History [ ]

Pre-series [ ].

During the early 2380s she was a Federation Starfleet officer who was assigned to help Admiral Jean-Luc Picard in his mission to help the Romulan people evacuate Romulus. She was also married to a man named Jae and had a son named Gabriel. She became very close to Picard during this time, affectionately calling him "JP".

Musiker's work on the evaucation episode was all consuming, leading her to becoming estranged from her family. After the Zhat Vash attacked and largely destroyed Mars, the Federation refused to continue the evacuation efforts, and Picard resigned in disgust from Starfleet. Musiker also left Starfleet at that time, believing the Tal Shiar was behind the attack but unable to prove it.

She spent the next 15 years in a deep depression, struggling with rage, humiliation, and substance abuse. By 2399 she was living in a small home in the Vasquez Rocks of California.

Season 1 [ ]

In 2399, Picard came to her seeking assistance to save the life of a young woman named Soji Asha , who was in danger from the Zhat Vash . She was able to put Picard in touch with her friend Cristóbal "Cris" Rios, who had his own ship named the La Sirena . She accompanied Picard on his mission to save Asha's life and prevent a group of synthetic aliens from destroying all organic life in the galaxy. During a visit to Freecloud, she tried to reconnect with her son Gabe and Romulan daughter-in-law Pel, but Gabe rebuffed her. Learning that Picard was dying of a brain abnormality she came to forgive her friend and mentor, who she admitted she loved as much as she would a member of her family, and was there when Picard's original body died. She helped Elnor deal with the grief of losing a father figure, but was later happy to learn that Picard had survived and was living in a new synthetic body that did not have the brain abnormality that killed his human body.

Season 2 [ ]

Sometime between 2399 and 2401, Musiker returned to Starfleet. Holding the rank of Commander, she was assigned to the USS Excelsior as operations officer, and was part of a fleet that responded to a Borg incursion into Federation space.

The Borg Queen attacked the USS Stargazer before Picard, Annika Hansen , Rios, Elnor, Musiker, and the Stargazer 's crew were thrown into an alternate 2401 created by Q, where humans abhorred the aliens they came across and sought to dominate them.

In an attempt to find out what Q changed in the past, Picard, Hansen, Rios, Elnor, and Musiker used the Borg Queen to travel back to 2024 to prevent Q from taking Renee Picard, an ancestor of Jean-Luc Picard, off of a mission to Europa, one of Jupiter's moons.

The group succeeds in bringing back their own timeline, even though they had trouble blending into 21st century Earth, and Musiker begins a lesbian relationship with Hansen.

Season 3 [ ]

Later in 2401 Musiker was working for Starfleet Intelligence as an undercover operative, complete with a cover story that she had been kicked out of Starfleet due to her addictions and theft of information. Musiker worked to cultivate various underworld contacts so that she could gather intelligence on them. Operating from Captain Cristóbal Rios' former ship La Sirena she pieced together that a terrorist attack was about to take place on M'Talas Prime but arrived too late to stop the attack, which consisted of causing a portal to open up beneath the Starfleet recruitment center swallowing the building whole and dropping it on another part of the city.

After the attack Musiker reported in to her handler, who said the investigation was being halted and that Musiker was to disengage. Musiker tracked the weapon back to the Ferengi gangster Sneed and went to confront him. Sneed saw through her deception and was about to kill her when Musiker's SI handler showed up and dispatched Sneed and his men with ease. The handler picked the barely concious Musiker up off the floor and revealed himself to be one Worf, Son of Mogh while grumbling that he had told her not to engage.

  • The Vasquez Rocks where Musiker lived was the real-world site of many an on location shot in various Star Trek productions all the way back to the original series, standing in for a number of alien worlds including Vulcan. The scenes at Musiker's home marked the first time in a Star Trek production that the area was portrayed as itself instead of some alien location.

The Radical Importance of Seven and Raffi's Conflict in Star Trek: Picard

A queer couple who not only live but who work through their issues is revolutionary.

Seven of Nine and Raffi from Star Trek: Picard.

StarTrek.com

Arriving on the heels of pandemic restrictions and a permanently altered world, the premiere of Star Trek: Picard ’s second season sparked the entire spectrum of anticipation in fans, including myself. The first season ended with our ragtag team of characters assembling on La Sirena for yet-to-be-determined adventures. Right before that, Seven of Nine and Raffi Musiker held hands in an equally open-ended move that sent the internet into a frenzy, confirming that both characters were bi. Many viewers tuned in to the second season full of questions — Would they still be together? To what extent would their relationship be acknowledged? Would they stay together? Would they survive 2024? That last question may come across as a little dramatic, but fans of queer relationships in mainstream fiction know that the narrative does not often favor the queer characters,  to the extent that “ Bury Your Gays ” is a well-documented trope. Audiences are conditioned to expect queer relationships to fail – or that one or both characters do not survive. We saw this on another series airing concurrently with Picard ’s second season, when Killing Eve ’s Villanelle met her untimely demise soon after she and Eve Polastri shared their first kiss. Picard luckily did not fall into this trope; but saddled with this expectation, the second season was not the most comfortable experience. Seven and Raffi spent a large portion of the season in stressful, action-filled situations, but they also spent it in conflict with each other. They argued. Raffi brought up Seven’s commitment issues. Seven brought up Raffi’s problem with manipulating others. Amidst the backdrop of a high-stakes season, it was, at times, rough to watch.

Star Trek: Picard -

Yet, that was not necessarily a bad thing. Upon a closer watch, it was quite radical. When Seven and Raffi went looking for Rios, they disagreed about how to approach their search; but they talked it out and occasionally deferred to the other’s point of view. When Seven brought up the issue she has with Raffi’s manipulation, Raffi not only agreed to talk through the issue but also trusted Seven with a vulnerable moment regarding Elnor that contextualizes  – and importantly does not excuse – Raffi’s actions. At points throughout the season, Seven and Raffi set aside their conflict to be there for each other, including Raffi’s struggle to come to terms with the loss of Elnor, compounding issues with her estrangement from her son Gabe, and Seven’s triggering experience of having to think like the Borg Queen in order to locate Agnes. Through Seven and Raffi, Picard not only makes the significant move of showing us a queer couple that survives but also depicts individuals in a relationship that that works through conflict with intention, respect and non-resentful compromise.

Star Trek: Picard -

That their story was told is important – not only from a representation perspective within fiction, but also because in real life, templates for functional relationships between queer individuals are scarce. People who have managed to enter and stay in long-term relationships know the slight discrepancy between reality and fiction – that is, partnerships rarely reach a “happily ever after” type of ending. In reality, the relationships that work are the ones that thrive through endless obstacles, not despite them. Around the world, queer couples encounter obstacles to our relationships that extend far beyond representation in fiction – our hurdles are also institutional. Last year, within the US, 13 states signed anti-LGBTQ bills into law. This summer’s repeal of Roe v. Wade has placed similar privacy-based laws, including the right to a federally recognized same-sex marriage, into jeopardy. And depending on who we are and how we grew up, we may experience limited access to resources like support from our families and the communities we were born into. For these reasons, Seven and Raffi’s story is vital – not just the part where Seven and Raffi both survive the season but for audiences of all orientations to see a queer couple on-screen talk through conflict, argue, compromise, and deeply respect each other’s points of view. Seven and Raffi provide us with a story that helps fill a scarcity we have in fiction and in reality — a template for a queer relationship in which each individual lives and lives through conflict, together.

