21 Things to do in Iloilo + Tourist Spots

I’ve lived in Iloilo almost my entire life, over three decades of calling it my home. That said, I know a lot about this province that I love deeply, and I’d like to share some beautiful spots that will hopefully inspire you to explore Iloilo.

Located in the geographic center of the country, along the southern coast of heart-shaped Panay Island, Iloilo has a lot to offer for travelers who want to explore beyond the Philippines’ typical tourist trail.

The provincial capital, Iloilo City is well-known for its traditional food, rich history, colorful festivals, and progressive yet laid-back vibe. In the northern part of the province, you’ll find stunning islands with gleaming white-sand beaches and a hidden lagoon.

Head south to see centuries-old churches and well-preserved heritage sites built during the Spanish-colonial era. Meanwhile, Central Iloilo is blessed with scenic mountains and countryside views.

Molo Church in Molo, Iloilo City, Philippines

Molo Plaza is the central landmark of Molo, one of the seven districts of Iloilo City. This area is where you can find many of the city’s iconic tourist spots including Molo Church and Molo Mansion. The district is also the birthplace of Pancit Molo (a popular Filipino wonton soup dish). Order a hot bowl of Kap Ising’s signature Pancit Molo at the tiny cafe at the plaza. Molo Church (St. Anne Parish Church) dominates the district’s skyline with its towering bell tower and signature red spires. Constructed in 1831, this Neo-Gothic colonial church is known as the “feminist church” because of the all-women ensemble of saints represented in 16 statues perched on the aisle pillars. The Molo Mansion is one of Iloilo City’s finest old homes. It was built in the 1920s and was reopened as a tourist spot and pasalubong store by SM’s Kultura.

Jaro Cathedral in Iloilo City, Philippines

Constructed in 1874, the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral is the first cathedral in Panay Island and an important pilgrimage site among devotees of the miraculous Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria. Her statue, perched atop the façade of the cathedral, was canonically crowned by a Pope and Saint John Paul II. The bell tower is located across a busy street from the church, which makes it distinct from other churches in Iloilo. Another feature of the church is its all-male ensemble of saints placed on the main pillars, except for the Virgin’s icon. The arrangement is in response to Molo Church’s all-female theme. The Candelaria’s feast is celebrated every 2nd of February, which draws a huge crowd of devotees.

ILOILO TOURIST SPOT

ILOILO TRAVEL GUIDE: TOURIST SPOTS

1. Jaro Cathedral

Address: Jaro, Iloilo

Admission: FREE

The Jaro Cathedral—built in Romanesque Revival style— is unique for having its bell tower located across the street. The present structure was constructed in 1874 with the two towers and the front balcony added in the 1950s after an earthquake damaged the facade. The cathedral’s main retablo and altar and the ceiling are a sight to behold. Another distinct feature of the cathedral is the presence of the statue of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria or the Lady of the Candles on the walls of the church—making it the only female among the all-male statues of saints.

2. Casa Mariquit

Address: Sta.Isabel Street, Jaro, Iloilo

Open Hours: Daily 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Admission: ₱50 ($0.98, €0.88)

Casa Mariquit is a well-preserved ancestral house of the Javellana and Lopez family, constructed in 1803 by Don Julio Quisumbing Javellana. It was eventually passed on to his granddaughter Mariquit and Fernando Lopez, the former Iloilo City Mayor, Senate President, Vice President of the Philippines in 1950’s for 3 terms, and co-founder of ABS-CBN and Meralco.

Casa Mariquit is located in a small street in Jaro, Iloilo with a gigantic balete tree. The gorgeous 2-storey traditional house is a typical bahay na bato made of brick walls, lime mortar, and hardwood. The silong (underground) houses a metal vault and became a veritable bank.

3.Calle Real

Address: General Luna Street, Iloilo City

Open Hours: 24/7

Calle Real is a historic street in Iloilo where most of the city’s heritage buildings can be found. Architecture junkies will delight at the many art deco, beaux-arts and neoclassical buildings here. While some of the old houses are in state of ruins, there is a growing movement to restore all the structures in this Spanish era street. This is a good place to take a walk and get a feel of the olden vibe of Iloilo City.

4.Casa Real de Iloilo

Open Hours: Weekdays 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Casa Real de Iloilo, a National Historic Site, is the Old Capitol Building of Iloilo. It was constructed in 1869 during the Spanish rule and is situated along Muelle Loney Street and General Luna Street. Casa Real serves as the Kilometer Zero of Iloilo, just like the Negros Occidental Capitol Park and Lagoon in Bacolod .

5.Museo Iloilo

Address: Iloilo City Proper, Iloilo

A small museum located right smack in the downtown area, Museo Iloilo houses art pieces showcasing the richness of Panay’s Cultural Heritage as well as contemporary art pieces. Various exhibits are held every month so even if you have visited this place in the past, there is always something new to marvel at.

6.Molo Church (Saint Anne Parish Church)

Address: 132 San Pedro Street, Molo, Iloilo

Known as the “ Feminist Church ” because it houses 16 statues of female saints, this Gothic Church constructed in 1888 is considered as one of the most beautiful churches in the Philippines. WHERE TO EAT IN ILOILO CITY

ILOILO TRAVEL GUIDE: ILOILO FOOD

Netong’s Original La Paz Batchoy

Lost in the “ batchoy war ” between Deco’s and Ted’s, is a culinary icon of the city: Netong’s Original La Paz Batchoy. Serving a bowl-full of goodness at its original location inside La Paz Market, Netong’s has become a must-go-to-eat place by both locals and visitors of Iloilo City since it first opened in the 1940’s. So, when you find yourself in the city of love, do yourself a favor by ordering a mega bowl of La Paz Batchoy and feast yourself to happiness.

