Allianz Travel Insurance Review: Is It Worth the Cost?

  • Annual or single-trip policies are available.
  • Multiple types of insurance available.
  • All plans include access to a 24/7 assistance hotline.
  • More expensive than average.
  • CFAR upgrades are not available.
  • Rental car protection is only available by adding the One Trip Rental Car protector to your plan or by purchasing a standalone rental car plan.

Allianz travel insurance is highly regarded, and for good reason. Allianz offers five plans, so travelers' policies can cover what’s important to them. As well, children under 17 can be included for free on an eligible plan, so it can make sense that those seeking a plan that they can customize will consider Allianz.

Why trust NerdWallet?

Our Nerdy editorial team aims to be a starting point in your travel insurance research. We default toward transparency and follow a comprehensive methodology for rating and reviewing travel insurance companies. Advertisers and advertising relationships do not influence our ratings. Learn more about our strict editorial guidelines .

Around for over 100 years, Allianz has had a hand in insuring some iconic times in history, including the Wright brothers’ first flight and the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge.

These days, Allianz’s travel insurance arm boasts a score of 4.3 on Trustpilot and an A+ Financial Strength Rating (FSR), according to credit rating firm AM Best.

Allianz’s five plans offer different kinds of coverage, and not all of them have a standard set of benefits.

For example, Allianz travel insurance medical coverage isn’t available with the OneTrip Cancellation Plus plan, while general Allianz travel insurance coverage such as trip cancellation isn’t offered on the OneTrip Emergency Medical plan.

The three comprehensive plans Allianz offers provide varying levels of standard benefits.

Allianz health insurance coverage : Provides reimbursement for accidents and illnesses during your trip.

Trip interruption : Covers nonrefundable costs incurred as a result of your trip being interrupted.

Trip cancellation : Repays prepaid, nonrefundable costs such as hotels and tour bookings in the event your trip is canceled.

Lost luggage : Covers the cost of replacing your personal effects when your luggage is lost.

Delayed luggage : Reimburses reasonable expenses, such as for clothing and toiletries, when your luggage has been delayed.

Emergency evacuation : Arranges and pays the cost to transport you to a medical facility for care.

Pre-existing condition coverage : Covers costs for acute flare-ups of pre-existing conditions, as long as you meet eligibility requirements.

Allianz’s policies have a broad array of inclusions. Here's a look at the five single-trip plans, and the included coverage amount.

Allianz also offers multitrip plans and a plan that provides rental car coverage only.

» Learn more: How does annual travel insurance work?

Add-on options

Allianz doesn’t offer many options when it comes to customization.

Rental car insurance : Available on all plans as an upgrade, Allianz’s rental car insurance provides coverage in the event of theft, damage or collision.

Cancel Anytime : Allows you to cancel a trip for almost any unforeseeable reason and get 80% of your nonrefundable costs back.

Don’t want to pay for travel insurance? A variety of travel credit cards offer complimentary trip insurance assuming you pay for the trip with your card.

Each Allianz plan has varying coverage levels, and some specifically exclude benefits such as trip cancellation.

However, certain types of situations and activities are generally excluded:

Extreme sports.

The use of alcohol or drugs or any symptoms as a result.

Normal pregnancy or childbirth.

Participation in sporting events.

Natural disasters.

On a 5-star scale, NerdWallet rated Allianz 3.5 stars. Jump to see our methodology.

A sample trip for a 36-year-old traveler from Indiana to Canada for five days found that the cheapest Allianz plan cost $166. If you were to spring for the premium plan, which increases your coverage limits, expect to pay $291.

When looking across multiple providers, the basic plan for the same sample trip ranges in cost from $10 to $202. Note that price isn't the only differentiating factor. Coverage isn't identical across plans; each company offers various levels of scope, limits and exclusions.

How much does Allianz travel insurance cost? To get an idea of the cost of an Allianz travel insurance policy, we generated a quote for a sample trip.

In this example, we have a 37-year-old traveler from North Carolina heading to Japan for a two-week vacation, with a total trip cost of $5,000.

