deference to Islamic culture, avoid wearing sleeveless shirts, halter-tops, or shorts. Only wear athletic clothing in public when engaged in sports activities.

Journalists : Journalists, including independent content creators and vloggers, need specific visas and permissions to use photography and videography equipment, or to conduct interviews or reporting within Qatar. There is no legal guarantee of press freedom or freedom of expression in Qatar.

Photography : Photographing local people in Qatar, particularly women, is illegal without permission.

COVID-19 Testing:  COVID-19 tests are available from many local medical providers and hospitals. Testing is paid for by the individual or, in some instances, their insurance plan or employer. Private hospitals charge QR 50 - 160 test. Test results are usually provided by email, but some clinics require you to pick up the travel certificate in person. Please refer to the Ministry of Public Health’s webpage for additional information.

COVID-19 Vaccines:   The COVID-19 vaccine is available for U.S. citizens to receive in Qatar. Please refer to the Ministry of Public Health’s webpage for additional information.

Modern medical facilities and Western-style pharmacies are available. Doctors and hospitals expect immediate cash payment for health services.

Ambulance services are widely available. 

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See  our webpage  for more information on insurance coverage. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on the type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Some prescription medications from the United States are unavailable or restricted in Qatar, for example, stimulants, strong pain medications, and some medications used by HIV+ patients. Check with the  Qatari customs authority  on proper travel procedures and the  Ministry of Public Health  to ensure the medication is legal in Qatar. Discuss a health care plan with your doctor before you travel.

Contraceptives, Pregnancy, and Prenatal Care:  Sexual intercourse outside of marriage is illegal in Qatar.  As such, pregnant women must present a marriage certificate to receive prenatal care at medical facilities in Qatar.  Unmarried pregnant women should consult the U.S. Embassy prior to pursuing prenatal care in Qatar. Contraceptives are available over the counter with no prescription required. Emergency contraceptives are not available. We advise all travelers to plan accordingly.

Vaccinations : Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety: For current traffic regulations, see the  Ministry of Interior’s Traffic Police  website.

Driving:  The legal minimum driving age is 18.  Holders of a U.S. issued driver’s license can drive in Qatar for two weeks, but most car rental agencies require an international driver’s license. Three-month Temporary Licenses are available.  International Driving Licenses are valid in Qatar for six months from the date of arrival.  Resident expatriates should apply for a full Qatari license. If you are caught operating a vehicle without a valid license, penalties can be severe.  For more information, see the Qatari Traffic Services website .

Traffic accidents  are one of the leading causes of death in Qatar. The extensive use of roundabouts, numerous road construction projects, and high-speed driving can be challenging. In rural areas, poor lighting, wandering camels, and roads without shoulders create hazards.  If you are in an accident without a license, any insurance may be held invalid, and you could be left with extensive bills and legal charges.

Avoid arguments over traffic incidents . Qatari citizens who feel insulted can file a police complaint that can result in your arrest and overnight detention. Drivers are liable for persons injured in a traffic accident. Local police have held U.S. citizens overnight while ascertaining the extent of injuries.

Traffic Fines:  Please be aware that traffic offenses are easily captured via well-placed cameras and the fines can be expensive. Unpaid traffic fines can result in an exit ban until reconciled. 

Public Transportation:  Regulated and registered taxi services (Uber, Karwa, Fox Transportation, and Careem) are widely available and generally safe to use. The Embassy recommends you avoid use unlicensed taxi operators or drivers who approach you and attempt to solicit business. Do not allow the driver to pick up additional passengers along the way. To avoid cultural misunderstandings, females traveling alone should always sit in the back (never the front) seat. 

Qatar Rail : The Doha Metro is safe, modern, and inexpensive.

Mowasalat Public Bus : Laborers and construction workers predominantly use this mode of public transportation. The front seats in the buses are generally reserved for women and children. The U.S. Embassy recommends the use of regulated taxi services rather than public buses.

Aviation Safety Oversight:  The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Qatar’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Qatar’s air carrier operations. Maritime Travel:  Mariners planning travel to Qatar should also check for  U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the NGA broadcast warnings .
