Midtown Manhattan is an urban icon. The history of zoning laws that have been shaping it for a century command respect and attention. The City’s rules of vertical growth have created more than just a display of wealth or a new architectural style. They materialize Manhattan’s power and life energy, and make it the substance of the City’s monumental scale. Building a tower in Midtown Manhattan starts with a dialogue between decision makers. Ultimately, this dialogue will have to answer two questions of substance. What ideas is this tower made of and what is its place in the City? With his design for the Tower Verre, Jean Nouvel proposes to take the strict respect of the zoning envelope to the point where its shape becomes the tower itself. Governed by its legal envelope and the structural framing needed to withstand the wind loads, this building is as unique and singular as the parcel it stands on. From close up, its receding stealth geometry makes it surprisingly discrete and unobtrusive for its height. Seen from Central Park, the bridges and most locations on the river banks, its triangular silhouette stands out and is very recognizable in the Manhattan skyline, inscribing the MoMA unmistakably as one of New York’s most famous and successful cultural institutions.

The façades of the tower are a structural glazing in standard glass dimensions and the bracing structure follows the simplest and most economical geometry. Living inside this building feels like inhabiting a powerfully present and reassuring structure, similar to that of a large tree. The tower draws its shape from the desire for more daylight in the streets. The narrow triangular top section is putting its unusually thin silhouette to good purposes. This tower is a monument to the rules of shadow and light, and to the forces of the wind.

New York : Une nouvelle attraction époustouflante à 300 m au-dessus du sol

Une nouvelle attraction a ouvert ce jeudi au public dans la nouvelle tour One Vanderbilt, au cœur de Manhattan . Quelques chanceux ont pu tester « Air », une installation constituée de plaques de verre et de miroirs à 300 m au-dessus du vide dans le quatrième plus haut gratte-ciel de New York.

L’attraction immersive a été réalisée par l’artiste Kenzo Digital. Un ascenseur fait monter les touristes en quarante-deux secondes pour ensuite leur offrir une vue époustouflante de l’île new-yorkaise encadrée par l’East River et l’Hudson. Là, les visiteurs se promènent sur trois étages dans une sorte d’observatoire géant tout en verre, « Summit One Vanderbilt », offrant un spectacle extraordinaire.

« Penser la relation » avec la ville

L’expérience « modifie la perception de l’espace et plonge le visiteur dans un halo de silhouettes et de gratte-ciel », a expliqué Kenzo Digital à propos de son œuvre. Pour l’un des visiteurs triés sur le volet pour visiter l’attraction avant son ouverture ce jeudi, l’expérience permet de « penser la relation que chacun noue avec la ville ».

Située à l’angle de la fameuse 42e rue et de l’avenue Vanderbilt, la tour éponyme a été conçue par le cabinet Kohn Pedersen Fox. Construite entre 2016 et 2019, elle a ouvert en septembre 2020. Elle fait 397 m (427 m avec sa flèche) et est donc la quatrième plus haute tour de New York derrière la One World Trade Center, sur le site des attentats du 11-Septembre, les tours résidentielles de l’ensemble Central Park Tower et le gratte-ciel 111 sur la 57e rue.

The Edge fait partie des derniers observatoires à avoir ouvert à New York , s’ajoutant ainsi à l’Empire State Building, le Top of the Rock, le One World Observatory et The Summit.

Qu’est ce que The Edge ?

The Edge est le nom de la plateforme d’observation située en haut de la tour 30 Hudson Yards. Ce sky deck se trouve dans le quartier d’ Hudson Yards . Sa situation géographique est selon nous un véritable point fort : le quartier d’Hudson Yards est en effet situé au bord de l’Hudson River, ce qui offre une vue inédite sur Manhattan ! The Edge a ouvert en 2020 et est le 4è observatoire que compte la ville de New York.

The Edge propose une vue 360° de New York à 335 mètres de hauteur ! Contemplez les buildings iconiques de Midtown avec notamment l’Empire State Building . La position de le plateforme The Edge vous permet d’avoir une vue panoramique sur Manhattan , et même de voir Brooklyn, le quartier financier avec la One et la Statue de la Liberté au loin !

