Tour Scoop

The Scoop: What to Know About Cosmos

Globus-owned cosmos focuses on affordability and experiences around the world..

Christine Sarkis

The Scoop: What to Know About Trafalgar Tours

  • Considering booking a tour with Cosmos? I’ve distilled everything you need to know before booking into one scannable page.
  • I’ve verified all the details to make sure the information I’m sharing is spot on and updated for 2024.

If you know the tour company Globus , you already have a baseline for understanding Cosmos , since it’s the budget-traveler-minded arm of Globus. Like its sister company, Cosmos has been around for decades: it’s been offering tours for 60 years. It has a wide range of tours around the world and a strong Europe focus.

In addition to its standard coach tours, Cosmos also has a bunch of other, more specialized tour formats, including small group, “undiscovered” (going off the beaten track in popular destinations), and special-event focused tours. New for 2024, Cosmos is launching So Low pricing that waives the single supplement for solo travelers on select tours.

TourScoop Takeaways

Here’s a quick overview of Cosmos:

  • Countries: 60 countries on 5 continents
  • Tour Size Average: 38 (classic tours), 20-24 (Small Group Discoveries)
  • Tour Type: Primarily coach

How to Book

To book, you can pretty easily go direct through Cosmos via its website. You can also look for deals and help using an online travel agent like  Travelstride  or  TourRadar . Cosmos also has a t ravel agent locator tool on its website.

Credibility Check

Cosmos has solid credibility and satisfaction scores. As part of the Globus family of brands, it has BBB Accreditation and an A+ rating. On Trustpilot , its rating is 4.5 out of 5 (up from 4.3 last year), and its guest-review score on TourRadar is 4.2 out of 5.

Tour Destinations

View of zebras on a dirt road on safari in Ngorongoro

Cosmos has a wide reach, with tours in 60 countries on five continents. Among the most popular destinations on its more than 100 different itineraries are Britain and Ireland, Canada, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. It also has a number of tours within the U.S.

Cosmos stands out for its affordability and variety of tour styles, even those who don’t necessarily see themselves as tour-type people. Here’s a rundown of tour types (but note that not every tour type is offered in every destination):

  • Small Group Discoveries :   Small Group Discoveries tours are sized between 20 and 24 people (versus the average traditional tour group size of 38). There are small-group tour options for every tour in Europe and North America, and for some dates on South Pacific tours.
  • Undiscovered Tours :   Both Cosmos and its sister-brand Globus offer these “Undiscovered Tours” designed to take guests off the beaten track and into lesser-known and traveled towns and villages with more time in destination. Born notes that these tours are great for “repeat travelers and for those looking for a more in-depth experience in their chosen destination.”
  • Special Event Tours:   Cosmos Special Event vacations focus on large celebrations in North America (think Albuquerque’s Balloon Fiesta and the Calgary Stampede). These tours offer special benefits like better access, close-up views, and behind-the-scenes experiences.

INSIDER JAPAN: 10 Best Japan Tours for 2024

  • Faith-Based Tours :   Cosmos also offers a range of Faith-Based Vacations that highlight centuries of religious history.  These Christianity-focused tours include sacred locations in the Holy Land, Italy, Spain and Portugal.
  • Cruise and Land Tours : The tour company mixes land and cruise experiences on these tours to destination pairs like the Canadian Rockies and Alaska, and Greece and the Aegean Islands.
  • National Parks Tours : Cosmos has about a dozen U.S. national park focused tours. Some mix train journeys or cruises into the tour itinerary.

You can also search tours that are particularly affordable by looking at its Dreams on a Budget section, which features tours under $1,600 per person. And of note for solo travelers is that the single supplement is waived on select departures each year.

Tour Guides

Cosmos tour guides receive extensive training that includes certification by the destination authority and proficiency in multiple languages. Most are from the country in which they lead tours, and all are selected for their passion for travel and their storytelling abilities. Cosmos tour directors average 20 years with the company.

ARRIVE PREPARED: 10 Things to Know Before Your First Group Tour

In addition to the tour directors, Cosmos has a strong network of local guides, many of whom have worked with the company for years.

