School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SAST), Shirpur is the first School of Agriculture under SVKM’s NMIMS to be started in 2019 to bring in prosperity to the small and marginal farm holders. The School focuses on teaching, research and outreach, the three arms of agricultural research and education to meet the stakeholders’ aspirations with more participatory devolutions. The School has air-conditioned class rooms with smart boards, 117 acres of farm, and fully-equipped laboratories. The integrated campus set-up provides an opportunity for the students to get exposed to engineering & pharmacy faculties and thus promote holistic development. The robust agricultural education curriculum in line with national agricultural education systems as recommended by the ICAR provides a platform where knowledge, resources and opportunities to address aspects of enhanced farm productivity, profitability and sustainable livelihoods. Agriculture is my passion and my way of life. Also, agriculture is the backbone of India for safeguarded food-, nutritional- and livelihood security. On one side, I see that the growth of modern agriculture at an astounding pace making India self-sustained in food grain production. But, on the flipside, I also see the pathetic condition of the debt-ridden, resource-poor, and highly vulnerable small and marginal farm holder, even sometimes committing suicides, due to non-reach and practice of this new knowledge to them.

In this setting, considering the strength of SVKM in imparting meaningful education successfully, the School of Agricultural Sciences & Technology was established in Shirpur in 2019, the prime agricultural belt of Maharashtra with a lot of agricultural diversity and also associated glitches. As water is the prime commodity for successful agriculture, through the concept of "Shirpur Pattern”, astounding groundwater recharge was realized by conserving water from every stream. From this School, I envisage to prepare agricultural graduates for the future food- and nutritional security of the Country. They can also ensure to risk-proof the farming community of this region, help them reap better productivity and profitability from modern agricultural systems to bring back their cheer and pride.

India needs trained agricultural graduates to meet the needs of more than 60% of the farmers depending on agriculture as their primary profession. National Agricultural Research and Education Systems (NARES) have grown to towering heights over years to take the country from a ‘ship to mouth’ position in late 50’s to a proud ‘self-reliant Food grain nation’. Globalization of education systems has resulted in enhanced knowledge management systems and skilling of human resources through novel learning systems.

Empowering the farming community with new knowledge sets is a daunting task considering the agro-ecological diversity and illiteracy levels. The School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology has recruited highly qualified faculty from different parts of the nation who bring with them their regional knowledge flavour. Fortunately, Indian agriculture has a lot of Indigenous Traditional Knowledge developed out of vast experience over generations which could benefit farmers, if validated in the regional perspective.

Climate change is emerging as a threat to our agricultural systems and there is an urgent need to build awareness among farmers and also develop risk-averting adaptation strategies. I expect that the School to train the undergraduates to holistically address the issues of effective knowledge management systems, be exemplary educators, conduct top-notch research to develop adaptable cost-effective technologies, primary- and secondary value addition to agricultural commodities, and agri-preneurship skills.

Under the able leadership of our visionary Hon’ble Chancellor, Shri Amrishbhai Patel, the School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology was established in 2019 under the aegis of prestigeous NMIMS Deemed to be University at Shirpur, Dhule district, Maharashtra.

The Schools aims to prepare well-trained and highly skilled agricultural graduates.

The curriculum designed by the ICAR infused with regional requirements, recent advances and technologies is taught by the School for enhanced farm productivity, profitability and sustainable livelihoods of the farming community.

The four-year B.Sc (Hons.) Agriculture program is founded on three-pronged Education-Research-Extension approach and provides the students in-depth knowledge and intellectual breadth required to pursue higher studies; hone the skills for innovation and day-to-day problem solving; be market-ready and agri-preneurship development. The academic journey on- and off-the campus coupled with myriad of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities will function as an enabling platform with progressive learning from basics to advanced courses.

An optimized blend of theory and practical sessions will focus on ‘ learning by doing ’ in well equipped laboratories and a huge farm.

The uniqueness of the School is to provide hands on training in experiential learning modules and a two-month long industry internship to get a thorough insight into the functionin go of an industry.

The School creates summer internships as an additional opportunity of learning. For this purpose, the School has entered into MoUs with the industries. The curriculum is revised from time to time based on the recommendation of the Board of Studies duly approved by the Academic Council.

Our novel training systems have resulted in significantly high placements of the very maiden batch and many alumni are pursuing their higher studies in India and abroad.

A well-trained agricultural graduate can not only make his career but also contribute for sustainable livelihoods of vast majority of the small and marginal farmers and bring happiness in their lives.

Dr. Suseelendra Desai is M.Sc (Ag) in Plant Pathology  (Gold Medallist)   from University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad  and Doctorate from Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University. He has more than 3 decades of experience in the field of Agriculture Sciences, Crop Sciences, Plant Pathology and outreach to stakeholders.

