Singapore Entry Requirements for UK Citizens

Tourist Visa Needed

(for stays of up to 90 days)

Arrival Card Needed

What British need to enter to Singapore

All foreign nationals, including British citizens, must hold a valid Singapore Arrival Card (SGAC) to enter Singapore. The SGAC is an e-service introduced in order to simplify the process of registering arrivals into the country . In addition, it makes document checks at the Singapore border smoother and faster.

The SG Arrival Card replaces the paper-based Disembarkation/Embarkation Card for Singapore, which has now been discontinued.

Do British Nationals Need an Arrival Card to Visit Singapore

All travellers from the United Kingdom, regardless of the purpose and duration of their visit, must obtain a Singapore tourist card for British nationals .

It is important to keep in mind that the SGAC for the UK is not a visa . It is actually a mandatory entry requirement for all foreign visitors. British nationals who need a visa must submit a separate application either online or at the nearest embassy or consulate.

The SGAC for British travellers is valid for 90 days from the date of entry in Singapore for visa-free stays.

What Singapore visas are available for British nationals?

Singapore offers several types of visas that fall into one of two broad categories: short-term tourist visas and long-term visas .

British passport holders who wish to stay in Singapore for less than 90 days for tourism, leisure, or family visits, can travel visa-free. Long-term Singapore visas are available for UK citizens who intend to remain in the country for extended periods of time, work, study, or move to Singapore .

Note that the visa eligibility status does not in any way affect the need to obtain an SG Arrival Card for British citizens, and vice versa. Having successfully obtained a Singapore Arrival Card does not waive the UK holder’s visa requirements.

What are the SGAC entry requirements for the UK?

The SGAC entry requirements for UK citizens are minimal and include having:

  • Access to a reliable internet connection and a device like a mobile phone, laptop, or tablet that will be used for online application
  • A UK passport with at least 6 months of validity left from the intended date of arrival in Singapore
  • A completed Singapore tourist card application form
  • An active email address for all communication regarding the SG Arrival Card
  • A debit or credit card to complete the online payment of the Singapore Arrival Card processing fee.

Because the SGAC is electronically linked to the passport used during the application, British candidates must use the same passport for applying for the SG Arrival Card and entering Singapore. That is also something dual citizens with multiple passports need to keep in mind. Some travellers from the UK may be required to show additional documentation such as:

  • Proof of onward or return travel
  • Financial evidence such as a bank statement showing that the SGAC holder can pay for their stay in Singapore
  • Vaccine certificates.

How to apply for a Singapore Arrival Card as British traveller

Obtaining an SGAC for British passport holders is a quick and easy process that can be done online in a matter of minutes. Although it is possible to help someone else complete their SGAC application, each request must be submitted individually.

To successfully complete the application, travellers must fill out the personal details and passport information in the application form including:

  • Nationality
  • Date of birth
  • Place of birth
  • Passport number
  • Passport country
  • Date of issue of the passport
  • Date of expiry of the passport
  • Home address
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Travel plans

After they have confirmed that all the information entered in the application form is correct, candidates will be asked to pay for the SGAC application fee through a secure online payment system. Payment can be done using any internationally recognised debit or credit card.

UK applicants will receive all communications regarding their Singapore Arrival Card via email to the address they have provided on the application form. It is, therefore, essential to regularly check the email address for notifications and status updates.

British SGAC holders can present their tourist card in its electronic format on their phone or another mobile device , along with their passport, upon arrival in Singapore.

Please note that the Singapore arrival card does not in itself guarantee entry into the country. The final decision is up to the Singaporean border control and immigration authorities.

Singapore Arrival Card for British visitors: Processing time

SGAC online applications are in most cases processed within one business day . However, applicants should submit their request at least 5 days prior to departure to allow enough time for delays that may be caused by public holidays and missing or incomplete information in the application form.

Register with the British Embassy in Singapore

UK citizens are highly recommended to register with the British Embassy before travelling to Singapore. Although most trips are problem-free, registered visitors enjoy greater peace of mind. British tourists who enrol with the embassy:

  • Receive the latest safety and security information about Singapore
  • Can be contacted and assisted more easily in exceptional circumstances such as a natural disaster
  • Help family get in touch if there is an emergency whilst they’re away from home

British travellers can register their details with the embassy when applying for a Singapore Arrival Card through this website. To opt-in, applicants should select the UK Embassy Registration service on the payment page.

Tourist Visa (e-Visa) Application Process

Singapore Tourist Visa (e-Visa) Application Portal (SAVE)

You cannot apply for the Singapore tourist visa (e-Visa) on your own. You must apply using a Singapore local contact or an authorized visa agent.

Most Singapore overseas missions do not accept tourist visa applications. They will ask you to use a local contact or an authorized agent.

But there are still a handful of Singapore embassies in the world that are still accepting tourist visa applications.

In summary, there are 3 ways to apply for Singapore tourist visa.

  • Apply using a local contact
  • Apply using an authorized visa agent
  • Apply at a Singapore Overseas Mission

Let’s look at each of these options in detail.

