First, is it hard to get clients as a travel agent?

It can be at first, but once you establish your business, a domino effect occurs. Most travel agents — or travel advisors (we prefer the modern term) — start out by booking trips for friends, family and peers before slowly branching out with referrals. It takes time and patience, but with effort, your client base will grow.

How do travel agents typically market themselves?

Marketing yourself as a travel agent is pretty similar to how any independent professional — real estate agents, CPAs, insurance agents, etc. — markets themself. 

A social media presence, email marketing & landing pages are incredibly beneficial

Social media accounts, email campaigns and landing pages (i.e., a website) are critical for any business that relies on generating leads online. 

Social media con be a beast, and not everyone knows how to leverage it appropriately, nor how to produce engaging content. Moreover, plenty of travel agents market themselves on platforms without first building a suitable audience, or they invest way too much time into a platform that doesn’t match their particular niche. 

Many people, particularly younger travel advisors, also mistake email marketing for an old-school method, missing out on a vital tool. The same can be said for websites. High-quality websites, even small sites that are more typical of travel advisors, can be costly to maintain and usually only generate leads after substantial investments in time and effort.

The most successful travel advisors tend to incorporate all three tools, but it’s a matter of working smarter, not harder. We’ll come back to this.

Successful travel agents invest in their interpersonal skills…

Of all the jobs in the travel industry , travel advisors probably need the best interpersonal skills, and not just in the ways you might assume. 

Great communication skills and a friendly, accommodating demeanor are important, of course. But it’s also pertinent to be able to intuit what clients want. Not everyone understands the industry, and clients can’t always convey what they want out of their experience. 1. Clearly convey the value of using your services vs. other platforms

Clarity is very important when it comes to travel planning. A lot of travelers go through online travel agencies like Expedia and Booking.com simply because they aren’t aware of the benefits of booking through a travel advisor.

Complicated bookings can be intimidating, but they can also be a big draw for potential clients. Savvy travelers know that online travel agencies aren’t great for elaborate bookings, so they often choose to go through travel advisors instead.

3. If you have one, define your niche

An underrated point in learning how to market yourself as a travel agent: developing a niche, at least to start. 

Marketing yourself as a generalist can be difficult simply because there are so many travel advisors that already do so. By focusing on a particular niche, you’re saying, “Hey, I’m really good at booking this type of travel,” and you may be more likely to find interested clients. If anything, it’s a good way to stand out.

As you book clients, you’ll have examples to show new leads who want similar experiences. Then over time, you can branch out, especially with repeat clients who want to try something new.

So what type of travel agent jobs and niches exist? All sorts. There are corporate travel agents , luxury travel agents…the list is nearly endless, and not limited to specific types of travel (e.g., corporate, leisure, etc.). You’ll find many travel advisors who book vacations in specific areas, like unique places to stay in Colorado or the best places to visit in Italy . It’s really up to you.

4. Practice & refine your first impression

Your first impression starts way before you ever speak with a client. Barring family, friends and coworkers, your potential clients are likely going to hear about you through impersonal means. This could be a referral from a peer, a social media post and so on. 

Acing that first impression takes a lot of work ( building a sales funnel is very helpful), but it will go a long way in ensuring your success. You want something that effectively answers the question, “Why should I book my travels with you?”

Having a presence on social media is highly valuable. It’s a great, low-cost (or free) tool that can expose your business to leads via complex algorithms. 

That said, crafting quality content is easier said than done. Billions of people use social media. Chances are, someone out there is producing more and better content already. But that doesn’t mean you can’t carve out a market share.

This is where consistency and variety come into play. The former ensures that you’re posting and engaging with your audience regularly through comments, direct messages…you get the idea. The latter simply means keeping your content fresh. If you’re always posting about the exact same stuff and using the same photos, people will quickly lose interest — this doesn't mean you can’t post related content, though, especially if you’re sticking to a niche.

For instance, you could waive or discount planning fees — not travel agent commissions (these are usually governed by supplier and host agency agreements) — for any clients that send new leads your way. 

