The best bus tours in Dublin

Author\'s image

Go sightseeing in Dublin on a city bus tour, and see all the landmarks in one day.

If you’re short on time, a bus tour is a great way to see Dublin. You can tick off all the major sights in one fell swoop, without your step counter going through the roof.

Whether you want to pack in as much as you can, or simply see the sights from the comfort of a double decker bus, these tours will show you the best of Dublin.

  • 1 . Hop On Hop Off Tour by DoDublin Tours
  • 2 . Big Bus Dublin
  • 3 . City Sightseeing
  • 4 . Vintage Tea Trips
  • 5 . What to see in Dublin

Seeing the city by bus means you don’t need to decide between visiting Kilmainham Gaol or the Phoenix Park , because you can do it all in one day, hopping on and off at your leisure. Better still, you’ll often be accompanied by a tour guide who can point out the local hotspots as you sail on past.

It's also a cost-effective way to see the city, particularly if tickets to museums or other attractions are thrown into the mix. As a general rule, you can expect to pay around €30 for a 24-hour hop on, hop off tour, or around €35 for a two-day ticket. On most of the tours, at least one child goes free per adult, making family tours even better value.

But bus tours aren’t just for seeing the city. Nearby attractions are also at your fingertips, on tours that take you all around Ireland without you having to hire a car or navigate public transport. You can head off to places like the Cliffs of Moher or the Giant's Causeway and be back in the city by nightfall.

Hop On Hop Off Tour by DoDublin Tours

You’ll spot these bright green buses all over the city. Their hop on, hop off tours take in all the major sights, including the Guinness Storehouse, Trinity College and EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum . But they also stop off at the smaller attractions, like Teeling Whiskey Distillery in the Liberties and Marsh’s Library , right next to St Patrick’s Cathedral . A ticket also includes entry to the Little Museum of Dublin and a Pat Liddy's walking tour . Buses depart from O’Connell Street regularly.

Guinness Storehouse

If you want to get out of the city, they also run tours south to Wicklow and Glendalough, or north up to Belfast and the Causeway Coast. They also offer a Ghostbus tour of Dublin, where you’ll visit a medieval vault and a city graveyard, accompanied by some fairly theatrical characters. While their original tour is most definitely not for kids, they’ve now created a version for children aged between 7-14.

Big Bus Dublin

This bus tour takes in 25 stops around Dublin, with a guide pointing out all the sights of the city, or a pre-recorded commentary available in eight languages. As well as all the locations set in the middle of the city, the tours head out to Dublin Zoo in the Phoenix Park, as well as Kilmainham Gaol and Richmond Barracks . Even if you don’t hop off and explore those sights, the trip will give you a broader sense of Dublin’s geography away from the city centre. The regular tours kick off from O’Connell Street, check Big Bus Tours Dublin for up-to-date departure times.

All tickets include a walking tour, and there’s free Wi-Fi on the bus, too — so you can plot out your next move, or post a video of the on-board singalongs to Instagram. They also offer a night tour , so you can see all the landmarks illuminated after dark, like the lights of St Patrick’s Cathedral or the buildings that line the River Liffey. There’s also a deluxe package available, which includes the hop on, hop off ticket for three days, a night tour and a half day coastal tour to the fishing village of Howth .

City Sightseeing

There are more than 30 stops on the City Sightseeing hop on, hop off tour, including Jeanie Johnston , a replica famine ship on the River Liffey, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Kilmainham. Buses run every hour, departing from Trinity College.

As well as the included stops in the city, you can get picked up in the morning from bus stops around Ballsbridge, which is handy if you’re staying in that neighbourhood and want to see the more central sights without getting separate transport into town.

They also offer a river cruise along the Liffey, giving you a unique perspective of the city from the water. Starting at Bachelor’s Walk, you’ll sail under O’Connell Bridge and past the 18th-century Custom House, all the way to the glass and steel architecture of the Docklands.

Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA)

Vintage tea trips.

This isn’t a traditional bus tour. Instead of hopping off at various spots, you’ll stay on the vintage bus for the duration of your journey, passing the highlights of the city as you tuck into afternoon tea accompanied by the sounds of 1950s jazz. You’ll see sights like Trinity College, the Phoenix Park and Christ Church Cathedral , with freshly made sandwiches, desserts and pastries on the table in front of you.

Use this Net Income Calculator to understand how this is calculated.

Affordability is a key criteria and is measured as rent being no more than 35% of your Net Household Income. In order to be considered for Cost Rental Housing, each applicant will be required to clearly outline how they reached the Net Household Income calculation with supporting documentation.

Eligibility Criteria

  •   Your net household income is below €66,000 per annum.
  •   You do not own a property in Ireland or elsewhere.
  •   You are not in receipt of any social housing supports (including Rent Supplement or HAP).
  •   Your household size matches the size of the property advertised (All members of the household must be living in Ireland at time of applying).
  •   You can afford to pay the cost rent for the home. Please see FAQs below for further information.
  •   Your household has only entered one application for a specific cost rental property.

Frequently asked questions

Proof of income documents required:

How much is the rent?

All cost rental rents are set at a level below the market rents in the area where the scheme is located.

Below are the monthly rents of each property being offered under the Cost Rental Scheme at Parkside.

How much is the deposit?

The deposits for each unit type will be one month's rent less 50 euro so they are:

  • Deposit studio apartment €950
  • Deposit one-bed apartment €1,270
  • Deposit two-bed apartment €1,585
  • Deposit two-bed duplex apartment with study €1,650

Are the apartments furnished?

The apartments are unfurnished to allow residents to furnish them according to their own taste and to provide below market rents. However, the following items are included;

  • White goods (fridge-freezer, dishwasher, oven & hob, microwave, washer-dryer).
  • Roller blinds, with blackout blinds in bedrooms.
  • Flooring – laminate flooring throughout, except bathrooms, which are tiled.
  • All utilities (electricity, internet, telephone, etc.) will need to be set up by the resident.

How long is the tenancy?

Provided there are no issues with breach of tenancy or rent arrears, after six months in occupation you will have a tenancy of unlimited duration, subject to you complying with your tenancy obligations and the unit continues to meet the needs of you and the people living with you as it relates to the number of bedspaces and the size and make up of the occupants.

These properties are a long-term rental option that offer security of tenure.

Will I be able to purchase the property?

No. These properties will not be available to purchase.

What if my circumstances change after I’ve been allocated a property?

Applications are assessed at point of entry. If for example, after you’ve been allocated a property your household income increased above €66,000 per annum for Dublin and €59,000 for elsewhere in the country you would still be entitled to continue renting the property.

How do I know if I can afford the rent?

Affordability is based on the rent being no more than 35% of your Net Income. This is one of the core eligibility criteria for the scheme and will be used to initially stream applicants into the lottery. Applicants successful in the lottery will be asked to document their Net Income calculation as part of the information required to move to the next phase.

If we have insufficient expressions of interest from applicants who meet the affordability criteria we may open a lottery for applicants in excess of this figure. However they will be asked to provide details of their rent history for the previous two years (that they have paid a similar or higher rent) and to demonstrate they have not defaulted on rent in order to assess their ability to pay a higher percentage of Net Income as rent.

Will you contact me if I am unsuccessful?

Yes, unsuccessful applicants will be informed within 20 days of the application closing date.

Can I add my name to a cost rental waiting list?

No, we will not be maintaining a waiting list for cost rental housing across multiple schemes. You will be able to apply again when further schemes are advertised.

Are pets allowed?

Pets are not permitted in Parkside.

Is car parking available?

Car parking is available at an additional charge per month. *Subject to availability*

Will there be further cost rental schemes?

Yes, there will. Keep an eye on our website for further details.

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!