Dr. Desai was associated with ICAR-Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture as Head of Crop Sciences Division. Dr. Desai has been actively involved in research & academics as Principal Scientist, Senior Scientist & Scientist, at ICAR-Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture and Directorate of Groundnut Research. He was also a Visiting Scientist at International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics. He has also gained knowledge with regards to Agricultural finance as Agricultural Finance Officer with Bank of India. He was a DAAD post-doctoral fellow during 1991-1994 at Justus Liebig University, Germany, followed by DAAD Re-invitation Fellow in 2007, 2011 and 2015.

At Directorate of Groundnut Research, he developed integrated management of foliar diseases of groundnut and HACCP-based integrated aflatoxin contamination management packages in groundnut and demonstrated in participatory mode in 3 states of India. He identified promising strains of  Trichoderma , formulated and field-tested for management of stem rot and aflatoxin contamination in groundnut.

During 2004 to 2021, at ICAR-CRIDA, he harnessed microbial diversity for microbe-mediated crop health management. He identified "Multi-nutrient tasking microbes" possessing biocontrol ability as well and commercialized them through Integrated Bioresources Centre, ICAR-CRIDA. He identified abiotic stress tolerant bioinoculants and characterized molecular basis of tolerance. He studied in detail the climate change impacts on plant pathogens and biocontrol agents.

He has handled several externally funded projects on basic and applied aspects in agriculture and conferred with several distinctions. He has guided 4 doctoral students 3 Masters students; and more than 40 student interns. He has authored 77 research papers; >30 book chapters; delivered >100 keynote/lead/invited lectures in national and international seminars and symposia; 12 technical bulletins; 10 popular articles; and edited 5 books.

He has number of accolades and rewards to his credit in the field of Agricultural Sciences. He is a Member of Scientific Panels "Microbial Hazards of Food" and "Contaminants in Food Chain" of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India since 2009. He is a Fellow of several professional societies and recipient of Agriculture Today "Life Time Achievement Award for Eco-agriculture 2021" and "Dr. A.N. Mukhopadhyay Oration Lecture Award”.

After completing 34 years of successful career in Indian Council of Agricultural Research, he had a brief Industry stint in Varsha Biosciences and Technology India Private Limited as Vice President (Research & Business Development). In October 2021, he joined NMIMS as Dean, School of Agricultural Sciences & Technology, Shirpur.

The father of Green Revolution in India Dr. MS Swaminathan elucidates Agricultural Education in a distinct fashion. He states that Education for Agriculture means teaching a whole lot of allied disciplines along-with agricultural sciences encompassing several related occupations and thus, enhances farmers’ income and profitability. Towards this vision, aspirant students should be taught basic as well as applied sciences and business management principles for building their own future. Education for Agriculture provides opportunities to learn basic agricultural skills and knowledge, occupation training and retraining, and professional growth and development. As a formal education program, agricultural education focuses on three major components: formal classroom instructions, field experience programs, and project management and managerial skill development. These components are delivered through a competency-based curriculum in the context of agriculture. This is essential to stay abreast with the fast-moving developments in technology, science, business management, and an array of related skills that benefit agricultural operations.

India essentially require modern and applied system of Education for Agriculture, so that our farmers are better equipped to handle the challenges of globalization. With the recent entry of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the sector, many MNCs have forayed into the segment with a multitude of agro-products. Subsequently this has resulted as a threat to Indian farmers who lack professional expertise to better deal with the transition. Hence, we need to generate agri-professionals for guiding our farmers to uplift their standard of living through economic benefits.

A transcendent level of sharing knowledge will pave way for food as well as nutritional security to the population. This is collateral with the economic security and women empowerment as skills and awareness on crop diversification, value addition, inclusion of animal husbandry, forestry and fisheries. The future of agricultural education is bright as More than 60 percent of the Indian population is involved in agriculture. Indian agriculture is serving national as well as global population and its very existence requires the services of well-educated people in the agricultural sciences. Hence, we need to provide theoretical and experiential learning as well as personal leadership development training to pave the way for modern agriculture.

About B.S c . Aviation

The Bachelor of Science in Aviation at NMIMS, aligned with the latest NEP (National Education Policy) guidelines, is a comprehensive program designed to equip students with in-depth aviation industry knowledge. Offering multiple exit options, this DGCA-approved curriculum covers aircraft maintenance, air traffic control, airport and airline management, and flight operations.

The program provides the theoretical foundation for a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) and insights into ATC, airport management, and airline operations. Combining academic rigor with industry-relevant training, the course prepares students for careers as line technicians, flight dispatchers, load planners, and flight attendants.

