Golden Circle and Secret Lagoon Tour

GOLDEN CIRCLE AND A HOT SPRING TREASURE This tour combines stunning, must-do sightseeing with a heavenly bath in a geothermal hot spring - set in a gorgeous location! You will not only explore the iconic Golden Circle but afterward also unwind as you soak in Secret Lagoon.

During our first stop, we retrace the footsteps of ancient Vikings by visiting the Þingvellir National Park . In 930 AD the country's first national assembly was established there by Iceland's early settlers. Þingvellir is also where the American and Eurasian continental plates are dramatically pulling apart at an annual rate of 2 cm. It’s also where the country's largest natural lake is to be found, Þingvallavatn.

From there we move on to see the world-famous Geysir – where the ground trembles and steaming hot water spouts spectacularly skywards from the famous Strokkur Geyser every few minutes.

From there we visit the dramatic Gullfoss Waterfall , a breathtaking sight to behold. Here a powerful glacial river cascades down 32 meters on two levels into a deep narrow canyon with a thunderous roar.

The last stop on our tour, and the most relaxing, is the Secret Lagoon . Whatever the weather it's the perfect spot for relaxing in between sightseeing and enjoying Icelandic nature at its very best. Indeed, the geothermal hot water is a hidden treat that Icelanders have been enjoying for generations! Around the Secret Lagoon, you find several hot spots. A path has been built so you can have a closer look at the bubbling hot springs and a little Geysir even erupts every 5 minutes, showing off for the guests bathing in the hot spring.

All in all – it’s the perfect combination of activities and relaxation

  • Þingvellir:  the rift valley and the site of the oldest modern parliament.
  • Geysir:  hot spring & geothermal area and home to Strokkur, the erupting geyser.
  • Gullfoss Waterfall:  the powerful glacial waterfall known as the 'Golden Waterfall' in English.
  • The Secret Lagoon :  A natural hot spring pool surrounded by steam and a geyser.

Reykjavik Terminal

Tours depart from the Reykjavik Terminal located at Skógarhlíð 10. Please be sure to arrive 15 minutes prior to departure along with a printed or digital copy of your ticket/voucher.

If you have booked a hotel pickup with SmartBus™, please be at your chosen pickup location 30 minutes before the departure of the tour. Look for the Green SmartBus™ which will be outside your accommodation within 30 minutes of pickup.

Þingvellir National Park

Located on the northern shores of Þingvallavatn (Iceland's largest lake), Þingvellir (anglicized as 'Thingvellir') is the national pride of Iceland and our first National Park. It is, for one, a key location in Icelandic history as the oldest existing parliament in the world was first assembled there in 930 AD. For this reason, Þingvellir has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is, therefore, a protected national park due to its unique geology and natural features. From the viewing area, the Almannagjá canyon between two tectonic plates can be seen, a visual representation of continental drift.

As the first stop along the tour, you will have an opportunity to walk through the park and use the restroom if needed.

Geysir Geothermal Springs

A favorite stop along the Golden Circle is the highly active Geysir Hot Spring Area with boiling mud pits and the lively Strokkur which spouts water 30 meters (100 ft) into the air every few minutes. The area became active more than 1000 years ago and comprises more than a dozen hot spring holes. Although one can only see steam emerging from the surface of Geysir these days, its name was adopted to represent spouting hot springs all over the world.

Along the tour, the newly opened Geysir Center offers guests and travelers a chance to use the restroom and to catch some refreshments as well as lunch.

Gullfoss Waterfall

As one of the most popular attractions in all of Iceland, Gullfoss is a waterfall located in the canyon of Hvítá river in the southwest of the country. The beautiful Hvítá river rushes southward in three steps into a narrow canyon with a breathtaking roar and grandeur. Furthermore, on clear days the magnificent Langjökull glacier, Iceland's second largest glacier, can be seen in the distance.

Guests and Travelers may use the restroom and purchase food and refreshments at this location as well.

