Pack This! The flat, easy-packing travel night light

flat travel night light

I’ve found that traveling with a virtually flat LED nightlight like this to be a real sanity–and potentially-stubbed toe-saver. It also helps the kids settle down a little faster when we don’t need the bright lights on up to the very last moment that everyone is in bed. And because there are enough things to remember to pack for our family of five already, I try to always keep it in my travel toiletry kit in between trips. It takes up almost no space there and, unlike many other night lights, there is no glass light bulb to break as I sit on my suitcase stuffed with souvenirs.

travel night light

Of course, if I happen to stay at the hotel ahead of your visit, there is a small chance there might actually be a night light awaiting you–I have been known to accidentally leave them behind now and then. For that reason, I recommend getting a pack of two or more so you’ll have a back up ready to go. 😉

Best Travel Night Light Reviews in 2022

Nightlights are beneficial, both for kids and adults. They can illuminate fixtures, stairways, and potential obstacles to guarantee your safety while walking to the bathroom at night.

Also, they can illuminate a kid’s room to eliminate the kid’s fear of the dark and to ensure a mom’s safety while making late night visits.

Apart from using a nightlight at home, you could consider getting one that is best suited for traveling.

Such a nightlight should be portable , which means that it should have a battery power option, and feature a size and weight that will favor you while traveling.

Given the variety of nightlights available for you to choose from, getting the best travel nightlight is not easy.

To help you make the right decision, this guide consists of the best travel nightlights available on the market today. Read on:

Benefits of Using a Night Light When Travelling

1. Better visibility of the surrounding

A travel nightlight can offer better visibility of the surroundings you are not accustomed to.

Come to think about it; In new places, you are likely to step on obstacles or trip over furniture and other items since you are not used to such environments.

To protect that from occurring, a nightlight can cast a soft glow that will let you view the surroundings without the fear of waking the people you are sharing the room.

2. Help children sleep

Babies are most likely to be insecure while sleeping in new environments. They could end up waking up traumatized or disturbed in the middle of the night.

To prevent that from happening, you could opt to get a travel nightlight.

Its dim illumination provides a sense of security by enabling kids to view the surroundings and be sure that they are sleeping in a safe place.

3. Assist with toilet trips

When traveling, you will need a nightlight to assist with toilet trips.

The reason behind this is that you do not want to wake the people you are sharing a room with, using the bright light of a flashlight.

To avoid that, the soft glow of a nightlight can make it possible to walk through new environments without the fear of hitting onto something or disrupting the sleep of the people you are sharing a room with.

How to Choose the Best Travel Night Light?

how to choose the right travel night light for kids and adults

1. Dimensions of the nightlight

The best travel nightlight should be portable. Therefore, look for a compact nightlight.

Such a nightlight should feature dimensions that will fit into your luggage bag or backpack without straining you.

Moreover, it should be lightweight and designed in such a way that it will not add much weight to your luggage for convenience while traveling.

2. Power requirements

Nightlights are of two types: Battery-powered nightlights and plug-in nightlights.

When looking for the best travel nightlight, I would recommend that you opt for the battery-powered models.

Besides, you could get a plug-in nightlight but opt for one with a battery backup.

The reason I would recommend that is to ensure that you are sorted out should you be in a place without a power outlet.

Once you get a battery-powered model , be sure that the batteries can last for long.

Alternatively, get spare batteries to ensure that you will always be sorted out should the batteries run out.

3. Materials

Which materials is the travel nightlight made of? The best model must be made of durable and safe materials.

Therefore, if you are getting a nightlight that is made of plastics, look for one that doesn’t contain lead, latex, BPA, or phthalates.

Also, ensure that the nightlight highlights a solid build to assure you of long-lasting performance, without the fear of break downs or stopping to work.

4. Pet or child-friendliness

If your travel nightlight is for kids or homes with pets, I would recommend that you purchase a kid and pet-friendly nightlight.

In simple terms, get a nightlight with bulbs that remain cool to the touch to protect small hands from getting burnt.

Also, get a model that emits a glare-free night to protect the eyes from harm.

A nightlight that is made of shatterproof materials is also worth it, while it must not contain small parts likely to be swallowed by the kid or pet.

And, if the nightlight is for accompanying kids when sleeping, get a model that features plushy and soft materials to allow kids to cuddle with it.

  • Check top comfortable night lights for baby !

5. Bulb type

Different nightlights use different types of bulbs. Some nightlights use LED bulbs, incandescent bulbs, CFLs, or halogen bulbs.

When looking for the best travel nightlight, I would recommend one that uses LEDs.

LEDs are long-lasting types of bulbs, which means that they can last for years without requiring you to spend lots of cash to replace them.

Additionally, LEDs emit an eye-friendly light to protect the eyes from harm.

Best of all, LEDs do not get hot after hours of illumination, which means that you can get them when looking for the best nightlight for homes with kids or pets.

6. Brightness level

The best travel nightlight should provide illumination with adjustable brightness.

After all, you do not want a nightlight that will provide a light that is too bright since this would affect your sleep.

Still, a nightlight that delivers a light that is too dim could provide insufficient illumination, which could make it difficult for you to see around.

Therefore, opt for a nightlight with adjustable brightness to let you customize the brightness to suit your needs.

There you have it; the best travel nightlights available on the market today.

For a peaceful night of sleep and to assure your kids that all is fine while spending a night in new places, I would recommend that you buy one of the reviewed products because of the affordable prices and for the best value for money.

Should Kids Sleep With Night-Lights?

A note on sound machine night-lights.

Parents / Alexander Huang

Finding the right nighttime routine to help my little one fall asleep wasn’t easy. I’ve worked my way through countless night-lights and bedtime routines, and it wasn’t until my daughter was 5 years old that I finally found the right combination that ensured she not only fell asleep in her room but also remained there instead of sneaking into mine. I ultimately chose the Hatch Rest+ 2nd Gen, which integrates a sound machine and a night-light. My daughter likes the bird sounds, and I like the uninterrupted sleep .

Night-lights that emit a small amount of light can be helpful for both you and your children . According to  Michelle Caraballo, MD , a pediatric pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist, “darkness at bedtime triggers the body’s natural release of melatonin, helping to regulate the body’s circadian rhythm and allowing your child to keep a regular sleep schedule.”

When picking the best night-light for your child’s room, consider the power source, smart connectivity options, whether the brightness or colors are adjustable, and whether it boasts any additional features like a sound machine, music, or projectors. To create our list of recommendations, we asked pediatricians and sleep experts to provide input that not only guided our initial selection of products but aided in narrowing the field to the best night-lights to help your little one fall asleep.

Best Overall

Vtech v-hush bc8213 mini sleep trainer soother speaker, why we like it.

The VTech V-Hush Soother is an all-in-one nighttime solution that’s packed with functions that make it a great long-term investment. It incorporates adjustable lights, a projector, a sound machine, and app-supported controls . It also offers dual power options through a plug-in cord or rechargeable battery. The compact design makes it a portable solution that our tester felt made it stand out compared to the Hatch Rest they normally use with their 3.5-month-old child.

Our tester especially enjoyed using the sound machine function and the warm white light on a dimmer setting for late-night check-ins. They appreciated the shusher noise and wide range of sounds and colors: There ar e 10 stories, 10 classical tunes, 10 lullabies, 10 natural sounds, and over 250 color options . You can adjust the brightness and use the breath/pulse function to shift between colors automatically. The night-light also has a timer that shuts it off automatically. The proprietary companion app supports connecting other devices for playback through the speakers.

What Parents Say

“I would definitely bring this soother on weekend trips or even longer because it is much smaller than our Hatch, but has more functions than our smaller hand-held sound machine.” —Marco, dad of a 3.5-month-old.

But Take Note

Overall, our tester loved the V-Hush but noted that the one area where it underperforms is with the app. When trying to manage the Bluetooth control panel, the app can glitch. However, it has on-device control buttons, which our tester felt were more intuitive to use than the Hatch’s.

The Details:

  • Dimensions: 6.38 x 5.16 x 5 inches
  • Power source: Electric plug, rechargeable battery
  • Apps and connectivity: Bluetooth connection, proprietary app

Best Budget

Jandcase night light.

If you simply need a plug-in night-light that offers sufficient ambient light to give little ones peace of mind and helps them fall asleep quicker, this two-pack set from JandCase is modestly priced and exactly what you need. It’s a literal plug-and-play device that requires no Bluetooth connectivity or instruction manual to operate it.

It relies on light sensors to automatically power on once the surrounding area grows dark. But as soon as you turn on a light, the night-light shuts off. A soft yellow light provides a low glow without being overbearing.

“Honestly, I want more of these just to illuminate the hallways and dark areas of the house at night.” — Brittany, aunt to a 3-year-old niece.

The no-frills functionality may not appeal to shoppers seeking more enhanced options like noise machines, color options, or app control.

  • Dimensions: 1.85 x 2.05 x 1.61 inches
  • Power source: Plug-in
  • Apps and connectivity: N/A

Best With Remote

Lumipets silicone puppy night light.

Lumipets pairs the soft, tactile experience of a toy with the soft warm glow of a night-light to make bedtime something kids will look forward to. Our tester used this night-light with their 6-year-old son who is “confident in the existence of monsters and their desire to visit him at night.” What sets this device apart from the competition is that it’s a squishable silicone night-light that allows kids to control the color choice simply by squeezing it .

Our tester’s son loved the cute dog design and soft texture. Parents can opt for the included wireless remote to scroll between nine colors or set it to color-change mode. The rechargeable USB battery can run for 12 hours. There’s a timer you can set for 15, 30, or 60 minutes. Also, you can adjust through 12 brightness levels to create a more ambient light setting. Choose from 16 adorable creatures.

“The night-light was the perfect amount of soft brightness. It gave my son a sense of security, but wasn’t so bright that it kept him awake.” —Lauren, mom of a 6-year-old.

The adorable faces and squishy softness may delay bedtime because little ones want to play. As our tester shared, “my son and his brothers would play with the night-light and sometimes it would get mixed up with their other toys. Come night time, it was a rush to figure out where the night-light had been left.”

  • Dimensions: 5 x 5 x 6 inches
  • Power source: USB rechargeable
  • Apps and connectivity: Touch, wireless remote

Best Portable

Munchkin light my way nightlight.

Kids will appreciate that this portable owl night-light from Munchkin is designed with their needs in mind. The small format is perfect for smaller hands and features simple controls that are ideal for preschoolers who are still building dexterity and fine motor skills. Our tester loved that this was a simple, straightforward night-light with just a single control button to turn the light on and off.

Plus, it has an automatic 20-minute timer that shuts off automatically, so caregivers don’t have to sneak into bedrooms to turn it off—and risk waking up tiny snoozers. The smaller size will make some kids want to cuddle with this little device, and parents can rest easy knowing that there are  no cords that pose a safety risk .

“I knew he would love that he can hold it and turn it on and off himself and love the owl design, but he loves it more than I thought.” —Holly, mom of a 3-year-old.

This is purely a night-light with a soft, warm white LED output. Also, even though our tester felt the battery life was long, it relies on three AAA batteries.

  • Dimensions: 2.4 x 4.1 x 6.1 inches
  • Power source: 3 AAA batteries
  • Apps and connectivity: N/A

Best With Amazon Alexa

Amazon echo glow.

Speaking from personal experience, there’s nothing more annoying than switching between apps to manage all of the connected devices in my home. For those that rely on Alexa for IoT (Internet of Things) management, the Echo Glow from Amazon is a simple smart light that integrates into Alexa so you can use one smart assistant to manage all (or most) of your devices.

The Echo Glow’s portable size of less than 4 inches in width, height, and depth makes it a compact solution that doesn’t take up much space on bedside tables or dressers. You can use either the Amazon Echo app or simply speak to Alexa to control the colors or play music or soothing sounds through the integrated speaker.

“We are already an Alexa home and it’s a great addition to the Echo if you have small kids.” —Jessica Mahgerefteh, mom of 3.5-year-old.

The Echo Glow lacks a built-in microphone. So, if you don’t have an Alexa-compatible device to link it to, the Alexa functionality is unusable. Our tester also experienced connectivity issues: “We have gotten some error messages where Alexa says she is having trouble responding,” which makes the Wi-Fi-enabled function unreliable.

