Recent tour reviews

It was fair to wonder when the Pavement went on hiatus after touring in support of their final album Terror Twilight if fans would ever get to see them live again.

It took a number of years, with band members scattered across the country and participating in multiple new projects, but the band have begun performing live again. Although time has passed, the group easily capture the slacker majesty of their heyday as kings of the '90s indie scene.

If the band and audience are a little bit grayer these days, that's OK too. Indeed, a surprising number of people in the audience at a Pavement show are likely far too young to have seen them the first time around and appear to be there to take in the experience as new, rather than relive past glories. The band's sprawling, two hours-plus setlist leaves no one disappointed.

Mercurial frontman Steve Malkmus (whose departure for a solo career shelved the band originally) seems especially energized at these shows, bantering with the audience and belting out should-have-been hits like “Cut Your Hair” and “Stereo” with surprising and obvious joy.

The band's once loose sound has been tightened up considerably, as well. That being said, when the group kicks in to the shambolic, shaggy genius of “Summer Babe” (usually reserved for the encore), they still play fast, loud and jagged and demonstrate why they remain one of the most exciting groups of the past twenty years.

Pavement Are Back: Indie Rock Greats Add North American Leg to 2022 Reunion Tour

  • By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Pavement have expanded their 2022 reunion plans to include a North American tour next fall.

The run will precede a previously announced European trek, and it’s set to kick off Sept. 27 at the Balboa Theatre in San Diego, California, and wrap Oct. 11 at ACL Live at the Moody Theater in Austin, Texas. The trek will include several multi-night stands in cities like Los Angeles San Francisco, Brooklyn, and Atlanta.

Tickets for all shows will go on sale this Friday, Nov. 5, with full information available on Pavement’s website .

Every state's song at the dnc roll call to nominate harris, michelle obama: who's going to tell trump the presidency might be 'one of those black jobs', jennifer lopez files for divorce from ben affleck after two years of marriage.

Pavement first teased this reunion all the way back in June 2019 , announcing at the time that they would reunite for Barcelona’s Primavera Sound festival in 2020, as well as a handful of other European dates. Those shows were eventually called off because of the pandemic, and it wasn’t until this past September that Pavement confirmed they still planned to return to the road in 2022 (only European dates were announced at that time, however).

Pavement broke up in 1999 and reunited for the first time in 2010. Last March, right before the band’s second reunion plans were scuttled, frontman Stephen Malkmus told Rolling Stone about what it was like getting the band back together: “If people who are fans of Pavement might like to know what it was like from the singer’s perspective…If it was fun for y’all, that’s great, but for me it was not only fun to embody those songs, it was also fun from the material perspective. We traveled really nicely. It was this smooth thing compared to what I remember Pavement being like, I guess. [Back then], we existed on a shoestring budget, and it was wearying. It felt like there was seemingly no end in Pavement. It was just wearing me down, living in an infinite band thing. So this was like, ‘We are just going to play these fuckin’ songs together, we like each other, and so this will be familiar.’”

Pavement Announces 2022 North American Tour Dates

Jacob Uitti

Updated:

California-born rock band Pavement has officially announced their new 2022 North American tour dates—and there are many!

Videos by American Songwriter

The “Cut Your Hair” group shared the news via their social media, tweeting, “Yup: 2022 Tour Dates on sale THIS Friday! http://Pavementband.com “

The 42-date trek kicks off on September 7, 2022, in San Diego, making stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, and more before heading overseas to London, Stockholm, Berlin, and Amsterdam. The tour will wrap for two nights in Dublin, Ireland on November 10 -11.

Having initially called it quits in 1999, the band announced their reunion earlier this year for a string of European tour dates.

“We’re just doing the live shows,” said Malkmus then. “I just think we should try and be like the 1990s—that’s the goal, and to the best of my ability, tap into the vibe of what the band was. It’s pretty much just pure nostalgia in my mind, but I want to try and get that right.”

Pavement reveals what they learned from Sonic Youth, R.E.M. and Echo & the Bunnymen

As the indie rock legends gear up for their 30th anniversary reunion tour, the band members recall great bands they've shared the stage with.

Pavement reveals what they learned from Sonic Youth, R.E.M. and Echo & the Bunnymen

“They’re just great guys, all of them. And they even gave us an extra couple hundred bucks for gas money to help get us home when we were flat broke at the end of the tour,” Jack White told me about Pavement back in 2009, recalling the then unknown White Stripes’ opening slot on the tail end of Pavement’s Brighten The Corners tour. The White Stripes’ experience wasn’t unusual. Mogwai ’s Stuart Braithwaite once said, “Pavement would go out to dinner every night and let us eat off their deli tray, which we really appreciated because we were poor and hungry.” It’s a common refrain about Pavement, and it reflects a generous ethos learned from their own heroes, including R.E.M. , Sonic Youth , and Echo & the Bunnymen .

While swapping emails with guitarist Scott Kannberg about the focus for this interview, it was clear he didn’t want to rehash Pavement’s recent Terror Twilight reissue or dissect the band’s upcoming fall reunion tour . But when it was suggested we discuss the bands who’ve supported Pavement over the years, and the bands they learned from early in their career, he jumped at the chance.

