What happens on the day?

On arrival at Shakespeare Distillery, you’ll meet your guide and the rest of the group.

The two of you will learn all about gin’s history and the company’s own story as you explore the distillery, before enjoying a guided tasting of three spirits and a Gin & Tonic or Rum & Mixer of your choice.

Participant guidelines

• Minimum age: 18
• Drivers are offered a gin or rum miniature to take away in lieu of the Gin & Tonice or Rum & Mixer of your choice
• The experience content, equipment used and restrictions may vary

The your takes place Wednesday to Sunday. Exclusions may apply.

We recommend you book at least four weeks in advance to ensure that dates are available. All bookings are subject to availability.

The partners contracted with us hold public liability insurance. We also hold contingency liability cover. You will not be liable for accidental damage to equipment, except where damage has been caused as a result of recklessness or wilful negligence.

We had a great time on our gin tasting experience, unfortunately the location changed due to power cuts which were out of their control. We had an extra complimentary gin by way of compensation which was nice! Our host was very friendly and knowledgeable, we got to sample different gins and rum also! We were able to watch a video showing the distillery and how the process works. All in all a very enjoyable experience!

Shakespeare Distillery is a small distillery just outside Stratford-upon-Avon. The distillery operates highly recommended distillery tours that include tastings as well as a gin-making experience where you can create your own unique gin.

What to see at the Shakespeare Distillery

There are two main ways to visit the Shakespeare Distillery: you can take a tour of the distillery or attend one of the gin-making experiences at the Shakespeare Distillery Gin School. In both instances, you get to taste several different gins and enjoy a gin and tonic (or three).

Shakespeare Distillery tour

The Shakespeare Distillery tour is an interesting introduction to the distilling process. It is an excellent experience that includes a talk about the history of gin as well as an explanation of the gin-making process.

The tour ends with a tutored tasting where you are able to try at least three different gins followed by a full-size gin and tonic.

Shakespeare Distillery Gin School

The distillery also operates a three-hour gin-making experience where you get the opportunity to use a miniature copper still to create your own unique gin from a blend of botanicals.

During your gin school course, you get to take a tour of the distillery, you have a guided tasting of three spirits and you get to enjoy three gin and tonics. You also get to take home 700ml of your own unique gin, which comes in one 500ml bottle and one 200ml bottle. You also get a voucher for 10% off purchases from the distillery shop.

Visiting the Shakespeare Distillery

The distillery is located in the countryside around 5km (3 miles) from the centre of Stratford-upon-Avon. It is possible to walk here from the town centre in around an hour, although you can take a bus 15 or 229 to the edge of town and walk the remaining 25 minutes. It is only a 10-minute drive but you shouldn’t be doing that if you want to taste any of the gin.

You must be aged 18 or over in order to enjoy any tastings. Soft drinks are provided for children and the designated driver, who also gets a miniature bottle of gin to take home.

There is a small shop selling gin produced on the premises and anyone taking the tour gets a voucher for 10% off from the distillery shop.

The tour runs for around 1¼ hours and the gin-making experience takes three hours, although you also need to allow time to get to and from the distillery.

Orkney gin distillery gets permission for tasting room as £820k expansion ramps up

Copinsay Tasting Room is just one piece of Deerness Distillery's expansion - which will see them branch out into whisky production

Orkney’s Deerness Distillery has been given permission to build a new tasting room and function building – as a major expansion takes shape.

The business, best known for its gin, is moving forward with an £820,000 expansion.

One of the key parts of the plan is the “Copinsay Tasting Room”, named after the small island within view of the distillery.

How will new building look?

It will feature a tour room and bar area, according to the planning documents now rubber-stamped by the council.

The room will hold groups of up to 50 people. While the initial plan is to use it for corporate functions, other events may be held there too.

And the business owners are hoping to have it in use by next spring, now it has been approved.

And what’s next as Deerness Distillery expands?

However, other elements of the expansion – which include a larger shop, cafe, outdoor area and car park – are just being finished up.

It’s hoped they’ll be ready to welcome the public on September 24.

While the business has made its name producing a range of gins, it is also branching into whisky – with production to start in November.

As such, the business has been constructing a new whisky stillhouse and cask storage area.

‘We’ve got a good reputation going’

Last spring they launched an “investment opportunity” with the sale of 200 casks of the distillery’s inaugural release single malt priced at £4,750 each.

Business owner and commercial director Gavin May told us about the wider plans.

My May said: “We’ve always been keen to do that. We have a lot of confidence in our products, which are all national and international multi-award winning.

“So we’ve got a very good reputation going.

“The whisky will be a long-term investment for our family and hopefully for generations to come.”

All this will be an area around 20 to 30-minute drive to the east of Kirkwall, in the peninsula of Deerness.

Mr May said most of the work has been “carried out by trades within the parish of Deerness.”