A throwback from today’s Instagrammable cafés, Madge Café retains its charming rustic vibe as it remains a huge part of Iloilo City’s coffee culture 50 years after it first opened. Screaming of authenticity notwithstanding its fading wall paints and flooring, this coffee shop—which is also located inside La Paz Market—offers a genuine coffee experience in a stripped back and no-frills environment.

Samurai Talabahan

When traveling to Iloilo City, one must include a stop at a seafood haven. You will be hard-pressed to find something better than Samurai Talabahan. Situated just across Smallville, this popular seafood joint is another local favorite because of its big, sumptuous servings of cheap oysters baked in a myriad of ways. They also serve grilled pork and chicken.

Roberto’s Siopao

Another culinary institution in Iloilo City is Roberto’s Siopao. Known for its oversized pieces of siopao such as Queen Siopao (stuffed with Chinese sausage, pork adobo, bacon and egg); King Siopao (stuffed with ham, chicken, pork adobo, egg and Chinese sausage); Jumbo Siopao (stuffed with chicken sausage, chicken adobo and egg) and the Regular Siopao filled with pork adobo and egg. Located right smack at Iloilo’s heritage district at Basa Street, Roberto’s Siopao also serve other savory dishes.

Tatoy’s Manokan and Seafood

Included in almost every “ Places to Eat in Iloilo ” listicle articles, Tatoy’s Manokan and Seafood serves a medley of mouthwatering Filipino native cuisines like their signature native lechon manok, grilled scallops, baked talaba, steamed pasayan, blue marlin, fish tail soup and more. This place is perfect for dining with the whole family or a large group of friends because of their way of serving their food in a fiesta-like atmosphere.

Brewery Gastropub

The local craft beer trend has arrived in Iloilo and it’s all good. Kudos to Brewery Gastropub for further promoting Philippine-brewed beers such as: Boracay Blonde, Guimaras Goose, Dinagyang Pale Ale and more. Because ordering these fine tasting beers requires to be matched with tasteful side dishes, Brewery Gastropub has also come up with a sumptuous menu consisting of fancy dishes like Beer Can chicken, rack of skewers, boneless crispy pata and more. There is no better way to cap off your Iloilo trip by having a local craft beer session at this place.

Breakthrough Restaurant

A must-dine place in Iloilo for travellers craving for the freshest seafood, Breakthrough has sort of become a tourist attraction on its own–owing to the fact that it has been a big part of the city’s culinary culture. Popular dishes here includes the Aligue rice, Managat Fish (red snapper), Imbao clams, fresh oysters cooked in various ways, diwal shells and many more.

WHEN TO GO IN ILOILO

During the monsoon months from June to August, make sure to check out the weather update for upcoming typhoons as the province situates in the path of most storms that makes landfall in the Philippines. Other than that, every month appears to be the best time to visit Iloilo. If you want to mix seeing the tourist spots in Iloilo with a festive event, then you better time your visit with the Dingayang Festival.

ILOILO TRAVEL GUIDE - ILOILO FESTIVAL

Dinagyang Festival

Rock and dance to the stomping drumming beats of this festival, known for its lively music, graceful dances and colorful costumes. Dinagyang Festival, celebrated every fourth Sunday of January is one of the most popular and oldest festivals in the Philippines. This is a good time to experience Iloilo as everyone seemed to be in jovial mood celebrating the festival by dancing in unison to the lively rhythms.

Paraw Regatta

Believed to be Asia’s oldest traditional sea craft, the Paraw Regatta gathers seafarers for a race over the waters of Iloilo Strait from Iloilo City to the island of Guimaras. Aboard colorful Paraw sailboats, in dozens and sometimes numbering to a hundred, it dishes a spectacular sight as each Paraw glides smoothly over the sea.

The design of modern day Paraws still possesses the original design of the Paraw sailboats of the first settlers of Iloilo who came from the island of Borneo in early 13th century. First started in 1973, the Paraw Regatta is celebrated every 3rd weekend of the month of February.

The province is blessed with unbelievable islands and islets that could rival the famous Boracay Island anytime.

There are hidden caves and lagoons, majestic mountains and falls, and a full lineup of heritage homes and century-old churches that stand today as living museums.

A vacation in Iloilo City and its neighboring towns will give you a glimpse of the province’s natural beauty as well as the opulence of its heritage homes.

Here are the best experiences you can have that you should add to your Iloilo tour itinerary.

Islas de Gigantes, one of the top tourist spots in Iloilo

Your trip to Iloilo won’t be complete without trying different Gigantes Islands tours .

Also called Islas de Gigantes , it is perhaps the most famous Iloilo tourist spot with its secret caves and lagoons, fantastic beaches, and gastronomic seafood lunch buffets!

See our popular Islas de Gigantes Tours

Here are the top activities you should add to your Islas de Gigantes island-hopping itinerary:

This island is perhaps one of the most recognizable in Gigantes Island because of its widely shared photos on social media. The Cabugao Gamay Island is famous not just for its beauty but also for its peculiar, elongated shape.

