Best Portable Refrigerators For Travel

No, Mini-fridge power requirements vary depending on refrigeration capacity and manufacturer, however, the majority of products need between 50 and 100 watts of power.

There should be no problems as long as your generator has a larger wattage rating than your refrigerator. To keep your refrigerator and freezer functioning properly, many experts advise using a generator that generates at least 2,000 watts of starting power.

Below are some basic and important points to consider while buying a portable refrigerator for RV travel, camping, and traveling.

  • Size : The mini fridge is obviously much smaller than a typical refrigerator in size. However, determining the ideal mini-fridge size relies on its intended usage. A regular-sized mini fridge would be a waste of money and storage if you only wanted to use it for cooling drinks. Instead, you could purchase a mini fridge that is smaller and includes racks specifically for cooling drinks.
  • Energy Efficiency : Dometic CFX3 refrigerators are the most effective ones we’ve identified, according to our study. The CFX3 45L draws an absurdly low 0.68A per hour on average, according to Dometic’s own tests (90°F ambient temperature with the fridge set to 39°F). It is reasonable to conclude that this 12-volt refrigerator is exceptionally efficient because owners typically report power usage at less than 1A per hour, which is consistent with Dometic’s figures.
  • Price and Overall Value : You must prepare your budget before you do anything else. You may compare the prices of several products online and choose the one that best fits your needs and budget.  we suggest you get a high-quality item if you don’t want it to break down after one or two years.
  • Warranty and Reliability : Any electrical appliance has a warranty as a critical component that you cannot overlook. What if your tiny fridge begins to experience some problems? In that case, you would need to purchase a mini fridge with a guarantee to avoid having to pay to have it fixed.
  • Noise : After some time, certain tiny refrigerators become very noisy. Make sure you double-check the placement of the mini-fridge. If it is not put on a level surface, it can sometimes generate noise.
  • Weight : Is this appliance heavy enough to lift into and out of small spaces? Will you transport it to a far-off location, or will it remain in your truck at all times?
  • Extra Feature: Although not found in every portable fridge, these features are present in some. The ability to defrost your refrigerator automatically even if you forget is a useful function. Some mini refrigerators are made to look like cans, which is highly appealing. Some mini fridges also come with alarms and 3D doors on the market.

Product Description

Koolatron P20 12V Compact Electric Cooler and Warmer (18 Quarts/17 Liters)

Coolers are usually large and unwieldy, which is why Koolatron developed the Compact Kooler, specially designed to fit in the snug spaces behind the seats of many cars, trucks, and vans. Like many of Koolatron's coolers, this unit features a 12-volt cooling system that plugs into a car's cigarette lighter. The cooler's motor blows cold air over your food and beverages, keeping them 40 degrees F cooler than the outside temperature. The cooler also doubles as a warmer, if you'd rather keep the contents toasty. Outside of the car or truck, the cooler is still versatile, with a swinging, foldaway handle for easy portage and a latchless lid that opens with one hand. Other handy features include a convenient cord wrap and a unique storage spot for the unplugged cigarette lighter. Despite the unit's compact size and weight (only 9 pounds), it can still hold up to 23 12-ounce soft drinks. --Rivers Janssen

Ice, ice baby. That seems to be the motto for anyone on a road trip with a cooler of partially melted ice rattling around cans of your favorite beverage. Coolers are one of the most common pieces of road trip travel gear. And it’s also one of the most annoying.

Even the best “premium” cooler from a big-box retailer couldn’t keep ice frozen for more than a few hours. By the end of every road trip day, the chunks were converted into moderately chilled water. Labels peeled from bottles and seeped into cheap food containers.

What. A. Mess.

So, after years of road tripping with cheap soft-sided coolers, cheap hard-sided coolers, and no-name gas station coolers bought on the fly, I finally decided to invest in the last road trip cooler I’ll ever buy.

But first, I had to do some research. And this is what I found. A collection of best coolers for road trips. And the most surprising thing I tested was a cooler that never needs ice.

YETI Tundra 45 Cooler

Out of the three types of coolers – soft-sided, hard-sided, and 12v – avoid the soft-sided coolers on a road trip. This type of cooler has the least insulation and typically only keeps ice frozen for a day or less.

12V coolers are wonderful because you never have to worry about buying a $3 bag of ice at a gas station to keep the contents chilled. However, the downside is that a 12V cooler only operates when the vehicle is running. Insulation helps keep the contents chilled while the vehicle is turned off, but only for short periods – maybe only hours.

The best type of cooler for road trips is a hard-sided cooler. These feature the most insulation of any type of cooler and can keep ice frozen for days. They are stackable, making it easier to pack in the car for a road trip.

Any manufacturer hesitates to definitively claim how long ice can stay frozen in their coolers. Instead, they will admit it can vary because of several factors – air temperature, quality of the ice, and initial temperature of the contents.

But there are some things you can do to get the best results out of a cooler of any type.

  • Refrigerate the contents overnight before placing them in the cooler.
  • Don’t overpack the cooler. For any times that don’t require refrigeration, only pack what you need until you can find ice again.
  • Use quality ice. Ice vending machines at hotels frequently have weak ice that feels wet to the touch – this kind of ice will melt faster. Five-pound bags of ice at gas stations are usually the best kind of ice. Dig to the bottom to find the best bag of ice.
  • Drain warm water from the cooler before filling it with ice. But leave the cold water – this can help chill the empty spaces between contents.
  • Pack the cooler with ice. Any empty space inside a cooler means warm air, and warm air will melt the ice faster. Pack every cubic inch possible with ice.
  • Open the cooler as infrequently as possible and immediately close the lid.
  • Store the cooler somewhere inside your vehicle out of direct sunlight.
  • Don’t leave the cooler in the car overnight if the outdoor overnight low is higher than your hotel room. Bringing the cooler into the air-conditioned room will help keep the cooler itself chilled and keeps your ice frozen for longer periods.

The Roadie 24 is the perfect road trip cooler that can fit in the backseat’s floor, hold enough food and drinks for up to four people for two days, and keeps ice frozen for 3-5 days.

Founded in 2006, YETI is a Texas-based company known for making coolers that keep ice frozen with thick insulation and a hefty price. Their lineup includes dozens of coolers ranging from small soft sided lunch boxes to enormous deck boxes for boats. Their Roadie lineup includes the Roadie 48 and Roadie 60 , both wheeled coolers, but the best cooler for road trips is the Roadie 24 .

The Roadie 24 is 17-inches wide and 14-inches deep which means it can fit in the floor of the backseat in most cars. The lid features a gasket for an airtight, leak-proof seal and quick-release latches. The integrated strap also makes it easy to carry the cooler between the car and hotel on lengthy road trips.

YETI’s legendary pressure-injected polyurethane insulation keeps ice frozen in the Roadie 24 for about 3-5 days. It has a 24-liter capacity that holds 18 cans with a 2:1 ratio of ice to cans. Ideally, you could do a 1:1 ratio with 24 cans. Interestingly, the Roadie 24 can hold most wine bottles with an interior height of 13.3 inches.

Pick up a few add-ons to make the most of the Roadie 24. The YETI Basket Accessory is a clear plastic tray 4-inches deep and half the width of the cooler, allowing you to keep food out of the melted ice. The YETI Thin ICE is a reusable freezer block that replaces the need for ice and can be frozen overnight in hotel mini fridges.

Durable hard shell

Excellent insulation

Easy to open the lid

Carrying strap is too short

This ice chest is one of the least expensive on this list and includes some great features for the price like a rugged hard shell, easy carry handle, and decent insulation to keep ice frozen for about 2-4 days.