The A.V. Club caught up with Kannberg, bassist Mark Ibold, and percussionist/keyboardist Bob Nastanovich for a lengthy discussion about supporting acts, hilarious tangents on the band’s often shambolic live shows, and some keen insight into why Pavement’s casual genius resonates as much now as it did during their original run in the 1990s.

Mark Ibold: Yeah, I mean, we were sort of influenced by Sonic Youth in that respect, as they always had interesting bands playing with them, us included. [ Laughs ] Just choosing bands that wouldn’t be the obvious choice. I’m thinking about US Maple. They were so loud and dissonant and experimental. Royal Trux was another band like that.

AVC: I recall Jennifer Herrema of Royal Trux saying a few years back on social media that she wasn’t a Pavement fan, and Bob [Nastanovich] responded that he was fine with that. I get the impression all of you guys were. You loved them even if they weren’t into your music.

MI: Yeah, we were Royal Trux fans, and they played some great shows. But I’ve got a funny story about them touring with us. There was one time they’d had a tough show in a small town, maybe Norman, Oklahoma, and they were playing to a young audience who probably barely knew Pavement, and there were some dumb dumbs yelling at them, and they were bothered by it. So Bob was doing whatever pre-show stuff he does during their set, pacing and drinking. I’d been watching and it was tough. I was kind of grimacing. So shortly after their set ended, Jennifer came into the dressing room not feeling so great, and Bob walked right up to her and said “Great set, Jennifer,” and gave her a big bear hug, and walked away before she could say anything. [ Laughs ] The next day our tour manager wanted to talk to us, and Neil from Royal Trux had said to him that they didn’t want to hear any comments about their shows from anyone in Pavement again. Everybody looked at one another and said, “What?” Except for me. I’d seen what had happened and explained what had gone down. [ Laughs ]

AVC: You’ve run the gamut of openers, from bands like The Royal Trux, who never had a whole lot of mainstream appeal, all the way to The White Stripes, who became massive shortly after playing with you.

MI: Wow, I’d forgotten The White Stripes even played shows with us! The first day we played with them we ate near the venue and came back to hear them soundcheck and they sounded like Zeppelin with Jack White’s singing and the guitar riffs. And then we walked in and they looked like teenagers! They also had another guy, from the Greenhornes in their band who was amazing [Jack Lawrence].

AVC: What about the bands you played with back in 2010. It seemed like you chose a lot of the ones who played NYC. Any memories of those shows?

MI: Wow, there was Times New Viking, The Beets, Thee Oh Sees, and a lot of others. But I actually missed most of their sets because I’d just had a baby, so I was really busy and really only able to play our set and then leave.

AVC: Are you excited to tour again? It’s hard to believe it’s been over 10 years since the last reunion in 2010.

MI: Well, this tour isn’t gonna be perfect because we haven’t done a whole lot in a while, and we’re not in the groove yet. So there’ll be mistakes. And the COVID policies are driving us nuts. It’s like nothing that’s ever taken place before. This has changed everything with our crew and the protocol and how everything’s working, and the quarantine. That kinda shit never happened before. It’s really frustrating. But I’m really happy to be playing shows at all, and hopefully things will run smoothly once we’re out on the road.

AVC: There’s almost a mythology surrounding you guys, which is great. And you have such a young following. People are so excited for these shows.

Scott Kannberg: Well, bands like Wilco and The Pixies come around every year or two so there’s not the same excitement associated with that, but we’re doing it every 10 years, and that’s more exciting I think.

AVC: You remind me of R.E.M. through the years in a lot of ways, exposing your fans to great bands they wouldn’t have heard otherwise.

SK: We were lucky to be able to do that. The Dirty Three, Polvo, and US Maple were all bands that we felt really challenged our audience. I mean, all the bands we really loved turned us onto great bands. R.E.M. turned me on to Mission of Burma, Wire, and Big Star. Even the Velvet Underground and Echo and the Bunnymen turned us onto Leonard Cohen and Television. It was all just out there to be discovered differently than it is now. Hopefully on this tour it’s the same kind of idea with these openers.

AVC: Who were your personal choices on this tour? And what was the process like in choosing the bands? You have a lot of different openers this tour.

MI: Yeah, definitely. I chose 75 Dollar Bill, they’re a great band. Steve Gunn is someone I’m happy about also. Weak Signal is a band I picked who are playing Philly. Mike Bones is in that band, and he’s a guy I know well and love. On the West Coast there’s Guerilla Toss, who I think Stephen [Malkmus] chose, and I like them a lot. We’re gonna play a few shows with them. There are a few bands our booking agent and maybe our label chose. Horsegirl’s one of them that I really like.

Bob Nastanovich : Well, we prioritized having young people opening, and I felt like there was a void from 2007–2013 with regards to great female acts, although I might’ve missed them because you can’t hear everything. But now there’s a great myriad of young female artists out there and I chose quite a few of them to play shows with us, like Annalibera and Katy J Pearson. We don’t need to worry about ticket sales for the most part, so we’re excited to give these acts who haven’t played to a lot of people before a bigger audience. It was going to be a different tour for us no matter what since Rebecca Cole’s in the band playing keyboards.