  • Dimensions: 3.9 x 3.9 x 3.2 inches
  • Apps and connectivity: Alexa-enabled, WiFi

Best Customizable

Hatch rest+ 2nd gen portable dream machine.

The Hatch brand has garnered a loyal fanbase (myself included) thanks to its multitude of sleep and soothing products that just work. I use the Hatch Rest+ 2nd Gen and the Hatch Rest Go with my daughter and can attest to them being portable, effective at helping my daughter stay asleep (in her own bed!), and easy to use . The Rest+ 2nd Gen is the latest rollout from the brand and is packed with features, including night-light, alarm clock, time to rise, white noise, and bedtime stories. It’s truly portable thanks to the wireless charging base. You’ll get up to eight hours of use on a single charge.

Our tester loved that operation is fairly easy when you use the app—although there are on-device buttons to turn it on or off and toggle between modes, volume levels, and light adjustments. As is standard with Hatch devices, the Rest+ Gen 2 has a companion app that must be paired with the device when you first set it up. This offers enhanced functionality rather than relying solely on the device's control panel.

“I like how multi-functional it is. I like how its capacity changes as your kid grows.” —Cecily, mom of a 2.5-year-old.

Some of the Hatch’s functionality requires a paid annual subscription to access. If you want to play music or stories, these features can’t be fully enjoyed without being a subscriber—although you can test drive a sample selection in the app before committing. Additionally, it’s almost essential that everyone has the app since the on-device control panel can be clunky.

Best Plug-In

Eufy lumi plug-in night light.

If you have multiple areas in your home that need goof-proof illumination at night, this six-pack of automatic sensor-based plug-in night-lights is an affordable and obvious solution. There’s virtually nothing to figure out except which plug you want to use it in. Each plug-in night-light offers dusk-to-dawn warm white LED motion-activated output.

Because it’s unobtrusive and simple , it can serve as a companion option for parents who already have a standalone white noise machine and don’t want to purchase a night-light with duplicate functionality. But if you don’t want to dedicate critical outlet space to these night-lights, Eufy also makes a multipack stick-on version that gives you more placement flexibility. However, that one requires three AAA batteries.

“We’ve been long-time fans of Eufy products, and this product is no exception with this brand.” —Kimberly, mom of a 22-month-old.

Because these are motion-activated, location really matters. Our tester found that when placed in areas that had natural blind spots, the lights were less effective than in areas where the motion sensor was unobstructed.

Best With Sound Machine

Yogasleep travel mini sound machine with night light.

A truly portable design makes the YogaSleep Travel Mini ideal for helping light the way for little ones at home or when the family travels. The sound machine function is great for creating the right amount of white noise or muffling distracting outside sounds in cities. The small size makes this ideal for kids to manage independently , and the included carrying strap supports the travel-friendly angle.

The YogaSleep Mini features a simple design, is easy for kids to master, and includes six sounds and a dimmable light. It relies on a USB-rechargeable battery, which makes operation easy. You’ll get up to eight hours of use on a single charge. This is a fairly affordable option that can either serve to complement a more robust device at home or be a stand-in option when traveling.

“Favorite thing per my children was the smallness of it and easy to use.” —Sabrina, mom of an 8- and 10-year-old.

Although there is a warm white LED, the output isn’t as bright as competitors. Even though there are three dimmer settings, our tester felt that the overall brightness was significantly lower than with competitors like Hatch.

  • Dimensions: 2.5 x 2.5 x 1.77 inches
  • Power source: USB-rechargeable

Best Projector

Skip hop moonlight & melodies baby soother.

A soothing starry night projector display combines with music to make the dark less scary. This simple tabletop night-light features a control panel that’s easy to navigate , even for little fingers. Along with brightness adjustment , you can also set a timer for 15, 30, and 60-minute increments.

There’s a music and white noise function with four songs or four soothing sounds to choose from. Our tester liked that this owl design was fairly compact —not taking up too much space but still sturdy enough to be durable. While we’re highlighting the owl, this night-light is available in other designs, like an elephant.

“The night-light was very helpful at night since the music is soothing for kids.” —Irianna, mom to a 1-year-old and 7-year-old.

This isn’t a dealbreaker, but the projector may create a blurry output given the small footprint on this device. Additionally, there is no companion app for remote or wireless connectivity.

  • Dimensions: 4.5 x 6 x 5.5 inches
  • Pillowfort Starry Globe Kids’ Nightlight : 360-degree pattern projection creates a soothing lighting effect for any nursery or children’s bedroom. However, this simple lamp relies on a basic on/off switch and the ceramic globe may be risky for younger kids who might be tempted to touch it.
  • G Keni Nursery Night Light : This affordable night-light has an impressive battery that can last up to 65 hours (on the lowest light setting) and a simple touch-top interface. Unfortunately, there are no other features or light colors, and the brightest setting is still dimmer than competitors.
  • Wiz Mobile Portable Light : A simple portable night-light that supports beautiful color gradients has a long battery life, and features Bluetooth connectivity is an alluring prospect. However, it's expensive considering it lacks any other functionality.

Our Testing Process

To create our list of recommendations, we worked with experts to determine the key considerations that are most important when using a night-light. We then scoured the market to find the best options to send home with testers and their kids. We asked our testers to review the following criteria:

  • Design: Night-lights can range from huggable, portable options that find their way into your child’s bed, to more traditional tabletop models. We asked our testers to consider whether the design enhanced or hindered functionality and if it appealed to younger audiences.
  • Functionality: Some night-lights are 360-degree solutions that incorporate white noise, music, projectors, timers, and even okay-to-wake functions. We asked our testers to consider how intuitive the functionality was and whether it was easy to switch between modes, adjust colors and brightness levels, or even set timers.
  • Brightness/Color: Some night-lights only offer a white color output, while others support multiple RGB hues. We also asked our testers to rate the brightness. And, if applicable, were they able to control the brightness or was it preset to a static level.
  • Controls: Night-lights can either have a built-in control panel or include a companion app for caregivers to manage remotely. We asked our testers to consider how easily they could access and manage the controls. Likewise, if an app was available, was it easier to operate the night-light through the app or directly through the device?
  • Power Source: Some of the night-lights we asked our testers to rate supported wireless charging or were portable. If USB charging or traditional batteries were the main power source, we asked testers to rate the battery life.

We consulted pediatricians and sleep experts to find out more about kids' sleep patterns and the best practices when using night-lights for kids:

  • David Suhrbier, DO , a neurologist and sleep medicine expert with Valley Children’s Healthcare in Madera, California. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Midwestern University—Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his fellowship in child neurology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
  • Michelle Caraballo, MD, a pediatric pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist at Children’s Health and an associate professor at the University of Texas Southwestern.
  • Natalie Nevares , mother of two and founder of Mommywise, a national in-home sleep training support service for parents of babies and children.

Factors to Consider When Buying a Night-Light

  • Brightness and color: Some night-lights only offer a warm yellow output, while others can toggle between various RGB colors. Dimmable lights are ideal to prevent a too-bright output from delaying sleep. Color choices can be nice, but caregivers should be mindful that some colors are proven to interrupt or delay sleep. Dr. Suhrbier advises that “white or blue light will negatively impact the child’s circadian rhythm, which is the timing of when the body is awake and when it should be asleep.” Instead, he recommends a “night-light utilizing red light at 50 [lumens] or less” placed farther from the child’s bed to minimize disruption.
  • Power source: Night-lights can rely on traditional batteries, USB-rechargeable batteries, or a plug-in connection. There are pros and cons to each option. USB-rechargeable models tend to be more portable. A traditional battery eliminates cords that can pose a strangulation hazard for smaller kids. A traditional plug-in option eliminates having to remember to recharge a device but can limit portability.
  • App controls and smart connectivity: A companion app or smart integration like Alexa compatibility is nice since it lets caregivers remotely manage settings or timers without risking waking a sleeping child. However, connectivity issues like dropped Bluetooth signals or crash-prone apps can be frustrating. If you’re interested in an app-based night-light, be sure there’s a control panel on the device that provides access to all the core functions.
  • Sound machine and other extras: Some kids require more than ambient lighting to fall asleep. In my daughter’s case, she needs chirping birds along with soft light. So, features like sound machines, music, or even audiobooks and projectors can all be value-added features that take the stress out of bedtime. However, these functions sometimes come at a premium. This is the case with Hatch’s Rest+ 2nd Gen, which requires an annual subscription to gain full access to music and story options.

Within the expert community, there’s a nearly unanimous agreement that a dark, cool, and quiet room is the optimal sleeping condition for babies, children, and adults. However, even experts understand that this may not be realistic when dealing with late-night feedings and diaper changes, transitioning a toddler to a big kid bed , or simply trying to convince a worried child to sleep in their own bed because they’re confident that monsters might be under it.

According to Dr. Caraballo, “a dim night-light is a perfectly reasonable way to comfort a child who is afraid of the dark and to prevent accidental trips or falls if a child needs to get up during the night for any reason.”

Nevares agrees but also adds a practical consideration: “As a parent, your baby or child might wake up in the middle of the night and cry for you. If the room is pitch black, how can you see your baby or child to help them with no night-light?”

Dr. Suhrbier cautions that controlling night-light brightness is critical to avoid interrupting the circadian rhythm. He notes that “the lowest level of lumens (the amount of visible light to the human eye) should be used. A lumen count of 50L or less is recommended.” Dr. Caraballo also supports dimmable features but recommends keeping the light low to the ground and away from the bed or crib to further minimize the chances of sleep cycle disruption.

Officially, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) only fully endorses the use of night-lights for children who struggle with night terrors. But with the rise of multifunctional night-lights, the advice can get a bit murkier. The AAP is less supportive of sound machines and recommends stricter guidelines, such as limiting audio output to 50 decibels or lower for babies and setting it on a timer rather than letting it play all night.

Still, research points to the benefits of white noise, which is especially helpful for people who live in noisier areas. Even in testing, many of our participants lived in large cities where everything from neighbors to routine street traffic and even blaring sirens can delay falling asleep or disrupt sleep patterns. A 2021 study published in the journal Sleep Medicine supports implementing white noise as a way to drown out those distracting sounds (the study was performed on adult respondents).

Dorian Smith-Garcia is a commerce, health, and parenting writer at Parents , and a mom of one 6-year-old daughter. She is a big fan of the Hatch Rest+ 2nd Gen, and the Happiest Baby Snoobie for helping her daughter sleep through the night and stay in her bed.

Baby Night Light Roundup

With a newborn, you’re going to be up in the middle of the night.

A lot, I’m afraid.

You have to strike a balance between running into walls in the dark (which you’ll do anyway) and over-stimulating your baby (and yourself) with a bright, glaring light.

Research tells us that white and blue light wavelengths suppress melatonin (the sleep hormone) the most, which is the  opposite of what you want at night. Longer wavelength light, such as amber light, interferes with your sleep the least. And yet many night light makers use blue light.  Go figure.

I much prefer a night “lamp,” which is a cordless, rechargeable lamp you can walk around with. Sadly, there are few-to-none out there like this…

**We’re starting to see many more baby night light combos these days that integrate a night light with other features, like a noise machine and/or a humidifier and/or a clock and/or a speaker (SO many different iterations…). We’re super into this, especially because the top two manufacturers in this department — Hatch and Yogasleep (formerly Marpac) — make really high quality products that can last for years to come.

Here are your best options at different price points:

Munchkin Light My Way Baby Night Light ~$12 — Economy Pick (Tie)

The perfect night light for toddlers — or moms trying to nurse and change diapers in the middle of the night. We like this night light because it turns off after 20 minutes (if you pass out before you shut it off) and is cool to the touch. (It’s battery operated.)

A Cheap Alternative: Plug-in Night Lights

These won’t necessarily throw off enough light for middle-of-the-night nursing sessions or diaper changes (although they might, depending on your space and your eyesight), but the Sycees Wall Plug-ins ($15 for a 6 pack) are VERY handy to have around. They turn on and off automatically and have definitely saved me from many stumbles during the wee hours. We’ve kept them in the hallways, bathroom, etc. long past the newborn days. (Note that you can’t turn these on/off, so if you keep them in your bedroom, they’ll be on all night.)

