Autumn Leaves - Koyo (紅葉)

Deep reds, striking golds, and intense oranges found in nature's surroundings mark the beautiful autumn season in Japan. The colorful leaves (koyo) draw large numbers of travelers to Japan annually. The viewing of autumn foliage (koyo) in Japan has gained world-wide attention from travelers all over the globe. This popular activity is comparable to the viewing of cherry blossoms in the spring time. The best koyo spots can be found in prominent cities to mountainous regions. Autumn colors begin to reveal itself in mid-September in northern parts of Japan. It moves towards central and southern regions around the end of November. Some trees even keep its vivid colors until December.

Fall Foliage Autumn Leaves Tour Packages and Travel Planning

Autumn foliage (koyo) makes its appearance in Japan in the north first, beginning in mid-September. Colorful leaves then travel towards central and southern regions near the end of November. Beautiful autumn colors along with pleasantly cool weather make it an excellent time to visit Japan. Autumn also marks the time of harvest, and a variety of Japanese autumn festivals are held throughout the country. Experience nature in Japan surrounded by scarlet maple trees and golden ginkgo trees.

When is the best time to see Autumn Leaves in Japan?

Koyo can be seen throughout Japan for a period of 3 months. Because autumn colors appear at different times in different parts of Japan, there are specific dates and months to follow in order see koyo at its peak season. Depending on the location of where you wish to enjoy the scenery of autumn leaves, it is recommended to look at autumn forecasts of the region you are traveling to.

Mid October - Late November

Note: Due to fluctuating temperatures and weather conditions, the peak of autumn leaves can vary by a few days to a couple weeks.

The picture-perfect autumn colors of Japan are of great thanks to the illustrious Japanese Maple trees. The Japanese Maple tree is strongly associated with classic works of poetry and artwork, and is also viewed as a symbol of elegance. Its small, fingerlike leaves are distinguished for its rich red color, but also display shades of purple, orange, and yellow too. The turning of its colors is a highly anticipated event among Japanese people and from travelers abroad. They are commonly referred as "momiji", which means "become crimson leaves" and "baby's hands" in Japanese. The Japanese Maple tree is so celebrated in Japanese culture, there are even deep-fried maple leaf snacks found in Osaka, a special and tasty delicacy. Famous viewing spots of the stunning red leaves are found at temples and Japanese gardens, particularly in Kyoto, but can be admired at a variety of parks and streets as well.

6 Shirakawago (Gifu)

6 Shirakawago (Gifu)

Shirakawago is a small village distinguished for their traditional gassho-zukuri styled buildings. Gassho-zukuri refers to "built like hands in prayer", where the farmhouses' roofs resemble two hands praying. Shirakawago has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, featuring some farmhouses as old as 250 years. 7 Kiyomizu Temple (Kyoto)

7 Kiyomizu Temple (Kyoto)

First founded in 778, the Kiyomizu Temple is one of the most widely celebrated temples in Japan. It was built without the use of nails, and is most recognized for its huge wooden stage that protrudes from the main hall and overlooks a hillside. The stage grants visitors lovely views of maple trees and other natural scenery. Here you can stop by the Jishu Shrine and the Otowa Waterfall. At night, the temple also holds special autumn leaf illuminations.

8 Arashiyama (Kyoto)

8 Arashiyama (Kyoto)

Miyajima Island is an excellent way to indulge in Japanese culture with incredible views of natural scenery. The island is home to the Itsukushima Shrine, which is widely recognized for its famous "floating" torii gate. The giant, red torii gate is built over water and gives the impression of it floating during high tide. This photogenic sight has been ranked as one of Japan's three best views. Miyajima Island even has wandering deer, which are accustomed to tourists of course.

10 Takachiho Gorge (Kyushu)

10 Takachiho Gorge (Kyushu)

Takachiho Gorge is a narrow chasm featuring sheer cliffs and a 17 meter high waterfall. Its stone formations within the cliffs are even compared to the resemblance of dragon scales. The gorge's dense foliage turns into hues of red and orange during the autumn leaf season, granting a marvelous backdrop of the waterfall during your tour. The Takachiho Gorge allows two perspectives to enjoy its beauty, by either a pleasant walking trail or a boat ride along its calm rivers.

What our customers say

4.9 stars based on 544 REVIEWS

My family really enjoyed the tour. I wish that we could have seen all of the nebuta parade.

Barbara did a great job making sure we understood more about Japan culture and history. Her cards and such made it easy to understand her English and explanations. I would have liked more interaction with her on the tour though - she was more 'go-go-go and then left us be at the locations' and if she wasn't doing a presentation on the bus ride it was silence. Nothing wrong with it, but just an opportunity for her to improve there.

This is an amazing tour company. We got caught in the Microsoft outage which affected thousands of flights and our flights got delayed/ canceled and postponed for 2 days but AJT and Barbara and Katsume helped us tremendously in rebooking hotels for us and were available late into the night to help us have a safe and comfortable trip. I would recommend this company as a top notch tour agency. Our hotels were upscale/ the entire trip was fun and exceptional inspite of 97 deg temperatures many days.

The tour was fantastic. It was well organized and offered a variety of cities and sites to visit.

We thoroughly enjoyed touring your beautiful country.

Day 2 :  Take a half-day tour of Tokyo's fascinating sites, which contrast traditional temples and gardens with futuristic skyscrapers. The Imperial Palace outside, Asakusa, Sensoji Temple, Nakamise, and Meiji Shrine, as well as Omotesando shopping street, are some of the major attractions. Stay at Keio Plaza Tokyo.

Day 3: Mt. Fuji

Experience Japan's iconic Mt. Fuji on a full-day tour of the picturesque Fuji Five Lakes region, a group of scenic crater lakes that offer some of the best views of Japan's revered mountain. On this tour, you'll take a cable car ride to Mount Tenjo's summit (weather permitting) and visit the Arakura Sengen Shrine, where you'll see Chureito Pagoda, a multi-tiered red tower with stunning views across Mt. Fuji. Enjoy the picturesque views of Fuji and Fuji Five Lakes from the Kubota Itchiku Art Museum. Stay at Keio Plaza Tokyo.

Day 4-6:  Kyoto

Day 4 : Take the direct train from Tokyo to Kyoto. In a city founded over a thousand years ago, you'll find cobblestone streets. You'll find that Kyoto isn't just a city steeped in the past, but also a vibrant city with monks, artisans, baristas, and college students working hard towards a bright future. A top attraction in Japan is Kinkakuji Temple, which is covered in real gold leaf and visually stunning no matter what the weather is like. You'll also visit Kintano-tenmangu, which was built to appease the spirit of an angry ghost. Stay at Granvia Kyoto.