Inclusions/Extras

Cosmos was an early pioneer in value touring vacation travel, and focuses on turning people’s travel dreams into reality, even when a budget is tight. Cosmos gets to the lower price point by preserving experiences and finding more affordable (but still conveniently located and of good quality) hotels.

Cosmos tours include experienced Tour Directors, pre-selected hotels, guided city sightseeing, transportation, and select meals, including breakfast each day.

Optional excursions can be purchased pre-trip.  Cosmos can also add flights to and from the tour, with schedules coordinated with the tour.  Flights include complimentary airport transfers to-and from the hotel.  And airport transfers can also be added for land-only guests.

Typical Travelers

The average Cosmos traveler is in their early- to mid-50s. Guests come from a range of generally English-speaking countries, primarily U.S. but also Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Cosmos travelers are an even mix of seasoned travelers and first-timers.  The majority are couples and families, but typically 20%+ are solo travelers.

Communication

The standard pre-trip communication is made up of five emails, including the all-important Travel Packet, with has the detailed itinerary, schedule and flight information (if flights booked through Cosmos), destination information, tips and guidelines on pre-trip requirements and preparation for the destination, and information about booking optional excursions 90 days or closer to the departure date. Vacation planners are available by phone, email and online chat six days a week.

Perfect Fit: How to Choose the Best European Tour for You

Cosmos also has the Cosmos GO app, which provides access to all tour components, including schedules, hotels, included features, destination information, optional excursions, interactive maps and more.  This access is provided pre-trip, 30-40 days prior to departure.

Loyalty Program

The Globus family of brands (Cosmos, along with Globus and Avalon River Cruises) offers a Welcome Back Credit loyalty program. Each trip earns guests up to $250 credit to use on a future trip with any of the brands.

The per-person credit is based on the tour price:

  • $2,499 or Less =   $100 credit
  • $2,500 – $3,499 = $150 credit
  • $3,500 – $4,499 = $200 credit
  • $4,500 & Over =   $250 credit

Guests have two years to book/deposit a vacation using the credit.

Private Options

Any Cosmos Europe tour can be converted into a Private Tour for between one and 24 people. There’s an additional premium, based on the overall number of guests, which is charged for each traveler in addition to the published tour price. Private tour groups get a dedicated tour director, private transportation and driver, and personal, and professional local guides, plus all of the visits and entrances in the original published itinerary. Private tours offer flexibility in both pace and experiences for you and your travel companions. To pursue a private tour with Cosmos, choose your tour from the Cosmos Europe lineup and then contact the company.

Sustainability Efforts

Cosmos is part of the Globus family of brands. The company’s Lighthouse Project focuses on projects that benefit people, places, and the planet, with dozens of areas of focus within each category. Projects include support of The Ocean Cleanup, Trees4Travel, Landmine Design and dozens of other projects and initiatives worldwide.

Health and Safety Practices

Cosmos’ health and safety policy currently includes enhanced cleaning protocols on coaches, hotels, and ships. Cosmos also has a Travel Protection plan that includes a cancel for any reason benefit and covers expenses related to trip interruptions.

Best destinations to see Cosmos in Japan

cosmos tours japan

As a country with four seasons, Japan is fortunate to have various kinds of flowers blooming throughout the year. Particularly known for its beautiful cherry blossoms in spring, there are many flowers cherishing other seasons with its colorful petals, and Cosmos is one of them.

Cosmos flowers are known as Japan’s “autumn cherry blossoms” , particularly for its pinkish petals and beauty. There are numerous places to enjoy cosmos in Japan, and today, we’ve picked five of the best spots to enjoy cosmos in Japan!

Index : Best destinations to see Cosmos in Japan

1. kirin beer factory cosmos fields, fukuoka, 2. awaji hanasajiki, hyogo, 3. iwappara cosmos park, niigata, 4. taiyo no oka at engaru park, hokkaido, 5. showa memorial park, tokyo.

cosmos tours japan

Kirin Beer Factory Cosmos Fields is a unique cosmos field, particularly for its location, which sits right by the Kirin Beer Factory in Fukuoka. Only at this place, you can enjoy both cosmos and beers, as the factory offers tours that educate visitors about the beer brewing process (in Japanese only) and beer tasting as well.