1. Apply for tourist visa using a local contact

You must know someone in Singapore who can act as your local contact to apply for the tourist visa on your behalf.

This local contact in Singapore must have a “Singpass” account. Only Singapore citizens and Singapore Permanent Residents have Singpass accounts.

Send the following information and documents to your local contact.

  • A copy of your passport ID page
  • A digital passport-size photo
  • Your email address, phone number
  • Your current occupation, highest educational degree and annual income (in SGD)
  • Your date of arrival, intended stay, and country of departure

Have your local contact follow the below steps to apply for your e-Visa.

Step 1 : Navigate to the Submission of Application for Visa Electronically (SAVE) portal.

Step 2 : Select “Apply for Entry Visa as a Local Contact (Individual Users)”. You will be redirected to the Singpass website to log in.

Step 3 : Click on “Create a New Application”.

Step 4 : Sequentially fill in the applicant’s details, travel information, and local contact details, upload a photo, and confirm.

Step 5 : Pay the visa fee of 30 SGD from the “MyCard Payment Summary” page. Download the invoice.

Step 6 : Print or screenshot the acknowledgment page and send it to the applicant. This acknowledgment page has the “Visa Application Reference Number” which is required to track or download the e-Visa.

If your email was used during the application process, you will also receive an acknowledgment email with the “Visa Application Reference Number”.

If your local contact used their email, they can forward the acknowledgment email to you so you can make a note of the “Visa Application Reference Number” and track the status of your e-Visa.

The processing of the e-Visa takes 3-5 working days. You can track the application status and download your approved e-Visa.

Instructions to track the status and download the approved e-Visa are in the sections below.

2. Apply for tourist visa using an authorized visa agent

The Singapore embassies that do not accept tourist visa applications usually post a list of authorized visa agents on their websites.

Find the nearest Singapore Overseas Mission in your country and check their website for the list of authorized visa agents.

Go to the authorized visa agent’s office and submit the following documents.

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of your entry into Singapore
  • Photocopy of your passport biodata page
  • One passport-size photo affixed on the form
  • Round-trip flight tickets
  • Hotel bookings
  • Completed Form V39A LOI (if applicable)
  • Visa fee and service fee in local currency

Authorized agents do not keep your original passport with them. Presenting the original passport at the time of application submission is only for verification purposes.

Authorized agents have access to the SAVE portal and they will apply for your visa on your behalf. They will send you the “Visa Application Reference Number” to track and download your approved e-Visa.

Instructions to track the status and download the approved e-Visa are in the sections below.

3. Apply for tourist visa at Singapore overseas mission

Check with your nearest Singapore overseas mission if they accept tourist visa applications. If they do, find out whether you need an appointment or you can just walk in.

Submit the following documents to the Singapore embassy.

  • Visa fee in local currency

The embassy will not keep your original passport. Presenting the original passport is only for verification purposes.

You will receive an email from the embassy with the “Visa Application Reference Number” to track and download your approved e-Visa.

How to track tourist visa (e-Visa) status

Even though you had to use a local contact or visa agent to apply, you can track status and download the e-Visa yourself. Follow the below steps to track your e-Visa status.

  • Navigate to the Singapore SAVE portal
  • Click on “Enquire Application Status”
  • Enter your Visa Application Reference Number, and passport number and click on the “Next” button
  • On the next page, you will see your current e-Visa status.

If your visa application is still in process, the status will be “Visa Application in Pending”. If approved, it will be “Your Application is Approved”.

How to download an approved tourist visa (e-Visa)

Follow the above steps to track your e-Visa status. If the visa has been successfully issued, you will see “Your Application is Approved” with your approved visa details.

Click the “Print e-Visa” button to download your e-Visa as a PDF file.

Print this e-Visa on an A4 or letter-size sheet and present it with your passport at immigration in Singapore.

How to contact tourist visa customer service

If you or your local contact have questions, use the following options to contact ICA customer service.

Webpage: Check the User Manual for questions on filling out the visa application  Email: [email protected]

Entry Procedure at the Border

Make sure to print your e-Visa before your trip to Singapore. If you are eligible to use automated immigration lanes, you may not need a print. But the airline might want to see a print of your e-Visa.

Submit SG Arrival Card (SGAC)

You must submit your SG Arrival Card (SGAC) online within 3 days before arrival in Singapore. You can submit SGAC either online or using the MyICA Mobile App.

Use automated immigration lanes

Passport holders from 60 countries are eligible to use automated lanes at Changi airport and land borders. If you are not eligible to use automated lanes, you may pass through manned immigration desks.

You may be asked to present your e-Visa print. You may also be asked to produce proof of onward travel and proof of sufficient cash to ensure that you do not overstay your visa.

Receive Electronic Visit Pass (e-Pass)

Singapore does not stamp passports on entry or exit. After clearing the immigration, an Electronic Visit Pass (e-Pass) is issued and sent to your email which you have mentioned in your SG Arrival Card.

You can also retrieve your e-Pass on the ICA website using your Disembarkation/Embarkation number (DE No.) or passport information.

You can find your DE No. in your SG Arrival Card (SGAC) acknowledgment email, PDF or mobile app.

