They have a motto reading “Talk minus Action equals Zero”. They’ve worked with Jello Biafra and released music on his record label. Their original drummer left to join Black Flag and they’ve had members called Randy Rampage, Chuck Biscuits (the aforementioned drummer, who’s also worked with Circle Jerks and Danzig), Dimwit and, simply, Shithead. Yes, Vancouver’s own D.O.A are a hardcore punk band through and through, to the extent that their album Hardcore ’81 (named for its year of release) is thought to have coined the term “hardcore punk” as a whole. Let’s be honest, however little time you have for genre names and other assorted labels, that’s pretty godamn punk. One of the main ways they earn their stripes as a Punk bands Punk band however is in their raucous, ridiculously tight live shows. There isn’t really much else to it, just tight, focused and ear bleedingly loud renditions of tracks from their eighteen album back catalogue. There are no ridiculous stage gimmicks or time wasted preaching about any of the bands admittedly right on activism, but D.O.A are traditionalists to the core and any fan can talk to them either at a concert or online about anything else the band are involved with. However, live, it all comes second to the music, which is influential, unforgettable and truly worthy of the band who gave the world the term Hardcore punk.

Canada’s legendary Punk Kings, who helped spread punk rock counterculture around the world, approach a momentous milestone. For nearly 25 years D.O.A. has been happily slashing away at all manner of philosophical enemies. They’ve travelled the globe almost continuously since they formed in 1978; they released their first snarling piece of vinyl, the "Disco Sucks" EP in June of that year. That slab of plastic opened the door to international prominence, riots, rip-off record companies and three generations of fans.

In 1981, D.O.A. made the term "hardcore" their own and pushed it into the common vernacular with their legendary album "Hardcore 81" and subsequent tours. Consequently, D.O.A. has been cited as a major influence for tons of bands ranging from The Red Hot Chili Peppers to Green Day to Rancid to The Offspring. They followed that up with their ground breaking EP "War on 45" and "Bloodied But Unbowed."

D.O.A. has always worn their politics on their sleeves. They’ve done a lot shit disturbing along the way. They’ve been harassed and busted and survived all that crap. D.O.A.’s blatant slogan,TALK-ACTION=0 sums it all up.

The stuff the band’s worked on through the years; they’ve played benefits for Rape Relief, anti-racism, rock-for brains, anti-globalization, OXFAM, first nations rights, anti censorship and environmental causes amongst many others.

D.O.A.’s sound and philosophy has been held together by Canada’s Godfather of punk Joey "Shithead" Keithley’s songwriting, singing and guitar playing. D.O.A.’s sound, although always rooted in punk rock, has managed to create a fair bit of consternation for those who would like to choose musical boxes. It’s punk, but it incorporates rock n’ roll, reggae, metal, and ska. Whatever the hell their sound is, it’s pulled out a "Yeah, that’s the shit!" from the likes of Henry Rollins, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sonic Youth, Jello Biafra, Bif Naked, John Doe, Randy Bachman, Dave Grohl, Pete Seeger, Yada, Yada, Yada, you get the picture.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary, Sudden Death has released the definitive D.O.A. album, "War and Peace," a 25-track compilation of D.O.A.’s greatest recorded moments. War and Peace starts at the roots of "Disco Sucks", "The Enemy" and "Liar For Hire" right through to their modern blitzkrieg sound of "Dead Men Tell No Tales" and "Just Say No To The WTO."

D.O.A. will blast through live shows with their new rock solid lineup of Joey, Floor Tom Jones on drums and bassist Randy Rampage. Watch for extensive touring in Canada and around the world in 2007 and beyond.

In 2003, Shithead’s first book "I Shithead,a life in punk" came out on Arsenal Pulp Press. It is a definitive and raunchy look at punk and the spread of counter culture throughout western society. Sudden Death has also released "Let’s Start The Action," an electronic tribute to D.O.A. performed by 20 different artists from around the world and inspired by the anti-globalization movement. As well, Sudden Death has recently re-released D.O.A.’s 1st two albums"Something Better Change" and "Hardcore 81", recently picked as two of the top 5 Canadian punk rock albums of all time. A full length documentary on D.O.A. "Talk-Action=0" is being developed by filmmaker Marcus Rogers [The Widower].

D.O.A. has travelled a long, tough road that has taken them around the world and the raw energy continues. The band has never been more active, having recently released their second DVD, D.O.A.’s "Greatest Shits" and a split album with metal legend Thor entitled "Are U Ready". Recently Mayor Larry Campbell of Vancouver declared December 21st to be "D.O.A. Day" in Vancouver. The band has also been featured in punk and political books published around the world.

Come join in the power and non-compromise that is D.O.A.

About d.o.a..

D.O.A. is a hardcore punk band from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. They are often referred to as the "founders" of hardcore punk, along with Black Flag, Bad Brains, Angry Samoans, the Germs, Negative Trend, and Middle Class. Their second album Hardcore '81 was thought by many to have been the first actual reference to the second wave of the American punk sound as hardcore. Singer/guitarist Joey "Shithead" Keithley is the only founding member to have stayed in the band throughout its entire history, with original bassist Randy Rampage returning to the band twice after his original departure. D.O.A. has often released music on Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles Records, and they have released an album titled Last Scream of the Missing Neighbors. D.O.A. is known for its outspoken political opinions and has a history of performing for many causes and benefits. Its slogan is "Talk Minus Action Equals Zero." The band's lyrics and imagery frequently advocate anti-racism, anti-globalization, freedom of speech, and the environment. Founder Joe Keithley is also the founder of Sudden Death Records which has released music by D.O.A. and several other bands including Pointed Sticks and Young Canadians.

