"The Langtang region trekking is one of Nepal's most well-liked trekking regions. Among them, Gosainkunda Trek via Dhunche is the most popular one because of the scenic lake and mountain views. In good weather, you can connect the Langtang and Helambu treks through the trek to the holiest, scenic, and high-altitude Gosainkunda Lake.   It can also be possible to hike the trail as an individual trek or even as a return visit to Dhunche to the Lakes (8 days). However, the chance of ascending in these two cases can cause acclimatization trouble unless you have done other treks higher than 4000m. Plenty of lodges and guest houses are available en route, so finding shelter is not a problem. The Gosainkunda Trek via Dhunche can also be done by turning off the Langtang trek from Thulo Syabru. And it is an outstanding selection as a return route to Kathmandu from the Langtang trek. Tea houses in Thulo Syabru, Sing Gompa, and Tharepati are good, but Phedi and Ghopte have pretty basic. The major attraction during the tour is Gosaikunda Lake (4380m). Gosaikunda is the place for a Hindu pilgrimage every August, when hundreds of Sadhu trek to this holiest lake; however, this is the monsoon season, so it is not so suitable for trekking.

Gosainkunda Trek via Dhunche offers excellent panoramic views of the snow-capped peaks, including Annapurnas, Manaslu (8156m), the four peaks of the Ganesh Himal, and Langtang Lirung.

Our priority is always to provide clean and safe rooms for our guests.

Nepal Visa: If you are planning a trip to Nepal, you must have a valid passport and Nepal Visa. Depending on your country of origin, you may need to obtain a Nepal Tourist Visa before your arrival. To be eligible, your passport should be valid for a minimum of six months from your Tour Start Date. If you are planning on traveling to multiple countries on your trip, make sure to get a multi-entries Nepal Visa.

Once you arrive at Paro Airport, your passport will be stamped with the original visa.

Tibet Group Visa (TGV): All travelers from any nation intending to go to Tibet from Nepal must obtain a Tibet Group Visa (TGV) in Kathmandu with the help of a tour operator. BEST TIME TO VISIT

Nepal & Bhutan: Visiting Nepal and Bhutan at the same time is ideal as they share a similar climate. From high mountains to low land sub-tropical plains and jungles, the two countries have similar weather. The best time to visit is from March to April (spring) and October to December (autumn and early winter). During these months, the air is clean and fresh with sunny skies. January and February are colder months, while June, July, and August (summer) are typically monsoon seasons.

Tibet: It is best to visit Tibet between April and October when the weather is warm and the skies are clear. However, from November to March, it is still possible to explore certain areas like Namtso, Everest Base Camp, and Mount Kailash, as long as the roads are not blocked by snow. Temperatures during this time may be quite cold.

A unique experience throughout the walk is also provided by the monastery and yak cheese factory.

One of Nepal's shortest and most beautiful hikes in the Langtang area is Gosaikunda Trek . The River Trisuli originates in Gosainkunda Lake, which is located at a height of 4380 meters at the summit of the Himalayas. For Nepali worshippers, Gosainkunda Lake is highly popular for religious belief. Nepali people travel every year on the occasion of Janai Purnima to bathe in the sacred water of Gosainkunda to find salvation. Gosainkunda Lake Trekking Offers spectacular scenery of the Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, and Langtang Himalayan ranges. Numerous lakes, including Bhairav Kunda, Surya Kunda, Saraswati Kunda, Ragat Kunda, Nau Kunda, and Nag Kunda, may be seen while traveling to Gosaikunda. You will gain insight into how the residents of this area live as you follow ridges, traverse valleys and suspension bridges, and meander through rhododendron, oak, and pine woods. While traveling through Lantang National Park, if you are lucky, you could also see an endangered Red Panda.

After taking a bus from Kathmandu to Dhunche, your 7-Day Gosainkunda Trekking Itinerary will start. To get to Dhunche, you will travel via a number of picturesque towns, including Kakani, Ranipauwa, Bidur, Trishuli, Betrawati, and Ramche. From Kathmandu to Dhunche, it will take you around 6 hours. The next day, your Gosaikunda Lake Trek Itinerary will start from Dhunche and head toward Chandanbari, passing via Deurali and then Dimsa. The route is steep from Deurali till you reach Chandanbari. Best Season or Time for Gosaikunda Lake Trek

  • Spring (March, April, and May)

Spring is the 2nd optimal season for Gosaikunda Trek in Nepal. You can enjoy the blooms of the local flora in the Langtang National Park in the spring season. You get views of entire sections of forest covered in pink, red, and yellow blooms of rhododendron. You can enjoy your walk along the park with the scents of pine and maple. The wildlife of the region also comes alive after the winter slumber. If lucky, you can spot the endangered red panda on the trek. The weather conditions in spring are also quite stable. You can enjoy walks in cool, warm, and dry weather.

  • Autumn (September, October, and November)

Gosaikunda Lake Trekking in Nepal is especially popular in the autumn. Autumn is the best time of year for hikes due to the moderate temperatures and more consistent weather. You may also take advantage of the pleasant, dry weather at this time to enjoy your hikes in the Langtang region. The trails are in excellent shape as well. They are no longer slick and dirty. During this time of year, there will be fewer leeches and mosquito infestations. This time of year, the mountain peaks may be seen with astonishing clarity under the brilliant blue skies. Langtang Lirung, Ganesh, Himalchuli, and Dorje Lakpa are a few well-known ones to keep an eye out for. You may also take pleasure in the unobstructed views of the valleys, mountains, and peaks in the neighborhood.

Food and Meal Available during Gosaikunda Lake Trek

You may enjoy traditional Nepalese cuisine, which includes Dal Bhat along with many other typical local foods, while on the Gosaikunda Trek . On this voyage, you may also pick from a wide variety of European, Italian, Chinese, and Indian meals.

Tibetan Bread with jam, French toast with jam, muesli, oatmeal, corn flakes, cereal, hash browns, fried eggs, Gurung Bread, pancakes, puffy, and round, porridge, and chapatti with tea are some of the alternatives available for breakfast .

For lunch , you will be able to choose from a variety of delectable specialties, including momo (dumplings), vegetable fried rice with egg, dal bhat, soup (noodles, chicken, mushroom), cheese potatoes, and fried eggs noodles.

