Award-winning comic Janey Godley has announced her cancer treatment ‘is back on the cards’ ahead of her tour early next year , which she still intends to do to ‘go out with a bang’.

The Glasgow comedian had been given the all clear earlier this year , but announced on Tuesday that a recent scan showed signs of the disease in her abdomen.

In a heartfelt video message on Twitter, Janey told her fans the news, but insisted her Not Dead Yet gigs will still go ahead, with dates set in February and March.

She did, however, say her next tour will likely be the last time she is able to perform live.

‘My recent scan and my blood tests showed that my cancer marker went up,’ the 61-year-old explained.

‘There’s still a bit of evidence of disease in my abdomen. So I want you all to know that I’ll be going through some more chemotherapy.

‘I also want you to know that I’m going ahead with the tour in February and March. I am determined to get back on stage. I’ve been a kind of die on your feet, know your knees [sic] type of person’.

‘I’m looking forward to the tour, I think it’s fair and honest to say it might be the last time you see me live on stage. I’m hoping it’s not, but I think it’s a fair estimation.’

She then encouraged fans to join her for the ‘fabulous’ shows as she reminded them that her stage three ovarian cancer diagnosis ‘wasn’t curable’ but only ‘treatable’.

‘I don’t want to just fade away, I want to go out with a bang. Are you ready to see me go out with a bang? Cos I am!’ she added.

Janey, who praised her specialists and medical team, received her diagnosis in November 2021 and has since undergone chemotherapy treatment and a full hysterectomy .

‘Good luck Janey- we are pulling for you!!!!’ commented tennis star Martina Navratilova under her latest post.

Singer-songwriter Curtis Stigers shared: ‘I love ya Janey! You are one tough chick.’

Janey Godley ‘Not Dead Yet’ Tour

Janey Godley is ‘still alive, by popular demand’ and will be bringing her, emotive and hilarious brand-new show, ‘Not Dead Yet’ to England, following her recent sell-out tour of Scotland.

There will be voiceovers and anecdotes, straight from the woman wouldn’t die or shut up. Join Janey as she’s back, and doing what she does best! A few words from Janey:

“ The past few years has been like a giant “Wordle” game that has swept the nation, I went from “cancel to cancer” in 6 weeks. No, I didn’t smack a man live at the Oscars, in front of millions of people, but I have apologised profusely for historic offensive tweets from over 11 years ago and ended up as the torn worn out pass the parcel for tribal politics in Scotland. All my own doing, but now it’s time to laugh, live and celebrate after dealing this dreadful disease.

I suffered severe mental illness during the online onslaught and whilst on my tour in 2021, I found a giant tumour in my ovary giblets and had to FIGHT to stay alive. Never one for the conventional path in life, I am still NOT DEAD YET and bringing my tour back on the road. So many stories of heart-warming love and outpouring of support to the occasional daily messages hoping I might die soon because … well I am a woman who answered back. ”

Fighting Ovarian Cancer

  • Janey Godley, 61, isn’t giving up after her ovarian cancer’s return and has vowed to do her Not Dead Yet tour in February and March 2023.
  • The Scottish stand-up comedian was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in November 2021 and given the “all clear” this past summer. However, the cancer has returned as it was recently found in her abdomen, she explained this week.
  • In order to better understand this disease, we've put together an entire section of information featuring top experts, which you can find here .
  • And for anyone fighting cancer, SuvivorNet has put up a clinical trial search tool specially designed for you. You may see new results over the course of several days as new clinical trials are added daily. You can also use clinicaltrials.gov , which is the national registry of trials, but it's vast and a bit hard to navigate.
  • Ovarian cancer symptoms can often go overlooked. Experts urge that women know their own bodies better than anyone. So if you feel like something just isn't right it's a good idea to see your primary care physician, especially if you have any lingering symptoms such as a bloated belly or feeling full easily.

The cancer warrior, who has been battling the disease with humor and positivity , promised her fans in a video shared on Twitter this week that her Not Dead Yet Tour will begin in February 2023.

Janey's Ovarian Cancer Battle

For Janey's ovarian cancer treatment, she also had to undergo a hysterectomy, a surgical procedure that removes the uterus. In addition to the physical loss of the womb, the emotional repercussions can sometimes also be extensive.

Related:  Woman Has Hysterectomy At Age 22 After Her 'Irritable Bowel Syndrome' Turned Out to be Ovarian Cancer

Janey's cancer was stage 3, so she needed to start treatment right away, but eventually had to have that mandatory surgery as well. What matters, however, is that she found her cancer in time, as ovarian cancer is often difficult to diagnose.