SK: You know, this time was difficult. Last time was a lot easier. Maybe because there are less shows this year it’s more difficult. So we said, “Who do you want to hear from your part of the country?” So there’s a band called Film School and I put out their records and they’re opening for us in San Diego. Then I picked Kelly Stoltz, who’s a buddy of mine. He’s playing L.A. and San Francisco. I left the rest of the country up to the other guys. Mark’s got the Northeast, West had a couple ideas, Bob’s got the Midwest, Malkmus has a few from the Northwest. So hopefully folks will enjoy them. I don’t know who I’m looking forward to the most—well, the bands I picked. Other than those, I’m not sure who else I’m excited for. We’d picked the Goon Sax, a few of us, but they dropped off. [ Laughs ]

AVC: Digressing, but did you know The Delgados reunited?

SK: Oh no, I didn’t. Wow, if I’d known, I would’ve asked them. Hopefully we’ll see them in Scotland. They opened a bunch of shows for us in the ’90s. Mogwai were another Scottish band that played a bunch of shows with us.

AVC: Mogwai were helped immensely by opening for you guys I thought.

SK: Well, they were a great band anyway. But it opened up the wormhole for them. They’re cool kids, well I still consider them to be cool kids. But during Primavera they played last minute, Bob was grabbing them beer and sorting their backstage rider.

AVC: It sounds like Bob has a special relationship with a lot of openers. There was that Royal Trux incident Mark mentioned.

SK: Yeah, they were special little flowers back then. I was recently watching a VHS tape of them opening for us back in the ’90s, and they were out of their minds. They were really great, but they were also really funny. And The White Stripes. They were just kids then, but we were happy to help them get home.

AVC: Jack just spoke so highly of you guys when I interviewed him years ago, as have just about nearly every band I’ve spoken to who have played with you. That’s sort of rare.

SK: Well, we hope COVID doesn’t take away the camaraderie on this tour. We’re obviously older now and we need to preserve our energy so we won’t be hanging out as much. But we’ll still have time to spend with both the bands and fans I hope.

AVC: I was curious to hear any memories you have of your tour early on with Sonic Youth, which seemed formative. You guys seem to treat your openers with the same respect they treated you with.

BN : It’s the only significant tour we’ve done opening. I was outvoted 4–1. I didn’t want to do it. On the tour, there were good things and bad things about it. You’ve got to understand that Pavement could’ve played venues close to that big on their own back then. But we all got along well, and were huge fans. EVOL and Sister changed my life, and “The World Looks Red” is my favorite Sonic Youth song. And I always enjoyed the banter with Thurston, who was hilarious.

In hindsight we had a good time. The highlight was straying from that tour for awhile and playing gigs on our own. One of the most excruciating drives of my life took place then. I drove our van 16 hours from Rome, largely along the Mediterranean Sea. You know that line from Repo Man , “the more you drive the dumber you get?” It was like that. I hoped my bandmates would carry the torch. In Bilbao these rich kids played Yo La Tengo covers, and then we played Barcelona, and there were 300 people there, and at least 100 were snorting cocaine off of spoons. When we finished, there was a Pavement afterparty. I didn’t know Barcelona was a 5 a.m. kind of town, and they played nothing but Pavement songs. Gary Young got carried away with the fan love, and now he was getting it on an international level, but he probably enjoyed it a bit too much. He got really bombed, danced with these kids around a pole, head butted me in the face, and I was out. I had a giant black eye. It was like I’d been punched by Sugar Ray Leonard in 1976. I looked like I’d been in an awful fight.

So when we rejoined Sonic Youth in England a few days later, with my giant bruise, and instead of telling the truth I told Thurston that Gary was getting messed with by the police in Barcelona, and that I helped him get away and ended up getting hit in the process. Thurston said, “Whoa, that’s amazing.” Then later, I watched Sonic Youth’s set from the side stage, and Thurston dedicated “Teenage Riot” to me. [ Laughs ] I didn’t know he’d believed my fiction until then, and he probably thinks I’m more of a badass than I actually am to this day. But they were great to play with.

AVC: Filmmaker Lance Bangs once told me you were the only band he’d ever known who would admit when you’d played a show that sucked. I’ve gotta admit that there were some shows that weren’t so good in the ’90s, but I thought the shows in 2010 were much better. I’m hoping these shows are just as good, if not better.

BN: Well, sometimes Remko our soundman, who was also a good critic, would come back and say, “It was okay tonight, but I got really good sound.” [ Laughs ] But there were some nights that we’d finish and we knew it sounded great and the crowd was great, and there were other nights in the second half of the ’90s when I’d say to myself, “I can’t imagine very many bands playing tonight in the world were worse than this.” [ Laughs ] There were two sides of the coin and that was a part of Pavement’s erratic nature. We had a unique fanbase that, in a way, it was like they were seeing a sports team and rooting for them so they could enjoy the experience. They didn’t know if it was gonna be awful, good, or just okay, but it felt like they were rooting for us to do well so they could at very least be entertained. But Rebecca makes us better than ever, allowing us to play so many songs better than ever and also play 10-12 songs we’ve never played before. She makes us more versatile. We still aren’t badasses, and we don’t affect a swagger. We’re just ourselves, and we hope these shows are fun for our fans.