Case Study Approach

The School of Business Management (SBM) stands out for its case study-based courses. For this, we have been actively engaging industry and academia. Areas like Finance, Marketing, Human Resources and Behavioural Sciences, Operations and Decision Sciences are conducted using case studies, making the course more relevant.

Our mentorship program helps the outstation students to ease into their new environs effortlessly. This includes a group of students which is put under a faculty who acts as the mentor. Not only this, the Buddy Concept, where a final year student is assigned to a freshman is a reassuring move.

Corporate Projects

Our IIPC cell promotes industry-academia linkage, which goes a long way in ensuring learning by applying theoretical concepts learned in the classroom on live industry projects. These corporate projects vary from 1-3 months.

An inclusive and enlightening event, Pargana, held in the month of November, is the annual management festival of NMIMS. This is the occasion when corporate heavyweights descend upon the campus to ideate and exchange views on a topic of national and international importance.

Special Training

It is our aim to keep our students up to date with the latest in technology and computer programs. With this in view, regular sessions are conducted in the form of tutorials for specific marketing, finance and statistical tools. SPSS, Advanced MS, Excel, IRS, Six-Sigma Certifications etc, are some of the topics included in these sessions. Not only this, the School also lays emphasis on corporate/simulation games/contests/events to stimulate a dynamic learning environment.

Summer Internships

Students of the MBA programs have to undergo a two-month summer internship at a corporate facility. This is done to help students apply their learning in practical situations.

There is nothing more sacrosanct than a library in any educational institute. We, at NMIMS, take it seriously. Our library has evolved with the times and has transformed from a traditional library with manual transactions to a digital library. Our students and faculty have access to NMIMS’s highly advanced library not only in the library premises, but also on the desktops from any part of the world. The Library Catalogue (OPAC), which is currently on intranet, gives detailed information about library sources, including thousands of books and e-journals, hundreds of journals, innumerable databases and technical reports with different search tools, making it easy for its users. For the uninitiated, the library arranges regular awareness programmes on use of electronic resources too.

We at NMIMS provide efficient online services to our students to save their precious time. We also train students about the online medium.

Apart from the library catalogue (OPAC) that gives detailed information about our library sources, the electronic resources also include access to a vast corporate database covering numerous listed and unlisted companies, trend analysis, funds flow, financial ratios and economic statistics.

Blackboard facility

The online Blackboard Facility aids our longstanding objective to standardize the pedagogy. Our students can now download their standard courseware, exercises and assignments as also extra courseware. The automated and personalized facility ensures that only the courseware applicable to each student is made available to him.

Campus connect

Students receive urgent and important messages via SMS. They need to register the numbers with the School to avail of this facility.

Placement dashboard

An online placement management system to manage all activities related to placement is made available to students. This automated facility enables the rigorous exercise of student placements to be conducted in a smooth fashion.

An internal web mail facility for students and employees of NMIMS is available on campus.

All laptops can be configured at the Asian Paints Computer Centre on the ground floor in the campus, thanks to our WiFi network.

Our IIPC cell, with its objective to promote industry-academia linkage, places emphasis on learning by testing the theoretical concepts learned in the classroom on real time industry projects. These corporate projects vary from 1-3 months.

Since God is in the details, we have pulled out all the astops for the convenience of our students. Our campus has:

• Air-conditioned classrooms with PC and LCD projectors integrated with campus wide network.
• Fiber optic network backbone and 100 MBPS Ethernet Technology connecting all classrooms and departments.
• 45 MBPS shared leased line internet connectivity round the clock.
• Wireless Hotspots.
• Branded high end servers and NAS storage systems for maintaining campus wide database and connectivity.
• A hardware firewall to protect the entire network.
• Academic ERP-Integrated Institute Management System covering Online Transaction Processing and M.I.S. from Admission to Evaluation, Integrating Library, Purchase & Accounts.
• Each student is equipped with a branded laptop.
• The Computer Lab on the second floor houses more than 60 computers, and one can find students there at all times taking print outs or working on their projects. In addition to that, there are plugs available throughout the campus and students make the most of it by working in the quad and the zee area throughout the day and night.
• First phase of SAP has been implemented.

Campus Network

The Campus Network is based on a fiber optic backbone and 100 MBPS Ethernet technologies. It covers the institute, classrooms, library, faculty and staff. The intranet has 425 computers which are interconnected by a fiber optic network. Every classroom is equipped with PC and LCD projectors integrated with the campus wide network.

Wireless Hotspots

In addition to the wired network, the entire campus has a parallel wireless network. You will be able to access the entire networked resources from virtually anywhere in the campus.

Internet@ 10 mbps

All members on the intranet have access to Internet 24 hours a day through 45 MBPS shared leased line from SVKM, of which 10 MBPS is exclusively used for NMIMS. The Internet bandwidth is being enhanced every year. This has been a pioneering effort by NMIMS.