Igloo has been making coolers in Texas since 1947, and their first all-plastic cooler debuted in 1962. The Igloo 25-Quart BMX Ice Chest is one of the latest innovations for long road trips in tough conditions.

The ice chest is compact, measuring about 13-inches deep and 20-inches wide, so it fits in the floor behind the front seats. It’s built tough with stainless steel hinge rods on the handle and rubberized T-latches on the lid. And the Igloo’s iconic swing handle makes it easy to grab the cooler and go between hotel rooms and destinations on road trips.

The blow-molded construction features 20% thicker insulation for greater performance. The cooler can keep ice frozen form about 3-4 days. The 23-liter capacity can hold about 18 cans with a 2:1 ratio of ice, the necessary ratio to keep this budget cooler’s contents chilled.

And if the 23 liters isn’t big enough for your road trip, try the Igloo BMX 52-Quart or 72-Quart , both with pivoting side handles for carrying.

Easy to carry with the swinging handle

Good capacity for the price

Rubberized latches eventually break

This electric fridge ends the dependency on daily bags of ice and keeps the contents perfectly chilled to a temperature you can set through a smartphone app, but it doesn’t perform well while unpowered and is a beast to carry into a hotel room.

Dometic has become the go-to brand for 12V fridges in DIY campervans and overlanding vehicles – and for a good reason. Their lineup ranges from the 25-liter to an impressive 100-liter , but the Dometic 35-liter Portable Refrigerator is the best 12V fridge for road trips.

Dometic fridges feature a rugged exterior meant for long haul uses in tough conditions. The additional Protective Cover wraps the fridge in a heavy-duty 1200D nylon that adds protection to your investment for road trips. With or without the cover, the lid pivots open from a sturdy latch, making it easy to quickly access all the contents. It’s large, though, taking up a 27-inch long and 16-inch wide footprint somewhere in your car.

Inside, the fridge has a 35-liter capacity in a large compartment at the front and a shallow shelf at the back that sits on top of the motor. The fridge can hold 50 cans since ice is never needed. The temperature can be manually set using the digital display on the front of the fridge or with a smartphone connected through their app.

The downside to Dometic comes when the power is turned off. The fridge weighs 37 pounds unloaded, which already makes it difficult to carry into hotel rooms. But if you can manage, the fridges include a household power adapter so you can keep it going all night.

Never needs ice

Difficult to carry

This cooler is built tough using Pelican’s impressive designs for durable travel cases. Although the cooler’s shape is awkward for packing in the car and it’s difficult to carry, the cooler can keep ice frozen for days and the sloped drain makes cleanup easy.

In 1976, David and Arline Parker founded a mail-order home business to develop special equipment for scuba divers. One of their first products was a hard-shell waterproof case – the product the brand is most popular known for making. In 2013, the new consumer division added coolers, backpacks, and flashlights to their lineup.

The Pelican Elite lineup of coolers includes the 8 Quart Personal Cooler and 20 Quart Elite , both descent coolers for solo road trips. But the best cooler for road trips in their lineup is the Pelican Elite 30 Quart Cooler .

Pelican applied their impressive durability to the cooler’s design with a rugged exterior that can withstand the toughest punishment. The company offers a lifetime guarantee that if you manage to break it, they’ll replace it. The anti-sheer hinges and durable latches make it easy to open the cooler while also providing a great seal. And the four integrated cup holders on the lid’s top feature drain holes.

Two inches of foam inside the polypropylene shell provide adequate insulation to keep ice frozen for about 3-4 days. The interior has a 28-liter capacity which is enough for 22 cans with a 2:1 ratio of ice. The drain plug features a sloped channel so the water can drain without tilting the cooler.

If the 28-liter capacity is too small for your road trip needs, the Pelican 70 Quart Elite Cooler has more than twice the capacity with the same features. The additional Pelican Cooler Ice Pack can eliminate the need for buying bags of ice – the 2-inch wide reusable ice pack can be frozen overnight in a hotel’s mini fridge. And the additional Pelican Elite Cooler Wire Basket can keep food out of the sloshy melted ice.

Difficult to carry with the integrated handles

Awkward size for packing in a car

The KULA 5 was built specifically for Bote’s lineup of paddleboards, but the bucket-sized cooler is also great for solo road trippers who want something portable and easy to carry.

After Corey and Magda Cooper moved to Destin, Florida, they fell in love with paddleboarding. But when they couldn’t find a decent paddleboard in the Panhandle region, they decided to make their own. A few years after founding BOTE, they expanded their lineup of paddleboards and kayaks to include coolers.

The KULA 5 “combines the best parts of a cooler with a five-gallon bucket.” Made from ABS plastic, the lightweight but durable cooler also serves as a seat. The swinging handle features a padded grip to make it easy to carry. The newest innovation is Magnepod – integrated magnets in many of the products that allows tumblers, coolers, and paddleboards to securely fasten to each other.

The insulation keeps ice frozen for about 1-2 days. The interior of the 19-liter cooler is small – 11.75-inches wide and 11-inches tall. It has capacity for about 15 cans with moderate ice. And the round interior works best with cans – square containers quickly take up lots of room. The lid is fastened with a rubberized T-latch and the leak-proof gasket prevents accidental spills in the car.

Lightweight

Small capacity

Expensive vs larger coolers

Poor insulation

Best for solo road trippers only

This budget-friendly cooler has a large capacity and durable design, but it lacks any latches on the lid. It’s still a great cooler for a road trip.

Founded in 1900 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, Coleman is a brand synonymous with budget-friendly outdoor recreational equipment like tents, camp furniture, cookware, and coolers. Their impressive lineup of coolers ranges from inexpensive day trip options to road trip worthy insulated behemoths.

The Coleman 316 Series 52-Quart Cooler is their best cooler for road trips. The blow-molded design is tough, and the cooler can even function as a seat with a 250-pound capacity. The pivoting side handles make it easy for one or two people to carry the cooler. And integrated cup holders on the lid with drainage make it easy to keep your drinks nearby.

The 49-liter capacity can hold up to 80 cans with moderate ice. Thick insulation can keep the ice frozen for about 2-3 days. A drain hole makes it easy to drain the water, but you’ll have to tip the cooler to get it all out.

The cooler is 26-inches long, 15-inches deep, and 17-inches tall. It’s easy to pack into the car for a road trip. But if the 80-can capacity isn’t enough, you can also get the 70-quart , 120-quart , and 150-quart sizes. And their lineup of rolling coolers includes the 62-quart and 100-quart .

Durable design

No latches on the lid

Lid won’t stay open without support

Heavy when fully loaded

This 12V fridge is less expensive than its competitor, Dometic, but it stands up to the challenge with decent performance, great capacity, and the ability to plug into a 12V accessory outlet or household outlet.

Euhomy is a small U.S.-based manufacturer of countertop ice makers and portable refrigerators. Most of their products are made in China, but don’t let that discourage you from considering this budget-friendly alternative to Dometic.

The Euhomy 37-Quart 12V Refrigerator features a durable plastic construction with integrated handles. The lid is fastened with a latch and swings open from the back, providing quick and easy access to the contents. The fridge is about 14″ wide and 27″ long, taking up a small footprint in your car.

The fridge’s temperature can be set manually using the digital display on the front or with a smartphone through an app. The interior is divided into two compartments: a 2/3 front compartment with a 14″ interior height and a 1/3 rear compartment with less than half that height. The compartments act like a freezer and fridge with a 10-degree difference. The included wire rack makes it easy to remove all the contents at once. The 35-liter capacity can hold about 60 cans and the front compartment is tall enough for wine bottles or two-liter bottles.