8. Invest in paid advertising (if you have your own website)

If you have your own website, pay-per-click advertising may make sense. Platforms like Google Ads allow you to target specific groups that may be more likely to engage with your website. 

Basically, you bid on specific keywords — think boutique hotels in New Orleans or things to do in Porto, Portugal — and Google shows your website, usually with corresponding content, near the top of the search results. From there, potential clients are more likely to click on your website. The downside is that this type of advertising gets expensive. 

Alternatively, search engine optimization (SEO) is a highly effective method of boosting website leads that may require less investment if you implement changes yourself. However, this requires considerable effort and time to see viable results.

The Best Travel Referral Programs

‌For Tortuga company retreats, we've stayed at:

  • A small apartment in the heart of San Sebastían

  • An 8-bedroom plantation house in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans

The best part of these accommodations is that they were all free. Yes, free.

We paid for them with Airbnb credits.

I stumbled into the world of referral programs accidentally. When I wrote a post on Airbnb competitors , I included my personal referral link on a whim.

The post started to rank well on Google for popular searches about Airbnb competitors and alternatives. People read the post and signed up using my link. I started to notice a trickle of email alerts from Airbnb. I filtered them out of my inbox and didn't think much of it. The next time I logged into Airbnb, I had hundreds of dollars in credits waiting for me to use.

In this article, I'll outline how referral programs work. If you're already familiar with them, skip ahead to the "Best Travel Referral Programs" section to get a discount on your next trip.

How Referrals Work

Airbnb, like many modern travel sites, encourages referrals as a way to incentivize "word of mouth" marketing at a reasonable cost. Referral marketing works much like affiliate marketing except that the buyer benefits just as much as the referrer or affiliate.

Most sites use a similar offer:

  • You invite a friend to the service by sharing your personal URL or sign up code.
  • When your friend uses the service, s/he saves $X on the first booking.
  • After s/he's paid for the booking, you get the same $X in credits for your next booking.

Everybody wins.

Before you start referring friends, you should know about two caveats that come with using these programs:

  • Referral programs are only valid for new users . If you refer someone who is already signed up for that site, neither of you will get credits. Travel sites use referral programs to get new customers, not more bookings from existing customers.
  • Referral programs are meant for your personal connections, not the general public . How and where you refer people can be a gray area, but most companies have specific policies in their terms of service (TOS). Read the below example which used to be on Uber's site for more details.
[Y]ou can share your invite link with your personal connections via email, Twitter feeds, Facebook pages, personal blogs, etc. where you are the primary content owner. However public distribution on sites where you are a contributor but not the primary content owner (e.g., Wikipedia, coupon websites) is not allowed. Promoting your referral code via Search Engine Marketing (e.g., AdWords/Yahoo/Bing) is also not allowed.

I recommend operating within each company's guidelines for referrals so that you can maximize your credits and don't lose them because of a TOS violation. I might have run afoul of these rules once or twice in the past.

Next, we’ll discuss the specific sites and apps that offer the best referral programs.

Accommodations

Depending on the destination, I stay in Airbnbs, local guesthouses, or hotels where I have status and points.

Airbnb Referrals

Airbnb is often my first choice because of cost and location. Unlike hotels, Airbnb apartments are located in the most interesting neighborhoods of a city. If you're traveling with a group, the cost per person goes down with each bedroom that you add. At a hotel, those costs scale linearly.

Join Airbnb here for $40 off your first stay.

After you've joined or if you're already a user, go to Airbnb's Invite Friends page . Find the "Share a link" section, and you'll see a link that looks like this:

Share that link. When someone signs up for Airbnb through that link, you'll earn $20 in credits when they travel and $75 if they host.

I've used the Airbnb referral program for thousands of dollars in free stays on business trips and to book the accommodations for our team retreats.

For a few years, Airbnb was my most lucrative referral program. Ironically, a post I wrote about Airbnb competitors ranked well in Google and drove a lot of traffic to my referral link. I racked up thousands of dollars in credits. Then my account started getting buggy.