LumiPets Portable Baby Night Light ~$24 — Economy Pick (Tie)

Another favorite is the LumiPets Night Light. Yes, this thing is designed for little kids, but works great for parents as a nursing/up-at-night light. You can choose from 9 different colors (including red, yay!) and more than a dozen animals/designs. This soft/squishy silicone night light also has different brightness levels, can be turned on/off by tapping (this is optional), has a long-lasting rechargeable battery, and has different auto shut-off options.

Yogasleep Duet ~$41

One step down from the Hatch Baby Rest (see below) is the Duet from Yogasleep (formerly Marpac) — it’s a combined night light and white noise machine that also has wireless speaker functionality (a neat though not super-usable feature, IMO — the quality is a bit tinny). It gives off a warm glow that’s just right, and has a pretty impressive array of noise offerings (30 in all, some white and pink noises and some songs/sounds that *actually aren’t annoying/tinny-sounding). At 4.5″ tall, this is a sleek and unimposing night light that doesn’t scream “baby.”

yogasleep duet

If you want a night light/humidifier combo:

If you are specifically looking for a night light that can also serve as a humidifier, the Friday Baby 3-in-1 (~$49) also works as a cool-mist humidifier and an aromatherapy diffuser. Like all Frida Baby products, this is a high-quality pick that functions well, though the water tank size may not be big enough depending on your space (it’s advertised for a 12-hour run time to cover a 320 square foot space). For some, it’s exactly what they need, but unless you really desire the humidifier and/or diffuser combo, you probably don’t need to spend 50 bucks on this exact night light…

Friday Baby 3 in 1

Hatch Baby Rest ~$69 — Editor’s Choice

It’s a night light, sound machine, and OK to wake indicator all in one — a hat trick! — that’s controlled by your smart phone. We love it . And the new version — the Hatch Baby Rest+ (~$89) — tacks on an audio monitor, too… it’s a true multitasker.

Casper Glow Light ~$129 — Upgrade/Luxury Pick

OK, OK, I know — it’s $$$$. But this thing is so cool . It’s portable, easy to use, and practical.

casper glow light

The Glow rests on a wireless charging base and turns on and off when you flip it over. You can control the Glow’s brightness by rotating the light — dial clockwise for a brighter glow and counterclockwise to dim. It has an automatic dimmer (set for about 45 minutes), and uses warm light only (no bad-for-your-sleep blue light).

It also has a light-to-wake function that might replace your alarm clock (although, you probably won’t want or need this feature for at least a few months, given that your baby will be waking you up plenty …). The Glow emits a warm escalating light in the AM to wake you up more gently (ahem, “naturally” ) than whatever annoying sound you have set on your phone alarm. [See the video showing all the features here (you have to scroll down).]

crib night light

You can operate the Glow through an app, but we think it’s easier to just use the device itself to control the light (you know, like, manually ).

It’s TOO expensive, yes, but if you feel like splurging in the sleep wellness department, this is a great choice. You’ll definitely use it a lot longer than a more standard baby night light, anyways.

The Very Best Nightlights

Portrait of Erin Schwartz

Best star projector

Nightlights are indispensable for parents and makers of late-night trips in dark apartments alike — a good nightlight should, in the words of former Strategist senior editor Anthony Rotunno , glow “just enough to guide me — but not so brightly that it jolts me out of semi-sleep.” An inexpensive, plug-in nightlight is often all you need, but a bunch of higher-tech options have hit the market in recent years, with features optimized for a variety of uses: baby monitor, white-noise machine, and portable lamp all in one.

What we’re looking for

Dimmability.

Although not strictly necessary for a nightlight, dimmable light levels allow you to customize exactly how brightly you want your nightlight to glow; some options on this list can even emit enough light to work as a bedside lamp . We’ve noted which lamps are dimmable and which have a handful of preset brightness levels as opposed to smooth dimming.

Power source

Battery-powered, USB-rechargeable, and plug-in lamps all appear on this list. There are advantages to either style — a rechargeable lamp is portable and can live anywhere, whether or not there’s an outlet nearby, but it does add the extra task to your queue of remembering to recharge it when it burns out. A plug-in lamp offers less flexibility, but you never have to worry about it running out of battery halfway through a late-night trip to the bathroom or while you’re soothing a baby back to sleep.

Extra features

Depending on your nightlight’s intended use, extra features may be helpful — an auto-shutoff, Wi-Fi-enabled controls, even an audio baby monitor. We’ve listed each nightlight’s additional tech capacities; though extra features are nice to have, a simple dawn-to-dusk sensor is more than enough for lighting the way for nighttime trips.

VAVA Home VA-CL009 Night Light

Dimmable: Yes | Power source: Rechargeable | Extra features: Made of toy-grade materials; one-hour auto-shutoff

Herman Miller creative director Kelsey Keith listed this egg-shaped nightlight as an item she’d include if she could redo her baby registry: she likes that it’s “dimmable, portable, rechargeable, and relatively cheap.” It’s a great nightlight for any household: The light has a warm white and color-changing mode, and it is made of toy-grade materials so it’s especially useful for families with children, from toddlers who gnaw on anything in reach to older kids. “This nightlight didn’t sear my eyeballs during bleary-eyed night feedings,” Keith writes, and a year later, her daughter was “completely entranced by it as a toy.”

Best nightlight for bathrooms

Ausaye Color-Changing Mushroom Nightlight

Dimmable: No | Power source: Plug-in | Extra features: Dawn-to-dusk sensor

Rotunno received this inexpensive, color-changing mushroom nightlight as a gift and gives it glowing reviews. “During the day, it looks like a little toadstool sprouting from my wall, but at night, when I turn off the rest of the lights, is when the thing really shines,” he writes. It plugs into the wall and comes in five colors, including a color-changing and warm-white option, and has a dawn-to-dusk sensor to shut on and off automatically depending on daylight.

Best character nightlight

Miffy LED Night Light

Dimmable: Yes | Power source: Plug-in | Extra features: Dawn-to-dusk sensor

“I’ve had my Miffy nightlight since I moved to my very first big girl apartment in London in September,” says Strategist writer Rachael Griffiths. The lamp, shaped like the Dick Bruna children’s-book character , “has the perfect nightlight glow for getting cozy in bed and watching a film — it gives the same level of ambience as a few candles, and it’s quite simply really, really cute.” Strategist senior editor Jen Trolio uses a larger version of the Miffy lamp for her kids; though it’s technically a floor lamp, its dimmability means it works as a nightlight as well at a lower illumination. Griffiths especially appreciates a 20-minute dimmer option where the light gradually fades to dark: It’s “great if you’re partial to a before-bed TikTok scroll but want to stop yourself from lying there for an hour,” she says.

Miffy Floor Light

Best multipurpose nightlight

Hatch Rest+ Baby Sound Machine

Dimmable: Yes | Power source: Rechargeable | Extra features: Sound machine, Wi-Fi enabled, audio monitor, alarm clock

One of our favorite gifts for new moms , the Hatch Rest+ is an all-in-one machine: dimmable nightlight, white-noise machine, audio baby monitor, and gentle, toddler-friendly alarm clock. “If you’re looking for a multifunctional gift that will be used daily for years, the Hatch Rest+ is a solid choice,” says Miriam Cohen of the blog the Very Best Baby Stuff . The light has warm-white and color-changing settings, and it can be controlled via app. Blogger and author Laura Izumikawa also loves that it’s portable: “Our girls fall asleep to it, and we always bring it along with us for trips,” she says. “For long road trips, it’s easy to just tuck in the back seat to help our kids relax and fall asleep.”

Best red-light nightlight

Kulala Sleep Lamp

Dimmable: Three brightness levels | Power source: Plug-in | Extra features: Baby-safe varnish

“This red-light-emitting lamp has become one of the most important pieces in our night routine since my daughter was born last fall,” says Strategist senior editor Simone Kitchens. The lamp is made of maple and finished in baby-safe varnish, and it emits an array of red-light wavelengths designed specifically to support sleep. It has three brightness levels, which can be selected using a simple and quiet touch control. “Early on, in the first few months, when I was getting up multiple times to feed and change her, we ended up leaving the lamp on all night. I liked being able to peer into the bassinet and check on her without having to use my former nightlight — my blue-light-emitting phone,” Kitchens says. “Now, at bedtime, her room is filled with a gentle red light; a calming cue, for anyone really, that it’s time to go to sleep.”

Hooga Book Light

Dimmable: Three brightness levels | Power source: Rechargeable | Extra features: None

For a more analog option, Trolio uses these Hooga book lights, which are clipped onto each level of her kids’ bunk beds and could also be affixed to a bathroom shelf or bedside table — or carried from room to room like an old-timey candlestick. Writer Molly McGhee calls the Hooga book light a “true game changer” of a reading light: “The amber hue keeps the blue-light blues at bay,” she says. “Plus, I don’t wake my partner up while I’m reading, and I can wind down without feeling like I’m staring at a screen.”

Best whimsical nightlight

Pampshade Croissant Lamp

Dimmable: No | Power source: One AA battery | Extra features: None

For a delightfully low-tech option, Pampshade lamps by designer (and former baker) Yukiko Morita are real, hollowed-out bread products with an LED light nested inside. (They’re covered in an anti-bacterial and anti-mold coating, so they won’t decay or attract pests.) The battery-powered croissant lamp, which diffuses its glow through its laminated sheets of pastry, makes a good portable nightlight; Strategist writer Dominique Pariso also uses the brand’s plug-in baguette lamp, below, as her nighttime lighting, along with a 3-D-printed Wooj lamp.

Editor’s note: Prices from Yukiko Morita are an estimated conversion of Japanese yen to USD. Shipping to the U.S. is estimated to cost about $25 to $35.

Pampshade Baguette Lamp

Dimmable: Yes | Power source: Rechargeable | Extra features: Timer

Strategist contributor Chantel Tattoli loves this detailed star projector as a nightlight for her daughter. It’s “the economy model by Takayuki Ohira, the planetarium designer who also created the best (most accurate, most starry) home planetarium on the market,” which sells for tens of thousands of dollars. “For less than one percent of that price tag, the Homestar Pro produces a high-resolution and surprisingly affecting theater … We may not be under a night sky, but the projection is so soothing we might as well be,” she says. A night light can soon become a child’s best friend, and parents will soon grow fond of it, too, considering it’ll help them get some much-desired sleep themselves. Night lights can help children and babies who are fighting sleep , are afraid of the dark or are partial to a midnight toilet break.

Looks matter, and you’ll want the night light to blend in nicely in a newly decorated bedroom or nursery , but there are a few things to consider before purchasing a night light.

Firstly, how child-friendly is the light? Will they be able to use it independently? Is it portable or does it need to be plugged into the mains to operate? Portable options will give you freedom, particularly if you’re holidaying or spending a weekend with the grandparents.

You should also consider battery life, especially if the night is going to be used daily. Although, we prefer those that offer a charging facility, as they are kinder to the planet. We also recommend finding night lights that give the option of adjusting the brightness and come with a timer. The latter will be hugely beneficial, and less draining on the battery, saving you from having to sneak in to turn it off. We also praised extra handy features, such as light projections or sounds.

It’s important to flag that experts believe the best possible way for a child to sleep is in pitch darkness, as this encourages melanin to do its work, but this doesn’t always work for every family.

How we tested

We tested a range of night lights over the course of two weeks, with the help of five-month-old and three-year-old testers. We used the lights to help with naps and overnight sleeping. We looked at running time, practicality, price, looks and any additional features, such as different light modes and soothing sounds.