But like other 12V fridges, this one fails when the power is turned off. Inside a hot car, the poor insulation means the contents’ temps will soar in about 3-4 hours. But the fridge includes a household power adapter, so if you carry it into the hotel room, you can plug it in overnight.

Inexpensive vs competitors

Debuting in 2008, the YETI Tundra features the impressive insulation that made the company popular for keeping ice frozen. The durable design and integrated handles make this a great cooler for road trips.

Founded in 2006, YETI is a Texas-based company known for making coolers that keep ice frozen with thick insulation and a hefty price. The Tundra series of coolers debuted in 2008 and is among their most popular, divided between carried coolers and rolling coolers. The YETI Tundra 45 Cooler is their best large cooler for road trips.

The Tundra features a durable plastic shell that can withstand the rigors of road tripping. The lid is fastened with rubberized T-latches that are easy to unfasten when you want to get inside. Measuring 16-inches wide and 25.5-inches long, it doesn’t take up too much footprint in the car.

3 inches of PermaFrost Insulation gives the cooler it’s famed insulating value. Ice stays frozen for about 3-5 days. The interior has a height of 11 inches so tall bottles, like wine or soda, can stand upright. The 33-liter capacity has room for 26 cans with a 2:1 ratio of ice, but you can get away with a 1:1 ratio and stuff about 35 cans into the cooler.

The cooler weighs 23 pounds when empty, so it gets heavy when fully loaded with food, drinks, and ice. Integrated handles in the molded exterior make it easy to get a grip. The Tundra also features integrated rope handles with a rubberized grip that makes it easy for two people to carry the cooler.

The Tundra 45 Haul is the wheeled version of the cooler – for an extra price. The solid tires are impact and puncture resistant and the curved aluminum handle folds down when not needed.

The Best Car Coolers and Portable Refrigerators for Your Next Road Trip

Chris Chase

Whether you’re striking out on a two-week camping trip or heading to the beach for a picnic, no outdoor adventure is complete without food and drink. That means you’ll need a cooler to keep your beverages chilled and food fresh. But even the best coolers can only keep things cold for so long. Eventually, your freezer packs will thaw out, and you’ll have to stock up on ice from the nearest gas station or convenience store.

What if there was a better way to keep your consumables cold without worrying about ice melting? Well, there is, and that’s by using an electric car cooler. These handy devices have a lot in common with the cooler you probably already have packed away with your camping gear. The difference is you can plug an electric cooler into your vehicle’s 12-volt power outlet, which will keep the things inside cool without the aid of ice. You can even use some of the more powerful electric coolers to make ice while you’re on the road or at the campground.

Some car coolers can do double duty and keep food warm, too, so you can be everyone’s best friend when you arrive at a fall picnic or backyard potluck with piping hot chili. You’ll find a lot of variety in the car cooler marketplace in terms of functionality and price.

For more information on the best car coolers and portable refrigerators for your car, refer to our table of contents.

None of the coolers on our list illustrate the phrase “you get what you pay for” better than this option from ICECO. You’ll pay more for this product, but for your money, you get a cooler that promises better performance and longevity than many other portable powered coolers.

This is a versatile cooler, boasting the flexibility to run on 12- or 24-volt DC current or 110- or 240-volt AC household power. While many of the other coolers we selected for our list are capable of keeping food and drinks chilled or frozen, this recommendation can be set to maintain a temperature anywhere between -7 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit. That means you can easily chill or freeze food that’s at room temperature when you load it up without space-hogging ice or freezer packs.

ICECO equips this cooler with a Secop compressor for fast cooling. You can also run this cooler in an eco mode that consumes less electricity and prolongs run time when you’re powering it with a battery.

With your purchase, ICECO includes an insulated protective bag and a 12-foot-long DC power cable. The compressor is warrantied for five years, and everything else is covered by a one-year warranty.

While its price won’t be suited to every budget, Setpower's option gets a nod from us for its 53-quart capacity, the most generous of any of the items in our list of the best car coolers.

To give you an idea of its size, Setpower says you can pack 70 soda cans, 42 pint-sized water bottles, or 12 wine bottles in the AJ50 variant. A wire storage basket lets you store delicate food separately from hard/heavy items. You can use this recommendation as a fridge/freezer as well as a cooler. Setpower says the compressor is powerful enough to chill or freeze food and drink from room temperature, and you can set the temperature to any point between 0 and 50 degrees F.

A 38-pound weight means you’ll get a bit of a workout moving this cooler around, but it has robust-looking carry handles at either end. Setpower sells this particular cooler with DC (12/24-volt) and AC (110/240-volt) power cables, so you can use this portable cooler at home just as easily as you would in your car or camper. An auto shut-off system with three settings lets you protect your vehicle’s battery when running this cooler with the engine turned off.

fridge for trips

Here's our recommendation for a basic cooler if you're shopping on a budget. While the first few items in our list are basically portable fridge-freezer units, this Ivation product is a simpler electric car cooler that will keep your food and drinks cool but not frozen.

This is a dual-power cooler that you can run on a 12-volt DC power source—like your vehicle’s cigarette lighter—or on 110-volt AC current with the included adapter for household outlets. Both adapters stow in convenient compartments built into the lid.

Ivation says this device will keep drinks as cool as 40 degrees F and can also keep food warm up to 130 degrees F. However, those are its only settings; it can’t be set to any temperatures in between those points. The company also says this option will work best if you load it with drinks or food that has already been chilled or warmed up. As some buyers have noted, it will take a long time to cool or heat items from ambient temperature.

While the cooler’s capacity is relatively modest, Ivation says it’s large enough to accommodate 2-liter soda bottles. This cooler weighs 10.6 pounds, so it’s relatively easy to move around even when loaded.

fridge for trips

Designed to look like an old-fashioned home refrigerator, AstroAI’s minifridge is tiny, measuring 10 inches high by 9.45 inches deep and 6.9 inches wide. Its 4-liter internal capacity is just large enough to accommodate six regular-size soda cans, and a weight of fewer than five pounds empty allows for easy transportation.

AstroAI says it designed this little fridge for more than just keeping drinks cold. It’s also ideal for storing cosmetics and skin care products, breast milk, and other items that are perishable at room temperature.

This cooler will take items from room temperature down to 37 degrees F in three hours, and you can also use it to keep food or drink hot at up to 150 degrees F. The company makes it clear this product is not designed to warm things up from ambient temperatures but claims your items will stay warm for hours after the device is turned off. Actual cooling and warming performance will vary somewhat depending on the ambient temperature.

This minifridge ships with a 12-volt DC cigarette lighter cable for use in your vehicle and a 110-volt AC adapter, so you can also plug it in at home or in your office.

fridge for trips

This option from Wagan is another lightweight cooler—it weighs a scant 8.7 pounds empty. Once loaded with food and drink it will obviously be heavier, but the included shoulder strap leaves your hands free for carrying other items.

This cooler’s design lends itself well to serving as a central console in a vehicle’s back seat and includes cupholders so your passengers can enjoy drinks on the road. Its capacity is 14 liters. While it’s advertised as a 12-volt cooler, Wagan sells an optional AC adapter that lets you plug it into a household power outlet. The standard 9-foot-long DC power cable connects to your vehicle’s cigarette lighter.

