After a stunning first episode that culminated in Richard Hammond's much publicized Rimac Concept One crash, episode two had a lot to live up to. Luckily, an old favorite theme emerged: Cars vs Public transport. Many of the best episodes of the show-that-won't-be-named revolved around these races. Simply put, some incredible car is put up against another form of transportation to see which is fastest. This time, it was a Ford GT vs an airliner.

It's a Race!

Jeremy Clarkson in a Ford GT vs James May and Hammond taking an airplane. Of course, even the 550 horsepower Ford is no match for an airplane traveling about 500 mph, but, as we all know, it is not the flight itself that is the problem.

The race is from New York to Niagra Falls, a 420 mile drive (or an hour and 15 minute flight), and the team sets off from Central Park. To make things even more interesting, Hammond is still injured from his crash and is on crutches. He is hobbled to the point of holding up Captain Slow of all people and missing their first two trains to the airport.

Typical shenanigans from Clarkson make sure the other two are in for a tough time, one of which is calling the airline to request alcohol not be served after convincing them May and Hammond are fresh out of rehab.

James May, "The worlds worst carer" leaves Hammond behind and struggling until he finally gets him a wheel chair in the airport. When he got the chair, however, May got rid of Hammond's crutches, meaning he could not go through security on his own, which necessitated everyone's greatest airport security nightmare: the pat down.

Jeremy's impressions of the Ford GT are a highlight of the race for gearheads, as he used to own the previous generation and has quite a soft spot for the impractical, supremely stiff, street legal race car. He doesn't mind the harshness and loves the noise regardless of the turbo V6 being short two cylinders.

With Clarkson only 153 miles away from the finish, Hammond and May are still at JFK airport.

To the Studio

Back in the studio, the trio discuss F1 drivers chugging podium champagne, herding autonomous cars and extorting their sponsors.

Then, the first self-contained car review of the season: The Mercedes-AMG GT R. Jeremy has the honors and describes this car as the result of bored engineers and designers begging to be set loose for just one project. The highlights include an adjustment knob for different levels of 'off' for the traction control, four-wheel steering and a (short lived, thanks to Porsche) rear wheel drive record at the Nurburgring.

The downside, according to Clarkson, is that this Mercedes-AMG is almost too good. When he gets into an AMG, or any car for that matter, he wants to be sideways, and the GT R just handles too well. In fact, Jeremy says it is the first time he has ever been in an AMG and only used one set of tires.

Then, it is time to test the GT R on track, and for that they interviewed countless drivers to replace the hated 'American' character until deciding on a woman named... they won't say. The Mercedes-AMG did a 1:18.7 around the track, good for third fastest, but all we care about is who the driver is!

So,  we found out !

For the 'Celebrity F-Off,' we get cricket player Kevin Peterson vs an unrecognizable American baseball player, Brian Wilson. You know the name, but without a giant, jet black beard, the former Giants and Dodgers pitcher looks like a totally different person.

Their laps were about as different as their personalities, as Wilson was all over the place and Peterson looked slow and methodical. Wilson was in the grass, cutting corners, sloppy and dramatic and Peterson slowly rolled away from the start line. But what's faster? Peterson won with a 1:17.2 to Wilson's 1:17.5 as the fastest two around the new track so far this season. The shocking result reinforces that smooth is fast and what looks best on TV is not the way to put in fast times.

The Final Leg

We return to the race to see Richard being wheeled down the aisle of the plane and Jeremy struggling to pay at an American gas station. As the airplane begins to catch up to Clarkson, he is being constantly frustrated by left-lane hoggers forcing him to pass on the right.

Clarkson is still 130 miles away when the plane lands early. Leading up to a thrilling finish that even gave us something we have never seen before: James May "was doing running" on television!

It was all for naught as Jeremy was waiting for them at the Niagra Falls observation deck as the winner of the race.

Impressions

The studio portion remains more focused than the first season with conversation street, the Mercedes-AMG review and the celebrity 'F-off' all staying entertaining even if they occasionally get so deep into their British-ness that it leaves the American guest (and audience) politely smiling to hide their confusion.

The race was very good and genuinely funny as the three got more frantic as they closed in on the finish, but it was just shy of one of the classics, the Japanese bullet-train race.

James May had the quote of the episode as he was teasing Hammond about his temporary disability:

"You're not disabled. You have a playground injury as a result of your own half-wittedness."

Episode Guide

In this show Jeremy Clarkson drives the all-new, 647 horsepower Ford GT from New York city to Niagara Falls, a trip that is made more challenging by the car’s uncompromising, racing-car-for-the-road design and by James May who, using only public transportation, is trying to beat Jeremy to the finish line.

Can a carbon fibre bodied, twin turbo missile make it to the Falls before a disgruntled man forced to drag a moaning, wounded colleague onto buses, trains and planes?

