Red Stag Hunting Scotland

The red stag, also known as Cervus elaphus , is the monarch of the Scottish Highlands. Renowned for its impressive antlers, majestic stature, and elusive nature, this iconic species has captivated hunters for generations. With mature males often weighing over 400 pounds and sporting antlers reaching heights of up to 40 inches, encountering a red stag in its natural habitat is an awe-inspiring moment.

All red deer are completely wild and the majority are located on open moorland and mountainous terrain. The challenge of stalking over various types of terrain to achieve the final goal of having a stag within your sights lures many hunters to the highlands year after year.

Rutting Season: The Peak of Excitement

One of the most exhilarating times for red stag hunting in Scotland is during the rutting season. Taking place from September to October, this period is marked by fierce competition among stags vying for dominance and mating rights. The primal roars echoing through the glens, known as “ roars ,” serve as a haunting reminder of the intensity and primal nature of the hunt.

Antlered Game of the World

Sika Stag Hunting Scotland

These magnificent creatures are highly prized among hunters for their elusive nature and challenging behavior. Sika deer possess a unique set of physical and behavioral characteristics that make them a captivating species to pursue.

Paulo Peres – 15/11/2019

Hunting in three different estates in the eastern Scottish Highlands was an amazing experience. The scenery alone was worth the trip and the challenging hikes up and down the mountains. First grade guides, great red stags harvested, excellent lodging at the Dornoch Castle and the outfitters attention will see me back there next year.

My hunt was absolutely top notch.

The outfitter is a fantastic man and incredibly hard working and knowledgeable, there is no doubt he will do everything within his power to make peoples hunts successful and enjoyable. I plan to do it again with him next year for sure.

Our hunt was excellent.

We saw bucks every day along with all other sorts of wildlife. Mountain goats, bears, and foxes were common sights. Fishing and crabbing was special bonus. The food was excellent, the crew was amazing. Outdoors International did a great job of finding exactly what we were looking for.

Jesse Neveau

What an amazing experience!

The hunting lodge was out of this world!, Rooms, food and the scenery were all A+. Our guide was exceptional and had us on Shiras moose all five days. We saw over 30 total with at least 10 bulls. They had a plan for everything including taxidermy and game processing.

Red Stag Stalking

The best red deer hunting holidays scotland has to offer, about red deer.

Experience the best Red Deer stalking holidays Scotland has to offer with our country’s largest and iconic wild land animal.

Red Stags are mostly confined to highland areas of open heather hill as they are fenced out of forests because they are seen as a pest in lowland situations. Expectations vary according to the two distinct parts of our hunting season which is determined by ‘The Rut’ – the period of the year where the beasts are looking for a mate.

”Pre-rut’ is the most unpredictable time starting in mid September and running up to early October so a typical pre-rut hunt has an expectation of one stag over three days hunting.

‘The Rut’ starts from the first week of October and finishing on the 20th, so the Rut is short but well worth it.  During this season the deer are brilliantly active and the hills are alight with the deep roars of animals chanting across the landscape to attract their potential mate.  Because of this activity, it is at this time of year when we can maximise our chances and our expectations increase dramatically with an expectation of three to four stags over a three day hunt. Experiencing the rut in the Scottish highlands is the pinnacle of big game hunting.

To get the most out of your Red Deer stalking holiday we plan to give you three days on the hill, Monday-Wednesday and Thursday-Saturday.

Arrival day

You will arrive to Woodmill anytime from 3pm and we’ll promptly begin our introduction to cover firearms handling, target practice and kit check.

Hunting days 1, 2 and 3

To make the most of the day we will typically start at 7.30am and travel to the estate in our vehicles. Guests can choose to stay at Woodmill or choose their own accommodation. We stalk in a traditional way on foot which requires a degree of fitness with a normal day lasting 6 – 8 hours and we stop frequently to spy for or listen out for the sounds of roaring stags as we plan our approach in the hope of locating a mature specimen. If the day is successful the animals are brought back to our larder at Woodmill where they are chilled in readiness for processing as they enter our food supply business Woodmill Game .  For those who would like to, we invite guests to butcher if they so wish.

If you are staying in Woodmill House your evening will start with a 2 course meal by an open log fire in the comfort of our drawing room. For those staying in the self-catered Woodmill Arches, you will be able to relax in pure comfort and take the evening at your own pace.

Departure day

On the day of departure you will leave Woodmill at 10am.

Hunting Season

1st July – 20th October

Where we Shoot

We have two highland estates that we hunt on, these are called Straloch and Lick.

Our approach is a very simple one, we try to select mature stags of 6 – 7 years. These animals will vary in the size & shape from 6 – 14 points with age as the determining factor. Every year we observe several 12 point animals known as ‘Royals’ during the rut, preferring to leave them to breed for the good of the population.

At the end of every trip we offer a trophy prep service where heads are cleaned & bleached then dried before shipping. This is an optional service which is available on request.

Our stalking takes place on various estates most of which are within a 20 minute drive of Kingussie. All red deer are completely wild and are located on open moorland and mountainous terrain. The challenge of stalking over various types of terrain to achieve the final goal of having a stag within your sights lures many guests to us year after year.