As with the Ivation cooler discussed above, this Wagan unit works best to keep your items cold or warm but is not designed to efficiently chill or heat your food and drink from room temperature. The company says this cooler's temperature range is 32 degrees F (the freezing point) to 140 degrees F. You can’t select any temperatures between those two points, but changing between cooling and warming modes is as simple as flipping a switch. Simple green and red LED indicators tell you at a glance which mode it is set to.

fridge for trips

The 36-liter Bodega car fridge is pricy, but it's less expensive than our Editor's Pick, yet it has four more liters capacity.

To put this model's capacity in perspective, Bodega claims it will hold 41 cans of cola, 21 bottles of water, or ( somewhat humorously) "13 bottles of red wine." The compressor-chilled cooler will operate on 12 volts from your car's cigarette lighter or power port, but it can also be powered by 120-volt or 240-volt current from a wall outlet. The refrigerated compartment includes a divider and independent temperature control for both areas via a phone app. According to the manufacturer, the contents can be chilled down to 4 degrees Fahrenheit. Wheels, interior lighting, and a drain hole are thoughtful touches.

Bodega offers models with a capacity greater than 36 liters which are correspondingly more expensive. The larger 53-liter Bodega seems to be the most widely available.

There were complaints from a few users; most cited poorly-written instructions. Others found that the unit was slow to cool when full. However, most small-capacity refrigerators perform better when maintaining the temperature of pre-chilled contents rather than chilling warm items, in all the Bodega clocked in with a respectable 85% positive customer rating.

fridge for trips

The 48-quart Koozam K-box electric cooler is one of the larger models reviewed here. It’s a thermoelectric cooler, which will keep pre-chilled items cold but won’t bring warm items down to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Like other similar coolers, it can maintain a warm environment too. A removable interior divider helps keep contents under control.

This model has built-in 6-foot power cords that connect with either 12-volt (cigarette lighter style) or 120-volt supplies. The K-Box weighs 17.1 pounds empty; there are wheels, but given their small size, we think they’re for positioning the cooler rather than rolling it over long distances.

Gripes about slow cooling and difficult maneuverability marred the otherwise favorable user experiences. The K-Box still managed 81% positive reviews. This model is markedly less expensive than the 53-quart Setpower AJ50 reviewed above, which earned an exemplary 91% positive rating.

If you want a cooler that can efficiently chill or freeze food and drink from room temperature, then you should choose one with a compressor, such as one of the products we placed at the top of our list.

A cooler with a compressor is effectively a portable fridge or freezer with proven and effective technology, but you won’t get it for cheap. The compressor itself is heavy, so any cooler equipped with one will be more difficult for you to pick up and move around.

A thermoelectric cooler is a simpler, less-expensive device that uses a scientific phenomenon called the Peltier effect to either generate heat, or absorb it and thereby provide a cooling effect. Thermoelectric cooling is less efficient than a compressor-based system, so it won’t do as good a job keeping your food chilled as a compressor-type cooler will. However, a thermoelectric cooler will be much less expensive than one with a compressor.

Yes, but whether you need to depends on the type of cooler you buy. If you choose one with a compressor-based cooling system, you won’t need to pack your food and drink in ice as these coolers are designed to be effective at chilling things down and keeping them at a set temperature.

However, if you buy a thermoelectric cooler, we recommend chilling or freezing your food and drinks ahead of time and then packing it in the cooler and turning it on. You can also pack your items in ice and the thermoelectric cooler function will keep the ice frozen for longer than in a regular cooler.

You can run an electric cooler plugged into your vehicle for as long as you want, so long as the vehicle is running, which keeps the battery charged.

When your vehicle is off, be careful not to leave the cooler running for too long because it will drain the battery after two to three hours, which can leave you stranded as the battery may not have enough power left in it to start the engine.

As far as your cooler is concerned, there isn’t much difference. All of these coolers in our list are designed to operate on 12-volt automotive DC power. The ones that can be plugged into a household outlet have adapters, like the one you use to plug a laptop computer into the wall to convert your home’s 110-volt AC power to the DC current the cooler requires.

Very few cars have lighters (although there are a few where it's still an option), but every car we've seen has the 12V port where a lighter once went, and most car accessories are powered with a 12V adaptor. The USB ports in most cars don't have enough power to run something like a cooler. USB-C is capable of much higher power delivery, but it hasn't been widely adopted in vehicles yet.

What’s the Best Portable Car or Van Fridge

The best portable electric fridge has to be the one that best suits your travel style and budget. Options are ranging from $20 to $1000 or more.

It all depends on the use you’re going to give it. You can start with an ice cooler fridge (decent) or a thermoelectric machine and then move on to a compressor (the best 12V portable refrigerators), and if you’re going to leave it fixed, you can choose a 3-way fridge.

As you can see, you have many options. If you’re traveling sporadically or just want to try it, you can choose a good quality cooler or thermoelectric that connects to your car’s 12V charger.

If you have a camper van with an installed electrical system with solar panels and an auxiliary battery , my recommendation is a 12V compressor refrigerator. Dometic ones are among my favorites and those of many van enthusiasts, but BougeRV it’s a great option for budget travelers conscious.

Compressor refrigerators can also serve as auxiliary fridges for your high-volume van or motorhome.

For traveling by car, the best refrigerators are thermoelectric ones that connect to the car’s cigarette lighter and do not require an electrical installation like a compressor refrigerator.

(Use the refrigerator connected to the car only with the car turned on.)

If you are going camping, you can choose a portable refrigerator that connects to the 220V electrical grid. This way, you will keep your drinks cold and your food well-preserved.

Different Types of Portable Refrigerators

There are different types of portable refrigerators for your car or camper van. Here’s the one that best suits your travel style and budget.

Portable 12V Compressor Fridge

12V compressor refrigerators are the most popular and the ones you’ll see most during your travels and for a good reason.

These refrigerators are designed for all types of vehicles, from 4×4 to boats, and are built with durability and efficiency in mind.

12V compressor refrigerators have highly efficient variable speed compressors that consume very little energy can be used as a refrigerator or freezer.

They come in various configurations, including chest, vertical, and dual-zone refrigerators/freezers – and usually have the ability to operate at an inclination of up to 30 degrees (other types of refrigerators must be kept perfectly level when operating).

This combination of features makes these refrigerators perfect for van life.

Although the compressor refrigerators are amazing, they have one drawback: the cost.

Portable 12V refrigerators are more expensive than other options, and that’s important to keep in mind. Since you’re going to need to add an auxiliary battery and a means to charge them (such as solar panels, 110/ 220V connection, or a switch to the vehicle alternator).

If your goal is to turn the van into a wheeled house, investing in a refrigerator with a high-quality 12V compressor is worth it.

Y por favor, no hagas como nosotros en nuestra primera furgo, y pongas una nevera de 220V con un inversor.

Lo único que vas a conseguir son dolores de cabeza y estropear (mucho) antes de tiempo la batería auxiliar.

Coolers: Refrigerators that Need Ice to Cool Down

This is the typical portable fridge we’ve all started with. They’re cheap, and you can buy them anywhere, and for it to cool things down, you have to put on ice.

Here you have very cheap options ($10 or $20, but they do not keep the cold long.

My recommendation is the ones that are around $50, like the Colemans . They have good insulation, and food can last you fresh food for two days.

Portable ice fridge

To not have to use so much ice, you can put frozen food, frozen water bottles, etc.

Choose those that have a water drain , so it’s easier to keep it clean and your food doesn’t rot.

And if you’re going to take it, for example, to the beach, choose one with wheels, they are much more comfortable and easy to carry.

Thermoelectric Fridges (Ideal for Cars)

Thermoelectric fridges are fine for short road trips and not-too-hot places.

Such refrigerators need a 12V connection but do not have the ability to cool below room temperature efficiently.