Also in this show, Jeremy takes to the Eboladrome track in the Mercedes-AMG GT R and another burning question is answered by Celebrity Face Off as cricketer Kevin Pietersen and baseball’s Brian Wilson go head-to-head to find the world’s fastest who makes a living from hitting and throwing and catching small balls.

Good episode, better than the first one. The guests were far more entertaining than the last ones.

8 Mercedes AMG GT R third fastest at Grand Tour test track

The Grand Tour Season 2 has started and this week's second episode "The Falls Guys" finally featured timed test at the Grand Tour Eboladrome .

The car to take honors as being first with recorded lap time in new series and with the new (female) test driver is Mercedes AMG GT-R .

AMG GT R, with a blank space and not a dash "-" between the T and R, is fastest version of the Mercedes AMG GT 2 door front engined sports coupe. It used to be fastest rear wheel drive car around Nürburgring , until, just recently, Porsche 911 GT2 RS beat it and everything else, including four-wheel-drives which used to dominate at Nürburgring.

Interestingly, Jeremy Clarkson wasn't too fussed about AMG GT R track credentials and said he would rather prefer more old-school AMG with less traction at the rear and more capacity for destroying tyres.

Probably the mind was elsewhere and the guy mixed up the P Zero Trofeos with the Gallardo's/Huracán's racer. :)

P.S. Who else thinks they have some sort of product placement going on with JetBlue airlines in the Ford GT vs plane segment? They mentioned JetBlue by name several times, had these phone calls with Jeremy with them showing also their logo on dashboard monitor, and nice outside shots of JetBlue plane taking off and in the air...

I think that's the new "Amazon way" of sustaining budget and turning profit from the show. I remember in first season opener they had this huge extravaganza Ford Mustang intro which really did look like an over-the-top ad.

With BBC at least they didn't have to do that... only thing wrong with BBC was many ppl butthurt about controversial things Jeremy said sending complaint letters.

None of those so called "competition" are even close to the Bugatti Tourbillion. That ...

PRUEBA | Ducati Multistrada V4S Grand Tour, dulces sueños

Su nombre completo es Ducati Multistrada V4S Grand Tour y es la mejor Multistrada que puedes comprar, y además tiene uno de los mejores motores del mercado a día de hoy.

La Multistrada cumple 20 años

En 2023, Ducati celebró los 20 años de Multistrada. Un modelo que asegura cifras de ventas y, por tanto, ingresos para la relativamente pequeña marca italiana. La base de esta nueva GT es siempre una V4S , con maletas laterales, con faros antiniebla, con asiento calefactado para el conductor y el pasajero, con puños calefactables, con arranque sin llave y control de crucero por radar, con control de presión de neumáticos, con caballete central y con una pintura especial para esta versión GT.

El diseño negro mate/gris mate con detalles en rojo es exclusivo de la GT y es el único color disponible. Además, incorpora ciertos detalles en negro (palanca de cambios, tirantes de reposapiés traseros..), y los ingenieros han quitado la goma de los tirantes del manillar para una sensación más directa desde la rueda delantera. Además del color más novedoso y especial, podrás equipar la Ducati Multistrada V4S GT con accesorios originales, por supuesto, pagarás más de esta manera.

Maletas laterales con un método de conexión único

A diferencia de mis pruebas habituales, comencé este viaje por la tarde en lugar de por la mañana. Llene las maletas laterales el día de antes con lo necesario para pasar unos días fuera de casa y así poder disfrutar de esta Ducati Multistrada V4S GT durante muchas horas. Circulando lo primero por autopista, pasando por carreteras secundarias con las luces antiniebla encendidas hasta llegar de noche al primer hotel, “¡Dulces sueños y hasta mañana!”

Me llama especialmente la atención que las maletas laterales casi no se ven afectadas por el viento. Ducati utiliza un sistema que conecta las dos maletas con un sistema de fijación situado a ambos lados del sillín del pasajero y que están conectados entre sí por debajo y si mueves una maleta hacia adelante y hacia atrás, la otra maleta avanza. Otro aspecto bueno es que hay bastante espacio (siempre necesario) en las maletas y para dar un buen paseo esto siempre es de agradecer.

Control de crucero adaptativo: no para todos

Estoy menos entusiasmado con el control de crucero adaptativo y con sistema de radar. Desafortunadamente, el sistema es de serie en esta Ducati Multistrada V4S Grand Tour, por lo que no hay opción para obtener un control de crucero normal. Lo molesto de la versión adaptativa es que, cuando se conduce en grupo de forma escalonada, el radar se enfoca la moto que está directamente enfrente, no a la moto que circula en la diagonal nuestra. Esto hace que sigas la moto equivocada y nos ofrece maniobras extrañas de aceleración y frenado. Sin embargo, si conduces solo y no en grupo, el sistema funciona mejor. Es perfecto para seguir a un coche que circula exactamente a tu propio ritmo sin tener que utilizar el acelerador ni el freno. Personalmente, a pesar de ser una inteligente tecnología necesaria para el sistema de radar, sigo prefiriendo el control de crucero normal. Este sistema funciona mucho mejor y distrae menos.