A Typical Day

Upon arrival on the estate you will be met by your stalker, usually around 0900 hours. you will be asked to shoot at a target to ensure that you comfortable with your rifle and that the rifle is accurate, targets are positioned usually at a distance of 100 metres.

Upon commencement of the hunt you will be accompanied at all times by an experienced stalker and occasionally a ghille. Your stalker will know where to locate your deer depending on wind direction and prevailing conditions.

When the deer are located the herd will consist of between 10 and 100 red deer, at this point your stalker will select a stag that, in his opinion, is suitable to be culled. At this point you and your stalker begin your final approach, this will usually involve crawling on the ground in order to avoid detection by the stag. Once you have reached a suitable distance from the group the selected stag will be described to you. When the target is standing correctly a shot can be taken.

Stag Hunting in Scotland

Stag hunting is conducted in the traditional manner, normally on a 2:1 basis with our professional stalkers. They will carefully guide you through the terrain using their knowledge and experience in search of a suitable cull animal.

With the benefit of managing seven different hunting areas, and the unpredictability of the Highland weather, we always have an area that will suit adverse conditions, ensuring the best possibility of a stalk. Hunting times will vary depending on whether you are woodland or open hill stalking. To ensure clients have the best deer hunting opportunities, we do recommend a good level of fitness.

We do not advertise as a trophy-hunting outfit but do get some very good quality stags, nevertheless we try to cull old or poor quality stags for the benefit of herd management. We pride ourselves on the unrivalled experience clients will leave with and that we have done all to ensure they have had good opportunities.

Clients will usually arrive at Mingarry Park Guest House on Sunday where they will be warmly welcomed and briefed on the week's deer hunting. Monday morning will be straight to the rifle range where the firearms will be tested to ensure accuracy, then once the stalker is satisfied it's off to the hunting area. Departure is normally on Friday or Saturday allowing four to five days for hunting (if required).

Most clients will take two stags each during their stay although we are flexible depending on one's requirements. We can accommodate for six hunters taking twelve stags during the main rutting weeks in October. During the earlier weeks in August and September we can manage up to six stags. If necessary, travel arrangements can be organised to get you to and from the airport.

If necessary we can arrange for visitor firearms passes at a fee of £50 each for admininstration. However, to reduce cost and travel problems with firearms, we can offer the use of the stalkers' rifles under their supervision whilst here. Most of our European clients now take this option while deer huting in Scotland.

These complete packages are priced less than $6,000 today, as the US Dollar is trading very strong against the British Pound.  Another aspect that makes this opportunity so unique is I also have the exclusive right to incredible estate stags on the best estates in Scotland and England, to which our hunters can upgrade to, which are unquestionably the best private herds of red stag in all of Scotland.  The top Scottish estate stags have come from our main herd for over 46 years! A comparable head elsewhere could cost several times as much as what we charge.

While on this trip, roe deer, fallow deer, and Soay rams may also be taken at a cost of $175.00 an outing, plus $950.00 for a roe buck or a ram and $1,450.00 for a fallow buck.  Trophy fees for those same animals can also cost several times that in other parts of Europe.

Our package begins with the guest’s departure on day one, arrival in Scotland on day two, transfers to the hunting area on day three, hunting and other activities on days four, five, and six, and their return flight home on day seven. Hunters may extend their stay in Europe at their own expense if they wish. Under my US Fish and Wildlife import/export license, I will ship, import, and clear my clients’ trophies at cost in less than 60 days after the conclusion of our hunt.

Legend of the Scottish White Stag

In 1128, a rebellious King David was warned by his priest not to go hunting on the Feast Day of the Holy Rood (Holy Cross). Stubbornly, he set off on the hunt and came across a large white stag, which he chased.  Thrown from his horse, the stag charged him.  David cried out to God to save him, at at that precise instant, a cross appeared between the deer’s antlers, and the animal vanished.  King David built Holy Rood Church on the spot where his live was spared. From then on, the white stag became a symbol of purity, redemption and good fortune in Scotland. This rare genetic mutation, called leucism, occurs only once in then thousand red deer.

In which countries can you hunt this species?

red stag hunting trip scotland prices

Which are the best months to hunt this species?

Frequently asked questions, what is the difference between the scottish red deer and the scottish red stag.

The terms "red deer" and "red stag" are often used interchangeably. However, technically, the "stag" refers specifically to the male of the red deer species, while "red deer" is a broader term that includes both males (stags) and females (hinds).

When is the rutting season for the Scottish Red Stag?

The rutting season for red stags in Scotland typically occurs in September and October. During this time, stags can be heard bellowing and clashing antlers in a display of dominance.

What is the average size of a mature Scottish Red Stag's antlers?

A mature stag can have antlers with 12 or more points, commonly referred to as a "royal." However, the number of points can vary, with some impressive stags having even more.

Is there a bag limit for Scottish Red Stag?

There is no statutory bag limit, but individual estates may have their own culling targets and guidelines to ensure sustainable hunting.

How can I identify a mature stag that's suitable for hunting?