Initially, Janey was suffering from a bloated stomach, back and stomach pain, frequent urination, and lack of appetite.

"A patient can feel relatively normal and suddenly wake up with abdominal distension and symptoms that are related to ovarian cancer," Dr. Jeanne M. Schilder, a gynecologic oncologist at Indiana University Medical Center, tells SurvivorNet.

A good rule of thumb is to go get checked out for any lingering symptoms that don't get better over the course of a couple of weeks.

Women know their own bodies better than anyone. So if you feel like something just isn't right it's a good idea to see your primary care physician, at least to start. Your doctor should get your medical history and the symptoms you're concerned about, and do a physical exam."

As with any type of cancer, the earlier that you can get a diagnosis, the better off you will be.

Janie got the "all clear" this summer, which led her to grow her locks into a short, white 'do. However, the cancer was recently found in her abdomen and she’s now undergoing more treatment.

Ovarian Cancer Overview

Ovarian cancer has been called the "cancer that whispers," because women often don't experience symptoms until their cancer has already reached its late stages. The symptoms that do appear at first are hard to identify as cancer. This subtlety of symptoms makes it essential for women to know the warning signs, and report them to their doctor, SurvivorNet's experts warn.

The term ovarian cancer refers to a number of different tumors that grow in the ovary. The ovaries produce the sex hormone, estrogen, as well as eggs. Every woman has two ovaries, one on either side of her uterus. The fallopian tube picks up the egg from the ovary and carries it to the uterus for fertilization.

Diagnosing ovarian cancer and making a treatment plan.

Many ovarian cancers actually begin in the fallopian tubes. A few cancerous cells first grow on the fallopian tubes and then, as the fallopian tubes brush over the ovary, these cells stick to the ovaries and eventually grow to form a tumor.

There isn't just one ovarian cancer; there are many  different types  that occur at different stages of life. In fact, researchers have identified over 30 types, but these three are the most common:

  • Epithelial. About 90% of ovarian cancers are epithelial, which means the cancer cells are located on the outer layer of the ovary. Most epithelial tumors are not cancerous, but when they are cancerous, they can spread before they're detected.
  • Stromal. This rare type of tumor forms in the connective tissue that holds the ovary together and produces estrogen and progesterone.
  • Germ cell. These tumors, which develop in the cells that produce the eggs, are more likely to affect a single ovary, rather than both ovaries. When a teen or young woman is diagnosed with ovarian cancer, it's usually the germ cell type. The good news is that most women with these types of ovarian cancers can be cured.

Signs of Ovarian Cancer

In regards to ovarian cancer’s hard-to-detect symptoms, Dr. Beth Karlan , a gynecologic oncologist at UCLA Medical Center, previously explained in an interview, "What we've found from multiple studies, it's this constellation of symptoms.”

"If that's really happening and you're experiencing it every day, and they seem to be crescendo-ing, getting worse, even if that goes on for only two weeks, you should call your doctor."

Ovarian cancer symptoms may include:

  • Feeling full earlier/decrease in appetite
  • Feeling bloated
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Pain in the pelvis
  • Urinary symptoms, such as an urgent need to go
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Pain during sex

Ovarian Cancer: The Cancer That Whispers

Ovarian Cancer: The Stages

With ovarian cancer, chemotherapy is usually the first stage of treatment, but as far as staging your actual cancer? It's a little more difficult to tell until your doctor performs a surgery.

For ovarian cancer, gynecologic oncologists recommend a staging procedure after a diagnosis when they have evidence that the cancer may be early or limited, which has to do with the location of the tumor. Based on where the cancer is found, it will be assigned a stage.

How Do I Know The Stage of My Ovarian Cancer? Staging Surgery Determines Spread

We spoke with Dr. Amanda Fader , who further describes the notion of staging your ovarian cancer through surgery, that determines what, if any, cancer has spread.

"If it's remained in the ovary where it was initially found or developed, then the cancer is Stage 1," says Dr. Amanda Fader, vice chair of gynecologic surgical operations at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, tells SurvivorNet.

"But if the cancer has started to spread to other organs or through the lymph nodes to other parts of the body, then it would be identified as Stage 2, 3, or 4," Dr. Fader adds.