Pavement Takes the Stage for First Time in 12 Years at Rarities-Filled Tour Warmup Show in L.A.: Concert Review

Pavement

When the iconic indie-rock forebear Pavement last reunited, for a massive tour in 2010, it was a tale of two bands, depending on when you saw them. At the beginning of the run, the lineup was tighter and mightier than ever, playing Coachella with the grit of a band determined to solidify its legacy while collecting paychecks and playing venues exponentially bigger than those it hit during its initial run. If you saw Pavement at the end of the tour, though, you saw a band going through the same issues that led it to break up in the first place. At the Hollywood Bowl on the second-to-last-night of that run, the tension onstage between Stephen Malkmus and the rest of the band was palpable; it was a miracle they got through that show, not to mention the four that followed it, before calling it quits again, seemingly forever.

All of which is to say, just the fact that the band was all on the same stage for the first time in 12 years at the Fonda in Los Angeles on Monday night would have been a special enough moment for the group’s middle-aged fan base to hold onto. (The Fonda gig was a last-minute warmup for a larger tour that begins with a headlining slot at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona in a couple weeks, before a tour that includes a return to L.A. at the much larger Orpheum for three nights in September.) That the band played a sprawling, rarities-laden set at the small hall was just a bonus for the sold-out crowd, many of whom clearly couldn’t believe their eyes and ears at the beginning of long-retired, shambolic rockers like “Transport Is Arranged” (played for the first time since 1996), “Type Slowly” (not played since ’97, and here jammed out into some heady psychedelia) and “Fame Throwa” (an ultra-deep cut from the band’s debut, “Slanted and Enchanted,” and not touched onstage since ’93).

Of course, more recognizable songs made the setlist as well, like the band’s one bona fide hit during its heyday, “Cut Your Hair,” and the unlikely viral smash “Harness Your Hopes.” The band members’ performances fell squarely into well-worn roles: frontman Stephen Malkmus exuding a sort of casual, throwaway vibe during even the most shreddy guitar-rockers; hypeman/percussionist Bob Nastanovic acting almost as a gregarious foil, occasionally even interrupting Malkmus’s thank yous to get in a few words of his own; drummer Steve West and bassist Mark Ibold veering down frequently complex rhythm shifts with can-you-believe-we’re-riding-this-wave eye rolls, and guitarist Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg acting like he was just along for the ride. (Following “Two States,” a song Kannberg sings and has played with various side projects, he said, “Doesn’t that just sound better with this band?”) Touring percussion/keys player Rebecca Cole, a new addition to the group, held her own, hitting the high notes where, ostensibly, Malkmus no longer can and trading winning smiles with Nasanovic.

This is not, and never has been, a band with insane production or dynamics, just six guys (and now gals) playing off-kilter songs in an off-kilter way. But when those songs are so beloved by such a devoted audience, hearing them live again is near-divine; the only question is how long the band itself agrees.

Stephen Malkmus’ The Hard Quartet announce debut album with jangly single ‘Rio’s Song’

The band are also set to play dates in New York, Los Angeles and London this October, and will be touring "extensively" next year

The Hard Quartet

The Hard Quartet have announced their self-titled debut with the jangly new single, ‘Rio’s Song’.

  • READ MORE:  Pavement on ‘Harness Your Hopes’ going viral: “It breathed new life into the band”

Pavement ’s  Stephen Malkmus first shared details of the project in June, after a series of synchronised posts were shared on social media.

The line-up includes Malkmus, Matt Sweeney, Jim White and Emmett Kelly. Today (August 21), they shared their first single, and said in a statement it was their homage to “street rock in the hot afternoon and clowning around with lifer friends in downtown New York City”.

The accompanying music video was shot “guerrilla style” by director Jared Sherbert, and revisits The Rolling Stones ‘ 1981 video for ‘Waiting on a Friend’, recreating it shot-for-shot.

“Both Matt and Stephen individually write music that has soundtracked pivotal periods in my life,” the director told Pitchfork . “So working with them on this video for their new band was a dream.”

Filmed in St Mark’s Place and The International Bar, it features artists, musicians, activists, skaters and “icons” from New York “who are dear to the band”.

The Hard Quartet Tour Dates:

10 – The Belasco, Los Angeles 17 – Webster Hall, New York 22 – Electric Ballroom, London

Malkmus has said the band are “all jazzed” about the upcoming album, while Sweeney praised White’s drumming on the new material.

“The way Jim plays really affected the way I hear things,” he said in a press release. “He has this way of making everything sound good. All of a sudden, you really pay attention to everything else that’s going on because of what Jim is doing.”

The new band comes four years after Malkmus shared his last solo album  ‘Traditional Techniques’ , which also starred now-bandmate Sweeney. In the time since, his focus has been on various activities with Pavement.

