The definitive top attraction in Amritsar is the Golden Temple, a two-story structure covered in real gold and surrounded by a 5.1-meter-deep manmade lake. But not merely a tourist site, this legendary religious shrine is one of the most sacred places in the world for Sikhs, many of whom make a pilgrimage to the temple at least once in their lifetimes.

To enter the Gurdwara complex, where the Golden Temple resides, you'll need to cover your hair, remove your shoes, and step through a small stream of running water to cleanse your feet. Then, you'll walk clockwise on the inlaid marble path that flanks the pool, as worshippers chant and bathe in the water.

Making your way to the glistening inner sanctum of the temple, where priests chant songs from the Guru Granth Sahib holy text, is just one of many things to do at the Golden Temple. This attraction is home to the world's largest community kitchen , welcoming anyone to sit on the floor and savor a free vegetarian meal with other visitors. It's mesmerizing to see hordes of volunteers chopping onions, peeling garlic, and cooking huge vats of lentils and roti for up to 100,000 diners every day.

A 31-kilometer drive west from the city center of Amritsar will take you to the border of Pakistan , where a curious border-closing ceremony takes place at sunset every afternoon. Full of pomp and circumstance, the Beating Retreat Ceremony involves an ostentatious display of goose-stepping guards from the Indian Border Security Force and the Pakistan Rangers saluting each other, lowering and folding their flags, and closing the gates at the border.

The experience gives tourists (typically seated in a special VIP section , once they flash their foreign passport) the chance to see the stark differences between Pakistan and India. On the Pakistan side, you'll see men and women sitting separately in stadium-style seating, and the vibe is much more subdued.

On the Indian side, however, it's a patriotic party. Bollywood music blasts from speakers as women dance in the street, while those in the stands wave Indian flags.

While just 45-minutes long, the entire ceremony gives you enough memories for hours of storytelling back at home.

The year 1947 was a big one for India. Not only was it the year that India gained its independence from Great Britain, it was also the year it split into the two different entities of India and Pakistan–an event known as the Partition of India.

Tourists in Amritsar can learn about this defining moment in history at the Partition Museum, the only institution in the world devoted entirely to Partition. It features a haunting collection of newspaper clippings, antique photographs, and oral histories with people who experienced the violence leading up to the separation of the two countries, and the resettling of refugees after the event. The experience will give you a deeper understanding of the source of rivalry between India and Pakistan.

On your way out of the museum, jot down a message on a green leaf and hang it on the Tree of Hope .

Punjabi cuisine has become known around the world for its spicy curries, pillowy breads, and tandoori-fired meats . If you're looking to indulge in this tradition of colorful feasts, there's no better place to do it than in Amritsar.

Bharawan Da Dhaba , located kitty-corner to the Partition Museum , whips up downright decadent Amritsari kulcha (mildly leavened flatbread) stuffed with Indian cheese or potatoes and served with spiced chickpeas.

Tear into the Punjabi breakfast staple of chole puri (puffy bread with chickpea curry) at Kanha Sweets , just a block away from the BBK DAV College for Women .

Dig into tandoori chicken from a decades-old recipe at the Beera Chicken House , across from the New Bhandari Hospital.

And if you've got a sweet tooth, treat yourself to piping-hot jalebi (deep-fried spirals of maida flour batter dunked in sugar syrup) at Gurdas Ram Jalebi Wala , a hole-in-the-wall sweets shop just 400 meters away from the Golden Temple.

The Mandir Mata Lal Devi is as bizarre as the Golden Temple is elegant. Legend has it that this Hindu temple, dedicated to the female saint Lal Devi, can boost the fertility of women who visit. But to non-devotees, the labyrinthine attraction resembles a funhouse.

You'll wander down dark, narrow passages that lead to garish rooms covered in mirrored mosaics , walk through the open mouths of funhouse-style animal carvings , see giant wooden cobras, and crawl through a watery cave to the shrine of Lal Devi .

The entire experience will give you a new perspective on Hinduism and the ways devotees practice their spirituality. It'll also prove to be one of the most fun things to do in Amritsar.

Tucked behind the Golden Temple, tourists will find another important site in Amritsar: Jallianwala Bagh. The public garden memorializes the estimated 1,500 people who were killed or injured when British soldiers were ordered to fire on peaceful protesters who were demanding the release of imprisoned leaders of the Indian Independence Movement in 1919. You can still see bullet holes in the walls that hundreds of victims hid behind in attempt to dodge the gunfire.

The memorial site's Martyrs' Gallery displays the portraits of important figures of Indian independence. You can also check out a humbling exhibition on the victims and see an eternal flame .

Often overshadowed by the neighboring Golden Temple, Baba Atal Tower is a worthwhile attraction in Amritsar in its own right. The structure is an architectural marvel, with nine octagonal stories stacked 40 meters high, making it one of the tallest structures in Amritsar.

Baba Atal Tower is dedicated to Atal Rai, the son of a Sikh guru. Legend has it that Atal Rai performed the miracle of bringing someone back from the dead, and then gave up his life in penance for the sin of interfering with God's work. The sightseeing opportunities from the top of the tower are some of the best in all of Amritsar.

Looking for a serene escape from the hectic streets of Amritsar? Head to Ram Bagh Gardens, a sprawling public park. The green space brims with rare plants , flowers, and trees, and features refreshing water features filled with goldfish. You'll also find statues throughout the gardens, including a memorial for Ranjit Singh , leader of the Sikh Empire in the early 1800s.

At the center of the park, tourists can check out the historic Summer Palace. While significantly less elaborate than other palaces you'll find throughout India, the two-story, red-stone building offers a sense of place, with scalloped doorways, inlaid marble floors, and pretty balconies.

In the northwest corner of Ram Bagh Gardens, tourists will discover another prominent attraction: the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum And Panorama . This institution contains a collection of important artifacts to Sikh culture, including garments worn by warriors, antique coins, and beautiful works of art. Its most famous exhibit, though, is a multimedia diorama that depicts Maharaja Ranjit Singh's early life and greatest battles. Sound effects of battle cries bring the diorama to life.

Architecture buffs, make a point to visit Khalsa College on Grand Trunk Road in Amritsar. The historic educational institution doubles as a premier example of 19th-century Indo-Saracenic architecture, a mash-up of Western European aesthetics with the exuberance of Indian and Persian styles.

With elegant onion domes and scalloped archways, Khalsa College's palatial main building is impressive and has served as the setting of many Bollywood films . Spend some time wandering the tranquil campus and gardens, but keep in mind that the academic and administrative buildings are reserved exclusively for students and staff–this is still a working university, after all.

More than 250 years old, the Gobindgarh Fort has become one of the most iconic symbols of Punjab. The heritage site hails from a time when the Indian subcontinent was divided into small principalities and ruled by kings. At one point, some 12,000 soldiers manned the fort to protect Amritsar from potential invaders.

In modern days, Gobindgarh Fort has transformed into an educational attraction dedicated to the history and culture of Amritsar. The complex contains four museums, including a Warfare Museum showcasing rare weapons, a Turban Museum explaining headgear from the region, and a Sikh Art Museum. Stick around after dark for the captivating light and sound shows projected on the fort's Colonial Bungalow.

Take one look at Shri Durgiana Mandir ( Durgiana Temple ), and you might think you're seeing double. With its half gold, half marble facade, the domed structure looks almost identical to the Golden Temple–it's even housed in the center of a sacred lake.

While the two temples may not differ much in looks, they certainly have distinctive purposes. Durgiana Temple is a Hindu religious site, where devotees pay tribute to warrior goddess Durga; wealth goddess Laksmi; and Vishnu, the protector of the universe. The attraction is mostly visited by religious travelers, but even everyday tourists will appreciate the magnificence of the inlaid marble and spiritual atmosphere of the temple.

On your way inside, pay attention to the exquisite silver doors , depicting holy figures. The distinctive feature is responsible for Durgiana Temple's nickname as the Silver Temple.

Another popular thing to do in Amritsar is visit the Sri Ram Tirath Temple. Located about 12 kilometers west of the city center, this Hindu temple honors the birthplace of Lava and Kusha, the twin brothers of the hero of the Ramayana epic, Rama, and his wife Sita.

The star attraction of this temple complex is its idol of Valmiki , author of the Ramayana. Standing eight feet tall and plated in roughly 800 kilograms of gold, it's a sight to behold. You can also see a sacred water tank , a congregational hall with capacity for 5,000 devotees, a library of Sanskrit texts, and an enlightening museum .

Hot tip: The best time to visit the Sri Ram Tirath Temple is roughly two weeks after Diwali, during the attraction's annual five-day festival. It draws around 100,000 pilgrims, who take ritualistic baths in the water tank and light special lamps handmade from flour and ghee.