Mature stags typically have thicker necks, larger bodies, and more massive, more branched antlers than younger males. An experienced guide can help hunters make the right choice.

What is the significance of the Red Stag in Scottish culture?

The Red Stag holds a legendary status in Scottish lore and is a symbol of the wild and rugged Highlands. It also plays a central role in traditional Highland stalking culture.

Do I need any special permits to hunt Scottish Red Stag?

Yes, you will need a firearms certificate to use a rifle in Scotland. Non-residents will require a "Visitor's Permit," which can be arranged by the estate where you'll be hunting or through a sporting agency.

Is it possible to bow hunt for Red Stag in Scotland?

No, bow hunting is illegal in the UK. Traditional stalking with a rifle is the accepted and legal method.

How long does a typical Red Stag hunt last?

A typical day's stalking starts in the morning and can last until dusk, but the duration might vary depending on the estate's practices and the hunter's preferences.

How expensive is stalking red stags?

red stag hunting trip scotland prices

August 30, 2019

Stalking a majestic red stag in the Scottish Highlands and islands is the stuff of sporting dreams.

rifles for deer stalking

How much does it cost to shoot a stag?

One of the country’s most majestic animals, the red deer is Scotland’s largest native land mammal and one of its most sought-after sporting trophies. But how much does it cost to shoot a stag?

https://www.instagram.com/p/BwtYTL8BpvP/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

John Sugden who heads up Campbells of Beauly advises: ” It depends where you go. For £700 you’ll get a beautiful day with ponies, in other words old school. The best way of getting a deal is to contact a sporting lets agency, like Galbraiths. They work with so many estates there will be a wide choice of options. It’s a common misconception to think that an agency overcharges but in fact that’s not the case.”

Different costs

Opt for a week in a Scottish baronial hunting lodge and it will naturally set you back more than a couple of nights in a concrete cottage. Most estates will have package deals for stalking trips, which are worth enquiring about. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter where you lay your head at night, as you’re likely to be exhausted, but it helps to have a roaring fire, hot bath and comfortable space to relive the day’s exertions over a dram.

What you’re likely to pay

  • Expect to pay between £400-£750 (plus VAT ) on average per stag.
  • Early season stags (July to August) can be cheaper, and those late summer beasts on the high tops represent a different sporting challenge to autumn animals during the rut.
  • Some estates will also charge additional trophy fees for beasts with particularly impressive antlers.
  • Blank days (when no suitable shot is presented) are also chargeable for a smaller fee in some cases, so it’s always worth checking.
  • Don’t forget tips for the stalker himself, any ghillies, pony boys/girls, cooks and housekeepers, depending on where you are staying. As always, amounts are discretionary and you should give what you think reflects the efforts made on your behalf, which can be considerable.
  • |If you want the stalker to boil up the head so that you can take your antlers with you, there will be another additional charge, and skinning/caping for grander taxidermy mounts will be more again

Stalking: Highland stags on a budget

Head north for some memorable stalking

Where should you go stalking?

It depends on your personal preference, budget , and level of experience. Do you want to test yourself on steep, rugged hillsides or would you prefer flatter, more sheltered terrain? Do you dream of a regal rack to mount above the fireplace, or would you be happier to take a less glamorous cull beast for the good of the herd?

Would you like to go as part of a large group and stay in a fully catered hunting lodge or a cosy self-catered cottage? Are you an experienced stalker or would you welcome more of a guiding hand?

We investigated some options around Scotland.

Fishing in Newfoundland – 2024

We currently have an excellent opportunity to join our Fishing Director (Ali Hutchens) on a guided and fully inclusive fishing excursion to Newfoundland. Our chosen venue had not been visited by anyone from the UK until our adventure there in 2022. It is a wild and untouched venue fishing for Atlantic Salmon and Sea run Brook Trout in one of the most prolific areas on the planet. This truly is the fishing adventure you have been looking for!

These Newfoundland Atlantic Salmon are targeted with single hand & switch rods giving you the chance to fish for them on the surface. This river is 1.5 miles in length and fish are held on their journey by these impressive falls. This entire area is yours to fish exclusively. The river & estuary offer the chance to fish for both Atlantic Salmon & sea run Brook Trout.

The chosen venue is during the prime weeks of the season so don’t miss out on this “off grid” chance to fish in some of the worlds most pristine waters for Atlantic Salmon.

This remote location offers peace and tranquillity to target Atlantic Salmon in a wild setting where fish have rarely seen a fly cast over them before. This truly is a rare opportunity and one not to be missed and it’s more cost effective than a trip to Iceland! Prices start from £2950.00 (incl. VAT) per person.

The world’s largest population of humpback whales return each year to Newfoundland to feed on capelin, krill, and squid along the coast and we will be there when it is peak season for whale watching, from mid July to mid August.

The area has a rich fishing history. Should you wish to take a break from freshwater fishing, there will be an opportunity to go sea fishing. The region is one of the most productive fishing grounds on our planet, creating perfect conditions for ground fish like cod.

If you have any other enquiries regarding fishing in the UK or other areas around the world, please do not hesitate to contact us. We have many contacts and experience in fishing a variety of venues for many species and look forward to hearing from you.