The Secret Lagoon

The perfect way to round off the golden circle tour. You will have the chance to relax in the natural hot spring pool next to a spouting geyser that erupts every 5 minutes. The water stays at a warm 38-40 Celsius (100-104 Fahrenheit) and is sure not to disappoint, regardless of the weather conditions.

There are both showers and lockers here. If you need to rent a swimming suit or towel you may do so as well.

Golden Circle and Secret Lagoon

Golden Circle and Secret Lagoon Full Day Tour

golden circle and secret lagoon tour

Gear up for a day of chasing waterfalls, marveling at geysers, and soaking in the oldest poo l. In 2024, it was recognized by Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Award on Tripadvisor.

Explore Iceland's famous natural landmarks , starting at Þingvellir National Park. In this UNESCO World Heritage site, you can walk between two continents! Then, marvel at Gullfoss, a waterfall considered one of the most beautiful worldwide. Later, watch the natural wonder of Geysir, the original geyser, and its active counterpart Strokkur, which erupts sky-high at regular intervals.

Conclude your adventure with a relaxing soak in the Secret Lagoon, Iceland's oldest geothermal pool, with an erupting geyser nearby.

  • Golden Circle
  • Þingvellir National Park
  • Gullfoss Waterfall
  • Geysir Hot Springs
  • Secret Lagoon

We’ll pick you up at your hotel, guesthouse, or one of the bus stops in downtown Reykjavík in the morning. The pickup is between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m., but you must be ready at 8 o'clock. After the pick-up, we head out of town, and the guide introduces himself/herself.

THINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK

The day's first stop i s the Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park , a historical site and center of Icelandic natural beauty. It’s where Vikings founded the first parliament in the world. Today, it has a special place in the hearts of Icelanders and nature lovers as a geological marvel. Þingvellir was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004.

This is the closest you can get to being on two continents at the same time. Under the national park, the Eurasian plate and the American plate are separated by 2 cm (0.8 inches) each year. There are restrooms and coffee shops for visitors in the area .

GULLFOSS WATERFALL

The wonderful Gullfoss is the next stop on our journey . One of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland, it has a beautiful story that your guide will tell you during the tour.

When Canadians and Americans come here , they call Gullfoss "the mini-version of Niagara Falls." We don't know if we agree with that, though. If you ask us, it's even prettier. The waterfall is close to the second biggest glacier in Iceland, Langjökull, and you will see the fresh glacier water falling 104 feet (32 meters) into the canyon.

Gullfoss is beautiful from all angles. From above, it looks perfect with the Icelandic nature around it. In the summertime, it is possible to walk all the way down to Gullfoss, feel its power, and spray water in the air.

GEYSIR HOT SPRINGS

Geysir is undoubtedly the most famous hot spring in the world. It's so famous that people from other countries talk about "Geysers" when discussing erupting hot springs. It is lo cated only an 8-minute drive from Gullfoss and is our third big attraction of the day.

Geysir's "go lden age" was at the beginning of the last century when it erupted up to 262 feet (80 meters) every half an hour. It stopped erupting in the fall of 2000. The only active erupting hot spring in the area is "the son of Geysir," called Strokkur. It erupts every 3 to 8 minutes and goes as high as 114 feet (35 meters) .

There are restaurants in the Geysir area where you can have burgers, salads, traditional Icelandic meat soup (our favorite), and much more. If you want to bring your own lunch, we let our customers eat on the bus, especially if the weather is bad.

SECRET LAGOON POOL

The day's last stop is the Secret Lagoon, known in Iceland as the "Old Pool." Founded in 1891, it is the oldest geothermal pool on the island and has been enjoyed by locals for more than a century.

Luckily, it’s not as secret today. In Iceland, we do have more than 100 geothermal pools all over the country and it is a big part of the Icelandic culture to go there to relax. Nothing is more calming after a day out in Icelandic nature than ending the day in a geothermal pool. What sets Secret Lagoon apart from others is the atmosphere. It’s surrounded by mossy lava fields. There is a little hot spring there, which erupts every 4 - 6 minutes. If you feel too hot, it is nice to stand up and walk around the area on the walking paths around the pool.