Day 5 :  You'll explore Arashiyama today, the western outskirts of Kyoto home to the world-renowned Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and the Nonomiya Shrine, two of Japan's most picturesque sites. Wander through the bamboo groves of Arashiyama, a serene and mystical forest that makes you feel like you're in another world. You will then visit the Nonomiya Shrine where, in ancient times, single imperial princesses would stay to purify themselves before taking up their duties as monarchs. Your next stop will be Tenryuji Temple, Kyoto's largest and most impressive temple and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stay at Granvia Kyoto.

Day 6 :   On today's tour, you will visit the Todaiji temple, the largest wooden building in the world and home to the Great Buddha. Visit Kasuga Taisha, founded in 768 AD and famous for its hundreds of bronze and stone lanterns donated by worshipers. Explore Nara Park, nicknamed Deer Park for its 1,000 tame deer. On your way back from Nara, you'll visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, one of Japan's most iconic sites, known for its 10,000 red tori gates that form a path up the mountain behind the temple.

Day 7-9: Osaka

Day 7 :   The Osaka transit system will allow you to experience local culture by yourself. As the gastronomic capital of Japan, you'll be able to experience the splendors of Osaka's casual cuisine, visiting the nation's most famous restaurant district: Dotonbori. Stay at the Marriott Miyako Hotel.

Day 8 :  We will start our day at Himeji Castle, also known as the White Heron Castle. It is one of Japan's original twelve castles, as most of the others have been destroyed by war or natural disasters. As a UNESCO world heritage site, this Japanese natural treasure is especially beautiful during fall's peak foliage when the leaves transform into a stunning array of reds, oranges, and golds, or during cherry blossom season. Afterward, you'll visit the nearby Kokoen garden, a beautiful traditional Japanese garden with nine different styles. Stay at the Marriott Miyako Hotel.

Day 9 :  Meet your driver for an airport transfer with a private vehicle.

Japan in Autumn: Everything You Need to Know

Whether you’ve arrived via Google or clicked here from my collection of photos of Japan in fall , you’re obviously curious about autumn in Japan 2024. When the leaves will change; where the best places to see them are; and how long you need to stay in Japan to have the full kōyō experience.

I’ll cover all of this, and then some. Interspersed with my Japan autumn leaves forecast 2024, for example, are personal anecdotes about my many trips to Japan in autumn—unlike a lot of people with pages on this topic, I’ve actually experienced Japan’s most colorful season on the ground, countless times over.

Indeed, I hope that both my words and my photography will inspire you to take an autumn foliage Japan 2024 trip, irrespective of where you go or how long you end up staying. Shall we begin?

Japan Autumn Foliage Forecast 2024

Although Japan’s fall color forecast varies from year to year, it’s not quite as temperamental as the one for cherry blossoms. As a result, even if a warmer autumn leads to an later season or a cooler one leads to an earlier one, I’ve founded that most years are pretty similar.

When is autumn in Japan 2024? Well, the Japan Meteorological Corporation will release its first forecast in early September 2024, which will predict how peak color will be compared to a “normal” year. However, do keep in mind that forecasts aren’t generally accurate until much later in the season—take the first one with a grain of salt.

Regardless of a particular forecast, here are the approximate times you can expect to enjoy autumn colors in Japan:

As far as how I formulate my autumn color forecasts, in 2024 and otherwise? If the months of September and October are warmer than average, I expect autumn colors to appear later than usual. The inverse is also true: In colder years, autumn colors come to Japan sooner. Other factors can also delay the colors or bring them forward, mostly notably rainfall (or lack thereof)

In order to monitor this for yourself, keep an eye on temperatures in the cities or prefectures where you want to enjoy fall foliage, and compare them to the averages you find posted online. You can also check “Recent” pictures of your target destinations on Instagram, although you should make sure they were recently taken, and not just recently posted.

Best Places to See Autumn Leaves in Japan in 2024

japan autumn leaves tours

As is the case during the spring with the sakura , Kyoto is one of the most satisfying places in Japan to see autumn colors, no matter what the Kyoto autumn leaves forecast 2024 ends up holding. My favorite places in Kyoto to see autumn colors include Arashiyama ( Tenryu-ji temple, Okochi Sanso Villa and the entire shoreline of the Katsuura River ) as well as Higashiyama temples like Nanzen-ji and Kiyomizu-dera , and more distant temples such as Daigo-ji and Kurama-dera . There are also many awesome Kyoto autumn color spots on the periphery of the city, from Tofuku-ji along the Nara Line en route to Fushimi district, to Kurama-dera north of the center.

Now, I’d like to tell you where you can go in Tokyo to enjoy autumn for yourself, whether for Tokyo autumn 2024 or another year. Obviously, the most famous autumn color spot in Tokyo is Meiji Jingu Gaien , aka Ginkgo Avenue , but that’s not the only game in town. In particular, I love Koishikawa Koraku-en and Rikugi-en gardens within the city limits; Yokohama ‘s Sankei-en garden is also very worth a visit, if you have time during your fall 2024 Japan trip. Additionally, as you can see above, colorful trees (especially yellow ginkgos) are strewn throughout the heart of the city, including in Marunouchi just west of Tokyo Station .

japan autumn leaves tours

The autumn forecast Japan 2024 can be vague for areas around Mt. Fuji , since they differ so much in terms of elevation and other climactic conditions. For instance, while it’s possible to see autumn colors in coastal Shizuoka prefecture and even along the shores of Lake Kawaguchi well into the end of November, you’ll want to visit earlier in the month (or maybe even October) if hiking trails closer to Japan’s most famous mountain are where you to see autumn colors. Early-to-mid November, meanwhile, is usually the best time to get the “money shot” behind Chureito Pagoda in Fujiyoshida .

Hokuriku and the Japanese Alps

japan autumn leaves tours

Irrespective of whether you plan to visit during autumn Japan 2024 or another year, Kanazawa is one of my favorite places in Japan to enjoy autumn colors. As an added bonus? It’s just a stone’s throw from the Japanese Alps , which are bounded by Nagano on the other side. If you’re coming to this region during the month of October, you might want to visit the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route near Toyama or Kamikochi Valley near Matsumoto . In November, on the other hand, autumn colors along the historical Nakasendo Trail will be nearing their peak, as will those in Shirakawago , Takayama and Kanazawa itself (at least toward the end of the month).

japan autumn leaves tours

I can understand why Nikko , a histor city in Tochigi prefecture just north of Tokyo, might seem like an afterthought for your Japan autumn 2024 trip. Most people come to this place, which centers around 17th-century Tosho-gu shrine as a day trip from Tokyo, assuming they come at all. This is complicated in autumn, at least if you’re not careful: While Tokyo’s leaves tend to change around or just before December 1, Nikko’s (particularly those near Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji ) often turn yellow, orange and red a full month (or even six weeks!) earlier.