Star Trek: Picard -

I ardently hope to see more of it – for me, for the people I love, and for people I don’t know who look to Star Trek for guidance in this turbulent time in history.

"The Stakes Are Higher Than Ever": Bleach Creator Reveals More on TYBW Part 3 in Major Production Update

Netflix's the sandman season 2 gets promising update from cluracan actor, only murders in the building season 4 gave fans the perfect fakeout.

The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Picard Season 3, Episode 10, "The Last Generation," now streaming on Paramount+.

The closing moments of the series finale of Star Trek: Picard focused heavily on the legacy characters and their kids. Yet, Michelle Hurd's Raffaela Musiker is a character original to Picard who gets her happy ending, too. In a bad place at the start of the season, what Worf did for Raffi in the finale helped her get her life back.

Raffi was introduced in the first season of Picard as the person Jean-Luc worked with to try to save the Romulans from disaster. Starfleet rejected their idea, and Picard resigned from Starfleet in protest. Over the 14 years between that event and the start of the series, she described her life as "one long slide into humiliation and rage." She was dishonorably discharged, became addicted to drugs and lost connection to her ex-husband, son and granddaughter. Throughout the events of the series, Raffi got herself back together and even rejoined Starfleet. Because of her checkered past, she was recruited by Starfleet intelligence to go undercover as a corrupt officer to investigate the theft at Daystrom Vault. In the Season 3 premiere of Star Trek: Picard , her ex-husband didn't believe that she was working anything other than her addiction. Worf, her handler for Starfleet intelligence, fixed that for her by leaking classified information.

Worf Leaked Raffi's Classified Service Record for Her Family

At the end of Picard Season 2, Raffi was struggling to readjust to her second Starfleet career. Assigned to the USS Excelsior, she was eventually recruited by Starfleet intelligence to investigate the theft at Daystrom . Another legacy TNG character who got (permanent) closure, Ro Laren, was the member of Starfleet Intelligence running the investigation. However, Commander Ro recruited Worf as an asset, too. So, she communicated with Raffi through Worf.

When Worf and Raffi eventually teamed up , the two formed a fast friendship. He recognized in Raffi the "long slide of humiliation and rage" and started to mentor her. As he told Raffi when they met properly, he's "been working on [him]self." He helped her channel her anger and "warrior spirit," while finding inner peace. Worf is not known to be a hugger, so their embrace at the end of their scene means she has a special place in his heart. As her former intelligence handler, it means he also had access to her classified Starfleet file. It showed her dozens of court-martial-worthy offenses. The file also detailed her classified commendations for valor, likely earned by helping Picard save the galaxy for, now, a third time.

Currently unaffiliated with Starfleet, as a former Klingon Ambassador and current galactic legend, Starfleet has little power over Worf. Leaking her file is not just what a "maverick" would do, but, as Raffi says, a friend. By releasing classified information about her heroism, Raffi's family is finally able to see her for the person she truly is. It also completely ruins her ability to work undercover in Starfleet Intelligence, meaning she's free to be Seven of Nine's Number One on the USS Enterprise-G. While Raffi earned her place, Worf gave her the freedom to take it by leaking her classified Starfleet service record to the press.

Raffi Is Star Trek: Picard's Best Original Character

When Star Trek: Picard debuted , the Season 1 story centered on a Starfleet that creator Gene Roddenberry wouldn't recognize. Raffi was another example of this, everything the father of Star Trek said his officers shouldn't be. She was prone to anger and violence. She disobeyed orders and got into fights. Rather than be treated for addiction, she accepted a dishonorable discharge. However, Jean-Luc recognized greatness in Raffi, and her under-Starfleet's-sensors connections helped Picard circumvent Romulan spies in Starfleet. Season 1 also set up her damaged family dynamic, setting the character on the path to making it right.

In Season 2, Raffi did what any good Starfleet person without a family of their own does -- she found another. She metaphorically adopted Elnor, a Romulan Qowat Milat monk who enrolled in Starfleet. Raffi and Seven of Nine also started a romantic relationship that soured because of the distance their work put between them between the finale and the Season 3 premiere.

Reunited with Starfleet, Seven of Nine and her family , Raffi has a lot to thank Worf for. Leaking her classified service record helped her "fix" her life. But, more importantly, his friendship and guidance during their mission helped settle her inner turmoil. And he turned her into a scary-good fighter, as evidenced by her fight with the Changeling terrorists in "Surrender." After all, as Worf told Riker, "Swords are fun." While Raffi may not have the fun of a swordfight anytime soon, she has a life that is full of much more love and connection than when the series began.

Starfleet career [ ].

As a lieutenant commander, Musiker helped Picard formulate a new plan to evacuate Romulans from the Romulan supernova after the 2385 Attack on Mars destroyed the Romulan rescue armada. She gathered information for a proposal to use mothballed ships and reserve duty personnel to carry out the operation instead. However, Starfleet rejected the proposal and accepted Picard's protest resignation. Musiker was distraught, as she knew she would be dismissed from Starfleet as well. She also suspected Tal Shiar involvement in these events, but admitted that she could not discern a plausible motive.

Musiker was Admiral Jean-Luc Picard 's first officer aboard the Federation starship USS Verity in the year 2385, during their ongoing mission to relocate Romulans from planets that were threatened by the Hobus supernova. Musiker, with the rank of lieutenant commander, was Starfleet's leading analyst specializing in the affairs of the Romulan Star Empire . During the course of the long mission, she had taken to calling Picard by his initials, "J.L.", dismissing the formality of calling him by his rank.