Step through Gandhi Gate to get a heavy dose of retail therapy at Hall Bazaar–the go-to place for souvenirs in Amritsar. Located in the heart of the city between the Golden Temple and the Partition Museum, this attraction is thought to be one of India's oldest markets. Its streets contain thousands of shops selling jewelry, textiles, tailored suits, electronics, and practically anything else you can imagine–at bargain prices, to boot!

If you get hungry during your shopping trip, check out the food stalls scattered throughout the market. Bade Bhai ka Brothers Dhaba has become a popular spot for tourists to sample Punjabi cuisine in a thali (a platter comprised of many different dishes). You can also enjoy fish fried to perfection at Pehelwan Amritsari Fish Shop or succulent curried meats at Bheeri Gali wali Dukan .

While Amritsar is often associated with its Sikh residents, it's also home to Muslims, many of whom practice their religion at Khairuddin Mosque. Built by Muhammad Khairuddin roughly 150 years ago, this mosque is an impressive example of Islamic architecture. The stately green-and-white structure features three domes and four minarets, along with intricate artwork on its walls.

More than just a beautiful sight, Khairuddin Mosque is also an important historical attraction for its role in India's struggle for freedom. This is where Tootie-e-Hind, Shah Attaullah Bukhari, urged the Indian people to fight back against the British colonizers.

Amritsar Itinerary: What to Do in 1 or 2 Days (2024)

Amritsar is a great place to add to your Indian itinerary. Located in the state of Punjab, near the border with Pakistan, this is one of the best cultural destinations in India . Amritsar is also the most important city for Sikhs , and it’s famous for being home to the Golden Temple , one of India’s most important landmarks .

I visited Amritsar twice so far and have explored many places in this city. As I’m writing this, I’m actually sitting in one of Amritsar’s cafes, right next to the Partition Museum.

In this post, you will find the best places to visit in Amritsar in 1 or 2 days. While it is possible to see the city’s highlights in just 1 day if you’re in a hurry, 2 days will give you a better understanding of what this city is all about.

So, let’s dive right into it, here’s the perfect itinerary for Amritsar!

The Perfect Itinerary for 1 or 2 Days in Amritsar

Day 1: the highlights.

The first day of this itinerary for Amritsar includes the things you shouldn’t miss during a visit to this city. These are the absolute highlights.

It all depends on your personal pace and how much time you spend in each place, but one day should be enough to cover the following places.

1. Jallianwala Bagh

Jallianwala Bagh is one of the most interesting places to visit in Amritsar and one you shouldn’t miss when you’re visiting the so-called Golden City.

It commemorates the Jallianwala Massacre, also known as the Amritsar Massacre , which took place on this spot on the 13th of April 1919.

On that day, a peaceful crowd of 10,000 people gathered to protest against the Rowlatt Act, which was enforced by the British and allowed them to arrest people without a warrant.

Colonel Dryer then ordered about 50 soldiers to fire into the gathering without a warning, which led to 400 deaths and 1,200 wounded civilians.

This was a turning point that turned millions of moderate Indians into nationalists and it would eventually lead to India’s independence in 1947.

During a visit to Jallianwala Bagh, you will learn more about what happened on that day and you will see bullet holes from the massacre as well as a memorial that’s dedicated to the victims.

To me, this was one of the most interesting places to visit in Amritsar. I had never heard about this sad part of history before, so I learned a lot during my visit here.

2. Golden Temple

The Golden Temple is, without a doubt, the most famous monument in Amritsar and the main reason why so many people visit this city.

This temple is also known as the Harmandir Sahib and it’s the holiest gurudwara in Sikhism, making it the most important pilgrimage site for Sikhs .

There are quite some things to see at the Golden Temple complex. For example, one of the places you shouldn’t miss is the community kitchen (langar), which serves free food to approximately 100,000 people every single day . Everyone is welcome to eat here, regardless of religion, caste and colour.

Apart from the langar and the Golden Temple itself, you will also find other gurudwaras in the comlex. This is a pretty big site and I would set aside 1 to 2 hours to see everything.

If you can, it’s nice to visit the Golden Temple both during the daytime as well as in the evening, as it’s a completely different experience.

3. Partition Museum

As its name suggests, Amritsar’s Partition Museum tells the story of the partition of India, which took place in 1947. If you’re asking me, this is one of the most interesting museums in India!

India’s partition took place when British India was divided into two independent states – India and Pakistan (the latter also consisted of present-day Bangladesh , which used to be East Pakistan) – and it led to the largest mass migration in human history .

At the museum, you will learn more about the time before the partition, the independence movement, the demand for separate states, the partition and the consequences. What’s interesting is that this museum also focuses on the experience of the people who lived to tell.

All in all, the Partition Museum is a place you should add to your Amritsar itinerary if you would like to learn more about India’s history.

3. Jama Masjid Jaan Mohammed Mosque

This mosque is one of Amritsar’s hidden gems and it’s located right across the Partition Museum! Although it’s often skipped during a visit to Amritsar, I think it is worth checking out.

The Jama Masjid Jaan Mohammed Mosque was built in 1867 by Jaan Muhammad, who is believed to have fled to Pakistan during the partition (though he must have been very old by then). It used to be painted blue and red, but today, this mosque is white and green (one of the colours of Islam).

This is a place I loved visiting, it’s a beautiful monument and it’s a lot quieter than most other religious complexes in Amritsar.

4. Wagah Border Ceremony

Held at the Wagah Border, 30 km (18.6 mi) from Amritsar and 25 km (15.5 mi) from Lahore in Pakistan, the Wagah Border Ceremony is quite a spectacle.

This military parade is also called the “Beating Retreat Ceremony” and it’s held at the only open land border between India and Pakistan every evening. This has been the case since 1959.

As it’s very difficult for Indians and Pakistanis to cross the Wagah Border , there aren’t so many people doing so. Thousands of people gather here every evening to watch the ceremony, however.

During the ceremony, soldiers on both sides will parade and compete by raising their legs in the air as high as they can. The parade stands as a symbol of the rivalry between both countries and it aims to emphasize the countries’ cooperation and brotherhood at the same time.

The atmosphere is absolutely crazy during the parade, with Indians loudly cheering for their country. It was a bit too patriotic for me, to be honest, but it’s definitely worth attending as it’s an unforgettable, Indian travel bucket list experience .

Day 2: If you have more time

If you have 2 days on your Amritsar itinerary, some other places are worth visiting too. You will find these below.

1. Gobindgarh Fort

Gobindgarh Fort was built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the first maharaja of the Sikh empire, in the 18th century. Its main purpose was to protect Amritsar from invaders coming from the Grand Trunk Road.

From the mid-19th century until India’s independence in 1947, the fort was occupied by the British. It was later occupied by the Indian Army and it’s only been opened to tourists in 2017.

Apart from the fort itself, you can also visit a museum at the complex. This museum houses exhibitions of Sikh martial history as well as the treasury of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Although I passed in front of it, I decided to skip Gobindgarh Fort because I already visited tens of forts in Rajasthan . If you’re a history buff, however, or if you like visiting forts, this is a place you will love.

Note that this fort is located on military terrain and that you can’t take pictures with a DSLR here (phones are fine).

2. Shri Durgiana Temple

Located just a 10-minute walk from Gobindgarh Fort, the Shri Durgiana Temple is the most important Hindu pilgrimage site in Amritsar and it attracts thousands of visitors every day.

This temple was built at the beginning of the 20th century and what makes it so interesting is that, despite being a Hindu temple, it looks a lot like the Golden Temple of the Sikhs.

The Shri Durgiana Mandir is dedicated to the Goddess Durga, who is associated with motherhood, protection and strength.

Make sure to visit the temple itself and to see it from a distance as well while you’re here. This is a beautiful place that shouldn’t be missed on a 2-day Amritsar itinerary!

3. Khairuddin Mosque

The beautiful Khairuddin Mosque, also known as Jama Masjid, was built in by Muhammad Khairuddin in 1876, and it has an interesting history as it played a role in India’s quest for independence.

This is the place where Muslim intellectuals and political figures urged people to stand up against the British rule. It was also here that freedom fighter Shah Attaullah Bukhari declared war against the British in a proclamation.

Today, Khairuddin Mosque is a tranquil place in the middle of the city. I was the only one visiting it when I was there and it was nice to enjoy the peace and quiet for a while. I had the same feeling at the Jaan Mohammed Mosque (#3 on this list).

Another nice thing to do in Amritsar is to shop at its numerous bazaars. You may just find the perfect souvenir from India here!