The water stays at a comfortable temperature of 100.4° - 104°F (38° - 40°C). Before you enter the pool, the staff will go over the rules and what to keep in mind for your visit. Remember to bring towels and swimsuits with you, but they can be rented at extra cost at the lagoon. We will spend about 90 minutes at the pool.

Tour Itinerary

Combining the Golden Circle and Secret Lagoon , this breathtaking tour takes you on a wondrous journey through Iceland’s staggeringly raw beauty. It ends with the ultimate Icelandic indulgence: a luxurious soak in a geothermal pool under the open sky. Go on a journey that brings you the experiences of walking among geologic marvels, witnessing an erupting hot spring, discovering a magnificent waterfall, and unwinding in an outdoor geothermal pool.

A Historical & Geological Wonder

Þingvellir National Park is located in a rift valley where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet. It is a site of great historical, geological and cultural significance and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Þingvellir is the birthplace of the Althing Iceland’s parliament founded in 930 AD, where the nation’s most powerful leaders would meet to decide on legislation and carry out brutal Viking age justice.

An Awe-Inspiring Waterfall

The tour continues across an area of picturesque scenery to the mighty Gullfoss waterfall. Once there, you can take several paths around the two tiers of cascading water to explore several vantage points. Extra time is allotted at this location for a lunch break at Gullfoss Café, where food is available for purchase.

Bubbling with Excitement

Next up is the home of “ The Great Geysir ” hot spring, which all geysers are named after. This area is an impressive collage of bubbling mud pools, hissing steam vents, and colorful algae deposits. Strokkur geyser puts on quite the show every few minutes blasting boiling water high up into the air.

The Secret Lagoon

Just off the Golden Circle is the Secret Lagoon , a spring-fed pool located near the charming village of Flúðir in South Iceland. Mineral-rich geothermal waters from nearby hot springs stay at a steady temperature of 38° to 40°C, making the Secret Lagoon’s water perfect for bathing, relaxation and enjoying your time.

Icelandic Open-Air Bathing Experience

The Secret Lagoon was made in 1891 and it is the oldest pool in Iceland. Over the years, the Secret Lagoon, or Gamla Laugin as it was referred to by the villagers, has been part of the local culture that is keeping alive the uniquely authentic experience of Icelandic open-air geothermal bathing. Even Secret Lagoon fell into oblivion after 1947 when the new pool was opened in Flúðir, it had been renovated and today you can visit this amazing place daily. You can also visit Canyon baths

Hot Springs & Geothermal Features

The Secret Lagoon offers neat and clean locker rooms, showers, and changing facilities, as well as a small bar and dining area. Boardwalks and footpaths surround the pool enable guests to explore the small hot springs and other geothermal features in the immediate area. After 2 hours of enjoying the Secret Lagoon’s miraculous waters, we return to Reykjavík, rejuvenated and refreshed.

An Experience for the Mind, Body & Soul

While anyone of these stops makes incredible images for your Instagram feed, they also all have rich histories and fascinating tales, each told with their nuances by our knowledgeable guides. Touring the Golden Circle and soaking in the Secret Lagoon is an unforgettable way to experience Iceland’s natural wonders for your body, mind, and soul.

Kerið is a 6500-years old, varicolored volcanic crater on the Golden Circle Route. Many visitors go there to admire its perfect conical shape with a beautiful appearance, decorated with maroon volcanic rock and black sediment stripes. The blue lake at the bottom of the crater is the center of attention.

Paved walking paths are available for close exploration, as you can either walk around the rim of the crater for a panoramic view and its sense of vicinity, or you can follow the path to the bottom of the crater for a nice walk around the crater lake. Its perfect conical shape is due to a collapse of the magma chamber onto itself after the lava depleted during its  eruption.

Bathing at the Secret Lagoon

As the oldest geothermal swimming pool in Iceland, the Secret Lagoon has been a local hot-spot since its establishment in 1891. Located on the Golden Circle of Iceland region, the Gamla Laugin , which translates into the ‘ old pool ,’ is a favorable place to enjoy some relaxing time.