You can start your adventure here by seeing the flowers first, and end it with a few glasses of beer, or vice versa.

Awaji Hanasajiki is a botanical garden in Awaji, Hyogo Prefecture, and at this garden you’ll find a wide range of flowers blooming here throughout the year, including poppies in spring, sunflowers in summer, and stock flowers in winter.

One of the best seasons to visit this garden is in the autumn, when the field is covered with cosmos flowers, which bloom from early October to early November, creating a pink ocean with their pink petals.

Iwappara Cosmos Park is, at least for now, a hidden gem in Niigata best known for its beautiful cosmos flowers and lavish greens. The park is situated on a hill in the Uonuma City, a city in Japan that is best known for its extremely delicious rice and often referred to as snow country for its heavy snowfalls.

Many people visit the park to take pictures of the cosmos flowers with a mountain in the back, and due to its heavy snowfalls, the park is closed in the winter months. Therefore, visiting the park to see the cosmos is the perfect way to say goodbye to autumn.

Engaru Park is a flower park located way up North of Hokkaido, in the Monbetsu region, and the park is best known for its Taiyo no Oka , a spot that is home to many varieties of cosmos, including the early-blooming Versailles Radiance Special, and the Double Click cosmos, which are known for their double conical petals.

The park entry is free, so make sure to stop by this place when you’re in the area for its incredibly beautiful cosmos.

cosmos tours japan

Showa Memorial Park is one of the best, and also one of the largest outdoor parks in Tokyo, where you can enjoy the beauty of four seasons throughout the year.

The park is known for its beautiful poppies in spring, and in autumn, many people visit this park for its ginkgo tree-lined avenue, which turns to a stunning gold and yellow hue.

Showa Memorial Park has over 5 million cosmos flowers blooming in autumn, covering the field with its beautiful pinkish petals.

And in doing that, we help travelers expand their horizons, clear their heads and open their hearts to the world around them. Cosmos understands that adventure is waiting for us – all of us – out in the world. And there simply is no better time than the present to discover new sights, new sensations and new experiences. And you never have to worry about getting to the ferry on time, buying tickets for the train, or waiting in long lines to take the cable car.

Sightseeing

Our tour packages include guided sightseeing and scenic highlights that reveal the best of Europe, the U.S., Canada, Asia, Australia, and South America. Bask in the beauty of Italy, America’s National Parks, the Canadian Rockies, the mysteries of the Inca Empire in Peru, and so much more. Enjoy inside visits of the must-see sites with knowledgeable Local Guides who bring each destination to life.

Personalization

We build free time into every Cosmos vacation, so you can eat, shop, and explore the way you want. Whether you’re into art, music, food, wine, or history, we give you the freedom to truly personalize your trip with optional excursions that are meaningful to you. Best of all, you can make your selections, and even prepay for most of them, in advance online.

When it comes to meals, Cosmos strikes a perfect balance. We include some meals to save you time and money, yet we also leave enough free time so you can sample your destination’s gastronomic delights on your own.

Accommodations

Where You Stay Makes All the Difference.  After a day of traveling you want to relax at a comfortable, clean, and attractive hotel. We prescreen and select hotels with the best guestrooms (always with a private bathroom), service, and quality for the value.