Some of Amritsar’s most famous bazaars are Lahori Gate Market , Katra Jaimal Singh Bazaar and Hall Bazaar . You will find nearly anything here, from Punjabi juttis (shoes) and Indian saris to books, keychains and statues.

Don’t forget to haggle, though. Unfortunately, Indian shop keepers are notorious for charging foreigners 20 times the local price.

5. Golden Temple at night

Visiting the Golden Temple in the evening or at night is a completely different experience compared to during the daytime.

The temple lights up when it’s dark, which is a spectacular sight and seeing this a great way to spend your last evening in Amritsar.

So, if you have the time, I would recommend visiting this temple twice. It’s free to visit , after all, and it’s open 24/7 , so you don’t need to keep opening hours into account.

Best Time to Visit Amritsar

The best time to visit Amritsar is during winter, from November to March . This is when the weather will be at its best (13.5°C to 26.9 °C or 56.4°F to 80.4°F) and it won’t be too hot.

This being said, I visited Amritsar twice, once in January and once in March, and March was way better. It can get pretty cold in January, with average temperatures of 11.5°C (52.9°F), and Punjab tends to be quite misty around this time of the year. So, if you’re asking me, the months of November and March are the best .

Avoid summer (April to June) if you can, as it gets very hot (39.2 °C (102.6°F) during this season.

The monsoon season starts in July and ends in October and there will be a lot of rainfall at this time of the year. On top of that, it will be pretty hot and humid. It’s still better than the summer months but this is not the best time to visit Amritsar.

Where to Stay in Amritsar

There are plenty of hotels in Amritsar, it all depends on your personal taste and budget. You will find my top recommendations below.

•   FabHotel Rosewood Inn (⭐ 8.8, $):  Located near the train station, 3 km (1.7 mi) from the Golden Temple FabHotel Rosewood Inn is a good option if you’re on a budget. I stayed here for two nights the second time I visited Amritsar. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the staff is super friendly! The only downside is that it’s near the railway station and you have a bit of noise from passing trains, but this didn’t keep me from my sleep.
•  Hotel White (⭐ 8.2, $$): Hotel White is ideally located just a 5-minute walk from the Golden Temple. This hotel offers beautiful, clean rooms and it has an on-site restaurant too. It’s good to know that some rooms have a balcony too, but this is not the case for all of them.
• Taj Swarna   (⭐ 8.6, $$$):  If you’re looking for a luxurious stay in Amritsar, Taj Swarna is a great choice! This hotel is 5,5 km (3.4 mi) from the Golden Temple and it boasts magnificent rooms, an outdoor swimming pool and all the facilities you might need.

The museum was opened on 17th August 2017, marking the day as Partition Remembrance Day, as it was on 17th August 1947 that the actual boundaries of India and Pakistan were announced. The museum was housed in the historic Town Hall building, which was constructed in 1870 by architect John Gordon. The building used to house the court of small causes, city police headquarters, municipal offices, a free library, and a meeting room. A bustling city with an indomitable spirit, Amritsar holds one of the holiest of Sikh ethos at its heart - the Golden Temple. Covered in 400 kg of gold and surrounded by a serene sarovar (pond), one is immediately swamped by the humbling sight of the glistening structure, which is also home to one of the biggest community kitchens (langar) in the country that serves about 20,000 people a day.

From an array of dishes like butter-drenched paranthas (Indian flatbread), creamy lassi (a drink made of yoghurt), dahi-balla and aloo-tikki (deep-fried savouries), the city's food is rife with flavours and aromas. However, what makes travelling to the city truly unforgettable is the warmth of its people.

Amritsar gets its name from the holy tank called Amrit Sarovar, meaning pool of nectar, which surrounds the Golden Temple. Legend has it that the fourth guru of the Sikh faith, Guru Ram Das, founded the city around 1574 AD. It is said, Guru Amardas, the third Sikh guru, bought a piece of land, amid thick forests, to build a tank. But he died before it could be built. Folklore says Guru Ram Das invited 52 traders from nearby places to settle. They built 32 shops, which still exist in Amritsar, and are popularly known as Batisi Hatta. The construction for Amrit Sarovar was completed by his successor Guru Arjan Dev. Interestingly, Amritsar also finds a mention in the Hindu epic, Ramayana, as the place where Lord Rama and Goddess Sita's twin sons, Luv and Kush, were born. Amritsar was further developed by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, founder and king (1801–39) of the erstwhile kingdom of Punjab.

Amritsar is a must-visit city if you’re interested in honouring or just learning about Sikhism. This city in Punjab, which neighbours Pakistan, is considered the spiritual and cultural centre for this religion. In 1577, the fourth Sikh guru Ram Das founded the city, which is bisected by railway lines today. Here’s our pick of the top places to visit in Amritsar.

Partition museum.

Amritsar’s moving Partition Museum tells the story of the largest migration in human history. In 1947, the British divided the nation into two countries, India and Pakistan, displacing up to 20m people. More than a million people died from disease, massacres and famine, while many more lost everything they owned. The museum showcases newspaper clippings, photos and artefacts belonging to Partition survivors, along with stirring artwork and audiovisual stations that bring this torrid history to life.

Bharawan da Dhaba

You can’t come to Amritsar without dining at its most famous restaurant, Bharawan da Dhaba. The eatery has been a city staple since 1912 when it served up rich, buttery Punjabi dishes from a tent, and today, it’s still a family affair, with the original owner’s descendants running it. The restaurant, just 10 minutes from the sacred Golden Temple, serves only pure vegetarian food to reflect traditional Sikh values. Try the popular thalis, which feature channa, paneer and naan, followed by delicious cardamom-flavoured rice pudding.

Brothers Dhaba

Can’t get a seat at Bharawan da Dhaba? Head next door to another branch of the famous restaurant, run by the family’s eldest brother. You can expect all the Punjabi favourites served at the original restaurant, including parathas stuffed with herby potato, wafer-thin dosas and lassis. There’s also a sprinkling of western additions to the menu, and if you come for breakfast, opt for a special platter featuring curried potato and deep-fried kulcha (leavened flatbread).

Mata Lal Devi Temple

There’s no shortage of colourful Hindu temples in Amritsar, but Mata Lal Devi, in the Rani Ka Bagh area, definitely stands out from the crowd. Modelled on the Vaishno Devi cave temple, you’ll find a series of shrines and grottos mixed with mirrored mosaic walls and deity statues. At one point, you even pass through a lion’s mouth and exit through a snake’s head. Women from all over India come here to pray to the female saint Lal Devi for fertility.

Wagah Border Crossing

Wagah, known as the “Berlin Wall of Asia”, sits on the Grand Trunk Road, marking the dividing line between Pakistan and India. A retreat ceremony, the “lowering of the flags”, has taken place here every single evening since 1959 and is witnessed by hundreds of people every day on both sides of the border. It’s free to watch and starts 30 minutes before sunset. The Border Security Force (BSF) jawans (officers) encourage women and children to wave the national flag, run towards the gates and dance to lively Bollywood songs.

Hall Bazaar

Off Hall Road, the Hall Bazaar is the busiest shopping centre in Amritsar. This one-stop shopping destination stocks a wide range of products, including electronics, books, handicrafts, home decor and clothing. Many people visit to buy quality woollen items, too, such as carpets, blankets and shawls. You’ll also find great accessories here, including wooden bangles and fine silver jewellery. Hungry? Golden Temple

You haven’t seen the soul of Amritsar until you’ve visited the Golden Temple – the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion. Known to Sikhs as Harmandir Sahib or Darbar Sahib, the gurdwara is part of a larger complex. The Guru Granth Sahib (holy book of Sikhs) is taken to the temple every morning and returned to the Akal Takht, also in the complex, at night. Make sure you remove your shoes on entry and bring a suitable head covering.

Jallianwala Bagh

On 13 April 1919, British troops, on General Dyer’s order, opened fire on a group of innocent Indians participating in a meeting at the Bagh, killing hundreds. As you walk the narrow passage leading to the Jallianwala Bagh, the first thing you’ll notice is an inscription on a stone plaque: “People were fired at from here.” This park is now a memorial for those who sacrificed their lives, with bullet holes marked for visitors to observe.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum

Sitting within a beautiful garden known as the Ram Bagh, this museum was once the summer palace of the first king of the Sikh Empire, Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Today, the museum holds a fascinating exhibit of arms, armour, old coins and manuscripts – items that relate to the king – while the paintings lining the galleries highlight his court and camp, giving insight into the palace’s history.