Dinner choices include stews, pizza, thukpa, fried noodles, noodle soup, macaroni, fried potatoes, fried rice, momo (dumplings), spring rolls, dal bhat, spaghetti, and more.

Accommodation Facilities on Gosaikunda Lake Trek

You can stay at modest tea houses along the Gosainkunda Trek Route . The most well-known method of trekking to Gosainkunda Lake is to just walk from one tea house to another. In rural communities, tea houses serve as modest hotels that provide both lodging and home-cooked meals. Usually, there are 2 hikers sharing a room. Lodges often feature cold water and western-style toilets, and bathrooms are communal. Additionally, a hot shower is provided, although it requires an additional fee. We will try our best to make arrangements for private accommodation, which may be available in some of the settlements along the trip for an additional fee. It's often hard to book individual rooms, though, because some of the settlements have a limited supply of housing during certain seasons of the year.

Gosaikunda Lake Trek Difficulty Level

It is easy to moderately challenge to complete the Gosaikunda Trek . Most of the time, the trails have a modest slant of rising and are quite easy to ascend, yet there are situations when they may become steeper and more difficult. Only as you reach Cholangpati, where there is minimal foliage and less oxygen in the air, make the walk feel a little challenging. The day at Gosaikunda Lake is the challenging part of this journey. The day starts with a two-hour trek that is difficult and in thin air. The last hour, when the route flattens out and hugs the mountainside, is the only time your legs and lungs sense comfort. However, you will need strong physical and mental endurance as the journey asks you to walk for an average of 5 to 7 hours every day. Since the walk takes you beyond 3000 meters above sea level, altitude sickness may be a factor. But if you climb gradually and properly acclimatize, the entire journey won't bother you. Nevertheless, if you succumb to it, be careful not to disregard the signs and go to a lower elevation where the air is sufficient.

Travel Insurance for Gosaikunda Lake Trek

The Langtang Gosainkunda Trek is held at a high altitude of 4380 meters, thus there is a minor risk of altitude sickness and other unforeseen events, including landslides. The trek to Gosaikund Lake is moderately challenging. This is neither as simple as the easy hikes nor as difficult as the challenging treks. You may somewhat modify the Gosaikunda trek's level of difficulty to suit your needs, much like you can do with other treks.

Q2. Is it feasible for someone who has never hiked before to go to Gosaikunda Lake?

Yes, this location will be great for your first moderately difficult treks if you have never gone hiking before.

In Kathmandu ATMs and credit card machines are available for usage. Above that, cash payments are required for a variety of services.

Q4. Is there electricity and Wi-Fi facilities on Gosaikunda Lake Trek?

All the teahouses where you will spend the night throughout the walk have power. Paying a nominal fee will allow you to recharge your phones, cameras, or iPads. We don't recommend bringing your laptop if you want to use the free Wi-Fi that is not available along the walking path. On an hourly basis, some teahouses do provide Wi-Fi but don't anticipate high-speed access on the far-off trails.

Q5. What are the chances of getting altitude sickness during Gosaikunda Trekking?

Altitude sickness is common in the area since this high-altitude walk surpasses 3000 meters of elevation. Acute Mountain Sickness develops as the oxygen level drops and the air pressure drops.

  • Avoid alcohol, cigarettes, and tobacco during the trek
  • Get prepared physically and mentally for the trek

Q7. What are the possibilities of drinking water on Gosainkunda trek route?

One option for getting water is to purchase mineral water bottles from stores located along the paths. Another way to purify tap or stream water before drinking is by bringing reusable water bottles and other types of water purification agents with you. The teahouses and the numerous streams and rivers along the path also offer the opportunity to replenish water bottles. We suggest drinking boiling water when you're at your lodge. Those who insist on exclusively drinking mineral water should be prepared to spend a little bit more money because the cost of bottled water increases as you move higher up.

Q8. What are the permits required for Langtang Gosainkunda trek?

Various types of permits that are required for trekking in this region are:

  • TIMS (Trekker's Information Management System)
  • Langtang National Park Permit

Q9. Where can I store the items that is not required during Godaikunda Trek?

The free storage is offered by the hotel in Kathmandu. Thus, you may leave all of your belongings that are not necessary for the walk at your hotel or in our office.

Q10. What happens if someone becomes ill while on the Godaikunda Trek and needs medical attention?

The assistant guide would accompany the sick trekker if he/she had to descend as a result of illness. It would not affect the experience of the rest of the group because the individual descending would be adequately taken care of. The guide will handle emergencies according to their complexity. A helicopter would be used for evacuation in a critical situation.

Difficulties in Gosaikunda Trek

Yeah we can all say that trekking is a great experience and if it comes to Gosaikunda we might have different experiences and difficulties we have faced. Some of the problems are mentioned below which are quite relevant to other trekking routes as well.

Altitude Sickness

The condition known as hypoxia occurs when there is a lack of oxygen in the environment. In other words, altitude sickness is the condition that develops when your body does not receive enough oxygen and your body reacts differently.

Altitude sickness is not a new word among trekkers and climbers. From an elevation, about 2500 meters above sea level, oxygen level starts to decrease along with the environment level. The main problem of altitude sickness arises due to maximum height gain within a short span of time making it difficult for people to trek and not gain the proper amount of oxygen.

Altitude sickness might not be so hazardous if dealt with in the correct way. But this can lead to an emergency situation if not treated properly.

The symptoms might vary from getting a cold, headache, dizziness, tiredness, loss of appetite, and a slight rise in heart rate leading to ultimate death. These conditions can be faced if certain things are kept in mind;

  • First and most importantly it is necessary to walk slowly if you observe symptoms.
  • Trekkers are required to carry garlic, ginger, and other medical objects
  • Drinking water and keeping the body hydrated is a must.
  • Avoid any kinds of alcohol drinking and smoking
  • Eating high calories and energy provides food.
  • Make sure to acclimatize and return to lower-level while sleeping.
  • If this can cure you then it's good but if the condition gets worse then you might take proper medical help.

So these are some of the primary tips to make sure to prevent you from altitude sickness. Do not panic and have patience. You can always take medical help if necessary.

