The Princess Cruises Love Boat horn

If anyone has sailed with Princess Cruises in recent years, they may have been treated to the fantastic Love Boat horn that sets Princess Cruises apart from the other cruise lines.

I first heard the horn in 2017 when on board Regal Princess and it was a nice surprise to hear when it first sounded leaving Port Everglades.  Whilst we visited various ports in the Caribbean we were able to hear the tuneful horn and we even took part in a ‘horn battle’ in St Maarten with a Royal Caribbean ship – Princess won the battle of course!

The horn plays the first two lines of the Love Boat theme tune, using seven differently tuned horns.  The Love Boat was a 1970s US TV show set on a Princess Cruises ship.

The show was credited with the rise in cruise ship vacations and the increased popularity of Princess Cruises.  Since it started, the TV series has been translated into 29 different languages and viewed by millions in 93 countries around the world, placing the Princess Cruises brand in homes across the globe.

On ITV’s The Cruise: Return to the Mediterranean , the horn on Royal Princess had to be repaired after it starting hitting a wrong note.  Thankfully after a bit of a clean, the horns were restored and back to working order.

Disney Cruise Line is the only other cruise company that I’m aware plays a tune with its horns.  Disney Fantasy’s horns play ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’, which is quite magical to hear.  Check out Disney Cruise Line Blog’s post , which features all seven different Disney tunes.

Does the horns sound like the love boat theme

I was just on FB and someone had a video from the Royal princess back in January with a horn battle, and the princess ship had the love both theme.

Which I thought was really cool.

Do all the princess ships have the same horn?

Going on my first princess cruise this Saturday.

The only time we've heard the Love Boat theme was on the Royal. That might of changed, not sure.

We were on the Emerald on March 9 on a turnaround day in Fort Lauderdale with the Royal. It was very cool to hear the Love Boat theme and it definitely wasn't coming from us! :cool:

In order to play this on a ships horn , it needs more than just one horn. Otherwise they are playing on the loudspeakers.

So neat! It brings back such a fun time in life. The Love Boat (think of it we only had a few channels and were happy!) was the show to watch! I think it had so much to do with cruising becoming mainstream.

Really? We were on Feb 15 - Mar 2, and it wasn't playing it then. We LOVED hearing it on the Royal last October. We giggled every time we heard it!!!!!

How Fun Is This!

Will we be able to hear the horn from our balcony or do we have to be up on the upper decks? We are mid-ship on the Emerald deck.

We were on the Baja deck and were able to hear from the balcony. Did not hear it in the room, though.

I was on the Royal a few weeks ago! I had decided not to read anything going into it so I could make my own opinions so I had no idea the horn did this! What a surprise when we were leaving port! I loved that they played it every time we left port!! :)

Heck, I'd be happy if it played more from the same tune.

But I'm not sure what other tunes, besides the Love Boat theme, that it would play. There's not a large catalog of music like Disney has to choose from.

Just off Majestic Princess Third Leg of her Maiden Voyage to Shanghai. It was played after leaving 8 Ports of Call. On the UST, we found out that it's the responsibility of the Second Watch Officer to play it after leaving ports.

The Regal has it. It was funny for them to play it on the sailing when the Love Boat cast was with us up in the Sanctuary!

I have heard them play the LOVE BOAT theme on both Royal and Regal. It is a lot of fun. Everyone gets so excited.

(February 7, 2024) – Princess Cruises, known for its integral role as the ocean-going co-star in the iconic "The Love Boat" series, has officially unveiled a second themed cruise, reuniting cast members from the original show. Following the tremendous success of the inaugural Love Boat cruise in 2022, fans of the popular show can sail along with Doc, Gopher, Isaac and Vicki Stubing as they cruise roundtrip from New York to Canada & New England aboard Enchanted Princess, August 31-September 7, 2024.

Princess Cruises Celebrations Ambassador Jill Whelan (aka Vicki Stubing) will join fellow Love Boat cast members including Bernie Kopell (Doc), Fred Grandy (Gopher), and Ted Lange (Isaac). Ezra Freeman, the bartender from the recently aired The Real Love Boat on CBS reality dating series, will join the cast, along with other surprise guests to be announced.