The best kids’ night lights for 2023 are:

  • Best overall kids’ night light – Moonie rabbit with a light: £55.95, Babymori.com
  • Best portable kids’ night light – Purflo dream cloud musical portable night light: £20, Purflo.com
  • Best kids’ night light for projections – Angelcare pabobo underwater effects projector whale: £45, Jojomamanbebe.co.uk
  • Best kids’ night light for travel – Chicco next2stars, neutral: £24.99, Mamasandpapas.com

Moonie rabbit with a light

Moonie Rabbit.jpg

  • Best : Overall
  • Batterly life : Nine hours on a full charge
  • Sounds : Comes with five sound options
  • Dimensions : 30cm x 15cm x 10cm
  • Number of light colours : Seven

Practical and pretty doesn’t always prevail with baby essentials, but this is Polish brand Moonie’s mission: a family company that’s all about beautiful, simple and well-designed sleep aids and toys. This rabbit is adorable, soft to the touch and thanks to the light and sound module hidden in its tummy, rather clever too. While it’s the most expensive, it offers plenty, and we love that you can use the ears to tie to a cot or stroller. Charging by the USB cable provided, it takes around 3 hours to fully charge, providing around 9 hours of working time.

Everything feels rather gentle with Moonie which is just what you want to settle a baby or child fighting sleep. There are seven soft colours, and five different soothing white and pink noise sounds, mimicking the frequencies of heartbeats, wind, rustling leaves and steady rain – plus there are also more traditional lullabies. It’s incredibly intuitive to use. Squeeze his back to turn it on, and double squeeze to go through the sound library, or hold down to change the volume. You can do all these things without removing the unit.

However, if you want to change the light modes (there are five to choose from) you’ll need to take it out through the side zip. Our favourite is the simple mood light, offering a warm light that you can choose to pulsate. There’s also a built-in smart cry detector, so it’ll start up when it hears any sounds of distress and will automatically shut off after 30 minutes. Plus, simply remove the module unit and you can pop this rabbit in the wash.

Tommee Tippee penguin 2-in-1 portable night light

Tommee Tippee penguin.jpg

  • Best : For longevity
  • Battery life : 10 hours
  • Sounds : None
  • Dimensions : 4.5cm x 5.3cm x 8.7cm
  • Number of light colours : Dimmable light

This night light from Tommee Tippee is a game-changer. The main penguin night light is charged via a USB cable (it doesn’t come with an adaptor) and acts as a hub for the portable egg light which proudly sits on top. The idea behind this product is to provide a fixed nursery night light to check on your baby once they’re in their own room, then once they hit 18 months of age, they can use the portable egg night light independently, making this a great option for longevity.

The tactile silicone egg is not only lovely to touch, it’s also the perfect size for little hands to carry and hold and our two-year-old tester loved looking after it. Both lights are dimmable; the penguin has a dimmer switch at the back, while the egg has a discreet button on the top which has three brightness settings. Once the egg is charged (a full charge takes eight hours) it will last 10 hours, although we found it exceeded this.

At under £30 it’s a still considered purchase (though not as much as the Moonie rabbit), but look at this as an investment: you have a night light – or a lovely little side lamp – that’ll get used for years to come.

Liewood Winston night light

Liewood Winston.jpg

  • Best : Eco design
  • Battery life : 12 hours
  • Dimensions : 14.5cm x 11cm x 11cm
  • Number of light colours : One

Who wouldn’t want this adorable panda keeping a watchful eye over them at night? Nordic brand Liewood is known for its eco credentials, and this is demonstrated in the rechargeable night light alleviating the need for batteries. Before use you’ll need to charge this little fella for three hours with the included USB charging lead, this will provide an impressive 12 hours of gentle soft glow, more than enough to see you through the night. The environmentally friendly soft silicone is tactile to the touch, and our three-year-old tester loved moving it around her bedroom.

Infantino soothing light and projector

Infantino Soothing.jpg

  • Best : For ease of use
  • Battery life : Lasts for weeks, thanks to 10-minute auto shut-off
  • Sounds : Yes
  • Dimensions : 9cm x 9.1cm x 3.3cm
  • Number of light colours : Two, nightlight and projector

This is a really nifty piece of kit from baby brand Infantino, and for its size – and cost – it’s bursting with features. It’s designed to work in three stages: starting life as a crib soothing light, then a crib projector and graduating as a table-top night lamp.

There are two straps supplied to attach to a cot – it’s worth bearing in mind that this only attaches if your cot has bars as we’re using a bedside crib we placed as close as we could, but in a traditional cot this is a doddle. A standout feature for us has to be the smart sound sensor, when a cry is detected, the nightlight automatically turns on saving you a trip out of bed.

We also like that you can control the volume using a switch at the rear, or can choose not to have the melodies/natural sounds (of which there are nine in total) playing at all, but our tester seemed to rather like them. It’s so easy to switch from ordinary night light, to projector, just by swivelling the grey cover, and the starry projection looks lovely on a wall or ceiling.

While this is wonderfully portable, it’s a shame it’s battery-powered. However, the 10-minute auto shut-off does preserve the battery and ours is still going strong after two weeks. We also like that there’s some longevity to this, as a lamp in a child’s bedroom.

Mamas & Papas elephant shelves and nightlight

Mamas & Papas Elephant.jpg

  • Best : Nursery feature
  • Battery life : Unspecified
  • Dimensions : Large 28.3cm x 49.4cm, medium 24.9 x 43.5cm, small 16.9 x 20.1cm

If you’re in the throws of decorating a nursery, and looking for a multifunctional product that not only looks good, but provides a service, then this could be just the ticket. Making an adorable wall display, this cute elephant design will suit any nursery style. Inside the box you’ll find a large and medium elephant shelf, as well as a little elephant being pulled by the balloon light. The light provides a soft soothing glow and is powered by 3 AAA batteries.

Even those not enamoured by DIY will find this a doddle to put up on the wall.

Kaloo bear projector night light

Kaloo bear.jpg

  • Best : For comfort
  • Battery life : 16 hours
  • Dimensions : 17cm x 18cm x 26cm
  • Number of light colours : Projects stardust in different colours

This teddy is so soft, we wanted to snuggle up with it ourselves, though we’d have to get it out of the clutches of our toddler tester first. Providing a gentle glow, and plenty of comfort, there’s a removable light panel housed in his furry tummy which can be turned on and off by squeezing it – this was easy enough for our tester to do independently.

The standout feature for us however, is the auto-off function, which will turn the light off after 20 minutes of use. We were impressed with the battery time, lasting around 16 hours, which saw us through the two weeks of testing. It takes around 4 hours to charge and the USB cable is provided. Plush and cosy, we like that this is as much a teddy as a practical sleep soother.

Purflo dream cloud musical portable night light

Dream Cloud.jpg

  • Best : Portable night light
  • Battery life : About a week
  • Dimensions : 12cm x 5cm x 9cm
  • Number of light colours : Six

This is the most compact night light of those we tested which makes it a great portable choice. Don’t be put off by its size, it’s small but it’s mighty. The sweet cloud design looks lovely by the baby’s side and can be attached to cot bars or a stroller using the Velcro loop. This little magical cloud will work through six colours before gently fading to dark after 30 minutes, and you can choose to have this accompanied by 10 lullabies, four different sounds inspired by nature, or a calming heartbeat noise.

The lullabies are lovely, and include classics such as “Hush Little Baby” and “Mary had a Little Lamb”. You can switch through the music using the arrows button at the back, or hold it down for about 3 seconds and it’ll play all of the lullabies in a sequence and auto stop after around  30 minutes. We also like that you can adjust the volume and choose to have music and light together, or separately. You’ll need to buy three AA batteries, and we did find these needed replacing after about a week.

Angelcare pabobo underwater effects projector whale

Angelcare Whale.jpg

  • Best : For projections
  • Batterly life : Unspecified
  • Dimensions : 30cm x 11cm x 26cm
  • Number of light colours : Three strengths

Transform your baby’s nursery or toddler’s bedroom into a calming underwater haven with this musical projector from Angelcare. You’ll need three AA batteries to power this product, but the result is rather impressive as the projection coupled with sounds is just magical.

Creating animated shapes with waves and swimming fish, choose from three strengths so you can choose how intense you’d like the light – it works best in a completely dark room. Combine the projection with the gentle marine melody, wave-inspired lullaby or white noise and you’ve created a serene spa-like space for the baby.

There are four different volumes or you can opt for no sound at all, and the music will turn off automatically after 15 minutes, while the projector will shut off after 22 minutes. We also love that you can remove the projector module and pop the whale in the wash. Again, we’d love to see this is a rechargeable product as it does drink battery juice quickly.

Chicco next2stars, neutral

Chicco Next2Stars.jpg

  • Best : For travel
  • Dimensions : 22cm x 15cm x 15cm
  • Number of light colours : Projector works it way through rainbow colours

Chicco is well known for its baby essentials, and if you’re a next2me user, this night light is probably on your radar. Even if you’re not familiar with the brand, the next2stars is an effective product. Sounding the classical work from the likes of Beethoven, Bach and Schumann, this is one sophisticated night light.

There are seven melodies in total, which can be flicked through using the aptly illustrated music button at the front. You’re able to adjust the volume using the wheel at the back (this also turns it off and on) and you can alter the light mode too. In lamp mode, it provides a soft projection glow, while as a projector it’ll work its way through a collection of colours – this is, of course, best seen in complete darkness. You can also use it in night light mode whereby the little moon button lights up providing a smattering of light.

To run through the rainbow of colours this night light offers will take around 30 minutes, it will then go into standby mode – useful for a product powered by three AA batteries. When in standby mode the built-in sound sensor means the next2stars can activate its light and sound cycle automatically if it senses blubbing.

The standout feature for us, though, is how versatile the attachment is. Yes, the perfect match is a next2me crib (£129, Mamasandpapas.com ), but it’s also compatible with other bedside cribs and travel cots, making it perfect for trips away. Oh, and the addition of a little bear went down a storm with our three-year-old tester.

Babymoov dreamy sleep trainer night light

Babymoov.jpg

  • Best : For functionality
  • Dimensions : 14cm x 16.8cm x 0.3cm
  • Number of light colours : The base emits the colours of the rainbow

This all-singing, all-dancing offering from Babymoov is a smart way to train your little one to know the difference between nighttime and daytime. It has four feature buttons hidden away at the back of the product and by activating the sleep function you can teach them when to sleep and when to wake up. Glowing blue when it’s time to sleep and a soft yellow when it’s time to wake up, the instructions were easy to follow and you can adjust the timings for full sleeps or shorter naps.

You can also choose between a steady light or a projection of a magical starry sky on the wall by turning the casing. The base emits the colours of the rainbow either randomly or in fixed mode using the night light button, and can be placed on a timer to reserve battery life. We did find that we needed to charge this every couple of days, but given the functionality we weren’t surprised.

There are six lullabies to choose from (again, can be placed on a timer) with a white noise option, and the volume can be adjusted. We love that it’s been designed with an ergonomic handle so that young ones can carry it themselves.

The verdict: Kids’ night lights

Polish brand Moonie proves that pretty and practical can exist in the baby world. Its rabbit with a light may be the most costly of those we tested, but it performs on every level; comforting, full of nifty features and doesn’t require batteries. And when its night light services are no longer required, you have yourself a plush toy for bedtime cuddles and more.

What’s the Best Baby Night Light? Your Complete Guide

baby travel night light

While preparing a nursery, soon-to-be parents may wonder, “Should I have a night light for my baby?” A soft light is beneficial for those late-night feeding sessions because it helps you find your crying baby quickly without disturbing them with bright lights. The best baby night light is usually a must-have in a child’s nursery!

Some baby night lights come with music or “white sound” machines. Parents say these features can help calm the baby while saving you the trouble of making “shushing” noises until you’re blue in the face. Also, within a few months after birth, you’ll want to start a night-time routine that will help your child know it’s bedtime. Night lights can be helpful with this.

While babies may not necessarily “need” a night light, it will most likely become an essential part of the bedtime routine, later on, so you might as well start now.

When you’re searching for baby night lights, the possibilities are endless. There are baby night light projectors, baby night lights and music, plain night lights and everything in between. To help you sort through the pile of choices, we’ve pulled together our top 5 picks:

BEST BABY NIGHT LIGHT

Baby Products

This egg-shaped baby night light is arguably the best night light on the market for feeding baby. Offering a soft, adjustable yellow glow that won’t disturb sleep cycles or strain eyes, the night light is comforting for little ones. Turn this night light on using touch control. With taps on different areas of the product, you can set a timer or simply turn it on and off as needed.

Baby Products

IT’S SAFE FOR YOUR BABY.