From above, one end of the island is covered with thick flora, while the other end features some rock formations. In between is a beautiful white sandbar, while emerald green waters surround the island.

The beach is filled with piles of zen stones that recently became an unexpected tourist attraction on Cabugao Gamay Island.

Wonderful beach in Bantigue Island

Head to the surreal Bantigue Island and its amazingly long sandbar. How the sandbar looks depends on the current, so it is better to check the local weather before you go.

If you want to camp out on an island, Bantigue Island is the place to do it. Imagine how perfect the sunrises and sunsets would be. Apart from swimming and camping, one of the best things to do here is to feast on scallops!

This beach in Iloilo has vast boulders on its shores. If you look a little closer, you’ll see the boulders’ erosion lines that make them look like sandwiches piled on top of each other.

That’s why the island is also called The Sandwich Island, but there’s more! Antonia Beach is often the recommended lunch stopover for island-hopping tours.

It used to be called Isla Bonita, but it was changed to Tinagong Dagat, which means “hidden beach.” This secluded beach is dubbed the Little Boracay of Iloilo since Boracay Island is the most famous white-sand island beach destination in the Philippines.

Tinagong Dagat is one of the white sand beaches in the Philippines . Its crystal clear waters and big stones are perfect for cliff-jumping.

This is another social media-famous Iloilo tourist spot. The word tangke means tank. The locals call it such because of the gap between two large boulders, which forms an opening during low tide.

You can visit this hidden, natural saltwater lagoon and swim in its clear, shallow waters. Locals believe that the deep pool is the home of engkantos (mythical environmental spirits).

Tourists are often told to keep the noise level and activities at a minimum to not disturb the spirits.

After all that island-hopping, swimming, and feasting on scallops and oysters, do something that’s more physically challenging: explore the Pawikan Cave! No, it’s not a secret hiding place for the pawikan (sea turtles). The cave got its name because of the massive rock formations here that look like pawikan eggs.

From the jump-off point in Barangay Lantanga, the trek takes about 1 hour to the cave’s entrance. From there, you’re greeted with unbelievable rock formations and brightly lit atriums. It’s a bit eerie for some people.

Tour guides advise keeping the noise level down so you won't disturb the elements or spirits that are said to be living there.

The original, Spanish-built lighthouse is gone. The one you’ll see here is the more modern one that was built by the Japanese. Still, the views from the top of the Gigantes Island Lighthouse are one of the best there is. Going here is like a trip back in time.

There’s the abandoned, old Spanish building and the vines that have taken on the ruins. It’s dramatic and nostalgic at the same time, definitely a must-visit during your Gigantes Islands tour.

Garin Farm in San Joaquin, Iloilo

Garin Farm in San Joaquin is another well-photographed Iloilo tourist spot. It's an in-land resort that uniquely combines recreational, religious, and agricultural activities. You can kayak, swim, fish, and ride the zipline here.

You can check out the pilgrimage site, where nine biblical scenes, including Noah’s Ark and the Garden of Eden, are depicted as life-size dioramas.

To reach the majestic white cross that stands atop a hill, you need to climb the 456-step staircase. The summit is a great place to reflect and pray.

At the summit, you’ll find the entrance to the Divine Mercy Dark Meditation Tunnel that leads to what is probably the most photographed part of Garin Farm: the so-called Heaven On Earth.

The dark tunnel symbolizes one’s challenges while on Earth, and the all-white and blindingly bright Heaven On Earth represents a person’s ascent to heaven after cleansing.

Book a  tour in Garin Farm  so you can try to maximize your trip. The place is accessible via both private and public transportation. The best time to go here is either very early in the morning or just before sunset.

Molo Church, also called the female church in Iloilo City

The province of Iloilo is filled with historical and ancestral homes that show travelers a glimpse of how the wealthy families lived back then, as well as centuries-old churches that survived natural and human-made disasters.

Today, you can visit these ancestral homes and churches by joining a pilgrimage excursion .

If you want to see statues of Greek gods and goddesses across a Catholic church, visit the Molo Church along San Pedro Street in Iloilo City. This so-called “female church” dates back to 1831.

The exterior walls are made of white coral rock. In 1992, Molo Church officially became a national landmark.

Interestingly, you’ll find statues of Greek deities at the Molo Plaza, which is right across this Spanish-colonial Catholic Church. Both the Molo Church and Molo Plaza are top Iloilo tourist spots today.

To get to the church, hop on a jeepney with Arevalo or Molo routes. The best time to try  Molo Church tours  is during sunset and then continue with a stroll at Molo Plaza.

Jaro Cathedral, one of Iloilo's oldest churches

Jaro Cathedral is one of Iloilo's oldest churches with a long, colorful history. Also known as the Church of St. Elizabeth of Hungary and National Shrine of Our Lady of the Candles, the cathedral is lovingly called by the locals as simply Jaro Cathedral.

It first started as a small parish back in 1587. As the years went by, it became a cathedral, and today, it is a national shrine that serves as the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Jaro.

The church was destroyed by an earthquake back in 1948 and was rebuilt in 1956. In 1976, Jaro Cathedral was declared a historical landmark.

Interestingly, the Jaro Cathedral is called the “male church,” while the Molo Church, which is also in Iloilo, is called the “female church.” The churches got their nicknames because of the saints displayed there.