Notably, Allianz travel insurance costs increased dramatically when benefits for trip cancellation and trip interruption were included, so if you don’t have a lot of nonrefundable costs associated with your trip, you may want to stick with the OneTrip Emergency Medical plan.

To purchase an Allianz travel insurance policy, go to Allianz’s get a quote page , where you can choose different plan types, including single trip, annual or rental car policies.

From there, you’ll need to fill out your trip information, such as travel dates and destination and your age. Then, you'll be presented with eligible plans and prices. From there, you’ll be able to pick one that suits your needs and complete the checkout process.

Consider comparison shopping

If you're not 100% sold on purchasing a plan from Allianz, you can use a travel insurance aggregator to compare policies across multiple companies at once.

The right Allianz plan for you depends on your trip. This is especially true for the OneTrip Emergency Medical plan and the OneTrip Cancellation Plus plan since both are limited in what they cover.

Before purchasing a plan, review the costs of your trip, whether you need medical coverage and how much you’re willing to pay.

Allianz provides 24/7 travel assistance to customers. Within the U.S. or Canada, call 800-654-1908 for help. Otherwise, call 804-281-5700.

Allianz’s 24/7 assistance can help you with issues such as finding new flights, providing you with information about your destination, helping you retrieve lost luggage, replacing prescriptions and more.

Filing a claim with Allianz can be done online via its claims center .

You’ll need to have information on hand such as what happened, what the claim is for, when the issue happened and how much you’re claiming.

You’ll also need to provide proof of your loss, which can be uploaded to the claims center.

Is Allianz travel insurance good? Allianz can be more expensive than competitors, but its different plans can help mitigate the cost by insuring only what’s important to you.

Its three comprehensive plans also include coverage for pre-existing conditions, which isn’t something you’ll find everywhere.

If you have a plan with trip interruption or trip delay benefits, you may be covered when your flight has been canceled. This can include refunds for prepaid expenses and costs for lodging and meals.

The length of time it takes for a refund can vary; factors that influence how long can include the claim you make, the documentation you provide and the processing speed of the insurance provider.

Allianz travel insurance medical coverage is secondary. This means it pays out after any other eligible plans you may have.

Yes, Allianz plans cover COVID.

Travel insurance

NerdWallet's ratings for travel insurance companies take into account the following details about each insurer:

Scope of coverage.

Customizability.

Consumer experience and complaints.

The best travel insurers excel in all of these categories. They provide the information people need to make a purchase without any surprises along the way. They offer insurance at a fair price and allow customers to customize plans to meet their coverage preferences. They're also able to keep their customers happy throughout the relationship.

Data collection and review process

NerdWallet collects over a dozen data points for each insurer we analyze from their public-facing websites and third-party analyses. These data points are then compared against one another and against NerdWallet's standards for good travel insurance companies to determine a star rating.

Data is collected on a regular basis and reviewed by our editorial team for consistency and accuracy. Final star ratings are presented on a scale of one to five stars, where a one-star score represents "poor" and a five-star score represents "excellent."

The reviews team

The writers and editors behind NerdWallet's travel insurance reviews are insurance specialists who have had their work featured by or appear in The Associated Press, The Washington Post, The New York Times, the Chicago-Sun Times, U.S. News & World Report and the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing. Each writer and editor follows NerdWallet’s strict guidelines for editorial independence .

In addition to travel insurance, the team covers travel rewards programs, airlines and hotels.

Rating specifics

Our star ratings are weighted based on our editorial and professional opinions. We use the following weightings when rating travel insurers:

Scope of coverage (25%).

Customizability (25%).

Consumer experience and complaints (25%).

Cost (25%).

Scope of coverage ratings are based on assessments of a company’s standard protections, including:

Travel medical insurance.

Trip cancellation.

Trip interruption.

Trip delay.

Baggage and personal belongings, lost luggage.

Emergency medical assistance.

Emergency medical evacuation.

Emergency medical repatriation.

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance.

Rental car coverage.

Customizability ratings factor in whether coverage limits are fixed prices or a percentage of the trip cost (the percentage is generally better), whether a policy has customizations available, and the number of bonus features.