Now a  popular tourist attraction, the pool has been renovated to welcome more visitors, with steam vents contrasting against the fascinating panoramic landscape views nearby. You can take your time relaxing in the warm water and serene ambiance before we hop on our bus, for our next destination.

Strokkur geyser erupting

It’s safe to say that Iceland is powered by geothermal energy, and the Geysir Geothermal Field is the best example to demonstrate that! As you step on the walking path, your senses come alive as you are immediately greeted by the sulfuric smell, and bubbling mud pools in a land of mysterious steam vents, and dynamic, gushing hot springs.

The star of the show is the  Strokkur Geyser  which erupts every 5 to 10 minutes, reaching up to 20 meters in the sky. The nearby  Great Geysir  used to be active, until its underground conduit was blocked. Now it is a peaceful depth of blue water, with a unique, serene beauty in contrast to the dynamic Strokkur. The English word, geyser, is coined because of the Great Geysir.

You can also find a visitor center close by with nice lunch options and a great selection of souvenirs.

After a 5-minute drive, we will reach Iceland’s most famous waterfall, aka Gullfoss, the Golden Falls. The astonishing waterfall’s wide cascade drops in two stages, the first 11 meters (36 ft) then 21 meters (69 ft), roaring and tumbling down to the canyon, splashing up a massive screen of mist. Power from the waterfall can be felt even from a distance.

There are walking paths in the upper and lower level, allowing visitors to admire the waterfall from different levels and angles. Gollfoss’s voluminous water is from  Hvítá , the White River, which originates from Iceland’s second-largest glacier,  Langjökull .

Thingvellir is famed for its unique landscape and geology

Thingvellir is a unique location, home to multiple highlights of Iceland,  significant in both Iceland’s culture and geology. Alþing, Iceland’s parliament, was established by the Vikings here in 930 AD, and is also the world’s first parliament.

In 2004, Thingvellir was listed on the  UNESCO World Heritage Site , as it holds the unique ability to allow people to walk through a rift valley that sits on the divergent edge between the  Eurasian  and  North American tectonic plates . The splitting part is the  Mid-Atlantic Ridge , and its only visible section is found in Iceland, with the rest submerged in the ocean.  Öxaráfoss waterfall  cuts through the walking path with its beautiful drop streaming down the deck.

Almannagjá  is the largest fissure in Thingvellir National Park, which will guide you through the path of the Vikings, to the parliament site, and then reach the panoramic  viewpoint of Hakið . In winter after darkness drops, if you are lucky you can see the Northern Lights dancing over the national park, a unique natural live show!

After the tour is complete, you will be dropped back to the place you were picked up from in the morning.

Tour Description

On the Golden Circle & Secret Lagoon Tour, you will experience a series of remarkable and diverse sites in the Southwest of Iceland.

Start the day with a leisurely swim in the Secret Lagoon, one of the oldest natural geothermal pools in Iceland, nestled amongst bubbling hot springs and a small erupting geyser. Steam rises from the surrounding geothermal area as you relax in the warm mineral-rich water, which holds at 38-40*C year-round.

Then we embark upon the quintessential Icelandic tour to the Geysir geothermal area in the Haukadalur valley, where the Strokkur fountain geyser spouts water high into the air every few minutes, before visiting the majestic “Golden Waterfall” of Gullfoss, considered by many to be Iceland’s most beautiful waterfall.

Then onward to the historic geological wonder Þingvellir National Park, which is not only the seat of the world’s oldest still-functioning parliament (where the Icelandic Alþingi first convened in 930 AD) but is considered the best place on earth to view the geologic meeting point of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, pulling apart year by year.

Join us for a day that balances relaxation with exploration.

Golden Circle, Secret Lagoon and Northern Lights tour

Golden Circle tour with a Secret Lagoon spa and Northern Lights experience includes three great experiences in one long but full of adventure day.