Jaro Cathedral has male saints standing inside the church pillars, while Molo Church features female saints. Many people, especially locals, believe that the church's 400-year-old image of Mother and Child is miraculous.

You can find the Jaro Cathedral along the busy Plaza Rizal Street in Jaro. The best time to visit this during your day trip in Iloilo  is early in the morning or just before evening as the town winds down.

While you’re there, check out the nearby bell tower called the Campanario de Jaro, which is another famous Iloilo landmark.

La Paz Batchoy, a clear noodle soup with pork cracklings, beef, chicken stock, and round noodles

The province of Iloilo is famous as the home of La Paz Batchoy, a clear noodle soup with pork cracklings, beef, chicken stock, and round noodles. The most popular places to eat batchoy are Netong's, Deco’s, Ted's, and Inggo’s.

You may go on an Iloilo food trip and judge for yourself which among them serves the tastiest.

Batchoy's side dishes are pandesal (a Filipino bread) and puto (steamed rice cake). You can buy them or dip them in the broth. If you want, you can order more side dishes at a minimum cost.

Add a little pepper and soy sauce to the soup, mix well and enjoy. You can ask for a refill if you finish your soup quickly. Joining a food trip in Iloilo will make this experience even better.

Miagao Church along Zulueta Avenue in Miagao is probably the most visually appealing, age-old church in the province of Iloilo. Also known as the Church of Saint Thomas of Villanova, its construction was completed in 1797.

Today, it is one of the most unique Iloilo tourist spots and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site , listed as one of the top examples of a Baroque-style church.

It is also famous for the detailed, artistic sculptures that adorn its facade, which showcase a unique mix of Spanish, Muslim, and Chinese traditions, influences, and elements.

Above its ornate wooden doors is the image of the town's patron saint, St. Thomas of Villanueva.

Getting to Miagao Church is pretty straightforward. Take a jeepney bound for Miagao from Iloilo City. The church is about 45 minutes away from the city proper.

They are experts in producing biscocho, the twice-baked, butter-coated, sugar-coated small loaves of bread. It's great to tickle the palate with coffee in the afternoon or even with a bowl of hot soup.

  • Manila to Iloilo flights
  • Cebu to Iloilo flights

Because of its long tradition of being a favorite snack for generations, Filipinos also relate this pastry to their loved ones' fond memories.

Also, the original Biscocho Haus offers a variety of pasalubong products, such as butterscotch, which is another best seller.

There are also various types of fruit tarts, assorted slices of bread, banana chips, muscovado pieces of bread, tableas, and even numerous chicharon variants.

Molo Mansion which belonged to a wealthy family in Iloilo

This prominent mansion belonged to a noble and wealthy family in Iloilo. Built in the 1920s, the Yusay-Consing Mansion, which is commonly known as the Molo Mansion, was once thought to be beyond repair.

But today, it’s open to the public as a heritage attraction. Spend an afternoon here and marvel at the details of Filipino colonial architecture.

There are several stores here selling export quality Philippines souvenirs and clothing, particularly those featuring the Ilonggo heritage.

  • See Molo Mansion on this  Iloilo museums & art tour

After a short tour, you can head to the Molo Mansion Café, located behind the mansion, and enjoy local Ilonggo dishes like Pancit Molo with kinihad (toasted bread).

Do try the intriguing buko ternate shake, a blue drink made with coconut meat and juice and served in a green coconut shell. Its signature blue color comes from the bluish ternate flower.

The historic Molo Mansion stands just across the St. Anne Parish or Molo Church . There are a lot of tours you can join to maximize your time here, or you can hop on a jeepney bound for Molo or Arevalo.

Pancit Molo in Iloilo, Philippines

It originated from the seaport in the Philippine town of Molo. The Chinese tradesmen introduced wonton soup to the area, and local people started to call it Pancit Molo. Perhaps because there was no word for wonton, they likened it to pancit (noodles).

Tita Paz House of Pancit Molo is said to be the source of the famous soup. The restaurant shares a room with the Molo County Bakeshop, where residents can also buy gifts from Iloilo.

Kap Ising Pancit Molo is also one spot that locals love going to. Kap Ising's is said to have Pancit Molo's most exquisite taste in the region.

11. Have a Food Trip at Tatoy’s Manokan

One of Iloilo's best restaurants is Tatoy's Manokan. This popular restaurant was founded in the 1970s and was originally a three-table nipa shack. Tatoy was a fisherman, but he had the skills to cook them into tasty dishes.

Tatoy’s is best known for its lechon manok (roasted chicken). Tatoy's chicken is marinated in native vinegar and calamansi with stuffed tamarind leaves and lemongrass. It has a rich, juicy, and savoy flavor that needs no sauce.

Tatoy's also offers a wide variety of delicious seafood dishes. They have fresh scallops cooked with butter and garlic, grilled fish, kinilaw (ceviche), and stuffed squid.

There’s a large glass-covered table where a selection of mouthwatering meals is presented. They provide fresh mango, coconut shake, and coconut juice.

One of the most popular tourist spot in Iloilo

A high-end resort called Sicogon Island made this part of Iloilo famous during the 70s and 80s. Today, there are two resorts on the island: Huni Resort and Balay Kogon . A third one is opening soon.