The Edge c’est également un bar restaurant, une patinoire et la possibilité d’escalader un building en plein New York. Rien que ça ! Voici un tour d’horizon d’une visite à The Edge.

The Edge : l’observatoire extérieur

La plateforme extérieure située au 100 ème étage constitue l’observatoire principal de The Edge. Vous pouvez vous avancer dehors et observer la ville derrière des vitres en verre inclinées. Elles vous donneront l’impression de vous pencher dans le vide !

Bons plans photo à The Edge Vous pouvez vous prendre en photo à la pointe de la plateforme, près du sol en verre, mais il y a beaucoup de monde ! Donc de l’attente et un champ de vision pas top… Ce que nous vous conseillons c’est de vous rendre à l’une des 2 pointes sur les côtés de la plateforme extérieure. Une personne se positionne au bout de la pointe et le photographe rentre à l’intérieur du building pour prendre la photo. Cela donne une jolie perspective originale (la photo avec Anne juste au-dessus a été prise sur la pointe droite de The Edge) ! Il y a également un escalier qui vous élève encore de quelques mètres et vous permet d’avoir une belle vue au-dessus des vitrines inclinées. Vous pourrez y prendre de très belles photos sans vous soucier des reflets dans les vitres !

The Edge : la tour avec un sol en verre

C’est une des raisons du succès de The Edge : une partie de la plateforme extérieure a un sol en verre ! Oserez-vous marcher dessus ? Dans tous les cas, vous pouvez y aller en toute sécurité (c’est solide et étudié pour). Vous verrez sous vos pieds un vide de plus de 300 mètres … Petite hésitation au moment où on pose le premier pied, mais c’est vraiment une expérience à faire !

City Climb : escalade au sommet de The Edge

City Climb est une des attractions les plus vertigineuses de New York . Alors amateurs de sensations fortes , cette activité est faite pour vous !

City Climb, c’est la plus haute ascension d’un building en plein air au monde ! Il s’agit d’un escalier situé sur la façade de The Edge qui permet de monter jusqu’à son sommet, soit à 387 mètres de haut.

Les règles de sécurité sont importantes et respectées :

• Vous partez avec un guide d’escalade qui vous équipe et vous explique comment vous attacher tout le long de l’ascension
• Au sommet, vous arriverez sur une petite plateforme. C’est ici que vous pouvez vous pencher en arrière et vous suspendre dans le vide !

Cette activité n’est évidemment pas conseillée aux personnes ayant le vertige. Mais pour les plus courageux : c’est une expérience INCROYABLE !

Sky Skate, la patinoire la plus haute de New York

Cette activité est la toute dernière nouveauté de The Edge ! Ouverte depuis le 10 janvier 2023, une patinoire intérieure a été installée sur la plateforme de l’observatoire. Il est alors possible de patiner à plus de 300 mètres de hauteur avec une vue sur la skyline de New York : une activité insolite à faire à New York !

C’est une patinoire en glace synthétique : il n’y a aucune différence lorsque l’on patine mais simplement elle n’utilise pas d’électricité.

Pour y accéder, vous devez acheter des billets spécifiques à 48$ (43$ pour les 6-12 ans) qui comprennent : l’accès à la plateforme d’observation The Edge, une session de 30 minutes de patin à glace et la location des patins (vous n’avez d’ailleurs pas le droit d’emmener vos propres patins pour ne pas abîmer la glace).

Comme les autres patinoires de New York , c’est une activité éphémère qui ferme généralement au mois de mars.

Le restaurant Peak

Au 101 ème étage, vous trouverez le restaurant « Peak » . C’est un restaurant haut de gamme, dans un thème « bar-salon ». Vous pouvez observer la magnifique vue sur toute la ville tout en mangeant. Cela reste un restaurant assez petit (uniquement 14 tables assises) et qui est très fréquenté, surtout pour des repas d’entreprises. Il est alors très difficile d’y réserver une table ! Cependant, vous n’aurez aucune difficulté à trouver où manger dans le quartier Hudson Yards qui est connu pour ses nombreux restaurants à la fois haut de gamme mais aussi typiquement new yorkais.