The Verity traveled to the Romulan colony at Yuyat Beta, in preparation for relocating the 10,000 colonists. Musiker and Picard were asked by Major-Domus Athus to beam to the planet to visit the colony leaders alone. Picard and Musiker were shocked to learn there was a native population of humanoids, 4 to 5 million strong. When Picard protested evacuating just the Romulans, Governor Shiana had Picard and Musiker imprisoned, cutting them off from the Verity in orbit. ( PIC - Countdown comic: "Issue 1")

After Admiral Picard's resignation in 2385, Raffi began a long decline, eventually losing her security clearance and position in Starfleet. By 2399, she was estranged from her husband and son, and living in a small home at Vasquez Rocks. She had become acquainted with Cristobal Rios well before then, having said they had known each other for years. (PIC episodes : "Maps and Legends", "Stardust City Rag", "The Impossible Box")

After career [ ]

Raffi Musiker, 2399

Raffi Musiker in 2399

Musiker described her life after Starfleet as "one long slide into humiliation and rage". By 2399, she lived alone in a small house at Vasquez Rocks. That year, after meeting Dahj Asha, Picard reached out to Musiker to enlist her support for a mission to seek out Bruce Maddox. She was reluctant to speak to Picard until he revealed that Romulan assassins were operating secretly on Earth . (PIC episodes : "Maps and Legends", "The End is the Beginning")

Return to Starfleet [ ]

Raffi Musiker, 2401

Commander Musiker in 2401

By 2401, Musiker returned to Starfleet with the rank of Commander and was assigned to the USS Excelsior as its operations officer. She also watched over Cadet Elnor who was assigned to the ship. ( PIC episode : " The Star Gazer ")

Before, Elnor's training could begin, he and Raffi found themselves in an alternate timeline where the Federation was replaced by a militaristic Confederation of Earth , whose mission was to root out all other life in the galaxy. Fortunately, Raffi was able to keep Elnor from being executed and found herself reunited with Picard, Rios, Agnes and Seven, who'd all been deposited into that timeline by Q . Elnor was shot by the husband of the alternate Seven of Nine and ultimately died of his wounds. ( PIC episodes : " Penance ", " Assimilation ")

Elnor's death hit Musiker particularly hard, since she blamed herself for encouraging him to pursue a career in Starfleet. ( PIC episode : " Penance ")

Aboard the CSS La Sirena , the group, used a captive Borg Queen that was scheduled for public execution to travel to the 21st century to correct the timeline. ( PIC episode : " Assimilation ")

Paired with Seven, Musiker traveled to Los Angeles to seek out the mysterious "Watcher" mentioned by the Queen during their journey. Along the way, they were forced to rescue Rios, who was injured and later arrested by immigration authorities. ( PIC episodes : " Watcher ", " Fly Me to the Moon ")

It was soon discovered that Agnes had been possessed by the Borg Queen and was loose in Los Angeles. Teamed with Dr. Adam Soong, an ambitious geneticist, the Jurati-Queen intended to seize La Sirena with mercenaries Soong provided her to act as improvised Borg drones. ( PIC episodes : " Monsters ", " Mercy ")

Raffi and Seven fought to defend the ship, but Seven was impaled through the stomach by one of the Queen's tentacles. The mind of Dr. Jurati, fighting for control of her body, eventually convinced the Queen to save her life with nanoprobes, returning Seven's Borg implants. ( PIC episode : " Hide and Seek ")

After Q returned them to their own time, Musiker was thrilled to see Elnor alive and well in the corrected timeline. In addition, Picard used his authority to give their leading authority on the Borg, Seven, a provisional field commission of captain and command of the Stargazer to replace Rios, who had remained in the 21st century. Following the reveal that the Borg Queen attacking the ship was in fact Jurati trying to get their help to deal with a threatening galactic event, Starfleet and Jurati's Collective made common cause to stop the destructive wave. ( PIC episode : " Farewell ")

Starfleet Intelligence [ ]

Raffaela Musiker, 2401 excursion jacket

Commander Musiker, Starfleet Intelligence

Later that year, Musiker was on an undercover assignment on M'talas Prime for Starfleet Intelligence . She worked on a case involving experimental weapons technology taken from Daystrom Station, an offsite location of the Daystrom Institute. Using information from an Orion drug dealer, Musiker was able to identify the "Red Lady" mentioned by the thieves as a statue of Captain Rachel Garrett at the Starfleet Recruitment center in District Seven. However, she was too late to stop the attack and watched as the recruitment center was destroyed.( PIC episode : " The Next Generation ")

Raffi went to M'talas Prime to talk to Sneed but the Ferengi double-crossed her and drugged her just before showing her the head of Lurak T'Luco. Worf arrived and killed Sneed's guards before decapitating Sneed with his Kur'leth . As they left, Worf rebuked Raffi and told her, "I told you do not engage". ( PIC episodes : , " Disengage ")

First officer of the USS Enterprise -G [ ]

USS Enterprise-G command crew

Commander Raffi Musiker was assigned to the USS Enterprise -G as Captain Seven's first officer

In 2402, Musiker was assigned to newly rechristened USS Enterprise -G as Captain Seven's First officer. She was present when Ensign Jack Crusher reported for duty aboard the Enterprise and remarked that Starfleet saw fit to give a thief, a pirate and a spy their own ship. The Enterprise later embarked on their shakedown cruise. ( PIC episode : " The Last Generation ")

Personal life [ ]

When Musiker served under Picard, they had a close relationship; she regularly addressed him by the nickname "JL". (PIC episode : "The End is the Beginning")

Musiker was fond of Saurian brandy and Chateau Picard, in particular the '86 vintage. She had a habit of inhaling snakeleaf, which caused her the side effect of paranoia. (PIC episodes : "Maps and Legends", "The End is the Beginning")

Background information [ ]

Raffi Musiker was played by Michelle Hurd.

According to the PIC Season 1 press kit, Musiker was a veteran Starfleet Intelligence agent specializing in Romulan affairs and a "formidable tactician".

Apocrypha [ ]

Before her first on-screen appearance, Raffi Musiker was featured in the Star Trek: Picard - Countdown prequel comic book. According to the comic, she was Picard's first officer on the USS Verity in 2385, during the mission to relocate Romulans threatened by the supernova, and was noted as "Starfleet's foremost analyst on Romulan affairs."

"Musiker" is German for "musician".

Interview: Michelle Hurd On Raffi/Seven In ‘Star Trek: Picard’ Season 3, And Hopes For Spin-off

star trek wiki raffi

| February 12, 2023 | By: Anthony Pascale 59 comments so far

TrekMovie had a chance to talk to members of the cast and crew of Star Trek: Picard season 3 at the Hollywood premiere. Michelle Hurd who spoke to us about how Raffi is changing in the new season and her work with a certain TNG actor. She also talks about her hopes for a spin-off series.

[Minor spoilers ahead]

Terry Matalas has said that he “ reinvented ” Raffi for season 3. Were you involved in this, and how did you feel about moving the character in a new direction?

Actually, near the end of the second season, Terry called me into his office to pitch me this idea. And he literally said, he wants to bring out the superspy that is Raffi. That was what she did for Starfleet. This is all her skills. But then he added, like “I want to do a super spy Raffi like in the Bourne Identity .” And I was like,” Excuse me What? Bourne Identity ? Sign me up. Absolutely.” I mean, that’s all you had to say. How could I say no to that?

Terry also talked about how Raffi and Worf cross paths, which means you get to work with…

It’s fabulous! I work with Michael Dorn!

In the trailer, We can even see you get into a fight…

I do! There’s a lot of stuff that goes on with Raffi and Worf. Absolutely.

And you are doing your own stunts?

