Trip Movie Review: Solid comedy anchors this convoluted journey

When characters in movies hear a folklore about a dense forest with 'secrets', we know there's adventure awaiting them...mostly a cliched one. When they take the proverbial wrong turn, we so want to reach into the screens and steer them on to the right path. We want to yell at them for not listening to their guts and falling prey to whatever it is that is tormenting that forest. Since the days of yore, a slasher film invariably begins and ends in the same way. A group of friends find themselves in known, yet unheeded danger. They start dropping dead one by one. The ones remaining just about manage to escape, and eventually… this tale, if any good, gives birth to a money-spinning franchise.

Although slasher films are dime a dozen in the West, the genre isn't well-explored in Tamil cinema. Trip is the latest addition to this burgeoning list. It is heavily inspired by famous slasher flicks like Tucker and Dale Vs Evil , but director Dennis Manjunath disarms any criticism on this count by beginning the film with the famous Quentin Tarantino quote — “I steal from every movie ever made” — and following it up with a tongue-in-cheek "I agree to this."

Azhagan (Yogi Babu) and Amuthan (Karunakaran) are in the forests to do what one Mr Gopal did in Chandramukhi — to work on a solitary house in a deserted place. However, a group of friends led by Lidi (Sunainaa) and Vikram (Praveen Kumar) wrongly assume that Azhagan and Amuthan are cold-blooded, chainsaw-wielding killers. Now, this film could have been a gory comedy-of-errors. But…

Just like the age-old trope of the black guy in the group being the first victim in a slasher flick, Trip has a Muslim guy taking the first hit. Coincidence? I hope so. There are also multiple threads running among the members of the group. There's a blossoming romance; a married couple that keep on bickering; the brooding hero; and a couple of other characters to make up the numbers. As the film progresses, and the murders get bloodier, the narrative forces us to empathise with these deaths. Now, this film could have been a relationship drama in the guise of a bloody slasher flick. But…

There is a sci-fi narrative as an undercurrent to the entire film as well. This is the only original concept in Trip , and full marks to the filmmaker for sketching a believable reason for bringing cannabilism into the narrative. Now, this film could have been a smart zombie film of sorts with a comprehensive dose of science fiction. But…

Trip falls prey to the LCD (Lowest Common Demand) of Tamil cinema and wants to be everything. It wants to be a comedy. It wants to be a relationship drama. It wants to be a sci-fi thriller. It wants to be a friendship film. It wants to be all this and much more, and in the process loses out on the most basic requirement of all — consistency. The frequent tonal shifts are jarring. In one scene, some characters peddle funny one-liners just after witnessing the gruesome death of their friend. Reducing the plight of these victims to an afterthought is a strange choice. It wouldn’t have mattered if the entire film was treated as a dark comedy. But here, there's an unsettling oscillation between the serious portions and the comedy. The group of friends too, barring Kalloori Vinoth, are given very little to do other than say the most perfunctory lines with a straight face. There is no real emotional connect with any of the other characters.

This isn’t novel territory for Yogi Babu and Karunakaran, who are a hoot in this film. As long as Trip trains its spotlight on these two bumbling friends, it is a fairly entertaining ride. Even Sunainaa is much more comfortable goofing around with this duo than when running away from cannibals. But when the film shifts to serious territory, with deaths in abundance, it leaves us confused. Are we supposed to laugh at one of Yogi Babu-Karunakaran's free-wheeling wisecracks or shed a tear or two for those dead friends?

It isn’t exactly a case of being caught between a rock and a hard place. But when caught between laugh-out-loud comedy and blood-thirsty cannibals, it is safer to choose comedy...always.

அந்தமானுக்கு அருகே இருக்கும் தீவுகளில் மனித மாமிசத்தைத் தின்ற ஆதிவாசிகள் கூட்டத்தைப் பற்றிய அறிமுகத்துடன் படம் தொடங்குகிறது.

நிகழ்காலத்தில் சுனைனா, ஜெனிஃபர், விஜே சித்து உள்ளிட்ட நண்பர்கள் கூட்டம் கொடைக்கானலுக்கு சுற்றுலா செல்கின்றனர். அங்கு காட்டில் கருணாகரன், யோகிபாபு இருவரையும் பார்த்து கொலைகாரர்கள் என்று பயந்து ஓடுகின்றனர்.

இன்னொரு பக்கம் நண்பர்கள் கூட்டத்தில் ஒவ்வொருவராக இறந்து போக, சுனைனா யோகிபாபு, கருணாகரன் இணையிடம் எதேச்சையாக சிக்குகிறார். இதன் பிறகு நடக்கும் சம்பவங்களே ட்ரிப்.

இயக்குநர் டென்னிஸ் மஞ்சுநாத் தன் பெயருக்கு ஏற்றாற் போல பல ஆங்கிலப் படங்களைத் தழுவி தமிழில் ஒரு படத்தைக் கொடுக்க முயன்றுள்ளார். இது நகைச்சுவை திகில் படமா, அல்லது மனித மாமிசம் சாப்பிடுபவர்களின் படமா, த்ரில்லர் படமா எனக் கடைசி காட்சி வரை குழப்பம் நீள்கிறது.

யோகிபாபு, கருணாகரன் என இருவர் இருந்தும் படத்தில் நகைச்சுவை வறட்சி தொண்டையை அடைக்கிறது. நடிகர்களைப் பொருத்தவரை சுனைனா, ஜெனிஃபர், சித்து, கருணாகாரன், யோகிபாபு, பிரவீன்குமார், கல்லூரி வினோத் என அனைவருமே அவர்களால் முடிந்த அளவுக்கு அக்கறையாகவே நடித்துள்ளனர். மொட்டை ராஜேந்திரனுக்கு இந்தப் படத்திலும் ஒரு கதாபாத்திரம், வாய்ப்பு, அவ்வளவே.

அடர்ந்த காடு, காட்டுக்கு நடுவில் வீடு, காட்டில் நடக்கு சம்பவங்கள் என உதயசங்கரின் ஒளிப்பதிவும், சித்துகுமாரின் பின்னணி இசையும் படத்தை ஓரளவு காப்பாற்றுகிறது.

ஆனால் சிறுபிள்ளைத்தனமான கதை, திரைக்கதை, காட்சியமைப்புகள் படத்தை வெகுவாக பாதிக்கின்றன. பிரச்சினை என்று வந்தால் உடனடியாக போலீஸை அணுகலாமே, அது ஏன் நடக்கவில்லை என்பதற்கு கடைசி வரை விளக்கம் இல்லை.

சுனைனாவின் விளக்கத்தின் பின்பும் ஏன் நண்பர்களால் புரிந்து கொள்ள முடியவில்லை, தனியாக இருக்கக் கூடாது என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு தனியாகவே பிரிந்து செல்வது ஏன், இவர்களை தாக்க வருபவர்கள் ஜாம்பிக்களா, அல்லது மனித மாமிசம் தின்பவர்களா என்பது புரியவில்லை,

அடித்துப் போட்டாலே அவர்கள் இறந்துவிடுவார்கள் என்றால் நண்பர்கள் எல்லோரும் சேர்ந்து அவர்களை தாக்கிவிட்டே தப்பித்திருக்காலாமே என படம் நெடுக பல கேள்விகள் நமக்கு மன உளைச்சலைத் தருகின்றன.

படத்தின் ஆரம்பத்தில், 'நான் பார்த்த அத்தனை திரைப்படங்களிலிருந்து திருடுவேன்' என்கிற டேரண்டினோவின் கொள்கையோடு ஆரம்பிக்கிறார்கள். ஆனால் அது மட்டுமே படம் எடுக்கப் போதாது என்பதை யாராவது சொல்லிப் புரிய வைத்தால் நலம். நமக்கும் சரி, அவர்களுக்கும் சரி.

Trip – Review

‘ Trip ’ is a Tamil, comedy crime adventure movie, directed by debutant Dennis Manjunath, starring Yogi Babu, Sunaina and Karunakaran. Also there is an ensemble cast of Praveen Kumar, Jenifer, VJ Siddhu, VJ Rakesh, Kalloori Vinoth, Rajesh Siva, Adhulya Chandra and many others, including Motta Rajendran. The movie was produced by AViswanath and Praveen Kumar, Music by Siddu Kumar; camera handled by Udhayashankar and was released on 5 th February 2021.

The movie starts with the introduction of the tribal turned cannibals, living near the Andaman Islands. Coming to the present, a group of friends including Sunaina, Jenifer and Praveen Kumar are going on a trip to Kodaikanal. There in a jungle, they come across two innocents, whom they mistake for murderers. The innocents are Yogi Babu, a carpenter and Karunakaran, a painter, who come there for repairing a house.  And members of the friends group die one by one mysteriously and they all come together and the story follows.

The first half seems to be influenced by the horror comedy ‘Tucker and Dale vs Evil’ and the second half turns to be a horror thriller, influenced by ‘Wrong Turn’. Despite the presence of Yogi Babu and Karunakaran, there is no comedy worth. It is funny to have jokes on physical looks of people, in a movie which advices not to judge people with their looks. There is no humor in the comedy and it is no good for a successful actor like Yogi Babu.

There are many logical miss outs like why they didn’t sort for police assistance, moving individually after deciding to move in groups and so on. The scenes are predictable and the leading to the climax is long drawn.

In the friends group, only Sunaina and Jenifer had performed well and Sunaina has less scope comparing to her earlier movies. Praveen Kumar has done satisfactorily his character in the unbelievable plot and the rest of the group performance is bland. Motta Rajendran’s role is also limited.

Udhayashankar’s pleasant photography of the forest sceneries and the attractive visuals make the movie liable. And the music of Siddu Kumar is perfect and adds effect to the scenes. The only single of the movie is peppy. The cinematography and the music elevate the otherwise normal movie to a higher level. The editing of Deepak S Dwaraknath could have been better in the second half.

Overall, the movie lacks engagement and the ‘Trip’ is without definite destination.

The movie Trip gets underway as a group of friends decide to take a jolly trip into a dense forest region for fun! Just as they enter the forest, they come across two people - Azhagan (Yogi Babu) and Amuthan (Karunakaran) and mistake them to be psycho killers. The gang of friends once again come across Azhagan and Amuthan in mysterious circumstances in the middle of the night and when one of the friends - Lidi (Sunaina) gets taken away by the suspicious duo, the friends confirm Amuthan and Azhagan to be killers, trying to take them all down, one-by-one! However, Azhagan is a carpenter and Amuthan is a painter, who have come to the forest to renovate the house of a former Forest Officer and are totally innocent.

As the series of misunderstandings continue, the gang of friends are actually getting killed, one by one! After spending some time with Amuthan and Azhagan, Lidi finally understands them to be innocent but is shocked when her friends Vikram (Praveen Kumar) and Jeni (Nancy Jennifer) finally confront her in the duo's absence and try to convince her that the two are killers and that they were the ones who killed 2 of their friends. Amidst all this confusion, Amuthan and Azhagan return with an unconscious girl they came across, thinking her to be Lidi's friend. However, the girl - Samrin (Athulya Chandra), is not Lidi's friend but when she regains consciousness, warns all the folks that they are going to die! Who is Samrin? Who is killing the gang of friends? Why does Samrin warn that everybody is going to die? Are Amuthan and Azhagan actually killers or innocent? Watch Trip for the answers! The very setting of the movie begins like all Hollywood thrillers having college students taking off into a mysterious forest, only to be killed one-by-one, by some psycho killer. Well, this Trip also begins that way but very soon moves differently and with fully loaded comedy, gives the viewers a lighter vein, despite some serious scenes. The on-screen visuals and the BGM keep the viewers in a serious and tense mindset but the banter between Yogi Babu and Karunakaran, keeps things rolling on a funny note! The repartees between the two stars is enjoyable to the most extent! Sunaina has gotten very good screen presence and a lot of scope to showcase different emotions.

Among the friends, Praveen Kumar as Vikram, Nancy Jennifer as Jeni and Kalloori Vinoth as James, have a lot of scope. The rest of the gang - VJ Siddhu (as David), VJ Rakesh (as Siva), Lakshmi Priya (as Meera) amd Rajesh (as Rizwan), also make their presence felt! Mottai Rajendiran makes a brief appearance as Anjaa Puli. The first half of the movie rolls by at a decent pace and the intermission is upon us, in no time. However, the big unravel after the intermission seems to be a big letdown and considering that this is what the whole of the first half built up to, comes as a dampener. A lot of technical terms are involved and this sets the premise for the rest of the movie. The entire second half seems to be very hurriedly made as the writing and making seem rushed. The director seems to be a bit confused between cannibals and zombies or has there been a mutation that has combined the two. The cliched and long-drawn-out second half meanders along with some highly predictable scenes and an effort at providing some extra screen space and importance to Sunaina and Vikram.

Some freshness in the writing and moving away from predictability could have helped infuse some more life into the second half. The unperturbed reactions given by Yogi Babu in some scenes where there's utter death and gore around him, leave us confused. Some abruptly left scenes, like where did Anjaa Puli go, seem to make one think that there are some scenes which got lost in translation or editing! After a solid first half, the second half pulls the movie down. Thankfully, there is just one song in the movie, which is peppy and gets over at the very beginning of the movie. The setting of the forest provides for some lush visuals which make for pleasant viewing! Udhayashankar G's cinematography is good and adds to the viewing experience. Siddhu Kumar's music elevates the visuals and keeps the mood tense, building anticipation for the viewers. Deepak S Dwaraknath's editing could have added more to the movie in the second half, had there been a bit more trimming. AP Mohammed's make-up is a big plus for Trip.

Director Dennis Manjunath looks to have been influenced by a number of Hollywood thrillers but seems to have tried to incorporate one too many themes into Trip and is let down by some unremarkable scenes. Produced by A Viswanathan and E Praveen Kumar for Sai Film Studios, Trip makes for a decent viewing if you could go inside the theatre with zero expectations. 

Verdict: An average thriller with a decent first half and a not-so second half!

Palak and her girl gang went off to a cosy retreat to Goa and enjoyed the monsoons by the beach.

Palak Tiwari, who made her Bollywood debut last year, has been working on other projects since then. Recently, the actress took some time off from her professional commitments and went on a vacation with her girl gang. Palak and her friends went off to a cosy retreat to Goa and enjoyed the monsoon by the beach. She shared a photo dump from her ‘Girls Trip’ and it will surely make you want to pack your bags and head for a weekend getaway with your gang.

In one of the photos, she looked lovely in a black dress as she posed near the indoor pool. The following picture shows her in an off-the-shoulder dress, with the cool breeze touching her hair. In another snap, Palak was seen reclining on a couch inside a brightly lit house with tall glass windows. She also shared a candid still with her friends and undoubtedly, had a great time. Other snaps showed her relaxed on the swing or simply enjoying nature. Her followers were mesmerised with her pictures and shared how “beautiful” she looked in the snaps.

Palak, who is the daughter of actress Shweta Tiwari, stepped into Bollywood in 2023 with the film Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan starring Salman Khan. The film was an action-comedy and was a remake of the 2014 Tamil film Veeram. The cast also included Pooja Hegde, Venkatesh, Bhumika Chawla, Jagapathi Babu, Vijender Singh, Raghav Juyal, Jassie Gill, Siddharth Nigam, Shehnaaz Gill, Palak Tiwari, Vinali Bhatnagar and Satish Kaushik.

Speaking about her daughter aspiring to have a career in Bollywood, Palak’s mother, Shweta told India Today, “I envision her going up on the stage and receiving an award. I want to be seated there and I know I will be teary eyed when I see her win the award. This would indeed be the most gratifying feeling for me.” Shweta stated how she wants Palak to get the Best Actress award someday.

Palak Tiwari will next be seen in the sci-fi horror-comedy, The Virgin Tree. The film is directed by Sidhaant Sachdev. Sanjay Dutt, Sunny Singh, Mouni Roy, Aasif Khan and Beyounic are part of the cast.