¿Calefacción en los asientos? Ni siquiera es necesario.

Durante la fresca mañana que nos amenazaba al despertar, pude probar el confort y el calentamiento del asiento. Pero lo cancele rápidamente, porque es completamente innecesario . El motor V4 produce tanto calor que un asiento ventilado sería mucho mejor . Ni siquiera los canales de refrigeración que tiene la Multistrada para enviar aire fresco a tus pies ayudan. Y si, este es el único defecto del motor V4, pero no nos oirá quejarnos.

¡Qué gran motor es este! Tiene tanta elasticidad que casi puedes sentir cómo se estira, tanta potencia que a veces da miedo, tanta suavidad que te alegra tener un tacómetro porque de lo contrario no tienes idea de lo que está haciendo el motor. Una impresionante tracción a bajas revoluciones y aumento de potencia a altas revoluciones. Es un motor que demuestra por qué la configuración V4 funciona tan bien , incluso en una moto de turismo. Por supuesto, rara vez, o nunca, utilizarás los 170 cv , son demasiados si, pero la sensación de saber que tienes tanto poder en la reserva vale más que eso.

Seminario de electrónica

Estoy igualmente entusiasmado con el cambio rápido. Ya sabes que Ducati logra esto con su imponente electrónica. Quizás sea lo menos conocido dentro de los modelos V4 de Ducati pero es, con diferencia, uno de los mejores del mercado . Este modelo incorpora una configuración altamente refinada de electrónica, también en términos de control de tracción, ABS, control de tracción, etc.. que también se refleja en la respuesta del acelerador y del freno.

Tienes la impresión de que el motor parece conectarse directamente a tu muñeca , sin cortes ni reacciones bruscas, pero cada vez el motor responde como quieres. Lo mismo ocurre con los frenos. Frenos que nunca te sorprenden pero que destacan en su rendimiento.

Mientras que las marcas europeas suelen dar una impresión más agresiva y las marcas japonesas hacen exactamente lo contrario, y la Multistrada está justo en el medio .

¿Transmisión relajada o deportiva?

Ahora toca rodar por carreteras en no tan buenas condiciones como el asfalto de una autovía, con baches, algunos hundimientos de la carretera, muchas irregularidades.. pero la Multistrada V4S Grand Tour tiene un rendimiento aún más impresionante gracias a la suspensión electrónica (que viene de serie). El sistema Sachs Skyhook me permite flotar como “en un gancho” sobre el asfalto, para que la moto se mantenga bien equilibrada. Es una tecnología que funciona muy bien en una moto de turismo y, por lo tanto, también en la Multistrada. Y si no estás satisfecho con su funcionamiento, siempre puedes ajustar la precarga del muelle manualmente o dejar que el ordenador haga su trabajo 20 veces por segundo y poner el sistema en “automático”. ¿Ruedas tranquilamente por el asfalto con tu pasajero?  Se ajusta la rigidez de la suspensión hacia abajo. ¿Te gusta una conducción deportiva y quieres todo más robusto? Pues todo esto se puede hacer en marcha , las opciones están ahí y funcionan según lo prometido.

Vamos ahora a lo “duro”

Llega la hora de conducir solo y me preparo para atacar con fuerza la carretera de montaña. Dejando la respuesta del acelerador en ‘Touring’ y no la cambie al modo más agresivo ‘Sport’. La suspensión pasa al segundo ajuste más rígido. Las horquillas se colocan rápidamente y la GT intenta seguir el ritmo. Funciona todo , pero no puedes equivocarte. Debido al peso de la moto 254 kg (más las maletas laterales cargadas), es mejor no frenar demasiado lento. Esto todavía se puede corregir bastante bien al subir el puerto, pero al bajarlo hay que prestar mucha atención. No es que esto alguna vez vaya a ser un problema, porque el ABS en curvas está ahí para ayudarte en caso de emergencia.

Para los lectores que ya hayan leído la prueba de la Ducati Streetfighter V4S , hay pocas novedades en este artículo. La nueva Ducati Multistrada V4S Grand Tour es un V4S adornado que se conduce y funciona exactamente igual.

Sin lugar a dudas es una de las mejores y más completas motos que puedes comprar hoy en día, y ahora disponible en versión GT, siendo un poco más asequible si te gustan los accesorios estándar ya instalados. Se paga un alto precio por esto, pero eso tampoco es nuevo para los usuarios de las Ducati (Multistrada). La V4S GT no es el regalo más impresionante del vigésimo aniversario de la Multistrada, pero es uno de los mejores. Esta es la Multistrada que debes tener .