Leech Problems

Since it is a holy place people specially visit it during the festival of Janai Purnima which falls during the rainy season in Nepal. Trekkers during the monsoon season might be difficult for some people, as it is without a doubt one of the most beautiful times of year in Nepal. You could encounter leeches while trekking, which can suck your blood and lead to potentially deadly consequences if you don't recognize them early on.

They attack from water sources and even from trees. So we might want to know what can be done to prevent them? Most of them use their fingers to remove the leech from your feet but you might want to know about being safe from them.

  • Use raw tobacco-soaked water on your shoes, socks, pants, and clothes.
  • Apply salt rather than pulling leech for less bleeding.
  • Tuck your clothes inside the pants to keep them from getting out of your clothes.
  • Keep walking and rest only in sunny and dry places.

Gosaikunda lake: Religious Merits and Beliefs

Gosaikunda is one of the venerated places of Nepal for both Hindu and Buddhist people. This lake carries many facts and beliefs you might not be aware of.

The sacred lake is oligotrophic and remains almost unspoiled, with a maximum depth of 4380 meters. This body of water has been given the name 'Samundra Manthan' or ocean churning in Hindu mythology. Lord Shiva is said to have pierced a glacier with his "Trishul" when he had digested the poison, creating the lake and making it the home of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Janai Purnima and Gangadashara are two Nepali festivals that attract a large number of visitors, especially from the Indian community. It is thought that bathing in the Gosaikunda during Janai Purnima washes our sins away. It is thought that the river Ganga has been sitting on the ground since Gangadashara.

Trekking to gosaikunda

According to mythology, bathing in the river, Ganga, or any other sacred lake and worshipping the goddess will help to get rid of sins. This day is called Dushera because of the destruction of ten sins. Ten sins fall under three main categories: physical, mental, and verbal which are destroyed by virtual deeds performed during the same day.

Even this lake holds equal importance for Buddhist people. According to local Tamang people, most Buddhist people visit the lake to pray for the departed souls of their loved ones for their betterment and wellbeing in the afterlife. On the precursory night of Janai Purnima, a parade of Jhankris marks their way towards the lake singing songs and chanting hymns throughout the way.

The cave is named in honour of Amar Singh Thapa, the Nepali commander of the western front during the Anglo-Nepal War, who went to Gosaikunda and breathed his last breath on his trip. A cave in the area is dedicated to him as an expression of gratitude for his service to our nation.

Best Time to visit Gosaikunda Lake

This magnificent and holy place is getting famous for its domestic trekking route. People might wonder when will be the best time to trek the magnificent lap of the Himalayan range.

So the four distinct seasons Winter, Summer, Autumn, and Spring mark the weather chart of Nepal. But the best time to visit is during spring and autumn for the trek. During this season you will be able to explore the panoramic vision of mountains and folklore.

In the month of April, you may see the alpine vegetation and local flora and fauna in abundance. A forest covered in pink and other hues, with pine and alpine aroma, can fascinate you.

The weather remains warm with temperatures ranging from 18 to 25 degrees celsius. The temperature is moderate for your walk. During the summer season, the average temperature ranges from 22 to 33-degree Celsius and since it is monsoon season there might be rainfall of 400 to 500mm per month.

trekking in nepal

Nature comes much more distinct during the summer season; the surroundings are filled with green and natural beauty. This might be a unique trekking experience getting a pleasant view of pasture land and mountains.

The Autumn season is also considered to be the best when it comes to trekking. In the window period between October and November, the average temperature is between 20 to 28 degrees celsius. This is a moderate temperature which will be an ideal season for a trek with stable weather conditions.

The clear blue skies offer a marvellous view of the Langtang mountain range along with other small hills and mountains. In the winter during December you might get to enjoy the snow but the trails get slippery so you might have a hard time trekking.

During the winter season, you will get the best vision of snow-capped mountains along with frozen lakes and snowfall. So be careful while you pack your bags and set for your journey towards Gosaikunda Lake.

These items might be of some use. But I highly recommend you pack light and efficiently. But if you can make space for these items then this will add some extra memories to your trekking trip. The following are marked as luxury items in your trekking journey.

  • Bluetooth speakers
  • Binoculars
  • Swim Suit
  • Playing Cards

Accessories

You will also make sure to make some space for the accessories essential for your trip. From sunscreen to sunglasses you might make a list and pack.

Toiletries

Sunscreen, towel, lip balm, moisturizer, toothbrush, toothpaste, and toilet paper are a must. Hand sanitizer and face masks are kind of mandatory nowadays.

Sanitary Waste

Make sure to carry your sanitary napkins back to the place where you can properly dispose of your waste. Carry a zip-locked bag to carry all of this wastage.

First Aid Box

Make sure to pack your first aid box for your safety. The box must be light and packed with essentials only.

From crocin, Digene, knee cap, and muscle relaxant anti-allergic medicine is mandatory. If you suffer from any digestion issues you might wanna carry ORS.

Do not worry about food cause you will get plenty of options. From tasting authentic food like Dal-Bhat (which is a mixture of white rice along with watery mild spiced lentils, potato curry accompanied with pickles ). This will be a pleasant experience to remember.

These are the materials that are needed for your trek. You might add some according to your comfort and safety. Make sure to research properly before packing the things. The other things like permit and accommodation will be taken care of by our team so feel free to contact us for making your trip much fun and easier.

Gosaikunda Trek Fitness Requirement

Gosaikunda trek is a moderate-difficulty trek. So even if you are a beginner you can easily prepare for this trek. But first, make sure your fitness level is according to the requirements of the trek. You might wonder how you should begin your fitness routine.

Let us help you make your journey a bit easier. First, get to know your body type and start your fitness journey by increasing your cardiovascular endurance.

Cardiovascular Endurance

Your trekking journey requires a lot of endurance and strength. You can mark your journey slowly and efficiently. First, start with brisk walking and jogging. Then increase the speed and ratio with a combination of distance and speeding treks.

The first target was 5 km in around 40 mins. Gradually increase your pace by increasing the rate of running and keeping the milestone of 5km within 27 mins. But if you are over 45 years old make sure to consult a physician before planning a trekking journey.