Yep. For all my stuff I’ve done like, almost always on any production, I do my own stunts.

star trek wiki raffi

Raffi (Michelle Hurd) and Worf (Michael Dorn) fight in final trailer

You have done this character for two seasons, so it should get easier, but with all these changes, would you say season 3 was your biggest challenge?

Biggest challenge? Maybe, but honestly, it’s the most satisfying. It was really yummy. I was excited to do all that stuff. As an actor, when you’re pushed to do a little bit beyond what you normally do, it’s so satisfying. So I say challenge, yes, but I say it was literally a gift.

Beyond the super spy aspect, there are more layers to Raffi in season 3. What would you say is the biggest difference on an emotional level?

I wanted to make sure, because we know Raffi is a recovering addict, or I should say she’s an addict because we’ve seen her go up and down. And I really wanted to make sure that we didn’t just like all of a sudden show up and we’re like, “Hey, I’m fine. I used to be an addict and I feel really good!” Because that’s not true, you know? I wanted to make sure that we didn’t just pass that over. So what I really love about Raffi’s journey is that you still see that she has these stresses. She is still an addict and struggling, and going one day at a time. But she’s persevering. She’s strong. And you’ll see a lot. Raffi’s always going to be complicated.

star trek wiki raffi

Raffi in the final trailer

Does it feel like a new show? There are a lot of changes for the season with cast members, new cinematographer, new composer, new sets…

New everything! I don’t know if I’d say it’s felt like a new show because we have these legacy characters. So it was almost like they came on and reinvented it, in a way. But I have to say, it’s interesting because I’m first-season Picard . There is a little bit of how these people are coming on and I’m like, “Oh that’s cool, But this is my gig!”

Besides a certain Sir Patrick Stewart, you are the only series regular to make it through.

Yeah, I know. And I’m so grateful.

When we talked ahead of season 2, you and Jeri responded very positively to my suggestion of a Seven/Raffi spin-off. Lots of fans have talked about this idea. How much thought or discussion have you put into this notion of staying with the role?

I love Raffi and I also think that she has an important point of view. I think she’s necessary. There’s more things that her voice can speak to. And I absolutely adore Raffi and Seven. Raffi loves Seven, period. No matter what, she’s going to love Seven until the end of time. If you can think about how many adventures we could have, all the different kinds of trouble that those two characters could get into, I’m all aboard a spin-off. So you guys, if you like this, if you want that, make a lot of noise. Be bold, be brave, get out there and let us all know.

“ Besides a certain Sir Patrick Stewart, you are the only series regular to make it through.”

Jeri Ryan might have something to say about that.

Ryan was guest star in S1

That seems awfully nitpicky, but I guess that’s Trek. Fair enough.

…from the franchise that gave us 10 eps of Prodigy called Season 1 volume 2 over a year after the first 10 eps…instead of just calling it Season 2.

Instead of New Math, we have Trek Math. LOL

You just wont let this go will you? 😂

It wasn’t a year btw, it was around 7 months of a gap.

But if you remember they also took a break between the first 5 episodes and the second 5, so I guess by that logic we have already seen 3 seasons of Prodigy and should be all looking forward to seeing season 4 coming to our screens sometime this year 🎉

So you are saying I exaggerated a bit to make my point? That would never happen, right? ;-)

“Michelle Hurd, you’re the last remaining original actor on Survivor: Picard. Tell us your strategy to keep from being voted off the island.”

Hmm, maybe this could work…

My name is Raffaela “Raffi” Musiker. I used to be a spy. Then I got burned…

A Trek version of Burn Notice? Could work. I’d say Seven would be more suitable for a Trek version of The Equalizer – alllllthough Raffi’s character would work well in that concept too.

Reading between the lines here, could it be that given Michelle Yeoh’s continued availability issues that they may instead rework the section 31 series around Raffi/ Michelle Hurd?

I mean this super spy stuff is seeming to come out of nowhere… I doubt that’s accidental?

That would be a hell of a lot better outcome. Although I am personally not a fan of spy stories.

Spy stuff is hugely popular right now.

I’m not surprised it got woven into this season. That doesn’t sell me on the idea of a Next Next Generation show where espionage is the major focus though.

Giving Raffi credibility and development as a spy, especially mentored by Worf, seems a good way to advance her character in a way that recaptures the potential we saw in the opening episodes of Picard S1. It doesn’t mean that it would be her role in any spin-off series though.

I suspect that the Michelle Yeoh led series is still a possibility if she wants it. Given her top priority is to get adventurous roles that don’t often come to women in their 50s, they may still be offering something she really wants to do.

Raffi was originally billed as an intelligence officer in season one, it was just never made the focus in the season itself and look like it was basically dropped completely in season 2 outside of her hacking stuff I guess.

Matalas is just showcasing what the character was suppose to be originally. Sure intelligence officer doesn’t mean you are suddenly James Bond but it was pretty clear to me they hired this actress specifically because she’s done action roles in the past and was meant to be more physical.

In fact I remember arguing with a poster about this same thing at the time she was announced to be on the show because they assumed she was just suppose to be a paper pusher and I argued how many fictional intelligence officers are paper pushers in TV shows and movies? Most gets their hands dirty.

And she just confirmed it. ;)

Okay, I went and found that article:

https://trekmovie.com/2019/03/04/star-trek-picard-series-casts-its-first-two-roles/

“Hurd is playing a former intelligence officer who is a brilliant analyst with a terrific memory that has not been affected by her drug and alcohol abuse.”

So it’s not a new idea, it’s just the writers never did anything with it (surprise, surprise) and just made it a title until now I guess.

Great digging Tiger2.

I found her intriguing in the opening episodes, and then she just became sad.

Kudos to Matalas for going back to the original series bible to reground the character.

As an aside, some of Raffi’s intelligence competence was reflected in the Una McCormack tie-in prequel novel “The Last Best Hope”.

Either way, it’s definitely a thread, as you say among many, that seemed to have been lost in the incoherence of season one and COVID rewrites of season two.

Yep, it sounds like Matalas has took all these characters and emphasized their traits a lot more, certainly for this show.

But yeah I completely forgot that was suppose to be Rafffi’s background too until this article reminded me lol. But in the early stages of season one and when we learned there was a conspiracy happening, I thought that’s why the character was being introduced and Picard went to her because she could get them into places Federation citizens or non-Starfleet officers weren’t usually allowed to go. Or at least use her to find former assets to either help find Maddox or uncover why he disappeared. I really thought Raffi was going to be a big part of uncovering the conspiracy by doing, you know, spy stuff, so I was intrigued.

And then none of that happened.

You know it shows how little the writers in S1 and S2 cared about the defined character backgrounds — that background of hers never was touched up in either season…they focused too much on her being a sad drunk.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the ultimate endgame was to have them both in it.

Once they sent Georgiou into pasts unknown, at first I just assumed she’d get a time travel spin-off. I know the assumption is they are planning a conventional show in one time with some legacy characters like Raffi and Bashir. But even though Trek is hit or miss with time travel, it’s been a staple of every series at some point, so why not finally have a show that leans into that?