The e-Pass contains the following details:

  • Disembarkation/Embarkation number (DE No.)
  • Date and time of issuance of visit pass
  • Number of days of stay granted
  • Last day of stay allowed in Singapore

The e-Pass will also mention whether you are eligible to use the automated lanes for your departure and any subsequent trips to Singapore.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do i need to print the singapore e-visa.

Yes. You must print the Singapore e-Visa. Singaporean authorities may have the e-Visa on file already, but you are still asked to present if you’re not using the automated immigration lanes. Also, the airline staff might want to see the e-Visa print when checking in.

Why is there no visa stamp in my passport?

Singapore has phased out issuing physical stamps in passports. Instead, you will be issued an electronic visit pass (e-Pass) and sent to your email shortly after you enter Singapore.

Everything You Need To Know About A Singapore Visa

singapore-visa-image

You can stay in Singapore for up to a maximum period of 90 days without a visa. However, the final granted stay period is determined by the immigration authorities after your arrival -- once they evaluate your purpose of stay.

In order to gain a visa exemption in Singapore, your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from your date of arrival in the country. Additionally, it must contain at least 2 unused visa pages.

Next, ensure that you carry proof of sufficient funds in the form of cash or bank statements. Immigration authorities may ask you to show evidence that you can sustain your stay for the specified period.

You should also carry all the required documents that grant you entry to the next destination or home country.

Before traveling, don’t forget to check with your airlines if they allow boarding without a visa. Additionally, check if your itinerary has overseas connecting flights that may need an individual transit visa.

When should British nationals apply for a visa to Singapore?

If you possess non-regular travel documents such as British Travel Document or UK Certificate of Travel, you might have to apply for a visa prior to your travel through the High Commission for the Republic of Singapore in London. You also need to obtain a visa if you are traveling for purposes other than tourism or business -- which include:

  • Visa for film or media personal
  • Visa for official travel

The documents required for the above categories of visa are as follows:

  • A completed and signed visa application form
  • 1 recent passport-sized color photograph not older than three months
  • An original passport valid for at least 6 months with a minimum of 2 blank visa pages
  • A photocopy of the biodata pages of the passport
  • A photocopy of your valid UK visa or residence permit in the UK
  • A copy of your hotel reservations
  • A copy of your flight itinerary
  • A letter of introduction from a local contact in Singapore or a Singapore Permanent Resident, accompanied by your sponsor’s ID
  • Your contact details
  • A cover letter from your company in the UK, specifying your status in the organization and purpose of visit
  • Additional supporting documents as required by the relevant visa category

Once your documents are ready, submit the complete package in person at the consular section of the embassy, which remains open from 9.30 am to 12:30 pm from Monday to Friday. It is closed on UK public holidays and Singapore National Day on August 9th.

You can also make a postal application by enclosing a self-addressed, pre-paid Royal Mail "special delivery" envelope, which will also return your documents.

Once you make your application, it may take 5 to 10 working days for your visa to be approved. Visa fees are accepted only in cash or British Postal Order made payable to Singapore High Commission. Once the visa is approved, you will be emailed an e-visa in PDF format. You need to present this at the immigration counter and the actual visa will be stamped on your passport.

Working in Singapore

If you wish to enter Singapore for work, undergo training, or a short-term work assignment, you must apply for a relevant work pass. Work passes are available in multiple categories -- for professionals, workers and semi-skilled workers, students and trainees, and dependants.

Under the professional category, you can get an Employment Pass, EntrePass, or a Personalised Employment Pass. In the category for skilled and semi-skilled workers, you get an S Pass and Work Permits. Trainees and students are applicable for Training Employment Pass, Work Holiday Pass, and Training Work Permits. Family members may obtain a Dependant's Pass or a Long Term Visit Pass.

You should be aware of the required pass type before you apply for a work pass to enter Singapore. All the details for work passes can be found here . Similarly, for UK residents wishing to study in Singapore, you need a student pass, the information which can be found on this website .

Customs regulations

Singaporean authorities do not allow the import of certain controlled drugs and pirated copyright materials. You cannot enter the nation with items such as replica guns, radio communications equipment, and weapons and ammunition, including even empty cartridge cases and air guns.

Health requirements

Some over the counter medicines available in the UK are branded as controlled substances in Singapore. Hence, before entering the nation, obtain prior authorization and a permit from the Singapore Health Sciences Authority. You need to make this application at least 10 days before your planned travel dates.

The allowable quantity for unapproved medicines that do not contain a controlled substance is an amount that can last up to 3 months. However, you must present valid supporting documents like a doctor’s prescription.

Additionally, if you are traveling via the Middle East, you may be subjected to a screening test for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

UK Emergency Travel Documents

The Singaporean authorities accept UK Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs) at points of entry, airside transit, and exit. This document should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months. You don't need a visa on your ETD if you are entering or transiting through Singapore.