The island is still a popular Iloilo tourist spot because of its forests, mountains, and beaches where the sand has a light yellow or orange tone.

The Barangay Buaya Beach is believed to be the best swimming spot on the entire island. Teeming with nipa huts and tall coconut trees, it’s one of the best Iloilo beaches where you can unwind in peace.

If you want to snorkel, head to Tumaguin Island, but if you're going to do some hiking, you can take on the 1- to 2-hour hike toward the summit of Mount Opao.

Near the central part of the beach are some cottages that are available for tourists who plan to stay overnight.

13. Appreciate Heritage at Camiña Balay nga Bato

Camiña Balay nga Bato is one of Iloilo’s most prominent landmarks. The complex is still home to the 4th generation Melocoton-Avancena family.

When visiting the old house, visitors are also welcome to visit the Antiques and Souvenir Shop named the Lola Rufina Heritage Curio Shop.

Saint figures crafted in red bricks, pictures, and textiles are just some of the rarer objects here. The wide staircase reveals a century-old Spanish style, where visitors are told to ascend sideways.

  • Visit Camiña Balay nga Bato on this  Iloilo City food tour

When guests reach the second floor, you’ll see the Oratorio or prayer room, the Grand Sala, and the restaurant.

In their bright, balcony dining room and casual dining room, Camiña Balay nga Bato serves you Iloilo's finest Pancit Molo and hot chocolate.

The Pancit Molo dish originated from the kitchen of the local legend Kapitan Ising. Every dumpling has a smooth tasty broth and rich filling of pork, chicken, and shrimp.

Iloilo River Esplanade is where you can find the big “I Am Iloilo” signage

Go here if you want to see Iloilo City’s effort to protect the Iloilo River and promote a healthier, active lifestyle among its people. The Iloilo River Esplanade is where you can find the big “I Am Iloilo” signage. It’s both a lively and peaceful spot to jog, stroll, or take in the view.

Locals sometimes call it merely the Esplanade, and it’s easily accessible by both jeepneys and taxis.

It’s the best starting point to kick off your walking tours because it’s near many Iloilo tourist spots like the Molo Church and Molo Plaza. The best times to go here are early morning and early evening.

The Esplanade stretches from Diversion Road to Carpenter's Bridge, linking Molo and Mandurriao neighborhoods. The Esplanade is a great place to visit, providing entertainment and amazing views of the Iloilo River and the sunset.

Casa Mariquit is a must-see well-preserved historic house in Iloilo. The house has been passed down through generations.

It became the residence of Mariquit Javellana Lopez, the granddaughter of banker Ramón Javellana, and her husband Fernando Lopez Sr., the former Vice President of the Philippines.

The word “mariquit” comes from the Tagalog word marikit which means beautiful, most likely referring to both the lady of the house and the house itself.

A Casa Mariquit excursion will take you around the property: the master bedroom, the former bank vault that Ramon Javellana used during his banker days, and the many furniture and memorabilia that belongs to the family spanning generations.

Unlike other ancestral homes in Iloilo, Casa Mariquit doesn't have sprawling lawns. It's also not as grand as it looks. But the furniture and political campaign paraphernalia here speak volumes about its history.

16. Drink Coffee at Madge Café

The fresh coffee is the thing that distinguishes Madge from other coffee shops. The coffee beans come from the north and the provinces of Iloilo and Guimaras.

In comparison with traditional coffee shops, the brew here is produced using a flavor sieve at Madge's, which keeps coffee beans and helps the savors to grow with any additional layer of grain.

Madge Café is one of the oldest coffee shops in Iloilo. It was founded in 1951 by Vicente De la Cruz. Initially, the shop sold halo-halo. Once Vicente realized that demand was seasonal, he chose to focus on coffee, which was his passion first and foremost.

Vicente and his wife, Magdalena, managed the business until they passed it on to their son, Gerardo. Along with his wife Julieta, they managed the cafe until he passed away. The family business was then passed down to Peter De la Cruz, his son.

Customers can choose what kind of coffee they like best. There are choices for strong coffee at a very affordable price with and without milk.

A different process appears to exist for each type, but only Madge's barista knows the secret. The coffee is best served in combination with puto (steamed rice cake).

There are many heritage homes in Iloilo, and if you want to see the so-called Queen of Heritage Houses in Iloilo, head to Jaro and go on a tour inside the Vicente Lopez Heritage House. It is also known as Mansion de Lopez or Nelly’s Gardens and dates back to 1928.

The house was named after Nelly Lopez y Hofileña, the eldest daughter of the local couple Don Vicente Lopez and Doña Elena Hofileña. Its aristocratic roots are evident in its grand architecture, and because of its beauty and history, it was declared as a National Historic Landmark.

It’s easily accessible by riding taxicabs or jeepneys. You can also join a guided trip  for a hassle-free trip to this heritage house.

Calle Real is one of Iloilo’s busiest and most iconic streets. It’s a highly photographed historic building in the city of Iloilo, and you’ve probably seen it in some travel magazines.

Also known as J.M. Basa Street, it is lined with Spanish-era and Commonwealth buildings, some dating back to the 1800s.

People sometimes call it Heritage Street because the province's elite families once inhabited most of the buildings and homes here. It is easily accessible by jeepneys, and the majority of the tours in Iloilo include this stopover.

Many structures are built on one or two levels. On the first level, you can find shops, and on the second floor, you can find the residences of Iloilo’s elite families.

