8 hot cruises you’ll need to book at least 1 year in advance — maybe even 2!

Fran Golden

You might think that with all the cruise ships out there with the potential to hold thousands of passengers, you have all the time in the world to book a cruise.

However, some sailings can sell out a year or more before the ship even leaves the pier. That's especially true of unique itineraries or themed cruises. Additionally, certain cabin categories on many sailings are often snatched up quickly.

Don't get left behind on dry land when you could be relaxing at sea. Here are a few examples of cruises and cabin types you'll need to plan a year or more in advance.

World cruises

one year cruise trip

World cruises have always been hot sellers. Fans meticulously check emails, newsletters and social media, and often work with travel agents to be the first to know when their favorite cruise line puts out its latest multimonth itinerary, often years in advance. The plan: Book immediately to ensure you get your preferred cabin category.

The ability to work from anywhere has increased the stakes. It's not unusual for lines such as Viking , Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises to sell out their world cruises within days, hours or even minutes of them becoming available to book.

"Sometimes the cruises sell out even before they are publicly announced," said Rob Clabbers, president of Q Cruise + Travel in Chicago.

That was the case with a 150-day sailing on luxury line Regent's 700-passenger Seven Seas Mariner planned for 2025. It sold out in June 2022 (that's 2 1/2 years in advance) because clued-in past passengers filled the ship during its preview sale — even at fares ranging from $87,000 to $250,000. The public never had a chance to book.

Short-season destinations

If you are targeting a vacation in a destination that does not have a year-round cruising season, such as Antarctica or the Arctic , make your reservation a year in advance. New expedition ships are sailing in both markets, but they carry no more than 500 passengers. (Ships with more passengers are not allowed to make landings in Antarctica.) Well-established operators such as Abercrombie & Kent, which charters ships from Ponant , sell out Antarctica cruises a year or more in advance.

Other popular seasonal itineraries also fit into the must-book-a-year-in-advance category.

"If you wanted to circumnavigate Iceland, especially on small ships such as Windstar , you better plan well in advance as there are not that many sailings," Clabbers said.

The same is true if you have on your bucket list such places as the Northwest Passage, where sailings are limited. Viking, Seabourn and Ponant are among a handful of cruise lines offering them.

Alaska is another market where it pays to check itineraries as soon as they are announced, especially if you want to explore more remote ports on a small ship or hope to stay in a suite.

The top suites

one year cruise trip

On any cruise, the fanciest suites tend to sell out quickly because they are highly desired and limited in number. They also come with a bevy of attractive perks.

On select Norwegian Cruise Line ships, for example, guests in The Haven suite complex have access to a private lounge, pool, sundeck and restaurant. MSC Cruises ' MSC Yacht Club is a similar concept. Select Royal Caribbean ships have an exclusive suites-only restaurant and lounge, and a few even have a private sundeck for suite guests. Royal Genies (personal butlers) tend to the needs of those in the line's Royal Suite class , encompassing the fanciest accommodations.

According to Clabbers, you will also need to book a year in advance if you want to stay in a suite on a river ship with lines such as Uniworld, AmaWaterways and Viking. These accommodations are limited yet highly sought after on small vessels.

If you plan to book a luxury cruise , do so far in advance.

Repositioning cruises and one-off itineraries

When a ship is repositioning or otherwise doing an interesting one-off itinerary, demand can be huge. For example, a ship moving from Australia to Indonesia or from Tahiti to Australia and stopping in the South Pacific can be a big draw, more so than your typical ocean crossing.

"Some transatlantic repositioning cruises the lines can't sell for the life of them, which is why they are often so inexpensive," Clabbers said. "But other ones, especially on smaller ships and to destinations that are unique, it's a different story. They sell out well in advance."

Holiday sailings

Holiday and New Year's sailings tend to be in high demand, and holiday-themed sailings such as Disney Cruise Line 's Very Merrytime cruises are particularly popular. Keep this in mind and plan well in advance, especially if you hope to celebrate the holidays with your extended family and will require several cabins.

"What comes into play on holiday cruises is that children are off school, and so now you are talking about a multigenerational group going on a trip," Clabbers shared. "If you want to have a suite for the grandparents and a couple of nice rooms or suites close by for the children and grandchildren, those may be in limited supply."

New ships and routes

one year cruise trip

Fans of specific cruise lines get very excited when a new ship comes out and will book the inaugural sailing and other early sailings a year or more in advance. This is often the case with lines such as Disney Cruise Line (with Disney Treasure debuting in late 2024 and Disney Destiny in 2025) and Cunard (which launched Queen Anne in May 2024), as these lines don't often bring out new ships.