There have been ongoing demonstrations and cases of unrest in several cities in the United Kingdom following the Southport attack on 29 July 2024. Singapore citizens residing in or travelling to the UK are urged to stay vigilant and take all necessary precautions for their personal safety, including monitoring the media for information and updates. They should avoid affected areas as much as possible due to potential violence stemming from ongoing protests and rioting.

Singapore citizens in need of consular assistance can contact the Singapore High Commission in London Emergency Tel: +44 (0) 7710 348 335 or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Duty Office (24 hours) Tel: +65 6379 8800/8855.

Entry and Exit

Singaporeans can visit the UK without a visa. Passport must be valid for the duration of your stay (We recommend that travellers should have at least six months passport validity). If you're planning to visit the UK for more than six months, or for any purpose other than tourism, please refer to the UK Visas and Immigration website at  https://www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration  to ensure you apply for the appropriate visa.

As visa requirements often change at short notice, we advise you to contact your travel agency, or the British High Commission in Singapore for up-to-date information.

The UK is not part of the Schengen area, and a passport is required to travel between the UK and other European countries, including Ireland.

From 20 May 19, Singaporeans are eligible to use eGates at 15 air and rail ports in the UK for quicker automated immigration clearance into the UK. However, not everyone should use the eGates. In this regard, please check the UK Visas and Immigration website at  https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coming-to-the-uk/faster-travel-through-the-uk-border .

UK airports administer extensive security screening for passengers. If you are flying to the UK, allow extra time for extended screenings and luggage checks at your airport of departure. Check the UK Visas and Immigration website at  https://www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration/arriving-in-the-uk  for further information on these measures and on current hand luggage restrictions at UK airports.

You must declare to Customs:

  • anything over your duty-free allowance
  • banned or restricted goods in the UK, e.g. meat and dairy products from most non-EU countries
  • goods that you plan to sell
  • more than €10,000 (or its equivalent) in cash, if you’re coming from outside the EU

Safety and Security

The UK faces a serious and challenging threat from terrorism, international groups, domestic extremists and Northern Ireland-related groups.

On 15 November 2021, the UK threat level for international terrorism was raised from ‘Substantial’ to ‘Severe’ (level four on a five point scale, with level five being the most likely), which means an attack is highly likely. The threat to Northern Ireland from Northern Ireland-Related Terrorism remains at ‘Severe’.

Threat levels do not have an expiry date. They can change at any time as different information becomes available to security agents. For more information on the current threat level, please visit the Home Office website at www.gov.uk/terrorism-national- emergency  or the Security Service website at  www.mi5.gov.uk/threat-levels .

Members of the public should always remain alert to the danger of terrorism and report any suspicious activities to the police on 999 or the anti-terrorist hotline: 0800 789 321.  Members of the public should:

  • remain alert to the danger of terrorism
  • look out for suspicious behaviour or unattended bags on public transport and in other public places
  • look out for other signs of possible terrorist activity
  • report suspicious behaviour and unattended bags to the police
  • take heed of any official warnings
  • follow the advice of local authorities

The Police Service, the British Transport Police and many partners in the UK and abroad work very hard to keep the public safe from threats. Attacks are infrequent but the simple ‘Run Hide Tell’ guidance offered by the National Police Chiefs’ Council is useful and relevant when you encounter a firearms and weapons attack, the video guidance for which can be found at  www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUCW_ mk35Xc

The phone number for police/fire/ambulance emergency services is 999 in the United Kingdom. You should also use this number to report security threats or suspicious packages.

Travellers and residents encounter petty crime, such as pickpocketing and mobile phone theft, across the UK, especially in crowded tourist locations.

  • Be cautious and aware of your surroundings.
  • Be vigilant, as pickpocketing, mugging and “snatch and grab” theft of mobile phones, watches and jewellery can occur.
  • Do not leave bags unattended in restaurants, pubs, hotel lobbies, and parked cars.
  • Be alert to other criminal schemes, such as impostors posing as undercover police officers and “fining” tourists for bogus minor offences. A legitimate London Metropolitan Police Services officer will never demand an immediate cash payment.
  • Use only licensed Black Cabs or pre-ordered car services (minicabs). Unlicensed taxis or private cars posing as taxis may offer low fares, but in some instances, travellers have been robbed or sexually assaulted while using these cars. The Safer Travel at Night partnership among the Metropolitan Police, Transport for London, and the Mayor of London maintains a website with additional information on cabs and car services at www.tfl.gov.uk/modes/taxis-and-minicabs
  • Avoid using ATMs that look temporary in structure or location or are located in isolated areas – they may not be legitimate. Use ATMs located inside a bank branch.
  • Scams: Financial crimes conducted over the internet have increased dramatically in the United Kingdom as scammers attempt to convince you to send them money. These fraudulent schemes can include:
  • Online dating/social networking services
  • Inheritance notices
  • Work permits/job offers
  • Bank overpayments
  • Schemes that make it appear you are helping a loved one or a friend in trouble

All visitors and residents are subjected to local laws and penalties. Research on local laws prior to arrival especially for extended stays. Do note the following laws that can affect your visit or stay:

There are strict regulations on drone flights (with/without fitted cameras). Read more here .