Although there are some that claim that they can cool 20ºC below room temperature, like the MobicoolQ40.

If what you’re looking for is something to keep your drinks or snacks cold during your road trips, then a portable thermoelectric fridge can meet your needs as long as you don’t travel to scorching places.

But if you’re looking for a fridge that really refrigerates your meals during your van or camping trips, then my recommendation is to choose 12V compressor refrigerators.

3-way Fridges (Not Portable)

Trivalent or 3-way refrigerators are the most commonly used in large-volume vans and RV or motorhomes. On our van, we have a 3-way Dometic fridge and a portable fridge; they are the perfect combination for long trips.

3-way fridges are fixed refrigerators that need a ventilation outlet from behind and operate at 12V, 220V (or 110V, depending on where you live), and propane.

It is very efficient when you connect it to propane or 110/ 220V. At 12V, it is only used when you are on route.

For us, it is the best option if you are going to keep it fixed in your van and if you have a propane installation, so you do not depend on going to campsites or areas with electricity.

It has very low consumption; a 13kg bottle can last you two months, using it every day.

Our fridge is the DOMETIC 5380, 80-litre, trivalent, propane-powered, 220V, and 12V.

The Fridge that Opens Above or in the Front

fridge for trips

You have two types of portable refrigerator, the ones that open above or the ones that open in the front (like the ones in the house, but in small).

You can find both models with the same compressors and features and think that you only have to choose the one you like the most.

But they have different advantages, especially if your idea is to use it as a portable fridge, you will find it more interesting than it opens up and now I tell you why.

Chest fridges (with the opening above) tend to be more efficient

Nevera Portatil BougeRV CRPRO30

Why? Part of the reason is that cold air naturally stays at the bottom.

With chest refrigerators, the door is at the top, which means that the cold air will accumulate at the bottom of the refrigerator, where it has nowhere to escape.

But with vertical refrigerators, the cold is preserved thanks to the insulation seal around the door. That’s why every time the door opens, the fridge loses cold.

Because food has a higher thermal density than air, most of the cold in any refrigerator is “stored” in food or drinks inside the refrigerator, so full refrigerators are much easier to keep cool than refrigerators with plenty of space.

And with the layout of the interior shelves of vertical-style refrigerators, you’re likely to end up with wasted empty space on top of your food.

Chest Refrigerators have More Capacity and are Easier to Organize

If you are used to a standard front-opening refrigerator like the one in your house or apartment, this can be a surprise.

How can it be more difficult to organize a front-opening refrigerator with shelves and drawers than a chest-type refrigerator that forces you to stack items on top of each other?

But in a smaller van refrigerator, empty space is a wasted space that makes the refrigerator compressor work harder (and consume more energy).

Even with the shelves, you still need to stack the items on top of each other, and still, you’re going to need to move the items to get to each other. And you’ll probably end up with a lot of empty air between the top of your food and the bottom of the next shelf.

All of this means wasted space with no real organizational gains.

And if your food moves inside the fridge while driving, you won’t have to worry about everything falling off when you open the door with a chest fridge.

That’s why we no longer buy beer bottles, and now we only buy cans…

Chest refrigerators are easy to carry and easy to accommodate inside your van. But it depends on the design of your camper van.

Before you decide on a portable chest or front-door refrigerator, take a look at your van and answer the following questions:

  • Where are you going to put the portable fridge?
  • Are you going to change the place inside your van?
  • Do you want to have it between driver and co-pilot seats?
  • Are you going to get it out of your van?

Electricity Needed for Your Portable Compressor Fridge

Running a 12V refrigerator in your camper van requires an electrical installation that consists of (at a minimum) a 12V power outlet connected to an auxiliary battery (not to the car or van battery) and a means to charge it.

But, how much battery capacity do you need?

Determining the Capacity of Your Auxiliary Battery

To calculate the battery capacity, you need to run your fridge reliably and first find the refrigerator’s average power consumption.

As an example, suppose our refrigerator consumes an average of 2.0 amps per hour.

Over the course of a day (24 hours), a refrigerator that consumes 2.0 amps per hour will consume 48 Ah of the battery.

Since you’re never going to want to drain your battery completely, we recommend that you take its power consumption and double it to determine battery capacity.

Therefore, you would need an auxiliary battery with a minimum capacity of 100 Ah in this example, plus additional capacity for your other electrical charges.

This is our case; we have a 100 Ah auxiliary battery, along with a 100W solar board. Also, a 220V connection allows us to charge the auxiliary battery, the car, and electronic devices.

What to Look for in a Portable 12V Compressor Fridge

Here’s a rundown of what you should look for when evaluating refrigerator options for your camper van:

12V compressor refrigerators can be quite expensive in general, but there is a wide range of prices between high-end brands and economical brands .

If your budget doesn’t allow you a range refrigerator, we recommend carefully analyzing the least expensive brands.

Just keep in mind that the fridge is an essential part of your camper van and road trips. It’s better to save a little more and buy something of good quality.

Indoor Capacity and Freezer Capabilities

How much fridge space do you need? Buying a portable camper fridge that’s too big means spending more than you need to and giving up more space in your van.

Furthermore, having a too-small refrigerator means shopping more often. Needs vary from person to person.

In our case, we have a DOMETIC 5380 refrigerator (80 liters) with enough space for a week of fresh food for both of us, a small freezer that works great, and space to put bottles and small food on the door.

Most 12V compressor refrigerators have the ability to function as either a refrigerator or a freezer . But if you need both at the same time, some brands offer fridges/freezers that have separate compartments for each.

Energy Efficiency and Compressor

To not connect to the mains too often, you have to have devices that are as efficient as possible.

Most 12V portable refrigerators on the market use the same highly efficient variable speed compressor, although some brands like Dometic/Waeco, Engel, and Whynter/Edgestar use their own units.

Exterior Dimensions and Weight

If you already have a designated place where you plan to place the refrigerator, you’ll want to make sure all the options you’re considering fit.

Not all brands have the same size; some are taller, others are wider, even if they have the same interior capacity.

And dimensions can be a determining factor in buying your portable fridge since it has to adjust to the configuration of your van.

Weight is another important factor; if you’re going to transport your fridge regularly, it better be lighter than if you’re going to leave it fixed most of the time.

Opening Direction

As mentioned above, this might seem like a minor consideration, but it can make a big difference in the configuration of your van.

Some refrigerators have lids hinged from the back, while others have lids with side hinges.

Side-hinged lids need less top free space to open completely, and since you’re looking into the refrigerator from the longer side, it can be easier to see and reach the content.

The best lid direction will depend on the specific configuration of your van.

Standard Features and Additional Features

fridge for trips

Most 12V portable refrigerators have the following standard features:

  • Ability to operate with an inclination of up to 30º.
  • LED lighting inside the refrigerator.
  • Floor drain plug for easy cleaning.
  • Low voltage cutting to protect your batteries.
  • Removable dividers and organizing baskets.
  • Separate dairy compartment.
  • Some refrigerators include more advanced features such as digital controls, remote readings, Wi-Fi apps, and additional accessories.

Warranty and reliability

Factory warranties give you some degree of security if something goes wrong and needs to be repaired or replaced.

Reputation is also a factor here. Danfoss compressors are known to be reliable, so refrigerators with this compressor are often a safe bet.

Dometic has an excellent reputation for reliability and support, and Engel’s Sawafuji spinning engine is legendary for running for decades without problems.

What are The Best 3-Way Fridges

Although this post is not focused on trivalent refrigerators, here are three options you should consider if you plan to install a trivalent refrigerator in your van or motorhome.

