Pat Tynan and his passion for local history

As part of our research before leaving for our trip of Ireland, we read about the tour that Pat Tynan conducts on Trip Advisor. We walked to the Information Centre from our B&B in pouring rain and as we were a bit late the receptionist kindly contacted Pat on his mobile and we caught up with him at the Town Hall. Pat’s passion for Irish history made the one hour tour very interesting. Well worth the 10 Euro cost.

Great tour of the Medieval Mile with Pat

This tour leaves from the tourist information office each day at 2pm. The tour guide Pat is a local who clearly cares about his city and knows a great deal about it. The tour is very good with a lot of local information and history. Definitely worth the €10 we paid

Highlight of our trip to Kilkenny

John britton.

A little bit about me. I was born and raised here in Kilkenny, where I live with my wife, our daughter and our dog. I love everything about my home city, particularly reading about our great history. Tourist guiding allows me to combine this passion with my love of languages, and I give separate tours in French, and German.

My family has lived in Kilkenny for many years, in fact my family worked in Smithwick’s brewery for over one hundred years. My great-great-grandfather was an engine driver, my great-grandfather worked as a stoker, my grandfather was the yard foreman, and my father was a racking plant supervisor.

A professional tourist guide

I graduated with a diploma in International Hotel Management and Business Studies from Shannon College of Hotel Management. I worked in the hospitality industry for many years. My work brought me to Switzerland, France and England.

I took up a summer role at Jerpoint Park, which is where I first started to guide. The following season I worked in Kilkenny castle. In 2019, I established Ormonde Language Tours while studying for a degree in language studies. There are very few experiences in Ireland that offer their services to independent travellers in other languages, and I am making this possible.