Useful link on “your rights and the law” can be found here: www.gov.uk/browse/justice/rights

Additional Information

Health: While medical services are widely available, free medical care under the National Health System (NHS) is extended only for UK residents, certain EU nationals, and some visa holders.  Please refer to the NHS’s guidance on the way overseas visitors are charged for NHS hospital care.

Ensure that you have comprehensive travel insurance before you travel.

Road Conditions and Safety: You can drive any small vehicle (e.g. car or motorcycle) listed on your full and valid licence for 12 months from when you last entered Great Britain (GB)

  • Using a hand-held cell phones or similar device while driving is illegal in the United Kingdom. Only hands-free phones may be used. You will be fined, or in the case of an accident, arrested and serve time in prison.
  • You will be detained and arrested if you cannot provide a UK address to receive a subpoena or are about to depart the United Kingdom and have to be brought to court quickly for a motoring offence.
  • In Central London, a congestion charge is levied on all drivers who pass through the zone. You will be fined or arrested if you do not pay the charge. See Transport for London’s website www.tfl.gov.uk for more information about driving in London.

General Travel Advice

Overseas Travel – Be Informed & Be Safe [Updated on 5 February 2024]

Singaporeans planning overseas travel are reminded to take the necessary precautions, including being prepared to deal with accidents, natural disasters or terrorist attacks. Singaporeans are also reminded to be familiar with your destination’s local laws, customs, and COVID-19 regulations.

Demonstrations do occur in major cities across the world. Such demonstrations can sometimes escalate into violence. It is important for Singaporeans to keep abreast of local news, avoid any protests or demonstrations and heed the advice of the local authorities.

When participating in outdoor leisure activities overseas, Singaporeans should be mindful that certain sporting activities, especially in open seas, may carry risks. Besides ensuring that one has the physical competencies and appropriate condition to undertake the activity, every effort should be made to ascertain if the trip organiser or guide is reliable and competent, and that appropriate safety and contingency plans are in place. When in doubt, Singaporeans should consult the relevant professional bodies or sporting associations for specific advice.

For those planning to travel, here are some tips:

Before travelling

  • Familiarise yourself with our network of overseas missions.
  • Purchase comprehensive travel insurance and be familiar with the terms and coverage.
  • Equip yourself with research about your destination’s entry requirements, current situation, local laws and customs.
  • eRegister with us on our website ( www.mfa.gov.sg ) so that we may reach out to you during an emergency.

While travelling

  • Always take care of your personal safety, remain vigilant and monitor local weather news, advisories, and security developments.
  • Exercise caution around large gatherings and avoid locations known for demonstrations or disturbances.
  • Be prepared for possible delays and last-minute changes in travel plans especially during unforeseen events such as natural disasters, social unrest or terror attacks.
  • Stay connected with your friends and family. Inform them of your whereabouts and provide them with your overseas contact details.
  • In the event that you require consular assistance, please contact the nearest Singapore Overseas Mission or call the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Duty Office at +65 6379 8800/+65 6379 8855.

Advisory: Email Scams

There have been reports of individuals receiving scam emails/messages purportedly sent from friends in distress overseas. These emails/messages typically originate from an email address/social media known to the receiver bearing claims of the sender getting into trouble overseas and urgently requesting financial assistance. The sender would also claim to have approached a Singapore Embassy/Consulate and the local Police for help to no avail.

MFA takes the safety of all Singaporeans very seriously.  Singaporeans in distress approaching our Overseas Missions for assistance will be rendered with all necessary consular assistance.  If you receive such emails/messages from purported friends seeking funds transfers, we strongly advise you to call them first to verify the authenticity of the emails/messages before responding to their request.  It is also not advisable to give out any personal information such as NRIC/passport numbers, address, telephone number, etc.  Any form of reply, even one of non-interest, could result in more unsolicited emails.  Members of the public who suspect that they have fallen prey to such scams should report the matter to the Police immediately.  Should Singaporeans abroad require consular assistance, they can contact the nearest Singapore Overseas  Mission  or call the Ministry of Foreign Affairs 24-hr Duty Office at +65 6379 8800/+65 6379 8855.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a ministry of the Government of Singapore responsible for conducting and managing diplomatic relations between Singapore and other countries and regions.

Do I need a visa to visit Singapore?

Singapore is famously known for being a state of rules, so check to see whether you need a visa for your visit © 2p2play / Shutterstock

A visit to Singapore is a glimpse into the future. From its modern and almost surreal airport  to its eye-catching and ever-changing skyline, Singapore is continuously innovative.

Even though the tourist entry requirements for most nationalities are straightforward, Singapore is known for its commitment to the rules. Here's what you need to know about visas for Singapore, including what types of visas are available and the rules you’ll need to navigate for trouble-free travel.

What you need to know about visas in Singapore

The visa requirements for travel to Singapore depend on your nationality, how many days you'll spend in the country and why you're visiting. Citizens of 164 different countries can enter Singapore as tourists for a period of 30 or 90 days without a visa.

Passport holders from the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan and the United States get 90 days visa-free in Singapore, while citizens of some other countries can stay a maximum of 30 days without applying for a visa.