After the pick-up in the Reykjavik area, we will start with the morning departure to explore the famous Golden Circle route, where you will get to see geological wonders and bathe in the hot spring of the Secret Lagoon located in Flúðir village. After the first phase of the day, you will return to the city to rest for a bit before your evening hunt for the elusive Northern Lights. Three great experiences in one long but full of adventure day.

Our combo tour is a wonderful opportunity to maximize the use of your time to enjoy three very different things in one day.

The Golden Circle

The Golden Circle is the name given to a route comprising three main attractions;  Thingvellir National Park , an area of historical, cultural, and geological importance to the hearts of all Icelanders; Gullfoss waterfall , a majestic and powerful waterfall powered by a glacial river; and  Geysir Geothermal Area , where you can witness the frequent and awe-inspiring eruptions of geothermal steam and water.

Gullfoss in winter

In addition to these classic stops, we will also take you to the 6500-year-old volcanic crater of Kerið. And perhaps the highlight of the day is the warm and soothing waters of the Secret Lagoon in the village of Flúðir.

The Secret Lagoon

One of the surprising things one might not know about Iceland is its long love affair with outdoor bathing. A respite from the often cold and challenging climate, one of the most popular places to bathe in warm, geothermal waters is the Secret Lagoon located in the village of Flúðir. The village is situated along the Golden Circle route and is, therefore, the perfect addition to this famous tour. By locals, it is more known as Gamla Laugin which means “the old one”. The spa dates back to the late 19th century.

Hot-spring bathing at the Secret Lagoon

After your Golden Circle & Secret Lagoon tour, you will be dropped back to the city for a few hour’s break, during which you can get refreshments and enjoy dinner at your leisure.

Northern Lights Bus Tour

A phenomenon that attracts winter visitors to Iceland and no wonder. Our Northern Lights bus tour from Reykjavík takes you to where the action happens. We study closely cloud coverage forecasts as well as the KP-index which measures the strength of atmospheric aurora activity. We only go on tour when we believe there is a good chance of catching the dancing green, blue, or even purple belts of the aurora borealis in the sky.

Tour Itinerary

Combining the Golden Circle and Secret Lagoon, this breathtaking tour takes you on a wondrous journey through Iceland’s staggeringly raw beauty. A Historical & Geological Wonder Þingvellir National Park is located in a rift valley where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet. It is a site of great historical, geological, and cultural significance and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Þingvellir is the birthplace of the Althing Iceland’s parliament founded in 930 AD, where the nation’s most powerful leaders would meet to decide on legislation and carry out brutal Viking age justice.  An Awe-Inspiring Waterfall The tour continues across an area of picturesque scenery to the mighty Gullfoss waterfall. Once there, you can take several paths around the two tiers of cascading water to explore several vantage points. Extra time is allotted at this location for a lunch break at Gullfoss Café, where food is available for purchase. Bubbling with Excitement Next up is the home of “The Great Geysir” hot spring, which all geysers are named after. This area is an impressive collage of bubbling mud pools, hissing steam vents, and colorful algae deposits. Strokkur geyser puts on quite the show every few minutes blasting boiling water high up into the air. The Secret Lagoon Just off the Golden Circle is the Secret Lagoon, a spring-fed pool located near the charming village of Flúðir in South Iceland. Mineral-rich geothermal waters from nearby hot springs stay at a steady temperature of 38° to 40°C, making the Secret Lagoon’s water perfect for bathing, relaxing, and enjoying your time. Icelandic Open-Air Bathing Experience The Secret Lagoon was made in 1891 and it is the oldest pool in Iceland. Hot Springs & Geothermal Features The Secret Lagoon offers neat and clean locker rooms, showers, and changing facilities, as well as a small bar and dining area. Boardwalks and footpaths surround the pool enable guests to explore the small hot springs and other geothermal features in the immediate area. After 2 hours of enjoying the Secret Lagoon’s miraculous waters, we return to Reykjavík, rejuvenated and refreshed.  An Experience for the Mind, Body & Soul While anyone of these stops makes incredible images for your Instagram feed, they also all have rich histories and fascinating tales, each told with their nuances by our knowledgeable guides. Touring the Golden Circle and soaking in the Secret Lagoon is an unforgettable way to experience Iceland’s natural wonders for your body, mind, and soul.