At the heart of every great Cosmos tour are the friendly, knowledgeable folks who share their local destinations with you and help you maximize your free time with insights and recommendations. Follow us to the off-the-beaten-path locations with the charm, tradition, and cultural beauty that can only be found in the authentic towns and landscapes of Europe. In Touring We Trust Cosmos has always greeted the most fascinating places across the globe with unmatched intrigue, curiosity and wonder. Along the way, we’ve discovered the sights to see, encountered the people to meet, engaged in the customs to sample and indulged in the cuisine to taste. And we’ve done this while bundling unrivaled knowledge from Tour Directors and local guides with first-class accommodations and transportation to help you greet the globe on a journey that goes beyond the ordinary. In short, touring offers over-the-moon experiences without overthinking. When travelers, like you, choose a Cosmos tour, you say “goodbye” to worry, leaving you free to wander and wonder about the world around you. And that idea – and promise – couldn’t be more prevalent and welcomed today. While today’s world has changed, what remains certain is Cosmos’ commitment to your safety, comfort and peace-of-mind. Trust in Togetherness. When you travel with Cosmos, you’re choosing to explore the world in a select group of like-minded travelers: People who stick together, from start-to-finish. Now more than ever, there’s great comfort – and extraordinary confidence – in that choice. Small Groups, Big Experiences. Cosmos makes it easy to explore the world with calm and confidence with Small Group Discoveries available in many destinations. With an average of 24 guests per departure (in some cases even fewer), there’s always room to roam with extra space between you and other travelers—while still getting up close to fascinating attractions and the stories that make experiences feel personal and connected. Before you board, we will provide hand sanitizer, luggage disinfection and assigned seating to prevent the spread of germs. Our TDs are the Bees Knees. No one knows the ins and outs of your destination like your Cosmos Tour Director And no one is better equipped to ensure your time with us is both happy and healthy. The Lure of the Less Traveled. While it might be the iconic sights of the world that first entice us to pack our bags for adventure, it’s often the tucked-away towns, lesser-known nooks and secluded seafronts that beckon us to return. Our “Undiscovered” series of tours invite you to trade the Colosseum for the narrow lanes of Tuscan towns; the hustle and bustle of London for the quiet landscapes of the English countryside; Europe’s seas of tourists for the coastal villages of the Mediterranean and the crowded cities of North America for smaller, crowd-pleasing gems, from sea to shining sea. Carefree Confidence. The world has changed, but what remains certain is our commitment to guest safety and peace-of-mind while traveling. And wireless listening technology – including our Cosmos Go Beyond Devices in Europe – enables safe distances between our guests and other travelers on excursions. Each hotel has been checked to ensure they are meeting or exceeding government-mandated standards, and each must pass our strict health and safety requirements before you set foot in the lobby. Getting Around, Safe & Sound. Rest assured our state-of-the-art coaches and vehicles have undergone thorough cleaning between tours, and each day starts with a freshly-cleaned motorcoach as well as touch-ups at each stop. Before you board, we will provide hand sanitizer, luggage disinfection and assigned seating to prevent the spread of germs. Additionally, we won’t seat you next to anyone outside your traveling party, which means for solo travelers, we’ll reserve an extra empty seat next to you. Throughout your tour, our Tour Directors will keep an eye out for you, ensuring there’s appropriate social distancing, both while traveling and at attractions and restaurants, and making sure bags and coaches are sanitized each day. And while you enjoy your vacation, we are working behind-the-scenes to offer you safety with hands-free services, as traditional self-services have been replaced by staff service, including self-served buffet meals. Reviews of this operator

We have just returned from a cosmos….

We have just returned from a Cosmos tour- Gourmet Tuscany. We stayed in Montecatini Terme and traveled from there to many wonderful places, in towns and the fabulous Tuscan countryside. We visit Vineyards for wine tastings, farms for cooking lessons and lunches and dinners in authentic Italian restaurants. All assisted by a friendly, informative tour director. First class holiday

Excellent in every respect

I recently did a 2-week "best of Italy" tour with this company. Our guide, Daniella, was fantastic, the itinerary was excellent and they catered for my rather difficult dietary requirements really well. Really happy and will certainly book with them again

A wonderrful experience

WE saw so much. The tour director Mladin was very knowledgeable and made the experience so enjoyable. The bus driver Paul was so nice and helpful. A couple of the hotels had no refrigerators to keep the water cold. We had to carry our own luggage to and from the rooms. There should have been porters to help us. Over all we had a great time.

Old South &Florida tour

Great organisation, tour guide(Kris) and driver(Tony) who went extra mile and good group of people from all over world. The hotels were excellent in New Orleans and Nashville and very good in other cities. The itinerary was well thought out with visits to Gracelands and Grande ole Oprey topping the bill. We added 3extra nights in New Orleans (giving us 6nights) which was absolutely fab and would advise anyone doing this tour that they consider some extra nights to see and do as much as you can

The tour director expertise and…

The tour director expertise and personality made the trip all the more pleasant. No stress. The local guides as well added to the beauty of this trip. They were knowledgeable and personable. I also have to mention the travelers (the group of 21). The people were friendly an accommodating. This is my third trip with this tour company and I will continue to travel with this company due to excellent planning and customer service. Thank you

5 Spots to Enjoy Cosmos Flowers in Japan

Appreciate the flowers dubbed autumn's cherry blossoms

Kim

Cosmos flowers are one of the highlights of Japan's autumn months, and they often get the name of "autumn's cherry blossoms" owing to their color and beauty. There are numerous places to appreciate these colorful blooms across the country, but if you're wondering where to start here are five of the best!