If a ship can brag of being the world's largest (Royal Caribbean's 7,600-passenger Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas ) or the world's most luxurious (Regent Seven Seas Cruises' 750-passenger Seven Seas Grandeur ), it is bound to attract an enthusiastic crowd and sell out far in advance.

Expect a surge in interest and early bookings when a ship moves to a new destination the line has not visited before, whether Hawaii , Norway or elsewhere. This is also the case when a cruise line expands its market, such as Viking (known for ocean and river sailings) launching expedition cruises .

Special event and themed cruises

Book a year in advance if you are looking for a cruise tied to a once-a-year event. These cruises are hot tickets. Examples include cherry blossom season in Japan, the Monaco Grand Prix, the Cannes Film Festival and Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.

Perhaps even more popular are cruises to rarer events, such as sailings to view the solar eclipse in 2026.

The same planning in advance applies to popular themed cruises , which tend to sell out with previous guests taking the majority of cabins. These include the annual Star Trek cruise and Outlaw Country Cruise, featuring live music, themed parties, celebrity meet-and-greets and enthusiastic fans. Sign up for updates to alert you when bookings open, and get on the waitlist as early as you can.

Pet-friendly cruises

one year cruise trip

Assistance dogs aside, there is only one option for sailing with your pet dog (or cat) : a transatlantic cruise on Cunard's Queen Mary 2. While you indulge in afternoon tea and attend dress-up affairs in fancy ballrooms, your pet is pampered in a posh kennel.

Space is very limited. The ship's kennels sell out a year or more in advance, often within a couple of days of the release of a new itinerary, according to Clabbers.

"In this case it's about the puppy not getting space rather than the human passenger," he said.

Bottom line

If you hope to sail around the world, cruise with your pup or be among the first passengers on a new ship, plan ahead. Special itineraries, themed cruises and certain suites and cabins are in high demand and often book up incredibly fast.

Don't dillydally. Whether you sign up for email alerts with your preferred cruise line or work with a travel agent to get the latest updates, staying informed and acting fast are vital to booking your dream cruise or luxury cabin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Full itineraries for world cruises typically last anywhere from around 100 to 180 days, though Royal Caribbean International 's Serenade of the Seas is currently sailing the longest world cruise at 274 days. If you're not able to set sail for three to five months (or longer), some cruise lines also offer select, shorter segments of their full world cruise itineraries or grand voyages, which are typically two to three months in length.

World cruise fares can vary significantly between cruise lines. Some lines advertise cruise-only fares, which do not include meals at specialty restaurants, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, excursions, some entertainment, or other expenses. On top of that, many cruise lines' base prices exclude port fees and taxes. Given the length of a world cruise, even small expenses can add up after several months on the ship and in ports around the globe. Typically, travelers can expect to spend a base fare of about $15,000 for an inside cabin and as much as $90,000 (or more) for luxury accommodations and an all-inclusive fare.

If you're considering sailing beyond 2025, Regent Seven Seas Cruises recently announced its 140-night 2027 world cruise, World of Splendor, sailing from Miami to New York. The voyage embarks on Jan. 11, 2027, aboard Seven Seas Splendor , and prices start at $91,499 per person. If you want to reserve the over-the-top Regent Suite, you'll need to budget an unheard-of $1.7 million for two guests ($839,999 per person, to be exact).

Regent Seven Seas' all-inclusive fares include almost everything you could need, including door-to-door luggage service, first and business class airfare, pre-cruise gala events, exclusive shoreside experiences, unlimited dry cleaning and laundry, prepaid gratuities, meals, open bars and lounges, unlimited Wi-Fi access, and more. Silversea also offers door-to-door pricing that includes private executive transfers, international business class flights, pre- and post-cruise hotels and transfers, baggage valet, all meals and beverages, butler service, bespoke special events, and other amenities.

Depending on the cruise line, you may receive many additional perks when booking a full world cruise, including shore excursions. All-inclusive luxury lines like Silversea and Regent Seven Seas offer a list of complimentary shore excursions in every port. In addition, Silversea hosts a bon voyage reception, a private dinner and an overnight hotel stay for world cruise guests. It also features exclusive world cruise cultural events in ports around the globe. If you're sailing with Regent Seven Seas, you'll also have pre-cruise gala events and exclusive shoreside experiences throughout the cruise.

Special inclusions, upgrades and other amenities are available with other lines that are not all-inclusive. For example, guests on boutique cruise line Azamara's 2025 world cruise will receive $25,000 in benefits, including $3,000 for shore excursions, 13 exclusive events and much more. Oceania's " simply MORE" offer includes $8,200 in shore excursion credit, as well as many other amenities.