Travelers from countries that aren't on the visa waiver list  have to apply for either an e-visa or a regular tourist visa, depending on their nationality. While e-visa applications can be easily done at any online e-visa provider and have a processing time of just one day, regular visas are a bit more involved, requiring travelers to get in contact with their nearest Singaporean diplomatic mission or apply for a visa through an agent.

Singapore's Frequent Traveller Programme

The Frequent Traveller Programme allows visitors from Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States to use the automated clearance facilities at immigration, a process that significantly simplifies entering Singapore and helps frequent travelers avoid long wait times at peak hours.

What else do you need when visiting Singapore?

All tourists arriving in Singapore must have a valid passport (with a minimum validity of six months at the time of departure), sufficient funds for their stay in Singapore and an SG Arrival Card.

Unlike most other Southeast Asian countries, Singapore does not have a paper-based Disembarkation Card to be filled out on arrival in the country. Instead, all travelers (including those enrolled in the Frequent Traveller Programme) are required to submit an SG Arrival Card online, which asks for basic personal information, trip details and a health declaration. Obtain an SG Arrival Card on the MyICA phone app or the official ICA website .

All travelers, including residents, who arrive in Singapore from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission must present a yellow fever vaccine certificate. Travelers who do not have a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate are liable to be quarantined at their own cost for up to six days.

Will I get a stamp in my passport?

Travelers passing through immigration at Changi Airport receive an electronic Visit Pass (e-Pass) via email rather than a passport stamp. The e-Pass contains details of the visit pass granted, including the maximum number of days and the last day you're allowed to stay in Singapore.

ETA is a new digital travel permit that is mandatory for citizens of countries that can visit England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland without a visa for short trips. This includes citizens of Singapore.

It will simplify travel to the UK for visiting family and friends of over 40,000 Singaporeans residing in the UK. The ETA also benefits nearly 2.8 million Singaporeans who visit the UK for leisure, business, or study.

This guide offers all the information on the UK ETA for Singaporean citizens, including eligibility, requirements, the application process, and travel implications.

Why is the UK ETA being introduced for Singaporean citizens?

The UK ETA aims to improve the security of the UK border and allow the government more control and oversight over individuals entering the country.

The system seeks to help prevent illegal immigration, thwart organized crime syndicates, and identify potential threats to national security before they even arrive on UK soil.

The ETA is also designed to improve border control and streamline the immigration process for pre-verified, low-risk travelers.

Benefits of the UK ETA for Singaporean Citizens

The ETA is an electronic document that grants permission to pre-screened non-visa nationals to travel to the UK. It is not a visa, so applicants can skip the complex and lengthy acquisition process.

For Singaporean citizens, the UK ETA presents benefits that include the following:

Quick and easy process

Applying for a UK ETA is entirely online and paperless. Singaporean applicants can complete the application in less than 20 minutes. They also do not need to visit consulates or visa offices for an in-person interview or to submit documents.

It generally takes three days to process an ETA application. Travelers will receive the decision, whether approved or rejected, via the email address they provided.

If granted, the ETA will be linked to the passport they used to apply, so there is no need to print it out.

Affordable fee

A UK ETA application costs £10 each. The price is comparable to similar digital travel permits imposed by other countries.

For instance, the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) of the United States (US) costs US$21 (£17).

Australia’s electronic travel authorization (ETA) costs AU$20 (£10), while Canada’s electronic travel authorization (eTA) costs CA$7 (£4).

Once operational, the European Union’s upcoming European Travel Information Authorization System (ETIAS) will cost €7 (£6).

Long validity period

Most digital travel permits are valid for a year to five years or when the passport it is linked to expires.

The UK ETA will be valid for multiple short visits over two years. Travelers only need to apply for an ETA every two years or when their passport expires, whichever comes sooner, not every time they visit the UK.

How the UK ETA system will affect Singaporean travelers

Currently, Singaporeans do not need an ETA to travel to the UK.

However, once the system opens for Singaporean citizens in 2024, they must apply and obtain an approved UK ETA before traveling to the UK.

It is required regardless of the mode of transport used, whether arriving on a flight, on a ship (e.g., as part of a cruise), or over land, such as through the rail tunnel connecting Britain and France.

A UK ETA is valid for the following travel purposes:

  • Short-term stay for less than six months (180 days) for tourism, short-course study, visiting friends and family, and permitted business activities and medical treatments.
  • Short-term stay for up to three months (90 days) on the Creative Worker visa concession
  • Transiting through the UK (i.e., changing planes), whether or not passing through UK border control

ETA Eligibility Guidelines for Singaporean Citizens

To be eligible for an ETA, Singaporeans must meet the following conditions:

  • Be a national of a country that has a visa-waiver status with the UK. Singapore is included in the list of countries whose citizens need an ETA to travel to the UK.
  • Have a biometric passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date from the UK.
  • No intent to stay, work, or study in the UK for longer than six months.
  • No criminal record and past immigration breaches in the UK or elsewhere.

All travelers, including children and babies , will need an ETA before traveling to the UK. Parents and guardians can apply for an ETA on their behalf.