Awaji Hanasajiki, Hyogo Prefecture

Awaji Hanasajiki is a botanical garden located in Hyogo Prefecture, and you'll find a wide range of blooms here to enjoy year-round including the likes of poppies and snapdragons in spring, sunflowers and blue salvia in summer, and stock flowers in winter. The highlight of autumn is the massive cosmos field which blooms from early October to early November.

One of Tokyo's outdoorsy delights is Showa Kinen Park, and a popular time to visit is during the autumn months. The park is known for its ginkgo tree-lined avenue which turns a stunning yellow hue, and the cosmos flowers are another delight of the season. The number of cosmos flowers planted here exceeds five million, which creates an incredibly picturesque scene.

Iwappara Cosmos Park, Niigata Prefecture

Regarded as something of a well-kept secret - perhaps not for long - the Iwappara Cosmos Park in Niigata Prefecture showcases these pretty blooms against a lush green mountain backdrop. The park is set up on a hill in the Uonuma countryside, a region of Japan often referred to as snow country. The park is closed during the winter months because of the heavy snowfalls the region gets, so enjoying the cosmos flowers is the perfect way to farewell the autumn season before the area is blanketed in white.

Taiyo-no-Oka Engaru Park, Hokkaido Prefecture

Way up north in Hokkaido's Monbetsu region, the Taiyo-no-Oka Engaru Park shines before winter with their incredible cosmos display. There are a host of different cosmos varieties planted here, including the likes of the early-blooming Versailles Radiance Special, to the Double Click cosmos which features unique double-petals in a conical shape. There's no admission fee to visit the park, so if you're in the area be sure to stop by.

Kirin Factory Cosmos Fields, Fukuoka Prefecture

One of the most unique cosmos fields in Japan is in Fukuoka, and it sits right by the Kirin beer factory. The factory offers tours which educate attendees about the beer making process (in Japanese only), and tastings are offered as well. Start with the flowers, end with the beer (or vice versa), and you've got yourself a ready-made fun day out.

Japan in September: The Best Things To Do and Places To Visit

August 30, 2024

Japan in September: Travel Overview

  • Weather: September is a transitional month from summer to autumn, with warm temperatures gradually cooling down. Expect some residual heat, especially in the early part of the month, along with the possibility of typhoons. Daytime temperatures usually range between 23° and 28° Celsius , while evenings can be cooler, particularly in the northern regions.
  • September is an ideal time for those looking to enjoy Japan’s natural beauty without the summer crowds. There are fewer people on the beaches, making it a great time for a late summer escape. Early autumn foliage can begin to appear in the northern regions like Hokkaido.
  • Events and Festivals: September is packed with traditional festivals and seasonal events. The Kishiwada Danjiri Festival in Osaka is a must-see, known for its thrilling danjiri (large wooden floats) races. Another highlight is the Ohara Hadaka ‘Naked Man’ Festival , a boisterous celebration in Chiba where loincloth-clad men carry mikoshi shrines into the sea to pray for a good autumn harvest.
  • Popular travel destinations such as Kyoto and Tokyo can still see significant foot traffic, especially during the Silver Week holiday in mid-September. It’s advisable to book accommodation early.

Popular Activities and Things To Do in September

Beach escapes.

Though summer is winding down, Japan’s beaches are still a prime destination for sun-seekers. September offers warm ocean temperatures and fewer crowds, making it a perfect time for a relaxing beach vacation.

Okinawa’s beaches are legendary, with soft, white sands and vibrant coral reefs. Yonaha Maehama Beach on Miyako Island is often touted as one of Japan’s most beautiful, with its seven kilometers of pure white sand and shallow, turquoise waters. For a more secluded experience, head to Furuzamami Beach on Zamami Island, part of the Kerama Islands, where the water is so clear you can see colorful fish swimming just beneath the surface.