Umphrey’s McGee Announce Morockshow, a Spring 2025 Getaway to Marrakech, Morocco

Umphrey’s McGee Announce Morockshow, a Spring 2025 Getaway to Marrakech, Morocco

In the spring of 2025, Umphrey’s McGee will take its singular, genre-distorting brand of jam out to new horizons with Morockshow, a new destination event from the scene-staple sextet. Following beloved excursions abroad for international touring and Röckjavik, the band’s 2022 three-night run at Eldborg Concert Hall in Reykjavik, Iceland, UM raises the bar with its forthcoming event, which will bring the Chicago-based improv-rock unit and fans to Marrakech, Morocco on April 18, 19 and 20 of next year.

Morockshow is presented by Pilgrimage of Sound, the same organization behind Röckjavik, Greensky Bluegrass’ Camp Greensky Iceland and other Icelandic events for Pavement, The Disco Biscuits and Wilco. Furthering its partnership with Umphrey’s, the group will welcome fans to North Africa’s Red City for three nights of music at Chez Ali, plus an array of activities and opportunities to soak up the scenery during the day before the band takes the stage again. UmVIP packages are also available, which include accommodations at a nearby hotel, shuttles to and from the venue, exclusive merch, an on-site reception party and an exclusive set from the band.

Umphrey’s McGee fans can lock down their tickets to the getaway now with the pre-sale lottery for 3-day passes, umVIP plans and travel packages. Pre-sale will conclude tomorrow, Aug. 21 at 12 p.m. CT with the launch of the general on-sale. For further details, visit morockshow.com . Read more on Umphrey’s McGee and its upcoming 2024 tour dates at umphreys.com/tour/ .

What Delaware concerts are in August 2024? Plenty to choose from

Portrait of Andre Lamar

While the summer concert season in Delaware is starting to fade away like the victims of a Thanos snap, there's still a lot of cool shows to marvel at this season.

Here's a preview of the top must-see concerts on tap in the First State in August.

Ollabelle, Arden

The storied folk collective Ollabelle is on track to headline a concert at the Arden Gild Hall as they're set to play a 20th anniversary show at the venue.

Ollabelle's first show at the Gild Hall was September 2004, and they played there twice since, per the Gild Hall's website. This year also marks Ollabelle's 20th anniversary of their self-titled debut album.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

The band started as a group of artists gathering on the Lower East Side of post-9/11 New York City. Now the band's members are seasoned stars, each making noise in their own right. That means Byron Isaacs now plays with the Lumineers. Glenn Patscha plays with Bonnie Raitt. Tony Leone grooves with Little Feat. Fiona McBain has been singing and recording with her duo The Nine Seas, while Amy Helm has a thriving solo career.

The local Honey Badgers duo will open this Arden concert.

Arden Gild Hall (2126 The Highway, Arden) at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2. Tickets are $33.99. Visit ardenconcerts.com .

Whitney Houston tribute, Selbyville

Singer Belinda Davids reminds the world of how dynamic the late R&B singer Whitney Houston was in this show that carries the New Jersey native's torch to the First State.

Freeman Arts Pavilion (31806 Lake View Drive, near Selbyville) at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3. Tickets are $49.54. Visit freemanarts.org or (302) 436-3015.

Soja, Selbyville

The popular reggae outfit Soja is marching downstate with its eight-piece band featuring Seaford's own Trevor Young as the lead guitarist. The Grammy-winning band Soja is responsible for big tunes like "Rest of My Life," "You and Me" and "Not Done Yet."

Patrons may bring a chair to the Soja concert.

Freeman Arts Pavilion (31806 Lakeview Drive, near Selbyville) at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4. Tickets start at $56.46. Visit freemanarts.org or call (302) 436-3015.

Chase Matthew, Dewey Beach

After country star Chase Matthew dropped his debut album, "Born for This" (2022), it's been off to the races. He's played to sold-out crowds who love his songs like "County Line," "Everything He Couldn't" and "Love You Again."

Singer-songwriter David J will open for Chase Matthew.

Bottle & Cork (1807 Highway One, Dewey Beach) at 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4. Tickets are $25 Visit bottleandcork.com or call (302) 227-7272.

Air Supply, Selbyville

Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock met on the first day of rehearsals for the production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" in Australia in 1975. Since then, the soft-rock duo better known as Air Supply has touched the globe with favorites like "Sweet Dreams," "Making Love Out of Nothing at All," "Lonely is the Night" and more. Be prepared to inhale a collection of greatest hits from Air Supply when they come to town.

Freeman Arts Pavilion (31806 Lakeview Drive, near Selbyville) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6. Tickets start at $79.50. Visit freemanarts.org or call (302) 436-3015.

The Glorious Sons, Dewey Beach

When Eminem headlined Firefly Music Festival in Dover in 2018, the less-famous Canadian rockers The Glorious Sons also played the festival that same year. But TGS has continued to pound the pavement and has upcoming shows this summer and fall as an opener for the Smashing Pumpkins.

TGS's catalog includes tunes like "Everything is Alright," "S.O.S. (Sawed Off Shotgun)" and "Heavy."