In 2000, the municipal government adopted the regional Cultural Preservation Ordinance to protect and prevent any harm to the structures.

Now, many buildings have already been repaired and beautified due to the contributions of the local government and private sectors.

The striking Lizares Mansion in Tabuc Suba, Jaro, has witnessed a series of tragic events, including the torture of Filipinos during World War II.

If you want to see how the noble and wealthy families of Iloilo lived during the colonial times, don’t miss this beautiful but also sad reminder of the province’s past.

Filipino sugar baron Don Emiliano Lizares built the 3-story mansion in 1937 for his wife, Conchita Gamboa. During the war, the Lizares family fled to Pototan, Iloilo, to hide.

The Japanese imperial army used the mansion as headquarters and its basement as a torture ground. After the war, the Lizares family moved back, but the once beautiful villa became a living reminder of tragic times.

When the patriarch died, the mansion was transformed into a casino before it was sold to the Dominicans in 1962. After its renovation, the Lizares Mansion now serves as the church of the Angelicum School Iloilo that also stands inside the Lizares compound.

When you’re in Iloilo, you ride a taxicab or a jeepney, which is an accessible mode of public transportation in the Philippines, and see the white mansion along McArthur Drive in Tabuc Suba, Jaro.

Tourists can join tours and see the intricate rooms and details of its rich past. The best time to visit is during the Christmas season, when the whole mansion is adorned with holiday lights.

View of pan de acuzar in Iloilo

The town of Concepcion is blessed with one of the most scenic seascapes in the whole province of Iloilo. Forming a safe, natural harbor for Concepcion Bay are 16 islands connected by azure waters and abundant marine life.

It’s not as popular as Gigantes Islands, but the islands, islets, and beaches here are just as beautiful. You can go island hopping or beach-hopping between Malangabang Island and Sandbar, Agho Island, Bulubadiangan Island, and Sipol Island.

You can swim, snorkel, free dive, and scuba dive at the beaches in Concepcion Islands. You can trek Mt. Pan de Acuzar, which is also called Mt. Manaphag, Panay’s tallest peak.

Consider this as a challenge because Pan de Acuzar is the Philippines’ steepest mountain! After your trek, you can visit the Concepcion Island’s Spanish-style lighthouse that goes back to the colonial era on Calabaza Island.

This tourist spot in San Joaquin, Iloilo, is a far cry from the shores of the Gigantes Islands. Instead of powdery white sand, the sand in the 2-hectare Kuliatan Marine Sanctuary is dark and mostly made up of crushed corals.

But what makes this beach truly special is what you can see under the waters.

As the name suggests, it is a marine sanctuary. Snorkel here and discover the many corals and sea creatures swimming under the sea. You can also enjoy the beach facilities aside from the marine sanctuary or stay at one of the cottages or huts overnight.

Make sure to bring enough food and beverages when you plan on staying overnight as most small restaurants within the area are closed during off-peak hours. Most of all, keep the area clean and dispose garbage properly.

If you want to take a break from the back-to-back Iloilo beaches and island-hopping tours, you can swim in the calm waters of Nadsadjan Falls in Igbaras, Iloilo. At 100 feet tall, the rains fall beautifully to the natural swimming pool below. It’s one of the most relaxing tourist spots in Iloilo.

There are different types and sizes of trees and rocks along the path. Some stones are higher than usual, rough and hard, so be careful when trekking.

The Nadsadjan Falls is accessible by public transport, typically via a jeepney bound for Igbaras from Iloilo City. From the town proper, you need to take another jeepney to Barangay Passi. After a 45-minute trek, you’ll be rewarded with the majestic waters of the Nadsadjan Falls.

23. Try Roberto’s Siopao

One of the must-try food in Iloilo is Roberto’s Siopao. This household name is only available in Calle Real’s heritage district and cannot be bought anywhere else. The flavors of their siopao is so exceptional, it smells and tastes incredibly good without any sauce.

Their bestselling siopao, Queen Siopao is a mixture of pork adobo, bacon, Chinese sausage and egg. It gets sold out fast, which is why most of its patronizers line up early in the morning.

King Siopao is also a crowd favorite because of its hefty servings of pork adobo, egg, chicken and Chinese sausage. You may also try their regular and jumbo servings! It’s a great pasalubong for your friends and family back home.

Bucari Pine Forest in Iloilo

Bucari is known as the “Little Baguio” of Iloilo. Many tourists go here to cool off during the dry summer season in the Philippines.

Among its many highlands attractions, the Bucari Pine Forest and Campsite is a top favorite. Surrounded by towering pine trees, people go here to have picnics and enjoy the fresh mountain breeze.

When you see the mountain views, all your concerns will surely be forgotten. Drink a cup of coffee and appreciate the scenery with your friends and family.

In the evening, you can watch fireflies, which provide a magical moment in addition to the chilly weather. If you plan to stay overnight, like with any other camping tour, make sure to have your warm clothes ready and an insect repellent ready to prevent mosquito bites.

Iloilo has a rich heritage, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty. From Spanish-era grandeur to pristine beaches, this island gem offers something for every traveler. So, ditch the generic tourist traps and delve into Iloilo’s unique charm with this informative blog post.

Immerse Yourself in Iloilo’s Heritage

Jaro cathedral: a testament to faith and architecture.