One of the best things about this product is that it’s completely safe to offer to your child to hold. It’s both waterproof and shockproof and is made with completely safe materials. What begins as your feeding lamp can quickly grow into your toddler’s nighttime companion, offering a dim, comforting light that lasts all night long. Recharge this night light using its convenient charging base or use a USB cord. The VAVA baby night light is simple, but performs its functions flawlessly and can be useful for many years in the nursery.

Baby Products

If you’re looking for something a little more high-tech, the Hatch Baby Rest Night Light offers a baby night light and music, as well as white noise options. Choose to have a baby lullaby playing while putting your little one down for the night or opt for calming ocean waves. The combination of a soft light, music and white noise options makes for the perfect night light. Any seasoned parent will tell you that soothing music is one of the best ways to help babies and toddlers get in the mood for bed.

Baby Products

This product offers plenty of customization options through the use of an app. This night light will also grow with your baby. It offers unique features such as a color-changing light that can be used to indicate to your toddler when it’s ok to get out of bed. To use this feature, you schedule a color change to occur at say, 7 am. Before the light turns green (or the color of your choice), you tell your child to stay in bed.

Although this product means a slightly larger investment than some of the other baby night lights, it does offer many additional features and can potentially be used for years. These features make the Hatch BestRest Night Light a top choice.

Baby Products

This product will continue to be popular as your baby grows, as the moving lights appeal to older children too. Although you may prefer to leave the plastic cover on so that there’s a soft glow for feedings and night waking, the calming projector show can help calm your baby down for night time. This baby night light runs with batteries or a USB charger.

Baby Products

Rather than a traditional nightlight, why not opt for a very portable, battery-powered night light projector combined with music? This delightful little star-shaped night light toy can stand on its own or be attached to the side of a crib. While projecting calming images of teddy bears, stars, moons, and clouds, this night light plays calming baby lullabies. Set a timer for 5 or 10 minutes so that the light automatically turns off on its own.

While this Tomy product is a nice addition to any bedtime routine, it’s not ideal for night feedings. You’ll probably need another, more traditional night light in addition to this product.

CHICCO GOODNIGHT STARS SOFT MUSICAL NIGHTLIGHT

Baby Products

Use this Chicco night light as a light or turn on the music function. With this product, you can calm your child through the baby night light projector, or you could simply use it as a lamp to attend to your baby at night. The music is a nice addition that you can use during your bedtime routine. The only downside is that the music shuts off automatically when the song is over. So you’ll need to turn it on again if you need the music to play for a longer time. This product is battery operated.

IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING SIMPLE

A no-nonsense night light to supplement any of the above baby-friendly options can be found on Argos with a twin pack of basic night lights. With these traditional wall plug-in night lights, you’ll find your way into the nursery and your baby without any trouble.

Now that you know all about the best baby night lights on the market you can choose the right one for you. A good night light will serve you and your child in creating a calming, quick and easy nighttime routine. After all, we’re all happiest when our little ones sleep well.

Whether you're up at night feeding a baby, convincing your toddler no monsters are lurking in the closet, or making sure your child can go to the bathroom without waking you—a night-light is essential. Some of the best night-lights include soothing extras like sleep sounds or help with bedtime training. Kids who tend to get up in the middle of the night need a portable light, and app control lets you turn night-lights down or off remotely without waking your wee ones. These are our favorites.

Check out our other bedtime buying guides, such as the Best Sleep Gadgets , Best Sound Machines , and Best Mattresses .

Special offer for Gear readers: Get a 1-year subscription to WIRED for $5 ($25 off) . This includes unlimited access to WIRED. com and our print magazine (if you'd like). Subscriptions help fund the work we do every day.

Best Overall

A night-light, sound machine, and dimmable clock rolled into one, the second-gen Hatch Rest is a handy gadget with something for kids of all ages. Parents can use the app to set colors, play soothing sounds, and schedule sleep and wake routines, with one color for sleep and another when it’s time to get up.

You should also consider the second-gen Hatch Rest+ ($90) , which has a wireless charging base with a built-in battery to make it more portable. It also offers an expanded library of content and a bedtime wind-down routine. You get one free month of the Hatch Sleep Membership with all models ($50 per year). It's optional, but it provides a steady stream of soundscapes, lullabies, and sleep stories.

This portable light has a wireless charging base and a whole bunch of relaxing modes that combine lighting effects with sounds. It also works as a Bluetooth speaker for streaming music or stories. Govee is one of our favorite smart lighting brands , with a wide range of products and a versatile app that lets you schedule lights, choose from millions of colors, and pick premade scenes with animated lighting effects.

However, there is such a thing as too much choice. It's all crammed into the app, but once you figure it out, the versatility is impressive. Luckily, this Night Light also has physical controls for cycling through scenes, though it’s easy to press the wrong button in the dark. Battery life is limited—Govee estimates between three and 30 hours, which is a ridiculously wide range—but it depends on what scenes and sounds you choose. (I found the lower end of that estimate more realistic.)

Best for Older Kids

My family loves the Wiz Portable Lamp because it’s packed with smart lighting tricks in traditional handheld lantern form. The touch controls are on top to turn it on, change brightness, and cycle through your favorite modes (which are set in the app). The Wiz app is easy to use and offers remote control for brightness, color, scheduling, and animated lighting effects. Capable of a lovely warm glow, it works well as a night-light, and the handle makes it very easy to carry if your kid (or you!) need to get up at night. Fully charged via the USB-C port, it’s good for around six hours. If you've never heard of the brand, Wiz's parent company, Signify, also owns Philips Hue .

Best for Learning

Before kids learn to tell the time, it can be challenging when they wake in the night to know whether they should get up or turn over and go back to sleep. The Groclock offers a simple solution: The face is blue through the night, and when it’s time to rise, it turns orange. There's an owl on the latest version, shown sleeping at night and awake during the day. (Never mind that a nocturnal owl is a strange choice.) The stars come out at night and disappear one by one as morning approaches.

The Groclock also has an alarm function and charges via USB-A. (You get the cable but no power adapter.) You can set separate times for weekdays and weekends, and you can tweak the brightness, which is always handy for a night-light. We used the original version of this with both of our children, and it proved fairly effective. (There will always be the odd night they insist on waking you!)

Moonside Lamp One on desk next to book and calendar

Best for Teens

A lava lamp for the digital age, the Moonside Lamp One has 120 individually addressable dynamic color zones inside to produce all sorts of mesmerizing lighting effects. The app allows you to set colors, brightness, and warmth, and you can choose lighting themes with names like Night Fire, Rainbow One, and Blue Lava. App control via Bluetooth is a little clunky, and the lamp is slow to respond sometimes, so I recommend connecting it via Wi-Fi, which also lets you enable voice controls using a Google Assistant or Alexa speaker.

The power button is on the bottom, and there are no other physical controls, which makes for a stylish look where the light is the star. This means it won’t be suitable for kids without a phone unless you set up voice controls for them. It’s also very lightweight and easy to knock over, so pick an out-of-the-way spot.

One of  our favorite sunrise alarms , the Casper Glow Light can also be a great night-light for kids or adults. It sits on a wireless charging base, can be flipped to turn on or off, is easy to carry around, and is durable enough to survive a tumble. Wiggle it to get a gentle light if you need to get up in the dark and don’t want to wake anyone else. It radiates a lovely warm light, and you can twist it to adjust the brightness. Set a schedule in the app and it will gently wake you. The Casper Glow can even help you drift off, as it gradually dims as bedtime approaches.

7 Best Baby Night Light Projectors for an Easier Bedtime (2024 Reviews)

Baby playing in bed

Sleep is probably the most talked about topic when you have small kids. The sleepless nights with several night feedings don’t always go away after the first few weeks. That’s why it’s important to start good sleep habits from the beginning. One pro tip for sleep success is to lay your babies in their beds awake. This way if they wake up in the middle of the night they know where they are and feel comfortable putting themselves back to sleep. However it’s not always easy to fall asleep at night, toddlers especially can start resisting bedtime, so it’s great to have a projector with fun images for them to look at until they fall asleep and also serves as a night light to help them know where they are. This is a great investment for setting your kids up for sleep success! After all, if they’re sleeping well, so are you!

FAQs about Best Baby Night Light Projectors

1. how much does a nightlight cost.

Nightlights typically cost about $10-$50. The more expensive models have more features such as sound machines with a large variety of sounds and lullabies, more timer options, and more advanced projector options.

2. Should babies sleep with night lights?

Babies are used to growing and sleeping in a dark womb. Yet, when we bring them into the world we expect them to adjust to the bright lights of our big world. Darkness, when your baby is first born, actually helps to establish their circadian rhythm. Since babies are used to the darkness they don’t need a night light, but as a parent, when you are in their room for frequent night feedings, you are going to want one! Although your child may not need it right away, as they grow they may start needing the night light to help them feel safe and secure.

3. Where should you place a nightlight in baby’s room?

The number one concern for baby’s sleep is safety. We want baby to sleep well, but never at the cost of safety. Place the nightlight anywhere that baby won’t be able to reach it. As your child grows you may need to change locations.

4. Will a baby night light help my child sleep?

In the beginning, your baby will need more darkness, but having that light when your baby falls asleep at night may help them to fall back asleep more easily because they can see where they are and know that it’s a familiar place. Especially during those toddler years, night terrors become prevalent and night lights help tremendously with comfort and security!

5. Do I need an outlet for my nightlight?

Some night lights require an outlet for use while others use batteries or rechargeable batteries. Check your instructions before setup! If your night light does require an outlet, then make sure it is out of reach of your baby!

Parenting is difficult. It’s even harder when you aren’t getting enough sleep. If your child isn’t sleeping well then neither are you. Getting a night light/projector for your child is a small investment to help them learn how to fall asleep on their own. Night lights help your child feel safe and secure and projectors are fun additions to make your child relaxed enough to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer!

The 8 best baby night-lights to buy.

Best Baby Room Night Lights

You might need a little light on in your child’s room at night so you can see what you’re doing during diaper changes or middle-of-the-night feedings, or to help soothe your baby to sleep. Why not choose a baby night-light! These products can be so helpful and convenient to use, as they offer a low level of light and are usually portable. We asked Pampers Parents which baby night-lights they thought were the best and why. Check out their favorites here to help you pick the right one.

Why You May Want to Use a Baby Night-Light

If you would like a little light in your baby’s room when you check on your baby at night, a baby night-light could be a good solution. A night-light emits a low level of light — enough so that you can see but not so much light that it would disrupt your child’s sleep or prevent him from learning to associate the dark with nighttime sleep. Some night-lights even come with a light projector to project colors and patterns like stars on the wall or ceiling to entertain your baby before bedtime. Many Pampers Parents said that they even liked a night-light that could double as a sound machine , as they found that white noise or other ambient sounds helped their baby drift off to sleep more easily . A night light is one of those items of baby gear that you may find you can’t live without once you have it.

Features to Look for When Choosing a Baby Night-Light

To help you pick the best baby night-light, check out the features that Pampers Parents said were the most important:

A soft light. Pampers Parents emphasized choosing a baby night-light that emits a dim, warm light that won’t affect your baby’s sleep.

Adjustable brightness. The right brightness level can vary based on things like placement, room size, and personal preference. Adjustable brightness allows you to have even more flexibility when it comes to your baby night-light.

Light color options. Pampers Parents liked having a baby night-light that lets them choose the color of the light.

Can play music or soothing sounds. Sometimes babies can be lulled to sleep by a little background noise, which is why some Pampers Parents said they wanted the night-light to be able to play white noise or other soothing sounds.

Ease of use. A night-light that's complicated or tricky to use isn't a good choice, especially because the room will often be dark when you try to turn the light on or off. Look for one that you can switch on and off with ease. Some night-lights work by simply tapping the light itself.

Price. Pampers Parents said that price was also a deciding factor for purchasing a baby night-light. Some night-lights on our list retail for around 20 dollars, but there are also a few more affordable and a few more expensive models that made the cut. As with any other kind of baby gear, more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better.

Long battery life. Pampers Parents said it was important that the light had a long battery life.

Timer. Some Pampers Parents said an auto-shutoff feature is nice to have, so that the light doesn't stay on all night long.