24-hour assistance.

Pre-existing medical conditions coverage.

Extreme sport coverage.

CFAR add on availability.

Travel health insurance.

Interruption for Any Reason.

Travel Inconvenience.

Cancel for Work Reasons.

Electronics coverage.

Consumer experience ratings are based on provider reviews on Squaremouth.com. If the company is not in the Squaremouth database, we default to Google reviews.

Affordability ratings are based on the percentage of total trip cost a plan costs a policyholder. Less than 4% is considered excellent, whereas over 9% is considered poor.

If you travel at all – whether it’s once in a while or every chance you get – travel insurance is something that needs to be on your radar.

If you’re booking an expensive trip, you want to be protected in case you need to cancel it at the last minute. You also want to have a good time and not worry about how you’d pay for healthcare in an emergency. That’s why it’s a good idea to find a policy with both trip cancellation insurance and medical coverage.

It’s easy to see why you need travel insurance. However, with so many companies out there, choosing the best travel insurance for your particular trip might seem a bit daunting.

Don’t worry. We’ve got you covered.

Today, we’re going to review the multiple plans offered by Allianz Global Assistance . We’ll talk about what each plan includes, how much coverage it provides, its strengths and weaknesses, and cost.

We’ve got nine plans to cover, so let’s get to it!

Allianz Global Assistance offers two categories of travel insurance plans – single trip and annual (multi-trip) plans. The annual plans provide coverage for 365 days and are a great solution for frequent travelers. There are five single trip plans and four annual plans.

Single Trip Plans:

OneTrip Cancellation Plus Plan

Onetrip basic plan, onetrip prime plan, onetrip premier plan, onetrip emergency medical plan.

Annual (Multi-Trip) Plans:

  • AllTrips Basic Plan

AllTrips Prime Plan

Allianz Global Assistance: What’s Included?

All Allianz Global Assistance travel insurance plans include a 24-hour multi-lingual hotline. Their specialists can assist with any inquiries about your policy, making a claim, getting emergency medical treatment, language interpretation, replacing passports, getting legal assistance, or even securing cash in an emergency.

With nine different plans to choose from, Allianz Global Assistance has something to meet every traveler’s needs .

Allianz Global Assistance Single Trip Plans

We’ll start with the single trip plans. You can purchase a single trip plan for any trip lasting up to 180 days.

The OneTrip Cancellation Plus Plan is Allianz Global Assistance’s most economical travel insurance plan. It features three types of protection: Trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay.

The OneTrip Cancellation Plus Plan can protect you from financial loss in the event you have to cancel your trip before departure or return home suddenly after departure for a covered reason. It helps recover non-refundable deposits and payments for airfare, accommodations, and the like. It may also work well as cruise insurance . The amount of coverage is the value of your trip. It also can cover you for up to $150 a day for expenses related to trip delay of six hours or more.

Note that only specific reasons for trip cancellation or interruption are covered. You can’t just change your mind about a trip and get your money back. Refer to the certificate of insurance for the nitty-gritty details, but the reasons are pretty standard. It includes things like interrupted or cancelled trips due to a natural disaster, you or a traveling companion falling ill, a family member becoming seriously sick or injured, losing your job, legal proceedings, cancelled flight due to weather , etc. These conditions apply to trip protection included in all Allianz Global Assistance travel insurance plans, and it’s important to understand them.

The Allianz OneTrip Basic Plan includes trip cancellation and interruption plus some basic (hence the name) medical benefits. Here are the amounts you’re working with:

Billed as Allianz Global Assistance’s most popular plan, One Trip Prime provides enhanced coverage beyond the OneTrip Basic Plan and offers free coverage for children under 17 traveling with a parent or grandparent. This makes it a great solution for families! See the table below for coverage maximums.

The OneTrip Premiere Plan covers everything OneTrip Prime does but with substantially more post-departure coverage.