Shirahama Beach, Wakayama

Closer to Japan’s main island, Shirahama Beach is known for its pristine, 800-meter stretch of fine sand imported from Australia . The beach is perfect for swimming and sunbathing, with nearby attractions such as Shirahama Onsen, one of Japan’s oldest hot springs, where you can soak in the waters while enjoying views of the Pacific Ocean.

cosmos tours japan

Kamakura, Kanagawa

Just a short train ride from Tokyo, Kamakura’s beaches , such as Yuigahama and Zaimokuza, offer a mix of natural beauty and cultural experiences. The historic town of Kamakura, with its ancient temples and the iconic Great Buddha, provides a perfect backdrop to a day spent by the sea. The beaches here are popular for surfers and the gentle waves are perfect for beginners. The sunset views over Sagami Bay are simply unforgettable.

Tips & Recommendations

For the ultimate beach experience, consider staying at a beachfront resort or a traditional ryokan with ocean views. Some places offer private access to the beach and amenities such as open-air baths and gourmet dining featuring local seafood. Be sure to check the weather forecast regularly, as September is still within typhoon season.

Autumn Hiking

As the weather cools, Japan’s mountainous regions become a hiker’s paradise. Early autumn hikes offer breathtaking views of the changing foliage, especially in the northern and higher altitude areas.

cosmos tours japan

Daisetsuzan National Park, Hokkaido

As Japan’s largest national park, Daisetsuzan is one of the first places in the country to witness the stunning autumn colors. The park’s high altitude means that the leaves can begin to change as early as mid-September. The Asahidake Ropeway takes you up to the Asahidake summit, where you can start your hike surrounded by vibrant alpine vegetation and panoramic views of the park’s volcanic landscape. For those seeking a challenge, the trail to Kurodake offers a more strenuous hike with equally rewarding vistas.

cosmos tours japan

Oze National Park, Gunma-Fukushima-Niigata-Tochigi

Oze is famous for its expansive wetlands and is one of Japan’s most beloved hiking destinations. In autumn, the marshlands are covered in golden grass, and the surrounding mountains are ablaze with color. The Ozenuma Pond and Ozegahara Marshland offer relatively easy hikes with stunning views of the changing seasons.

Mount Takao

Mount Takao, Tokyo

Just an hour from central Tokyo, Mount Takao is a popular hiking destination that offers both convenience and natural beauty. The Takao Trail, which leads to the Yakuoin Temple and the summit, provides sweeping views of the city and, on clear days, even Mount Fuji.

Autumn weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, with temperatures varying significantly between morning and afternoon. Dress in layers that can be easily added or removed as needed. A lightweight, waterproof jacket is essential, as afternoon rain showers are common. Some trails, especially in national parks like Daisetsuzan and Oze, are remote and require proper preparation. Ensure you have a map, enough water and snacks, as well as information about the trail’s difficulty and duration.

Attending Traditional Festivals

September is filled with lively matsuri that showcase Japan’s rich cultural heritage. From energetic float races to peaceful lantern ceremonies, there’s something for every type of traveler.

cosmos tours japan

Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri, Osaka

Held in the lively city of Kishiwada, this festival is renowned for its thrilling danjiri , or wooden float, races. These massive floats, each weighing several tons, are pulled through the narrow streets by teams of participants. The event is a true test of strength, coordination and community spirit, as the teams race at breakneck speeds, navigating sharp corners with incredible precision. The danjiri are works of art, adorned with intricate carvings and vibrant colors, making this festival as visually stunning as it is exhilarating.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Reitaisai Festival, Kamakura, Kanagawa

Reitaisai at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine offers a more serene and reflective festival experience. The highlight of this event is the yabusame , a traditional Japanese martial art where archers on horseback shoot arrows at targets while galloping at full speed. The festival also includes a grand procession of mikoshi , or portable shrines, music and traditional dances, all set against the backdrop of Kamakura’s ancient shrines and temples.

cosmos tours japan

Owara Kaze no Bon, Toyama

This enchanting festival in the small town of Yatsuo, Toyama Prefecture, is a celebration of the wind and the harvest. The town’s streets are lined with paper lanterns, casting a warm, golden glow over the nighttime festivities. The main attraction is the Owara dance , a slow and graceful performance that reflects the delicate beauty of the season. Dancers in traditional kimono and wide-brimmed hats move in unison, their movements gentle and flowing, as if carried by the wind itself. The accompanying music, played on shamisen and kokyu , adds a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack to the evening.