japan autumn leaves tours

Another place to go if you’ll only have time to visit Japan during the earlier part of the season? Hokkaido autumn 2024 may be your best bet for seeing leaves! For visits in early-to-mid October you’ll want to head east from Sapporo , whether to the Shirogane Blue Pond in Biei near Asahikawa , or even over to Sounkyo Onsen or up to Mt. Daisetsuzan. Or to the wild Shiretoko Peninsula, be it to the inland lakes of Kussharo , Mashu and Akan , or past the town of Utoro toward the Shiretoko Five Lakes marsh. If you’re visiting in late October or early November, meanwhile, this is whne Sapporo-adjacent autumn spots such as the onsen towns of Jozankei and Noboribetsu will see their colors change.

japan autumn leaves tours

Japan’s superlative Tohoku region, meanwhile, sees leaves change a bit later than Hokkaido—which is to say, in line with when many places in North America and Europe experience autumn. If you’re planning an October or early November autumn trip to Japan, therefore, it makes sense to visit the northern half-dozen prefectures of Honshu island. Some of my personal favorite spots in these regions for autumn colors include Lake Towada and Oirase Stream , both in Aomori prefecture, as well as Yamadera temple in Yamagata and Ouchi-juku village in Fukushima .

japan autumn leaves tours

I feel like the Seto Inland Sea is not among the top destinations people search when consulting the Japan autumn leaves forecast 2024. But it should be. Foliage in Setouchi is magnificent even in the major cities of the region: In Hiroshima near the A-Bomb Dome ; at Okayama ‘s Korakuen garden; and in Ritsurin , Takamatsu ‘s treasure. Obviously, this beauty is even more pronounced the more off the beaten path you go, be that to deer-filled Miyajima island or to the harbor city of Onomichi , whose Old Temple Trail is arguably at its most enchanting during the autumn.

When Does Japan’s Autumn Foliage Usually Peak?

Whether we’re talking about autumn foliage Japan 2024 or in general, autumn leaves in Japan follow a rather predictable pattern. Specifically, you can expect to see peak koyo color according to the following calendar:

  • Late September: Hokkaido and high-altitude Tohoku destinations
  • Early-to-Mid October: Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route; Tohoku’s Aomori prefecture
  • Late October to Early November: The rest of Tohoku; the Japanese Alps ; Fuji Five Lakes; Nikko ; Mt. Koya
  • Mid-to-Late November: Kanazawa ; Kansai ; Setouchi; most of Shikoku; most of Kyushu ; San’in
  • Early December: Tokyo and southern Kyushu, plus Shikoku

You should note that these dates represent the peak of colors for all trees, whether for autumn in Japan 2024 or a different year. Japanese authorities also release a so-called “yellow leaves” forecast, which predicts when Japan’s famous ginkgo trees will change colors.

Is it Too Early to Plan a Japan Autumn Itinerary?

Autumn in Japan 2024 will start when the hillsides of Daisetsuzan National Park blaze red and orange in late September or early October. Accommodation for major Japan autumn leaves destinations will quickly fill up for 2024, so I’d recommend booking your hotels and ryokan as soon as possible.

Other FAQ About Autumn in Japan 2024

What months are autumn in japan 2024.

Japan’s autumn colors begin in Hokkaido in late September, color the hillsides of Tohoku and the Japanese Alps from mid-October through mid-November, and reach their peak in Kyoto, Hiroshima and eventually Tokyo as November gives way to December.

Where should I go in Japan in autumn?

As I mentioned in the beginning of this article, you can find autumn beauty throughout Japan, from rural hillsides and gorges in Hokkaido and the Tohoku regions, to ancient historical districts from Kyoto’s Higashiyama ward to the town of Takayama in the Japanese Alps.

Is it cold in autumn in Japan?

Japan can be downright hot at the official beginning of autumn in late September, with temperatures in major cities well above 25ºC or 80ºF. However, by the times leaves change wherever you choose to see them, things will have cooled down substantially. You can expect crisp days with temperatures around 10ºC, and chilly nights approaching (or sometimes dipping below) freezing.

The Bottom Line

Whether it’s six months or just six weeks away by the time you read this, autumn in Japan 2024 is closer than you think—the time to start planning is now! Split a week or two in late November between Tokyo and Kyoto, or come earlier in the year and visit somewhere more non-traditional, be that in off-the-beaten path Tohoku or in the scenic Fuji Five Lakes region. One thing to note about Japan fall foliage 2024, if you’re feeling stressed, is that they’re much less fickle than the cherry blossoms —they last longer, too. Still, if you’re feeling uneasy about planning your trip or simply don’t have time to do it, there’s another option. When you hire me to create a custom Japan autumn colors itinerary for 2024 or 2025 , I sweat all the details for you!

What's included

At a glance.

Each autumn, Japan is carpeted in hues of fiery red and gold as summer ends and the autumn leaves erupt on every tree. It’s very difficult to predict exactly when the autumn leaves will make their dramatic appearance in each city and just how long they will last for, but we’ll do our best to show you Japan’s autumn leaves on a luxury trip that takes in two of Japan’s most important cities and an ancient sacred mountain.

We begin our autumn leaves tour with four days in Kyoto, Japan’s imperial pearl, where we hope to see the spectacular sight of the city’s ancient palaces, traditional townhouses and ornate shrines augmented by vibrant autumn leaves. There’s time for a visit to the usually verdant Arashiyama which we anticipate will be coloured in autumnal reds and yellows.

Then it’s on to sacred Mount Koya, one of Japan ‘s most revered ancient sites, for a monastery stay, a Buddhist ceremony and a tour of the famous Okunoin cemetery. Our final stop brings us to Osaka with a completely customised tour to take in the best of the city and its shades of autumn.

You’ll stay at luxury accommodation in each city with expert guides on hand and our insider recommendations to ensure that you get the most out of each destination.

japan autumn leaves tours

Meet your guide early this morning at your hotel to start your exploration of Kyoto. We'll start at the Tofuku-ji temple which is one of Kyoto’s most attractive temples, especially when surrounded by autumn foliage. We then continue to the nearby Fushimi Inari Shrine which was founded in the 9th century in honour of the fox that farmers believe is the messenger of the harvest god. We then return towards Kyoto centre to visit the Sanjusangendo Hall. While you won't find much autumn foliage surrounding it, it's famed for its 1001 statues of Kannon the goddess mercy and its impressive demon guardians. Afterwards, we will continue to the nearby Kiyomizu-dera Temple, originally founded in 798. The magnificent views of the city from its main hall are especially impressive in the autumn and attract visitors throughout Japan. A nice and relaxing stroll will take you through the old neighbourhood of Sannenzaka which used to be the favoured route for pilgrims travelling to Kiyomizudera and is now lined with little shops and cafes. We'll then visit the Kodaiji Temple of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism which was founded during the Momoyama-period by the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the powerful general who unified Japan at the end of the 16th century. Enjoy lunch at your own account.