La force de The Edge est vraiment sa vue. Vous verrez tous les points les plus emblématiques de la skyline de New York très facilement. Personnellement, nous avons pu faire la visite au coucher de soleil et cela a vraiment rendu l’expérience encore plus belle. En effet, nous avons pu voir la ville sans 3 angles : en journée, durant le coucher de soleil et de nuit . Bien évidemment, il y a plus de monde lors du coucher de soleil c’est pour ça que nous vous conseillons d’y aller une heure avant pour en profiter plus tranquillement. Si vous voulez visiter un observatoire purement pour la vue, c’est un très bon choix à faire.

Quels sont les horaires d’ouverture de the edge .

The Edge ouvre ses portes de 10:00 à 22:00 du lundi au jeudi et de 10:00 à 23:00 du vendredi au dimanche.

Si vous souhaitez observer le coucher de soleil durant votre visite, essayez de réserver votre créneau pour une heure avant . Vous pouvez retrouver l’heure où le soleil se couche sur leur site internet , mis à jour quotidiennement. Gardez bien en tête que le coucher de soleil est un des moments où il y aura le plus de monde !

Combien de temps dure la visite ?

Il n’y a pas de temps limité pour votre visite. Comptez généralement 45 minutes – 1 heure lorsque vous êtes en haut. Mais si vous voulez y passer plus de temps, faites vous plaisir !

En achetant votre billet, vous devez choisir un créneau horaire pour votre visite, cela permet de réguler le nombre de personnes à l’observatoire. Il n’y a pas vraiment de meilleur moment pour y aller, bien que ce sera généralement plus calme en y allant très tôt le matin.

The Vessel est une structure assez récente également présente dans le quartier Hudson Yards. C’est difficile de vraiment définir ce que c’est : c’est une œuvre d’art à elle seule. Elle mesure 45 mètres de hauteur et se constitue de 154 escaliers connectés.

La Highline

La High Line est un parc suspendu de plus de 2 kilomètres allant du Hudson Yards au Meatpacking District. Vous pouvez y faire une magnifique balade, vous reposer, pique-niquer… Il y a vraiment de très belles vues de New York tout le long. C’est vraiment un incontournable de New York qui en plus, est entièrement gratuit ! Vous pouvez retrouver toutes les informations sur la Highline dans notre article dédié.

Hudson River Park

De nouveau un très bel endroit pour se balader : le Hudson River Park . Le parc où vous pouvez vous poser dans l’herbe se trouve entre le Pier 62 et 64. Cependant, vous pouvez continuer le long de la Hudson River et descendre jusqu’au Pier 25, non loin du Lower Manhattan. C’est vraiment un très bel endroit pour regarder le coucher de soleil ou pour vous balader. De plus, c’est un circuit un peu épargné de touristes : de quoi vous ressourcer avant de retourner dans la ville qui ne dort jamais !

La tour mesure 345 mètres de haut. L’observatoire se trouve à 335 mètres.

Comme pour la plupart des observatoires, le meilleur moment c’est forcément le coucher de soleil. Les couleurs du ciel au-dessus de Midtown sont juste magnifiques.

Bonjour à tous, j’ai réservé 4 billets en famille mais The Edge était fermé pour cause de mauvais temps. J’ai donc reporté au lendemain mais de nouveau fermé pour cause de mauvais temps. Ma dernière possibilité, avant mon départ, était le jour d’après, d’autant que la météo s’améliorait, mais là encore The Edge fermé toute la journée pour événement privatisé. J’ai finalement demandé un remboursement; réponse : The Edge ne pratique aucun remboursement, seulement des reports de dates. Résultats j’ai perdu 150€.

Bonjour Alexina, je vous conseille fortement de réserver à l’avance votre visite à The Edge. Cet observatoire fait parti des incontournables de New York et donc attire beaucoup de visiteurs. En réservant à l’avance, vous pourrez choisir le jour et l’heure souhaitée, cela vous évitera de patienter dans la file d’attente.

Pour notre futur séjour à NY en Juin, J’ai pris un Pass Explorer Go City pour monter à The Edge. J’ai vu que nous avons un accès antcipé pour une ouverture à 8 h. Est-ce que je dois passer la veille pour bloquer un créneau horaire sur une borne à l’entrée oubien me présenter le Jour J avec mon pass sans autres démarches ? Merci par avance pour votre réponse,

Bonjour Daniel, vous pouvez réserver votre créneau la veille. Il vous suffit de présenter votre pass à l’un des kiosques situés devant l’entrée de The Edge pour réserver un créneau horaire. À l’heure réservée, il vous suffit de scanner votre pass sur le tourniquet, puis de franchir le contrôle de sécurité.