Popular festivals like Kishiwada Danjiri and the Nihonmatsu Lantern Festival attract large crowds, so arriving early is essential to secure a good viewing spot. Even in September, festival days can be long and warm, especially in crowded areas. Carry a bottle of water and stay hydrated, especially if you plan to participate in or watch active events like float-pulling or processions.

Top Destinations To Visit in September

cosmos tours japan

Shiretoko Peninsula

Located on the eastern edge of Hokkaido, the Shiretoko Peninsula is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its untouched wilderness and natural beauty. The peninsula is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including brown bears, deer and foxes, and offers breathtaking views of rugged cliffs, waterfalls and the Sea of Okhotsk. The five Shiretoko lakes, surrounded by dense forests, are especially picturesque during this time of year. Take a boat cruise along the coast to fully appreciate the dramatic landscape, or hike one of the many trails that offer panoramic views of the autumn foliage.

cosmos tours japan

Furano and Biei

Known for its stunning flower fields in summer, Furano transitions into a picturesque autumn landscape in September. While the lavender season has just ended, the region is now adorned with patches of cosmos, dahlias and sunflowers that add bursts of color against the backdrop of rolling hills. Nearby Biei, with its undulating fields and iconic Shirogane Blue Pond , offers equally breathtaking views. The hills of Biei, often compared to Tuscany, are a mosaic of autumn colors, perfect for leisurely drives or cycling. Don’t miss the Panorama Road, which offers spectacular vistas of the patchwork fields against the backdrop of Mount Tokachi.

Cuisine & Culture

Hokkaido is famous for its fresh seafood, and September is an excellent time to sample some of the best. Try Hokkaido’s signature dishes, such as crab and ikura (salmon roe) and uni (sea urchin). Head to the coastal cities such as Otaru or Hakodate for seafood markets, where you can enjoy these delicacies straight from the sea. Another must-try is the local specialty, soup curry, a flavorful dish that combines a spiced broth with vegetables, meat and rice. September is also the time for local harvest festivals, where you can experience Hokkaido’s rich agricultural heritage. Attend events like the Furano Wine Festival , where you can sample locally produced wine while enjoying live music and food stalls.

Hokkaido Tips & Recommendations

Hokkaido’s beauty lies in its vast, open landscapes, and the best way to explore them is by car. Renting a car gives you the flexibility to visit remote areas like Furano and Shiretoko at your own pace.

Kyoto in September offers a mix of lingering summer warmth and the start of cooler autumn days, making it perfect for temple and garden visits. The city’s famous sites like Kinkakuji, Fushimi Inari Shrine and Arashiyama Bamboo Forest are slightly less crowded than in peak seasons.

cosmos tours japan

Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion)

In September, Kinkakuji’s shimmering gold leaf exterior contrasts beautifully with the deep greens of the surrounding pines. The reflection of the pavilion in the mirror-like Kyokochi Pond is particularly striking in the soft, golden light of late afternoon. Take a quiet stroll around the garden, where the pathways meander through meticulously manicured landscapes.

cosmos tours japan

Fushimi Inari Shrine

Famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates, Fushimi Inari is a must-visit in any season, but September offers a slightly more tranquil experience as the summer crowds dissipate. The cooler weather makes the hike up Mount Inari more comfortable, and the forested paths are shaded and peaceful. As you ascend, you’ll encounter smaller shrines, stone fox statues and the occasional glimpse of Kyoto’s cityscape below, all framed by the vivid torii gates.

cosmos tours japan

Arashiyama Bamboo Forest

In the early mornings of September, the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest is bathed in soft, filtered light, creating an almost ethereal atmosphere. The towering bamboo stalks, gently swaying in the breeze, create a natural symphony that’s both calming and awe-inspiring. After wandering through the grove, cross the Togetsukyo Bridge, where the Katsura River flows serenely beneath.