Bottle & Cork (1807 Highway One, Dewey Beach) at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6. Tickets are $25 Visit bottleandcork.com or call (302) 227-7272.

Grace Potter, Selbyville

During the pandemic in 2021, Grace Potter hit the road on a solo, cross-country trip that saw her crashing at motels and jotting down song ideas in these intimate places. Fast-forward to 2023 and the singer-songwriter has her latest album, "Mother Road," where she creates a musical gumbo of blues, country, rock 'n' roll and soul.

Freeman Arts Pavilion (31806 Lake View Drive, near Selbyville) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7. General admission is $56.46. Visit freemanarts.org or (302) 436-3015.

Alabama, Selbyville

There's a low-ticket warning to see country legends Alabama in SoDel. More than 50 years have passed since three cousins left Alabama to spend the summer performing in a Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, bar named The Bowery.

The country icons Alabama would go on to sell 73 million albums, per the band’s bio, with hit songs such as "Song of the South," "Dixieland Delight" and "Angels Among Us."

Freeman Arts Pavilion (31806 Lake View Drive, near Selbyville) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8. Tickets are $91.02 to $160.16. Visit freemanarts.org or (302) 436-3015.

John Gallagher Jr., Arden

Wilmington native and actor John Gallagher Jr. , whose first girlfriend was A-list actress Aubrey Plaza , is looking to make some noise in an outdoor Arden concert, while performing with a band. The singer-songwriter will play a special acoustic set in Arden with his dad, John Sr., to open the show. Get ready to hear tunes from Gallagher's newly released album, "Goodbye or Something."

The accomplished actor's résumé includes HBO's "The Newsroom," "Jonah Hex" and "Westworld."

Arden Gild Hall (2126 The Highway, Arden) at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11. Tickets are $25. Visit ardenconcerts.com .

Dark Star Orchestra, Selbyville

For over 25 years, Dark Star Orchestra has continued the Grateful Dead live concert experience, playing over 3,100 shows around the country and abroad. This includes a sold-out show at Colorado’s Red Rocks Park & Amphitheater. Old Crow Medicine Show, Selbyville

While Old Crow Medicine Show doesn't need to busk anymore like they did in 1998, don't think they're not working hard for their money to rock venues these days. Fans of the Americana string band, popular for tunes like "Tennessee Pusher" and "Sweet Amarillo," will get a chance to see them twice this year in Delaware. That's because Old Crow is coming downstate in August and they're set for a second show at The Grand in Wilmington on Sunday, Nov. 10.

Ukraine war latest: 'Mass disruption' to messaging apps in Russia; Moscow comes under huge drone attack

Moscow has come under one of the largest attacks by Ukrainian drones yet, with Russia saying it destroyed 45 Ukrainian drones overnight. It comes as Kyiv's forces continue to push into Russia's western Kursk region. Meanwhile, major messaging apps are disrupted in Russia.

  • Live reporting by Samuel Osborne

Russian Orthodox priests have brought an icon to the site of a massive fuel depot fire in southern Russia sparked by a Ukrainian drone attack in the hope it will help tame the blaze, the local diocese has said.

The icon of the Unburnt Bush is considered by Christians in Russia to be a talisman against fire.

We have been reporting on how the fire has been burning since Sunday despite efforts by firefighters to douse the flames.

Around 20 of 74 storage tanks were on fire, the RIA news agency reported on Tuesday, citing local administration boss Valery Gornich.

Volunteers who previously helped Ukrainian refugees are now providing shelter and essential items to Russians affected by Kyiv's invasion of western Russia.

We have more details on the mass disruption to the Telegram and WhatsApp messaging apps in Russia we reported earlier (see 12.57pm post).

Moscow's state communications monitoring service said the problems were caused by a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack.

The service said the attack had been repelled and the messaging networks were working normally again.

Local media said other sites such as Wikipedia, Skype and the social media platform Discord had also been affected.

"The disruption is related to a DDoS attack on Russian telecom operators," the service said, without elaborating on who might have been responsible.

Russia began to block access to Telegram in 2018, a move which had little effect on the availability of the app there.

WhatsApp's parent company Meta was branded an "extremist" organisation by Moscow in 2022 and its other services such as Facebook and Instagram are now banned in Russia - though they can still be accessed via virtual private networks (VPNs).

Russia has closed airports in its northwestern cities of Murmansk and Apatity and restricted the use of airspace over those cities, the TASS news agency has reported.

Such measures are usually taken in Russia because of potential or actual Ukrainian drone attacks.

Ukraine attacked Moscow earlier today in one of the largest attacks yet on the Russian capital since the start of the war in 2022 (see 09.51am post).

Russian authorities said they had destroyed all of the drones headed towards the capital.

Kyiv has said its forces are using US-made HIMARS rockets to destroy pontoon bridges and engineering equipment in Russia's western Kursk region.

Ukraine has destroyed or damaged at least three bridges over the Seym River since Kyiv launched its attack three weeks ago.

"Where do Russian pontoon bridges 'disappear' in the Kursk region? Operators... accurately destroy them," Ukraine's special operations forces said on Telegram.