The 8 Best Baby Night-Lights

Our Pampers Parents voted on the best baby night-lights. Read the reviews to find out which one is right for your baby:

1. Night Light Star Projector Twilight Turtle Classic

Night Light Star Projector Twilight Turtle Classic

Why pick this one? Help your little one drift off into a starry dreamland with the Night Light Star Projector Twilight Turtle. Pampers Parents said they loved that this baby night-light projector comes in a plush turtle design in three colors: green, pink, or blue. Some Pampers Parents mentioned how easy this night-light is to use as well as the fact that it’s quite portable. Some Pampers Parents wished it had the option of electric charging (this night light is battery operated), and would have also liked the light to be a little brighter. The manufacturer claims this night-light is best for children aged 3 and up. If your child is any younger, you may wish to ask your child’s healthcare provider before using this product, or consider another product on this list. It has a 45-minute timer that automatically switches off, so you won’t have to remember to turn the light off manually. This feature may be a drawback if you want the light on all night.

Highlights: It can project eight constellations, so parents can also use it to teach their children about the stars. The colors change automatically, cycling through three different colors.

Price*: about $59.99 on Amazon.com

Pampers Parents pros and cons:

2. LumiPets Cute Animal Silicone Baby Night Light with Touch Sensor

LumiPets Cute Animal Silicone Baby Night Light with Touch Sensor

Why pick this one? LumiPets is a cute baby night-light with a gentle and calming glow, which the manufacturer says is suitable for children of all ages. It’s made of silicone, making it easy to wipe clean. Pampers Parents loved its animal design — you can choose from a bear, fox, owl, bunny, cat, or unicorn design — and the fact that this night-light is wireless and can be controlled with a remote. They also liked all the light color options, which include blue, red, green, yellow, and white. The item itself is white, so the color of the lights really stands out. You can change the color either by tapping the base of the lamp or with the remote control. The big benefit of the remote control is that you can switch the light off or adjust the brightness from the doorway without entering your little one’s room. There are also timer options and a brightness control so you can really tailor the lamp to your preferences. Although the wireless function of this baby night-light was a popular feature, some Pampers Parents said they found the battery life wasn’t very long and that the cable for recharging was a little on the short side. As a solution, you may need to run an extension cord so the night-light can stay connected to power. (Just make sure all cords are completely out of reach of your little one.)

Highlights: The manufacturer claims this light is one that older children can carry with them at night on the way to the bathroom, as it’s designed to fit in small hands.

Price*: about $21.99 on Amazon.com

3. VAVA Home VA-CL006 Night Lights for Kids

VAVA Home VA-CL006 Night Lights for Kids

Why pick this one? This night-light is great for kids of any age. It’s shaped like an egg and gives off a soft yellow light. The manufacturer claims the anti-blue LED light won’t damage your little one’s sight, and you can set the one-hour timer, which switches the light off once your child has gone to sleep. The light is also customizable, so you can boost the brightness when needed (useful if you want to use this outdoors or want to read your little one a story). There is also a breastfeeding light option. Pampers Parents loved this adjustable light feature and the way you could adjust the brightness with a tap. They also liked the long battery life. This night-light is super easy to charge — just put it on the recharging base or use a USB cable. Many Pampers Parents loved the portability of this baby night-light and its ease of use overall. Keep in mind that some Pampers Parents mentioned that the instructions were hard to follow.

Highlights: Its built-in silicone handle makes it great for hanging in your little one’s room or for taking it with you. And as it's waterproof, it can be used both indoors and outdoors.

Price*: about $20.99 on Amazon.com

4. OURREY LED Silicone Whale Night Light

OURREY LED Silicone Whale Night Light

Why pick this one? Pampers Parents loved this night-light, made from BPA-free silicone, for its fun whale-shaped design and soft texture. They also really liked that it had multiple light colors to choose from — tap to change between red, yellow, green, blue, and purple, and tap to go from a dim white light to a bright light. The manufacturer claims that the lamp is easy to carry around and is durable, and that its anti-blue warm LED light won’t hurt the eyes. Although the manufacturer claims you only need to tap and press the switch to change colors, some Pampers Parents said they had trouble with the tap feature and wished it worked more consistently.

Highlights: The manufacturer claims this product is suitable for outdoor use.

5. Munchkin Shhh Baby Sound Machine and Night Light

Munchkin Shhh Baby Sound Machine and Night Light

Why pick this one? This portable night-light also functions as a sound machine with shushing, heartbeat, and white noise options. It can glow and pulse with the selected sound, and comes with the auto-shutoff options of 10, 20, and 30 minutes. Pampers Parents loved the affordable price of this baby night-light — it’s one of the more budget-friendly options on our list. However, Pampers Parents also reported a few downsides, such as the battery life being too short and the light being not quite bright enough. Highlights: Comes with 3D icons, which makes it easier to find the button you need in the dark.

Price*: about $19.99 on Amazon.com

6. LOHAS Dimmable Plug in LED Night Light

LOHAS Dimmable Plug in LED Night Light

Why pick this one? This baby night-light is different from the other models on this list, as it plugs directly into a power outlet. It allows you to choose the exact degree of brightness you want in the room, from 5 to 8 lumens, by using the slider switch. The manufacturer claims that the product produces a gentle light that helps soothe children without hurting their eyes. Pampers Parents liked the lamp’s convenient design and durability. Some Pampers Parents said that this baby night-light is bright enough for a diaper change but not so bright that it wakes the baby. Pampers Parents noted the large size and the price as downsides for this product. Highlights: Has a special light sensor that will sense the brightness of the surrounding environment and will switch on and off automatically.

Price*: about $11.99 on Amazon.com

7. GKCI Touch Lamp, Portable Sensor Control Bedside Lamps

GKCI Touch Lamp, Portable Sensor Control Bedside Lamps

Why pick this one? This night-light operates at a touch or with a remote. Its white light has three brightness levels, and the lamp also offers many other light color options. Pampers Parents liked the portability of this battery-operated night-light and that it gave enough of glow for things like diaper changes without it disturbing their baby’s sleep. They also said it was easy to use and liked the different light options. Some Pampers Parents found the touch control a little too sensitive, though, and noted that it didn’t always work. This night-light is larger than others, measuring 3.54 by 3.54 by 5.91 inches. This may not be the best option for you if you want your night-light to be easily portable. Highlights: The white light mode has three brightness levels, and its multicolor setting offers 256 light combinations.

Price*: about $19.88 on Amazon.com

8. Bubzi Co Baby Toys Owl Sound Machine, Night Light

Bubzi Co Baby Toys Owl Sound Machine, Night Light

Why pick this one? This adorable owl-shaped night-light may look like a plush toy (the owl plush-toy part can be handwashed), but it also functions as a calming baby night-light and sound machine. Pampers Parents loved that they could choose from a wide range of sounds, including lullabies (there are 10!), bird song, and a heartbeat sound. The light projects stars and dots in red, green, and blue, but some Pampers Parents would have liked it to have it put on more of a show. As a simple night-light, it does the job. Before buying this one, consider this downside: The manufacturer claims that the projector light is not bright enough for changing diapers at night. Highlights: Unlike most of the other products on this list, this product has three functions: it’s a night-light, sound machine, and plush toy all in one.

Price*: about $34.95 on Amazon.com

The Bottom Line

Finding the right baby night-light is really a matter of what you need. Are you looking for a simple low light that allows you to change diapers at night and not bump into things in your baby’s nursery, or do you want a flashier night-light with music and celestial projections to soothe and entertain your baby? No matter what you’re looking for, you’ll find the perfect one on this list of Pampers Parents favorites.

The parenting website for dads

Which is the best nursery night light for babies and toddlers (2024 buying guide).

baby travel night light

Some parents go in search of the best night lights before their baby is born, while others turn to them in a desperate bid to ease a sleep regression.

Whatever your reason, picking the best night lights can be extremely tricky - especially because it's a crowded market.

Do you get one perfect for the baby stage and then another perfect for toddlers? Or do you try to get one that does the job for both? And in an ever-growing technologically advanced world, night lights are no longer simply something you plug into a socket and leave all night.

Over the course of this guide, we'll explore why we use night lights in the first place, some of the key features you need to look out for, and of course, we've got 10 of our favourites lined up for you.

Why do we use night lights?

You may be forgiven for thinking that we use a night light to help our baby sleep, because they're afraid of being in a dark room - offering just enough light to comfort them, without being too bright that it disrupts their sleep. But that's only partially true.

We do, indeed, use a night light in our child's room to comfort them at night when they're afraid of their dark... when they're toddlers. The reality is that we use night lights in our baby's nursery for our own benefit - so we can see what we're doing when we feed them, change them, burp them, comfort them, and so on in the middle of the night.

As a baby, they don't need a night light at all. In fact, babies sleep best in a dark room. The darker the better. Think about it, they spent several months in total darkness in the womb. Babies aren't born with a natural fear of the dark. It develops through exposure to books, stories, TV, films etc that give children a reason to be scared of the dark. So, we might need to introduce a night light to our child's room if they do develop a fear of the dark.

Over time, you may find that your child takes comfort from having a night light, regardless of whether they're scared of the dark. That's because it becomes part of their routine - they need to know that everything is in place before settling off to sleep.

How to choose the best night light

There are a lot of night lights on the market, so it's a good idea to think about the key features and what is important to you. So, let's look at what makes a great night light.

Brightness level

A dim glow or dim light is the hallmark of a great night light. You don't want a bright light as this will likely overstimulate your child and prevent sleep. You can get a dimmable night light, allowing you to adjust brightness levels as needed.

Colour options

A growing number of night lights allow you to change the colour of the light being emitted. While this may seem like a great idea, it does come with dangers.

If you are going to use a night light, research shows that an amber or red light is best to help your baby sleep (and toddler!) because it causes the least disruption to your child's melatonin production. However, white, purple and blue light can disrupt your baby’s natural circadian rhythm.

Power source

This is more of a practical consideration. Do you want something that plugs into a mains power source or do you want something with a rechargeable battery?

There's not necessarily a right or wrong answer, here. It comes down to your personal preference. If you're going for a rechargeable battery, be sure it's one that promises good battery life - at a minimum, you want it to be able to last the night.

Additional features

There are additional features you may want to consider when looking for the right night light.

Motion sensor night light

A motion sensor night light will usually stay on for a set period of time, the light shuts off giving your little one a dark room to sleep in, and will only reactivate if it detects movement (indicating your child has woken up and may need the light to come back on to comfort them).

Night light timer

You can get a night light operated by a timer. If you're pretty confident that your child will sleep all night once they've first drifted off, the light shuts off after the set timer.

Sound machine

You may want a night light that doubles as a sound machine. White noise is growing increasingly popular for babies, older kids and adults to get better sleep. There are plenty of night lights with different sound options, such as calming nature sounds.

Smart night light

There's an app for everything these days, including a night lights with app control. The best smart night light is one that is pretty advanced in their own features, so you may be able to select your preferred colour, turn the night light off and on manually, set an auto-timer, play various sounds etc.

There are also a growing number of 'projector' night lights that project images (typically a starry night sky) around the room, rather than a steady light. They typically spin at a slow pace, and can help to create a calming environment to help your toddler or baby sleep.

For many parents, this is going to be the biggest factor when it comes to picking a night light. As is usually the case, the more features a night light has, the more it's likely to cost.

A standard night light may cost less than £10/$10. However, a more premium night light may cost closer to £80/$100.

The 5 best night lights for a baby's room

Let's check out the best night light options for your baby's room.

   1.    Ewan the Dream Sheep

amazons choice badge

Editor's Review

“I purchased this mainly for travel and it was a life saver! My girls were soothed and comforted throughout their naps...the stuffed animal is so soft, cut, has great sound and overall performs great! This was worth every penny!"

Ewan the Dream Sheep has become one of the most loved sleep aids, with more than one million units sold worldwide. It doubles as a night light and sound machine - with its warm glow of red light and comforting recordings of a heartbeat to mimic being inside the womb.