Central Sikh Museum

The Central Sikh Museum preserves the horrifying history of the Sikhs’ martyrdom at the hands of the Mughals, the British and Operation Bluestar. Established in 1958, the gallery houses a collection of portraits, including Sikh gurus, saints, warriors and prominent leaders, coins, arms and ancient manuscripts. You’ll also find a library.

About 11km (7mi) west of Amritsar is Ram Tirath, an ancient pilgrimage site associated with the period of Rāmāyana . It’s believed to be where Lord Rama and Sita’s twins, Luv and Kush, were born and where Valmiki wrote the epic Rāmāyana – the poet’s old hut is still on the grounds. This sacred site also features a well believed to have been dug by the Hindu god Hanuman, a devotee of Rama.

Amritsar is a popular travel destination in Northern India attracting tourists from all over the world. Among one of the largest cities of Punjab , Amritsar captures the heart of many with its spirituality, dignified history, cuisine, and narrow marketplaces. So I’m going to present the top things to do and best places to visit in Amritsar and around. Hop on to my Amritsar sightseeing trip .

Amritsar Itinerary – Best Places to visit in Amristar

Amritsar is an astonishing place that will tickle your senses. The chaos of the old city, the tranquillity in the Golden Temple, the past of the horrific mass murder in the Jalliawallah Bagh and a wonderful ceremony at Indo-Pak border, Amritsar can be overwhelming. So, I have put together this Amritsar itinerary for you to have an amazing sightseeing trip with the best places to visit in Amritsar. 

Amritsar Sightseeing: Best Places to visit in Amritsar

Golden temple.

There are a number of sites to visit in Punjab but *Harmandir Sahib*  is one of the best places to visit in Amritsar city. The city is home to the well-known Sikh Shrine “The Golden Temple” or colloquially known as “Sri Harmandir Sahib”. The temple is built from pure gold and exquisite marble work is visible in and around the temple. The Golden Temple is surrounded by a large holy lake containing “Amrit” or the “holy water”  fed from the Ravi river.

Palki  Sahib Ceremony

The symbolic ceremony – “Palki  Sahib Ceremony” –  takes place twice a day, when the holy book “Guru Granth Sahib” carried by Palki Sahib (palanquins) is departed to the Akal Takhat Sahib. Then, the devotees and the Gurudwara staff clean the Harmandir Sahib. During this time, the devotees sing the Gurbani Kirtan (devotional tunes). After this purification, rugs are spread back & Peera Sahib(small cot) is kept where the Guru Granth Sahib is placed back early morning. It is a religious ceremony, not to be missed while visiting the Golden Temple and I would highly recommend as one of the best things to do in Amritsar at night. 

An Unforgettable Experience

I would like to share one of the most wonderful experiences from my last visit to The Golden Temple: 

“I and my cousins decided to visit The Golden Temple at night, around 8:45 PM. As we were staying nearby, we reached the temple around 9:00 PM. The moment we entered the temple, all those who were inside the temple had to sit down by the gurudwara staff for the “ Palki Sahib Ceremony “. We sat there for a good fifteen minutes and the experience was unforgettable. The devotees sang devotional and melodious tunes. I closed my eyes trying to make the connection with The Almighty and immediately felt the positive vibes. I sensed I could speak my heart out to God, share my joys and cry out my problems. I bowed down to offer my prayers and departed towards the lake. The tears in my eyes, when we exited the temple, were a memorable experience which I’ll always cherish.”

For all those planning to visit the temple, I would suggest going in night (around 8:30 PM in winter and 9:30 PM in summer) so you might also be to attend the ceremony. I am sure you will not regret including the Golden Temple in your Amritsar sightseeing trip. 

Jallianwala Bagh

This is one of the most heart-shattering places to visit in Amritsar associated with the massacre which happened here under British rule in 1919.  It is a memorial set up in 1951 for the innocent & unarmed people who died at the hands of the British Indian army. Shockingly they were not freedom fighters or protestors, they were peacefully celebrating the Baisakhi festival. Jallianwala Bagh (garden) can be an emotional visit for those who still feel connected to history. To connect with an important landmark in the Indian freedom movement, Jallianwala Bagh should be on your list of the best places to visit in Amritsar. 

Partition Museum

The first partition museum opened in India in the Holy City of Amritsar on 17 Aug 2017. The one and only museum dedicated to the history of the Partition between India & Pakistan should be one of the best places to visit in Amritsar.  Located in the town hall, the museum brings back so many chilling memories from the era. Entry to the museum is available at as low as 10₹ or 150₹ (2.16$) for foreigners. I’d recommend taking a trip to this museum for going down memory lane, how India used to be before & during Pakistan. This is a new addition to the Amritsar sightseeing places, and highly recommended. 

Wagah Border

Amritsar is a magnificent town placed on the near India-Pakistan border, also known as the “Wagga Border”. Sightseeing in Amritsar is not limited to Harmandir Sahib, the Wagga border is another major tourist attraction and is one of the must-see places to visit in Amritsar.

The “ Beating Retreat ” or the “lowering of the flags” ceremony is jointly followed by India & Pakistan and is well-known as a symbol of cooperation between the two nations. Wagah is at the Indo-Pak border and located 20 km from Amritsar and a taxi will take about 45 minutes from Amritsar to Wagah Border. While visiting the city, make sure to squeeze the Beating Retreat ceremony into your Amritsar itinerary as this charts my list of Amritsar sightseeing places.  

War Memorial Amritsar (Or Punjab State War Heroes Amritsar)

Punjab is ubiquitously known as a land of warriors and it has contributed to numerous wars since 300 BCE. Punjab’s government came up with an initiative for setting up a memorial starting from that era.  The memorial is located slightly outside of the main town and can be reached through a cab or hop on hop off buses. The total visit to the war memorial won’t take more than 3-4 hours.

The memorial has 8 galleries starting from the origin of Sikhism and up until till Kargil War (wasn’t opened the last time I visited). The galleries are interactive and have real-life look-alike wax statues. The constant audio in each gallery helps to understand the context of art at display more. 

There’s also one arcade just before the entry of the galleries flaunting a 45 meters high sword. Check out my Instagram stories for more pictures from my recent visit to the memorial. 

Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum

Maharaja Ranjit Singh is the most fierce ruler from Punjab whose revolt during British rule is well known. Every other state was under colonial rule except Punjab and Lahore which he acquired in 1799. The summer palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh is now a heritage museum under the Punjab government. With a collection of cherished paintings and numerous pieces of armour, the museum is another one of the best places to visit in Amritsar.

Amritsar itinerary – things to do in amritsar, things to do in amritsar, try amritsari cuisine.

The cuisine of the town is popular among food lovers which will tempt you to return to the city again and again. One of the distinguished dishes is the “Aloo Kulcha”   which is a popular Punjabi fat bread prepared using potato stuffing. The dish is usually served with white peas curry (‘chole’) and tamarind water (‘khatta’) and is known for its irresistible flavour. It is said that the authentic Kulchas from Amritsar don’t taste the same if cooked anywhere but Amritsar. So I highly recommend having a plate of Kulchas while in the city.

The trip to the Amritsar will be a delight for all the foodies with a variety of delicacies including Kachoris, Naan, Chur Chur Naan, Lassi, Mithais, Chole Bathurey and many more. 

Shopping in Amritsar’s old markets

Surrounded by twelve historic gates, the old town of Amritsar holds its grace. While wandering around the city, we encounter brightly lit, crowded and narrow markets. Shopping in Amritsar is surely not be missed. There are various things to buy in Amritsar including numerous fabrics and footwear ( ‘juttis’ ) and one can easily locate them in the markets. Fancy some boutiques or known brands head to Lawrence Road – which is a posh market for the locals. You’ll also find a variety of eateries there. 

The lanes going towards the Golden Temple are now being restored to give the place a vibe of the city centre . The lanes are restored beautifully and are given a more historic architectural theme and a more cultural vibe has also been introduced. 

This newly renovated Golden Temple road ends somewhere in town hall and goes towards Hall Bazaar which locals use extensively for shopping.

Where to Stay in Amritsar

Although there are a number of hotels in Amritsar, yet I would recommend staying near the Golden Temple. A lot of homes are being converted to hotels now, so you’ll easily find any number of hotels there. Airbnb has not taken a flight there, so hotels are your best buy. Coming from a family settled in Amritsar, I can recommend Sharma Guest House which is a renowned name near Golden Temple for 45 years.

Treebo Trip MM Paradise – At the backside of Golden Temple and a Treebo brand makes it a perfect hotel. Golden Temple is only 4 minutes away, and you’ll be able to experience the hustle and bustle of daily life here. 

CSJS Inn By Krishna Group of Hotels – A 4-star hotel minutes away from the Golden Temple and Jallianwalah Bagh. Located near Akal Takht, this should be your pick if you’d like to indulge in luxury.