If you're sailing with a larger cruise line, it's also possible to find deals that may include shore excursions or onboard credit you can use for booking tours. Holland America Line offers guests an early booking bonus that includes a list of additional perks, including one complimentary shore excursion, $2,000 per person in onboard credit ($4,000 for solo travelers) and more. MSC Cruises includes 15 free shore excursions and other perks when you book its world cruise.

You may want to consult with a travel agent specializing in cruises to see what additional perks they can offer if you book your world cruise through their agency.

Royal Caribbean International's 274-night Ultimate World Cruise, which set sail in December 2023, will visit all seven continents before guests disembark in September 2024.

Holland America Line's 132-day Grand World Voyage cruise aboard Volendam in 2026 will also visit seven continents, circumnavigating the globe. The epic journey will include a four-day Antarctic experience.

This 3-year Cruise Visits 135 Countries on 7 Continents — and It Might Cost Less Than You Pay in Rent

Welcome to the Work From Ship life.

one year cruise trip

Want to set sail and just keep going? Life at Sea Cruises just announced it’s accepting reservations on its first-ever, three-year cruise, which will travel 130,000 miles, visit 135 countries across seven continents, and stop in 375 ports of call, all aboard the MV Gemini .

At each port, the vessel will stay docked for multiple days to allow its passengers to explore at their leisure. It visits 13 wonders of the world, including Egypt's Pyramids of Giza and Mexico's Chichén Itzá, and more than 100 islands, including numerous Caribbean and Central American visits. The cruise also spends 98 days in South American and Antarctica.

The ship provides everything one would need to live at sea for several years, including spacious cabins, dining and entertainment options, recreational areas like a wellness center, sun deck, and pool, and plentiful work spaces for those who want to live the digital nomad life at sea. That includes a business center with meeting rooms, 14 offices, and a business library for all Zoom call needs.

“Professionals need connectivity, the right amenities, and the functionality to perform their jobs. There is no other cruise product that offers this sort of flexibility to their customers,” said Mikael Petterson, the managing director of Life at Sea Cruises, in a statement released to Travel + Leisure .

The ship also has other practical amenities, including a 24-hour hospital, which offers guests free medical visits, learning experiences for guests like lectures and classes, and volunteer opportunities at various ports.

“Life at Sea Cruises offers the ultimate cruise without having to sacrifice the comforts of home,” Irina Strembitsky, director of sales and marketing, added in the statement. “It’s your home at sea with the world as your backyard.”

The three-year voyage departs from Istanbul on Nov. 1, 2023, with additional pick-ups in Barcelona and Miami later in 2023. Pricing begins at $29,999 per year. The company also offers payment options starting from $2,499 per month, which includes food and beverage. Cabin options range from 130-square-foot interior rooms to 260-square-foot balcony suites. Passengers who went on nine-month cruise around the world reveal what they really thought about the experience

Passengers who went on nine-month cruise around the world reveal what they really thought about the experience

One couple said that 'nothing can prepare you' for a nine-month cruise.

Niamh Shackleton

Niamh Shackleton

Avid cruisers who embarked Royal Caribbean International's nine-month long cruise have shared what the experience was like.

Dubbed ‘The Ultimate World Cruise’, passengers set sail in December 2023 and people on board were quick to start documenting their travels on social media .

Angie Linderman was one person on board the Serenade of the Seas ship and she took to TikTok to reveal the reality of what it was like living on a cruise ship for so long .

People online shared both the good and the bad things they experienced - including the flooding that ravaged parts of the ship at the beginning of the year.

But after months at sea, those on The Ultimate World Cruise have ended their travels, with the lengthly journey drawing to a close on September 10.

With this in mind, travellers are now reflecting on the amazing experience and issued some well-needed advice to anyone else hoping to do the same thing.

Audrey and Joe Martucci were just two of the hundreds of people on the cruise and, despite being veteran cruisers, Joe admitted that 'nothing can prepare you for nine months'.

Before setting sail, the couple sold their car and had their nephew move into their Florida home to mind the property while they were gone.

One thing many people will wonder is the food situation on the ship and what it's like - something which Joe has lifted the lid on.

Joe and Audrey Martucci were onboard the mammoth cruise (Joe and Audrey Martucci)

"It's just like at home, you open your refrigerator and go, ‘That's all we have,’ and you decide to go out instead of eating (at home)," he told USA Today.

While they got understandably a bit bored of what on offer sometimes, Joe added that the culinary team on Serenade of the Seas 'upped their game' for the nine-month cruise.

Elsewhere Audrey said that they and many others came to love sea days as it meant they could get some rest.