Gosaikunda Trek Route, Map & Itinerary

Nepal Itinerary , Trekking in Nepal / March 9, 2023 by fulltimeexplorer / 6 Comments

The Gosaikunda trek is a popular pilgrimage for locals as well as a popular trekking route for tourists. The area has a lot of importance in both Hinduism and Buddhism making it a wonderful cultural experience. Depending on the Gosaikunda trek route, this trek can take between 6 to 9 days including transportation to the start and end point. Here’s everything you need to know about the Gosaikunda trek route.

Gosaikunda Trek Map

Note: This map should not be used for navigational purposes. It is just meant to give an idea of the route and is not perfectly to scale. Download maps.me on your phone for an accurate offline map that is free to use.

Gosaikunda Trek Overview

Trek duration.

The Gosaikunda Trek route by itself takes at least 6 days to complete including the two days of driving to and from the starting point. However, this trek is often added on to other treks like the Langtang Valley Trek or the Helambu Trek . We combined it with Helambu which made it an 8 day trek, and we didn’t have to walk back the same direction we came. That being said, this overview will only cover the 6 day Gosaikunda Trek. There will be a separate blog post for Helambu

Gosaikunda Trek Difficulty Level

Very Difficult – I found this to be one of the most difficult treks we’ve ever done. Don’t let the lower altitude and short schedule fool you. The first day is a minimum of five hours going up a steep staircase. The second day has a major increase in altitude which can cause altitude sickness. Overall, this trek is more difficult than others.

Required Permits

A Langtang National Park permit is required. It can be purchased in advance in Kathmandu for 3,000 rupees (about $26 USD). Check times for the Nepal Tourism Board office as the Langtang desk closes before the other permit desks each day. You can also buy one on the way to Dhunche at the park entrance.

Kathmandu to Gosaikunda

To get from Kathmandu to Gosaikunda, you’ll need to take a vehicle (either a private vehicle or a bus) to Dhunche. From here, it’s a two to three day walk to Gosaikunda. If you are in a time crunch, you can hire a helicopter and visit the lake and return in one day.

Trek History

Although no teahouses or homes existed in Gosaikunda until 1985, the area has an ancient history. Depending on if someone is Buddhist or Hindu, the stories will differ.

Buddhist believe that the lake is famous because Guru Rinpoche (the founder of Tibetan Buddhism) meditated here around 600 years ago. Many followers come to walk in his path as a pilgrimage. It’s believed by some that meditating where Guru Rinpoche meditated enhances the experience and may lead them to enlightenment.

I tried to gather more information on Buddhist beliefs from the teahouse owners, but sadly they didn’t know any of the history. They did mention the Palace of the Goddess Remati or the Palace of Chakrasamvara, however, they couldn’t explain why the area was referred to as that, and I wasn’t able to find any further information explaining those names. If you know more, please leave a comment so I can update this to be more accurate.

The significance according to Hindus is clear. I’ll try to explain it in the simplest terms for those not familiar with Hindu mythology. It’s believed that demons tried to poison the world with a churning ocean. The only way to save heaven, hell, earth, and all of life was for Lord Shiva to drink the poison. After drinking it, he used his trident to create three lakes. He drank from Gosaikunda to quench his thirst. For this reason, the water is believed to have healing properties. Many come to collect the water to use in puja (religious ceremonies) while others swim in the water to heal their bodies.

Best Time to do the Gosaikunda Trek

The best time to trek anywhere in Nepal is October and November because the visibility and weather is the best. The second best time to trek is usually March and April but in the last few years the views have not been as good.

If you want a unique experience, you can go in August. August is much more dangerous because of the monsoon (so I don’t recommend it), however, it’s the Janai Purnima festival when thousands of pilgrims climb to Gosaikunda.

Gosaikunda Weather

Weather in the mountains changes frequently. There’s even a joke in Nepal that if you don’t like the weather in the mountains, wait five minutes. Weather conditions are best in October and November. Although it’s cold, it’s the safest time to visit with the best views.

Gosaikunda Altitude / Height

4,380 m (14,370 feet)

Gosaikunda Trail Info

The Gosaikunda trek route is typically a well laid staircase going uphill. In some areas, it’s a dirt path. Towards the end, the trek is not steep, but it does go consistently uphill with almost no downhill. On the way back, you’ll go completely downhill with a lot of time spent going down stairs. Overall, this trail is well maintained due to the many pilgrims who follow it.

Navigating the Gosaikunda Trek

Navigating this trek is extremely easy as the Gosaikunda trek route is a well traveled trail. I always recommend downloading maps.me before leaving. This is a free app with the trail that can be used offline (as long as you download the area map in advance). If you do get confused, you can easily navigate your way back to the trail using maps.me.

Packing List

I have a separate post for my packing list as it was too much to include here. Read this blog post for a list of everything I carried with me…

Gosaikunda Lake Trek Packing List

I’ve written an entire post breaking down what we spent on the trek. You can read it here…

Gosaikunda Trek Route Options

Gosaikunda trek 6 days.

This is the standard route; however, it is difficult with high altitude increases. Also, you skip sleeping in Laurebina which was the most beautiful village on the Gosaikunda trek route in my opinion. I was sad we didn’t stay there overnight.

Day 1 – Kathmandu to Dhunche by Jeep (5.5 hour drive)

Day 2 – Dhunche to Chandanbari (5 hour walk)

Day 3 – Chandanbari to Gosaikunda (4.5 hour walk)

Day 4 – Gosaikunda to Chandanbari (5 hour walk)

Day 5 – Chandanbari to Dhunche (6 hour walk)

Day 6 – Dhunche to Kathmandu (5.5 hour drive)

Gosaikunda Trek 7 Days

This itinerary adds a night in Laurebina which has the best views of the entire trek. It also gives you time to acclimate to the altitude. We were on a time crunch and couldn’t follow this itinerary, but I was jealous of those who spent a night in Laurebina.

Day 2 – Dhunche to Chandanbari (5 hours walk)

Day 3 – Chandanbari to Laurebina (2.5 hour walk)

Day 4 – Laurebina to Gosaikunda (3 hour walk)

Day 5 – Gosaikunda to Chandanbari (5 hour walk)

Day 6 – Chandanbari to Dhunche (6 hour walk)

Day 7 – Dhunche to Kathmandu (5.5 hour drive)

Langtang & Gosaikunda (11 day itinerary)

Gosaikunda & Helambu via Sermatang (8 day itinerary)

Gosaikunda & Helambu via Chisapani (8 day itinerary)

Detailed Gosaikunda Trek Itinerary Breakdown (6 days)

Day 1 – kathmandu to dhunche.

