Daggaboer Farm Stall
About Daggaboer Farm Stall
Travelling between Cradock and P.E. you will find Daggaboer Farmstall 50 km from Cradock. As one of our guests commented: “Daggaboer is part of our holiday. Once we've arrived here, we really start to relax.” In 2011 the travel magazines WEG & GO voted us as the best farm stall in the country. We believe that this honour was bestowed on us not only because of our vast array of top quality farm stall products (no tourist junk) but perhaps most of all due to our unaffected country hospitality, humour, quick service and unpretentious but very clean toilets. We are well known for our fresh roosterkoek, homemade pies, lemonade and ginger beer. A variety of more than 50 homemade jams and preserves, dried fruit, Dutch cheeses, biltong & dry wors (even many of the local farmers get theirs from us) mouth watering confectionery as well as a big range of quality gifts await you. Come and relax on the stoep with real moer-coffee, soak in the tranquility of the Middle Karoo and beautiful mountain scenery whilst enjoying a very generous slice of the best cheesecake, lemon meringue or milk tart.

Daggaboy Hunting Safaris
Namibia is perhaps best-known as a plains game destination, and Dawid Muller has excellent concessions for the full range of Namibian species. This includes his own farm, which is a rugged, beautiful free-range area just 40 miles from Windhoek…so you can be hunting kudu and gemsbok in little more than an hour after arrival! A big difference with Daggaboy Safaris is that Dawid Muller is also an extremely experienced dangerous game hunter, operating an excellent exclusive concession in eastern Caprivi bordering Mdumo National Park. There he offers excellent hunting for elephant and some of Namibia’s rarities such as roan, sable, and red lechwe. His first love, however, is hunting buffalo—hence the name of his safari company! Dawid manages one of Namibia’s largest quotas for buffalo, with big herds coming and going from both the Park and Botswana…and bachelor bulls— dagga boys—hiding on islands and in reedbeds. Buffalo quality is exceptional, some of the best I’ve seen…and Dawid and his team are some of the best buffalo hunters I’ve been with. Accommodations and food are excellent, “ranch style” for plains game and an excellent wilderness camp in Caprivi. In Namibia Daggaboy Hunting Safaris has it all!
Hunting seasons are which time of the year you will find which species to hunt. Some more information here about why hunting seasons are important to consider before choosing your next hunting experience.

About Daggaboer Farm Stall
The Daggaboer Farm Stall initially started off as an outlet for handmade sheepskin slippers and delicious (filled or plain) roosterkoek.
The Daggaboer Farm Stall still sells both sheepskin slippers and tasty roosterkoek but its also diversified into selling ginger beer, honey, boeremiesies (for those of you as ignorant as I am - these are apricots in witblits), pies and organic cheeses. Gifts such as soap, beautiful mohair blankets and scarves are also for sale.

The daggaboer farmstall - food and stories.
10 comments:
Lovely story, Marie.I bet the book will be interesting. But what caught my eye was the colourful rooster on the sign. And for further weed info, see here http://bookartobject.blogspot.com/2010/11/not-quite-walt-whitman.html if you missed it in the NYTimes
You have the best stories. xo jane
Oh how wonderful ! Can't wait for the book. And that's what I call a FARM STALL
Haha. Ek en J het ook nog nooit die daggaroete gevolg nie, is nog altyd te veel van 'n hoofseun- en dogter. So, wat maak jul Desember?
You'll have to enter that farmstall into our Puik Padstal competition (starting December online at www.weg.co.za). Looks fabulous.
Good story. Now, if Daggaboer translated literally is Pot farmer, then is 'boer' farmer. Then wors must be sausage (me think of the 'worst' as in bratworst) so that boerewors gets to mean Farmer Sausage? You probably already said all that, but I had a moment.
Thanks, MIT... Jane - nah, you do! Hen - I'm surprised you haven't stoppped at this place, but maybe you left Zebra from another direction. arcadia - is dit? uh, wat maak ons met rook in Desember of praat ons van eet? :-) Andy - hello, Coz. I bet this will be nominated by numerous people. Frank - you put Sherlock Holmes to shame. In a word, Yes!
Oh dear, I am going to have to admit that although at school I was incredibly strait-laced, I have smoked pot. Only twice in my life though, once as a student and once, well, actually only a few years ago... I must say I wouldn't mind having another go, if I knew how to get hold of it. (The Daggaboer is obviously not going to be an option.) I remember getting very erudite and spouting paragraphs of what I considered to be incredibly wise insights, but of course, forgot these immediately afterwards. I may very well have the Answer to Everything locked up in my mind - I intend to have a scribe on hand if ever I should have another opportunity. On the other hand, I have never had roosterkoek. (I hope that doesn't make me a bad person.) I loved the story of the etymology of Daggaboer. My dad (originally from Napier, but now long departed, from life I mean, not Napier) told the story of Sandy's Glen near Napier. Apparently it was known (yonks ago) as Sondaarsvlei. An Englisk mapmaker asked a local what the area was called and he answered him, but with a strong "brei", so it sounded like Sondagsvlei. Back in CT the mapmaker translated this to Sunday's Glen. Over the year this changed in the local "volksmond" to Sandy's Glen - Sandy being the name of one of the locals, and when new maps were subsequently made, this is what appeared as the proper name. No idea if this story is true, but it is rather lovely!
Hi from Kathy who loved your mom's Open garden... My maiden name is Trollip, a descendant of William Trollip who settled on the farm Daggaboer in 1839. I checked in a book on the Trollips, written by Doris Trollip Gordon, re the origin of the name. The friendly parting words "Goodbye, Farmer" or in Afrikaans, "Dag,ou Boer" is one theory. The other is that, "many years before, the farm had been owned by an old Boer farmer, who had made capital out of the abundant dagga which grew on the farm, exchanging it for ivory, cattle and skins brought in barter by the vagrant Hottentots." I LOVE any postings with pictures of the Karoo - my home before I moved to cape Town. (On another Trollip family farm, not Daggaboer.)What a place!!
Haha Anairam - ja nee. I admit to finding the long intense monologues of some people high on pot intensely boring. They are just amazed at something they've just discovered but, to the unbaked, the idea is simply deeply tedious blablabla. Hi Kathy - I would not mind a home in the Karoo. Lucky you. It feels like home. Lucky you, and it's a small white world, yes? Your theories match Charl's.