japan autumn leaves tours

After lunch, take a break from temples with a visit to the Geisha district of Gion which is famed for the preservation of its traditional architecture and entertainment presented by graceful Geiko, “women of art.” During its golden age in the first half of 19th century, more than 3000 Geikos worked in some 700 teahouses in Gion. We'll also visit Nishiki market, a narrow shopping arcade that's only 400 meters in length featuring more than 100 vendors. A recommended shop to visit is “Aritsugu” which offers a variety of excellent kitchen tools. If time allows, we will make a final stop at Ginkakuji, the Silver Pavilion, which is splendid in Autumn. Ginkaku-ji has an area of around 25,000 square meters and is known for its luxuriant growth of moss and its garden is composed of two terraces. The upper terrace is arranged in the style of a dry garden that uses stones, sand and plants with no water, to represent a scenic view. We'll then return to the hotel where you can spend the rest of the evening at your leisure.

japan autumn leaves tours

This morning your guide will meet you at your hotel and bring you to Kinkaku-ji the Golden Pavilion temple which was built in 1397 to serve as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. From here we visit the serene Ryoan-ji temple and its celebrated rock garden which is comprised of nothing but clay walls, raked sand and 15 rocks.

japan autumn leaves tours

Visit to Arashiyama, a lush district that provides a welcome break from the city’s hustle. Arashiyama features numerous interesting sites surrounded by nature and offers some stunning autumn vistas. We'll start at the unique and quiet Otagi-Nenbutsuji Temple to see its 1200 Rakan figures, carved by worshipers to pray for the prosperity of the temple which have been sculpted with much humour. Continue towards Okochi Sanso, a splendid mountain retreat that was once occupied by a silent screen actor with grounds at their best during autumn. From here, take a relaxing stroll around the bamboo forests, then come to Tenriu-ji Temple, a famous Zen Buddhist temple. We end our visit at the Togetsukyo Bridge, one Arashiyama's major landmarks and also known as “Moon Crossing Bridge”.

Accommodation in Mount Koya

japan autumn leaves tours

The Eko-in Temple was founded by the monk Dosho a direct disciple of Kobodaishi, almost 1200 years ago. “Eko” originally means “Transference of Merit”, which is related to the “Karma” concept. Coming on a pilgrimage to Koya-san and staying at a Monastery is considered as an acquisition of merit for Buddhist followers.

Rooms are traditional Tatami style, offering guests a authentic Japanese experience. Dinner is included in your stay and will be served early in the comfort of your room. Sample the delicious vegetarian cuisine created by monks, called “Shojin” and experience a very different aspect of Japanese society: the world of Buddhism. During your stay you will have the opportunity to enjoy the Buddhist practice of Shakyo, hand copying the Sutra.

Upon arrival in Koya, enjoy lunch (at your own account) and start your half-day excursion with a visit to Kongo Buji, the holiest Temple on Mount Koya and headquarters of the Shingon sect. The complex comprises administrative buildings, a religious university and a temple that's open to visitors. Built in 1593 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, it has been destroyed by fire and rebuilt several times. We then continue to the Garan where you will see some of the most important buildings in Koyasan and end your visit with a unique experience in the form of a “Jukai”, a formal and ancient Buddhist ceremony in which a Buddhist monk will guide you through the process of “taking refuge in the teaching of Buddha”. The setting is pitch-black - except a few flickering candles - and the ceremony will create a very spiritual atmosphere that will put you in the right frame of mind for your stay in Koya-san. After the ceremony, you will be brought to the Eko-in Temple to check-in. Your guide will assist you and explain the details of a stay at a Buddhist monastery.

Mount Koya is a sacred and tranquil spot that has been revered since ancient times. During your time here, you will stay in a buddhist monastery for a fully immersive experience. Speak to your Travel Designer to find out the best things to do and see here.

This morning, we will wake up early and take part in a morning Buddhist ceremony that is open to residents of the Temple in the richly decorated prayer hall. You'll find that the prayers and chanting are hypnotic and the ambience is spiritual. After the ceremony, you will be able to walk around the prayer hall and see funeral tablets as well as several Buddhist artefacts, usually not accessible to the public. This is a rare opportunity to glimpse the most sacred precincts of a Buddhist Temple. After the morning service, we will try and experience a “Goma” fire service, a traditional ceremony that is unique to Koya-san monasteries.

This morning, we will check out of the monastery and be transferred in a private vehicle to Okunoin where we'll enjoy a morning stroll in the largest cemetery of Japan. Your guide will explain the meaning of statues and funerary stalls along the way to the Mausoleum of Kobodaishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism. Upon arrival at the mausoleum, we'll bear witness to the daily ritual ceremony in which monks bring meals twice daily to the cave where Kobodaishi is said to be meditating for 1200 years. If time allows, we will visit the Daimon and Reihokan Museum. We'll then return to the centre of town and enjoy an early lunch.

Lake Towada, autumn leaves

12 most beautiful autumn destinations in Japan: from Kyoto to Aomori

Leaf Tokyo for these lakes, temples and forests, where you'll find some of Japan's most spectacular autumn foliage

Kaila Imada

Aside from the ever-popular cherry blossom season , autumn in Japan is easily one of the best times to travel the country. The changing autumn colours, locally known as koyo , is highly anticipated, with annual  forecasts predicting when the leaves will change from green to stunning shades of yellow, gold and red.

Thankfully, there is ample time to enjoy this seasonal spectacle as temperatures vary throughout the country. This means you’ll be able to catch the leaves anytime from the end of September through to December. From the temples of Kyoto to the mountains in Hokkaido, keep these gorgeous destinations in your list if you want to see the best of Japanese autumn.

RECOMMENDED: The 23 most beautiful places in Japan

Hello autumn

Kyoto, kyoto.

Kyoto, Kyoto

If you only have time to visit one place in autumn, Kyoto is your best bet. Japan’s cultural capital is home to some of the country’s most famous koyo spots including the picturesque Ruriko-in Temple , where the garden’s autumn scenery can be seen reflected on a polished black laquered table. Although Arashiyama is most popular for its bamboo forest, this countryside neighbourhood also offers beautiful autumn leaves on its forested mountains along the river.

Kyoto’s temples are undoubtedly the highlight of the autumn season. You can catch gorgeous foliage at many temples including Tofukuji Temple , Kiyomizudera and Eikando. The peak time to visit Kyoto is usually from mid-November through early December.

Kurobe Gorge, Toyama

Kurobe Gorge, Toyama

This lush ravine in the Northern Japanese Alps is one of the deepest gorges in the country. The area is most famous for the Kurobe Gorge Railway, which runs for 20km through the mountainous terrain with several stops along the way to enjoy panoramic views of nature. It’s a wonderful spot to visit come autumn, especially between late October and mid-November.