It said HIMARS rocket systems were used - the first official statement from Kyiv that Western weapons had been used as part of the offensive.

We are now seeing "the battle of the pontoon bridges," says our  defence and security analyst Professor Michael Clarke .

He says Russian vehicles carrying the pontoon equipment "are pretty obvious from the air because they've got bridge pieces on them," and the Ukrainians are using drones to go after the individual vehicles.

"When they see a pontoon bridge beginning to emerge they try and attack it. The Russians have been trying to build lots of these and the Ukrainians have been trying to attack them."

Russians in the border region invaded by Ukraine have been told to avoid using dating apps to prevent Kyiv's forces from gathering intelligence.

Moscow's interior ministry told residents, military and police personnel in the Bryansk, Kursk and Belgorod regions to avoid "online dating services".

"The enemy actively uses such resources for information gathering," it said on Telegram.

Ukrainian forces are continuing to push into Russia's western Kursk region in an offensive that began two weeks ago.

Ukraine's parliament has voted to ratify the Rome Statute, allowing the country to join the International Criminal Court (ICC) - a key part of its drive to join the European Union.

The move would allow authorities "to more effectively punish" suspected Russian war criminals, according to Ukrainian politician Oleksiy Honcharenko.

The ICC has issued arrest warrants for several Russian officials, including Vladimir Putin and former defence minister Sergei Shoigu for their roles in alleged crimes against Ukrainian civilians - Russia has denied targeting civilians.

"Ukraine has already worked effectively with the ICC to ensure comprehensive accountability for all Russian atrocities committed in the course of Russian aggression," Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted.

"This work will now be even more effective."

Ukraine's drone attack on Moscow and surrounding areas is "something to be remarked on", our  defence and security analyst Professor Michael Clarke  says.

Kyiv is "launching drones in lots of places" and there is a fire at a refinery fire in Rostov targeted by Ukraine "which is still going on after four days", he says.

"The Ukrainians are trying to worry the Russians as much as they can across the whole border to make the most of what they're doing in Kursk," says Prof Clarke.

"From the Ukrainian point of view they had the effect in Moscow of closing the airports for a while. And that brings home to the Russian people that this is war and you can't insulate yourself from this.

"And that's the message that the Ukrainians are trying to send out. They know most of these drones won't get through but if one or two get through they score the point and they inconvenience ordinary Russians in Moscow who pretend this isn't really happening."

Asked how Russia is responding to Ukraine's invasion of its territory, Prof Clarke said Moscow's forces "are still at sixes and sevens over what is happening in the Kursk region in this incursion".

He explains: "They don't seem to have been able to sort out exactly who is in charge."

Prof Clarke says there are "three different forces" on the ground in Kursk, and adds this is "one of the reasons why they're not doing very well".

He says: "So it's apparent that 16 days after this incursion began the Russians are still struggling to create a coherent response...  it's partly because Putin operates a sort of medieval court in the Kremlin and when it's struck with a crisis like this people just vie with each other to be closer to the king."

Russia's state telecommunications monitoring service is reporting mass disruption to the Telegram and WhatsApp messaging apps.

The service did not say what could have caused the disruptions.

Monitoring service DownDetector has reported a spike in reports of issues with Telegram this afternoon.

Critic’s Notebook

At the Ruhrtriennale, Searching for the Sublime Among the Ruins

In the abandoned industrial sites that serve as the festival’s venues, our critic witnessed beauty struggling to be born: fitfully, clumsily and sometimes stunningly.

A large cast moves on a ramp on a darkened stage.

By A.J. Goldmann

Reviewing from Bochum, Duisburg and Essen, Germany.

“ I Want Absolute Beauty ,” the title of the opening production for this year’s Ruhrtriennale, sounds like a mission statement of sorts.

The event, one of Germany’s major arts festivals, lights up the former industrial sites that dot the Ruhr region, in the country’s northwest — though hulking power plants and abandoned steelworks aren’t where you necessarily expect to find beauty. Then again, this 22-year-old festival has always been about letting audiences encounter the sublime among the ruins. Everywhere I turned during the Ruhrtriennale’s opening weekend, I witnessed beauty struggling — fitfully, clumsily and sometimes stunningly — to be born.

This summer, the Ruhrtriennale welcomes a new artistic leader, the acclaimed Belgian theater director Ivo van Hove . His three-season tenure kicked off on Friday night with “I Want Absolute Beauty,” a staged cycle of songs by the English singer-songwriter P.J. Harvey that van Hove has created for the German actress Sandra Hüller , presented at the Jahrhunderthalle, a former power station in the city of Bochum.

Hüller, best-known for her Academy Award-nominated performance in “Anatomy of a Fall,” gives gutsy and full-throated renditions of 26 of Harvey’s songs accompanied by a four-person band. It’s a heroic performance over an intermission-less hour and a half. Van Hove doesn’t impose a narrative, in the style of jukebox musicals, but a journey of sorts can be followed through the titles (“Dorset” — “London” — “New York”) that appear on a screen where both live and prerecorded video is projected throughout the evening.