Kyoto is the birthplace of kaiseki , a traditional multi-course meal that is as much about aesthetics as it is about taste. September’s kaiseki menus reflect the changing seasons, with dishes featuring seasonal ingredients like matsutake mushrooms, sweet potatoes and chestnuts. As the evenings begin to cool in September, there’s no better comfort food than yudofu , a simple yet flavorful tofu hot pot. Made with Kyoto’s famously soft tofu, the dish is served with a variety of dipping sauces and seasonal vegetables.

Kyoto Tips & Recommendations

Kyoto is a city best explored on foot, with its narrow streets, hidden alleys and numerous temples and gardens. Wear comfortable shoes to make the most of your day, especially if you plan to visit multiple sites. For a truly immersive experience, consider staying in a traditional ryokan. These Japanese inns offer tatami mat rooms, futon beds and often include kaiseki meals. Staying in a ryokan also allows you to enjoy the seasonal changes up close, as many ryokans feature beautiful gardens that reflect the natural beauty of Kyoto.

Nikko is rich in history and full of stunning nature, making it a popular place to-visit in September.

Toshogu shrine Nikko

Nikko Toshogu Shrine

The crown jewel of Nikko, Toshogu Shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dazzles with its elaborate carvings, gold leaf decorations and intricate woodwork. Dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, the shrine is surrounded by ancient cedar trees. Be sure to visit the famous Nemuri Neko ( Sleeping cat carving ) and the Five-Story Pagoda , both of which are iconic symbols of Toshogu’s artistic and spiritual significance.

cosmos tours japan

Irohazaka Winding Road

The Irohazaka Winding Road is an exhilarating drive that offers some of the most breathtaking views in Nikko. Comprising 48 hairpin turns that ascend the mountains, this road connects the lower town of Nikko with the Okunikko region. In September, as you navigate the twists and turns, you’ll be treated to panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains, which begin to light up with the first touches of autumn foliage. The journey culminates at the Akechidaira Ropeway Observation Deck , where you can take in sweeping views of the Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji.

Tochigi Prefecture is known for its high-quality sake, thanks to the pure mountain water and cool climate. In Nikko, you can visit local breweries to sample a variety of sake, from light and crisp varieties to richer, more full-bodied brews. Many breweries offer tours where you can learn about the traditional sake-making process and the importance of local ingredients. After a day of exploring, there’s nothing more relaxing than soaking in one of Nikko’s many hot spring baths. The mineral-rich waters are said to have healing properties, and the outdoor baths offer stunning views of the surrounding nature. Yunishigawa Onsen , in particular, is a charming hot spring village where you can enjoy a quiet and rejuvenating experience surrounded by mountains.

Nikko Tips & Recommendations

To enjoy the tranquility of Nikko’s most famous sites, such as Toshogu Shrine and Kegon Falls, it’s best to visit early in the morning before the crowds arrive.

Travel Tips and Recommendations

Transportation.

Despite the increase in price, the Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is still a good option for tourists planning to travel long distances, offering unlimited rides on JR trains, including the Shinkansen. It’s particularly cost-effective for trips between major cities like Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. For island destinations like Okinawa, domestic flights are quickest, with budget carriers like Peach Aviation offering frequent connections. Ferries are an option for a scenic route to Okinawa and smaller islands. For city travel, IC cards (Suica, Pasmo) streamline transit on trains, buses and even at convenience stores.

  • JR Pass: https://japanrailpass.net/en/
  • Peach Aviation: flypeach.com

Accommodation Recommendations

Book early, especially during Silver Week. Traditional ryokan offer an authentic experience with tatami rooms and hot spring baths, while minshuku (family-run inns) and temple lodgings provide a cultural stay. In cities, modern hotels and guesthouses cater to all budgets.

Packing Tips

Pack light layers for fluctuating temperatures and bring a rain jacket or umbrella for unexpected showers since typhoon season is in September. Comfortable, easy-to-remove shoes are ideal for visiting temples.

Budget Planning

Use regional rail passes for specific areas to save money on transportation. Look for discount tickets and combination passes for museums and attractions. Keep some cash on hand for rural areas and small purchases.