Bonjour Christine, ces billets vous donnent accès à The Edge (ascenseur, terrasse extérieure). Il n’y a aucune différence avec d’autres tickets.

Bonjour Eric, alors franchement, je ne sais pas… Il est indiqué sur le site officiel que The Edge est ouvert tous les jours de 10h à 21h donc je trouve bizarre que l’on puisse réserver pour 22h.

Le SUMMIT One Vanderbilt est plus qu’un simple observatoire. Ce gratte-ciel vous offre une expérience inédite qui mêle art, technologie, architecture et frisson. Air by Kenzo Digital : L’expérience incontournable

L’attraction phare du SUMMIT est l’exposition « Air », qui se déroule à l’intérieur du building. Vous parcourrez plusieurs salles réparties sur différents étages. Chaque pièce vous plongera dans un univers onirique et sensoriel inoubliable.

Au 91ème étage, vous découvrirez la première salle nommée « Transcendance 1 », où vous entrerez dans un espace entièrement vitré . Les jeux de miroirs et de lumières vous donneront l’impression de flotter dans les airs. À cet étage, vous pourrez aussi méditer et vous reposer dans la salle « Reflect » créée par l’artiste Yayoi Kusama . Vous terminerez ensuite votre expérience dans la salle « Affinity », une pièce très photogénique remplie de ballons argentés en hélium .

Il n’y a pas vraiment de meilleur moment pour visiter le SUMMIT. Cela dépend surtout de vos préférences et de ce que vous voulez voir. Le matin, par exemple, le soleil éclaire plus facilement le sud de l’île . Vous aurez donc un meilleur point de vue sur l’Empire State Building, le One World Trade Center et le pont de Brooklyn.

L’après-midi, le sud sera légèrement à contre-jour tandis que le nord de Manhattan sera bien mieux éclairé par le soleil. Vous aurez donc une plus belle vue sur le Chrysler Building ou encore Central Park et les quartiers aux alentours.

Enfin, si vous vous rendez au coucher du soleil ou même la nuit , vous aurez une vue imprenable sur les lumières de la ville . Les derniers rayons du soleil s’inviteront également dans les différentes salles de l’observatoire. Jean Nouvel's Tower Verre Finally Ready to Break Ground

Jean Nouvel 's long-awaited 53 West 53rd Street , also known as the Tower Verre or the MoMA Tower, may finally be ready to move ahead with construction after the project's developer Hines purchased $85.3 million worth of air rights from its neighbors MoMA and the St Thomas Episcopal Church and arranged the $860 million construction loan required for the project.

Originally proposed in 2007, the design has been plagued by problems, including significant delays due to the financial crisis and a difficult approval process which resulted in the building's height being slashed from 1,250 feet to its current planned height of 1,050 feet. However, according to a statement from Hines groundbreaking on the project is now "imminent."

"More than a decade of planning has gone into setting the stage for this architectural masterpiece," said Hines Senior Managing Director Tommy Craig in a statement. "The building’s singular elegance will be valued by future residents and treasured by New Yorkers and visitors as a new international design landmark."

When complete, the 82-story tower will hold 140 luxury apartments and 29 service apartments, as well as 39,000 square feet of gallery space which will be leased to MoMA , joining with the planned redevelopment of the American Folk Art Museum to complete MoMA's expansion.

jean nouvel ‘s residential new york development ‘tower verre’ was first revealed back in 2007, standing at a height comparable to that of the unrivalled empire state building. at the time, along with financing issues, there was much concern that the glass tower would pierce through the skyline, and cast a looming shadow over central park, its midtown placement also resulting in traffic problems. originally conceived to stand at 1,250 feet high, in 2009 the city planning commission requested that the french architect modify the design, reducing its size by 200 feet so that its final height would see it stand at 1,050 feet instead, however still existing as one of manhattan’s tallest structures — three feet higher than the chrysler building.

located at 53W 53rd street, the 78-storey building is set to feature a five-star hotel with 100 rooms, with 480,000-square feet dedicated to residential units, as well as including a three floor, 52,000-square foot expansion for MoMA, along with a restaurant located within the lobby. the exterior is envisioned to be a faceted glass wall which extends upwards into three distinct peaks, varying in height and shape at its apex. due to continuous opposition towards the realization of the ‘tower verre’, the commencement of its construction is still pending. in 2011 the project’s developer hines submitted a new set of plans and new renderings of the multipurpose complex’s interior and ground floor have recently been revealed, which indicate that its realization is still being considered.