The OneTrip Emergency Medical Plan is Allianz Global Assistance’s solution for travelers who aren’t looking for trip protection but need medical and travel mishap coverage. It is the only single trip plan that includes travel accident coverage (benefit payable if, while on your trip, you have an accident resulting in loss of life, sight, hands, or feet).

Single Trip Insurance Plans from Allianz – Get complete insurance coverage for your next trip with a single-trip plan from Allianz. Get a quote here .

Annual (Multi-Trip) Plans

The AllTrips Plans are designed for people who travel several times per year. These plans can save the frequent traveler a lot of hard-earned cash. Trip insurance benefits are for the full year period, while medical coverage is per trip.

Personally, our family buys annual coverage through Allianz Global Assistance. We get good coverage for an entire year at a fair price. Here’s a list of all the annual plans they have available.

AllTrips Basic

The AllTrips Basic Plan is for people who want bare bones emergency medical coverage while traveling but don’t require trip cancellation. This plan covers trips lasting 45 days or less. It’s also best for solo individuals and not for families. If you’re interested in family protection, a Premier plan is often a bit cheaper.

The AllTrips Prime Plan builds on the Basic Plan by adding in trip cancellation and interruption coverage. Along with a few other changes to coverage rates, the AllTrips Prime Plan covers trips scheduled to last for 45 days or less.

The AllTrips Executive Plan caters to the frequent business traveler. That’s why it can cover the loss of business equipment and the cost of renting replacement equipment. Trips scheduled to last 45 days or less are covered.

The Allianz AllTrips Premier Plan is the policy our family carries. It is an all-inclusive travel insurance plan for frequent travelers. The plan includes more medical coverage than any other annual plan, trip insurance, and excellent baggage and travel delay benefits. The AllTrips Premier Plan covers trips lasting 90 days or less and includes all members of a household for one price.

Annual Travel Insurance Plans from Allianz – Protect your travels for an entire year. Compare annual travel insurance plans from Allianz! (Psst…they’re so good, we even have one.) Get a quote here.

Allianz Travel Insurance: What Isn’t Covered?

Allianz Travel Insurance offers 9 different plans to meet the needs of different travelers. This review details each option to see which is right for you.

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions – If You Don’t Qualify for the Waiver

You know how most travel insurance policies don’t cover pre-existing medical conditions? Well, plans from Allianz Global Assistance do –  if you qualify for a waiver.

Be sure to check the terms of the waiver for the plan you’re considering. They vary a bit from plan to plan, but they all require that you be a U.S. resident as of the day you purchase your plan and that you be medically able to travel. Some require that the value of your trip be less than $10,000.

Allianz Global Assistance has a look-back period of 120 days, meaning – if you experienced symptoms of a medical condition or sought treatment during that time frame – it is considered pre-existing. This is a relatively short look-back period, as I’ve seen them as long as two years.

If you don’t qualify for the waiver associated with your plan, then your pre-existing medical condition isn’t covered.

Extreme Sports

Unlike travel insurance providers like World Nomads , Allianz Global Assistance does not offer coverage for losses incurred while participating in extreme sports. Check the certificate of insurance for the details, but don’t expect to be covered if your travel plans involve things like bungee jumping or deep-sea scuba diving.

Mental or Nervous Health Disorders

Allianz Global Assistance excludes losses related to symptoms (including physical symptoms) of anything classified as a mental or nervous health disorder. This includes conditions like depression, anxiety, and even Alzheimer’s. Note that the exclusion only applies to trip cancellation and insurance coverage, not emergency medical.

The Standard Exclusions

It’s the norm for travel health insurance policies to exclude losses related to:

  • Criminal activity
  • Drug and alcohol abuse
  • Normal pregnancy and childbirth
  • Natural disasters (except when covered under trip cancellation or interruption)

Note that this is a summary of the exclusions and is not exhaustive. You should always refer to the certificate of insurance for the plan you’re considering to be sure you understand what is and isn’t covered.

Allianz Travel Insurance: Who Is Covered?

Allianz Global Assistance covers travelers of any age as long as they are fit to travel. For seniors aged 80 and over, documentation from a physician confirming fitness to travel may be required.