Ramada Amritsar – One of the best hotels to stay in Amritsar located right in the city.

Where to eat.

Amritsar is a foodie ‘s paradise and every corner of Amritsar city will present you with something unique and a variety of places to eat. A number of renowned brands have come up in Amritsar including Mc Donalds, Burger King, Domino’s Pizza, Pizza Hut and many others. All these are located in close proximity to Golden Temple and you wouldn’t have to go searching. But I will recommend trying local restaurants like Bharawan da Dhaba – located right at the beginning of the new Golden Temple road. If one relishes Indian non-vegetarian food, they will have to look a little farther from Golden Temple as there are no non-vegetarian restaurants near the same. I will suggest Kesar Da Dhaba, Punjabi Dhaba near Hall Bazaar and you’ll also find some near the Ramada Hotel. 

How to reach Amritsar

Amritsar is well connected through Buses, trains, and flights. Amritsar is 500 km from Delhi and depending on the medium you choose, the time will vary from 3 hours to 10 hours. Travelling in India isn’t easy but with the right medium, the journey can suit your needs. 

If going by road, you may either hire a cab from Delhi which will take 8-9 hours. If opting for buses, I would vouch for the Volvo buses from Punjab Roadways . Volvos are the most convenient buses available in chair cars (with recliners), or sleeper ones. Taking an overnight bus to Amritsar will save your day and they will take right to the Amritsar bus stand in 9-10 hours.

If you love train travel, I will strongly recommend the premium Shatabdi trains – completely AC with Chair car and First Class options – they are the fastest trains available till Amritsar. Don’t opt for any other trains, they have a reputation for getting late which can ruin your plans.

Amritsar also has an international airport which is well connected through domestic & international airlines. If going via Delhi, the normal airtime will not be more than 30-45 mins which will be very useful if you plan to visit Amritsar in a day. Amritsar airport is slightly out of the town, with hotels also available nearby and a taxi will take a max of 25-30 mins to take you to town.

Fly Low Cost to Save Time + Money –

I have recently taken an early morning low-carrier Indigo flight from Delhi to Amritsar, which saved my entire day. Low-cost airlines leave from Terminal 1 of Delhi Airport and it’s a misconception that there are no/very few night flights from the 1D terminal, unlike the international T3 terminal. Sought by this misconception, I also reached the domestic airport by midnight which actually surprised me when I found it difficult to find a sleeper seat to sleep in there. So, you’ll not be alone if you wish to crash into the domestic 1D airport and it’s completely safe. Even the shops at the airport open near 3:30 AM, so you can soothe your shopping buds as well in case you’re unable to sleep. 

How to Travel in the Amritsar City

Amritsar is an old town with narrow alleys almost everywhere. So, commuting within the city can be troublesome for some. Ola rather than Uber is a preferred medium if you have to go a longer distance.  Trikshaws are the best way to go around the city, and they understand basic Hindi or English. There’s another concept of shared auto-Rikshaws where you’ll share the space with another 5-6 odd people, & so I’ll not recommend if you’re not from India . With the recent changes in the infrastructure there, you can also walk around Golden Temple, Jalliawallah Bagh, or Hall Bazaar.

Its almost been a decade since I went to Amritsar. Its just gorgeous indeed. Esp to have food at the Golden Temple is just a divine experience. I missed visiting the Wagah Border though.

Golden temple definitely is a major reason why we would want to visit Amritsar and would definitely not miss the Palki Sahib Ceremony. Though these are the top things to do in the city of Amritsar we would definitely not leave without a visit to the historic Jallianwala Bagh which we believe is a way to pay respect to the ones who lost their lives here.

Oh! I can so much relate to your post. I have been to each of these places – Golden temple and Wagah border being my favorite. Loved your photographs, they bring all my memories back.

Amritsar is always on my wishlist due to Golden Temple. I will make sure to follow ypur tips to attend Palki Ceremony about visiting hours. Wagah border would also be another attraction for me. Amritsari kulcha are my favorite.

I have not visited Amritsar or Punjab but looks so mesmerizing. Beautiful pictures I really want to visit India soon. Must start saving a lot. This would be a dream come true.

I have fond memories of Amritsar. The Golden Temple makes you quiet. The last time I was there I sat there in silence for an hour. The Jaiiawala Bagh made me quiet too, for obvious reasons. Wagah Border was fun though!

The city of Amritsar is set around the majestic Golden Temple, the world’s most important pilgrimage site for Sikhs. But that’s not all: there are plenty of other things to do in Amristar. I’ll run through the best of them in this Amritsar travel guide.

Amristar travel guide

There’s no denying that Amritsar is crazy and hectic. I guess it all depends where you’re at in your India journey. For me, fresh off the plane and about to embark on my solo travels in India , I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed. But if you’ve been in India a while, Amritsar might not even phase you!

Located in the state of Punjab, Amritsar has a mere 2.5 million people: a small city by Indian standards! It felt like all of them were swerving around me in tuk-tuks, looking intently and asking for selfies. The city centre feels open and modern but it only takes a few turns to feel totally off-grid in a maze of muddy, noisy alleyways. Due to the local vibe with lots of cheap eateries (plus the free entry and food at the Golden Temple), Amritsar was one of the cheapest places for backpacking in India .

A quick history of Amritsar

Before we explore the many things to do in Amristar, let’s touch upon the city’s rich history. Over 500 years ago, the land Amristar is built upon was bought for 700 rupees. Bargain! Guru Amar Das, the fourth Sikh guru, constructed Amritsar around a man-made pool that was to become the Golden Temple. For many years, it was a wealthy city known for music, arts, performance and philosophy, perched at an optimum location for trade. Sadly when the British came to rule, Amritsar was drained of its rich assets. The city crumbled like many in India. Other events that have shaped Amritsar’s history include the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre where the British shot dead hundreds of innocent civilians, and Operation Blue Star, the standoff between the governments and militant Sikhs inside the Golden Temple. The government killed 83 Sikhs and the prime minister was subsequently assassinated by her two Sikh bodyguards. A bloody history, to say the least!

Getting to Amritsar

Air: I arrived in Amritsar by air from Thailand. While most people arrive into India via Delhi, if you’re in Asia already, Amritsar is a good starting point. I use Skyscanner to book flights, searching by whole month to see the cheapest dates to travel. Search for flights to Amristar . Book your airport to city transfer in advance . Train: Amritsar Junction station will connect you by train to other cities including Delhi with 7 hours. Bus: From Amritsar, you’re well connected to the mountainous area of Dharmshala where lots of people go next.

Things to do in Amritsar

Rather than hundreds of activities, there are just a few main things to do in Amritsar. None were remotely similar to things I’ve done elsewhere so it was a memorable trip for me, even if I didn’t particularly love the city itself. Starting with the most obvious one, these are my top things to do in Amritsar…

The Golden Temple

As the world’s most important Sikh pilgrimage site, you can expect the Golden Temple to be busy. There are signs telling you not to take photos but, to be honest, everyone is! The one place you really can’t take photos is inside the Golden Temple itself but, depending on the length of the queue, you might not even go inside. I did during a rainy evening when the line was relatively short but usually it’s 1-2 hours long! It was very atmospheric inside with lots of decadent details and locals at worship, but it really depends how long you’re prepared to wait. Visiting the Golden Temple is free. You have to remove your shoes and don a headscarf which can be borrowed at the entrance.

Eat at the Golden Temple Kitchen

A weird and wonderful experience in Amritsar is dining at the world’s biggest community kitchen which feeds 100,000 people a day. This is known as a langar to Sikhs. I loved this experience because it was so unique: we sat cross-legged on the floor with a delicious dinner and hundreds of locals doing the exact same thing. If you don’t know, caring for others is a big part of the Sikh religion. Community kitchens are a common theme in temples around the world. You won’t pay a penny for this meal which I think is so amazing and hospitable. You’re presented with an empty tray and servers come around to dole out scoops of dahl, curd and chapatis. I loved the efficiency of it all, including the water machines that pour into your cup without the staff having to bend down! Food is available all day in the Golden Temple dining hall, so just arrive and make your way over there.

Volunteering at the Golden Temple

One of the most interesting things to do in Amritsar is volunteer at the Golden Temple Kitchen. Here, you’ll help chefs prepare the food in bulk. I’d suggest doing this as part of a tour because your guide will know the chefs personally and help you get the best of the hectic environment. I booked a tour with Incredible Amritsar and sadly had to cancel when I came down with food poisoning. It would have been awesome to stir the giant dahl pot and see hundreds of chapatis flipped by the industrial-sized dough machine. Next time!