The Stages of Ovarian Cancer

  • Stage 1 :  The cancer is confined to the ovaries or fallopian tubes
  • Stage 2 :  The tumor involves one or both ovaries with extension to other pelvic tissues (or is a primary peritoneal cancer)
  • Stage 3 :  The cancer has spread outside of the pelvic peritoneum including to the outside of the bowel, liver and spleen and/or it involves the lymph nodes
  • Stage 4 :  There are distant metastases (outside of the pelvis and abdomen) or metastases to the inside of the spleen or liver

When doctors have evidence before the surgery, such as from imaging tests, that the tumor may be limited to the ovary, they will usually recommend a staging procedure. During that operation, doctors remove all or part of the ovary with the tumor and send itwhile the patient is still asleep on the operating tableto a pathologist who will examine the tissue and identify the type of tumor so doctors can decide how best to treat it.

If the tumor is determined to be benign, the surgery can end. Otherwise, more extensive surgery is usually performed. Prior to the surgery the patient and her doctor would have discussed the various possible findings, so that depending on the result of the ovarian biopsy, the surgeon knows what the patient's wishes are and how to proceed. "We would have made these decisions ahead of time through our preoperative counseling," explains Dr. Fader.

If the tumor is malignantovarian cancer"then we usually do a hysterectomy and remove the opposite ovary, too, in case it's involved with the cancer. We also remove the omentuman apron of fat in the abdomen. It has no known function, like the appendix, but can be involved in many ovarian cancer cases. And we'll do several biopsies around the abdomen and pelvis, including biopsies of the lymph nodes and peritoneum (the tissue lining of the abdomen)."

These biopsies will determine whether the cancer has spread and if so, how far.

How To Manage A Recurrence Of Ovarian Cancer

Eighty percent of women with ovarian cancer enter into remission. However, during the next five years, 70 to 80 percent of those women may have a "recurrence," when the cancer comes back, according to  Dr. Beth Karlan , a gynecologic oncologist at the UCLA Medical Center whose skill as a clinician is noted among her colleagues. The probability of recurrence is, without question, daunting, but there are exciting new options for treatment.

What Is Happening During a Recurrence?

To explain what's happening in your body in the most basic terms, recurrence often occurs because some cancer cells are left behind after treatment, and, over time, they grow larger. Your cancer may have specific features which means these cells just didn't respond well to treatment.

Women dealing with recurrence will likely need to go through chemotherapy or surgery again. And there may well be a decision to add a drug that cuts off the blood supply to tumors (Bevacizumab) or a class of drugs called PARP Inhibitors which help prevent cancer cells from repairing themselves at the genetic level.

According to Dr. Karlan, the type of treatment recommended for recurrence can depend on a number of factors:

  • The time period within which the cancer recurred
  • The kind of chemotherapy the woman underwent in the past
  • Side effects that came as a result of past treatments
  • The length of time between the last treatment the woman underwent and the recurrence
  • The specific mutations and molecular features of your cancer

If a woman's time in between remission and recurrence is more than six months then the ovarian cancer is categorized as "platinum-sensitive" (that is, responsive to a platinum-based chemotherapy treatment) and that patient will be treated with chemotherapy and another platinum-based drug.

Managing An Ovarian Cancer Recurrence

However, if the recurrence time happens less than six months into remission, the ovarian cancer is classified as "platinum-resistant." At that point, women are usually treated with another type of chemotherapy and encouraged to enter into a clinical trial. Alternatively, women might be platinum refractory, which refers to disease that grows while the patient is on chemotherapy and has a particularly poor prognosis.

Options for Recurrence- PARP Inhibitors

There is growing data to support the idea that PARP Inhibitors, the class of drug which inhibits cancer cells from repairing their DNA can benefit a wide swath of women. PARP inhibitors are especially beneficial for women who have genetic testing to discover that they have a mutation called BRCA.

Summary of PARP inhibitors Eligibility For Recurrence

For women with ovarian cancer who have had a recurrence and responded to platinum-based chemotherapy, Lynparza, Zejula and another PARP inhibitor called Rubraca (rucaparib) are FDA approved for use as a maintenance therapy, regardless of whether a woman has a BRCA mutation or HRD.

For some women who have had prior chemotherapy treatments, Rubraca, Zejula or Lynparza may also be options. These uses are based on factors such as number of prior therapies and BRCA mutation or HRD.

The different PARP inhibitors do have some varying side effects, which women and their doctors need to evaluate carefully. It's important to ask your doctor if he or she has experience managing the side of effects for the various PARPs. Some of these considerations are explained  here .