Allianz Global Assistance : Pros and Cons

Who should buy allianz global assistance travel insurance.

  • Families – If you’re traveling with your family, the Allianz OneTrip Prime and Premier plans , as well as the AllTrips Premier Plan, offer excellent value. The OneTrip Prime and Premier Plans cover kids under 17 traveling with their parents or grandparents for free. That’s right – one kid, two kids, three kids – the more, the merrier! Similarly, the AllTrips Premier Plan covers your entire household all year.
  • Frequent Travelers – The Allianz Global Assistance annual plans can save frequent travelers some serious dough. In fact, a couple only has to take two seven-day trips a year for an annual plan to become a better buy.
  • Business Travelers – If you travel for work and are responsible for your own insurance, the Allianz AllTrips Executive Plan might be a fitting solution. It provides reasonable coverage for all categories and can protect you in the event your business equipment is lost or stolen.
  • Seniors – Unlike some travel insurance providers, Allianz Global Assistance will cover travelers of any age, providing they are medically able to travel (a doctor might need to sign off on that).
  • People with pre-existing medical conditions – Allianz Global Assistance has two things going for it when it comes to pre-existing medical conditions. The first is that you might qualify to have the pre-existing medical condition exclusion waived. It varies for each plan, but in general, the waiver criteria are quite generous. Second, they only consider a condition pre-existing if you’ve been dealing with it within the last 120 days. That’s called the look-back period, and it’s relatively short. Sure, I’ve seen them shorter, but I’ve also seen them much longer.

Who Should Skip This Travel Insurance

  • Travelers looking for high levels of emergency medical coverage – I’m not gonna sugar coat it – none of the Allianz Travel Insurance plans offer particularly high levels of emergency medical insurance. The OneTrip Premier and Emergency Medical Plans, as well as the AllTrips Executive and Premier Plans, provide $50,000 in coverage. That’s the minimum I would travel with in most situations. This might not be a problem for you if you’re going somewhere with cheap and accessible healthcare, or if you have another form of medical coverage. But it’s something to be aware of.
  • Adventurous travelers – Allianz Travel Insurance excludes most adventure sports and activities. That means if you get injured while bungee jumping on your trip, you’re on your own. Again, if you’re into adventure travel, check out a policy like this.

How to Buy Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz Travel Insurance offers 9 different plans to meet the needs of different travelers. This review details each option to see which is right for you.

You can buy an Allianz Travel Insurance policy quickly and easily online or over the phone.

I recommend popping online to grab a quote, compare plans, and explore the resources on their website. They do a good job of explaining the coverage in simple terms. If you have questions, you can always contact Allianz Global Assistance via phone, email, or live chat.

How to Make a Claim

Allianz Global Assistance recently redesigned their travel claim forms to be shorter and more straightforward – no one will argue with that!

Customers can submit a claim online using the online claims management tool, or even through the Allianz Global Assistance TravelSmart App. Just look for the “claims” button!

Once you submit a claim, the confirmation page shows you what documentation is required (you should also get this in an email). If you have any questions, you can reach out to Allianz Global Assistance 24 hours a day for assistance.

Allianz Global Assistance offers customers three ways to get reimbursed: A check in the mail, debit disbursement, or direct deposit. Opting for electronic payment – debit disbursement or direct deposit – will mean you get your money as quickly as possible.

Make sure you make your claim within 90 days of your loss.

Allianz Travel Insurance: Do I Need It?

Travel insurance is likely something you shouldn’t go without. Whether you should choose an Allianz product depends on your needs and the kind of coverage you’re looking for. I really like that Allianz Global Assistance has so many options – there’s something in the mix for most, but not all, travelers.

As someone who frequently travels with my family and likes having peace of mind with high emergency medical coverage, I think the AllTrips Premier Plan is an excellent buy. In fact, this is the policy we carry ourselves. It can cover your entire household for a full year, can provide up to $50,000 for emergency medical expenses per insured, and it offers reasonable coverage for all other categories.