The Golden Temple evening ceremony

If you get the chance to visit the Golden Temple at night, I’d highly recommend it. While the daytime is better for photo opportunities, the evening is more atmospheric. Every night at 9.30pm, the Palki Sahib ceremony sees the Sikh holy book, Guru Granth Sahib, get put to bed inside the temple. Temple guards carry it there while music plays and a crowd gathers, so it’s an interesting ceremony to see. I’d suggest arriving at the Golden Temple around 8pm. Eat a meal in the kitchen, then wait for the show afterwards. To learn from a local guide, take an evening temple guided walk .

The Wagah Border Show

Despite the first four items in this blog being about the Golden Temple, there’s one other very cool thing to do in Amritsar. Every day at 4.15pm in the winter and 5.15pm in the summer, the border between India and Pakistan hosts a colourful, competitive dance show. Hundreds visit to cheer for India each day, and you’ll glimpse people supporting Pakistan on the other side of the border. Attending the Wagah Border show was one of the most exciting and random experiences I’ve ever had travelling. And that includes the time I watched a dance show in a Filipino jail then played badminton with the convicts! Everyone was in great spirits and the high-energy dance show was just amazing. Expect elaborate costumes and some impressive high kicks.

Our show begun with an energetic march and dance party from a hundred young patriotic Indian girls. We got up out of our seats and joined them! I visited the Wagah Border, which is an hour’s drive from Amritsar, as a tour with my hostel. However, it’s easy to visit by taxi or tuk-tuk. Every day in the central square, guides will hassle you with trips to the show, charging around 1,000 rupees per vehicle. Try and split the ride with other travellers if you can, especially because it’s more fun in a group. The show is free to watch.

Jalliawala Bagh Memorial Park

Not all the things to do in Amritsar are upbeat, as you’ll find out at Jallianwala Bagh. This memorial in the heart of Amritsar is dedicated to the hundreds of Indians who were brutally massacred at the hands of the British, all for holding a peaceful protest. My blood boils to think about this. Indians come from far and wide to pay their respects at Jallianwala Bagh so it’s an important thing to do in Amritsar. If you’re British, you will feel no hate or judgement here, only sadness. An elderly man, who must have been a boy when it happened, didn’t miss a beat when I told him where I was from. He smiled and welcomed me to his country.

The Partition Museum

After seeing the Jallianwalla Bagh Massacre Monument, I knew I had to go to the Partition Museum, however hard it might be. If you don’t know about Partition, it’s not your fault. Our ancestors swept it under the rug on purpose but let me tell you, you need to know about this. Here’s a quick summary:

• Britain ruled India for 100 years, draining 167 million USD from the economy, using it to extend their empire and forcing Indians to live on 2.5 cents a day. Eight million Indians died of famine
• The British used divide and rule tactics to separate Muslim and Hindus therefore reducing the threat of united rebellion
• The people of India were desperate for the British to leave and launched the Quit India movement
• On their exit, the British split India and Pakistan, knowing that relationships between Muslims and Hindus were stretched beyond repair, intending Pakistan to be a homeland for Muslims
• The nation woke up to find new borders had been drawn up and 15 million people were displaced as a result
• Partition was the largest migration in human history, fraught with violence. One million Indians died and most people today cannot track their ancestors as a result.

Heartbreaking as it was, I’m grateful I got to learn about the history of Amritsar at this memorable museum. Entrance is 250 rupees for foreigners. If you wish to understand more, book a guided tour ($13) .

Shopping & wandering the central square

As I mentioned earlier, the outer streets of Amritsar are busy, hectic and overwhelming. However, the central square near the Golden Temple feels modern and well-organised. It’s a nice place to wander with some impressive architecture. You can get some total bargains while shopping, especially with these gorgeous shoes which are famously from Punjab. There are also lots of stalls selling kulfi (milky frozen yoghurt) and lassis.

Take a village tour

Before I’d even got off the plane in Amritsar, my seatmate had encouraged me to visit the surrounding villages and even invited me to his house! While the latter wasn’t on my itinerary as a solo female traveller, I have no doubt he was being genuinely hospitable. While I didn’t make it to the villages in the end, I hear they’re very scenic. The state of Punjab is known as a friendly and safe place, though I would recommend travelling with a reputable tour agency. Your accommodation can likely arrange a village tour for you, otherwise you can visit any tourist agency in the city centre.

Where to eat in Amritsar

No Amristar travel guide would be complete without the best foodie finds. Amritsar is sometimes referred to as the ‘secret foodie capital of India’ although whether this is just by the patriotic locals I’m not sure. Still, there’s no denying that the food in Amritsar is seriously good. I hadn’t had a real Indian meal since my last trip 3.5 years ago so you can guarantee I was loving it… Until I got sick! All the places I ate were fantastic – very popular and busy – so I don’t know if my sickness even came from something I ate or perhaps some bacteria or water I came into contact with elsewhere. It’s just impossible to know! I still want to share my foodie finds with you as I don’t think any of these listed were the cause. But as usual, use your own judgement, too – it’s all too easy to get sick in India.

Best food in Amritsar: A famous ‘kulcha’ breakfast – this thick bread dish is a bit like naan and served with butter, chickpeas and other flavoursome dips. Eat it at Bhai Kulwant Singh Kulchian Wale for 80 rupees including chai. Kesar De Dhaba – the most famous Punjab restaurant in Amritsar, hidden down a local alleyway. Order the palak paneer! Gurdas Ram Jalebi Wala – if you don’t know it already, jalebi is a deep fried dough dessert served in sticky syrup. This street vendor is renowned after serving it for many years. The world’s only vegetarian McDonalds – a random one but interesting nonetheless. You can find this restaurant in the main square.

How long to spend in Amritsar?

Honestly, you don’t need too long. You could see the Golden Temple in the morning and visit the Wagah Border in the afternoon, packing all the highlights into just one day. If you plan to wander, try a lot of local food or go on a village tour/food tour/walking tour, you could easily spend longer. I enjoyed seeing the Golden Temple during both daytime and nighttime, so I’d recommend allowing enough time to do both. The 9.30pm performance of putting the book to bed will clash with the Wagah Border show so you’ll need two different days. Around three days is probably optimum.

Suggested itinerary

Day 1: Visit the Golden Temple in the day and head to the Wagah Border in the afternoon (4.15pm in winter and 5.15pm in summer). Day 2: Do some shopping or visit the Partition Museum. See the Golden Temple at night or consider volunteering there. Day 3: Take a village tour, food tour or anything else you fancy. If you’re heading to Dharamsala next as I did, you could catch the 6pm bus at the end of day 3.

1. The Golden Temple

Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru, began the construction of this Gurdwara in the 16th century. Hazrat Mian Mir, a revered Muslim saint, laid its foundation stone, symbolizing inclusivity and unity. Guru Arjan Dev, who succeeded Guru Ram Das, completed the construction in 1604 A.D. and later undertook extensive renovations and expansions, ensuring the Gurdwara’s continued significance.

The temple’s golden dome glistens under the sun, reflected in the surrounding Amrit Sarovar, a sacred pool believed to have healing powers. The Golden Temple is not just a spiritual center but also a beacon of peace and humility, serving free meals to thousands of visitors daily. This is one of the best places to visit in Amritsar.

2. Jallianwala Bagh

Visiting Jallianwala Bagh serves as a powerful reminder of India’s fight for independence. This public garden is notorious for the 1919 massacre, General Dyer, along with his armed troops, fired upon a peaceful gathering led by Shri Guru Gobind Singh, resulting in hundreds of deaths on 13th April 1919. The horrific incident of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre still lingers in the hearts of millions of Indians, even after 100 years. This massacre marked a pivotal moment in Indian history, sparking numerous Satyagraha movements.

3. Wagah Border

Closing the borders of both countries and lowering the flags by the military of both countries is done here. Located close to the Attari Village, Wagah Border is a major crossing between India and Pakistan. It is known for its high-spirited ‘Lowering of Flags’ ceremony which is the major attraction of this place. This ceremony is also known as Beating Retreat at the international level. One of the most exciting activities in Amritsar for tourists is watching the Wagah Border Parade.

The Wagah Border, often referred to as the Berlin Wall of Asia, lies on the Grand Trunk Road, 23 km from Lahore and 28 km from Amritsar. The Beating Retreat Ceremony, initiated in 1959 through an agreement between the governments of India and Pakistan, takes place every evening. This ceremony signifies the official closing of the border and the lowering of the flags of both countries.

Timings: The parade starts at 5:15 PM while during winter it starts at 4:15 PM. The ceremony lasts for 45 minutes.