The Deluxe version has a 'MoonMode smartCRY sensor', meaning it will reactivate when it recognises your baby stirring. It listens for up to 4-hours to preserve battery life

Key features

  • Heartbeat recordings
  • MoonMode smartCRY sensor
  • Washable (with control pod removed)
  • Loved by many parents
  • Mimicking noises from the womb is unique
  • Can help to soothe baby before parents are even woken
  • Sensor only operates for 4 hours at a time, so not as suitable for older babies and toddlers
  • Some might see it as expensive for only the newborn phase
  • No adjustable brightness

   2.    Hatch Rest+ Night Light

“I can say after four years I still love this product. Use it all the time. Our son has grown up with it in his room and he knows what time to get out of bed, what time nap is, etc."

The Hatch Rest+ is a high-tech night light with 3-in-1 functionality - a night light, a sound machine, and tool to help toddlers and older kids learn when it's time to wake up, meaning it's effective right the way from birth to the toddler phase and beyond.

It can all be controlled via a simple app and has an 8-hour backup battery in case of power loss.

  • Night light, sound machine and 'time-to-rise' trainer
  • App controlled
  • Portable with back-up power source
  • Great value for money when you consider how long this will be useful
  • Helps to train older children when to sleep and when to wake
  • Adjustable brightness and sleep time
  • Out of price range for many parents, despite value for money
  • Some parents have reported technical faults (but these often rectified by Hatch)

   3.     Shnuggle Moonlight

N/A

“Looks great. Pleasant warm light. Made for soft silicone so kids can rumble around without any fear. Battery holds very well. Light and versatile in use. Quality product at a good price."

The Shnuggle Moonlight is easily one of the most portable night lights on this list. It's a dual mode night light, offering a parents' mode for night feedings and changes, and a child mode that activates the light at full brightness, slowly dimming to a soft glow through the night. In the mornings, the deck emits a low blue light to help your child wake.

The deck also includes a thermometer, changing the colour of the deck depending on if it's too hot or too cold in the room.

  • Parent and child modes
  • Temperature-sensing deck
  • Low-blue light for morning
  • One of the most portable night lights on this list
  • Battery life is strong
  • Emits a warm glow
  • Requires a USB charging adapter
  • Temperature reading is only visible on the dock, so you need to go in your baby's room to check

   4.     LumiPets Bear

N/A

“We love it! We pause it on the red light and that colour offers just enough light for our daughter to feel comfortable while falling asleep."

If you're looking for a simple night light that does one thing and does it well, the LumiPets Bear may well be the best night light for you and your baby's room. It has nine colour options (including some you wouldn't want to use), and a colour lock feature.

Made of soft silicone material with an adorable design, you'll probably find your little one wanting to play with it, too. There are also nine other character choices, including unicorn, bunny, astronaut, owl and more.

  • Tap and remote control
  • Nine colour options
  • 32-hour long battery life (depending on colour mode)
  • Adorable to look at
  • Simple to use
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Battery life can drain quicker on certain colours
  • Inclusion of blue, white, pink and purple colours isn't helpful
  • Requires physical touch to turn off

   5.     Skip Hop Moonlight And Melodies Nightlight Soother

N/A

“I love the variety of sounds and lullabies. Our favourites are the ocean noise, heartbeat and Twinkle Twinkle. Cute gift for any baby or child. We have had this for 5 years and it is still working perfectly."

The Skip Hop Moonlight And Melodies Owl is an adorable night light that offers a couple of different options to help your baby fall asleep. There's one colour option from the owl's glowing belly, but it is adjustable to make sure you can maintain a dark room. It doubles as a sound machine, offering four different soothing melodies and four different relaxing nature sounds. And, there's also a mini starry night sky projector, too.

  • Auto-off timer settings
  • Four melodies and four nature sounds
  • Mini star projector
  • Nice warm glow with adjustable brightness
  • Auto-off timer works nicely
  • Lovely design
  • Having the operational buttons on the back can be a little fiddly at first
  • Similarly priced night lights usually have additional features (temperature readings, clock etc)
  • No battery power

The 5 best night lights for toddlers and beyond

You're out of the baby sleep stage and you're generally getting a good night sleep. But your little one may need a night light as they need older; whether it's because they're afraid of the dark, have had a night light since they were a baby and need that comfort, or need something to light the way when they need to go to toilet.

Whatever the reason, let's look at your options for the best night light for toddlers and older kids.

   6.     Tommee Tippee Gro Clock

N/A

“My kids used to wake up way too early. When I got this, they knew to close their eyes and go back to sleep until the sun came on."

The Tommee Tippee Gro Clock is a much-loved sleep trainer that doubles as a night light for older children. At bedtime, the sun goes to sleep and is replaced by the stars, counting down to when it's time to wake up when the sun comes back. It encourages children to check the clock if/when they wake, and go back to sleep if the stars are still showing.

It has a key lock to stop pesky kids resetting it so they can wake up early, and it also comes with a free bedtime-themed story book.

  • Time-to-rise trainer
  • Comes with free story book
  • Helps older children to know when it's time to fall asleep and time to wake up
  • Provides a low light that is just enough to help them see
  • The key lock function stops older kids cheating and reseting the clock so they can get up
  • Easy to operate
  • Overnight uses a blue light, so put it on it's lowest brightness
  • Pretty easy for kids to cheat once they learn how to unlock the keys

   7.      Wooden Wall Light

“My kids are not scared to go to the bathroom at night any more. I love them since it helps conserve the energy consumption and very versatile."

Easily one of the most stylish night lights on this list, this wooden wall light is perfect for older children who need to go to toilet in the night, or need to find something in their room like an extra blanket. The wall fixing attaches using strong adhesive tape, while the light itself can be removed and carried with them wherever they need to go. There are three modes - off, static on, and auto-sensor.

At a 120° angle and 3-4m detection, you may want to place it away from your child's bed, otherwise there's a risk they could set it off just by turning over in their sleep.

  • Motion sensor
  • Removable light wand
  • 120° angle and 3-4m detection
  • Great for helping children go to the toilet or find something in their room at night
  • Magnets work brilliantly
  • Look really stylish
  • Not the easiest to move once you place the wall fixing
  • Strong detection, so your child tossing and turning in bed may activate it

   8.     Star Night Light Projector

N/A

“My 3 year old had been having lots of separation anxiety at bedtime - we got this for him to make his room more appealing and he absolutely loves it."

One of the best-selling star projection night lights on Amazon, this one has 17 different colours modes offering plenty of single and combination choices. It can rotate 360° to help create a calming environment for your little one to look up to, and there's a dome cover to convert it to more of a night light providing a warm glow.

With four buttons, it's super simple to operate - giving you control over the timer, spin, colour and mode.

  • 17 colour modes
  • Night light and projection modes
  • 360° spin projection
  • Plenty of colour choices
  • Simple to operate
  • Plug and battery power source
  • LED lights can be a bit bright if you look directly at them, so try to place the unit where you child won't be able to see it
  • Not particularly robust
  • Battery life isn't great

   9.      Anker eufy Plug-in Night Light

amazons choice badge

“The built-in dusk-to-dawn sensor is a game-changer. These night lights automatically turn on when the room gets dark, and they switch off when there's enough light."

A more traditional, 'no frills' night light, the Anker eufy night lights plug straight into the wall and emit a soft, warm glow. It has a light sensor meaning it automatically turns off and on as the ambient light in a room adjusts, thereby saving energy. They're sold in packs of four or six, so you could put an extra light in the hallway for when your little one goes to the bathroom.

  • Daylight sensor
  • Glare-free light
  • Energy efficiency
  • A nice warm glow
  • Automatically turns off when there's enough light
  • Compact design
  • Great value for money
  • No additional features

  10.     FiDi Tek LED Night Light

N/A

“Colour change is great and brightness settings also work really well. Battery lasts through the night when fully charged. Perfect purchase and not too expensive!"

Suitable for most budgets, the LED Night Light from FiDi Tek is a great choice for older children who want to control their own night light and take it with them when they go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. It has a 360° colour wheel with touch control, allowing you to choose exactly the colour you want and brightness level. It charges via a USB cable and can be placed wherever you want.

  • Touch control adjustment
  • Full 360° colour wheel choices
  • Three brightness levels
  • Simple for kids to use
  • Kid friendly operation
  • Great battery life
  • Super portable
  • Some brightness modes are way too bright

Is your child having sleeping issues?

baby travel night light

Sometimes we go in search of the best night light to solve our child's sleeping issues. Depending on how you're using yours, it may actually be the cause of their sleep woes.

If sleep is a sudden problem, they may be going through a sleep regression or need sleep training .

Can a newborn sleep with a night light?

When your baby is born, they can sleep is almost any light environment. They don't need the night light, but it certainly won't cause any issues. This is particularly helpful for those essential nighttime activities during the newborn phase.

However, around 10-12 weeks, your baby becomes much more aware of their surroundings. So, a night light may actually have a negative impact on your baby's sleep.

How dark should a baby's room be?

Babies sleep best when it's dark. So, you want the room to be as dark as possible - so much so that you can see your hand in front of your face.

Is a night light or projector best?

This really comes down to personal preference and they both carry positives. The projector offers something unique that can really help to create a calm environment to support sleep, but if you look at the projector itself, the light bulb is typically quite bright, so it may not be the best option if your little one can see the projector itself.

When will a child start having bad dreams?

Most children don't start having nightmares or night terrors until the ages of 2-3. However, they have been known to start between 12 and 18 months.

My son got stranded alone in a foreign country due to an error, with the next available flight in a week.

It was like something out of a “Home Alone” sequel.

An Iceland mother was apoplectic after her teen son was stranded abroad by Wizz Air after the budget airline allegedly overbooked his flight.

“I am so lost for words,” the fretful parent, named Arna, 39, wrote in a a Reddit post blowing up online.

Her 14-year-old son, Alfred, had reportedly been traveling back home to Reykjavík from Rome, Italy with seven other teens and an adult chaperone following a fencing trip, the Mirror reported.

Arna.

However, when the group checked in at the airport, Alfred was informed the carrier didn’t have a seat for him even though he had a ticket and his mom paid an additional $45 to check-in.

“Due to a problem with online check-in he had to go to the check-in desk and pay extra for checking in there. He did not get assigned a seat,” Arna explained on Reddit. “Once boarding was finished he was told he was bumped off due to overbooking.”

As a result, the mortified youngster had to look on helplessly as his friends departed on the Wizz Air flight without him.

While the accompanying adult was offered the option to give up her seat for him, she declined as this would mean leaving the whole group of minors unattended on the plane.

“He [Alfred] was upset by the situation,” Arna told the Mirror. “He was really, really frightened, I think. I think it just felt very, very unnerving and frightening for him.”

A teen at the airport.

To make matters worse, the Wizz Air staff said the next flight to Iceland wasn’t for another week.

“They offered absolutely no help in getting him on another flight the same day… and no understanding of how grave the situation was, to leave a 14-year-old alone stranded in a foreign country,” the distraught mom wrote on Reddit.

She added that the staff said they had no idea how old Alfred was despite the fact that his age was listed on the booking.

A Wizz Air plane.

The petrified teen made his way to the Wizz Air service desk because staff had told him he was entitled to compensation.

When he got there, he was allegedly told he was entitled to nothing.

The Post reached out to Wizz Air for comment.

The one consolation was that a friendly couple had also been bumped from the same flight and offered to take care of the trapped teen.

“Luckily there was a couple bumped from the same flight who offered to sort of look after him,” Arna recalled. “Otherwise, I’m not sure what I would have done.”

“I would have probably flown over on the first available flight or contacted the Italian police.”

The air odyssey finally ended after the determined parent booked Alfred a “really expensive flight” home with the couple via Icelandic Air, whom she described as “really helpful.”

The accompanying couple reportedly helped her son “reclaim his luggage” — something Wizz Air neglected to do, per Arna.

Despite filing a formal complaint, the beleaguered mother says that the airline has yet to reply, claiming: “There’s no way of getting through to them.”

Arna.

Breaking News

Things to do | santa clara county is expected to purchase regional medical center following trauma center downgrade, things to do | holiday lights 2021: 18 best and brightest bay area displays, beloved holiday lights displays, canceled or scaled back last year due to covid-19, are back for the 2021 season, more wonderfully over-the-top than ever.