I propose three different sizes: 80, 60 and 40 liters. Chose the one that suits in your vehicle.

  • Dometic RM 5380 : the one we have, and we are very happy with it. If you have any questions or need more info about it, let me know.
  • Dometic CRX Pro 65
  • Dometic CRX 110E

As you can see, there are four different types of portable fridges to take away by car or camper van.

Depending on the service you want these refrigerators to give you, your budget, the space in your van if you travel by car, if you have an electrical installation and your travel style, you will choose one refrigerator or another.

In summary, choose a compressor refrigerator if you have an electrical installation in your camper van or as an auxiliary refrigerator in your large volume vehicle or motorhome

Choose a thermoelectric refrigerator for traveling by car and then connecting it to the electrical grid, at campsites, for example.

Choose three-way refrigerators if you are going to keep them fixed in your van or motorhome. And you have the necessary installation to get the most out of these refrigerators.

I hope this post has helped you choose your portable fridge to travel. If you have any questions, leave us a comment at the end of the post.

This Dometic refrigerator is a great alternative to classic ice chest coolers, especially in tiny RVs. When it comes to effective and portable freezers for long-distance excursions, it’s a game-changer. The tiny design can sustain a frigid temperature of -7 degrees Fahrenheit, which is colder than most typical mini-fridges.

Thanks, Cyrus for your comment about Dometic Refrigerator.

We couldn’t be happier with the 12 volt refrigerator from Dometic. This unit has kept our food fresh and dry all the way to Gettysburg and back to the southwestern United States.

If you have solar installed, it can run fine on a 12 volt deep cycle battery. However, you will need an insulating protective cover (sold separately) to ensure the device runs properly when on battery power.

The Best 12 Volt Refrigerators for Camping Trips & RV Travel

fridge for trips

Writen by Tom Hank

fridge for trips

Fact checked by Joseph Varney

An RV trip across the country will not be the same if you do not have the best 12 volt refrigerator in your travel trailer. To preserve your food and drink without consuming too much power, you need the best 12v refrigerator that your money can buy.

best 12 volt refrigerator

The problem with shopping for RV fridges is that you have many choices with various brands having different offerings. You also have to know how these travel refrigerators work and decide what you need from a fridge to make the best choice.

This article will teach you all you have to know to make shopping for a brand new 12-volt portable refrigerator a lot easier. You no longer have to worry about wasting your money on something that you will regret later.

Table of Contents

Best 12 Volt Refrigerator Reviews

1. alpicool c20 12-volt refrigerator.

fridge for trips

The best thing about the Alpicool C20 is that it works as a simple refrigerator and a freezer.

Since it already has a built-in freezer without ice, you can bring fresh meat with you on your trips. The temperature can reach -4°F, so you do not need to cook meat within 48 hours since it will not spoil quickly.

The Alpicool C20 is very compact at less than two feet long and half a foot wide. Thus, this model can fit any corner where there is access to the 12V or 24V RV system.

This unit only has 20 liters of storage space, but it can still hold quite many food and drinks, provided you utilize the space properly. If you are only using it as a freezer, then it can keep enough frozen foods capable of feeding an average-sized family for at least five days or so.

I am also pleased with its eco-mode feature. In truth, the fridge comes with three battery levels: low, medium, and high. It re-calibrates the settings to maintain the coolness of the contents while not consuming too much power.

  • Works as a cooler and a freezer, reaching -4℉
  • Compact design fits in a small corner
  • Comes with 20-liter storage for many food and drink
  • Has an eco-mode feature, which saves electricity
  • Lacks an interior thermometer

2. F40C4TMP Refrigerator Freezer

fridge for trips

The F40C4TMP 12-volt DC refrigerator is also a good investment. Its 18-liter capacity can hold uncooked meat and vegetables and your preferred beverages.

Another great thing about this portable mini refrigerator is that it can reach negative degree temperatures fast. The lowest that it can go down to is -7.6 Fahrenheit degrees. Moreover, it does not take that long for this refrigerator to reach negative numbers. In my case, it only took around an hour for it to get cold.

I also consider it as the best 12-volt fridge freezer model with its quiet operation at 45dB. You would think that something so powerful would be noisy, but it is silent, even when working at full tilt.

Another great benefit is that it does not consume too much power/electricity. The eco-mode of this 12-volt RV refrigerator is quite nice. Once it gets cold enough, you can turn on the eco-mode. Doing so will save you a lot of electricity in the long run.

Its sleek and smart design is another feature that appeals to many RV-ers. The product comes with a LED control panel that allows ease in operating.

  • Comes with an 18-liter capacity for food storage
  • Can reach -7.6 Fahrenheit degrees in a short time
  • Promotes a quiet operation at 45dB
  • Eco-mode saving energy
  • Sleek and smart LED control panel
  • Cannot freeze fresh food

3. Coleman Cooler 40-quart Cooler

fridge for trips

This portable 12-volt cooler from Coleman stands out with its capacity, which is twice as large as the standard fridges.

While measuring nearly 38 liters, it just weighs 18 pounds when empty. Thus, this product is both lightweight and compact, thus ideal for RV use.

This item is a heat-exchanger cooler, meaning its cooling capacity depends on the ambient temperature. It can keep the interior 40 degrees F cooler than the outside temperature. It helps keep your favorite beverages cool during your trips. This cooler can’t freeze its contents but can keep frozen foods ice solid for up to two days.

The Coleman Powerchill is not a true refrigerator but a thermoelectric cooler. The low-voltage heat exchanger it has draws out the heat from its interior. The actual size of the heat exchanger is not bigger than a matchbox, and it consumes little power. You don’t need to worry about draining batteries even if you will be using the unit on a truck or SUV.

Another neat detail that I like about this 12-volt refrigerator for trucks is that you can use it upright or position it like a chest cooler. Moreover, you can change the side where the door hinges from, making it easy to set in position and save on floor space.

  • Lightweight and portable construction for RV use
  • Impressive capacity at 38 liters
  • Keep frozen content from melting
  • Performs as a thermoelectric cooler, keeps interior temp 40°F colder than outside
  • Ideal for use as a chest or upright cooler
  • Requires shortening the long power cord

4. Igloo Iceless Thermoelectric Cooler

fridge for trips

Igloo thermoelectric cooler is among the portable thermoelectric coolers that are ideal for RV lives. This unit is the size of a standard cooler with a nice contoured handle, making it convenient for frequent traveling.

This product offers a 26-liter capacity for storing food and drink. You do not have to allocate space for the ice. It means you can carry more food and drink compared to a traditional cooler.

The insulation of this cooler is also top-notch, very much worthy of the Igloo brand. It works well in keeping the interior a 36 degrees F cooler than the temperature outside. Although it might not work quite well in hot climates, you will love using it when you live somewhere up north where the ambient temperature never gets too high.

  • Compact design with a handle for easy carrying
  • Offers a 26-liter capacity for storing food and drink
  • Incredible insulation and efficient heat transfer capabilities
  • Ideal for use on a 12v system
  • Plastic lid cannot handle much pressure

5. AstroAI 12-volt Refrigerator

fridge for trips

The AstroAI 55L refrigerator is a portable refrigerator for camping featuring a powerful compressor. Although the model is smaller than many household compressor refrigerators, it can keep our food and drink fresh for a long time.

Another great thing about this product is its impressive storage capacity. This little fridge has a capacity of 55L, which can carry up to 24 cans of your favorite beverages. It is a lot considering the compact size of the unit itself. If you have a large family who loves long RV trips, this fridge can offer the utmost convenience.