Just off Sixth Avenue, squeezed in next to the Museum of Modern Art , is a sliver of fallow ground just big enough to accommodate a convenience store or a few brownstones—or, come to think of it, a tower as tall as the Empire State Building . Skyscrapers have gotten skinnier, and three years ago, the architect Jean Nouvel designed an exhilarating mirage for this site, a slender, 1,250-foot ballerina of a building, corseted in steel beams and perpetually en pointe. The project—Tower Verre, he calls it—seemed like too flamboyant a fantasy for a cautious metropolis, and indeed the City Council approved only a stunted version, which demands a new design.

“We have to restudy it, without starting from zero,” Nouvel says. “I don’t think we have to revisit the essentials of the structure.” It may still be a twisting, sloping needle, enfolding new MoMA galleries in its base and rising to apartments with great glass walls slashed by tilting columns. Only now it can reach no higher than 1,050 feet, a toddler’s height taller than the Chrysler Building and 200 feet shorter than the Empire State. About this, Nouvel is by turns philosophical and resentful. “The past is the past,” he says with a shrug. A few minutes later comes the zinger: “What is surprising is that Manhattan should be afraid of verticality.”

Nouvel the person does not have the precise flash and lean grace of his architecture. He is a large, slow-moving man with a melancholy mien, who always seems to be in need of a nap. Conversing in English prods him into alertness, but in French, he relaxes gratefully, letting his mini-lectures trail off in baritonal mumbles. When I meet him at 100 Eleventh Avenue, the spangled new condominium he’s designed, his black-leather-on-black outfit camouflages him against the polished inky granite of the lobby, so that his great bald dome seems to hover in midair. In the white apartments he looms like a shuffling shadow. Like one of his buildings, he manages to appear conspicuous yet at home.

“I am someone who tries to be a contextual architect,” he says. “I’m always trying to figure out how to reveal the beauty of the surroundings.” That’s a provocative statement, given that he gift-wrapped Copenhagen’s new concert hall in brilliant blue fabric, made Minneapolis’s Guthrie Theater levitate over the Mississippi waterfront, and transformed the low Barcelona skyline with a giant, glowing, tessellated phallus. Yet, glitzy as Barcelona’s Agbar Tower is, it does belong in the brightly hued, ostentatiously sexualized Spain of Pedro Almodóvar, and it does harmonize with the city’s extravagant landmarks: the colored fountains atop Montjuïc, and the corncob towers of Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Família. Nouvel has a talent for finding contexts to embrace his idiosyncrasies, and then making the results seem inevitable. “All my work is a search for what I call the missing piece of the puzzle,” he says, deftly implying that Barcelona wasn’t complete until it received his multicolored lingam, and that midtown craves his Tower Verre.

The 53rd Street skyscraper will adapt to its new height, but Nouvel insists that it must stick to the original brief: “to complete this cultural neighborhood and to complete MoMA—with a hotel and residences, yes, but it’s mostly a cultural object. It has to keep the same ambition.” Some observers have wondered whether the design’s decapitation, combined with the financing drought of the past two years, would force the development company, Hines, to scrap the whole idea. But Robert Knakal, a commercial-real-estate investment-sales broker, suggests that the warming market makes it fairly likely to be built. (A Hines spokesperson will say only that “we continue to work on the project.”)

In Nouvel’s view, Tower Verre is not just another commercial high-rise but an emblem of its moment, a testament to the city’s self-renewing vitality, and a crown on its mutable skyline. “We’re in midtown,” he says. “A place where we have to make a real skyscraper. It emerges from the skyline and you say: Okay! That’s where MoMA is! It testifies to what the skyscraper is at the beginning of this century. It’s not a copy of what the twentieth century did. It brings new forms of expression. The corsetlike structure on the perimeter of the building, the way it follows setback rules with a dynamic form of ascent that’s not the habitual stepwise manner, a structure that erases the distinction between outdoors and in—these things tie this building to the culture of these last few years.”