Good point!

Meh maybe not Bashir since he really wanted nothing to do with Section 31.

I guess we’ll see what Lower Decks does with William Boimler but I wouldn’t say no to having Jack Quaid as part of it.

LOL I forgot the other Boimler is now in Section 31 too!

Bashier does join Section 31 in the novels but from what I know, it was to take it down. But they can change that in canon and he basically creates a more friendly S31 I guess.

Let’s make it the ultimate crossover Section 31 show: Georgiou, Boimler, Bashier and even Raffi. Might as well bring Tyler back too. I see none of this happening but I would definitely watch if it did, especially if they got Bashir back.

And then bring in Trip since he obviously faked his death too. Perfect little dream team.

I love where you guys are going with us…lol

If the show is time travel based then yeah they can absolutely bring Trip back and have be in whatever century the show takes place in! So yeah, he can be in the show too lol.

Wouldn’t that be ironic if they threw a bunch of dollars his way and he costarred with Michelle Yeoh on the section 31 series. Money talks in Hollywood.

If you meant Siddig: 🤷 it’d be a job for him I guess even if it completely ignores how Bashir felt about Section 31 but then what else is new, apparently everyone does.

If you meant Quaid: lol I hope so, better than that 💩 he’s in right now for Amazon.

Yeah, meant Siddig. Forgot to say that — thanks for pointing that out, my friend.

Good point on Quaid — I agree!

Hot Mess Raffi and Adolf joining forces for a Section 31 show?

Yeah that definitely sounds like Kurtzman Trek! 🤣🙄

If they throw in Carl/GOFl as part of the team and they time travel every episode, OK, now we got a real show! 😎

Carl is so awesome! I really want to see him back again.

More Carl the GOF avatar please!

What a brilliant innovation that was in Discovery S3.

Yes, I want more Carl too!! I was hoping he showed up i season 4.

I still love my idea of a Q/GOF show who has to work together to save the universe every week. It would be the ultimate comedy buddy show!

That makes so so much more sense than Emperor Georgiou working for S31. I could do without a S31 show but if it’s Raffi and 25th century based, it certainly has some potential…

This is a really good theory!

Given that they’re going back to the drawing board with Raffi and hopefully levelling up the characters writing to match the talents of the actress, which they failed to do previously, all going well I’m hopeful that this idea will become a reality. I’m onboard!

Thanks. Maybe this season in some way might also lead to a soft setup to a S31 series follow-on series?

Raffi started off as one of my favorite new characters at the beginning of season one, but by the end of it she was just annoying. I didn’t hate her but I wouldn’t have issues if she was gone. Then season 2 and again, she started fine and a little better but went back to her same annoying self by the third episode.

But listening to others who hated the character in the first two seasons says she’s almost a different character and is so much more interesting to watch. Matalas really used her and this time and made her more likable in the process.

And I completely forgot originally she was marketed as an intelligence officer in the first season. I think everyone literally forgot because it was never really focused on at all. But I remember when we first met her and she was going on about the Mars attack being a cover up for something bigger, I thought we were going to see as a spy then. That’s she was going to use her skills to uncover the Romulan conspiracy that they were trying to wipe out the Synths…but then none of that happened. And proceeded to do even less with it in season 2.

So it’s nice Matalas actually remembered lol and it sounds like we’re going to see what she was intended to be all along.

Well, they sorta did something with it. Remember on La Sirena when she’s piecing together the Conclave of 8 and stuff with all the Rios holos? It wasn’t a sexy spy thrilling-style affair, but her ability to pull all that stuff together I thought was made mostly pretty evident.

Yeah she did a little, but still very little. I did like scene with the Rios holos though.

I just don’t understand why anyone would want a Raffi spinoff. She’s the worst PICARD character by a mile. They jettisoned all the best characters and kept her. I can’t fathom that. A spinoff about this one-dimensionally written, overacted mess of a character? No thank you. A spinoff about Rios would have been great. Or Borg-Agnes. Or Seven and the Rangers. Or, heck, even holo-Elnor. But Raffi? No.

Note I said “Seven and the Rangers.” That’s because Seven’s belated entry into Starfleet doesn’t work as the landmark event they’re making it out to be. The idea that Seven is only now being allowed to enter Starfleet makes no sense at all. Locutus decimated the Federation, yet Picard was allowed to serve. Icheb was raised by the Borg, yet he was allowed to serve. Janeway was promoted to Admiral after being assimilated, and Torres and Tuvok continued to serve as well after they were, too. And on Prodigy, Zero is assimilated, then is soon thereafter allowed to enlist. But Seven, for some reason, is denied entrance for decades. It’s nonsensical.

While I love Seven and am glad she’s finally allowed to join Starfleet, there’s a BIG difference between her and Picard. Picard was BRIEFLY a Borg, whereas Seven has been a Borg since she was a small child and still has Borg technology in her bloodstream. Can the Borg somehow activate those remnants?

Seven still had a fairly Borglike persona even after being on Voyager for several years and had a much more pragmatic, much less conventionally moral worldview even during Season 7 of Voyager. Much as I love her, I understand why at that time , Starfleet decided she wasn’t for them.

I find Raffi an interesting character, far more interesting than sword-elf boy.

far more interesting than sword-elf boy.

LOL, yes, “Trek-Legolas” was a misfire. Great kid though — met him at a convention.

Eh, I thought Elnor worked fine in context of the “scrappy little ship and misfit crew” take of S1. But once it was decided to lean the show back toward Starfleet, I suspect there wasn’t much use for a guy who solves conflicts with decapitations, hence shoehorning him into Starfleet. Plus the character fell victim to the same appalling writing as everyone else in S2, which didn’t help. I’d be fine with seeing him in a post-PIC spinoff if we got writers who actually cared about building up the character. There are definitely stories to be told about the first full Romulan in Starfleet, especially after the reveal that Romulans were responsible for the disaster at the Mars shipyards.

But you just described Icheb–who was in Starfleet.

Perhaps we should watch her in this completely new version of Picard this season first before rushing to judgment?

I mean…. I’ve seen 20 episodes of the character, out of 30. I don’t think that qualifies as rushing to judgment. I’ve already seen 2/3 of her appearances. :)

Perhaps. I still want to see this season with her performing in an allegedly much better written role.

After everything Seven did to help Voyager, and having Admiral Janeway’s full backing, I agree it’s silly that Seven was denied entry.

But, to play Devil’s Advocate, she did have a few incidents where her rebelliousness would need to be explained, and she had a lot of Borg tech she still relied on. It’s possible she doesn’t need to regenerate anymore though, based on what we’ve seen in Picard. And as Corylea said, it’s easy to imagine that right after Endgame, Seven probably didn’t give the best interview.

Picard was not drummed out of Starfleet after Wolf 359, but obviously there was a lot of animosity he had to deal with – just look at Sisko and Admiral Satie. And then the fact that Starfleet expressly forbade him from engaging the Borg in “First Contact” because they were paranoid is a decent precedent for how they viewed Seven.