Daggaboy Safaris
Daggaboy Safaris is based in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Named after the Limpopo River, a 1000 mile river that spans South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. Daggaboy guests stay at Bua Nnete Lodge in Tom Burke, a small town 6 miles from the Botswana border.
To book with Daggaboy Safaris, click or call Gerhard at 855-824-1149
Daggaboy Safaris carefully plans each hunt according to each hunters specific needs. They specialize in both rifle and bow hunting for many different trophy species. Typically hunts are a minimum of 7 to 10 days, but more time affords more hunting and sight seeing oportunities. While a successful hunt is important, safety is the top priority and Daggaboy Safaris provides safe transport for our clients to and from the airport. The lodge is situated in a very safe area and hunters find that there is nothing to be concerned about.
Bow hunting safaris are undertaken throughout the year but we recommend the drier months (May – October) as the game is more concentrated around watering holes and the chances of success improve dramatically. Bow hunting is done from established blinds as well as the walk and stalk method.
Excellent big game fishing is available on the coast of South Africa and Daggaboy Safaris can help with those arrangements as well. For the serious fresh water fisherman, excellent inland fishing exists for tiger fish, large catfish and many other species.
Inoculations are not required for South Africa however if a hunter is to hunt in the Northern Province, Zululand, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique they recommend malaria prophylactics be taken. Please consult your pharmacist or doctor on the subject.
South Africa has developed into one of the most popular hunting destinations in Africa. It can be hard to chose who to hunt with, but rest assured that Daggaboy Safaris prides themselves on a high degree of professionalism while targeting the largest variety of trophy species, including all of the big five.
Daggaboy Safaris ensures that you receive the best service and that all your needs are taken care of. You will be treated with the greatest respect and responsibility. Book your next adventure!

Welcome to Daggaboy Safaris
Tom burke, limpopo, south africa.
“Daggaboy” meaning Buffalo Bull, was born through the inspiration of Hunting Outfitter and Professional Hunter Gerhard Vos .
Gerhard grew up on a hunting farm in South- Africa where he was also raised to be a guide from the age of 12. For the following 20 years he guided several hundred local and international hunters. Growing up in a Christian family, he was taught that hunting is not only about killing animals but rather hunt to utilize and conserve.

Daggaboy Safaris carefully plans your hunt according to your specific needs. We specialize in both rifle and bow hunting. For the observer we can organize a shopping trip, elephant back safari or a visit to a white lion breeding facility. The ladies can relax in the nearby "in Africa" spa with very relaxing atmosphere.
Safety is one of our top priorities. Safe transport for our clients from the airport and back are well organized. Ourlodge is situated in a very safe area and we can honestly say that there is nothing to be concerned about.

Dagga Boy with The Kosher Safari
One of the Big 5 is the Cape Buffalo. These large animals seem peaceful and content to be left alone so why are they part of the Big 5?
One of the reasons given is because of the Dagga Boy. Dagga means mud and these lone males often wallow in the mud. These males are no longer with the herd because they have been forced out of the herd by younger males. Because of their age they are also often in pain with wounds and covering them in mud alleviates the pain for them.
What to do if confronted
If you ever come across a lone bull in the wild, be prepared for this is a very dangerous experience, even if you are in a car or game vehicle. The buffalos seem tame but their temper can flair up with or without any provocation. The lone bull is however a lot worse because they are known to hunt down predators, and there are many accounts of hunters having been killed by the Dagga Boy. He may charge at you without warning. These buffalos were notorious from circling around and attacking the hunter. Their motto seems to be “attack is the best for of defense”. If you do confront one keep as still as possible and try back away as quietly as possible. You can find refuge up a tree, but it is unlikely you can outrun it as it charges at 56km per hour!
Find out more about one persons serious encounter here . And make sure to read about the rest of the big 5 here.
At The Kosher Safari we have thankfully not had any encounters with these lone bulls yet, however some of or guides have!
We're not around right now. But you can send us an email and we'll get back to you, asap.

These solitary older male buffalos are sometimes referred to as "Dagga Boys". The word dagga comes from one of the African languages which means mud. These buffalo are normally the ones that have been forced out of the herd by the younger ones. We stopped there for a long time giving my guest's the opportunity to take lots of pictures.
