Elderly American tourist killed in elephant attack while on safari in Zambia
The tourist died after the attack at Kafue National Park.
An elderly American tourist was killed after an "aggressive" bull elephant attacked a vehicle during a game drive in Zambia, the safari operator said.
The incident took place Saturday morning at Kafue National Park, a Lusaka Police spokesperson confirmed to ABC News. Gail Mattson, 79, was confirmed by the family as the victim.
"An aggressive bull elephant charged the vehicle carrying six guests and a guide who were on a game drive from Lufupa Camp," Wilderness, the company operating the safari, said in a statement to ABC News Wednesday.

Four other people received treatment for minor injuries after the incident, the company said.
"The six guests were on the game drive when the vehicle was unexpectedly charged by the bull elephant," Keith Vincent, Wilderness' chief executive officer, said in the statement, adding, that the safari guide's vehicle was "blocked" by the terrain at the time of the attack.
"Our guides are all extremely well trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide's route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm's way quickly enough," Vincent said.
Following the attack, Kafue National Park management was immediately called to assist and a helicopter was dispatched to the scene, according to Vincent. Local police, Zambia's Department of National Parks & Wildlife and other authorities are involved in the investigation, he said.

Wilderness is cooperating with the investigation, Vincent said.
"This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died," he said in the statement. "We are also, naturally, supporting those guests and the guide involved in this distressing incident."
The elderly woman's remains will be repatriated to her family in the U.S. with support from local Zambian authorities and the U.S. Embassy in Lusaka, according to the statement.

Last month, a similar bull elephant attack took place in Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa.
Videos of the March 18 incident show a bull elephant lifting a 22-seat safari truck up several times with his trunk before letting it drop. There were no deaths reported in that incident.
Hendry Blom, a bystander who caught the incident on camera, told ABC News, "We were definitely scared, especially for the people in the truck because we thought they might die."

This new layout is better IMO, but there are a few other problems that kinda bug me
Unpopular opinion, but this new layout is better. I don’t even remember the old layout since I’m not even a long-time iOS user (this is my first iPhone). I looked up the old layout or the “cascade” layout and it looks more painful to me than the new one. By the looks of it, it’s definitely easier to miss a tab you’re looking for in the older version, and then you will have to spend like 10 more minutes scrolling to find the tab you’re looking for. Sure, it may be “faster”, but it’s definitely harder to find the certain tab you’re looking for if most of the tabs are only viewable by a little area at the top. This app is mostly fine except for a few problems I get from time to time. Today I’m having a problem where I was trying to look at some Google images and then I tried to look at more but it was just stuck on loading. It wouldn’t even finish loading. This happened only on like 2 searches thankfully though. I’d probably give it a 95% since it has some minor lags and problems.
Your Underrated Prince, Safari
In my humble opinion, Safari is the underrated king among multiple web browsers on the market. I was a PC devotee from ‘95 to ‘16, since then, it’s been all Tim Cook 🍎 all the time. My only regret is not purchasing a smartphone back in ‘07 from Steve Jobs. Presently, I own an iPhone 6s Plus in rose gold (2016), iPad Mini (2016), iPad Pro (2019) & MacBook (2018) in rose gold with matching Beats By Dre headphones. All four are set up with Safari, not Chrome, TOR, Brave, Edge, or DDGo. I love the ability to quickly save favorites, add to reading list & share content to other platforms. My favorites are alphabetized for quick reference & the reading list keeps all articles & pages in chronological order for quick recall. Also, I learned Safari quickly because it’s extremely user friendly. The browser helped my navigation of Apple when switching from PC. I’ll admit, learning MacBook isn’t easy, but, Safari keeps things familiar for me on the desktop. When lost, just go back to Safari & start over. It’s surprising no one in tech media mentions Safari more often as a go to source for navigating the internet. Chrome is the reigning king of, Land Of Browsers, without an heir apparent. I nominate Safari as the prince with future king potential. Citizens of Land Of Browsers don’t like their chrome-plated dirty laundry aired, sold or tracked.
I have been using this for years and had no problems with it. I ran over my phone with my lawn mower and was without my phone for over a year due to having to fight with the insurance company. However when I finally got a lawyer involved the insurance company finally replaced it for me. I DID not lose anything and I mean anything. I like the cards better because they are easier to clear out. You have to back everything up to your cloud every day or every other day so that you don’t have to worry about losing anything. As I always make sure that I back everything up just in case. It is not apples fault if you lose your any of your information it is yours for not backing up your phone to your cloud. So most of the people who write bad reviews either don’t back up or they just don’t or they just don’t care. Apple doesn’t charge a lot to add more space to your cloud so there is no reason why you can’t back you things. This is better than anything that google has. By far. If you want your information used by third parties then use google’s and quit complaining. You can change your browser in safari so that you don’t have to use them get with it you bad reviews and learn how to use safari.