As for Icheb, we’ve seen in the Prodigy season 1 finale how Starfleet Academy isn’t quite as trusting as it could be. But the whole, “He’s just a kid” aspect probably was the deciding factor there, plus his “Imperfection” selflessness and the nature of how he was assimilated.

Sounds like it’s going to be a good season for Raffi. Fingers crossed – I like the character, and she really needs an arc that’ll shake off the stink of S2.

I like Raffi, especially after you read the tie in novels and comics that came out before / during Picard.

although preference would have been Rios to have been here as well…even to captain the titan, what a great legacy of old and new.

Rios, Raffi, and Worf out there kicking a**! That would be a hell of a time.

I don’t really get this deep and abiding Seven/Raffi relationship when we saw them half-holding hands (out of nowhere) for about one second at the end of Season One and by the beginning of Season Two they’d broken up and spent the rest of the season bickering. I mean, maybe they had some amazing and profound relationship in between the two seasons, but without us having seen it, it’s hard to sell it.

Yup it’s been pretty badly developed.

Despite what the cast and writers say in interviews, onscreen Seven and Raffi were nonexistent as a couple. I’m not sure why people seem to find them interesting together. As you say, we say a brief hand-holding, then some bickering devoid of actor chemistry. And that was it.

As a member of the LGBT community, it’s 100% because we’ve waited so long for Trek to follow up on its claims of being progressive by including us and to actually give us LGBT couples. I’m a gay man so Seven and Raffi wasn’t for me but their relationship was special to the lesbians I know.

You say it’s non-existent onscreen. I’m not really surprised. If anything Trek just remained the same there. Since this and the one in Lower Decks is ???? probably broken up. So we’re just clinging to the scraps that we’ve been thrown.

I really like Raffi. I get that these seasons of PIC are self-contained stories, and that time passes between them, but I wanted to see the journey of how Raffi pulled herself together after S1 and rejoined Starfleet. In S2 I wanted to learn more about what makes her the messy person she is, because that was a lot more satisfying for me as a viewer. I wanted to like her relationship with Seven, but we really didn’t get to see much of it. This interview and some of the others we’ve seen make me excited to see where Raffi is at. *** By the way, a bit off topic, but Una McCormack wrote a great PIC novel called “Second Self,” and Raffi is awesome in it.

Raffi was also great in McCormack’s prequel novel to S1 “The Last Best Hope.”

Raffi Trek would be Awesome

If we’re honest, Rios was the only new character/actor worth preserving from S1/S2. The rest I wouldn’t miss.

Why Raffi Musiker From Star Trek: Picard Looks So Familiar

Raffi Musiker looking sad

Raffaela "Raffi" Musiker had a complicated relationship with Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart), her commanding officer, during Paramount+'s "Star Trek: Picard."  The former lieutenant commander was called back into service by Picard after a 14-year absence from Starfleet (and a time period that she described as "one long slide into humiliation and rage"). She had originally left Starfleet after the organization rejected her plan, which she and Picard had devised to get a group of Romulans to safety and away from a developing supernova after their rescue armada was destroyed during an attack on Mars. Picard resigned in protest, leaving her alone in the wake of his choice. She suspects that other higher-ups had turned down the plan. She bitterly quits and subsequently becomes addicted to snakeleaf.

Musiker carries a grudge against Starfleet — but she still helps Picard out when he comes to her for assistance in finding Bruce Maddox (John Ales). She ends up taking part in the search for Maddox and even enlists old colleague Cristóbal Rios (Santiago Cabrera) in the mission.

The actress who played Raffi has a number of high-profile roles under her belt. Here's why her face might look familiar to you.

Michelle Hurd got her start on soaps, then recurred on Malcolm & Eddie

Michelle Hurd smiling on Malcolm & Eddie

Per her IMDb page, Michelle Hurd has been acting since 1989. Small parts and walk-on roles in TV shows like "The Cosby Mysteries" and movies like "Rude Awakening" led Hurd to her first regular role, that of Dana Kramer on the NBC soap opera "Another World." She would play Dana from 1991 to 1997, and during that period she would take on recurring roles and guest spots on other shows and in film. She also appeared in a number of commercials , including a 1996 ad for Kellogg's Crispix.

Notably, she would appear on the Dick Wolf police drama "New York Undercover" for five episodes as A.D.A. Reynolds, and took guest-starring roles on "The Practice" and "Law & Order." Hurd's next role would be on the UPN series "Malcolm & Eddie." She played Simone Lewis on the show for eight episodes, which aired from 1997 to 1998. She also had a minor role in the Harrison Ford/Kristin Scott Thomas movie "Random Hearts" in 1999.

She was Monique on Law and Order: Special Victim's Unit

Monique determined

1999 also marked the first year Hurd portrayed Detective Monique Jeffries in NBC's "Law & Order" franchise. Monique was streetwise and savvy, a nice counterpoint to her partners, Detective Brian Cassidy (Dean Winters) and Detective John Munch (Richard Belzer). Hurd would play the character for the entire first season of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." After 25 episodes, she left the show during Season 2 and began taking work on other projects. Monique appears briefly in the first episode of Season 2 of "SVU," where the audience is informed that she's been transferred to the vice squad (this after being busted down to a desk job) in the wake of her sleeping with a suspect.

Hurd has never spoken out about why she left the series , and she hasn't returned to "SVU" for any guest turns. Regardless, her career continued onward and upward. She was a regular in the single-season Showtime drama series "Leap Years," and recurred three times on the ABC sitcom "According to Jim." She popped up on the teen soap "The O.C.," the original version of "Charmed," and Fox's drama "Bones" before landing her next regular role.

ER led Hurd to Gossip Girl and the Glades

Courtney Brown Smiling

That's Michelle Hurd on NBC's storied medical drama "E.R." as Courtney Brown. Brown was a television news producer who developed a romantic relationship with Dr. Kerry Weaver (Laura Innes) during the show's 13th season. She became Weaver's final love interest, and the two left Chicago together so Brown and Weaver could pursue work at a news station in Miami together. Hurd appeared on the show six times before departing with Innes.

Hurd also recurred on The CW's "Gossip Girl," where she portrayed fashion industry figure Laurel for six episodes. Stints on CBS' "CSI: Miami," "Blue Bloods" and "The Good Wife" led to another six-episode run on a teen soap, this time The CW's "90210" reboot. There, Hurd portrayed Rachel Gray, an event planner and Holly Strickler's (Megalyn Echikunwoke) mother.

Hurd's next big role was on A&E's crime drama "The Glades," where she was a regular for all four seasons. Hurd played Colleen Manus, the regional director for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and one smart and tough cookie who must keep her charges in line. She hired Jim Longworth (Matt Passmore) a loose-cannon cop from Chicago and the show's protagonist, who left his previous post in disgrace. The show was canceled in 2013 (via the Hollywood Reporter ).