The Wagah Attari border entrance is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

4. Partition Museum

5. Durgiana Temple

Durgiana Temple is also known as Laxmi Narayan Temple. Along with the idol of Goddess Durga, idols of Goddess Laxmi, and Lord Vishnu, are also worshipped here. The temple’s history dates back to the year 1921 when its construction was initiated by Guru Harsai Mal Kapoor. 

This Temple underwent some reconstruction in 2013. The major festival in India , Amritsar is celebrated here. Visiting the beautiful temple and taking the blessing of goddess Durga is one best things to do in Amritsar.

6. Gobindgarh Fort

Following Independence, Gobindgarh Fort was under the control of the Indian Army until 2006. Recognizing its historical significance, the Indian Government transferred the fort to the Punjab Government for restoration. Now designated as a historical monument, Gobindgarh Fort in Amritsar is open to the public. 

Today, it is a vibrant cultural hub that offers various live shows, including the 7-D “Sher-e-Punjab” show on Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the “Kanda Boldiyan Ne” light and sound show, and the “Spirit of Punjab” live performance. The fort’s dynamic atmosphere makes it one of the top Amritsar local sightseeing spots.

7. Hall Bazaar

Hall Bazaar is one of the oldest marketplaces in Amritsar, located just 1 km from the railway station and 1.3 km from the Golden Temple. This historical market is renowned for offering world-famous Phulkari embroidery and Amritsari juttis, among various other items. 

Besides its vibrant shopping scene, Hall Bazaar is celebrated for its exquisite old architecture, featuring the Mughal archway entrance known as Gandhi Gate, which boasts a giant clock and the inscription ‘Amritsar – Sifti Da Ghar’ It is the best photographic place in the world . The market also hosts some of the city’s best restaurants and food stalls, serving delicious Punjabi cuisine.

8. Ram Tirath Temple

The temple complex features a sacred tank, ancient hutments, and a towering statue of Lord Hanuman. The spiritual significance and historical relevance make it a key addition to the list of Amritsar beautiful places. It is believed to be the ashram of Sage Valmiki, where Mata Sita stayed and gave birth to Luv and Kush. 9. Tarn Taran Sahib

10. Mata Lal Devi Temple

Born on February 21, 1923, in Lahore, Punjab (now in Pakistan), Lal Devi was the fourth daughter in her family. After her birth, the family visited the Chintpurni Temple in Himachal Pradesh. It is believed that upon entering the temple, Mata Ji was enlightened with the holy spirit of the deity Chintpurni. The temple priest predicted that she possessed divine powers, and her family soon regarded her as a saintly figure after witnessing numerous miracles attributed to her.

Following the partition, Mata Lal Devi chose Amritsar as her new home. Devotees believe that their wishes and prayers are fulfilled if they visit the temple with sincere faith. The temple is particularly known to help women facing difficulties in getting married or bearing children.

This Hindu temple is known for its mirrored hallways and labyrinthine passages, creating a mystical and enchanting atmosphere. It is a popular site among pilgrims and tourists, adding diversity to the list of Amritsar’s best places for tourists.

9 Of The Best Places To Visit In Amritsar

The culture-rich city is warm and welcoming. Find out what Amritsar has to offer.

Amritsar is known for its serene and religious atmosphere. Although the city was founded by the fourth Sikh guru, Amar Das, its cultural heritage extends beyond Sikhism. There are many places to visit in Amritsar, and none of them treat you like a stranger. It always feels like you belong to Amritsar no matter who you are. The city is of course home to the Golden Temple, the holiest shrine for Sikhs. There are many more gurdwaras and temples here, like the Gurdwara Sri Tarn Taran Sahib, Baba Atal Tower, and Mata Lal Devi temple. It is also believed that no one in the city goes to sleep hungry because of the langars in the gurudwaras that provide free food to people, regardless of their religion.  

Best Places To Visit In Amritsar

1. amritsar’s most visited place: the golden temple.

We cannot talk about Amritsar without talking about the Golden Temple. The holy shrine is also known as the Sri Harmandir Sahib or Darbar Sahib. It doesn’t discriminate against any community, so people of all ages and religions are allowed inside the temple. The Gurudwara complex has a few rules, where you need to take off your shoes and cover your hair. The temple is a two-storeyed building and there are both Islamic and Hindu architectural styles. The temple is covered in real gold and is surrounded by a lake called the Amrit Sarovar, which makes the setting more ethereal. One of the best places to visit in Amritsar, the temple’s interiors are beautiful and the walls are adorned with meenakari and glasswork using semi-precious stones.

The temple also houses the holy book of the Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib. Another interesting aspect of the temple is its langar . One of the world’s largest community kitchens, the langar provides free vegetarian meals to everyone who knocks on its door. There are many that volunteer in this kitchen and help out. The best time to see the Golden Temple is at sunrise. As the golden rays fall on golden walls, the entire place seems like a slice of heaven.

2. Preserving The Justice: Akal Takht

A temple that is as important as the Golden Temple, Akal Takht is one of the five seats that represent power and authority in Sikhism. Amongst the five seats, Akal Takht is believed to be cardinal. The other four seats are Keshgarh Sahib (Anandpur), Patna Sahib, Hazur Sahib, and Damdama Sahib.

Akal Takht has five storeys and a golden dome, is influenced by the architectural style of the Sikhs, and is situated opposite the Golden Temple. The word akal means timeless and takht means throne so it translates to Throne of the Immortal. It is believed that Guru Hargobind Ji sat on this throne and solved all the disputes in the Sikh community, and made sure that justice prevailed. On June 15, 1606, the first stone of this structure was laid by Guru Hargobind Sahib. Such places to visit in Amritsar are deeply rooted in the history and culture of the region. 

3. A Unique Experience: Wagah Border

Located 30 km from Amritsar, the Wagah border is also called the ‘Berlin Wall of India’. It is the road that identifies the boundary that separates India and Pakistan. There is also an important ceremony that happens at this border that makes it an important place to visit in Amritsar. The Beating Retreat is performed by the soldiers of both India and Pakistan. The soldiers lower the flags of their respective countries and perform military exercises. This retreat ceremony has been held every day since 1959. Different from most tourist places of Amritsar, the ceremony at Wagah Border is 45 minutes long. You can watch it free of cost but make sure to arrive an hour early to get the best seats. The retreat starts 30 minutes before dusk, so in winter, it takes place from 4:15-5 PM and in summer from 5:15-6 PM. 

4. Paying Respect To Lost Lives: Jallianwala Bagh

“This is the place where the bullets were fired from,” reads a plaque at Jallianwala Bagh. The massacre of men, women, and children will be remembered as one of the worst massacres in the history of the Indian struggle for freedom. On April 13, 1919, on Vaisakhi (the Sikh harvest festival), General Dyer of the British army, opened fire on innocent Indians who had gathered for a peaceful meeting at Jallianwala Bagh. In a garden spread across 6.5 acres, a large stone memorial was built by American architect Benjamin Polk after India gained independence. You can also still see the bullet holes on the walls of the garden, as well as the well into which many people jumped to escape the gunfire. Since there was only one exit and entry point back then (which General Dyer blocked), many people lost their lives because they couldn’t escape. 

5. Hindu Mythology In Amritsar: Ram Tirath Ashram 

Ram Tirth Ashram is one of the most fascinating places to visit in Amritsar. Attached to Hindu mythology, it’s a pilgrimage centre, believed to be the place where the sage Valmiki penned the epic of Ramayana. It’s located 11 km from Amritsar. It’s also believed that this is where Sita gave birth to her children, Luv and Kush. It is also called the Bhagwan Valmiki Tirath Sthal because Valmiki’s ashram (hermitage) is said to have been here. The temple was built to commemorate the holy site, and there is also a statue of the sage, that is gold plated.

6. House Of The Warriors: Gobindgarh Fort

Now open to the public as a heritage museum, the Gobindgarh Fort was first built by a Sikh warrior called Gujjar Singh Bhangi and his army. The fort was renovated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh and named Gobindgarh Fort, after the 10th Sikh guru, but before that, it was called the Bhangian da Killa. The fort was constructed in a square pattern using brick and lime. It has two gates, the main one is called Nalwa Gate and the second is called Keelar Gate. An interesting thing about the Keelar Gate is that it is believed to be joined to a tunnel that leads to Lahore. Until February 10, 2017, the fort was under the control of the Indian army.

Different places to visit in Amritsar have different significance, and this fort has played an important role in the history of Amritsar, both pre and post-independence. Now there are many theme parks and museums like the warfare museum, coin museum, haat bazaar and a 7D show experience with interactive videos, motion chairs along with light and sound effects, that depict the life of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Earlier, the fort had 25 cannons. Later, from the mid-19th century to 1947, the British army introduced many features like the Hawa Mahal, Phansi Ghar, and Darbar Hall, as well as defence upgrades.