The European leg of the trip was particularly action-packed and port-heavy, but Audrey didn't realize that it was an option to stay on the ship and not go on an excursion.

She admitted that this was 'a huge revelation' for her.

Meanwhile, fellow passenger Adita Larson revealed her favorite moment on the trip was in Antarctica .

Brande Lake was one of the hundreds of passengers on the cruise (Facebook/Brandee Lake)

She told the news outlet: "You can't video and you can’t photograph how beautiful it is to stand in front of those icebergs and see them right in front of your eyes so close."

Brandee Lake was on board the mammoth cruise too and she gave some very important advice about packing after taking three suitcases with her.

"I pared it down, and it's still just too much,” she revealed. "It's kind of like your own closet: you really only wear about 10 percent to 20 percent of it."

In particular, Brandee said she felt she'd taken too many shoes with her and rarely wore the accessories she packed.

She went on to speak about the neighborly vibe that there is on the ship and hailed it as being 'just like any other community'.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Deals Guide

When it comes to planning the ultimate getaway, there are so many reasons why cruise vacations rank among the most popular travel options. First of all, they’re completely stress-free. On a cruise vacation, all the planning is taken care of by the cruise line — from the destinations you sail to and the shore excursions available at each port, to a full range of entertainment and activities happening onboard every day. If you’re not a planner, or if the only things you’re looking to focus on during your getaway is savoring great food, relaxing, and soaking up the sights, cruise vacations are the way to go. A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages. Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your experience even more all-inclusive, you can opt for beverage and specialty dining packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet. On top of all that, the cruise line presents frequent limited-time offers and seasonal sales, making it easy to score big savings when booking your vacation.

I’m ready to start planning my cruise — how can I score the best deals?

Whether you’re looking to book a short getaway or a longer adventure to far-flung destinations, Royal Caribbean makes it easy to save big on everything from your cruise fare to special experiences onboard and onshore. The first step to making sure you get the best deals is to join the cruise line’s email list. Once you’ve signed up, you’ll receive regular updates on all the latest offers, like deals by destination , kids sail free promotions and flash sales. The savings don’t end when you book your cruise, though. Once you’ve made a reservation, you’ll also receive notifications about special offers for onboard experiences — like discounts on beverage and specialty dining packages, shore excursions, spa services, and more via My Royal Cruise .

Does it pay to plan ahead, or should I wait until the last minute?

It’s an age-old question — does the early bird really get the worm, or are there perks to taking a “wait-and-see” approach? If you’re booking a cruise vacation, you’ll find there are benefits to both strategies. Planning ahead is a great way to score big savings , as Royal Caribbean often runs early saver deals to guests booking well in advance. It’s also pretty safe to assume prices usually go up as availability goes down the closer you get to your sail date, so booking ahead is a surefire way to lock in a great rate. That said, booking a cruise at the last minute can also yield some unexpected savings — but only if the itinerary you’re interested in hasn’t sold out yet.

If you can be flexible when it comes to your travel dates, you’ll have your pick of unbeatable savings. Popular vacation dates — like the holidays , spring break , summer vacation and week long cruises — sometimes see the highest prices (though you might get lucky with a seasonal sale). If you have the flexibility to travel during the shoulder season or off season, you’ll likely enjoy big savings on popular stateroom categories , like Balconies and even Suites. The deals don’t only apply to your cruise fare, though. Once you’ve booked your vacation, you could easily unlock discounts and specials on add-ons, including beverage and dining packages , Voom® high speed internet, shore excursions, and amazing experiences not included in your cruise fare — like a day of pampering at Vitality SM Spa, a behind-the-scenes tour of the ship’s galley followed by brunch, VIP seating at shows, and much more.

How can I maximize the value of my cruise vacation?

There are plenty of ways to get more bang for your buck when you sail on a Royal Caribbean cruise. Every ship in the fleet offers a range of delicious complimentary dining options , but you can dig into even more crave-worthy flavor by purchasing a Specialty Dining Package for less ahead of your cruise. Add a Specialty Beverage Package — which includes unlimited alcoholic beverages, soda, and more — and your experience is as close to all-inclusive as it gets. And with so many complimentary shows and attractions onboard, you can easily fill every sea day without spending a single dollar extra.

Royal Caribbean also offers deals based on departure ports  and destinations, so if you’re a flexible traveler looking for great savings, you can plan your next vacation around which itineraries are on sale. Just check your email or visit RoyalCaribbean.com/cruise-deals to stay up to date on promotions, sales and special offers. You can even browse sailings and deals by homeport, destination and season, so you can rest assured you’re getting the best possible deal no matter when or where in the world you choose to set sai.