She was a thorn in Daredevil's (and the Punisher's) side

Reyes scared

After guest roles on Fox's "Raising Hope" and Freeform's "Pretty Little Liars," Michelle Hurd appeared on four episodes of Lifetime's telenovela "Devious Maids" before snagging two entirely unique supporting roles.

That's Hurd as tough-as-nails DA Samantha Reyes on Netflix's "Daredevil." Hurd appeared six times on the show and also crossed over to Netflix's "Jessica Jones" as Reyes. Samantha prosecuted Frank Castle's (Jon Bernthal) murder case and found herself battling in court opposite Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) to send Castle off to prison. Though on the surface she may seem to care about law and order, her ultimate goal is to put away Frank before he can tell the world that she had a hand in a massacre that killed his entire family — though her intent was to kill Ray Schoonover, aka The Blacksmith (Clancy Brown). Ultimately, Castle is found guilty, but her victory is hollow — someone knows that she's an accomplice, and has begun threatening her family. Schoonover subsequently has her shot to death after she confesses her complicity in the case to Foggy and Matt.

She was Ash's sweetheart on Ash vs Evil Dead

Linda Smiling

Next up for Hurd was the second season of "Ash vs Evil Dead."  She portrayed Ash Williams' (Bruce Campbell)'s high school girlfriend, Linda Bates-Emery. When Ash returns to his hometown of Elk Grove, Michigan, he learns that Linda never left the place and has set up shop there. Though Ash and Linda still have some chemistry going on, it turns out that Linda has married another member of their graduating class (and a victim of Ash's bullying), Sheriff Thomas Emery (Stephen Lovatt). Thomas and Linda have a teenage daughter, Lacey (Pepi Sonuga).

Ash's return brings nothing but havoc into the family's lives, ultimately resulting in Lacey and Thomas' death and possession. And yet, Linda stays by Ash's side, ultimately becoming a part of the team holding the rest of the world at bay and keeping an angry mob from imprisoning Ash for his multiple crimes. Though Linda survives the massacre and appears to get back together with Ash at the end of the season, Linda is nowhere to be seen during Season 3. No one mentions her name or discusses what happened to her, and Ash proceeds to pursue other women.

Hurd, meanwhile, popped up in Fox's version of "Lethal Weapon," and as Renee Grover for eight episodes of CBS' "Hawaii Five-O" reboot. Her next role would make her even more of an action legend.

She made a home for herself on Blindspot

Shepherd determined

Aside from "Picard" and her role as Maxine Bludso in the horror film "Bad Hair," Michelle Hurd's latest and most notable role has been that of the villainous Major General Ellen Briggs, aka Shepherd, on the NBC drama "Blindspot."  Hurd appears in 27 episodes of the program over the course of several seasons.

Shepherd is an army veteran who's an old associate of Kurt Weller's (Sullivan Stapleton). Her ultimate goal is to bring evil down, and her belief in the aims of the terrorist organization Sandstorm is complete. It doesn't matter who dies and when, as long as the organization has mopped up corruption. If that means deploying chemical weapons in a crowded area, so be it.

Understandably, Briggs must be brought to justice, and it's up to Weller to play a convincing enough double agent so his colleagues can disrupt Sandstorm's plan to blow up several federal buildings with a rocket. It's up to Weller and his colleagues, such as William Patterson (Ashley Johnson) and the show's main protagonist, the amnesiac Jane (Jaimie Alexander), to keep this from happening. Ultimately, her plan is put down, and Shepherd is killed by Jane.

Hurd, meanwhile, continues to build quite an interesting and diverse career, which continues to this day.

Seven Of Nine & Raffi’s Status Is “Complicated”, Says Star Trek: Picard's Michelle Hurd

Star trek: picard's borg queen is still confusing over 1 year after season 3, star trek: picard totally forgot about jean-luc's other son.

  • Raffi and Seven's relationship gets complicated in Star Trek: Picard season 3, with Seven becoming Captain of the USS Enterprise-G.
  • Michelle Hurd hopes to see more representation of addiction struggles and LGBTQ+ issues in the Star Trek universe through Raffi and Seven.
  • The potential spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy, may explore more romances, including Jack Crusher and Ensign Sidney La Forge, alongside Raffi and Seven.

Star Trek: Picard star Michelle Hurd has some ideas about how the story of Commander Raffi Musiker and Jeri Ryan's Captain Seven of Nine should continue. Raffi and Seven both joined the cast of Picard in season 1, and the two began exploring a romantic relationship at the end of the season. In Picard season 2, Raffi and Seven traveled back in time with Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) to Los Angeles in 2024. While working to find a way back home, Raffi and Seven discussed their relationship, which had grown somewhat strained.

In Star Trek: Picard season 3, Raffi and Seven work in different areas of Starfleet, with Raffi in Starfleet Intelligence and Seven stationed on the USS Titan. By the end of Star Trek: Picard season 3 , Seven has been promoted to Captain of the newly rechristened USS Enterprise-G with Raffi as her First Officer. Michelle Hurd sat down for an interview with IGN , where she discussed her hopes for Raffi and Seven's future. Read her quotes below:

I really want to see how Seven, Raffi, and Jack Crusher navigate the universe, but I also think that it's important to continue to tell the journey of people who are or who have been addicts. Because once we have it, we're there forever. What’s a better way to put that pressure on her than to be Number One and know that she has a responsibility not only to her captain and somebody who she cares very deeply for, but to Starfleet as well?
I think we could also continue to push and explore what it’s like having Seven of Nine as the first queer Star Trek captain without it being the focus. It should just be life and see how we navigate in it. Just like me talking about being dyslexic. I'd love for us to be able to reveal more of the things that people who look like they are presenting as ‘neurotypical normal’ are actually struggling with and going through. I think it would be phenomenal because you'll get an audience that is finally seeing themselves represented.

Michelle Hurd hints that Commander Raffi Musiker and Captain Seven of NIne may not always be on the same page at Star Trek Picard season 3's end.

Seven & Raffi's Star Trek Story Depends On Picard's Star Trek Spinoff

Despite fan excitement and the perfect setup, star trek: legacy remains unconfirmed..

Picard season 3 ended without wrapping up the story of Raffi and Seven's relationship, leaving the status of their romance unknown.

Although the potential Star Trek: Picard spin-off, Star Trek: Legacy, has long been rumored, it remains to be seen whether Raffi and Seven's story will continue. Picard season 3 ended without wrapping up the story of Raffi and Seven's relationship, leaving the status of their romance unknown. Not only will Raffi and Seven be spending more time together now that they are both on the bridge of the Enterprise-G, but Seven also outranks Raffi, which could lead to further complications. With Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), the son of Jean-Luc Picard and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), as a "Special Counselor to the Captain," things are likely to be far from boring on the newest Enterprise.

As revealed in Star Trek: Picard season 3's post-credits scene, Jack Crusher has also piqued the interest of his father's old foe, Q (John de Lancie), who can never resist the chance to mess with a member of the Picard family.