Jaro Cathedral, formally known as the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Candles, is a monumental piece of Iloilo’s history.

Built-in 1864, this Baroque-style cathedral has undergone several renovations, incorporating Gothic elements. It’s not just an architectural marvel; the cathedral is deeply embedded in the spiritual fabric of the city.

One of the cathedral’s unique features is the all-male collection of statues, except the Lady of the Candles.

This 400-year-old image is believed to be miraculous and is the focal point of the annual Jaro Fiesta every February 2. Notably, the cathedral had the honor of hosting Blessed Pope John Paul II in 1981, further cementing its spiritual significance.

Molo Church: A Fusion of Cultures

Molo Church, officially St. Anne Parish Church, is renowned for its Gothic-Renaissance architecture, a rare sight outside Manila. This church is unique due to its two rows of sixteen female saints, earning it the nickname “female church.”

Built-in the 19th century, Molo Church showcases a two-level façade, Romanesque features, and intricately carved wooden retablos.

The church also boasts shallow arches illuminating the nave, creating a solemn ambiance. Its bell towers, each housing thirty bells, add to the church’s majestic aura.

The combination of architectural styles and the focus on female saints make Molo Church a must-visit destination in Iloilo.

Casa Mariquit: A Window into Iloilo’s Past

Casa Mariquit, a 200-year-old ancestral house, offers a glimpse into the life of the elite in the 18th century.

Casa Mariquit

Built by banker Ramon Javellana as a bank and residence, this house became home to his granddaughter, Maria “Mariquit” Javellana.

The house, named after her, is filled with memorabilia, including old cameras, paintings, and furniture.

The house’s architecture, with its original red bricks and wooden structures, is a testament to Iloilo’s rich cultural heritage.

Visitors can explore the master bedroom, dining room, and family chapel, each adorned with antique items.

The secret vault under the wooden floor planks is a fascinating feature, revealing the banking history of the Javellana family. Casa Mariquit is a historical site and a well-preserved piece of Iloilo’s past.

Enhance Your Experience: Book a Guided Heritage Tour

I highly recommend booking a guided heritage tour to appreciate these historical landmarks’ depth and breadth fully.

These tours offer insightful narratives that breathe life into the walls of these ancient structures, providing context to their historical significance.

From the majestic Jaro Cathedral to the enchanting Casa Mariquit, each site on the tour deepens one’s appreciation for Iloilo’s rich cultural tapestry.

These tours inform and transform your visit into an immersive journey through time.

Strolling Down Calle Real

Calle Real, officially known as J.M. Basa Street, is a historical gem in the heart of Iloilo City. This iconic street, often called the “Escolta of Iloilo,” is a picturesque blend of American-era neoclassical, Beaux-Arts, and Art Deco buildings.

Calle Real

Walking down Calle Real is like taking a step back in time. I was fascinated by the architectural marvels that lined the street, each telling its story of Iloilo’s rich past.

The road buzzes with life, hosting art galleries and quaint cafes perfect for leisure. For an immersive experience, I recommend renting a bike or joining a walking tour to appreciate Calle Real’s beauty and history fully.

The Scenic Iloilo River Esplanade

Next on my journey was the Iloilo River Esplanade, a testament to the city’s commitment to urban renewal and environmental conservation. This beautifully designed promenade offers a serene escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.

Iloilo Esplanade

I took a leisurely walk along the esplanade, enjoying the lush greenery and the tranquil views of the Iloilo River. The area is perfect for jogging, cycling, or simply unwinding.

I was particularly impressed by the community’s efforts in transforming a once-polluted riverbank into a vibrant and eco-friendly public space. The esplanade is not just a recreational area; it’s a symbol of Iloilo’s resilience and dedication to sustainable living.

Shopping and Dining at SM City Iloilo

For a more contemporary experience, I visited SM City Iloilo. This sprawling mall is a one-stop shopping, dining, and entertainment destination. It caters to all shopping preferences with a mix of international brands and local boutiques.

The food scene here is vibrant, offering a range of cuisines that reflect the city’s culinary diversity. I enjoyed a delightful meal at one of the local restaurants, savoring the flavors of Iloilo’s rich culinary heritage.

Dear jobelle,

The nerve to tell me not to visit iloilo. Who are you? The mayor? Girl of informal settler mentality.

My suggestions are not idiotic, in fact some of them are being considered. I am wishing iloilo to become progressive and economically stable so that people like us need not go placesto look for work and instead go back to iloilo and get the same opportunity in the place we were born, raised and got our education. Learn to respect the comments of others that were posted in positive ways. You remind me of my days in iloilo that their are people of mentality.. The nerve of you!

We should not be docile from the dictates of other people especially not coming from Iloilo , we are better left without those Shangrila , Piers , Mansions , Giant Statue of Aquino and then worship those places … thanks jobelle

Iloilo City Travel Guide

Iloilo City is the economic and cultural center of Panay Island. At several points in history, it acted as the capital of the Philippines during the Spanish colonial period. This explains why there are a lot of historic churches and buildings in the city. In fact, it has gained a reputation as an Emerging Museum City because of its heritage structures and art museums.

Iloilo City also has a huge value among religious people. It was one of the first American colonial outposts in the early 1900s and is home to many Protestant congregations. For example, Central Philippine University, the first Baptist church in the country, can be found here. The Jaro Adventist Center, the first organized Adventist church in the Philippines, is also in Iloilo City.