After some back-and-forth, Airbnb informed me of a new cap of $5,000 in total referral credits . Since then I've received conflicting messaging and had problems redeeming my credits.

I love staying in Airbnbs and have tolerated the hassles given how much money I've saved through their program. You shouldn't have any issues earning or redeeming credits.

HotelTonight Referrals

When I travel last minute, I turn to HotelTonight. ( Update : Airbnb acquired HotelTonight in 2019.)

If you prefer credits toward hotel stays, check out HotelTonight . The HotelTonight (HT) app offers discounted rooms. The tradeoff is that you can only book up to a week ahead. HT started with "day of" booking but has since expanded to "week of" booking. You can download the app for iPhone or Android .

Use the invite code FPERROTTA for $25 off your first booking.

To find your share code, download the HotelTonight app. Click the icon in the bottom right corner to go to your profile. Scroll down and click the "Invite Friends" button. On that page, you will see your share code. Like my code (see above), yours will be based on your name.

When you refer a new user to Hotel Tonight, they save $25 on their first booking, and you get $25 in credits towards your next stay.

Transportation

Before Uber, San Francisco was woefully short on cabs. You couldn't get a ride at peak times or to/from remote locations. Ridesharing has been a game changer in the Bay.

Set your exact pick up location, track your car while you wait, and, most importantly for me, pay with your credit card, not cash. Paying through the app streamlines your ride and means that you can earn more credit card points.

Uber Referrals

For ridesharing services, I use Uber at the start of each month because of the $10 monthly credits I get through my American Express Platinum Card .

Join Uber here and get your first ride (up to $10) free .

After you've joined or if you're already a user, you can find your invite code in the app. Click the hamburger icon (three horizontal lines) in the top left corner. Then click "Free Rides." The next page includes your invite code.

When you refer a friend to Uber, you each get a free ride worth up to $10 .

Lyft Referrals

After I use my Uber credits for the month, I switch over to Lyft . The service and app are similar as is their referral offer. Both companies are in an arms race to win a ridesharing monopoly.

Use the invite code FRED303 for $10 off your first ride.

Download the Lyft app, open it, then click the gift icon in the top right corner. The next page will include your referral code and contact list for easy sharing.

Like Uber, both you and your referrals get $10 in credit with their first ride.

Go Forth and Refer

The newest generation of travel sites and apps will offer you credits for referring your friends. Everyone benefits: you get credit toward a future trip, your friend saves money, and the company gets a new customer.

Email marketing is a great way to keep in touch with your Travel Agent clients. You can email them about upcoming deals, new products, and specials that you offer for repeat customers. It will also help fill up the idle time between vacations! Another benefit of emailing Travel Agents regularly is the ability to get on their radar when they are looking for a Travel Agent.

We recommend using Mail Chimp or Constant Contact to create your email marketing campaigns because both of these services provide you with free templates and tutorials, which makes it even easier for Travel Agencies without much tech skills to get up and running in no time!

Start A YouTube Channel

Starting a YouTube channel may sound like too much work, but the results are worth the effort. Start simple by having webinars where the suppliers are presenting. Simply record the meeting and upload it to YouTube.

Once you feel comfortable, do a presentation of your own to show your expertise. This will be one more way for people to feel a connection with you and want to work with you.

Over time you can see where your YouTube channel takes you. Some travel advisors film room tours, cruise ship tours, or experiences like wine tastings, and those videos become their only means of marketing.

Get Results With Social Media

Start your Travel Agent social media with a profile on the main channels like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. And remember to include a video! Just like YouTube, you can use these profiles as another way for people to get to know you better. It is also an opportunity for them to see what life is like working with you or planning their next vacation with you.

While you want to have a social media strategy for all the main social media sites, focus mostly on one to not be overwhelmed. Today, I would recommend TikTok due to the potential for reaching new audiences.