Naruko Gorge, Miyagi

Naruko Gorge, Miyagi

This jaw-dropping gorge in the north-western part of Miyagi prefecture is one of top natural attractions in the Tohoku region. From late October to early November, the trees here blush in  shades of gold and auburn. To get the best views, head to the Narukokyo Resthouse, where you can see the famous Ofukazawa Bridge from the observation deck. To immerse yourself in the gorgeous surroundings, take a stroll along the Naruko Gorge Walking Trail to the bottom of the gorge.

Minoo Falls, Osaka

Minoo Falls, Osaka

Looking for a waterfall against a backdrop of autumn foliage? Minoo Falls in Osaka checks all the right boxes. The 33m-high waterfall is easily reached via a leisurely 45-minute trek at Minoo Park. Along the trail you'll pass a handful of local shops and temples, which add to the area's charm. A must-try speciality in autumn is the momiji leaf tempura sold at some shops in the park. To catch the autumn colours at their best, plan your visit around mid- to late November.

Jozankei Onsen, Hokkaido

Jozankei Onsen, Hokkaido

This charming onsen town in western Hokkaido is a favourite destination among koyo seekers. The view of the resort town is particularly memorable around this time of the year, as the area surrounding Hoheikyo Dam and the famous red Futami Suspension Bridge is awash with colourful foliage. For an aerial vantage point, ride the gondola at Sapporo International Ski Resort and see the blushing leaves from above. The best time to visit Jozankei Onsen is from early to mid-October.

Mikuni Pass, Hokkaido

Mikuni Pass, Hokkaido

The Mikuni Pass in Kamishihoro, which runs along National Route 273, sits at a staggering 1,139m above sea level. From this height, you’ll be afforded with some of the best views of autumn in Hokkaido from late-September to mid-October. The scenic drive cuts through Daisetsuzan National Park, where you’ll also find an abundance of trees which change colours as the weather cools. The best time to visit is between September and October, and there are free parking lots and lookout points along the way for you to take in the views.

Lake Towada, Aomori

Lake Towada, Aomori

The largest caldera lake on Japan’s Honshu island is a sight to behold come autumn. Since the weather tends to be cooler up north in Aomori, the trees here tend to change their colours slightly earlier than their southern counterparts, with peak season usually around mid- to late-October. The shores are populated by beech trees, which turn bright yellow, and momiji maple trees, which are known for their vermillion shades. The thing that makes this scenic spot truly spectacular is the reflection of Mt Towada and its seasonal foliage on the lake’s still surface.

Nikko, Tochigi

Nikko, Tochigi

Just north of Tokyo, Nikko feels like a mini Kyoto with its Unesco World Heritage-listed temples and picturesque nature, especially in autumn. There are many spots to take in the scenery but the Shinkyo Bridge and Ryuzu Falls offer some of the best photo ops.

Shinkyo Bridge sits near the entrance to Nikko’s main shrines and temples. Its vibrant red colour matches perfectly with the seasonal vermillion foliage. Ryuzu Falls, otherwise also known as Dragon’s Head Waterfall, is part of Yukawa River and flows into Lake Chuzenji. In autumn, the leaves here turn shades of gold, orange and red, giving the waterfall a dragon-like appearance. The peak season for autumn leaves in Nikko usually runs from early October to early November.

Nara Park, Nara

Nara Park, Nara

Nara Park is so extensive that you could spend an entire day trekking the grounds taking in all the autumn foliage. A particularly notable spot is the immediate area surrounding Todaiji Temple , which is populated by red momiji maple trees, brilliant yellow ginkgo and of course, the famous bowing deer. In the middle of Nara Park you’ll come across Ukimido, a beautiful wooden pavilion that looks as if it's floating on the pond. This special site is especially scenic in autumn as the colourful foliage reflects on the pond’s surface, creating an arresting optical illusion. Peak season in Nara roughly stretches from mid-November through December.

Lake Kawaguchiko, Yamanashi

Lake Kawaguchiko, Yamanashi

Nothing screams ‘Japan’ more than a photo of Mt Fuji surrounded by beautiful autumn leaves. While any of the Fuji five lakes is a good spot to catch the seasonal foliage, Lake Kawaguchiko is especially stunning. The lake offers two vantage points: the Momiji Corridor along the Nashigawa River and the iconic Momiji Tunnel which gives you a shot of Mt Fuji framed by red maple leaves. The trees here don’t usually start to blush until mid to late November and should last until early December.

Rikugien Garden, Tokyo

Rikugien Garden, Tokyo

If you prefer to stay in Tokyo, there are still a good number of parks and nature attractions to enjoy the autumn leaves. One of the best spots in the city is Rikugien Garden . During peak autumn, the Japanese landscape garden usually hosts an evening illumination, a rare chance to see the foliage in a different light. The best time to visit? Try late November to early December.

Hitachi Seaside Park

  • Things to do

Hitachi Seaside Park

If you’ve had your fill of red momiji leaves and are looking for something different, head to Ibaraki’s Hitachi Seaside Park. Come autumn, the park's kochia (summer cypress) fields are a sight to behold. The small, bushy plants turn from bright green to brilliant red as the weather cools. This expansive park makes for a fun day trip as it can be accessed in just over an hour from central Tokyo. These bushes are at their best around mid-October. Later into the month, the bushes will take on a dusty golden hue.

Autumn Leaves in Japan

Contact our travel consultant, 1-855-325-2726 (us/canada), 1-909-988-8885 (international), mon. - fri., 8:30am - 5:30pm (pst), (except national holidays), [email protected].

Autumn leaves in Japan are almost as popular as the cherry blossom season. Kōyō is the Japanese word for autumn leaves. Kōyō and momiji (maple leaves) use the same kanji and has been that way since the Heian Period. It is a time when all the mountains, rivers, countryside, temples, shrines, parks, gardens and areas around famous structures are surrounded with fall foliage. Searching for autumn leaves has been a custom of Japan since the 8th century when it was mentioned in the compilation of Manyoshu poetry. The activity was even mentioned in the famed “The Tale of Genji,” as a scene of hunting for gorgeous autumn colors. Even a large part of the Kokin Wakashu poetry collection is centered on the autumn leaves. There are many maple trees, Japanese Rowan, Japanese larch, Ginkgo, beech, birch, and many others that change colors during this time. The autumn foliage starts appearing as early as September.