Iloilo is also renowned all over the Philippines for its efforts to be sustainable. The city has many open spaces, gardens, and parks that people can visit. Iloilo City has also been praised for its efforts to have sustainable urban planning and maintain air quality. The gorgeous Iloilo River Esplanade is proof of these efforts, which straddles both sides of the Iloilo River.

In this Travel Guide to Iloilo City Blog, we listed some tips for making your DIY trip to Iloilo. We also included Iloilo City Itinerary, Things to do and see, how to get there, and more.

The Paraw Regatta, held every February, also attracts many people worldwide. It is Asia’s oldest traditional boat sailing event, where colorful sailboats dot the Iloilo Strait.

Seizing the Philippines’ tourism potential

iloilo tourist spots 2023

The Philippines is among the top tourist destinations in the world, making tourism a major contributor to its economy. In 2023 , the tourism sector posted an 8.6% contribution to the Philippine Gross Domestic Product. The number not only show tourism’s impact, but it also affirms the potential of the Philippines as a prime hub for meetings, incentive travel, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) tourism industry.

Expanding horizons with MICE The MICE industry is geared towards planning, organizing, and implementing business events.

Leveraging its status as an outstanding travel hotspot, the Philippines has been actively positioning itself as a premier destination for MICE. Aside from its popular tourism offerings, the country is also home to numerous convention centers located in strategic areas across the nation. May it be for small groups or large-scale receptions, organizers and venue seekers have many options ready for the task.

Some MICE destinations that the Philippines has to offer include Manila, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Bacolod, Clark, and the Subic Bay Freeport. These hotspots offer exceptional tourism products and services, as well as vast opportunities for business. Not only that, they also have consistently growing local economies that attract investors.

Other localities are also working hard to seize opportunities in the MICE industry. For instance, Iloilo has been gaining ground by building roads, a modern airport, and multiple commerce spaces in the last two decades. In 2015, it established the Iloilo Convention Center, fostering the growth of the MICE industry in the city.

Tourism Promotions Board Chief Operating Officer Maria Margarita Montemayor Nograles delivers a message during MICECON 2024 opening ceremony.

Central Luzon is not one to get left behind. In fact, the recently concluded Philippine MICE Conference 2024 (MICECON 2024) was held at the SMX Convention Center Clark in Pampanga from July 10 to 12. Following the theme “MICE XD: Xperience Diversified”, the event underscored the significance of technology, inclusion, and diversity in shaping the industry’s future.  Subject experts led discussions and covered topics including artificial intelligence, crisis recovery and reputation management, inclusive event planning, digital marketing and the appeal of in-person experiences, as well as training and upskilling of the tourism workforce.

Spotlight on Clark This is the second time that Clark hosted the prestigious convention. In her opening message , Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco said: "Clark’s selection as the host of MICECON 2024 is a recognition of its readiness and potential as a premier MICE destination. The Clark Freeport Zone’s accessibility, state-of-the-art conference venues, and comprehensive support services are very well prepared to welcome all the participants of MICECON 2024.”

iloilo tourist spots 2023

It first hosted the event in 2014, an experience which planted the possibilities for its economic future with tourism and MICE. Poised as the ultimate tourism destination in Central Luzon, the 4,400-hectare Clark Freeport Zone was developed with business and tourism as its primary goals.

Location played an important role in its positioning as a prime MICE hub. Strategically situated only 80 kilometers north of Metro Manila, Clark is accessible via the North Luzon Expressway. It also serves as a gateway to Northern and Central Luzon via the Clark International Airport, which currently flies to ten international and six domestic destinations. Being only two to four hours away via air travel to other major Asian destinations, this aerotropolis is also a natural entry point to the Asia Pacific Region.

Infrastructure-wise, Clark is home to an assortment of facilities that are up-to-spec for high-end and IT-enabled industries, aviation, logistics enterprises, and tourism—including MICE. It currently has 80 convention or meeting facilities, 3,608 rooms and villas, and 146 dining establishments. To improve Clark’s portfolio, expansion of existing facilities and construction of new ones are either being planned or already in progress. A train system connecting Clark to its adjacent regions is also underway.

Clark today is the result of years of careful planning and painstaking work by everyone who collaborated for its development—the locals, the government, and the public and private sectors. A showcase of success, Clark leads the way for other localities that also hold the potential to succeed with MICE.

Go for MICE For our local economies, the MICE industry brings employment opportunities, profit, and business growth. But more importantly in the grander scheme of things, it helps put the Philippines in the global spotlight, opening more opportunities for international trade, as well as knowledge and technology exchanges.

According to Grand View Research, a market research and consulting company based in India and the US, the Asia-Pacific MICE market in 2023 was valued at $183.47 billion, and projections expect it to grow 10% by 2030. This shows that there is much to gain from developing the Philippines’ capability to host the MICE sector.

Acknowledging its valuable contributions, Tourism Secretary Frasco emphasized: "By positioning the Philippines as a premier MICE destination, we foster economic growth and provide invaluable opportunities for our people.”

With sufficient support and collaboration between stakeholders, the future is bright for the Philippines as a premier MICE destination.

M.I.C.E.CON is organized by the Tourism Promotions Board, an attached agency of the Department of Tourism, that is tasked to promote the Philippines as a world-class tourism and MICE destination.