Kenya police suspected of helping alleged "psychopathic serial killer" Collins Jumaisi escape from jail
August 21, 2024 / 6:59 AM EDT / CBS/AFP
Nairobi — Five Kenyan police officers appeared in court Wednesday, suspected of helping a man accused of murdering and dismembering dozens of women escape from a Nairobi jail cell. Police launched a manhunt Tuesday after alleged serial killer Collins Jumaisi and 12 Eritreans broke out of a police station in an upmarket area of the Kenyan capital.
Jumaisi, 33, was described by police as a "psychopathic serial killer with no respect for human life" when he arrested last month after the horrific discovery of a number of mutilated bodies in a rubbish dump in a slum area of the Kenyan capital.
He and the other detainees appeared to have escaped by cutting through a wire mesh roof at the station.
"Our preliminary investigations indicate that the escape was aided by insiders," acting national police chief Gilbert Masengeli said Tuesday.
Five out of eight officers who were arrested over the escape appeared in a Nairobi court on Wednesday, with police seeking an order to detain them for another 14 days in order to complete their investigations.
Police said they discovered the breakout when officers made a routine visit to the cells at around 5:00 am on Tuesday to serve the prisoners breakfast.
"On opening the cell door, they discovered that 13 prisoners had escaped by cutting the wire mesh in the basking bay," police said in a statement, referring to a covered courtyard area in the station where detainees could get access to fresh air.
The 12 Eritreans had been arrested for being in Kenya illegally, police said, adding that four other detainees who did not escape were helping with the investigation.
The police station is located in the Gigiri district which is home to the regional headquarters of the United Nations and numerous embassies.
Police said after Jumaisi's arrest on July 15 that he had confessed to murdering 42 women over a two-year period from 2022, with his wife his first victim.
Jumaisi claimed he had been molested and tortured, his lawyer told AFP last month.
It is the second time in barely six months that a suspect in a high-profile case has escaped from custody.
Kenyan national Kevin Kangethe, who is accused of murdering his girlfriend in the United States last year and leaving her body in an airport car park, fled a police station in February before being caught about a week later. a judge ordered him to be extradited back to the U.S. in early August.

2 Climb Fence At Six Flags Safari Against Coronavirus Order: Cops
JACKSON, NJ — Three trespassers made their way into the safari at Six Flags Great Adventure this week, violating the stay-at-home orders during the coronavirus crisis, police said. Two of them allegedly were caught on camera climbing the fence.
The trespassers risked their safety by possibly coming into contact with the animals, police said.
The two fence-climbers were in the safari area for about a half hour on Tuesday before leaving. Police are trying to identify the two men, and the investigation continues.
On Thursday, a 49-year-old man was charged with defiant trespassing when he went to the park because he said he wanted to see the animals, police said. He was released at the scene, pending a court appearance.
Not only did the trespassers violate Gov. Phil Murphy’s stay-at-home orders, they also trespassed at the park which is closed until mid-May at least, according to Jackson police.
Anyone with information on these incidents is asked to contact the Jackson Police Department at 732-928-1111 or through the department’s StopIt app online.

This wasn't the only time people have been caught trespassing in the area, police said.
Earlier in the week, on April 12, officers found a family riding bicycles along Reed Road, which is an unpaved township road, police said. While they weren’t trespassing on the park’s property, they were warned and police contacted park representatives to tell them they could file charges if they wanted.
The family was also advised to follow social distancing guidelines, but no summonses were issued, police said.
“We recommend that residents observe the Governor’s Executive Orders and stay at home, but if you do go outside, please remember to socially distance yourself from others,” Jackson police said. “If going out, please do not trespass onto Six Flags Adventure Property (or any others), as the park is closed at this time. There will be additional patrols in the area and officers will investigate and evaluate each instance independently, keeping in mind the Executive Orders and Constitutional Rights and complaints will be signed when warranted.”
Murphy issued the stay-at-home orders on March 21. Six Flags Great Adventure & Safari and Six Flags Hurricane Harbor have temporarily suspended operations and will open in mid-May, or as soon as possible thereafter, according to the park’s website .