Nouvel made his New York debut nearly a decade ago, breaching Soho with uncharacteristic modesty. With its industrial gray steel and splashes of red and blue glass, the condominium at 40 Mercer Street inflected the neighborhood’s industrial past with Sex and the City glamour. Then came 100 Eleventh, a boom-time straggler that puts to shame the past decade’s crop of generic tinseled boxes. If in Soho, Nouvel had to grapple with a powerful urban personality, in West Chelsea he can help shape an area that still hasn’t quite jelled. A wall of slightly tinted windows, angled like mosaic tiles, sweeps around Manhattan’s cocked hip. From the outside, the variously coated and tilted panes deconstruct the sunset, give the curving façade a glittering, disco-ball effect. Crescent-shaped rooms get wraparound views, segmented like a jigsaw puzzle by irregularly sized windows that fit together, with no solid wall in between. It’s as if the builders had removed the masonry, chunk by chunk, until there was nothing left but glass. A fragmented, distorted reflection of the façade enlivens the curving white glass surfaces of Frank Gehry’s IAC headquarters across the street, turning that end of the block into a friendly fun-house game between architectural superstars. “It’s an interference—an intentional interference—that makes me happy,” Nouvel says. “And it makes Frank happy, too, from what he’s told me.”

But 100 Eleventh Avenue is Janus-faced, simultaneously opening westward to the evening sun (and pummeling rains) and turning a stern black profile eastward toward the city. A scattering of punched windows breaks up that wall’s solidity. The arrangement looks irregular and uneven, and the reason for the randomness becomes apparent only from inside. Each opening composes a specific urban view, like a framed photo: the

If Nouvel was hoping that 40 Mercer and 100 Eleventh would prepare the way for 53 West 53rd Street, he was wrong. From the moment it was first proposed, the skyscraper tapped a gusher of outrage. Neighbors felt besieged by the coalition of a globe-trotting architect, the Houston-based developer, and an expansionist MoMA, which sold the lot to Hines partly in exchange for space in the new building. Although it’s only tangentially the museum’s project, people tend to think of it as the “MoMA tower,” and the website no2moma.com includes an animation tracking its shadow across Central Park. The group behind that site, the Coalition for Responsible Midtown Development, has teamed with the local block association in a suit to annul the city’s approval.

Much of this furor is rooted in the desire to avoid noise and disruption on a street where MoMA only recently spent years under construction. Some of it probably also represents the primal horror of enormousness that persists even in midtown Manhattan, a revulsion expressed as a law of human nature by the title character of W. G. Sebald’s 2001 novel Austerlitz: “No one in his right mind could truthfully say that he liked a vast edifice … At the most we gaze at it in wonder, a kind of wonder which in itself is a form of dawning horror, for somehow we know by instinct that outsize buildings cast the shadow of their own destruction before them, and are designed from the first with an eye to their later existence as ruins.” But if you’re standing on the sidewalk looking up, it hardly matters how high the spires reach; an ant doesn’t distinguish between a five-foot human and one who’s six-foot-four.

The most reasoned and nuanced opponent is Ada Louise Huxtable, the city’s senior architecture critic, who at 89 still contributes reviews to The Wall Street Journal . Huxtable worries about “zoning creep”—the gradual dilution of the rules that confine high-rises to the avenues and keep the side streets low. “It is the wrong building in the wrong place,” she writes in an e-mail message. “I have watched the town houses and brownstones on 53rd Street go down like dominoes over the years—it was one of the loveliest streets in the city—but the fact that they are gone does not make this building right. What I see is an enormous real-estate deal with cultural window dressing, a case history of how the zoning rules can be used to do something they were never meant to encourage.”

To Nouvel, the impulse to reject his 53rd Street tower is a symptom of an urban death wish. “As in all cities, there are conservative associations that don’t want a construction site near them and don’t want anything to happen,” he says. That’s the classic response of a spurned avant-gardiste: to accuse critics of reactionary sentiments. But Nouvel also sees the battle of Tower Verre as part of a larger struggle to define New York: Is it a more or less finished city, a museum of itself that must place a premium on preservation? Or should it still participate in the rude business of progress?