WHY I THINK YOU WILL LOVE THIS TOUR! 🧡

Seeing the majestic highlights of the Golden Circle is a MUST for everyone and anyone visiting Iceland! But most Golden Circle tours head straight back to Reykjavik after the full day of seeing powerful waterfalls, national parks and erupting geysers.

This awesome tour however, has one more amazing stop. A super special visit to the Secret Lagoon Natural Hot Spring. I can't think of a better way to end a long day of sightseeing and exploring than relaxing in a warm and cosy Icelandic natural hot spring!

Triplogo

Wow, we would recommend this trip to anyone visiting Iceland! Our guide, Maria was 5* - her friendliness and knowledge were second to none. Our driver was great too! Each destination was breathtaking. We are so lucky to have experienced this trip on such a beautiful day; yet, as you will expect, still extremely cold - so layer up! Don’t miss out on seeing these beautiful examples of nature on an all round brilliant trip!

Wake Up Reykjavik Tour Review by Rosetteangel

What a wonderful tour. Our day began at the tectonic plates followed by the geysers. Then we had a quick cheeky meet and greet with some beautiful friendly Icelandic horses. After that we saw the beautiful waterfalls and then our day ended at the secret lagoon. The lagoon was incredible. So warm and relaxing. Our guides were absolutely incredible. Friendly, so informative and really kind always taking photos for us and checking we were happy. This has been the best day in Iceland so far!

Wake Up Reykjavik Tour Review by ginika_0

Just had the chance to write review but couldn't miss the chance. Booked this for the one full day we had in Iceland with my sister. Our guide picked us up from the pickup location on time. She is quite a warm and friendly guide and showed such knowledge and pride of her country. She also has a way of circumventing the tourist crowds. For instance, she arranged for us to grab lunch on a nice family run farm just for us so we had enough time to see the highlights!! The tour itself took us through the beautiful sights of the golden circle and the secret lagoon, with useful tips on getting the best of the experience. Highly recommended...

What is Golden Circle Iceland?

golden circle and secret lagoon tour

Golden Circle of Iceland - the famous route you can drive in one day.

The Golden Circle in Iceland is a famous circular sightseeing route in the country's south. The loop begins and ends in the capital, Reykjavík.

The name of this ring-shaped scenic path co mes from Gullfoss , which means Golden Falls in Icelandic. It is one of the most stunning waterfalls you'll see along the way.

The classic Circle extends over 142 mi (230 km), and all the main attractions of the Golden Ring are easily accessible by road. This makes the Golden Circle day trip easy to drive, allowing you to visit all three main attractions:

  • Thingvellir National Park
  • Geysir Geothermal Area
  • Gullfoss Waterfall

Golden Circle One Day Itinerary

The Golden Circle is ideal for group tours, family trips, and even excursions with children. It also makes for an excellent self-drive day tour from Reykjavik. With your own four wheels, you can travel at your own pace, take additional detours, and find little-known spots.

THINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK - STOP 1

golden circle and secret lagoon tour

Thingvellir National Park. Source: Arctic Adventures.

This is one of the first attractions of the Golden Circle drive if you are going in a clockwise direction. This is where the landscape starts to reveal its rich historical and geological background.

The National Park of þingvellir is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . This was also the site of Iceland’s ancient parliament, where crucial decisions were made for centuries. The most fascinating thing you’ll get to explore here is the site where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. It’s something you can’t miss out on from your itinerary!

Top Things to Do in Thingvellir:

  • Go on an Almannagjá gorge hike and walk between the two continents.
  • Watch the thundering waters of Öxarárfoss waterfall .
  • Snorkel and dive in the clear waters of the Icelandic rift - Silfra .
  • Experience the power of the Hvítá River when river rafting .