Individuals with a history of immigration breaches, criminal convictions, or incarcerations of more than 12 months in the UK or elsewhere may be denied an ETA. These travelers should consider getting a UK visa instead.

Singaporean citizens planning to stay in the UK for more than six months or to work will still need an appropriate UK visa. The new ETA system does not affect these travelers. The UK visa application and processing will also remain unchanged.

UK ETA Application Requirements for Singaporean Citizens

Singaporean citizens eligible for a UK ETA must prepare the following application requirements:

  • A valid biometric passport issued by Singapore, whose citizens do not need a visa to travel to the UK for short trips.
  • A recent digital passport photo
  • A valid email address
  • A working electronic payment method, such as credit or debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay

How to Apply for a UK ETA

Singaporean citizens can apply for a UK ETA through the official UK government website or app.

The UK ETA application process is entirely online and paperless, so visiting consulates or visa offices is unnecessary. It only takes a few minutes to complete once all the necessary documents and information are ready.

Below is a step-by-step guide on how Singaporean citizens can apply for an ETA.

1. Upload or take a photo of the passport you will use to travel to the UK.

Ensure you include the picture and the two lines of numbers and letters at the bottom.

2. Upload a recent passport photo or take a picture using your device’s camera.

Images should be saved as a jpeg file or with the file extension .jpg. Children aged nine and under will not need to upload a passport photo.

3. Fill in all the required information.

These include personal information (i.e., name, birth date), passport details, employment details, home address, and contact information.

4. Answer questions on security and eligibility.

Like any other UK visitor, Singaporean ETA applicants must truthfully disclose criminal records, past immigration offenses, and any associations with or membership in any unlawful or illegal groups or organizations.

5. Pay for the UK ETA application online.

A UK ETA application costs £10 each. To submit the application, you must pay the fee online using a credit or debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.

After completing the UK ETA online application, travelers will receive a confirmation through the email they provided.

Tips on for Applying for a UK ETA

Applying for an ETA is simple, but there is still room for errors. To avoid common mistakes, follow these guidelines for a swift and efficient UK ETA online application.

  • Provide or capture clear, high-quality photos of your passport and yourself. Ensure the images comply with passport photo specifications and are in full color without filters or effects.
  • Make sure you provide the correct data and are as accurate as possible. Giving false or incorrect information and even withholding information could result in delays or your application being refused.
  • Check beforehand if your online payment method works and if you have enough funds to pay for the application online.
  • Be sure to review and double-check the data you provided in your ETA application before you submit.

After submitting the UK ETA application, travelers can no longer amend or withdraw it.

Should Singaporean travelers need to correct simple mistakes in their ETA application, they can quickly do this by re-submitting the application and paying the fee again.

Processing and Receiving the ETA for Singaporean Nationals

Upon receipt of a UK ETA online application, the system will cross-verify the details submitted against several security databases in the UK and worldwide to check if the applicant is qualified for an ETA.

It typically takes three days (72 hours) for applicants to receive a decision on their ETA application via the email address provided.

Many travelers receive a decision within hours of submitting their application. Still, some applications may take more than three days to receive a decision.

Singaporean citizens are recommended to apply for a UK ETA before booking their travel to the UK to prevent delays or other issues.

If an ETA application is denied, the applicant can choose to complete a new ETA application form and pay the fee again. However, this is only recommended if they can establish the reason for the initial rejection and address it before doing so.

Being denied an ETA does not mean the applicant is banned from traveling to the UK. The alternative to a UK ETA is an appropriate UK visa: a Standard Visitor visa, Temporary Work visa, or Transit visa.

However, getting a visa is a more complicated and longer procedure, so adjust travel plans accordingly.

Traveling with a UK ETA

A UK ETA is digitally linked to an individual’s passport. It is valid for two years, allowing multiple short visits lasting up to six months per visit.

Singaporean travelers must apply for a new ETA after two years or when their passport expires, whichever comes first, to continue being allowed to travel to the UK.

Departure to the UK

Since it is an electronic document, Singaporean travelers don’t need to bring a physical copy of their ETA.

Still, they can print it and carry the paper copy with them or be prepared to show the ETA decision email in their inbox in case of unprecedented circumstances.

For travelers with multiple passports, make sure to travel to the UK with the passport used in the application.

Before boarding a plane, ship, or train, carriers will check if travelers have the appropriate permission-to-travel document by scanning their passports.

Carriers will only allow boarding to Singaporean travelers who can present a valid UK ETA or visa.

Those still waiting on the decision on their ETA applications will also not be permitted to board.

Arriving in the UK

An ETA does not guarantee entry into the UK. Upon arrival, Singaporean citizens with an approved UK ETA must still submit their identity documents to the UK Border Force or go through an electronic passport gate (eGate), if available.

Be prepared to provide proof of onward travel upon request. This typically means presenting a ticket to leave the UK within six months of arrival.

If asked, Singaporean travelers must also show evidence that they have enough funds to support themselves during their entire stay in the UK and their journey home.