For him, cutting his building down to size was a way of protecting the skyline and stifling the manic ambition that created it in the first place. “Embalming the city—that means gradually turning it into nothing more than a tourist destination,” Nouvel says. “Paris runs the same risk.” (Nouvel lives in Paris, and although he has built several high-profile projects there, he also designed two separate skyscrapers that were approved, then shelved.) “The most extraordinary cities create energy as they form themselves, and that energy and complexity are qualities you can’t abandon. Our responsibility is to bear witness to our era. A city’s identity is not just something you preserve. It’s something you create too.”

Nouvel speaks clearly about the kind of city he abhors; less so about how a modern megalopolis like New York should continue to develop—aside from building his designs. In 2005, he wrote the “Louisiana Manifesto,” which reads like a French philosopher-architect’s cri de coeur as imagined by Stephen Colbert: “Architecture has to be impregnated and to impregnate, to be impressionable and impress, to absorb and emit … Let us denounce automatic architecture, the architecture of our serial production systems! Let us attack it! Engulf it! This soulless architecture crying out to be contradicted.”

This torrent of verbiage disguises an analytical approach based on a pair of solid principles. First, any new building on the skyline ought to start a conversation between the existing city and the fresh addition, each nudging and coaxing and shaping the other, in the way a family rebalances around each new child. Tower Verre, for example, tapers to an old-fashioned peak, lightening a skyline squared off with half a century’s worth of blocky modernist cubes. Second, a new monument shouldn’t aspire to timelessness, but speak with vivid specificity of an instant in a city’s life. You can grasp what this means at 100 Eleventh, which is already a poignant relic, containing within it a memory of the era that made it possible, the heat of the present, and the specter of a glorious obsolescence. Standing outside the building, Nouvel shouts over the traffic and imagines the impression his creation might make on future drivers. As they speed by, fleetingly dazzled by a reflection from the façade’s mosaic of windows, he suggests, they will glance up through the windshield and think of 2010. The building will date itself, Nouvel agrees, and that is the finest gift an architect can bequeath to posterity: “It will show what moved us in that period, which is to say … now.”

Air Une nouvelle attraction immersive dans un gratte-ciel de New York

(New York) Les quelques chanceux qui ont pu s’immerger cette semaine dans la dernière attraction new-yorkaise avaient l’impression de « flotter dans les airs », évoluant sur des miroirs et des plaques de verre à 300 m au-dessus du vide, dans le quatrième plus haut gratte-ciel de la mégapole.

Air, une installation artistique dite immersive, réalisée par l’artiste Kenzo Digital, ouvre au public jeudi, dans la nouvelle tour One Vanderbilt, au cœur de Manhattan. Un ascenseur fait monter les intrépides en 42 secondes, pour une vue époustouflante sur l’île new-yorkaise encadrée par l’East River et l’Hudson.

Là, les visiteurs se promènent sur trois étages dans une sorte d’observatoire géant tout en verre, Summit One Vanderbilt, offrant un spectacle extraordinaire tout en faisant perdre tous ses repères.

Avec le sentiment de « flotter dans les airs ».

L’expérience « modifie la perception de l’espace et plonge le visiteur dans un halo de silhouettes et de gratte-ciel », selon Kenzo Digital.

Pour Nick Barat, l’un des rares visiteurs triés sur le volet avant l’ouverture du 21 octobre, l’expérience permet de « penser la relation que chacun noue avec la ville ».

Située à l’angle de la célèbre 42 e  rue et de l’avenue Vanderbilt, la tour éponyme a été conçue par le cabinet Kohn Pedersen Fox, construite entre 2016 et 2019 et ouverte en septembre 2020. Elle fait 397 m — 427 m avec sa flèche — ce qui la propulse à la 4 e place à New York, derrière la tour One World Trade Center, sur le site détruit par les attentats du 11-Septembre, les tours résidentielles de l’ensemble Central Park Tower et le gratte-ciel 111 sur la 57 e  rue.

What an incredible tour! Just look at all the amazing sites that we got to visit! I loved doing the night tour because although it goes fast, you avoid the crowds and the heat.