To get started on TikTok, all you need is a phone and the app. Now just start making TikTok videos until you find something that works. Try to be as helpful as possible. You can use photos to create a slideshow-like post that are easy to make.

Build up your Travel Agency Website

The Travel Agent website should be like an online Travel Guide. You can provide all kinds of helpful information such as:

– Resource pages that include links to your favorite sites and blogs

– Blog posts featuring tips for traveling with kids, pets, etc…

– Travel guides for specific destinations around the world so people know where they want to go and what they need to do when they get there

– Travel packing lists, pre trip checklists, etc…

You can include all of this in your Travel Agent website. The goal is for people visiting the site to feel like you are a friend who knows them better than anyone else so that when it comes time for them to plan their next vacation, they come to you first.

This will also help with SEO. As you create new, in-depth posts that are answering the questions that people are asking, you are more likely to see success.

For example, I know a lot of people ask if you should wear shorts in Italy. When I went to Italy I saw plenty of people wearing shorts, so I wrote a quick post about it. That article took off and brought thousands of people to my website who were looking for the answer.

Get Partners to Write Guest Post For You

In addition to creating your own content, ask other partners to write blog posts for you in the form of a guest post. You can partner with other travel agencies with a different focus than you or you can ask suppliers if they would like to provide a few posts for you. This is a win-win because you get more content on your website, and they get more exposure.

You can in turn write guest posts for their websites, something search engines will love.

Encourage your individual agents to do the same thing. They can start their own blogs and write some content for the travel agency website as well.

Start A Referral Program

  • You must have traveled with us before.
  • The friend you refer must be a new traveler to Friendly Planet.
  • Your friend books one of our scheduled tours or packages .

The Fine Print

* You get the gist. But please note all the rules that apply to this program:

Referring Travelers (you) must have traveled with us previously. (If you have already booked but have not yet departed, you may begin to earn referral credits only after you complete travel.) For each eligible new traveler you refer (per above), we'll issue your $100 credit upon completion of travel and notify you by email. This email serves as your record of the credits. For each new traveler, only one past traveler may claim credits.

Referred Travelers (your friends) must be new to Friendly Planet. They must not have booked or traveled with us in the past and must not have an existing booking for future travel. Referred travelers must book a scheduled tour or package . Our other products or services, including private custom group travel and Biblical Journeys tours , do not qualify for this program.

Your referred travelers give us your full name, phone number and email address at the time of booking. If this information is unavailable at time of booking, it must be provided by 7 days after date of booking. Otherwise, the credit is no longer available.

We'll verify that you're a past traveler and that your referred traveler is new to Friendly Planet, and we'll then apply a $100 discount per referred traveler to the total due for the booking. For reservations made online and paid in full at time of booking, once verified, the referred traveler will be refunded $100.

Can I really travel for free? Yes! Use your credits toward all charges on your Friendly Planet invoice. (Personal expenses, excursions or services purchased on tour, and any other costs not on your invoice are your own responsibility.)

Redeeming Credits: Cash in as many credits as you'd like towards a new booking of a scheduled tour or package. If you have accumulated more credits than the total value of the trip, your remaining credits will carry over to future travel. Use credits for yourself or for anyone traveling with you, or transfer any of your credits to anyone you choose, provided you notify us first in writing. Credits used toward a purchase which you later cancel are forfeited. Credits are valid for up to 36 months from the date of issue and are not redeemable for cash.

Credits cannot be combined with any other marketing promotion, offer, coupon or discount. If at time of booking, the referred traveler would like to use a sale or coupon greater than or equal to a $100 value, the sale or coupon discount will be applied to their booking instead of the $100 referral credit. The referring traveler will still get their $100 for referring their friend. Any bookings made via a travel agency are not eligible to receive refer a friend credits. We reserve the right to amend or discontinue this program at any time without notification.

Your privacy: When you provide us with the name and contact information of Referring Travelers or Referred Travelers under this program, we will only use and store that information to verify their status as a booked traveler and/or eligibility to participate for this program, and not for any other purpose.