Visitor Tips

» Time you need: 2-3 hours for sightseeing in the park

» Parking: On-site. The parking fee applies

» Entrance fee: No charge for entry

» Distance: 42 min. drive from Reykjavik to Thingvellir National Park

GOOD TO KNOW

The park has picnic areas, making it a great spot to bring some snacks and take in the views. For parking, you can conveniently buy a ticket online in advance or pay on-site with cash or card. While exploring, keep an eye out for arctic foxes and minks that roam the area. If you need a break, stop by the cozy café at the Thingvellir information center for tea, coffee, and sandwiches. Bathrooms are available near the Visitor Centre by P1 for a small fee.

GEYSIR GEOTHERMAL AREA - STOP 2

golden circle and secret lagoon tour

Eruption of Strokkur geyser.

After exploring Thingvellir Park, your next stop on the itinerary will be the Geysir Geothermal Area , also known as the Haukadalur Geothermal Field .

From bubbling mud pots to water-shooting hot springs, this incredible site, located only half an hour from the National Park, is a true manifestation of Earth’s underground power!

The area is home to two of the world's most famous geysers, Strokkur and Geysir . They are the reason why this geothermal field is a must-visit on your driving tour.

Interestingly, the Great Geysir is known as the father of geysers. Its name inspired the English word “geyser,” meaning “to gush.” Though Geysir is now dormant, Strokkur, its lively brother, is the star of the show. Get ready to be amazed as it blasts water up to 130 feet (40 meters) into the air every 4-10 minutes! The anticipation builds as you watch the ground bubble and steam rise, and then—whoosh!—a powerful column of boiling water erupts, making the crowd gasp and cheer.

» Time you need: 1 hour

» Parking: Free

» Distance: 35 min. drive from Thingvellir to Geysir Geothermal area

For your safety, always walk on the designated pathways and avoid crossing rope barriers. In winter, since it gets dark quickly, be sure to arrive before sunset if you want to see Strokkur’s eruptions clearly. Additionally, there is a gas station conveniently located right next to the geothermal area.

Gullfoss Waterfall - stop 3

golden circle and secret lagoon tour

Gullfoss Waterfall. Source: Arctic Adventures.

These legendary Golden Falls is the last key point that must be covered to complete the Golden Circle self drive tour route.

Gullfoss Waterfall is located on the Hvítá River and offers two viewing platforms at lower and higher elevations. The first level of the falls is 36 feet (11 meters) high, and the second is 70 feet (21 meters).

The view that opens up after getting closer to the falls almost takes your breath away. A powerful, never-ending stream of glacial water travels forcefully through the vast canyon before vanishing into the pool below.

If you try to visit it on a sunny day, the water may turn a golden brown and a rainbow may appear over this picturesque, mighty giant.

» Time you need: Up to 1 hour

» Parking: Free parking lots on upper and lower platforms

» Distance: 10 min drive from Geysir Geothermal Area to Gullfoss

The intense drop of the waterfall creates a giant cloud of mist, so if you want to stay dry, wear water-resistant clothes and be cautious with non-waterproof phones or cameras. The path to the waterfall can be slippery, especially in winter when it's covered in ice, that’s why you should tread carefully. Some warning signs might be easy to miss, so keep an eye out for the ropes indicating where to go. You'll find restrooms, a café, and a souvenir shop in the upper parking lot.

Golden Circle Itinerary Map

Most travelers choose to start their Iceland Golden Circle one day itinerary from Reykjavik and travel in a clockwise direction. This route allows you to visit Thingvellir first , followed by the Geysir area , and finally, Gullfoss . Following this path, the stops are conveniently lined up for self drive according to the time (and energy) each requires.

There are no gas stations in the area of þingvellir, but you can find one in Laugarvatn - on the way to Geysir and Gullfoss. Another gas station is near the geothermal field. On the way back from Gullfoss to Reykjavík, there's a station near the Secret Lagoon and several in Hveragerði.

Remember, the maximum speed you can drive on Icelandic highways is 56 mph (90 km/h).