Other Tools to Fight Ovarian Cancer Recurrence

Oncologists can also use a tactic to determine if there is something called "microsatellite instability" in the tumor, which can indicate whether immunotherapy is an option, according to Karlan. Trying to activate the immune system to fight cancer through one of the approved immunotherapy drugs is not yet proving very effective for ovarian cancer, but there are interesting clinical trials going on which combine immunotherapy with other agents.

In the rounds of treatment after a recurrence, Karlan says that experienced doctors look at clinical trials to see if a woman's disease has some of the features which might make her a potential candidate for novel agents or combinations.

Participating in a clinical trial can provide benefits while also providing vital information to the entire scientific community about potential future treatments.

Repeated Treatment is Possible

Dr. Karlan explains that oncologists may well treat women whose cancer comes back "three, four five, six, seven or eight times" and often it's during treatment for their fifth or six recurrence that they might go back into remission.

This repeated treatment is possible as a result of a doctor's careful analysis of a woman's prior treatments, the time between treatments, and analysis of their tumors.

Probability of Recurrence

Determining the probability that a woman's cancer will recur depends on the stage at which they were originally diagnosed. According to most data, when diagnosed, women with stage one ovarian cancer have a 10 percent chance of recurrence, women in stage two have a 30 percent chance of recurrence and women in stage three have a 70 to 90 percent chance of recurrence. When your disease is given a stage four designation, unfortunately there is a 90 to 95 percent chance of recurrence.

Janey Godley: the not dead yet tour

janey godley tour 2022

My past year has been like a giant “Wordle” game that has swept the nation, I went from “cancel to cancer” in 6 weeks.

I suffered severe mental illness during the online onslaught and whilst on my last tour in 2021 found a giant tumour in my ovary giblets and had to FIGHT to stay alive. Never one for the conventional path in life, I am still NOT DEAD YET and bringing my tour back on the road. So many stories of heart-warming love and outpouring of support to the occasional daily messages hoping I might die soon because … well I am a woman who answered back.

There will be voiceovers and anecdotes, straight from the woman wouldn’t die or shut up. Come join me!

ARBROATH: Janey Godley kicks off what she says will probably be her last tour, after she undergoes a new round of treatment for the ovarian cancer she thought she beat. Despite the prognosis she said: ‘I am determined to get back on stage. I don’t want to just fade away. I want to go out with a bang.’ She said she had ‘always been a kind of "die on your feet not your knees" type of person’ , but added that it would be ‘fair and honest to say it might be the last time you’ll see me live on stage’. Although don’t go expecting anything maudlin from a comic used to laughing in the face of adversity. Janey Godley tour dates .

BIRMINGHAM: Facing the tough challenge of keeping up with real events - let alone staging a live puppet show - Spitting Image comes to the stage for the first time. In Idiots Assemble, which opens at the Birmingham Rep tonight, Tom Cruise is tasked by King Charles with saving Great Britain while Greta Thunberg duets with Stormzy as Putin and Xi watch on from their premium seats in the stalls. It’s been written by comics Al Murray and Matt Forde along with Sean Foley, the theatre’s artistic director who also directs this. Booking to March 11. Tickets

NORWICH: Following her Edinburgh Comedy Award winning show The Twist…? She’s Gorgeous - later turned into a Netflix special - New York’s Catherine Cohen embarks on her first tour of the UK. The show is described as ‘an openly glamorous, decidedly horny musical exploration of what it means to enter your thirties as a woman online, in love, and inspired to romanticise the prospect of freezing your eggs.’ After tonight’s Playhouse gig, she visits the Hackney Empire, the Lowry in Salford, Brighton Komedia, Glasgow Glee, Birmingham Old Rep and Leeds City Varieties.

LONDON: There’s a strong international bill at Laugh Train Home at the Four Thieves in Clapham tonight, with New York’s Janine Harouni , Yorkshire’s Scott Bennett , Vancouver’s Kate Barron and Peter Rethinasemay, born and raised in Belfast to a Malaysian father and Irish mother.

Friday February 3

CRICKHOWELL: Is this the world’s smallest comedy festival? The Black Mountains Comedy Festival comprises just two gigs in this picturesque town of 2,000 people: tonight’s headlined by Kiri Pritchard-McLean and tomorrow’s with Gary Delaney .

janey godley tour 2022

DATE / TIME: Sunday, November 10, 2024 - Monday, November 11, 2024 8:00 pm

Against all odds and filled with heaps of chemo Janey Godley returns this Autumn.