Kathmandu Altitude:    1,400 m (4,593 ft)

Dhunche Altitude:   1,960 m (6,430 ft)

Daily Altitude Increase:   560 m (1,840 ft)

Oxygen Concentration:  80% compared to 100% at sea level

Driving Time:   5.5 hours

Tea house:  Namaste Gosaikunda Hotel & Lodge

Daily Details:

There are two routes to get to Dhunche. We took the route via Tokha since we had hired a private jeep. Along the way, we got to see amazing views of Ganesh Himal and Langtang. We stopped for lunch at Kerung Highway Resort. We also stopped there when we did Langtang last year.

The road is bumpy in some sections with lots of cut back and hairpin turns. I highly recommend a jeep with four wheel drive as we’ve seen many buses and jeeps get stuck during our travels in Nepal. If you get motion sickness, you may want to take medicine in advance because of the sharp turns and speed.

Along the route, you need to go through several police checkpoints as the Tibetan border is nearby. Make sure to have a copy of your passport somewhere easy to reach. Do not put it in your luggage as you’ll need to show it at every stop. Drones are not allowed in the area. They will check your bags and will confiscate them.

342x342 Beach Chair

Day 2 – Dhunche to Chandanbari (Sing Gompa)

Chandanbari Altitude:    3,330 m (10,925 ft)

Daily Altitude Increase:   1,370 m (4,495 ft)

Oxygen Concentration:  68% compared to 100% at sea level

Walking Time:   4 hours and 45 minutes walking time (not including lunch or tea breaks). We took two tea breaks which were a half hour each. We also took a 45 minute lunch break. The total travel time was 6 hours and 30 minutes.

Distance:   7.4 km (4.6 miles) walking distance

Difficulty Level:  Very Difficult

Tea house:  Buddha Guest House or Red Panda Inn

Daily Details:   The first day of walking is extremely difficult because it is almost entirely uphill. The day starts off by following a dirt road through town for about 30 minutes. After that, it’s a short walk in the jungle along the river for 20 minutes followed by a steep uphill climb for almost an hour.

We decided to take a long tea break after the uphill climb at Srijana Hotel & Lodge for 30 minutes. From there it’s another hour straight uphill with no flat areas for an hour. We had lunch at Deurali Hotel & Lodge which took 45 minutes. Often, the teahouses cook items from scratch, so it can sometimes take over an hour for lunch. If you have a porter, you can send them ahead with your lunch order to save time.

After lunch, it’s yet another 45 minutes of climbing uphill. Here you’ll reach a small viewpoint. From the viewpoint, you’ll go uphill until you arrive in Dhimsa. This section is not as steep as the previous portions, but it is still uphill. We stopped for another tea break in Dhimsa because I was exhausted. The last section from Dhimsa to Chandanbari is also uphill, but it’s not nearly as bad as the first half of the day.

Overall, this is one of the hardest days of trekking I’ve ever completed. I was so tired at the end that I crashed into the bed. We had originally planned to walk to Laurebina, but there was no way we would have made it there.

Pro Tip:  Do training in advance by using a stair stepper or going up and down a set of stairs at least 20 times a day.

Day 3 – Chandanbari to Gosaikunda

Gosaikunda Altitude:   4,380m (14,370 ft)

Daily Altitude Increase:   1,050 m (3,445ft)

Oxygen Concentration:  60% compared to 100% at sea level

Walking Time:  5 hours and 15 minutes walking time (not including lunch or tea breaks). We stopped for a 40 minute tea break and a 40 minute lunch break along the way. Our total travel time was 6 hours and 35 minutes.

Distance:   9 km (5.6 miles) walking distance

Difficulty Level:  Difficult

Tea house:  Namaste Guest House

Daily Details:

The day starts with a beautiful path that wraps around the hills in the sunshine. It’s fairly flat with some steady but not steep uphill sections. Make sure to look behind you once in a while as the views behind you are beautiful on a clear day.

After a little over an hour, the trail turns into a pine forest. Through the trees on the left, you get glimpses of the Himalaya mountains. There’s an uphill climb through the woods, but it’s not as bad as day one. The views are stunning and it makes the trek worth every step.

After 25 minutes, you’ll reach Cholangpati for tea. We stopped at Hotel Langtang Lirung View for 30 minutes to take in the views and enjoy the fresh morning air.

From here, the path goes uphill the rest of the way until you reach Laurebina. This takes about an hour, but the views are indescribably beautiful. We probably stopped to take photos every 100 feet. This section is, in my opinion, the best part of the trek, so enjoy it and don’t rush too much.

We had lunch in Laurebina at the Mountain View Rest House so that we could enjoy the epic views. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many mountains this close up. Usually, you only see one major mountain at a time which makes this place special. I wish we had added an extra day to stay here like many of the other travelers did.

It takes us about an hour and fifteen minutes to get to the top of the hill above Laurebina. Other people breezed past us, but I was struggling with the altitude increase and my body hurt from the steep climb the day before. We also stopped for a lot of photos while tour groups seemed on a mission to get to the top as fast as possible. At the top, there’s a nice area to sit with a small Buddha statue and prayer flags dancing in the wind.

The next section runs along the cliffs. There are some steep uphill areas mixed in but nothing too bad. It feels much worse because of the altitude. Unfortunately, I was struggling at this point. I tend to hit a wall after so many hours of walking. I now know this is because I have Fibromyalgia, but I basically get so exhausted that I can’t cope. During the walk along the cliffs, my whole body ached. It took us about two and a half hours, but it took most people two hours to get to Gosaikunda from Laurebina.

Gosaikunda is a tiny village with views of a few different lakes. We arrived around 3:15pm after walking slowly, stopping for photos, and struggling with the fast increase in altitude. Once we arrived, we did an acclimation hike nearby to help us adjust to the altitude. We also decided to take altitude medicine. We almost never take Diamox, but the altitude increase on this trek is fast. If you stay in Laurebina you may not need medicine. Make sure to ask a doctor before using it as there are side effects.