The stage area is covered in dirt, and dancers twirl, writhe and gyrate around Hüller. The choreography, by the collective (La)Horde , is earthy and elemental, sometimes joyous and liberating, but often menacing and with hints of sexual violence. Hüller is always front and center, her voice tough but with an edge of fragility. Sometimes she joins the dancers in their primeval thrashing. The results can be exhilarating but are just as often exasperating. Despite the high caliber of the performances, it’s easy to lose interest. Occasionally there’s an earsplitting crescendo or blinding flood light to jolt us back to attention.

It’s a production that hovers at the edge of several genres, never able to make up its mind whether it’s a concert, dance or theater. The Ruhrtriennale, with its unconventional locations, vast venues and even vaster resources (its annual budget is around $19 million), is well-suited to developing and presenting unconventional, multidisciplinary productions and artistic creations that do not easily fit within pre-established categories and classifications. In this case, however, the beauty that van Hove seeks, absolute or otherwise, proves elusive.

I witnessed a far more harmonious fusion of disparate art forms the next day at the Folkwang Museum, in the nearby city of Essen, during the premiere of “Y,” a new dance work by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.

De Keersmaeker has staged work in museum galleries before, but this time, she has also curated the works on the walls, which she has chosen from the Folkwang’s permanent collection. “Y” lasts for the better part of an afternoon, and visitors, who get time-slotted tickets, are welcome to stay however long they please.

As I entered, the dancers were grouped in front of Édouard Manet’s 1877 “Portrait of Faure as Hamlet,” imitating the epée-holding subject’s stance. They soon scattered over several galleries. In one featuring works by Manet and Yves Klein, the dancer Nina Godderis seemed to channel both Hamlet and Ophelia’s madness during a twitching and virtuosic performance that incorporated spoken fragments of the “To be or not to be” monologue and featured several fitful costume changes. Elsewhere, Nassim Baddag spun on his head, his legs spreading out in a V that mirrored the shape of the mountains in a copy of a painting by Caspar David Friedrich.

I had to tear myself away from “Y” after an hour to dash back to Bochum for the German premiere of Philip Venables and Ted Huffman’s “ The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions ,” based on an underground queer manifesto published by Larry Mitchell in 1977. This remarkable production, first seen at last year’s Manchester Festival, felt unexpectedly intimate in the vast Jahrhunderthalle.

For their third collaboration, Venables, a British composer, and Huffman, an American librettist and director, have created a joyous and affirmative musical theater work. Like its source material, the show lays out an alterative world history defined by the endless struggle between queer people and their allies on the one hand, and the guardians of the patriarchy, known simply as “The Men,” on the other. In celebrating the heterodox, the radical, the fringe and even the deviant, the show’s form matches its content, with a bold mixture of musical styles — baroque, folk, pop — and theatrical devices. As exuberant as it is slippery, its unconventional brand of beauty felt right at home at the Ruhrtriennale.

After hailing Venables and Huffman’s queer utopian warriors, I raced 20 miles to another former power station, on the edge of city of Duisburg, for “Legende,” a theatrical homage to the great Georgian filmmaker Sergei Parajanov . The show’s starting time had been brought forward an hour, and I nearly didn’t make it. The reason for the change was that the running time of Kirill Serebrennikov’s show, a co-production with the Thalia Theater in Hamburg, had swelled to over four hours during rehearsals. Told in 10 chapters (the “legends” of title) inspired by Parajanov’s life and work, this German-language production aims for a monumentality that it never quite achieves.

Serebrennikov, a Russian director who now lives in Germany, spent 20 months under house arrest in Moscow on embezzlement charges that were widely seen as trumped up. So it is unsurprising that he has been drawn to another artist tormented by political persecution: Parajanov was hounded by Soviet authorities for his formally daring work, and for his bisexuality, and served several prison sentences.

The production, with its colorful costumes and bric-a-brac props, is a visual stunner, and the performances, from the Thalia’s actors and Serebrennikov’s Russian collaborators alike, are fiercely committed.

Beauty, Serebrennikov says in an interview in the playbill , “requires passion, even cruelty, and often a sacrifice.” And though “Legende” is drawn out, and sometimes overblown, it is clearly animated by passion. In its best moments, the theatrical wattage it generates seems sufficient to reanimate the former power plant itself.

Arts and Culture Across Europe

With an opera at the Salzburg Festival and recordings on Deutsche Grammophon, the music of Mieczyslaw Weinberg may be taking root. Has his time finally come ?

An artist briefly stole a 17th-century coin from the British Museum , using sleight of hand to draw parallels to what he called the “trickery” of objects with contested provenance.

Whether you’re looking for frothy musicals or fiercely charged political writing, here are some of the shows vying for the attention  of visitors and residents seeking out London theater this summer.

A production of “Richard III” at the Shakespeare’s Globe theater faced criticism because a nondisabled actor plays the scheming king. But disputes like these miss the point , our critic writes.

The violent history of the Dutch colony that is now New York is not well known in the Netherlands. The curators of a new exhibition at the Amsterdam Museum  want to change that.