Controversy, cancellation, and cancer don’t always make the best comedy but in Janey’s hands this will be a dynamite of a gig.

The funny Scottish woman behind the voiceovers of Nicola Sturgeon during covid, is back on tour celebrating winning ‘The Billy Connolly, Spirit of Glasgow Comedy Award’.

Her feet are numb, and she has a lumpy hernia because of the cancer treatment, but she keeps going!

“I can’t believe I’m still alive” she says as many horrid trolls on twitter claim she’s faking cancer “if I was going to fake something it would have been the orgasms I keep having when I realise, they’re obsessed with me!” –  Janey

Voiceovers, comedy, and outrageous stories are on the menu. Don’t miss it. Book now!

“It’s one of those gigs, finally, that feels as much communion as comedy, as Godley’s audience seize the chance to see her and share in her stories.”  –  Guardian

“The type of act you want to catch again and again, year after year”  –  (One4Review)

Janey Godley has opened up about how her cancer diagnosis and treatment is impacting her husband.

The Glaswegian comedian, who was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2021, shared a heartbreaking story on Twitter about how her husband reacted.

Godley, 62, wrote on Monday night (15 May): “Walking with husband and pushing the wee dog in the pram through the West End. He stops, bends double, I thought he was being sick.

“He was crying. In the street. The man who stays quiet [saying] ‘I will miss you so much, just simple things like walking home after a coffee’. I hate cancer.”

She included a black-and-white photograph of herself having her hair shaved off by Storrie in the background. The couple have been married for many years and share daughter Ashley Storrie.

Comedian Janey Godley: How Jimmy Carr convinced me to get back on stage after my cancer diagnosis

Godley continued in a second tweet: “He has been so stoical – coming to every blood test, every scan, every chemo and always stays practical, helpful and keeps his fears to himself.

“He has autism so it’s not easy for him – but cancer is so hard on families.”

Many responded to her tweet to send her and her husband love and well wishes.

“Oh Janey, my heart is breaking for all of you. Your strength (his and Ashley’s too) is incredible. Hold on tight to each other,” one person wrote.

Another said: “Oh Janey, my heart breaks for you both. Anticipatory grief is so very painful indeed. I found (brief but vital) respite from it by staying grounded in the moment as much as I could. Much love and absolute solidarity.”

A third added: “Jeez, Janey. This broke me. It is so hard on all of you. Much love.”

Giving an update on her health, Godley said: “Cancer is a game of waiting/running and hiding for me. I got a clear scan and then it came back on my peritoneum (which is notoriously persistent) then I got weekly chemo and a clear scan but we know it’s coming back, we just don’t know when – I just wait to see in between living.

“I will be on chemo until my body gives up or a new treatment/cure appears but I’m not sure that’ll happen. My body will keep taking a pounding from regular chemo to keep me alive and that’s the best we can hope for just now.”

Godley underwent a hysterectomy in January 2022 to treat the ovarian cancer. Later that year, she was declared free of cancer after a scan came back clear .

However, in December, she told fans that her cancer had returned and she had to resume treatment.

In a video update, she said: “My recent scan and my blood tests showed that my cancer marker went up, and there’s still a bit of disease in my abdomen.

“So I want you all to know that I’ll be going through some more chemotherapy.”

Earlier this year, while she was embarking on her live stand-up tour while still undergoing weekly chemotherapy, Godley shared a positive update about her health and said her “haemoglobin is back up and holding its own”.

Update: an earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Ms Godley’s husband is also a comedian.

White Nights

Although the phenomenon known as the "White Nights" is not unique to St. Petersburg, in no other northern city have they received such poetic and literary acclaim. What could be more romantic than a walk along the banks of the city's rivers and canals in almost broad daylight, no matter what the time of day? No other major European city can rival this experience nor the atmosphere on the streets of St. Petersburg during the summer months - lively, friendly, romantic and bustling with people throughout the night as well as the day!

From late May to early July the nights are bright in St. Petersburg, with the brightest period, the White Nights, normally lasting from June 11 th to July 2 nd . The White Nights (Beliye Nochi) are a curious phenomenon caused by St. Petersburg's very northerly geographical location - at 59 degrees 57' North (roughly on the same latitude as Oslo, Norway, the southern tip of Greenland and Seward, Alaska). St. Petersburg is the world's most northern city with a population over 1 million, and its stands at such a high latitude that the sun does not descend below the horizon enough for the sky to grow dark. In fact night becomes curiously indistinguishable from day, so much so that the authorities never need to turn the city's streetlights on!