WEATHER ALERT
A flood warning in effect for Columbia County
Former jso officer guilty on 14 counts, jury will begin penalty phase of trial next week.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – On their fifth day of deliberations, a federal jury found former Jacksonville police officer Karl Waldon guilty of 14 of the 15 counts against him -- including two charges that could carry the death penalty.
The defendant, court officials and lawyers quickly gathered late Wednesday to hear the verdict. Eyewitness News reporter Jen Waugh reported that Waldon (pictured, left, leaving the courthouse Wednesday) showed no emotion as he stood to hear the verdict.
Recommended Videos
Waldon is now convicted in the strangulation death of Northside businessman Sami Safar (pictured, right), who was found murdered on the 4th of July, 1998.
"Obviously we're pleased with the verdict," lead prosecutor Jim Klint said. He refused to elaborate about the case as the penalty phase of the case will begin next week.
Waldon was arrested almost two years ago after a federal indictment charged him with 15 counts, including Safar's murder, kidnapping, robbery and the sale of cocaine -- an investigation that began more than four years ago when Jacksonville police began to hear stories from drug dealers that officers had stolen money and drugs from them.
Jacksonville Sheriff Nat Glover said late Wednesday that justice had been served in the case.
"You've got a number of officers -- some angry about what has happened here, some same; some feel embarrassed," Nat Glover said to the media about an hour after the verdict was made public. "Of course, I've felt all those emotions, so I certainly understand. And of course I feel bad for the victim's family, as well."
Waldon was found not guilty of one count -- that of possession of crack cocaine with an intent to distribute.
During the trial, prosecutors called Waldon, 39, greedy and arrogant, and told the jury that he killed Safar when plans to robbed him of $51,000 withdrawn from the bank to cash payroll checks at the man's four convenience spun out of control.
A two-year federal investigation lead to a 26-count indictment that included Waldon, two other Jacksonville police officers and several others. The indictment portrayed a web of robbery, drug dealing and corruption that ultimately led to Safar's murder.
All the defendants reached plea agreements with federal prosecutors, and most of them testified against Waldon. That fact was central to Waldon's defense, with attorney A. Russell Smith telling the jury in his closing argument that Waldon was the victim of lies from a group of corrupt officers and witnesses.
"The government's case is based on the testimony of cooperating criminals who lied over and over and over again. Every single one of them testified differently or told a different story," Smith said.
Attorneys expected the trial to take 4 to 6 weeks, but it actually took only about three -- including one week of jury deliberations.
The eight-woman, four-man jury will return the federal courthouse Tuesday morning to begin hearing the death penalty phase of the trial.

Frequency Listings for ITAC and State Repeaters

This topic has been discussed in this forum before. Today I heard units on VECC fire TGs discussing the use of Talkaround Channels. I know that UCAN has Ops, Regionals, Events, ITACs, State Rpts, and State T/A's programmed into the template of every radio. I know what those ITAC & State freqs are, but not everyone else does. When I check the DB for these 800 Repeaters and simplex freqs, I don't find them. Perhaps they are there and I just didn't look in the right place. Since UCAN's standard radio template includes the ITAC and State freqs, I think they should be listed after the UCAN system freqs. These ITAC & State Rptr freqs are also "Common Use" or "Shared" So when I look in the file for State Common Use, I should find those freqs. Conclusion: If someone wants/needs these freqs, they should be readily available. We shouldn't have to search high and low for them. Your ideas/opinions, pro or con, are welcome.

ITAC Channels in Utah, USA Thank you, Mike Oxlong, for the link to Common Public Safety freqs. It is a really great listing, and as thorough as it may be, it falls short. Lets say I plan to travel the I-15 corridor to Mesquite, AZ. Can you tell me which of the ITAC channels may be active along the route, and where they are located? I want to go to Moab, UT during the Easter Jeep Safari. Cops from all over the state go there to augment the Grand County Sheriff. They are known to use one of the State TalkAround 800 MHz freqs for speed enforcement and crowd control. If I go to the database and look up Utah>Grand County, will I find listings for any T/A or ITAC freqs? Utah Communications Agency Network (UCAN) has a map on their website that shows locations of transmitters with ITAC freqs. That information should be part of the DB for any respective county, city, etc.
If you are referring to the ITAC channels only then no, they are common across the continent and don't belong in the State listing. With today's multichannel scanners, it's not a big deal to put all 5 channels in. However, if you are talking about specific frequencies that are not part of the ITAC channels, then yes, they should be at least listed in the database under Utah's common frequencies or under the individual County. I checked the database and didn't see any 800Mhz simplex frequencies or repeaters, only VHF. It doesn't appear that anybody has submitted these frequencies yet so you might want to submit them if you haven't already.