Pro Tip:  Leave early so that you can get to Laurebina early enough to enjoy the clear skies. Clouds tend to roll in around 10:30am in the mountains. If you can, add a night to your itinerary to sleep in Laurebina because it’s the most beautiful part of the trek.

Day 4 – Gosaikunda to Chandanbari

Daily Altitude Decrease:   1,050 m (3,445ft)

Walking Time:  5 hours (not including lunch or tea breaks)

Distance:  9 km (5.6 miles) walking distance

Difficulty Level:  Moderate

We decided to add the Helambu Trek onto our itinerary on the way down, so we went back in a different direction, but I’ll write a separate post about that. If you do the Gosaikunda trek route by itself, you will head back to Chandanbari the same way you came. It takes about 5 hours to walk back. There are some steep downhill sections so you may want to bring trekking poles for support of your back and knees.

Day 5 – Chandanbari to Dhunche

Daily Altitude Decrease:   1,370 m (4,495 ft)

Walking Time:   6 hours (not including lunch or tea breaks)

From Chandanbari to Dhunche is about 6 hours depending on how easily you can go downhill. Be sure to bring any back or knee support you may need. This day is just walking down stairs for hours which can be rough on your knees. I recommend taking trekking poles so you can use your arms more and take pressure off your legs. If you’re young and fit you can probably jog down this no problem, but those over 40 years old or anyone with an old injury or knee issues will probably need to go a little slower.

Day 6 – Dhunche to Kathmandu by Jeep

Daily Altitude Decrease:   560 m (1,840 ft)

Oxygen Concentration:  85% compared to 100% at sea level

This drive is the same one as the way there. I recommend leaving early to avoid traffic and hiring a private jeep which is typically safer and more relaxing than the bus. It takes about 5.5 hours to get back to Kathmandu.

Best Langtang Gosaikunda trek Guide, Company

In October 2023, my friend and I went on the Langtang, Gosaikunda trek, which was arranged for us by the “Adventure Great Himalaya & Expedition” agency from Kathmandu. The whole trek was arranged and its course was perfect. The guide Shankar Karki and the porter Rajesh Karki a perfect job, including a personal approach to both of us.

3 Days Langtang Gosaikunda Trekking

Langtang Gosainkunda trekking is one of the most popular and astonishing trekking trails in Nepal . It is the combination of the Tamang culture, holy Gosainkunda Lake, Tibetan Monasteries, primitive Tibetan style houses, beautiful landscape, a nice waterfall, moderate trekking tour with the flamboyance of majestic mountains. The yak cheese factory is equally famous in this area.

This trekking route includes Langtang Valley and the holy Gosainkunda Lake located at 4300 meters. It includes majestic Himalayan views, glaciers, the most popular lakes, and a steep and decent climate.

3 Days Langtang Gosaikunda Trekking is similar to Manaslu Circuit Trek in Nepal . Thus, it’s moderately difficulty in trekking grade, and also the route is quite long.

3 Days Langtang Gosaikunda Trek Route

For the initiation of the Langtang Valley with Gosainkunda hike , we first have to travel from Kathmandu to Syafru Besi in an 8-9 hours long overland journey. To reach Syafru Besi, we have two different routes. We can either go there by using the Nagdhunga Roadways or Kakani.

I would highly recommend all the trekkers to go by a private vehicle as it is more luxurious, secure, and comfortable. At Syafru Besi we will take a break from our journey and have breakfast. Trip Overview

Langtang Gosaikunda Trek is a beautiful journey in Nepal through lush forests, quaint villages, abundant wildlife, and astounding views of the majestic Himalayas. The 17-day trek begins in Kathmandu with tours of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Then we drive to Syabrubesi which is a Tamang village located on the banks of the Bhote Koshi River and begin our trek. We reach Kyanjin Gompa and then climb Tserko Ri the next day. From there we get tremendous views of the Langtang Lirung (7,200m/23,622ft) range. Next, we continue trekking in the beautiful Langtang Valley and reach Gosaikunda which is a revered place of pilgrimage for both Buddhists and Hindus. Moreover, the place is named after the glistening Gosaikunda Lake whose water is believed to have magical healing powers. We pass by a few more lakes on our trek and cross the Laurebina Pass. Our trek in the Helambu Valley begins after crossing the pass. Another highlight of our hike is to reach the top of Ama Yangri at 3,800m. The view of the Himalayas from the top of the hill is believed to rival that of Poon Hill. From here, Mt. Shishapangma and the Langtang ranges seem so close that we feel that we can almost touch them. We continue trekking in the Helambu region for a few more days and end our remarkable journey to the mountains with a drive to Kathmandu.

Langtang Gosaikunda Trek takes us on a beautiful journey in Nepal through lush forests, quaint villages, abundant wildlife, and astounding views of the majestic Himalayas to the high and isolated Langtang Valley; populated by hospitable and welcoming Tamang people. Their religious practices, language, and dress are very similar to those of Tibet and to the traditions of their cousins in the middle hills. The area is famed for its pleasing local, exceptional tradition, Buddhist monasteries, and monuments along the way, and spectacular Mountain View. This charming Langtang valley trek with Holy Gosaikunda Lake follows the river upstream through pine, bamboo, and rhododendron forests, ascending through beautiful yak pastures to arrive at the alpine meadows of Kyanjin Gompa where you will get an extraordinary Mountain View just a stone’s throw from the Tibetan Boarder. The Langtang Valley is easily accessible from Dhunche (district headquarters of Rasuwa) town and the National Park office, which is a day's drive from Kathmandu. The upper reaches of Langtang can be reached in four days of easy trekking; however, it is worthwhile to spend a few days around the forest at Ghoda Tabela to watch for the red panda. Once above Langtang village and the monastery at Kyangjin, Langtang are inhabited by people of Tibetan descent whereas the villagers of Dhunche, Bharkhu, and Syabru further down are home to the Tamangs of Nepal's middle hills. Trekkers can explore the high valley of Langshisa, Kyamjin Ri and Chhirku Ri.