When and Where to see Autumn Leaves in Japan

Autumn Leaves When and Where Map

It first starts in the Hokkaido region and works its way down Japan. Daisetsuzan National Park shows the first signs of autumn. In the Onuma Quasi National Park, which is located north of Hakodate, are two lakes that are covered with autumn leaves beginning from mid-October. Onuma and Konuma Lake can be found at the foot of Mount Komagatake. One of the attractive features of the area is the walking trails throughout the grounds during the fall season. Along the trails you can see the leaves painted in autumn colors. You can also rent bicycles and take the cycling course that goes around Lake Onuma. Seeing the two lakes surrounded by bright colored maple trees is a sight worth the trip. Tohoku is the next area that will show signs of autumn leaves. Some of the most popular places to see them would be around Lake Towada. The autumn color of the trees starts appearing in late October. It is part of the Hachimantai National Park, which reaches Aomori, Akita, and Iwate Prefectures. You can enjoy cruises that leave from the Nenokuchi and Yasumiya ports. There is a viewpoint between the two peninsulas of the lake. While on the boat you can see the surrounding areas covered with fall foliage. On the eastern shores of Lake Towada is the only outlet for the body of water to disperse from. It utilizes the Oirase Mountain Stream that runs through a virgin forest for 14 kilometers. The trail that goes along the stream is one of the most popular places to see autumn leaves in Japan. There are numerous maple, beech and white cedar trees located within the 14 kilometers. This trail allows visitors to stroll under the bright colored leaves and be treated to excellent views of the scenery encompassing the stream. Further down the Tohoku region is the city called Morioka. The Morioka Castle Site Park has many trees that change to fall colors around early November. Stone walls are all that remains of the former structure and is remarkably amazing during the autumn season. In the Kanto region there is a famous historical city called Nikko where the autumn leaves appear much earlier when compared to other spots in the area. Nikko is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Toshogu Shrine, Futarasan Shrine, and Rinnoji Temple. The color starts changing around early October and continues to mid-November. During the early season you can see them at Ryuzu Waterfall, Yumoto Onsen, and Yudaki waterfall. In the mid-season the topped ranked tourist spots will be in season like Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Waterfall, and Irohazaka Winding Road. There are many visitors who enjoy the fall scenery at Nikko and come from all over to see them. Further down Japan there is a place called Hakone, which is known for its fantastic views of Mt. Fuji in the background. Riding the unique cruising boats around the lake during the autumn season is an activity worth doing while in the area. Being less than 100 kilometers away it is a city known for its hot springs and natural beauty. The added charm of the fall foliage is another reason to explore Hakone. The best time to see the trees in autumn season is in mid-November. In Gifu Prefecture is Shirakawago, which is a village known for their Gassho (prayer hands) style farmhouses. Those farmhouses have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and provide magnificent sceneries throughout the year. In the fall these heritage sites will be surrounded by bright colored foliage. From the Shiroyama viewpoint you can see both the farmhouses and village. The times to see the village would be from October to November. In the city of Kyoto there are many sites that attract the attention of visitors during the peak of the autumn season, which is from mid-November to early December. Kyoto was once the political and cultural center of Japan. There are many traditional structures that have survived the test of time. Surrounding these sites are numerous mountains and hill that change with the season. In Arashiyama, which is famous for its bamboo grove, is the Togetsukyo Bridge that is encompassed by hills that add to the scenery. When the peak for fall hits the area becomes more attractive than usual. Kiyomizudera, a famous Buddhist Temple, has large scaffolding that overlooks the trees below. Like the cherry blossoms planted down below there are other trees that change colors during the autumn season. While you admire the beauty of Kinkakuji, a building where the upper two floors are covered in gold leaf, with fall colors in the background.

Start with an orientation from your guide before you begin your exploration of Tokyo.

Tokyo has many faces and today you begin our exploration of Tokyo in the Marunouchi area between the expansive Imperial Palace Plaza and the beautifully restored 100-year old Tokyo Station . Marunouchi means inside wall or moat, and it was originally the inner sanctum of Edo Castle , now the Emperor's Palace. It is the oldest and elitist office area in Japan, where all the top Japanese companies have headquarters, and is a great spot to see the blend of history and modernity. In Marunouchi you will see;

  • Hibiya Park , which is one of the top autumn colour sites in Tokyo,
  • The Imperial Palace Plaza with 2,000 impressive black pine trees , a whole world away from the business district of Marunouchi,
  • Tree-lined Marunouchi streets and old buildings which marked the modernization of Japan in the 19th century,
  • The red-brick façade of Tokyo Station , one of the city’s most striking pieces of architecture, against the glass and steel of neighbouring skyscrapers.

After wandering through Marunouchi with your guide, you will have lunch at a local restaurant rubbing shoulders with the Japanese office workers.

In the afternoon, you will visit Rikugi-en Japanese Garden, renowned for its autumn leaves display.

Your "Welcome Japan" dinner tonight is at a restaurant in Ginza.

A dazzling metropolis characterised by soaring towers and neon, Japan’s capital is also an intriguing collection of small neighbourhoods each with their own distinct flavour. As you explore the city, you’ll also get beyond its surface to discover some of the local places where ordinary Tokyoites live and socialise.

Today you will visit one of those neighbourhoods, Fukagawa . Despite being close to the business districts of central Tokyo, Fukagawa has a laid-back and serene atmosphere, characteristic of Tokyo's traditional "shitamachi," the old heart of the city. This bayside district was historically a merchant neighbourhood, and it still retains an unpretentious, down-to-earth feel.

While you are in the area, you will visit Kiyosumi Garden . Originally built by a local lord in the Edo period, the garden was later owned by the Iwasaki family, the founder of the Mitsubishi conglomerate as a place to entertain guests and employees. It is an exemplary stroll-style garden with a large pond in the middle punctuated by magnificent stones transported from all over Japan.

This evening you will try a more casual dining experience near your hotel.

japan autumn leaves tours

Today you will head to Hakone, a scenic hot-spring holiday destination  in the mountains near  Mt Fuji . Hakone is renowned for its natural beauty and world-class art museums.

The garden at Hakone Museum is spectacular with its Japanese maple trees in red autumn leaves at this time of the year. Narukawa Art Museum allows you to see modern-day Japanese paintings and experience the exquisite view of Mt Fuji across Lake Ashi .

Tonight you will have your first chance to experience an authentic kaiseki-style banquet and a soak in a hot-spring onsen bath . Your guide will talk you through the ritual and etiquette of the Japanese bath and explain why visiting an onsen remains one of the nation’s most popular pastimes.

japan autumn leaves tours

This morning you try a traditional Japanese breakfast – a nutritious, protein-rich mix of grilled fish, miso soup, tofu, rice and pickles.

Walking through the Hakone Open-Air Museum you will come upon amazing sculptures from the likes of Henry Moore and Rodin.

After a leisurely morning relaxing in Hakone's ambience and nature, you travel by Japan's famous shinkansen (bullet train) to Hiroshima.