Visitors walk past a Ferris wheel dedicated to military services Tuesday during the Christmas lights display at Dave Rezendes' Casa del Pomba in Livermore. After taking the pandemic year of 2020 off, the display is back, thrilling holiday crowds again for the 39th year. The lighting display features 712,325 lights with three displays dedicated to essential workers and military services, and a pair of lovely doves in a kissing booth among other holiday displays. The bright attraction is open to the public every night, free of charge and closes on January first. (Ray Chavez/Bay Area News Group)

You’ll know the significance of this statement if you’re an avid Bay Area fan of wonderfully over-the-top holiday lights displays. Last holiday season, pandemic concerns prompted some homeowners, organizations or public spaces to cancel or drastically scale back beloved displays.

One of those canceled displays was the world-renowned show that Dave Rezendes, a deacon at St. Michael Catholic Church, has hosted at his Livermore home for nearly 40 years.

baby travel night light

To the delight of fans, Rezendes’ illuminated extravaganza is back for 2021. It starts on Dec. 3, with a procession to his property, Casa del Pomba or House of the Dove.

Rezendes’ show is just one of the many popular displays returning in 2021. The Niles Canyon Railway’s historic Train of Lights ride , a no go for 2020, was so wildly missed, the 2021 version sold out almost instantly. Meanwhile, other displays will be bigger and more spectacular than ever, including San Jose’s Christmas in the Park , which has vastly expanded its offerings.

Here are 18 of the Bay Area’s best displays, but feel free to email [email protected] or fill out the submission form at the end to let us know if we’re missing a great show. You can also visit the California Christmas Lights website to find details about displays in your hometown and throughout Northern California.

Unless otherwise indicated, you can visit most of these displays nightly, after sundown and at no cost. Be prepared to wear masks and practice social distancing.

Deacon Dave’s world-famous display

The Christmas display at Dave Rezendes’ Casa del Pomba at 352 Hillcrest Drive has been showcased on cable and international TV, with HGTV once ranking it as one of the largest home displays in America. Every year — save for 2020 — Rezendes invites the community to walk through his display, which in 2019 featured more than 600,000 lights, a poinsettia theme and a proposal bridge, where dozens of marriage proposals have taken place over the years.

When and where: Nightly Dec. 3-Jan 1, starting with an opening night procession at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 3, at 352 Hillcrest Drive in Livermore;  http://casadelpomba.com.

Christmas in the Park, San Jose

The beloved San Jose tradition will feature not one, but two locations this year. The popular walk-through display is returning to downtown’s Plaza de Cesar Chavez with a 65-foot tree that visitors can stroll through. Christmas in the Park also is hosting Blinky’s Illuminated Holiday, a separate drive-through event featuring more than 200,000 lights at Lake Cunningham Park, near Raging Waters.

When and where: Christmas in the Park starts with the tree lighting at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26, and runs from noon to midnight daily through Jan. 2. 194 South Market Street between San Carlos and East San Fernando streets. Admission is free.

The drive-through Blinky’s show takes place nightly from 5 to 11 p.m. Nov. 26-Jan 9. Admission is $30 per car, and $75 for VIP tickets, which provides a Christmas “swag” bag and entry at the front of the line for every 30-minute slot. Book tickets at www.sanjose.org/events/christmas-park-2021 .

Alex Dourov’s Knottingham Circle extravaganza

The show by the founder of the California Christmas Lights website offers a mix of old-school decorations that he’s accumulated over the past 30 years and high-tech light-and-sound effects. For 2021, Dourov is bringing back his interactive snow machine and other displays he didn’t use last year due to public health concerns. As always, kids are invited to make calls to Santa, and guests can listen to music from the sidewalk or on 107.9 FM from their car.

When and where: 5 to 10 p.m. from Nov. 27 through the end of the year at 467 Knottingham Circle in Livermore, http://californiachristmaslights.com .

Oakland Zoolights “Glowfari”

The Oakland Zoo has always hosted one of the Bay Area’s most unusual holiday displays. This year, the zoo reprises the amazing “Glowfari” show it premiered last year. The show features gorgeous, detailed, larger-than-life animal lanterns arrayed around the zoo’s 525 acres. On a crisp winter night, families — or couples on dates — can stroll around the zoo and meet magnificent, glowing elephants, giraffes and even a 15-foot-tall penguin.

When and where: Open from 5 to 10 p.m. most nights through Jan. 30 (closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Day and some January dates.) Admission is $20-$24. Check www.oaklandzoo.org  for details and reservations.

Historic estate lights in Woodside

Woodside’s century-old Filoli estate will open its stately mansion to visitors once more, with more than 20 elaborately decorated trees set up in the grand dining room and other elegantly appointed spaces. What’s especially magical about Filoli are the lights arrayed around the extensive garden, including a yew tree rainbow, twinkling against the backdrop of a setting winter sun. Santa also is back on weekends and available for selfies. Visitors can pause their tour to enjoy some mulled wine or hot whiskey cider served in the Woodland Garden Court.

When and where: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily through Jan. 2 at 86 Cañada Road, Woodside. Filoli will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  Admission is $15-$38;  https://filoli.org .

Picardy Drive’s Storybook Christmas

Following a decades-long tradition, residents of 1920s Tudor-style homes in East Oakland will once again put on a united holiday display. Lights will hang from some 70 homes, all of which are built with the style’s classic turrets, gables and decorative timber and arranged around several grassy medians. In a nod to the way Picardy Drive’s display has become an Oakland destination for nearly 90 years, the city will help decorate a large tree in the central median.

When and where: Nightly, with residents hoping to have their lights up by Dec. 4. Picardy Drive, off Seminary Avenue near Mills College.

Crippsmas Place

“Yes, Virginia, there will be a Crippsmas Place this year!” say the organizers of this unique and cheerful neighborhood representation of community solidarity and goodwill. For nearly 60 years, residents of the 70 homes in this north Fremont neighborhood have illuminated their front yards, raised larger-than-life plywood cutouts of favorite cartoon characters and used their displays to raise money for worthy causes.

People from outside the neighborhood are encouraged to walk or drive in, and everyone can donate either in person or online to six organizations, including the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and local groups that support families, foster children, wildlife and breast cancer support services.

When and where: 6 to 10 p.m. from Dec. 11 to Dec. 25 on Nicolet Avenue, Cripps Place and surrounding streets in Fremont;  www.crippsmasplace.org .

Lights in the Cacti in Walnut Creek

During “Garden of d’Lights,” visitors can meander along the paths of the 3.5-acre garden, where its world-famous collection of gorgeous cacti and other succulents and drought-tolerant plants are presented with fantastical and specially-programmed lasers and thousands of LED lights.

When and where: 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Thursday through Sunday evenings through Dec. 23 at 1552 Bancroft Road, Walnut Creek. Tickets are $8-$24 and must be purchased ahead; www.ruthbancroftgarden.org/lights2020 .

History Park’s Heritage Holiday Light Show

For years, the Mattos family of San Jose has created a winter wonderland in their apricot orchard. For 2021, the show has moved to History Park, with the family donating its lights for the park’s “Deck the Halls” show, which features lights projected onto the front of the Pacific Hotel. Guests also can browse for holiday crafts, do scavenger hunts, play lawn games and pick up snacks and treats at food trucks or at O’Brien’s Ice Cream and Candy Shop.

When and where: 6, 7 and 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday through Jan. 2 (shows not presented on Dec. 24, 25 and 31). History Park is located at the south end of Kelley Park at the corner of Senter Road and Phelan Avenue. Admission is $5-$10, https://historysanjose.org .

J.R. Mattos’s new, amazing home show

J.R. Mattos is the South Bay holiday lights aficionado who helped devise his family’s long-popular Orchard Lights display and who is the creative force behind this year’s displays in San Jose’s History Park and Christmas in the Park (above). But Mattos also invites people to check out the lights show he is arranging along the private lane leading to his Morgan Hill home.

When and where: 5 to 10 p.m., possibly starting as early as Friday, Nov. 26, but definitely by Dec. 4 and continuing through Jan. 8. 17271 James Lex Lane, Morgan Hill.

Widmer World, Pleasanton

The Widmer family of Pleasanton also canceled its popular home display in 2020. But the family’s show is returning in 2021 for its 20th year, with their “big tree” of red and green lights in front, their giant “Peace on Earth” sign and their tunnel of decorated trees, displays of popular cartoon characters and elaborate arrangements of life-sized Santas, reindeer and snowpeople.

When and where: 6 to 9 p.m. nightly, Dec. 1-Jan. 5 at 3671 Chelsea Court, Pleasanton;  http://widmer-world.com .

Los Gatos’ Fantasy of Lights

The popular walk-through for this beloved light show at Vasona Lake County Park has already sold out. But families can still book reservations to enjoy the 1.5-mile drive-through option, which invites them to cruise through a fantasy land with lights, animated figures and a 90-foot twinkling tree. The show comes courtesy of the Santa Clara County Parks Department.

When and where: From 6 to 10 p.m. nightly from Dec. 7 to 30 (closed Dec. 25). The route starts at 333 Blossom Hill Road in Los Gatos. Admission is $20 per vehicle, or $50 for an oversized vehicle. Find more information about reservations, which must be made in advance, at the parks department website, www.parkhere.org .

Christmas Tree Lane, Alameda

Alameda’s Christmas Tree Lane, a co-operative effort put on by more than 50 households, returns this holiday season. Local groups will be back to perform, and kids can drop off letters to Santa in a specially designated mailbox that routes them to the North Pole.

When and where: Nightly from Dec. 4 through New Year’s Day, 3200 block Thomson Avenue, between High Street and Fernside Boulevard, Alameda;  www.facebook.com/christmastreelane .

Thornton Way Christmas Display

The residents of this home in San Jose’s Fruitdale district joke that they annually mount their extravaganza of 50,000 lights, synchronized with music, to “help with PG&E’s debt.” But they also have the same motivations as other illumination enthusiasts: to bring Christmas cheer and to put smiles on kids’ faces. Guests can also listen to the music from their cars on 92.9 FM.

When and where: 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. through Christmas Day, Thornton Way at Downing Avenue, San Jose, http://www.xmasdisplay.com /

Model train show in Mountain View

For more than 40 years, the Bianco family of Mountain View have set up their festive model train display to run through their front yard and even into their front window — to the delight of neighbors and anyone else passing by their Adele Avenue home. Weather permitting, trains will run on five tracks.

When and where: 5 to 9 p.m. nightly, except Mondays, through Christmas Day, 2383 Adele Ave., Mountain View.

Foster family Christmas

The lights show that Steven Foster has created at his Redwood City home for the past 25 years “gets bigger and better” each year, to the delight of his friends and neighbors. He estimates his show this year will feature more than 35,000 lights and decorations, plus music, inflatable figures, a snow machine and a “Letters to Santa” box.

When and where: 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. weekdays, 5:30  to 10:30 p.m. on weekends through Jan. 7. 411 Topaz St., Redwood City, https://www.instagram.com/fostersholidays/.

Friday “Nights of Lights,” Half Moon Bay

This coastal town’s picturesque downtown transforms into a festival of lights on Friday nights during December, when visitors can stroll by decorated store windows and shop for gifts. The town also hosts four special events: a tree lighting ceremony on Friday, Nov. 26, a lighted parade with Santa on Dec. 3, a holiday market on Dec. 10, and holiday music and caroling on Dec. 17.

When and where: 6 to 8 p.m. Fridays, Nov. 26 to Dec. 17. Main Street, Half Moon Bay;  www.visithalfmoonbay.org .

Plaza lights, Healdsburg

The Sonoma County Wine Country destination hosts “Light Up the Plaza,” with lights shimmering around Healdsburg’s historic plaza and on its holiday tree throughout the season. The plaza’s “Light Archway” is doubling in length this year and will feature an interactive component, allowing people to add a free LED candle to the display with a personalized note. Stop in for a holiday tea — with custom tea blends, classic cocktails and housemade finger sandwiches and pastries — at the Hotel Healdsburg .

When and where: “Light Up the Plaza” continues in Healdsburg’s Plaza in December and Janaury. https://www.artinhealdsburg.com/new-year-s-light-archway.