The forest around Ghode Tabela in the below Langtang Valley and lower the Gosaikunda Lakes are inhabited by the very shy red panda, a rare and endangered symbol of a healthy Himalayan ecosystem. Other animals, common to these forests are yellow-throated martens, wild boar, Himalayan black bear, Ghorel (Mountain Goat), grey langur monkeys, and leopards. The region is also home to Himalayan honeyguides, mountain pheasant, musk deer, and snow leopards. The upper Langtang Valley is one of the few known breeding grounds of the ibis bills besides the Tibetan snow cock and snow partridge. Like other Himalayan nature parks, Langtang has to be explored on foot. There are several possible trails to choose from depending on your favorite and the time available. Kindly write us for your customized trip itinerary, price, and trek map.

  • Discover the Tibetan culture and Tibetan mountain views with amazing glaciers and monasteries.
  • Visit typical Tamang villages and their traditional cultures, but also the Langtang National Park and its wildlife, rhododendron forests, and nice tea houses.
  • Homely hospitality. Walk alongside the holy lake Gosaikunda and observe the sunset and sunrise views in mountain.
  • Relax through peaceful forest walks and views of unlimited green valleys from Singgomba and taste the delicious local Yak cheese.

We can see an image of Shiva at its center, filled with water in this lake. We have to also customize the Gosaikunda festival trek to coincide with this special festive at the Langtang region.

Altitude sickness/ Insurance/ Medication/Equipment's

What is altitude sickness.

Many people are concerned about altitude sickness. This problem, often known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a particularly important medical consideration while trekking in Nepal and Tibet. Altitude illness rarely occurs lower than 2800 meters (9520ft) and only minor symptoms occur below 3000 meters (9,800ft). AMS occurs when the body does not adapt well to less oxygen at higher altitudes. At 18,000 ft (5490m), there is one half the oxygen available as at sea level; on top of Mount Everest, only one third. The body tries to adapt to less oxygen by increasing the rate and depth of breathing, as well as the heart rate. Individual susceptibility to altitude sickness seems to be genetically determined.

What happens to the body during altitude illness? Fluids accumulate in between the cells in the brain and/or the lungs, creating mild or severe symptoms. Mild symptoms include headache, loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue, lack of sleep and dizziness. These symptoms usually resolve by spending one or two extra nights at the same altitude. If symptoms worsens descent to lower altitudes is warranted..

If you are resting at the same altitude and your symptoms are becoming worse, then it is also necessary to descend.

More serious symptoms of AMS include increased tiredness, severe headache, vomiting,, loss of coordination, shortness of breath, cough. These extremely dangerous symptoms are called High Altitude Cerebral Edema (or HACE). They can lead to unconsciousness and death within 12 hours.

Increasing shortness of breath, cough and tiredness may also be signs of High Altitude Pulmonary Edema or HAPE. HAPE can also be rapidly fatal if ignored.

Respiratory depression (the slowing down of breathing) can be caused by various medications, and may be a problem at altitude. The following substances can do this and should never be used by someone who has symptoms of altitude illness:

  • Sleeping pills (acetazolamide is the sleeping tablet of choice at altitude)
  • Narcotic pain medications in more than modest doses

To prevent AMS and respiratory depression, drink at least three liters of liquids a day and avoid getting cold. Altitude sickness can to a certain extent be prevented by acetazolamide (Diamox SR), 750mg per day. Some experts suggest a two-day trial before the trip. Please seek the advice of your personal physician. Please note that taking Diamox SR does not mean that you can ignore advice about proper acclimatization.

To recap, serious symptoms of altitude sickness include:

  • A severe, enduring headache, which is not cured by ordinary painkillers
  • Marked nausea and repeated vomiting
  • Irritating dizziness or actual difficulty with balance and direction
  • Visual disturbances with flickering vision and problems judging distance
  • Pressure in the chest, rapid breathing and pulse rate, crackles in breathing and shortness of breath
  • Swelling beneath the skin (edema), typically around the eyes
  • Swollen ankles and hands
  • Convulsions

In the presence of these symptoms, medical attention must be sought immediately in conjunction with descent to the lowest possible height.

Prevention of Altitude Illness:

  • What happens to the body in altitude illness? Fluid accumulates in between cells in the brain and/or the Symptoms can be mild or severe. Mild symptoms of acute mountain sickness or

AMS are headache, loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue, lack of sleep and dizziness. These symptoms can resolve once someone is acclimatized e.g. by spending one or two extra nights at the same altitude or symptoms may worsen needing someone to descend to lower altitudes.

  • When mild symptoms develop, it is a signal that you must stay at that altitude until symptoms have gone away. Usually within one or two days you will feel well and can continue your trek. If you are resting at the same altitude and your symptoms are becoming worse, then it is necessary to descend. Worsening symptoms of AMS including increasing tiredness, severe headache, vomiting, and loss of coordination. These are signs of High Altitude Cerebral Edema (or HACE). HACE can lead to unconsciousness and death within 12 hours if progressive symptoms are ignored. Increasing shortness of breath, cough, and tiredness are signs of High Altitude Pulmonary Edema or HAPE. HAPE can also be rapidly fatal if ignored. Some experts suggest that to get to know the possible drug side effects it is wise to give it a two-day trial before the trip. This is an unlicensed use of this medicine, which is also only available on prescription, so it should only be undertaken on the advice of a doctor. Possible side effects include nausea: taste disturbance, tingling hands and feet, frequent and copious urination, visual disturbances and skin However, taking Diamox SR does not mean people can ignore advice about slow ascent.

Gosaikunda Trek Itinerary- 4 Days Itinerary Breakdown

Gosaikunda Trek , an ideal short-budget trekking in Nepal, takes four days to complete. Starting with a drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche and trek to the lake, you’ll return to Kathmandu on the 4th day. Some trekkers even complete this trek in just three days. However,  4 days Gosaikunda Trek Itinerary  gives you a comfortable trek experience with ample rest. Moreover, the four days on the route see you ascending slowly and avoiding altitude sickness.

In this photo, there's a beautiful view of Gosaikunda Lake on a clear weather day when viewed from the lakeside. You'll reach this lake on 3rd day of this trek.

Gosaikunda Lake sits at an altitude of 4,320 meters . Further, the Gosaikunda Trek Distance , between Dhunche, the starting point of this trek in Rasuwa, and the lake itself is roughly 18-20 km . Considering this distance, it’s the shortest-distance adventure trekking in Nepal. But, considering the altitude gain, comparatively, there’s barely any trekking in Nepal that gains altitude faster than this trek.