Upon arrival at Hiroshima, dinner tonight is Hiroshima's most popular soul food Okonomiyaki.

japan autumn leaves tours

A minivan and short ferry ride take you to the picturesque island of Miyajima , best known for the vermillion-red floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). After admiring the gate, you begin a tour of this unusual shrine.

Originally constructed in 593 when the island was designated a sacred island only to be inhabited by the gods, the Itsukushima Shrine is also famous for its unique pier-like structure which sits above the tides.

You will visit pretty Momijidani Park to see its trademark maple trees ablaze with autumn leaves . Miyajima is home to several important Buddhist temples and pavilions, as well as a popular shopping street near the waterfront with its restaurants and souvenir shops.

Back on mainland, you will have dinner at the hotel tonight.

japan autumn leaves tours

This morning before leaving Hiroshima, you visit the Peace Memorial Park and its informative and sobering Atomic Bomb Museum , contemplating the devastating impact of the world’s first atomic bomb attack in August 1945. Despite this history, present-day Hiroshima remains a very welcoming and vibrant city, characterized by wide boulevards and attractive leafy parks.

In the afternoon, you will get on board the shinkansen again to Kyoto , the most iconic of cities.

With 17 World Heritage-listed sites, Kyoto is the cultural heart of Japan and the guardian of many of its ancient traditions. Originally made capital in 794, present-day Kyoto offers an endless range of traditional craft shops, refined restaurants, ancient temples and Shinto shrines. It will be a mass of autumn leaves at this time of the year.

Upon arrival, you will visit some temples and gardens at the peak of autumn colours in Kyoto.

japan autumn leaves tours

In Arashiyama at the foot of the mountains to Kyoto’s west, once again you will immerse yourself in magnificent autumn scenery against the backdrop of exemplary temples and gardens. Today, you will;

  • Visit Tenryuji Temple , one of the best examples of formal and informal Japanese gardens,
  • Take a Rickshaw ride to go through Arashiyama's famous Bamboo Grove,
  • Explore deeper into rural Sagano and fully experience the rustic simplicity and serenity of mountain temples away from the tourist crowds, and
  • Sample Kyoto’s traditional tofu cuisine , a local specialty that has its roots in Kyoto’s Buddhist vegetarian past for lunch.

japan autumn leaves tours

A minivan takes you to the southern part of Kyoto to visit one of Kyoto’s most famous Shinto shrines, Fushimi-Inari Taisha. A vast shrine complex, it’s best known for the thousands of vermillion-red torii gates that frame the pilgrim paths winding through the woods of Mt Inari.

After another magnificent temple garden, you will visit Nishiki Market , dubbed Kyoto's kitchen. A 400-meter narrow passage is packed with more than 100 vendors selling pickles, vegetables, seafood, cookware, ceramics and paper products.

This afternoon and evening, you have some free time to explore Kyoto. Why not explore Kyoto’s bustling food and textile markets? Or, you may prefer to wander around Kyoto’s great range of craft shops and department stores for something special to take home.

Another train ride will take you to your next destination, Kanazawa , located on the Sea of Japan coast.

Kanazawa's historical lineage, as a wealthy castle town steeped in samurai culture, offers an impressive range of architectural and cultural attractions and beautifully preserved streetscapes. In Kanazawa, you visit;

  • Kenrokuen Garden , a castle garden dating back to the 17th century and regarded as one of the three best gardens in Japan, and
  • An authentic tea house to experience a Japanese-style tea ceremony.

Dinner tonight is Kanazawa's regional cuisine at a restaurant.

japan autumn leaves tours

A day trip by private minivan takes you to t he UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawago . This is a charming rural village surrounded by mountains and blazing autumn- coloured leaves.

The village’s famous thatched-roof farmhouses known as gassho-zukuri (meaning “hands clasped together in prayer”) are the main attraction. Their steeply slanted roofs were built to withstand the region’s heavy snowfalls. You will hear about their fascinating history and construction.

Your lunch today is a warm bowl of soba noodles , the local specialty. And for dinner tonight, enjoy premium Wagyu beef cooked in front of you at a Teppanyaki restaurant.

japan autumn leaves tours

This morning, you set out to explore the beautifully preserved Nagamachi samurai resident district and visit one of the former samurai houses that is now a museum. The museum house showcases the great architecture and the might and wealth of samurais in this area during the heyday of the feudal era.

You then visit Omicho Market , a lively working market. As you walk through the market the guide will point out some unique products of west coast Japan. The market houses many little local restaurants, one of which you have lunch today .

There is a great variety of things to see in Kanazawa and this afternoon and evening have been set aside especially for you to explore.

Kanazawa is well-known for its superb arts and crafts including pottery, lacquerware, silk and gold leaf. You can also participate in a culinary activity such as a cooking class or sake tasting .

Please ask Journey to the East for more information.

This morning you will hop onto the Shinkansen one last time and travel back to Tokyo where your adventure started.

The rest of the day is free until dinner, an opportunity to finish shopping or visit places you missed in the first round.

This evening, you will gather together one last time to enjoy your farewell dinner.

This morning after breakfast, your 2025 Autumn Leaves Tour of Japan concludes.

You can depart from Haneda International Airport or Narita International Airport . Perhaps you might like to linger in Japan for a little longer. We will be delighted to plan your personal post-tour extension to show you a different part of Japan. Please see our Model Extension Itineraries on Private Tour page for inspiration!

Note: The cost of an escorted transfer to your departure airport is not included in our Small Group Tours (as we found many guests choose to stay in Japan a bit longer), but we will be happy to arrange your transfer to the airport or your next destination. Please see our FAQ for more details.

Who this Japan tour is for...

This is a perfect tour for people who:

  • Want to be in Japan at the peak of autumn colours
  • Wish to cover must-visit cities
  • Would like to travel at a slower pace
  • Enjoy comfortable accommodation (4 stars +) including R yokans but all with western beds
  • Prefer an organised tour with most activities and meals included
  • Like the use of a minivan which gives you greater access and comfort

WOW! What an experience. Waking up to see the sunrise over Mt Fuji, then taking an outdoor onsen bath as the sun crept higher. The accommodation was a unique experience from the moment we arrived to the time we departed. The traditional rooms with Tatami mats and bedding, the yukata, the traditional meals and number of courses – they had to be seen to be believed.

Katie & Alexander Walshe

We don’t have anything to suggest to change as we thoroughly enjoyed the experience as it was. It was good advice to have the extra day in Tokyo before and after the tour to allow time to settle in before the tour and travelling home at the end. With the additional [custom] walking trip, it would probably have been better to have an extra day in Osaka before starting the walking tour to allow time to prepare and rest.

Sue & Merv Cowie

What a wonderful Autumn Leaves tour we had. Great places, guides, hot tubs and food. Journey to the East thought of everything. It took the pressure off travelling to Japan.