7. The Sikh Culture And Heritage: Central Sikh Museum

The Central Sikh Museum depicts the bloodshed of the Sikh community at the hands of the Mughals, British, as well as Operation Blue Star ordered by former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It is one of the most important places to visit in Amritsar as it sheds light on Sikh history. The museum is also a way of preserving the heritage of the Sikh community with exhibits highlighting the sacred words and meanings behind their sacred banner, paintings, and drawings of Sikhs at war, paintings of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and other exhibits that depict Sikh traditions like weddings and festivals. The Central Sikh Museum was established in 1985 and maintains a collection of ancient manuscripts, coins, and warfare artefacts. The museum also has a gallery with portraits of important people in the Sikh community, including their gurus, saints, warriors, and leaders. 

8. Remembering The Dark Past: Partition Museum

The partition of India and Pakistan was one of the biggest genocides in the two countries’ history, and the largest exodus. Punjab was particularly affected by this division because of its proximity to the Indo-Pak border. Many peoples’ lives, dignity, family members, wealth, and houses were forcefully taken away from them. The Partition Museum, located in the Town Hall building in Amritsar, details the timeline, from the early demand of different states for Hindus and Muslims to the struggle for independence and the partition. It strives to retell the experiences of the people who had to suffer through partition.

The museum displays objects carried by refugees like utensils, clothes, and jewellery among others. These artefacts were once owned by people from different backgrounds showing how the trauma prevailed regardless of social differences. It also has audiovisual stations with interviews with refugees that give them a platform to voice their stories. The museum also has art and literature regarding the India-Pakistan Partition. 

9. Give Your Taste Palate A Treat: Kesar da Dhaba

Amritsar is a food paradise for vegetarians. The Amritsari kulcha with chole is famous throughout India. One of the most visited tourist places of Amritsar, Kesar da Dhaba gives you the Amritsari taste with pure ghee spread over parathas, accompanied by lassi , dal and phirni. Tucked away in the small lanes of the Chowk Passian, lies Kesar da Dhaba. At first glance, you might think of it as any other dhaba, as it lacks any grandeur. Don’t be deceived, as it is one of the most sought-after dhabas in Amritsar.

This eatery was started by a couple, Lala Kesar Mal and Parvati, in 1916 in Sheikhpura, Pakistan. After Partition, the couple shifted the dhaba to Amritsar. Their thali is the most famous dish, with palak paneer , dal makhani , malai kofta curry, Punjabi chole , cucumber raita , salad , and lachcha paratha . All these dishes are very tasty and are priced very reasonably. You can also step inside the kitchen and watch the magic unfold. 

Everyone’s City 

The city also has a shopping centre called Hall Bazaar. It has everything from textiles and electronic gadgets to accessories. The street food in Hall Bazaar is a must-try. The entire city generates a feeling of ‘community’ which is imbibed in Sikh religion and culture. People here are warm and welcoming and make you feel involved, as opposed to being a mere visitor witnessing it from the outside. Indians and foreigners alike feel a sense of belonging. The gurudwaras and langars are open most of the time, they do not have many restrictions and don’t turn anyone away. The city gives importance to equality and faith and celebrates them.

Frankly, summer is one of the worst times to visit Amritsar as the temperatures can rise as high as 49 degrees Celsius. You will be sweating the entire time you are exploring the city which can seriously damper your trip experience.

Winter Season (October to March)

Although you can visit Amritsar throughout the year, the best time to visit Amritsar is between the months of October and March.

Amritsar temperature in the winter is cool and pleasant for a few months except December and January when it can get extremely cold. Somedays it can be as low as 1 degree Celsius as well, especially during nightfall.

So, if the cold bothers you, then you can plan your visit in the months of October, November, February, and March. However, do plan your trip ahead as this is a popular time for visiting Amritsar so most hotels and hostels can be sold out.

Monsoon Season (July – September)

Another great time to visit Amritsar is the monsoon months of July to September. The monsoon brings heavy rainfall to Amritsar so, if you don’t like rain then this might not be the best time to visit.

That being said, rain also means that the city is fresh and lush green, making it a sight to behold.

How to Travel in Amritsar

You won’t find buses as such in the city, especially to travel between the railway station and the Golden Temple. There is only sightseeing buses available and hop-on-hop-off bus for Wagah Border.

Autorickshaws

One of the best and most budget-friendly ways to travel from one place to another in Amritsar is an autorickshaw. Make sure to bargain properly but you don’t have to worry too much.

An autorickshaw from the railway station to the Golden Temple won’t cost you more than 40-50 INR.

Cabs and Taxis

Of course, if money is not an issue and you are looking for convenience over budget, then cabs and taxis are the best way to travel in Amritsar. You can easily take a cab for around 2000 – 3000 INR to explore the attractions in Amritsar.

Rental Scooty

If you wish to travel to far-off places in Amritsar, then you should rent a scooty for 500 INR per day. This way, you can not only travel to attractions in the city but also places like Wagah Border and more.

At the langar, you will enjoy roti, dal, and sabji for free. It is served by volunteers and is offered to all visitors, regardless of their age, caste, gender, or religion.

Amritsari Kulcha

Of course, when you are visiting this city, you have to try the most famous food in Amritsar – Amritsari Kulcha.

This is the perfect breakfast dish and can be found in most restaurants in Amritsar. Filled with potato or paneer, the kulchas are served with a side of chole and spicy chutney.

Gur Ka Halwa

You generally don’t find it in other cities in India which is why if you love halwas, then you should try this. Gur ka Halwa might sound like it is extremely sweet but that’s not the case, it has the exact amount of sweetness and tastes amazing!

Sarso da Saag and Makki di Roti

The best thing to try in Amritsar in winter, Sarson da Saag and Makki di Roti is a must-try. Made from fresh mustard leaves, the smooth and ghee-soaked saag is served with corn-flavored rotis. You can find this also at most of the dhabas in Amritsar.

Lassi and Chhaas

Another great drink that you must try in Amritsar is Lassi and Chhaas. Of course, you can get it at a lot of places around the city but the best one has to be in Ahuja.

Although Amritsar is the holiest city for Sikh pilgrims, travelers of all faith and interests visit this beautiful place in Punjab. Popular places to visit in Amritsar include the Golden Temple, Akal Takht , Jallianwala Bagh, and Gobindgarh Fort . While the Old City to the south of Amritsar station is dotted with several historical structures and sights like the Golden Temple, the North side of Amritsar features upmarket restaurants, hotels, and spacey neighborhoods, and other shining signs of the city’s contemporary prosperity. Let’s take a closer look at all the points of interest in Amritsar:

Certainly a major highlight of all Amritsar sightseeing tours , the Golden Temple is the most significant religious site for the Sikhs and also one of the most spectacular temples in India. Also known as Shri Harmandir Sahib or Darbar Sahib, the Golden Temple is one of the top attractions in Amritsar. The temple complex is open every day from 6 am to 2 am, so visitors can enjoy its lovely reflections in Amrit Sarovar in the evening.

The two-storey structure in the middle of the sacred pool can be entered via a narrow bridge. Pilgrims can take a bath in the marked spots in the pool, before bowing their head in the temple. The Central Sikh Museum here displays a gallery of paintings illustrating stories of martyred Sikh leaders. The Golden Temple also has a famous dining hall (langar) serving free meals to all visitors round the clock.

On a trip to Amritsar, Jallianwala Bagh is one of the famous tourist attractions in Amritsar . Located five-minute walk from the Golden Temple, this 6.5-acre garden is the site of the infamous 1919 Amritsar massacre on the day of Baisakhi. To this day, visitors can see the bullet holes in the walls. One of the latest addition to Amritsar sightseeing places , Gobindgarh Fort lies in the heart of the city and was opened to public visitors in 2017.

After enjoying sightseeing in Amritsar , travelers can head 32 km west to the Wagah town. Every evening for two hours at the border gate, the Wagah border ceremony is performed by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) and the Pakistani Rangers. Pul Kanjri is a historical site about 35 km from Amritsar where structures like a mosque, temple, and a pond were built under the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Mata Temple is a Hindu cave temple dedicated to the saint named Lal Devi. Durgiana Temple or Sitla Mandir is another place of worship near the Lohgarh gate. Built-in the style of Golden Temple, it is also built in the middle of a medium-sized lake. Summer Palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in Ram Bagh Park, the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Panorama, Partition Museum, and Ram Tirth are other popular places to visit in Amritsar city.