Travelers with a valid ETA may still be refused entry into the UK if they fail a border check or meet other entry conditions.

Once past border security, Singaporean citizens with an approved ETA can freely travel between the UK’s four constituent countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Singaporean visitors can use all modes of transportation within the UK, such as trains, ferries, and local flights. Before boarding a ferry or an internal flight within the UK, they only need to present an ID, usually a passport or driving license.

Important Note: A UK ETA is not valid in Ireland or other European countries.

A UK ETA does not allow entry to the Republic of Ireland and other European countries. The UK is not a member of the European Union or the Schengen Common Travel Zone.

Singaporeans visiting Ireland or other European countries must inquire about the country’s entry requirements before booking their travel.

Travelers can check the UK ETA FAQ page for more information.

Do you need a visa for Singapore?

Man gazing out of the window of a boat on the harbour in Singapore

The short answer is yes and no. Passport holders from the below countries (among others) are required to obtain an entry visa before their arrival in Singapore :

People's Republic of Korea

People's Republic of China

For the full list of countries, visit the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority website.

Please note that obtaining an entry visa does not automatically mean you'll be granted entry into Singapore. Upon your arrival, you'll still have to clear immigration with ICA officers the only ones able to grant immigration passes for entry into Singapore. This also applies to passport holders who don't require entry visas.

If you're not travelling from one of the aforementioned countries then you don't need to apply for a Singapore visa, however, all travellers (including ones who need to apply for a visa) need to apply for a Singapore Arrival Card which can be obtained online. Find out more information regarding Singapore Arrival Card requirements and how to apply.

There are a couple of ways to apply for a Singapore visa; online and by visiting an embassy or consulate. Applying for a visa online is by far the easiest option and doesn't require a lot of time to complete.

1. Fill out the online visa application form found on the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority website. Make sure you proofread and double-check that all your information is correct (especially your email address and passport details) before proceeding to the next stage in your application process. Please note that supporting documentation may be needed, in which case an Immigration official will contact you about further requirements.

2. After submitting your eVisa application, you'll need to pay for the visa by filling out your preferred method of payment. The cost of a Singapore visa can depend on the type of visa, pass, or permit you're submitting for, but short-term visitors can expect to pay SGD$30. All Singapore visa payments are non-refundable.

3. Once your visa's been paid for you'll receive a confirmation email stating your application has been submitted. It's common for visa applications to take up to 4 days to be approved. If your application is approved your visa will be emailed in PDF format and will contain a unique identification number needed to gain entry into Singapore. There's no need to print out this document to take with you to the airport as it's already uploaded to Singapore Immigration's system and will automatically appear when you visit a passport control officer as part of the immigration process once you've landed.

If you're a passport holder from a country that doesn't require a visa then you can stay in Singapore for a maximum of 30 days (without requiring a visa).

If you're a passport holder from Australia, New Zealand, Norway, South Korea, Switzerland, the United States, or if you're a European Union citizen, you can stay in Singapore for a maximum of 90 days before having to acquire a visa.

The page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

When applying for a UK visa, knowing what could potentially lead to denial is crucial for strengthening your application and boosting the likelihood of getting approved. Here are some important considerations:

  • Lack of Proper Documentation: All UK visit visa or tourist visa documents you submit must be authentic, complete, and satisfactory. Submitting incorrect or misleading information can cause your application to be rejected immediately and may lead to potential bans on future applications.
  • Lack of Funds: Inadequate proof of financial stability and inability to cover the cost of your stay can lead to rejection. Maintain a minimum bank balance for UK tourist visa of around INR 3,00,000 per applicant.
  • Weak Ties to India: UK authorities may question your intentions to return to India, if you cannot demonstrate strong ties, such as family, property, or employment in India, and, hence, may reject your visa application.
  • Questionable Travel Record: A history of overstaying visas in other countries could be seen as a red flag, suggesting a risk of not adhering to UK’s visa regulations.
  • Intentions Under Scrutiny: Not being able to convincingly explain the reason for your visit and its consistency with your planned activities might arouse suspicion. For example, expressing plans to work on a visa that doesn't allow employment could result in denial.

A Super Priority Visa (SPV) is an optional, paid-for service that customers in select locations around the world can purchase, in addition to the visa fee, to receive a faster decision on their visa application.

This is the first time customers in Hong Kong will be able to take advantage of the optional service.

Customers who choose SPV will usually receive a decision on their UK visa application by the end of the next working day if your appointment is on a weekday. It could take 2 working days after your appointment if your appointment is at the weekend or on a bank holiday.

Customers should be aware that it can take longer than 2 working days, for example if the Home Office needs to ask you for more information.

The fee for the Super Priority Visa Service is currently £1,000, plus the standard fee for the type of visa being applied for.

The processing time for a Standard UK visa is 15 working days, although this excludes evenings, weekends or national, public holidays, and in some instances applications may take longer.

The very latest visa decision waiting times for each visa category are published on gov.uk . This also includes additional information about the priority services for those applying outside of the UK.

Speaking of the launch announcement, the Consul General to Hong Kong & Macau Brian Davidson CMG said:
