How to Find the Best Cruise Deals, According to Travel Experts

Snagging a great cruise deal is easier than you think — so as long as you follow these expert tips.

It’s no secret that cruising has become increasingly popular in recent years. According to data from the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), nearly 36 million passengers  (35.7 million, to be exact) will set sail in 2024, up 4.2 million from 2023. And, despite the industry’s increasing popularity, finding the best cruise deals may not be as difficult as you think — that is, as long as you know when to book (and what to look for).

What’s more, wave season, which takes place from January to March, is when dozens of cruise lines release their best, most value-packed offers, which means it’s arguably the best time to book your sailing. During these months, cruisers can choose from hundreds of different promotions, which, while exciting, can be overwhelming. However, according to Rob Clabbers, T+L A-list travel advisor and founder of Q Cruise + Travel , a Virtuoso agency in Chicago, “the lowest fare is only a deal if it is the right cruise for you.” In other words, he explains that if you “pick the wrong line or itinerary, that deal just turns into a waste of vacation time and money.”

With all this in mind, we tapped Clabbers, along with a few other T+L A-list travel advisors, to share their expert insight on how to find the best cruise deals.

Meet the Expert

Rob Clabbers is a Travel + Leisure A-list travel advisor who specializes in cruises. He also founded Q Cruise + Travel, a Chicago-based travel agency.

Mary Curry is a  T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist.

Ashton Palmer is also a T+L A-list travel advisor who specializes in expedition sailings.

Take advantage of wave season.

As previously mentioned, wave season runs from January through March. During this months-long stretch, sometimes referred to as the Black Friday of cruise deals, many cruise lines — from budget lines to small-ship luxury ones and beyond — offer some of the most competitive deals of the year. It’s well worth booking your cruise during these months.

Use a travel advisor.

Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or veteran sailor, the slew of deals, promotions, and special offers can seem daunting: How do you know which ones are worth booking? Which offers the most value? Clabbers explains, “All these options and special offers can be confusing, and a qualified travel advisor who knows their way around cruises may help you find the best deal.” Oftentimes, these folks can “offer extra benefits that are not available when booking directly with a cruise line.” Ultimately, says Clabbers, the best travel advisors are those who can “help customize your trip with hotels, tours, and other services that may be a better value or fit for your style of travel.”

Consider shoulder or low season travel.

Per Clabbers, many cruise lines offer lower fares before or after the peak seasons. “While the weather may not be at its peak, neither are the crowds. If your main interest is visiting cultural attractions and museums or exploring cities, rather than baking on a beach, fewer fellow travelers make for a much more enjoyable experience. Bonus: airfares may be lower, too.” A few examples include an Alaska sailing in May or September (as opposed to peak season, July and August) and a European river cruise in March or October/November (instead of May or September, which, per Clabbers, is considered high season).

Mary Curry, another T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist, echoes these sentiments. “I can't tell you how many travelers are hoping for a 'waived single supplement' or 'two for one' offer and then restrict themselves to only the peak dates for that region.” With that in mind, she says,  “It's so much more likely that these specials will be offered for dates where demand is not as high since small ships don't take long to fill for peak dates and rarely need to offer these” on sale or as part of a larger promotion.

Be flexible.

Put simply, explains Clabbers, “The more flexible you are, the more likely you are to find a lower rate for your cruise.” For example, if you are “very flexible and are looking for a standard room on a large ship on an itinerary that repeats week after week, you are more likely to find a promotional fare.” However, if you’re only open to traveling during a specific timeframe or itinerary (including ones that operate infrequently, such as a world cruise ) in “a category that contains only a few rooms or suites, etc.,” explains Clabbers, “the limited supply will likely result in higher pricing.” Additionally, in some cases, “you may come across a ‘guarantee’ special offer.” In other words, this means that “in return for a lower fare, the cruise line gets to assign your specific room anywhere on the ship, in the category you selected.”

Ironically enough, being flexible sometimes may mean giving up some of your flexibility. For example, says Clabbers, “Some lines, like Celebrity Cruises or Royal Caribbean, offer slightly lower fares if you’re willing to give up some of your flexibility by choosing to pay a nonrefundable deposit instead of a refundable one.”

Book early.

When it comes to snagging the best cruise deals, booking early is ultimately your best bet — “especially if you’re looking to travel on a luxury cruise line , or for unique, popular itineraries,” says Clabbers. “Lines like Silversea, Seabourn, Explora Journeys, and others aim to offer their lowest fares and best promotions when reservations are first accepted for a new itinerary and will raise fares as the departure date comes closer.”

Additionally, according to Curry, this is especially true on small-ship sailings . “Most small ships are counting on filling all their cabins, so they offer the best deals for travelers who plan early.” She goes on to explain that many small-ship lines have even “formalized this system by offering 'capacity-controlled pricing' that offers the best rates furthest in advance with the rate steadily increasing for the same category cabin as you get closer and the ship fills.”

Finally, keep in mind that some cruises can be booked up to three years in advance, which means it’s never too early to start planning.

Or book a last-minute cruise.

Sometimes, it pays to book late — so as long as “you’re very flexible with dates, itinerary, type of room, or location on a ship,” explains Clabbers.

Ashton Palmer, another T+L A-list travel advisor who specializes in expedition sailings , shares similar insight. “If you are flexible and can travel 90 days or less before departure, cruise lines will sometimes extend discounts.”

Stick with one line.

Just as airlines and hotels offer travel rewards programs and perks to loyal customers, most cruise lines do the same, too. Put simply, says Clabbers, “loyalty can pay off.” In fact, “Many cruise lines offer some discounts or credits to spend onboard or other benefits for their returning passengers.” Plus, these programs are free to join, so you have nothing to lose by signing up.

Mark Katzman/Courtesy of Princess Cruises

Cruise with friends or family.

Cruise with your nearest and dearest — and get rewarded for it, too. According to Palmer, cruise lines are often willing to extend a discount “for groups of six or more.” For example, Royal Caribbean , Virgin Voyages , and Princess offer group discounts.

Consider repositioning cruises.

Budget-conscious travelers should certainly consider a repositioning cruise. These unique one-way sailings generally occur at the beginning or end of a cruising season (typically in the spring or fall) when ships need to return to their home ports. Two real-life examples of these itineraries include Celebrity’s Mediterranean Passage Transatlantic sailing (which cruises from Tampa to Barcelona) and Windstar’s Greenland: North Atlantic Odyssey itinerary (which sails from Reykjavik to Montreal).

Keep in mind that these value-packed cruises, which hover around two weeks, feature far more sea days than typical itineraries to account for the travel time between the embarkation and disembarkation ports. As such, you’ll be spending the bulk of your vacation on board.

Bundle up.

Nowadays, many cruise lines offer additional perks and discounts that go far beyond the basics (think: free specialty dining, onboard credits, an open bar, Wi-Fi, gratuities, and, in some cases, pre- and post-cruise hotels and/or airfare). Oceania’s Simply More offer, for example, includes shore excursions, specialty dining, Wi-Fi, and Champagne and wine. Norwegian Cruise Line’s beloved Free at Sea promotion offers similar savings, while select sailings on lines like Ponant and Celebrity include flights .

Guests sailing with luxury all-inclusive line Silversea also have the option to add flights by booking the Door-to-Door All-Inclusive package . You may also be able to find — and book — reduced-cost flights directly through the cruise lines. For example, per its website,  the Holland America Flight Ease program offers passengers the opportunity “to book air travel featuring flight inventory from most airlines, our specially negotiated low prices, the freedom to change your flights with no change fees, and late-arrival protection with 24-hour assistance. In addition, you can earn frequent flier miles with participating airlines,” according to the Holland America website. Similarly, some lines, including Regent Seven Seas Cruises , offer free two- or three-night land programs and a one-night pre-cruise hotel stay for some guests.

Do your research to see if you’re eligible for additional discounts or benefits.

According to Clabbers, select lines, including Cunard and Princess , offer “extra benefits for certain types of passengers,” including added perks and, in some cases, discounted or free fares. Carnival and Norwegian cruise lines offer special military perks and discounts.

How to get the best value on a luxury cruise.

Luxury cruises offer a more upscale and intimate environment on ships designed with all of the luxe finishes of a ritzy boutique hotel, and who doesn’t want to find a way to add a little more luxury, or a few extra shore excursions and pampering on their holiday?

Many cruise lines claim to offer a luxury experience, but the true definition of luxury cruising is defined by the level of inclusions and this is where you can ensure you get the best value on your luxury cruise. While most cruise lines include accommodation, entertainment and most main meals in the upfront cruise fare, luxury cruise lines offer many extras, adding tremendous value for money. We’ve curated a list of insider tips to help you secure more value for money when booking your next luxury cruise.

TA21139_Wave 2022_Dec21_Blog_best value_2_Shop during wave.jpg

Shop during Wave Season

Since cruise lines release their itineraries about 18-months in advance, this is usually the best time to secure your desired cruise itinerary and a range of additional extras. This is commonly known in the industry as ‘Wave Season’ beginning in January each year. This booking period is usually best for price and added inclusions as most luxury cruise lines offer their best fares early, and then raise rates as cabins and suites sell out.

On that note, luxury cruises also sell out quickly unlike other holidays. If you have a set cruise itinerary in mind, booking early is the best way to make sure you’ll be cruising where and when you want, and in the style that you want.

During wave season, luxury cruise lines throw in otherwise-expensive upgrades and value adds like free or reduced airfares, complimentary amenities (think free specialty dining, beverage packages, shore excursions and/or gratuities) and cabin upgrades to entice faster sales. Tip: Look for packages that specifically says "balcony staterooms for the price of outside cabins" or similar to spot the upgrade offers.

Extended itineraries & Cruise/Hotel Night Packages

Want to spend a few extra days in the port on either end of your trip? Cruise lines happily package hotel stays (usually with transfers to or from the ship) with their sailings and will often create these added value itineraries to lure avid cruises to lock in their trips early and as a result are often some of the most popular routes.

Not only do you experience your nights on board during the trip but then have the option to spend more time in destination at either your first or final port, or both! Our Travel Associates Advisors usually recommend considering cruises with this included in the package as a way to make the most of your trip.

Premium vs. Luxury Cruising - is it worth the upgrade?

If you're an experienced high-end premium-line cruiser and often pay for extras like wine and specialty dining – it might actually be better value to upgrade to a luxury line.

Our Travel Advisors can help you compare whether this option may be worth looking into, specifically at what size cabin you get for what price on each line and factoring in any extra costs that add to your vacation budget. While base prices and cabin sizes tend to be somewhat similar, a luxury cruise will also include wines and premium beverages, internet, specialty restaurants and gratuities (tips), among other items you'd pay extra for on a mainstream or premium line. Contact one of our Advisors to find out if you might actually be better served by switching to a luxury cruise line.

Do your research or better, have your Travel Advisor do it for you

While our trusted Advisors will help find the luxury cruise for you (and with all the exclusive value extras we’re able to secure directly with the cruise lines), additionally, it doesn’t hurt to do some research yourself. That way you can get a feel for what average fares on your preferred sailing look like, so when a sale or price drop comes out, like those during Wave Season, you can act fast to lock it in with your travel advisor doing all the heavy lifting for you.

Another tip is to sign up to the Travel Associates newsletter to be alerted when the prices of cruises you're interested in go on sale or to be the first to know when the cruise lines launch their new season itineraries. The internet and email newsletters are some of the best mediums for finding deals and cruise industry news on new itineraries.

Repositioning Cruises

Repositioning Cruises

When ships swap hemispheres for different cruise seasons, venture to a new homeport or go into dry dock for repairs or refurbishment, it is called a repositioning cruise. Joining an ocean cruise that begins and ends in a different port isn’t just exciting, you often get better value for your holiday dollar as well.

Ships reposition all over the world via Asia, the Middle East, South America and Africa. If you’ve dreamed of cruising down the Suez Canal in Egypt or the Panama Canal, a repositioning cruise offers an affordable way to do these journeys.

TA21139_Wave 2022_Dec21_Blog_best value_7_Flexible.jpg

Flexible Cruising

Be Flexible

Travellers who are willing to travel at the drop of a hat and have the flexibility to wait until the last minute, which in cruise timeframes is anywhere from three to six weeks before departure, are sometimes able to find discounted fares. However, this usually applies to the larger premium ships looking to sell off the last of their stock and rarely applies to the smaller boutique luxury cruises.

Be prepared to book the less desirable accommodations – typically cabins without balconies or windows, and staterooms in less popular locations. Similarly, if you can be flexible with dates, sailing during the shoulder season rather than popular summer and holiday weeks can shave a few hundred dollars from your base rate.

Loyalty points and On Board Credits

Just by cruising and by being loyal to one or two of your favourite lines, you can unlock more access to discounts on higher room categories and sometimes even free nights at sea.

It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve cruised before, you will also be eligible for rewards like On Board Credit (OBC) or if you’re a seasoned cruiser, you may score gifts such as complimentary laundry services, internet and upgraded bathroom amenities.

5 unexpected places that sell cruises

Ashley Kosciolek

Bulk toilet paper, discount brand-name clothing and ... a cruise? You might not have your next sailing top of mind while running errands. However, you should know that the places where you stock up on groceries, redeem credit card points and get help with a flat tire might also be able to sell you a cruise.

As you mull options for making a vacation purchase — travel agent , online travel agency, cruise line, direct booking — it's also a smart idea to consider these lesser-known cruise sellers.

Here, I'll discuss some cruise booking options you might not have thought of, including ones where membership could score you a discount or added bonus.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Wholesale clubs

value added travel cruises

Wholesale clubs, where you pay for an annual membership in exchange for shopping in bulk or at a discount, are great places to take advantage of deals on cruises because they offer lowest-price guarantees, onboard perks and even cash back. Both BJ's and Costco sell cruises as part of their respective BJ's Travel and Costco Travel offerings.

Although both clubs sell cruises from most of the major lines — Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Holland America, Norwegian, Princess and Royal Caribbean — BJ's has a larger selection that includes MSC Cruises, as well as most luxury and river cruise brands. Prospective travelers will have access to whichever promotions partner lines are offering at the time.

With Costco, Executive Members get an annual 2% reward certificate on travel purchased through Costco Travel (certificate sent at the time of membership renewal). Members who book through the Costco portal and use a Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi (see rates and fees ) to pay will also get 3% cash back on eligible travel purchases.

BJ's Travel offers a 110% guarantee that you'll get the best price possible on your cruise booking (if you find a better deal within 48 hours of booking). BJ's also offers other perks. At the time of publication, BJ's was offering its members 5% back (up to $500 in the form of a BJ's gift card) with the purchase of qualifying cruises. Plus, if you use a BJ's One™ Mastercard® to pay for your reservation, you'll get 3% cash back. The information for the BJ's One Mastercard has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Additionally, both companies feature timely deals, such as deposit waivers, onboard credit, prepaid gratuities and other extras, according to what the cruise lines are promoting. The only catch, of course, is that you have to be an active member or cardholder in order to take advantage of the promotions and savings provided by these clubs. Costco bookings are not eligible for most cruise lines' upgrade bidding programs, so choose a cabin you know you'll like.

Although AAA and the Canadian Automobile Association are known mainly for their roadside assistance, they also offer travel planning services similar to those offered by a travel agent.

In addition to cruise planning help from a dedicated agent, you can bag discounts and extras available when you book. If you need a pre- or post-cruise hotel, flights or directions to the port, AAA and CAA can help with those, plus round-the-clock assistance if something goes wrong during your vacation.

If you're looking to maximize the return on your cruise investment even further, book using the AAA Member Rewards Visa credit card from Bank of America. It offers 3 points per dollar spent on eligible travel and AAA purchases, which can be redeemed in a number of ways — including more travel.

General deal and discount websites

value added travel cruises

If you're looking for deals in your area, you might turn to Groupon, a website and app that entices shoppers to try the products or services of partnering retailers at a discount. Customers can search for general or location-specific bargains and purchase time-sensitive vouchers for the products and services they're interested in.

Occasionally, cruises are available.

In the past, I've seen Groupon deals for inexpensive sailings with MSC Cruises and Margaritaville at Sea. These types of offers come with various restrictions, and you have to know your travel dates upfront. But, if deep discounts are important to you, I've discovered fares from as low as $65 per person, per night.

Remember those cute Entertainment Books that came stuffed with tear-out coupons for local businesses — the ones every single school seemed to sell and which your parents would buy and then promptly forget about? The company stopped printing the books in 2022 and, instead, features all of its deals on an app (with a $34.99 per year or $4.99 monthly annual fee).

That's key information to have, especially when I tell you that Entertainment has a travel arm, and it includes cruises. Entertainment Cruises sells voyages from most of the popular ocean, river and luxury lines, and it has a 110% guarantee that you won't find a lower price or better deal elsewhere at the time of booking.

Travel loyalty program portals

value added travel cruises

There are few things more satisfying than earning travel by simply traveling, but many cruise line loyalty programs aren't lucrative. That's why it's exciting that you can also earn points and miles by booking cruises via some of the hotel and airline loyalty programs in which you might already be enrolled.

Several airlines — including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, Spirit Airlines and United Airlines — have cruise booking sites that allow you to earn miles every time you purchase a sailing. Bonus points — literally — if you book through one of the portals using the corresponding airline-branded credit card , which will earn you additional miles for buying a voyage.

If you're more of a hotel loyalist than a frequent flyer, you can also book cruises through hotels like Hilton via Hilton Grand Vacations or through Marriott's Cruise With Points program to earn Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy points, respectively. Bonvoy offers the most value of the two, giving cruisers 3 points per dollar spent, up to 30,000 points.

As with airlines, hotels will award even more points for cruise bookings made using cobranded credit cards, such as one of Marriott's Bonvoy cards that will award you up to an additional 3 points per dollar for cruise bookings made through the portal.

Marriott's program also allows Bonvoy members to cash in their points on a cruise . But if you're looking for value beyond points, booking through these channels can help you snag up to 75% off cruise fares, onboard credit and other perks for many of the most well-known cruise lines.

You can also cross-earn across travel verticals. For example, if you're a member of United's MileagePlus frequent flyer program , you can book your sailing through United Cruises while paying for it with, say, your Marriott Bonvoy card, thereby earning both United miles and Marriott points.

Credit card portals

value added travel cruises

If you're an American Express or Chase cardholder, you can use your card's respective travel portal or dedicated agents to book a sailing, potentially earning some extra points and perks in the process. As an example, American Express Travel offers a Cruise Privileges Program that grants passengers up to $300 in onboard credit per cabin, as well as bonus points on cruise bookings made through Amex.

Although cruisers can't book sailings directly via the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal , they can call an agent to handle the reservation over the phone. You can pay with points if you have enough saved or use a credit card that will earn you points toward future redemptions. Chase's cruise program doesn't offer as many extras for cruisers as Amex's does, but Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholders do get up to $300 in annual statement credits when they book travel, including cruises.

One major drawback of these portals is that they only partner with select cruise lines, often excluding at least one or two major brands and some niche options like river cruises.

How it works

In many cases, these providers will sell cruises to consumers either through the cruise lines directly (Groupon) or via a travel agency, such as World Travel Holdings , which oversees bookings made with BJ's, Entertainment and the airlines mentioned above.

Bottom line

If you want to earn points or miles, score perks and extras, and save some money on your cruise fare, these less-conventional booking methods are a great place to look. Just be sure to do some comparison shopping to ensure you're getting the best deal and know which credit cards to use to maximize your spending.

Keep in mind that if you book through one of these third parties, you should inquire ahead of time about whether assistance is available if something goes wrong. Some of the avenues mentioned — auto clubs, airline and hotel booking portals, and wholesale clubs — will have someone available to help. However, with others (like Groupon), you're likely to be on your own and will have to sort out any snags with the cruise line directly.

How Much Does a Cruise Cost?

With the rising cost of everything, cruise fares – some even as low as $27 per person per night based on double occupancy – seem like an incredible bargain. And they certainly can be, but the fares you see advertised online often don't include extras like taxes, fees, port expenses, gratuities, shore excursions, specialty dining, alcoholic beverages, specialty coffees, room service fees and more.

Cruise pricing can be confusing with so many variables. Unless you're sailing with a smaller luxury line that is all-inclusive , your bill on the day of disembarkation may be unexpected or even shocking. Small things like buying bottled water or renting noodles for floating in the ocean at a cruise line's private island can add up quickly. To help you plan better for a cruise vacation , U.S. News has broken down some of the costs and add-ons you need to take into consideration before booking your next getaway on the high seas.

Find your perfect cruise

How much does a one-week cruise cost?

A cruise can cost anywhere from about $109 per person in an interior cabin for a four-night Bahamas cruise up to $101,199 per person for an entry-level suite on a 168-night world cruise – and anywhere in between. Cruise fares vary based on itinerary, number of nights, cabin type, amenities and cruise line. Here are a few examples of base cruise cost ranges on larger cruise lines for various regions:

  • A seven-night Caribbean cruise in November ranges from approximately $270 to $2,600 per person.
  • A seven-night Alaska cruise in May ranges from approximately $250 to $1,700 per person.
  • A seven-night Mediterranean cruise in June ranges from approximately $620 to $2,300 per person.
  • A seven-night Mexico cruise on the Pacific Coast in January ranges from approximately $470 to $700 per person.
  • A seven-night Canada and New England cruise in October ranges from approximately $490 to $1,100 per person.

What's included in the base fare with a larger cruise line?

Mass market cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean International , Norwegian Cruise Line , MSC Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line – and more upscale lines like Celebrity Cruises , Holland America Line , Cunard Line , Disney Cruise Line and Princess Cruises – advertise "starting from" base fares, which are for inside cabins. These are the least expensive staterooms on the ship, and they do not have windows. Staying in these accommodations still gives you access to all the complimentary dining venues and several types of nonalcoholic beverages (such as nonbottled water, iced tea, juices, hot coffee and tea), as well as the ship's pools, gym facilities, kids clubs and onboard entertainment.

If you want a room with a view – or a larger stateroom – consider booking an ocean view room with a window, or a cabin with a balcony or veranda. With these rooms, you'll have access to all the ship's included amenities and typically more spacious accommodations for the week. Of course, this option will come at a higher price point.

No matter which room category you choose, port expenses, taxes and fees are not included in the base fares, and they're automatically added to the cost of your cruise. The amount of these charges will depend on the length of your cruise and where you're sailing. Gratuities for the staff and crew are also additional.

What if you want more amenities and perks?

For more perks, you can splurge on a suite or a higher room category. With Celebrity's Concierge Class, for example, you'll be treated to amenities such as a welcome lunch, a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine, personalized concierge service, an exclusive destination seminar, pillow selection upon request, laundry service and more.

With Disney Cruise Line's Concierge Staterooms and Suites, guests have a dedicated concierge agent offering personalized assistance for pre-arrival planning for port adventures, dining reservations, other onboard activities and special requests. You'll also get priority check-in and boarding, a private welcome reception, free Basic Surf Wi-Fi, access to a private lounge with complimentary food and beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic) served throughout the day, and other perks.

You may opt to stay within an exclusive area of the ship, such as the MSC Yacht Club, The Haven by Norwegian or Celebrity's The Retreat. These high-end private retreats offer a mostly all-inclusive experience with additional features, while still including access to all the entertainment, dining venues and more on board. The accommodations can cost hundreds more dollars per day, but you'll have an experience similar to sailing on a small luxury vessel.

For example, the MSC Yacht Club offers an intimate all-inclusive space within its larger ships. The private area is accessible with a key card and features luxurious suites, a dedicated concierge, 24-hour butler service, a private restaurant and lounge, a secluded pool deck, priority reservations for specialty dining, VIP seating for entertainment, and other amenities. There are also additional dining and snack options throughout the day at the pool and lounge.

You'll find similar amenities in Norwegian's and Celebrity's private retreats, including priority boarding and disembarkation, exclusive sun deck areas, and priority access when boarding tenders for going ashore.

Guests of MSC's Yacht Club receive the line's Premium Extra Beverage Package, which covers premium liquors, fine wines and Champagne in the Yacht Club and at most other venues on the ship. Accommodations in The Retreat on Celebrity also include premium beverages throughout the ship. If you're staying in The Haven by Norwegian, a beverage package is not covered in the pricing, but Norwegian frequently advertises its "Free at Sea" package, which includes free unlimited bar, free specialty dining, complimentary Wi-Fi, discounts on excursions and other perks.

What factors determine pricing?

Base pricing and the additional components vary greatly among the cruise lines, so you'll need to determine what your budget is for the trip – and what you can and can't live without when it comes to accommodations and amenities. Travelers may also find that one cruise line has a deal or promotion with reduced pricing that covers airfare, specialty dining, a beverage package, free Wi-Fi or other perks in the advertised rate (such as the Norwegian package mentioned above), while another line isn't running any specials for a similar itinerary.

Voyages on older cruise ships tend to be less expensive, so if you're on a tight budget, consider a ship with fewer bells and whistles. If you're sailing on a short itinerary in the Bahamas and plan to lounge by the pool or on the beach all day, you may not be concerned about having high-tech onboard amenities, martini bars and several specialty restaurants.

Save the money to splurge on more expensive fares when you're planning to sail on longer voyages on larger and newer ships . You'll want several days at sea to enjoy the onboard amenities on some vessels, such as a three-level racetrack and a 10-story-tall slide on Norwegian Viva . It would take a full week (or more) to explore all the entertainment options aboard Royal Caribbean International's newest ship, Icon of the Seas – or all the new entertainment offerings and attractions on Princess Cruises' latest addition to its fleet: Sun Princess.

Another significant factor to consider is the time of year you want to travel. Better deals are available in the offseason, but the offseason varies depending on what part of the world you're traveling to. For example, May is a great time to find a deal in the Caribbean. The offseason – or shoulder season – in that market typically runs from May to November. However, keep in mind this period overlaps with hurricane season .

You also may be able to find last-minute deals in many other destinations if you're flexible. Working with a travel agent is an excellent way to learn of last-minute specials and cruise deals that offer add-ons like beverage packages, specialty dining inclusions, shore excursions and other perks. You can also check out the online specials that change frequently.

Solo travelers may pay more

Back of woman holding her hat, with her scarf flying in the wind, on a cruise ship

If you're traveling alone, you may also need to factor in a single supplement, which can add up to as much as 100% of the cruise fare. To save money, bring a friend so you can access the lower double occupancy fare or consider lines that feature rooms for solo travelers; select Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Celebrity ships offer solo staterooms, as do other cruise lines. Check out our guide to the best solo cruises with no supplement fare .

These smaller accommodations – typically ranging from around 100 to more than 200 square feet in size – are priced and designed for solo travelers. Key card access to Norwegian's Studio Lounge is included with the line's solo cabins and offers a place to relax and mix and mingle with other cruisers. Other lines that offer solo cabins include Holland America, MSC, Cunard and Virgin Voyages . While the price may not be as inexpensive as the double occupancy fare when traveling with someone else, these accommodations offer some savings over a typical solo fare.

Some lines often feature special deals on select sailings where the single supplement is waived or reduced. A knowledgeable travel agent specializing in cruises can assist in finding the best offers for solo travelers.

'Kids cruise free' promotions can help families save

Smiling woman holding laughing daughter on a cruise ship in the Norwegian fjords

If you're traveling with kids, many cruise lines – such as Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Disney and Princess – offer "kids sail free" promotions periodically throughout the year. You can also find discounted fares for children on select sailings.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has fares as low as $999 for children 17 and younger on a variety of select voyages. Regent's regular fares typically start at around $3,600 per person for a seven-night cruise, so this is a significant savings. This fare also includes unlimited complimentary shore excursions and all the benefits and perks of sailing with an all-inclusive luxury cruise line. Regent even has a current promotion where kids sail free on a selection of seven- to 20-night itineraries in Europe and the U.K.

Food and beverages are another expense to consider

Once you determine your total cruise fare with the taxes, fees, port charges and gratuities, you'll need to budget for the additional expenses you'll have on the ship – and these extras can add up quickly. Meals at specialty dining venues, alcoholic drinks and other beverages may not be covered in the basic cruise fare. You'll also have to pay for room service on many ships.

You can purchase specialty dining, beverage and Wi-Fi packages before or during your cruise. These packages offer savings over purchasing everything individually – and it's best to buy them once you book your cruise, as they're typically cheaper to purchase before you board the ship.

For an example of the savings with a food package, Royal Caribbean offers up to a 40% discount with a dining package. This package includes reduced pricing for children ages 6 to 12, while kids 5 and younger eat for free. The cruise line's unlimited dining package also offers discounts on bottles of wine.

In addition to specialty dining venues that charge a flat fee – usually between $30 and $50 – there are also restaurants that charge as much as $135 or more for dinner, such as the adult venues on Disney Cruise Line's ships. Other restaurants feature a la carte menus with sushi, bar food and even steakhouses that price out individual courses. Some of these venues may not include gratuities, so that's another add-on. If you decide to dine at any of these spots – and they're not included in your package – you'll have to budget for them in the total cruise price.

Enticing dessert items in the gelato and ice cream shops on some ships also come with a price, including Coco's and Dolce Gelato on Norwegian or MSC's Venchi Gelati and Chocolate.

There are endless options when considering beverage packages, too, so you need choose what fits best with your interests and budget. Some of the package options are only for nonalcoholic drinks like fountain sodas, sparkling waters and coffees, while premium or deluxe beverage packages cover beer, wine and cocktails, so they are more expensive.

Depending on the cruise line, most premium packages will usually cover drinks up to $15, but many craft cocktails on cruise ships can be quite expensive, costing much more, especially if you request a specific brand for the liquor. If you have the premium package and want to splurge on the fancy beverage, you'll have to pay the difference.

It's important to know that there are a few select venues and bars on some ships that do not accept a beverage package, so you'll have to pay extra for drinks at those places. For example, MSC's ships have several signature venues that do not accept drink packages, such as Hola! Tacos & Cantina, Lavazza coffee shops and Venchi 1878.

Norwegian offers a package that covers top-shelf beverages and select bottles of wine and Champagne, Starbucks coffee, bottled water, soda, specialty drinks and other beverages. You'll need to budget around $138 per person per day for this option – and an additional 20% gratuity. This type of package can add up to quite a bit of money on a seven-day cruise or longer. For more information, consult our guide on the drink package options for major cruise lines .

Bundle pricing

For additional savings, look into bundle pricing that includes specialty dining, Wi-Fi, photos and more. Purchasing them together may be more cost-effective. For example, Holland America offers the "Have It All" package, which encompasses a $100 shore excursion credit, the Signature Beverage Package (including the service charge), one evening of specialty dining and the Surf Wi-Fi package for a six- to nine-day cruise. If you're sailing for 10 to 20 days or even longer, the benefits increase. The line estimates savings of 50% when you purchase this bundle.

While these packages may not always work out in your favor, you'll at least know what your dining, imbibing, excursions, Wi-Fi and even additional activities on the cruise will cost.

Additional costs on a cruise ship

Cruisers will also incur additional fees from excursions, fitness classes, spa treatments, access to thermal spa rooms, babysitting services, ship tours, wine tastings, cocktail demonstrations, cooking classes, laundry services, and some entertainment venues and activities on the ship. Examples include Norwegian's racetrack, Viva Speedway; high-tech attractions like the Robotron thrill ride and the XD cinema on MSC Seascape ; and Carnival's first roller coaster at sea, BOLT.

See some of the more popular added costs you'll want to consider below.

Wi-Fi access

If you need Wi-Fi during the cruise, that's another cost to factor into the total price. Here are two examples of pricing for internet plans for two cruise lines.

Carnival offers three options for Wi-Fi, using Starlink. The basic Social Wi-Fi Plan gives you access to certain social media channels like Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp and more, starting at about $15 per person per day. The cost increases to roughly $20 per person per day with the Value Wi-Fi Plan. This option gives you access to your email and to sites for weather, news, finance and more. It does not support Skype or music and video streaming services like Spotify and Netflix during your cruise.

The last option, Carnival's Premium Wi-Fi Plan, starts at around $19 per person per day and offers speeds up to three times faster than the Value plan. With this plan you can make Zoom calls and use Skype. For all three of these plans, you can save 15% off the total price if you book in advance of your trip.

Celebrity also uses Starlink. The line's "All Included" fare includes basic internet and a classic drink package, which the line says can save you potentially hundreds of dollars. If you don't book that fare, Wi-Fi plans range from around $20 per day for basic service to premium Wi-Fi at $35 per day.

  • Shore excursions

If you're traveling to far-flung or new destinations, you'll want to book shore excursions. Cruise lines recommend that you book excursions directly with them rather than hiring an independent tour company or operator, but it can be more expensive to book tours through the cruise line.

However, if you experienced a delay on an independent tour and couldn't get back to the ship on time, there's a chance you could get left behind if you're not on a ship-sponsored tour. If you decide to go with a private tour guide, be sure to book an excursion that will allow you to arrive back at the ship with plenty of time to spare before the vessel departs for the next destination. Most tour operators in busy cruise ports work with the cruise ship schedules all the time, so you should be fine with a reputable independent guide.

Some trips last an entire day or are once-in-a-lifetime adventures like dog-sledding on a glacier in Alaska or taking a helicopter ride over the active volcanoes and waterfalls in Iceland. These types of excursions can be costly, ranging anywhere from hundreds to even thousands of dollars. If these types of experiences are not in your budget, look for historic walking or panoramic driving tours. These activities are shorter in duration and typically the least expensive tours available on the cruise. Many of these types of tours will cost less than $100. And, of course, there are always other options available that range between the lower and higher price range of excursions.

If your ship is docked directly in the town or city, then you'll be able to explore off the ship on your own for free. Some cruise lines also offer complimentary shuttle buses into town or a round-trip ride for a nominal fee if it's not within walking distance of the ship. That's another less expensive option for you to sightsee, shop or grab lunch in town.

Transportation

Transportation is another expense that's often overlooked in the total cost of a cruise. Consider if you'll be driving or flying to the cruise port. If you're driving, you'll have to pay for gas and parking at the port – and maybe a hotel the night before the cruise, depending on when you arrive and when your ship is scheduled to set sail. Don't forget the meals or beverages you'll purchase on the way.

If you're flying to the port, especially on a long-distance flight, it's best to come in a day early. In that case, you'll also have to pay for a hotel, transfers from the airport to the hotel and then a transfer (private hire, Uber or cab) to the ship's terminal. There will also be meals to budget for while you're in town before the cruise and a ride back to the airport after the cruise.

Souvenirs or forgotten items

Don't forget to account for purchases on the ship. Items that you forgot to bring from home will be more expensive on board. It's also easy to run up the bill when buying souvenirs for yourself or the kids. It's a good idea to periodically check your bill online or with guest services to see the current balance. You can keep a running tab of what you've billed to your stateroom – and also make sure that the charges are correct.

Cruise pricing checklist

To sum it up, here's a checklist of major items that will help you to compare costs across cruise lines and tally up the total cost of a cruise:

  • Base cruise price
  • Taxes, fees, gratuities and port expenses
  • Specialty dining
  • Food and beverage packages
  • Optional activities (such as spa treatments or extra-fee entertainment on the ship)
  • Miscellaneous expenses (such as meals and beverages ashore)
  • Air or ground travel to the port
  • Hotel prior to embarking

If you don't want to budget for all the individual expenses related to a cruise – and you don't need the over-the-top entertainment of a larger cruise ship – consider booking a mostly all-inclusive or fully all-inclusive cruise with a luxury cruise line . These cruise lines include almost everything in your cruise fare.

Mostly all-inclusive cruises

One option for a mostly all-inclusive cruise is Viking Ocean Cruises . The line's 12 all-veranda ocean-going vessels accommodate between 930 to 998 guests based on double occupancy – and all of Viking's ships feature the same categories of staterooms and suites, dining, lounges, and entertainment venues across the fleet. The ships offer an immersive cultural curriculum on board with regional dishes, destination performances and enrichment lectures.

Viking's fares include veranda accommodations, port taxes and fees, free Wi-Fi, access to the spa and fitness center, 24-hour room service, ground transportation (if you book airfare with Viking), and one complimentary excursion in each port. You'll also have alternative dining options at no extra charge, plus free beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner on board the ship. Specialty coffees, teas and bottled water are available 24 hours a day at no extra charge.

If you like to have an aperitif before your evening meal or an after-dinner cocktail, those beverages will be at an additional cost. You'll also need to budget for any optional shore excursions that are not included in the fare.

Keep in mind that Viking is an adults-only cruise line , so children younger than 18 are not permitted.

All-inclusive cruises

Cruise ship balcony deck with railing and red lifebuoy

Regent Seven Seas, Silversea Cruises and Seabourn Cruise Line boast all-inclusive luxury experiences with shipwide amenities such as ocean-facing suites, butlers, premium spirits, fully stocked in-suite bars, no tipping and complimentary dining at world-class restaurants.

Additional perks with Regent Seven Seas include complimentary unlimited shore excursions, free two- or three-night land programs, a free one-night hotel stay before the cruise departure, transfers from the airport to the ship, and business class or economy airfare (depending on the destination).

Silversea offers door-to-door arrangements where everything is handled by the cruise line. You can also opt for a port-to-port all-inclusive rate if you prefer to make your own travel arrangements. If you're on one of the cruise line's expedition cruises, fares will include a pre- or post-cruise hotel stay. All door-to-door and port-to-port Silversea fares cover a selection of complimentary shore excursions in each port.

If you're interested in an even smaller ship – and are sailing to the Caribbean or Mediterranean – SeaDream Yacht Club features an intimate luxury experience on its two 56-stateroom yachts. The fares include top-notch cuisine, an open bar, gratuities, complimentary daily yoga, access to water sports and movies under the stars.

How much does a luxury cruise cost for two?

If you want to go on a mostly adults-only luxury ship, what can you expect to pay for two people? This will depend on the ship, where you want to sail and for how long – and what amenities are included in the fare.

For a seven-night cruise in the Caribbean in December 2024 round-trip from Miami with Regent Seven Seas, an all-inclusive cruise fare with suite accommodations starts at $7,398 ($3,699 per person). There are additional perks and savings available, depending on the level of accommodations you book and if you combine this cruise with another voyage. You can also check with a travel agent specializing in cruises to see if they have access to other promotions.

For a Silversea cruise in December 2025 that sails round-trip from Bridgetown, Barbados, the all-inclusive port-to-port cruise fare starts at $9,800 for two people ($4,900 per person) in suite accommodations. Contact a travel agent before booking to see if they can offer upgrades or additional amenities.

While the price tag may seem high, compare the total cost with the base fare on a larger cruise ship and then add in all the extras.

See the top cruises on  GoToSea .

The bottom line

The average cost of a cruise is all over the map – and there are many variables to consider. Hiring a cruise specialist to navigate the rough waters may be your best option. Cruise specialists are also privy to special deals and incentives that you may not be able to access on your own. Travel agents can also advise you of promotions that may include free specialty dining, beverage packages, complimentary Wi-Fi, shore excursions, discounts on solo and family travel, and more. This approach will save you the hassle of searching online or calling the individual cruise companies to check on what specials are available.

If you'd rather have one price with everything included so there's little room for surprises at the end of the trip, consider a mostly or fully all-inclusive cruise fare. If you don't need waterslides for the kids, big Broadway shows and high-tech entertainment, a cruise on a small luxury line may suit you well.

When doing the math and comparing the costs, you might be surprised how similar in price cruising with a larger mass market cruise line and a smaller luxury line can be. In the end, your decision will come down to your personal preferences and what you value most for your cruise vacation.

How to Find Last-Minute Cruise Deals

Cruising is back – in a big way – after all the turmoil and shutdowns in the industry during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Cruise Lines International Association's 2023 State of the Cruise Industry report, the intent to cruise is higher now than it was in December 2019, before the pandemic. About 85% of travelers who have been on a cruise will cruise again, which is 6% higher than it was pre-COVID.

John Lovell, president of the Travel Leaders Group division of Internova Travel Group, tells us, "Cruising has roared back since the pandemic and the lifting of sailing restrictions. It's a true success story! That means that we will see (and are seeing) full ships, even more so than pre-pandemic." He adds, "While Caribbean cruises remain popular, travelers are embracing river cruises, expedition cruises, smaller ships and off-the-beaten-path ports. There really is a cruise for everyone."

CLIA's report also states that passenger volume for 2023 is projected to reach an astounding 31.5 million passengers – 106% of the volume in 2019. In addition, the cruise industry is seeing higher numbers of solo travelers and people with mobility challenges – and there are more Gen X and millennials booking cruise vacations.

Chris Gray Faust, the executive editor of Cruise Critic, says that cancellation policies have also returned to normal with cruise bookings back to pre-pandemic levels, particularly for mainstream lines like Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruise Line . You also probably won't find many deals on sailings in high season and on the most anticipated new ships .

With more demand for cruise travel – one of the fastest-growing sectors of tourism – how can you find a last-minute cruise deal in 2023? Read on to find out how to book your dream cruise vacation for less.

When to find the best cruise deals

Scoring a great cruise deal depends on several factors, including the type of experience you're looking for ( adults-only or family-friendly , for example), the destination, the length of the sailing, the time of year and your flexibility to travel.

Lovell recommends booking early for the best pricing. "For many cruise lines, especially the expedition products and with some luxury lines, the best time to find deals is when they open new sailings," he says. "The cruises fill up quickly, so usually the best offer is the first offering in terms of pricing. Some of the larger cruise lines will have pricing and value-added promotions on sailings that still have open space about 100 days prior to sailing."

Summer 2023

If you're planning on traveling within the next few months, you may be able to score a last-minute cruise deal to some destinations, such as Alaska . According to Bob Levinstein, CEO of CruiseCompete.com, "There are still some great deals for the summer, especially in Alaska, which is particularly soft right now."

A representative from Priceline notes that the travel agency is also offering great deals for summer cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean.

When you're looking at pricing for cruises, be sure to compare fares that include the same costs, Levinstein advises. Some advertised fares that seem like an incredible deal don't include the port taxes and fees, which can substantially raise the price of your vacation.

Within 90 days of sailing

Gray Faust says the window for finding last-minute cruise deals is within 90 days of a sailing. "That three-month mark is when final deposits are due on a cruise, and historically the last point you could cancel your cruise without financial penalty," she says. "At that point, cruise lines try to fill those vacant cabins, usually in the form of slashed fares to entice people to book."

Levinstein agrees. "While the market has heated up, the closer-in the sailing the more likely you will find a bargain." He adds, "But as last-minute deals are based on how full a particular sailing on a particular ship might be at a given time, shopping around is often rewarded regardless of overall market conditions."

Fall or spring

You may find cheaper cruise fares if you're able to book a last-minute cruise departing in the spring or fall when most families with children in school can't travel. As such, cruise lines typically have more availability and lower pricing during these times.

Wave season

If you're willing to book a cruise during the promotional period known as "wave season" – which spans early January through the end of March – you may be able to find a last-minute cruise deal that fits your budget.

Hurricane season

Planning a last-minute cruise during hurricane season in the Caribbean and Mexico – from June 1 to Nov. 30 – is another option. These months coincide with the shoulder season in those regions, so it can be a great time to find cruise savings. If you do book a cruise during hurricane season, consider investing in a travel insurance policy that has trip interruption and trip cancellation benefits. You'll also want to make sure that all of your prepaid and nonrefundable expenses are covered in the policy.

Early December

Levinstein says the first two weeks of December are also a great time to take a cruise. Early December is typically when families are preparing for the holidays at home or getting ready to travel at the end of the month for Christmas and New Year's, so it's an ideal time to go on a cruise for less.

How to find last-minute cruise deals

Cruise line sites.

If you're internet-savvy and don't mind perusing the cruise lines' websites individually, check out their advertised discounted fares, included amenities and special bonus exclusive offers. These special fares often include free upgrades, airfare and credit for onboard spending. The types and level of perks may increase depending on the stateroom category.

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line offers a number of Free at Sea offers. These deals include unlimited open bar, shore excursion credits, dining at specialty restaurants, complimentary Wi-Fi and discounted rates for the second guest. Third and fourth guests staying in the same stateroom even get to sail for free with some deals.

In addition to the Free at Sea offers, Norwegian features CruiseFirst, a special bonus offer that essentially allows cruisers to earn free money. For example, if you purchase a $150 CruiseFirst certificate today for a six-day or longer voyage, it will double in value and you'll have $300 to spend on a cruise that you can take as early as 120 days from the purchase date. The certificates expire within three years.

If you're looking for reduced fares on a luxury cruise, it'll likely be more challenging to find a last-minute deal, with even lengthy – and expensive – world cruises selling out within hours. Levinstein explains this is because there's more demand than supply, when compared with the entry-level market.

Cruise deal aggregator sites

If you prefer to use cruise deal aggregator sites, you can find last-minute cruises across the industry all in one place. Simply sort your findings by the month you'd like to travel, the length of your intended trip and where you wish to cruise. These are some of the best resources for finding cruise discounts:

  • Cruise Critic
  • Tripadvisor
  • Cruise Compete

"Some lines began steering away from last-minute fare drops a few years ago, so keep an eye out for value-add deals as well," Gray Faust says. "While you might not get a super cheap base fare, things like free gratuities, drink packages and/or shore excursions could actually save you even more than you'd save on a slashed price."

'Kids sail free' fares

Some cruise lines allow kids to sail free , greatly reducing the total price of and/or adding value to your cruise. MSC Cruises allows guests ages 17 and younger to cruise for free year-round when they're the third and fourth passengers in the same stateroom with their parents. If you're considering a family cruise, check out the other cruise lines that offer similar promotions where children sail free, including Holland America Line and Norwegian.

Cruise line loyalty programs

Consider joining your preferred cruise line's loyalty and membership programs for free upgrades. These are some of the best options:

  • Carnival Cruise Line's VIFP Club:  This program features up to 40% discounts off fares, up to $50 in onboard credits, access to exclusive deals and other perks. Carnival VIFP members receive a loyalty number and can watch their points and rewards accrue online.
  • Viking Cruises ' Explorer Society:   Viking's program offers past cruisers travel credits to use on future voyages, as well as members-only cocktail parties on the ship. Members are also privy to new itineraries and limited-time offers.
  • Princess Cruises ' Captain's Circle:  Benefits with the Captain's Circle are based on the number of cruises you've taken. Some perks include early access to new itineraries, discounts for the onboard retail shops and excursions, complimentary minibar setups, priority disembarkation, access to the Platinum and Elite lounges, complimentary wine tasting events, and more.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line's Latitudes Rewards:  This tiered program allows cruisers to earn discounts on select Norwegian products and services, such as beverage packages and signature spa treatments. You also get priority check-in, an exclusive cocktail party while on board, laundry service and more.

Cruise deal aggregator loyalty programs

You can also find loyalty programs through sites such as Expedia. An Expedia Rewards membership is free and offers discounts on travel; depending on your level (Blue, Silver or Gold), there are additional perks and benefits. You also earn rewards points to use toward booking future trips.

"On the Expedia website and through nearly 300 Expedia Cruises retail locations across North America, Expedia offers Member Prices, saving travelers up to 10% on last-minute deals, along with exclusive promotions on a variety of cruises," a company spokesperson says. "Expedia also secures special rates in advance on the most popular itineraries and cruise lines through the Expedia Exclusive Staterooms program. Most of all, travelers can reach out to one of Expedia's Vacation Consultants who can help navigate the current environment, answer any questions and help find the best value on their ideal vacations."

Travel advisors

Enlisting the help of a knowledgeable travel advisor can make planning easier – and it's one of the best ways to find last-minute cruise deals. Advisors, especially those specializing in cruises, usually have unique access to perks and discounts for big savings with cruise lines that can further enhance the value of your vacation and/or lower the total price.

Lovell agrees with this tip. "Demand for cruising is very high. I would always recommend booking early and working with a travel advisor," he says. "While there are lots of new ships, they often fill up quickly since travelers are eager to try out the latest and greatest the cruise lines have to offer."

Some aggregator sites also have their own travel advisors to assist in your search. Head of Priceline Cruises Denise Bialek says, "We highly recommend calling one of our Priceline Cruise advisors, as they are the most knowledgeable about the best rate options, know how to combine promotions to get the best deal and will save you time navigating the plethora of cruise lines, cabin categories, pricing, port charges and more." She adds, "An advantage of booking with one of our Priceline Cruise advisors is access to all cruise line offers and loyalty perks, in addition to our many Priceline exclusive deals, all supported by 24/7 service."

Additionally, keep in mind that travel advisors have insight into additional restrictions and the condition of each cruise line.

All-inclusive cruises

Though it may seem counterintuitive, you may be able to score a better value by booking an all-inclusive (or mostly all-inclusive) voyage than a budget cruise with a cheaper base fare. While these options are primarily in the luxury cruise line category, some fares are especially attractive thanks to included airfare costs, transfers to the ship, meals at all dining venues, premium wines and spirits, Wi-Fi access, and more.

When you book one of these cruises, you'll know the total cost upfront, and there won't be any unwanted surprises when you close out your shipboard account at the end of the cruise. Some of the traditional extras on noninclusive cruise lines – like bottled water, snacks, specialty coffee, gratuities or even beach equipment rentals on the line's private island – can add up quickly, diminishing the impact of your original fare savings. These are some of the all-inclusive cruise options:

  • Viking Ocean Cruises:  On  Viking Ocean Cruises , travelers enjoy veranda staterooms; all meals (including alternative dining); beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner; one complimentary excursion in every port; and more, all in the base fares.
  • Silversea Cruises:  Silversea Cruises  boasts door-to-door all-inclusive fares that encompass private transfers, gourmet meals, butler service, beverages and at least one complimentary excursion in every port.
  • Regent Seven Seas Cruises:  Regent Seven Seas Cruises  offers two-for-one all-inclusive fares that also feature business class airfare on international flights, free two- or three-night land programs, a one-night pre-cruise hotel stay, free unlimited beverages and open bars, complimentary dining in specialty restaurants, unlimited Wi-Fi, shore excursions, prepaid gratuities, and more.

These lines also offer other discounts, and you may be able to combine them with exclusive offers that your travel advisor can access.

Book an all-inclusive cruise on  GoToSea , a service of U.S. News.

Short cruises

Three- to five-night cruises generally equate to instant savings since they have lower fares than voyages lasting a week or longer. You may also be able to drive to the port, saving on airfare and other travel expenses. If you sail from ports in Florida or Texas, you can visit destinations in the Bahamas, the Caribbean and Mexico; ports of call may include stops at private, cruise line-owned islands like Royal Caribbean International's Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.

If you're in the northeast U.S., you can book a short sailing to Bermuda  aboard a few different lines. Bermuda sailings with Carnival Cruises depart from New York City and Norfolk, Virginia, while Royal Caribbean sails to the nearby island from New York City and Baltimore .

From Los Angeles , embark on four-night Royal Caribbean cruises to Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico. With Celebrity Cruises , passengers can book six-night voyages that call on select California cities and Vancouver . The line also offers six-night, round-trip sailings from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Shorter itineraries are less expensive not only because of their length, but also because they typically don't use the cruise lines' newest, largest vessels. Still, some ships have been updated, including Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas, which underwent a $116 million amplification in 2020. Its upcoming itineraries make short trips between Miami and the Bahamas.

Repositioning cruises

Repositioning cruises are another option for booking a great cruise deal. The price on these voyages is less expensive since most of the days are spent at sea as the ships move from one region of the world to another. The itineraries are longer, so you'll need to have a flexible schedule for extended travel.

One of the pros of booking these cruises is that you'll get to see incredible destinations like Hawaii, Australia, Fiji, Portugal, Spain and Italy – with considerable savings. If you enjoy spending time on board the ship and don't need a port of call to explore every day, then this may be a great cost-saving option to consider.

For example, Celebrity has a 16-night Mediterranean Passage Transatlantic sailing from Rome to Tampa, Florida , in November 2023. The sailing includes eight ports and nine sea days, with fares starting at $899 per person.

Middle East

Until recently, almost all cruises through the Middle East formed part of world cruises, or long  sailings such as UK to Australia, but just a few years ago one company started 7-night round-trip cruises from Dubai. Since then demand has rocketed, and there are now several cruise lines offering regular cruising seasons in the Arabian Gulf. For cruise passengers looking to experience something out of the ordinary, the lands of Arabia are full of Eastern promise.

Many attractions.

It's not just the gorgeous beaches and endless warm sunshine that make the idea of Middle Eastern cruising so attractive, though these are a big draw. The region is the cradle of world history and the ancient birthplace of three of the great religions, meaning that cruise stops include some of the world's most iconic historical sites. Add the fascinating traditional cultures, awe-inspiring desert scenery, and the world's most fabulous shopping in bustling bazaars and colossal malls, and you have all the ingredients for a truly sensational cruise.

Dubai Cruises

The Dubai cruising season runs from December to March, when sunshine is guaranteed. For longer sailings, through Suez and along the coast of Africa, cruise lines offer sailings during spring, autumn and winter. Most cruises avoid the scorching hot summer season.

The 7-night Dubai cruises usually focus on cultural explorations, desert adventures and, of course, shopping, and call at Abu Dhabi and Muscat, Oman, sometimes including Bahrain and Qatar as well. Longer itineraries, which usually form part of a world cruise, pass through the Suez Canal and sail along the Red Sea and round the Gulf of Aden, passing Saudi Arabia. Port stops are likely to include Aqaba in Jordan, Safaga in Egypt, gateway to Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.

Ports of Call

For cruises leaving from Dubai, the first ports of call will be Abu Dhabi, capital of the UAE, and Muscat in Oman, with possible overnight stays. The cruise port of Abu Dhabi lies on an island jutting out into the Arabian Gulf, offering views of glittering skyscrapers piercing the sky, and of the Corniche, the spectacular waterfront promenade, especially breathtaking when illuminated at night. Muscat, with its ancient city walls and gates and its elegant Islamic architecture, also has gorgeous beaches and one of the best souks in the region.

At the port of Aqaba, further along the Red Sea, you can see three countries, Egypt, Israel and Jordan, from your ship. Aqaba is famous for its superb coral reef, but the main reason for stopping there is for access to Petra, the mysterious red-hued city carved into the rocks. This is a sight not to be missed, as are the dramatic landscapes of Wadi Rum.

Although the region has stunning beaches, the focus of Middle East cruises will always be on cultural experience rather than on sunbathing and beach frolics. From Egypt's ancient pyramids to Dubai's futuristic skyscrapers, the region is a mesmerising collection of unique lands that make up an unforgettable journey. It's an adventure everyone should have once in a lifetime.

These major cruise lines are changing their displayed prices. Here's why.

Portrait of Nathan Diller

  • California Senate Bill 478 – also known as the “Honest Pricing Law” or “Hidden Fees Statute” – will take effect Monday.
  • The law bans businesses from listing or advertising “a price for a good or service that does not include all required fees or charges other than certain government taxes and shipping costs.”

That is changing how many major cruise lines display their prices, and not just for travelers in the Golden State.

Cruise prices may look higher as of next week – but that doesn’t mean they are.

California Senate Bill 478 – also known as the “Honest Pricing Law” or “Hidden Fees Statute” – will take effect Monday. The law bans businesses from listing or advertising “a price for a good or service that does not include all required fees or charges other than certain government taxes and shipping costs,” according to an FAQ page from the state’s Office of the Attorney General.

“The statute does not change what price a business can charge or what may be included in that cost,” the attorney general's office said. “The law simply requires that the price listed include all mandatory charges.”

Which cruise lines will change how their pricing is listed?

◾ Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises will update the way they display pricing in the U.S. Customers “will now see pricing that is inclusive of their selected cruise fare and all required taxes and fees,” a spokesperson for the brands’ parent company, Royal Caribbean Group , told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. “We are also supporting our travel partners across the country ahead of this upcoming change.”

◾ Norwegian Cruise Line will do the same, incorporating “applicable taxes, fees and port expenses” into advertised prices in the U.S. and Canada by Monday.“This change will only impact the way we display our prices and will not affect the prices that our guests pay to enjoy a cruise with us or the portion of the cruise fare that is commissionable for our travel partners,” a spokesperson for the line said in an emailed statement. “We are committed to delivering exceptional vacation experiences at every step of the cruise journey and we hope this change will provide our guests with a more satisfying booking experience.”

◾ MSC Cruises added government fees and taxes to advertised overall prices for U.S. bookings on Wednesday. “These costs are now seamlessly integrated into the total advertised price, providing a simple and transparent booking experience that will not impact the overall price paid by our guests,” a spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

What are junk fees?: Travelers are drowning in them during the summer of surcharges

◾ Disney Cruise Line plans to comply with the law.

◾ Carnival Corp., which operates major lines such as Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, and others, also made the change nationally to ensure consistency in advertised pricing, according to a spokesperson for the company.“The great news is that the final price paid hasn't changed, simply the way it is displayed,” they said in an emailed statement. “Our cruise lines still deliver the same great, affordable value and unforgettable cruise experiences vacationers love.”Several others already wrap those costs into their advertised prices, including the high-end Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises – also part of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. – Viking and Explora Journeys , the luxury brand from the MSC Group.

7 Best Cruise Stocks to Buy Now

Many cruise stocks have yet to bounce back to their pre-pandemic prices, but the industry is seeing positive demand and revenue growth.

Cruise Stocks to Buy Now

Cruise stocks can continue their run as long as travel demand stays strong.

After a gloomy performance during the pandemic, many cruise stocks have delivered gains for long-term investors. The cruise industry is poised to benefit from a multiyear boom, however, as Grand View Research projects that it will maintain a compound annual growth rate of 11.5% from now until 2030.

While growth was easy to find as the industry recovered from the pandemic, some cruise stocks have posted double-digit returns year to date. Many of these same companies have rising revenue and profit margins. But despite positive sentiment, many cruise stocks still have not returned to their pre-pandemic prices.

Cruise Stock Risks to Keep in Mind

With the pandemic largely in the rear-view mirror, the travel sector carries some risks. Some stocks are riskier than others, but John Engle, president of Almington Capital, says some risks specifically apply to cruise stocks.

"The biggest risk for cruise stocks is sustainable profitability," says Engle. "Many cruise operators are carrying an awful lot of debt, and it is not clear whether they will be able to service it over the long run. Thin profit margins and high debt should always be a cause for concern for investors looking at cyclical industries. Even a mild recession could be enough to devastate cruise operators' bottom lines."

An economic slowdown may be on the way. The latest U.S. jobs report, released earlier this month, revealed lower job growth than expected in July and a rising unemployment rate. Furthermore, some of the job growth numbers in previous months have been revised downward, meaning they were lower than the U.S. Labor Department initially reported.

Cruise stocks can continue their run as long as travel demand stays strong. However, any slowdowns can hurt cruise companies that carry significant debt. Cruise stock investors should carefully monitor travel demand to gauge the risk of their investments.

Investors seeking exposure to heightened travel demand may want to consider these seven top cruise stocks:

Carnival Corp. ( CCL )

Carnival's revenue and net income have continued to trend upward ever since the demand for travel returned. The company's second-quarter results revealed that sales increased by 17.7% year over year as total customer deposits reached a record $8.3 billion. That's more than $1.1 billion higher than the previous record.

Carnival also reported a record $560 million in operating income. That's nearly five times 2023 levels, and it accompanied a record $5.8 billion in second-quarter revenue.

The company raised its guidance for fiscal 2024, and its successes in 2024 should carry over into 2025, which can benefit long-term investors .

"We are very pleased with the continued acceleration of demand for 2025 and beyond, which builds upon the fantastic achievements in 2024 thus far," CEO Josh Weinstein said in Carnival's second-quarter earnings news release.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. ( RCL )

Royal Caribbean Cruises has returned to profitability with net profit margins above 20%. The cruise holding company raised full-year guidance after reporting solid results in the second quarter. Net income came in at $854 million compared to $459 million in the same quarter last year. That's an 86% year-over-year increase.

The total customer deposit balance reached $6.2 billion at the end of the second quarter. Furthermore, Royal Caribbean Cruises recently reinstated its dividend. Investors will receive a quarterly dividend of 40 cents per share. Heightened adjusted EPS guidance of $11.35 to $11.45 per share suggests a 68% year-over-year improvement.

Commentary from company President and CEO Jason Liberty suggests that business is booming.

"We have seen strength for all key products and are already taking more bookings for 2025 sailings than 2024," he states.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. ( NCLH )

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings is yet another cruise operator raising its guidance, projecting full-year adjusted EBITDA of $2.35 billion, up from $2.3 billion. Norwegian also raised its full-year adjusted net income guidance from $730 million to $790 million, marking a $60 million increase.

The cruise company reported second-quarter revenue of $2.4 billion, which was 8% higher than the same quarter last year. GAAP net income came in at $163.4 million, which was a 90% year-over-year improvement.

Norwegian is on pace to achieve a double-digit adjusted return on invested capital by the end of the year. Adjusted EPS is expected to grow by approximately 120% compared to 2023.

Mark A. Kempa, executive vice president and chief financial officer, mentioned that the company has strong momentum and sees "robust demand" as it enters the second half of 2024.

Lindblad Expeditions Holdings Inc. ( LIND )

Lindblad Expeditions is a smaller cruise stock with a $425 million market capitalization. The company reported 7% year-over-year sales growth in the first quarter. Demand continues to grow, as bookings for 2024 are 4% ahead of bookings for 2023. Available guest nights increased by 3% year over year, allowing Lindblad to accommodate more visitors.

The company's cash position increased from $187.3 million on Dec. 31 to $224.2 million as of March 31. That's a 19.7% increase. Lindblad is also in the middle of a stock buyback program. As of April 29, the company had used $23 million of the $35 million it authorized for share repurchases.

Agilysys Inc. ( AGYS )

Agilysys provides software for the hospitality industry, giving it some exposure to cruise lines. The company serves various sectors, such as hotels, resorts, stadiums and higher education.

Shares are off to a good start year to date, rising about 20% as of Aug. 5, and have more than quadrupled over the past five years.

The company delivered 13.3% year-over-year revenue growth in the first quarter of fiscal 2025. That marks its 10th consecutive record-revenue quarter. Subscription revenue, which now makes up more than half of total recurring revenue, increased by 32% year over year. As subscription revenue consists of a larger portion of the total business, Agilysys' revenue growth should accelerate. Net income attributable to shareholders soared from $1.1 million to $14.1 million year over year.

Agilysys anticipates generating $275 million to $280 million in revenue throughout fiscal 2025. Adjustable EBITDA is expected to be 16% of revenue.

OneSpaWorld Holdings Ltd. ( OSW )

OneSpaWorld Holdings provides spas, wellness and treatments on cruises and on land. Shares are up by 7.2% year to date and come with a dividend yield just above 1%. Revenue increased by 12% year over year in the second quarter, prompting the company to raise its fiscal year guidance.

The company operates health and wellness centers on 197 ships, compared to 183 ships in the same quarter last year. Net income reached $15.8 million, compared to a $3.2 million net loss in Q2 2023. OneSpaWorld Holdings anticipates 2024 revenue will range from $870 million to $890 million. The midpoint implies 10.8% year-over-year revenue growth compared to the $794 million generated in 2023.

"We remain confident in our ability to deliver strong operating and financial performance, both near term and long term, and increase value to our shareholders," CEO Leonard Fluxman said in OneSpaWorld's second-quarter earnings release.

World Kinect Corp. ( WKC )

World Kinect Corp., formerly known as World Fuel Services Corp., is an energy, commodities and services company. It has delivered over 18 billion gallons of fuel to more than 150,000 customers, including cruise lines. World Kinect's revenue was flat in the second quarter, but shares are up by 15% year to date. Diluted earnings per share soared by 277% year over year to reach $1.81.

Chairman and CEO Michael Kasbar noted that the company is facing short-term headwinds in its Land segment, but its Aviation business continues to soar. Gross profits for the aviation segment are up by 3% year over year and make up almost half of the the company's total gross profits. CFO Ira Birns said in the company's earnings release that World Kinect is focused on expense control and working capital management.

Should You Get On Board With Cruise Stocks?

Many cruise stocks have delivered rising revenue and profit margins and have raised their guidance for the rest of the year. Significant travel growth has helped cruise lines hit revenue records and achieve profitability.

However, cruise stocks have their risks. An economic slowdown can hamper their business model and make it more difficult to achieve double-digit year-over-year revenue growth.

Investors should also monitor how cruise lines cover their long-term debt and track whether the demand for travel remains elevated.