Shocking scenes as 12-year-old tragically dies on cruise ship named Harmony of the Seas

Passengers aboard the Harmony of the Seas cruise ship witnessed a tragic event as a 12-year-old boy lost his life after accidentally falling from the balcony of the ship’s 14th deck. The incident took place on the final night of the voyage, while the boy was playing with his friends.

Texas trip tragedy

The ship was en route to the Texas city of Galveston, following a Caribbean itinerary where many families were enjoying their stay on board. According to the British newspaper  The Sun , several people saw the boy, who was celebrating a relative’s birthday, fall through the ship’s interior area, which is filled with bars and restaurants.

Cruise staff did everything they could to try to save the boy, but their efforts were in vain. Authorities have launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the 12-year-old’s death.

Harmony of the Seas: fourth largest

The Harmony of the Seas cruise ship has the capacity to accommodate over 8,000 people, including both passengers and crew. This vessel, owned by Royal Caribbean International, stands taller than a 25-story building and ranks as the fourth-largest passenger ship in the world.

It’s described as a “floating city” with nearly 3,000 cabins, 20 restaurants, 23 swimming pools, and a park featuring over 50 trees and 10,000 plants – a remarkable testament to human engineering on a grand scale.

However, despite its size and all its luxuries, this cruise has another dark chapter in its history. In 2019, a 16-year-old girl tragically died after falling while climbing from a balcony on the eighth deck.

A would-be passenger aboard much-delayed residential cruise Villa Vie Odyssey claims she has been thrown off due to comments she made in a WhatsApp group.

Jenny Phenix, 68 and from Florida , USA , sold her possessions to join the three year round-the-world voyage with the intention of stopping off in Miami along the way to pick up belongings for the rest of the cruise.

Passengers calling the ship home have been stranded on the vessel in Northern Ireland for three months while awaiting a new departure date.

Ms Phenix’s comments on WhatsApp about when the ship would set sail, as well as concerns about the duration of refurbishments and having a temporary cabin, has led to her being removed from the cruise all together.

She was told her contract had been cancelled for impacting community morale.

The Telegraph reports that Villa Vie Residences chief operating officer, Kathy Villalba, informed Ms Phenix: “We have received over a dozen formal complaints from residents regarding your continuous complaints and negativity. This behaviour has significantly impacted the morale and wellbeing of other passengers.

“Given the overwhelming feedback, we must cancel your contract permanently to uphold the wellbeing and satisfaction of our community.”

Ms Phenix, who has been living out of a suitcase since December 2023, told The Telegraph : “These were private conversations – I posted nothing on social media platforms. The frustration among the residents grew after every delay. I tended to be one of the more outspoken in asking important questions. Many of the residents thanked me privately for speaking up for the entire group.”

It’s not the first time Ms Phenix has encountered twists in the road when it comes to around-the-world cruises. The Florida-based Life at Sea residential ship scheme filed for bankruptcy July 23 2024, owing her thousands of dollars in the process.

Ms Phenix has now returned to Florida, having joined the last leg of Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas nine-month voyage, but not without experiencing some “emotional devastation”. She now plans to stay with her daughter until she comes up with “a whole new plan for my life”.

The Independent has contacted the Villa Vie Residences for comment.

In a statement shared with The Telegraph , Mike Petterson, the chief executive of Villa Vie Residences, said: “Ms Phenix broke multiple terms and conditions and signed a non-disclosure agreement. The founding residents voted and agreed to uphold her suspension and we plan on respecting that decision. We have nothing else to comment on the ongoing dispute.”

Villa Vie Odyssey was scheduled to set sail from Northern Ireland in May 2024. It was due to visit all seven continents, with stops at more than 425 ports in 147 destinations, but has been stalled due to the ship requiring work to the rudders and the gearbox, among other repairs and tests.

Earlier this week, YouTube vloggers MidLife Cruising , who have been detailing their experiences on board the delayed Odyssey , revealed they’d received an email from Villa Vie Residence’s CEO on Monday 9 September announcing there were “still problems” and that the company had extended a request for passengers to cover their food and accommodation expenses for “at least the next seven days.”

Ealier this week, Mr Petterson told The Independent : “While the road has had its challenges, every decision we’ve made is focused on the wellbeing and safety of our residents. We have supported our residents with trips around Europe, and spent over $2m in hotel stays and trips to accommodate and entertain them while Odyssey has been getting ready for launch.

“The hard work continues, and we are on track to welcome passengers onboard by the end of this week. We look forward to launching with pride and purpose, knowing we’re not just building a ship but a united community at sea together.”