The four-day itinerary gives you ample time to hike up to the lake and return to Dhunche safely. With two overnight stops en route before reaching the lake, you’ll acclimate well and avoid altitude sickness. You can read our blog, Gosaikunda Trek: Easy yet arduous trekking in Nepal , to learn more about this trek’s difficulty when trekkers complete this trek within two to three days.

In this  4 days Gosaikunda Trek Itinerary blog , we’ve detailed each day the trek route, overnight camps, the walking distance, and places to stop for lunch/tea break.

Gosaikunda Trek Itinerary- Outline Overview

  • Day 1: Drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche (121 km, 7 hours) . Trek to Deurali (5.4 km, 4 hours)
  • Day 2: Trek from Deurali to Lauribinayak (7.5 km, 8 hours)
  • Day 3: Trek from Lauribinayak to Gosaikunda Lake. Return to Deurali/Chandanbari (14 km, 8-9 hours)
  • Day 4: Trek from Deurali/Chandanbari to Dhunche. Drive to Kathmandu (5.4 km, 2 hours)

4 days Gosaikunda Trek Itinerary Detailed Breakdown

Trekker on Gosaikunda Lake Trek showing the navigation board near Dhunche

Day 1: Drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche. Trek to Deurali/Chandanbari

The first day of 4 days Gosaikunda Lake Trek adventure begins with a 7-8 hours long drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche. The bus departs from Machhapokhari Chowk at 9-10 am. Past this, you may not find any buses leaving for Dhunche.

The bus takes a turn from Galchi and drives along Pasang Lhamu highway. It stops at Bidur for lunch. Before the bus stops at the Langtang National Park check post, you’ll pass beautiful villages and landslide-prone cliffs.

At the checkpost, the Nepal army on duty checks your backpack. You should get a permit if you plan to fly a drone for videos. However, they’ll seize it from you and return it to you when you return to Kathmandu.

You’ll reach Dhunche in a minute from the checkpoint. You can stop at hotels in Dhunche for lunch.

As most trekkers leave Dhunche around 2:30 pm to Deurali, some even hike up to Chandanbari.

Dhunche to Deurali

After leaving Dhunche, for 30-30 minutes, you’ll hike on a plastered trail. You’ll also cross a suspension bridge at Ghatte Khola, near Mini Gosaikunda. There’s also a waterfall near Mini Gosaikunda that is worth the visit.

Past the waterfall, it ascends to Khendi and Deurali. The best part is that the trails here are cemented now. However, you’ll quickly get tired while hiking up. Periodic rest and rehydration are a must here.

Stopping at a tea house in Deurali is highly recommended. By the time you reach Deurali, it gets dark. The nearest camp to Deurali is Dhimsa, which sits one hour away. Also, Dhimsa is another uphill hike. However, trekkers in a group hike up to Chandanbari till 8 pm.

Beautiful Deurali, the first day overnight stoping place

Note:  Chandanbari sits around 3,400 meters. Gaining this altitude daily from Dhunche can take time and effort. If hiked here on day 1, you may get altitude sickness the next day.

Day 2: Trek from Deurali/Dhimsa to Lauribinayak

After breakfast at the tea house in Deurali/Dhimsa, you’ll prepare to hike to Lauribinayak.

Trekker leaving Deurali and hiking to Dhimsa

After leaving Deurali, till Dhimsa, it’s a steep uphill hike. As plant litter covers most of the trail between Deurali and Dhimsa, you should be careful while hiking. There are certain resting spots en route where you can stop for rehydration and to catch a breath.

From Dhimsa, you’ll hike another hour uphill to Chandanbari. It’s a beautiful place on the entire Gosaikunda Trek Route with well-decorated tea houses. Also, its setting makes it a beautiful place to stop.

Chandanbari, a popular place to stay overnight in Gosaikunda Trek

The trail between Chandanbari to Cholangpati is flat. Also, the tall pine tree forest makes the hike serene and shady.

You’ll stop for lunch at a tea house in Cholangpati.

With 30 minutes of rest past lunch, you’ll start the final push for the day, hike to Lauribinayak. With cemented trail till Lauribinayak, the trail has now been well maintained and accessible for trekkers to hike.

One hour hike from Cholangpati takes you to the tea house at Lauribinayak. Overnight accommodation at Hotel Mount Rest in Lauribinayak.

Day 3: Trek from Lauribinayak to Gosaikunda Lake. Hike down to Deurali

You’ll reach Gosaikunda on 3rd day of your Gosaikunda Trek 4 days Itinerary.

Your trek guide from NepTrek will wake you up around 4:30 in the morning. After tea and some hot water, you’ll prepare for the uphill hike from Lauribinayak to Buddha Mandir. While hiking up to Buddha Mandir around 5:30 am, you’ll see the beautiful Langtang mountain range painted on shimmering yellow of sunrise.

You’ll take a few minutes of good rest at Buddha Mandir before hiking further. It would help if you were very careful as the route passes here gets steeper at certain sections.

After 30 minutes of hiking past Buddha Mandir, you’ll see Saraswati Kunda, one of the sister lakes of Gosaikunda. Another 30-minute hike from the Saraswati Kunda viewpoint takes you close to Bhairav Kunda. Finally, you’ll reach Gosaikunda Lakeside.

Trekkers from NepTrek, enjoying their moments at Gosaikunda Lake

You can either stroll around the lake or even take a bath there. You’ll have your lunch at one of the hotels at the lakeside.

After a good time at the lake, you’ll return to Lauribinayak. From Lauribinayak, it’s a complete downhill hike to Deurali.

You’ll stop at Cholangpati and Chandanbari for a tea break and rehydration.

Overnight at the tea house in Deurali.

Day 4: Trek from Deurali to Dhunche. Drive to Kathmandu

On the 4th day, you’ll return to Dhunche from Deurali. For most sections, you’ll descend to Ghatte Khola and Mini Gosaikunda.

As the bus from Dhunche to Kathmandu departs at 11 am, you should catch the early bus. Otherwise, you’ll be struck in Dhunche for the whole day.

It takes two hours from Deurali to Dhunche. You’ll get your breakfast at Dhunche and lunch at Bidur.

You’ll reach Kathmandu around 4 pm.

It marks the end of your four days Gosaikunda Lake Trek Itinerary.