2 days in St Petersburg: the perfect itinerary

Feb 24, 2020 • 4 min read

janey godley tour 2022

The names that people in Russia call St Petersburg often give visitors the wrong impression. "Venice of the North" makes it sound dainty, when around its elegant streets and mesmerising art is a chaotic city of five million people. "Window to Europe" doesn’t fit either, as its days of looking at Europe from the outside are long gone. Russians have another name for their city of beauty and commotion, history and innovation: simply "Piter". Here's how to best experience Piter in a couple of days.

A view across a vast, immaculate courtyard that culminates in elegant baroque archways, as seen from the Hermitage Museums in St Petersburg, Russia

Saturday morning

Wake up to a Russian breakfast of blinchiki (pancakes) with sour cream or caviar at Yat restaurant, on the embankment beside the River Moyka. From there it’s a short walk to St Petersburg’s heart – the  State Hermitage Museum . You could spend a lifetime exploring the Hermitage's five buildings and still not see all of its art and treasures. If you only have a couple of hours but want to see something unforgettable, find the rooms with paintings by Da Vinci, Rembrandt and Rubens.

From the Hermitage, take a walk through the sumptuous Palace Square, then stop by Yusupov Palace – where Grigory Rasputin was murdered in 1916 – and Peter and Paul Fortress , where Tsar Nicholas II and the Romanov family are buried.

An aerial view of St Petersburg's landmark architecture, with golden spires and ornate facades visible beneath a blue sky

Saturday afternoon

After a morning breathing in Piter's classicism, spend the afternoon in some of its more eccentric places. Start with a European lunch served with a modern Russian twist at Schengen restaurant. Then brave a visit to Кunstkamera , also known as the Museum of Oddities, where exhibits include centuries-old two-headed embryos in jars. Kunstkamera is opposite the Hermitage and Winter Palace , on the other side of the River Neva.

Later on, take it a bit easier in the entertainment park on New Holland island. New Holland is a favourite spot for young couples and families with children: here you can stumble upon concerts and modern art installations, and find some more experimental places to eat.

Saturday evening

After dinner, a performance at the Mariinsky Theatre is a decadent but affordable night out. Or for something more lowbrow – but just as quintessentially St Petersburg – go to the streets around Sennaya Ploshchad for a bar crawl. Piter, after all, is the home of the mega-popular Baltika lager and Tsarskaya vodka , and is also the centre of Russia's evolving craft beer and cocktail scenes.

The colourful spires and golden domes of St Petersburg's Church of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood, against a clear blue sky

Sunday morning

Start your day with breakfast on the city's central boulevard, Nevsky Prospekt. Ring the buzzer on the unmarked door at number 81, and Ziferblat will introduce you to the Russian concept of an anticafe. Here the tea, coffee and cake are all free; what you pay for is the time you spend in this cosy room, playing chess or board games (and, just as often, meeting new people).

Close to Nevsky Prospekt is the Church of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood . Its heart-stoppingly beautiful domes are one of the most iconic sights in the whole of Russia – as well they might be, as they mark the place where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated in 1881. Finish your morning by stepping inside the Russian Museum , to see paintings by the Russian masters Repin and Shishkin, or by climbing to the top of St Isaac’s Cathedral , for a panoramic view that shows the scale of Europe's fourth-largest city.

A checked black-and-white tiled terrace with gold statues and fountains beyond. A canal leads to a river, and crowds of people can be seen milling around the water features

Sunday afternoon

For lunch, sample some food from St Petersburg's many international communities, with sushi or Georgian khachapuri (cheese bread)   somewhere on Nevsky. Then stock up on Russian treats at Kupetz Eliseevs , St Petersburg's fanciest department store, housed in just one exquisite room.

If you are in the city during the White Nights festival between May and July, spend a long summer afternoon in Peterhof, the former palace and gardens of Peter the Great. Peterhof is about 30km from the centre of the city, and is reachable by train, metro and marshrutka bus (or in summer, on a boat along the Neva from outside the Hermitage). One of the highlights is the Lower Park , a beautiful green space that includes the Grand Cascade , a collection of fountains that Peter himself designed. If you are in Russia during the winter and the night is drawing in, take a shorter journey instead to Udelnaya Fair , an enormous flea market in the north of the city, and wander past the stalls full of Tsarist and Soviet-era nostalgia.

Sunday evening

For a last dinner in St Petersburg, step back in time with an old-fashioned Russian supper at Severyanin restaurant.