Computer Centre & Services

The Computer centre has over 60 Dell & HP PCs in LAN, Printers, Scanners, DVD burners, Digital Cameras. The Computer Resource centre provides various network-based services such as Internet, Groupware, Database, Email, Printing, Laptops & LCD Projectors.

Software Library

The software environment includes SQL Server DBMS, SPSS, Rational Enterprise suite, MS Office (Campus Wide License), MS Projects, Simulation packages, Visual and Object- Oriented Languages like Visual Basic & Visual C++ and Java.

Integrated Institute Management System

NMIMS has deployed an Integrated Institute Management System designed to track and manage the day-to-day activities of the University. It is a complete automated administration solution to enhance the productivity of the staff. This system acts as an Online Transaction Processing system and can handle large volumes of data and the Management Information System provided for management reporting. The system covers modules such as student and registration, employee/faculty details, attendance recording and reporting, timetable/schedules, examination and results, library management, integrated accounts/inventory, payroll, purchase and fixed assets. The most significant benefit of this system has been the creation of a central repository of data on students, faculty, staff, programs and courses which can be seen by those who have the access rights.

The Road Ahead

These initiatives have placed the University on an exalted level where it can now expand to a new horizon and act as a model for the Indian academic institutions. The University certainly has the potential to generate numerous knowledge hubs within the current framework.

The Induction Program Inaugural Ceremony for first-year engineering students at SVKM’s NMIMS, MPSTME, Shirpur was held on July 13, 2024, with great enthusiasm and spirit to welcome the new batch of first year engineering students. The first-year induction program is scheduled to run from July 13, 2024, to July 20, 2024. The one week induction program aims to acquaint students with essential academic regulations, evaluation systems, and campus life protocols.

Dr. Venkatadri Marriboyina, Associate Dean, MPSTME, Shirpur, addressed the gathering, warmly welcoming the new batch of engineering students and their parents. He advised students to stay informed about global events and participate actively in the various clubs available on the NMIMS Shirpur campus to broaden their knowledge and perspectives. He advised students to step out of their comfort zones to progress and to always work hard for success. He encouraged students to seek guidance from faculty members, respect society, and practice self-reflection before judging others. He also addressed parents, acknowledging them as the first teachers of their children, while teachers are the second parents. He emphasized the collaborative role of teachers and parents in the student’s development. He expressed his confidence in the students’ potential and voiced his hope to see them achieve their best, noting that their success would bring pride and happiness to everyone.

This was followed by an inspiring welcome address by Dr. Sunita Patil, Director, NMIMS, Shirpur campus who highlighted the rich legacy and achievements of NMIMS. She emphasized the institution’s consistent efforts towards the development of students, noting that NMIMS has become a preferred academic destination. She outlined several innovative initiatives, including the integration of GenAI. She advised students to take their academic journey seriously and highlighted the importance of the Student Resource Book (SRB), which includes discipline rules, guidelines, and the internal continuous assessment system. She assured that the institution is committed to grooming students for successful placements but stressed that students must excel to secure good job packages. She also addressed parents, urging them to maintain regular communication with their children. Parents were asked to attend parent-teacher meetings to monitor their child’s progress. The campus offers various facilities, including a gym, sports areas, a music room, and a movie theater, and parents were encouraged to motivate their children to utilize these facilities.

The inaugural ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to everyone involved in organizing the event. Mrs. Rita Patel, In-charge, NMIMS Shirpur campus, graced the occasion as the chief guest. Mr. Rahul Dande, Chief Accountant and Administrator, MPTP, Shirpur Campus, was also present during the Inaugural Program.

The first day of the Induction Program concluded with an interactive session with parents. This session addressed various queries and concerns of the parents, assuring them of the supportive and nurturing environment at NMIMS Shirpur Campus. Parents inquired about the types of competitions available for sports and cultural activities, provisions for students missing classes due to valid reasons, and the preparation and support provided for placements.

Parents also sought information on how faculty members stay updated and the extent of industry exposure students receive. They asked about methods for monitoring student attendance and performance updates, measures in place to manage stress and discourage unproductive activities, and activities scheduled for weekends. Other queries included procedures to ensure academic integrity, such as preventing the use of resources like ChatGPT for assignments. Also inquired about support for students planning higher education abroad, criteria for campus placements, and the scheduling of parent-teacher meetings. Overall, parents appreciated the comprehensive responses provided by NMIMS Shirpur Campus, highlighting their confidence in the institution’s commitment to student welfare and academic excellence.

The Induction Inaugural ceremony for first year engineering students was a resounding success, leaving both students and parents feeling confident and excited about the journey ahead at NMIMS Shirpur.