If you only travel once a year, the OneTrip Premier Plan comes with up to $50,000 in emergency medical and comes with generous trip interruption and cancellation coverage. If I was a once-a-year kind of traveler, that’s a plan I would consider.

allianz travel insurance instagram

If you travel for business and need extra coverage, the AllTrips Executive Plan is there for you. If you’re looking for just trip protection or just medical coverage, you’ve got options for that, too.

In my opinion, the Basic Plans are too basic for most travel situations. The levels of medical coverage are too low to cover a major emergency, and the more robust plans aren’t that much more expensive. For that reason, I wouldn’t recommend the basic plans unless you have other forms of coverage.

Thanks for reading and happy traveling!

We do about 3 cruises per year and a couple overseas trips a year, plus all the little trips here and there in the US. It is nice to have one policy that covers it all. Like all insurance, you hope you never have to use it, but just glad we have it and alot cheaper than buying a policy for each trip.

I have been a regular subscriber to IAPA travel insurance for several years now. I am interested in having a comprehensive travel insurance that includes flight disaster.

Choose what suits your needs, single cover, family plan, ready to get started, frequently asked questions.

Without travel insurance, you run the risk of incurring some significant expenses that may take years to pay off.

If you’re travelling overseas, travel insurance is an important consideration for unexpected medical bills and hospitalisation. Other unforeseen expenses could include the replacement of lost or stolen luggage, delays or cancellations to your trip, and many other unfortunate scenarios.

We don’t cover medical expenses under our Domestic Travel Insurance policy. However, you may wish to take out insurance for domestic flight changes or cancellations, lost or stolen baggage, or rental vehicle excess. Refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for more information.

Travel insurance may cover you for a range of unexpected events that may affect your trip, such as emergency medical assistance if you become ill or injured while travelling overseas, including arranging your evacuation if needed.

Other incidents that travel insurance may cover include costs due to unexpected delays and cancellations, rental vehicle excess, and personal liability. You also have the option to purchase additional cover for activities such as adventure sports or skiing, although this isn’t available on all plans.

Cover limits vary from insurance provider to insurance provider, as do policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions, so it’s important to read the Product Disclosure Statement to make sure you fully understand what’s covered, the limits applying to the policy, and to make sure the policy is appropriate for your needs.

The length of your Travel Insurance policy is largely dependent on the travel dates you supply. When obtaining a quote, or buying a policy, you’ll be prompted to enter in your departure and return dates – this will be the period of cover for all benefits except the cancellation benefit, which begins from the date your policy is issued.

The period of cover is also shown on your Certificate of Insurance, which is sent to you at the time of purchase. You may want to extend the length of your holiday abroad (and therefore need an extension of your period of cover) and you may be able to do this within specified timeframes.

If you think you may travel more than once a year, you may wish to consider a Multi-Trip policy . Different start and end dates apply, refer to the Product Disclosure Statement for full details.

It’s up to you when you buy Allianz Travel Insurance, however, keep in mind these three things:

  • You can buy our Travel Insurance up to 12 months in advance.
  • You must buy Allianz Travel Insurance before you start your journey. Your journey starts when any traveller named on the Certificate of Insurance leaves home or work in Australia to begin travel.
  • Depending on the plan you choose you may have trip cancellation cover, which covers unexpected trip cancellation, rescheduling or shortening from the date your Certificate of Insurance is issued. So, consider buying our Travel Insurance as soon as you’ve booked and paid for some or all your trip as you may be covered for such events before you depart.

Yes, if you change your mind after you buy your Travel Insurance policy, you may cancel it within 14 days of your Certificate of Insurance being issued.

You’ll be given a full refund of the premium you’ve paid, provided you’ve not started your journey and don’t intend to make a claim or exercise any other right under your policy.

When considering which policy is right for you, make sure you consider your needs, as well as your financial situation. Reading the Product Disclosure Statement and Target Market Determination (TMD) is a good place to start as they will give you more detail, so you can decide if the plan is right for you.

Allianz Travel Insurance offers a number of travel insurance plans – Basic , Comprehensive , Domestic , Non-Medical or Multi-Trip Travel Insurance . You can see more detailed information on our Compare Cover Options page .