If Star Trek: Legacy does get the green light, Raffi and Seven's relationship may not be the only romance explored on the show. In Picard season 3, Jack Crusher and Ensign Sidney La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut), daughter of Commodore Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), developed a friendship filled with flirtatious banter. While their relationship never developed further, there were definitely hints it could turn into something more. Hopefully, we will get to see more of Jack and Sidney, as well as Seven and Raffi, as their journeys in Star Trek: Picard felt like they were just getting started.

Star Trek: Picard “The Next Generation” – Review

avatar

These are the voyages of the Starship Titan-A. Written by Terry Matalas, season 3 of Picard is helmed by the new showrunner to close out the chapter of Picard (the show) and Picard (the bald bloke). Directed by Doug Aarniokoski, Aarniokoski returns from last season’s openers and season 1’s “Nepenthe.” Christopher B Derrick is also promoted to story editor alongside Kiley 279 namesake, Kiley Rossetter. I honestly feel a sigh of relief to be covering this season instead of the mess that we have had to suffer for the last 20 episodes.

On the dark side of the Alpha Quadrant, a random ship is listening to the Fallout music and Picard’s briefings with LCARS makes their return once again. It is a normal thing to happen, just like when Bev is out here executing masked figures on a small cargo ship with more brutality and training than the spec ops guys from “ Hide and Seek .” Dealing with them with more precision than a trained killer, Bev ends up locking up a bloke with an English accent and sending a coded message to JL to help her. Aside from TNG ’s doc executing with prejudice, it’s very demure, very Star Trek , very TNG already.

In the shadow of the Enterprise D painting in his study, Picard is talking with his new lover about his ex and possibly saving her . Saving her, under her request, without Starfleet’s help. Eventually meeting with Bill while we get great shots of old Eagle Moss ships (they are pretty ships, expensive though) the two hatch a plan to put themselves in danger as they always do. While Raffi is strung out, role-playing as a Cyberpunk 2077 character trying to uncover a mystery in a scene from Blade Runner .

There is no way around it, I’ve said it time and time again, and I’ve made it clear in my opening. This third season of Picard is a lot more exciting, not because this opening is better than the other two. Picard (the show) has a problem with seasons one and two having good to great openings which fall off almost immediately. Mostly to service nostalgia over storytelling as soon as the set-up is done, it makes retroactively going back to seasons 1 and 2 openers taste bitter. Retroactively returning to “The Next Generation” there is already a quality jump in the writing and more importantly, the performances.

star trek wiki raffi

I said it last week, but I’ll make it clear again before I move on. That painting shouldn’t have been of the D, Picard’s true love is the Stargazer. If there is one bit of “Ok, please understand the character” that’s it, that is the ship Picard loves because it was his first. He had the painting sure, and it was in his ready room when it went down in the last film, but there is no way he went back to pick it up. The painting was there but so was the model of the NCC-7100, which is preserved in the quantum archives back in “Remembrance.”

So “The Next Generation” itself then? The best first episode which feels like it understood the characters a lot more, understood the character voice, played off of several different special skills, and introduced us to one of my favorite people to have encountered Admiral Jean-Luc Picard. That said, I feel I need to point something out straight away. Raffi is still here, Annika is still here, and Laris is here for a few minutes. The rest of them? In the bin with most of the ideas of seasons 1 and 2 almost entirely.

star trek wiki raffi

I don’t want to keep repeating myself, but it feels like a totally different show. Not just because Terry Matalas has come in as the showrunner, but the cast feels more comfortable at least. Seasons 1 and 2 (I’ll try and move on) felt like a show that was being made for nostalgia and because an aging actor agreed to do one last hurrah, an actor who initially had a lot of heart for it but didn’t feel the script. “The Next Generation” already makes Patrick sound and feel more like the captain we once knew, albeit looking like a pickled testicle.

Season 1 I said it, and I’ll say it again , I love you Patrick but you had no business in some of those action-focused scenes in the last 2 seasons. There is action here, especially towards the end, but it is dealt with in a very Jean-Luc Picard way. So “The Next Generation” opens with Beverly Crusher being Lara Croft in space, indiscriminately killing with malice and ends with being hurt in the fight in the process. Meanwhile, after calling her ex up on space WhatsApp, she is placed into a medical stasis tube by a bloke with an English accent. So you know what that means, he’s French.

star trek wiki raffi

The cliffhanger, if you can even call it that, is both Jack Crusher saying he’s a Crusher and the ruddy big ship in the nebula that looks cool as hell. Did I say cool ? I mean to say evil as hell! I don’t want this to sound like “Oh, you’re excited because you know where this is going.” Sure, I do, but I’m more excited because the writing has given me a reason to care, even for the short-lived mystery.

It is difficult to say that Jack Crusher is another mystery box when he’s about as sign-posted as the directions to the guillotine in late 18th century France. Nor is the “mystery” of who Raffi’s handler is after she’s called a certain thing. Hell, if you’re paying attention the ship might not even be a mystery but a massive tease that is gently fondling you in all the right places. None of it, aside from Jack but there are reasons for that, are the “hey, remember this non-consequential thing no one ever cared about? We’re doing that!”

star trek wiki raffi

Everything teased, everything thrown at us in the opening is bits of the story connected to the central story of Jean-Luc Picard, and expands the universe. Not in the Chris Chibnall “let’s add to the Wiki” sense, but the fun adventure sense that is (again) central to the character. It has been so long since I’ve been excited about Picard , and the last time I probably was, it was from a teaser featuring John de Lancie.

I know I’m about to dumb it down, but I don’t want to discredit Matalas and the team. This is a really simple concept that should have been done from the start: Someone from Picard’s past is in distress, he calls up one of his nearest and dearest friends, they take a ship from a Captain Jellico-type played by Todd Stashwick, and he goes apoplectic. The old man sees there is more to this than he thought, Jellico is going to be dragged into this, oh and they are only days away from Frontier Day where old fuddy-duddies are supposed to be making speeches and ships are to be paraded.

star trek wiki raffi

On paper, it isn’t a hard concept to get down. Though the series tried hard to make new fans care about an older character. Now it is a series that does appease the fans, and not just through throwing references at the ceiling like wet paper towels in the upstairs boy’s toilets in year 7. I didn’t do it, I just saw the mess afterward. The point is, and I feel I’ve repeated my points a lot, season 3 of Picard is bringing quality over quantity in terms of references, and there are a good few references.

Overall, “The Next Generation” understands The Next Generation and the Enterprise-D’s crew a lot more than the previous captains of production. Even as the season opener, there is a breath of fresh air (which is odd for space) that makes even Picard season 3’s hints of mystery and drama much more appetizing than prior seasons. If all I’m ding-ing you for is that Picard’s first love wasn’t the Enterprise D over the Stargazer, then yeah, you’ve hit it out of the park. Though I could do with a touch less Blade Runner and a bit more DS9 in the dystopian underworld tones.