More importantly, this one can reach around -4 degrees F, roughly the same as what most household compressor refrigerators can do. The smaller size of this fridge also makes it even better as it can get cold quickly.

Moreover, there is an easy-to-read illuminated LCD screen on the lid. It has a control panel that allows you to change the temperature and other settings. The settings are also self-explanatory and readable.

You can easily move this fridge after packing it with many foods and drinks due to its convenient handle design.

To deliver ultimate safety for RV-owners, the manufacturer adds an extension cord with a ceramic fuse. With that, it protects from overloaded or short circuits.

  • Has a small yet powerful compressor
  • Provides a capacity of 55 liters
  • Can reach negative temperatures at -4°F
  • Features an easy-to-understand control panel
  • Comes with a convenient handle
  • Adds extension cord to avoid overloaded or short circuits
  • Produces a little noise after a while

6. COSTWAY Car Refrigerator

fridge for trips

Another portable device that works well with the 12V system on your RV is the Costway refrigerator. As expected, it can reach a temperature as low as -4 degrees F. So, if you will be taking fresh meat and fish with you on your trips, then this functional freezer will help you out.

The Costway mini fridge with freezer also scored a lot of points in the energy consumption department. This 12v compressor fridge draws less amperage than some thermoelectric coolers out there, drawing around 45 watts of power. If you plan to run a portable refrigerator on solar power, this unit is the best choice.

The storage capacity of this 12v compressor fridge is also impressive. You can easily fit more than 70 12-oz cans of your favorite beverage inside the cooler without any problem. There are also circular indents on the floor and lid of the cooler, so you can easily fit bottles of wine or champagne inside without having to tilt them.

Also, its convenience is offered in its design of separate fridge and freezing compartments. Thus, you can store your drink and food at different temperatures for specific purposes.

  • Can reach a temperature as low as -4 degrees F
  • Energy-efficient even on standard operation setting, drawing 45 watts only
  • Huge storage capacity loading 70 12-oz cans
  • Convenient design of separate fridge and freezing compartments
  • Brittle plastic lid that might bend under heavy objects

7. Dometic CFX28 12-volt Cooler

fridge for trips

This Dometic fridge is an excellent replacement for traditional ice chest coolers, especially for small-sized RVs. It is truly a game-changer when it comes to functional and portable freezers for far-away trips. The compact design can maintain a cold temperature of -7 °F, lower than most standard mini-fridges available.

I am also delighted that this Dometic 12-volt refrigerator can run on both AC and DC power sources. With that, I do not have to worry about running wires through the walls as I can use the 12v lighter outlet. It means no need to burden the AC inverter of the RV and drain its batteries in the process.

This Dometic fridge also comes with a low voltage cutoff switch. This feature will monitor the amount of charge your battery still has left. It will automatically turn off the 12-volt portable freezer and leave you with more than enough juice to start the engine. It keeps your batteries in top shape as you will not constantly be draining them.

I also like how this mini car refrigerator has separate compartments for refrigerating and freezing. It is great if you will be storing vegetables and meats without worrying about them getting freezer burn. Moreover, you can set it so that both compartments would be freezers or both refrigerators, increasing the utility for such a small appliance.

  • A compact yet functional design to replace traditional ice chest coolers
  • Can get as cold as -7 degrees F
  • Runs on both AC and DC power source
  • Comes with a low voltage battery protection
  • Separate compartments for freezing and cooling
  • The lighter plug is not compatible with some outlets

8. Whynter FM-45G Refrigerator

fridge for trips

The first thing I notice about the Whynter FM-45G portable refrigerator is its wall thickness. Such incredible insulation allows the fridge to preserve the coldness of its contents for many hours, even when unplugged.

This fridge comes with powder-coated steel construction that ensures long-lasting use. It has a lid and hinges that feel solid, preventing them from wiggling even when forced. The front latch is robust, allowing it to stay closed even during a bumpy ride.

I am also impressed with the rubber feet integrated into this fridge. I find them nice touches as they prevent the cooler from slipping and sliding all over the RV floor.

Another benefit of this unit is the presence of two wire baskets. These baskets are like dividers that keep specific kinds of foods separate from each other.

It also has excellent energy-efficiency. Operating the refrigerator on the low mode will cause it to draw just a little over 35 watts of power. It is quite a small power draw, especially for a cooler that is this size.

  • Excellently insulated for retaining coolness when power is off
  • Boasts of a low energy draw at only 35 watts
  • Coated steel construction featuring a solid lid, hinges, and front latch
  • Features rubber feet that prevent the unit from slipping on the floor
  • Two baskets as dividers to keep separate food kinds
  • Heavier than standard portable fridges

9. Arb Portable Fridge Freezer

fridge for trips

This combination fridge/freezer/cooler with a storage space of 47 liters, one of the largest coolers for RV uses. Since it is a 12-volt cooler refrigerator, you can utilize its large capacity, which is not the case for traditional coolers.

The overall build quality of ARB fridges is robust enough to withstand break and crack. It consists of quite sturdy handles that are still comfortable to use. The hinges are also quite strong, making sure to stay in their place no matter how many times you open and close the lid.

I am also happy with its plastic body as it is quite thick and well-insulated. It can receive a couple of good smacks and still end up unscathed.

Speaking of insulation, it is one of the best insulated portable fridges. Even when left unplugged, it can keep its contents nice and cold, making it a great fridge that saves energy.

This portable refrigerator also runs quietly. At maximum settings, the compressor and the refrigerator fan will only register 50 decibels. The humming will still be slightly audible, but you would not even know if it runs without the indicator lights.

Moreover, there is an easy-to-use drain. Paired with basket dividers, you can easily organize foods and clean up the interiors.

  • Has a large storage capacity at 47 liters
  • Well-insulated as it keeps contents cold even when unplugged
  • Quiet operation at 50 decibels
  • Durably built with sturdy handles and hinges
  • Easy-to-use drain for cleaning purpose
  • Features basket dividers to separate food and drink
  • Quite heavy and needs the mounting plate to prevent it from moving

10. Aspenora Portable Freezer Fridge

fridge for trips

With its compact design, this portable fridge has a 35-liter capacity. Its storage interior has two sections – a large freezer section and a smaller one just to keep your food chilled and fresh. You can, therefore, use this fridge for more than your favorite drinks.

I like the control panel, which is highly intuitive. Aside from being extremely useful when setting the internal temperature, you can also adjust other settings. For instance, the Aspenora 37-quart portable 12-volt cooler and freezer allows you to choose between three levels: low, medium, and high. The highest level will turn off the fridge when the battery voltage drops below the upper limit.

Another nice feature I like is the lock button. This specific feature prevents you from accidentally adjusting the thermostat settings, or worse, turning off the unit. Plus, the added USB outlet allows you to charge your smartphones or tablets with ease.

It is impressive how this portable fridge can quickly cool down, starting from room temperature. When totally empty, it will take less than an hour for the fridge to get to the freezing point of water.

The walls and lid are also efficiently insulated. When unplugged, it retains its internal temperature for at least 10 hours and will go down incrementally for each day it is without power.

  • Large capacity at 35 liters, yet compact
  • Adjusts among low, medium, and high levels
  • Features an intuitive backlit, LED touchscreen console
  • Cools down to freezing temperatures in less than an hour
  • Maintain cold temperatures for 10 hours after unplugged
  • Has an USB outlet to charge your smartphones or tablets
  • Slightly inaccurate external temperature display

11. JOYTUTUS Portable Refrigerator

fridge for trips

The Joytutus 26-quart 12v electric-powered portable refrigerator offers a rapid-cooling capability. Thanks to its heavy-duty aluminum evaporator, it only takes fifteen minutes for this fridge to drop from 77 to 32 ° F.