Deep Purple and Yes Kick Off 2024 Tour: Set Lists, Videos

Deep Purple and Yes launched their joint 2024 tour on Wednesday night in Hollywood, Florida. See set lists and videos below.

The =1 More Time tour celebrates Deep Purple’s latest studio album, also called =1 , and 50 years of “Smoke on the Water.” (Frontman Ian Gillan, in a recent interview with UCR, said he’d have preferred if the tour was called “Unleashed – not that it matters. It’s a Deep Purple tour and we’re happy.”)

Yes’ latest tour follows 2023’s Mirror to the Sky , but the group stuck with old favorites. Their most recent release was an expanded 4CD or limited-edition white vinyl anniversary box set of 1994’s Talk .

Highlights from the evening included Deep Purple’s live debut of “Show Me” from =1 . Meanwhile, Yes offered the tour debuts of “Yours Is No Disgrace,” “Clap” and “Siberian Khatru.”

Sharing the stage wasn’t always so easy. Deep Purple and Yes were both on the bill at the National Jazz and Blues Festival in 1970 , a precursor to the U.K.s Reading Festival held at Plumpton in East Sussex, England – and both assumed they’d be the closing act.

Promoter Jack Barrie from London’s legendary Marquee Club stepped in to negotiate a truce. “Jack said, ‘Guys, would you mind going on a bit earlier? I don’t want to push you, but it would help me and it would help the crowd,'” Ian Gillan remembered.

He said Deep Purple responded, “Yeah, sure. Okay, no worries.” But then co-founding Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore set fire to his amplifiers on stage – causing an explosion .

Watch Yes Perform ‘Roundabout’

Joint North American dates with Deep Purple and Yes continue through September, with key stops in Houston, Detroit, Chicago, Toronto and Montreal, among others. Deep Purple appears as a solo act on Aug. 19 in Oklahoma. Their new LP was preceded by a 3CD/LP/Blu-ray super deluxe edition of Machine Head , home to “Smoke on the Water” as well as “Highway Star” and “Space Truckin.'”

Bôa

British alt-rock band Bôa has lived more than a few lifetimes. The group comprised of vocalist Jasmine Rodgers, and musicians Alex Caird and Lee Sullivan, got its start as a casual jam session between local musicians in Rodgers’ home studio in the early ’90s. Rodgers wasn’t even technically in the band at the time, but the upstairs studio they rehearsed in was attached to the home she shared with her brother Steve, and her father Paul Rodgers, singer for the classic rock bands Free and Bad Company.

The future of fast: a special report on free streaming, michelle yeoh will not appear in 'avatar 3,' says james cameron: 'she's in 4 and 5', popular on variety.

Today, “Duvet” is also the reason Bôa has reformed some 18 years after they put out their final record. The song has found a niche audience on social media and has earned seven million streams per week so far this year. It’s been used as the soundtrack for over 250,000 TikTok videos — that’s not counting the sped-up or remixed versions — and it’s also the reason the band is gearing up to release a new album for its new-found fanbase.

“It’s equal parts delicious and terrifying,” Rodgers says. Caird adds, “We’re so happy but at the same, there’s a desire to really get it right. Because it’s a brilliant opportunity. And I think we’re just really grateful that people still want to hear new material and support us. We want to give them something good.”

In the years that came after “Get There,” Bôa remained relatively inactive, with all of the previous members going on to pursue other interests or their own solo careers. Rodgers had been a solo musician for the last 12 years and in between that time, she earned her degree in psychology. Sullivan was splitting his days between music and family, while Caird was off teaching guitar.

What happened next could only be the product of algorithmic synergy. “Duvet” by Bôa began its renaissance online in August of 2021. The band noticed the track was starting to take off when it was sampled in a song by Spanish urban-trap singer and producer Yung Beef, who worked with producers Metro Boomin and Southside in the early stages of their career.

After the track proved to have longer momentum, labels and publishing companies reached out to the band with the proposition of deals but in the end, it was Sameer Sadhu — vice president of A&R at Nettwerk Music — who caught them “at the right time for us,” says Caird. “He seemed to be the most honest and out.”

“It was a time when we were still trying to understand what the value of TikTok meant,” adds Sadhu who discovered “Duvet” on a viral songs chart. “I saw TikTok as a momentum starter, and I knew there were alternative artists going viral that would be a better fit at an indie label. If we kept to our principles of why we sign and how we built on momentum as a label, we could really add long-term value that wasn’t just about a moment.”

During their first call together, Bôa relayed their story in full: the deep, borderline familial history, and “Duvet’s” spaceless resonance. “It was clear… how much they embraced it — the anti-TikTok narrative to an extent — where this was a platform giving life to genuine songwriters in a brand new format,” says Sadhu. “They were truly so happy that people were discovering and relating to their song 20 years later, and to me, there’s a lot of romance in that, which I think sometimes we overlook.”

“He also was encouraging us to record new music and it became even more exciting,” adds Rodgers in a chipper tone. “We were already jamming out on our own and had come to the consensus that ‘We can still read each other. We still enjoy this.'”

Bôa’s new record is said to be released later this year and houses a variety of sounds, but a majority of those new songs started as jam sessions, which still sound as they always have. “We’ve been playing and having a lot of fun. It feels natural and good,” says Lee, adding that it “definitely [has] a large connection to the last album.”

With the band active on social media, the group has grown quite the fanbase — many of whom weren’t even alive when the band recorded “Duvet.” “I like to think that the song’s magic relies on its level of relatability — it’s quite an emotional song,” says Caird.

“Still to this day, the theme of identity is something I’m always writing about and I think that resonates with some people,” adds Rodgers. “And I think that’s lovely. Because when I was growing up as a mixed East Asian child, I had a lot of questions as to why things were the way they were and I think those themes are timeless. I hope people enjoy it.”