Sue & Peter Wood

Our 2019 Autumn Leaves Comfort Tour of Japan was fantastic. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the tour. All the guides were fantastic and the attention to detail by Journey to the East was exemplary. The food, the stories, the autumn colours, the transport and the hotels were all wonderful. The planning and execution were first class and nothing was left to chance. We could not recommend this tour more highly.

Stuart & Elaine Sime

A very well-organised tour of some of the major cities, with emphasis on autumn colour in gardens, temples, and shrines, led by extremely good local guides. We were lucky to be there at the peak of autumn colour. The tour gave a good introduction to Japanese culture, including religion, food, and history. The hotels were excellent and we ate at top restaurants which highlighted different aspects of Japanese food. The tour organisers were extremely helpful and met every request, especially for our tour extensions. Individual, detailed itineraries were a bonus.

Mary Campbell

As a single traveller this tour was superb in every way – a wonderful group of fellow travellers, fantastic guides + unforgettable autumn colours! Thank you Journey to the East

Autumn leaves (koyo)

japan autumn leaves tours

Colorful leaves (gt, kōyō) are to the Japanese autumn what cherry blossoms are to spring. The viewing of autumn leaves has been a popular activity in Japan for centuries and today draws large numbers of travelers to famous koyo spots both in the mountains and in the cities.

japan autumn leaves tours

Each year, starting in mid September, the "koyo front" slowly moves southwards from the northern island of Hokkaido until it reaches the lower elevations of central and southern Japan around late November. Some trees around Tokyo and Kyoto remain colorful into December.

Mount Takao is a 599m high mountain located in Hachioji, Tokyo. It is easily accessible from the city center by train in about an hour and a half, and is a place where you can easily enjoy low mountain climbing. The best time to see the autumn leaves is usually from mid-November to early December, and this is the time of year when the most people visit. To avoid the crowds, we recommend visiting on a weekday.

You can take a cable car to Takaosan Station, which is 472 meters above sea level, and along the way there are clusters of maples such as Japanese maples and Japanese maples, creating a spectacular tunnel of red and yellow leaves in the peak season. Even those who are not confident in their physical strength can enjoy the autumn leaves from the cable car.

Showa Memorial Park is a popular park known for its beautiful flowers, such as cherry blossoms, rape blossoms, and tulips, but it is also famous for its beautiful yellow leaves.

There are two rows of ginkgo trees in the park, and many people take photos in this golden tunnel, which is very popular as it photogenic.

Not only the ginkgo trees line the street, but the sight of the approximately 300 maple trees in the Japanese Garden turning red in autumn is also magnificent.

The Ginkgo Avenue in the Outer Gardens of Meiji Shrine is a tree-lined avenue that stretches from the "Aoyama 2-chome" intersection of National Route 246 to the baseball field. Ginkgo trees are planted on both sides of the road, and in autumn the leaves turn yellow, creating a magnificent golden landscape.

It's nice to visit when the leaves are turning yellow, but we also recommend visiting a little later when the leaves fall. When the tree-lined streets are covered in yellow leaves, it looks like a golden carpet has been laid out.

Mizumoto Park , the largest waterfront park in Tokyo, is famous for its 1,800 giant metasequoia trees that turn a brick-red color in autumn.

When you enter the metasequoia forest in the park, the sunlight filters through the gaps between the trees, creating a fantastical landscape. In the waterside zone, you can see the metasequoia reflected on the water's surface, making the scenery even more vivid.

Hama-rikyu Gardens, designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and a Special Historic Site by the national government, is a beautiful and venerable garden whose history dates back to 1654. Nowadays, it is surrounded by skyscrapers, making this park a mysterious space where time seems to have stopped.

Every year from mid-November to early December, approximately 260 trees, including tricolor maples, cherry trees, and maples, change color in various locations within the park, creating a traditional Japanese autumn landscape that can be enjoyed.

We recommend renting a kimono and taking photos while walking around the park in it, which will allow you to take some photos that are truly Japanese.

Since its construction, Rikugien Garden has been counted as one of the two great gardens of Edo along with Koishikawa Korakuen Garden, and is a historic garden that dates back to 1695.

In autumn, the garden is vibrantly colored with the leaves of about 560 trees, including maples, enkianthus campanulatus, and ginkgo trees. You can see this beautiful scenery all over the park, and enjoy the combination of it with the traditional Japanese garden.

Every year during the autumn foliage season, there are special night viewings and the gardens are lit up, so you can enjoy the autumn leaves at night. The dates and availability of these events change every year, so be sure to check the official website .

Shiba Park is one of the oldest parks in Japan, having opened in 1873. It is located near Tokyo Tower, a Japanese landmark, and you can take photos of the tower up close along with the Tokyo skyline.

In autumn, the ginkgo trees in the park turn yellow, creating a beautiful contrast with the red Tokyo Tower. A little later than the ginkgo trees, the maples in Momiji Valley begin to turn red.

Hibiya Park was opened in 1903 as Japan's first modern Western-style park. Although it is located near Tokyo Station and Ginza and is surrounded by office buildings and commercial facilities, it is an urban oasis with abundant nature.

This park covers a vast area of approximately 16.2 hectares, and in the fall it is filled with beautiful, colorful scenery, including avenues lined with yellow ginkgo trees and "Momiji Mountain" where the maple leaves turn red.

Hibiya Park

The usual time for autumn leaves to change color in Tokyo is said to be between November and early December .

That said, the best time to see the leaves can vary depending on the type of tree, the location, and various weather conditions of the year, so we recommend checking the official website of the autumn foliage viewing spot to determine the best time to see the leaves.

Although autumn leaves are very beautiful, you should never break branches or tear off leaves . Just enjoy them with your eyes. If you want to take a photo with colored leaves, it's a good idea to use leaves that have fallen to the ground.

Depending on the location, there are areas where entry is prohibited. In some places, photography is also prohibited. If more people start being selfish and thinking, "It's okay to just take a little photo," entry to the surrounding areas may also be prohibited. Please enjoy yourself by following the local rules.

It's a great spot for photogenic of autumn leaves, but please remember to be considerate of your surroundings when taking photos . Selfie sticks and tripods may be a nuisance to those around you. In some places, their use is prohibited. Please be mindful of your surroundings and use with caution.

A big problem in Japanese tourist destinations is littering by tourists. This isn't limited to when viewing autumn leaves, but please be sure to take any trash you produce home with you.

Why not ask a professional photographer to take a commemorative photo of you with the autumn leaves of Japan?

With " Capture My Japan ," you can shoot at any location in Japan you like. The photographer in charge will handle any permission applications for locations that are difficult to obtain in Japanese. The photographer who can speak English will communicate closely with you while shooting, so even those who are not confident in Japanese will have no problem.