An excellent detail that I truly appreciate in this portable refrigerator is the non-slip mat. This small detail keeps the fridge from slipping and sliding on the RV floor.

I am also glad that it works on both AC and DC power sources with its own adapter. I find it useful not only during road trips but also in keeping my beverages cold while working in the garage or grilling in the backyard.

Another remarkable benefit is that it is small and compact enough to fit on the front passenger seat, behind the driver’s seat, and on the trunk of any sedan.

Despite being compact, it still has a relatively large storage compartment with a 25-liter capacity. It can even hold 25-30 regular-sized beverage cans. Such capaciry is more than enough for a rip-roaring time with your friends or entire-weekend garage projects.

  • Heavy-duty aluminum evaporator to quickly cool to freezing temperatures
  • Features a non-slip mat to stay put on bumpy rides
  • A small and compact design
  • Can work on DC or AC power source with available adaptor
  • Provides 25-liter capacity for drink and food
  • Not that efficient insulation

12. Colzer Portable Refrigerator

fridge for trips

This Colzer portable freezer can work both on 12V and 24V DC systems, making it the best for tailgate parties.

This model’s compressor is efficient as it can reach negative temperatures, reaching -4°F.Paired up with the Quick Cool mode, it only takes less than an hour to go from room temperature to negative degrees. What I usually do is turn on the Quick Cool for an hour and then switch it to eco-mode to save a lot of electricity.

I am also pleased to receive a 110V AC adapter in this package, allowing me to plug it into any regular home power outlet. It is an excellent companion, making everything you will need to be within easy reach.

Furthermore, it has a voltage protection structure with three levels of adjustment. As a result, we can avoid draining our RV batteries while driving on the road.

Regarding its capacity, the 40-liter fridge is ideal for storing various stuff, from food, drinks to necessary cosmetic products or medicine. Thus, you can rely on its high-tech compressor and large storage space to travel on your RV.

  • Has a quick cool function, reaching negative temperatures
  • Features an eco mode for saving energy
  • Works on both 12V and 24V DC power source
  • Has a voltage protection structure with three levels of adjustment
  • 40-liter fridge for storing food, drinks, cosmetic products, or medicine
  • The handle is not foldable

Best 12 Volt Refrigerators Buying Guide

best-12v-refrigerator

There is nothing better than cracking open a cold drink after a long day on the road and setting up camp at your destination. However, things will go downhill real fast when your refrigerator no longer works the way it used to, and it chose the most inopportune time to decide that it no longer works.

If you are new when it comes to shopping for the right 12-volt refrigerator for RVs, here are some factors you need to consider:

Price – RV refrigerators can be expensive. There are even high-end brands that can run you up a couple of thousand dollars each. If you do not have the budget for the high-end models, you do not have to settle for a cheap cooler to tithe you over until you save enough money. There are excellent mid-range to lower-end models that work well.

The trick here is to avoid setting a too-low budget that you have no choice other than to get the cheapest refrigerators you can find. Doing so will only lead to regrets later as they usually do not last quite as long. You should check as many 12-volt refrigerator reviews as you can to get an idea of the product’s value.

Set a budget that will at least let you take your pick from the mid-range and maybe even some of the more affordable high-end brands of refrigerators. This way, you will get the best 12-volt fridge freezer that will work well and not break the bank.

Capacity – How much refrigerator space do you need? Buying a fridge wastes your money on something that will not run at near its capabilities. But, you may also be getting something that is too big for your RV.

If your old refrigerator provided enough space, then you should get a replacement that is the same size as that. Now, if you have a rather large family and need something bigger, make sure that you have enough space in your RV kitchen.

Also, ensure that the provided space is big enough for the fridge you plan to buy. If you need to make space for the new appliance, you need to factor in the cost for that.

Energy-efficiency and compressor model – Suppose you will be living in your RV for the better part of the year. Then, your appliances, including the refrigerator, should be energy-efficient; otherwise, you will be spending much money on fuel for your generator.

The best indicator of a refrigerator’s energy-efficiency is the kind of compressor that it uses. Check if the 12-volt refrigerator compressor refrigerator you are interested in is using a highly-efficient, variable-speed compressor, like the Secop/Danfoss BD35F.

However, the ones used by Dometic, Edgestar, and Engel are also quite formidable when it comes to energy-efficiency.

Size and weight – As mentioned earlier, you need to make sure that you will be getting a new one that is the same size as the one you will be replacing, especially if you intend to replace the 12-volt refrigerator full size in your RV. If you don’t, you will need to do a bit of carpentry work to accommodate the new refrigerator.

As much as possible, the refrigerator that you get should not be that heavy. You should avoid a heavy one, especially if you like to move your furniture around or try to keep your RV’s total weight low.

Chest or front-loading? – Your choice between the two will depend on the amount of space available in your RV. For instance, if you do not have that much floor space but have enough overhead clearance, then you will do well to get a chest-type travel refrigerator as they open upward.

Now, front-opening refrigerators have the advantage of allowing you to see all of the contents at a glance, and everything seems more accessible.

On the other hand, the best 12-volt chest refrigerators are more energy-efficient due to the simple fact that the cold air will not spill out when you open the lid. It is not like front-door fridges where you can sometimes see the cold air dump out when you open them.

Additional Features – If you are the type who is not satisfied with the base model of anything, then shop for a new refrigerator that has tons of bells and whistles. If you like to have a fancy RV 12-volt refrigerator, get one with all or most of the following features, like digital controls and interior camera accessible via smartphone apps, among many others.

Now, if you just want something simple, here are the basic features that should be present:

  • The fridge should be able to work even at a 30-degree incline.
  • Bright LED interior lighting
  • Easy-to-access drain plug
  • Low-voltage cutoff switch
  • Lots of dividers and compartments
  • Has a separate compartment for vegetables and dairy

How Many Types of the 12-Volt Refrigerator Are There?

There are two types of RV refrigerators in terms of design – the chest type and the upright or front-loading refrigerators. Here is an overview of each one:

Chest type – If you do not have that much space in your vehicle like, for instance, if you travel in a large van, then you can get by with a regular-sized chest-type fridge. This type is usually small enough to wedge it between the two front seats of a van. It is the top-rated 12-volt refrigerator for RVs with limited space.

Front-loading – This type is similar to those you find in homes but scaled down to fit into smaller spaces like the interior of a recreational vehicle. If you have enough overhead space and floor space so that the door could open completely, then you should get this type.

Another advantage of this type of refrigerator is that it allows you to see all the contents immediately. You can also categorize 12-volt refrigerators depending on how they operate. In this case, your choices include the following:

Compressor refrigerators – These units are the most common ones that you will see in most RVs. The reason why these refrigerators are so popular is that they are durable and highly efficient.

Standard coolers – These coolers are not technically 12-volt refrigerators as they do not use power. Instead, they make use of highly insulated walls and a lid to keep the cold air inside. If you are on a tight budget, you can use a regular cooler. The high-end ones can even keep the contents ice solid for up to 10 days.

3-way absorption refrigerators – These fridges can run on 12v, 110v AC, or on propane. These units are the best in keeping food cold and frozen, but they use up a lot of energy, especially when used on 110v AC. On propane, it would mean that you have to route new fuel lines to make it work (if you do not have it already).

How Does a 12-volt Refrigerator Work?

The way the best 12-volt portable cooler refrigerators work is similar to those that work on AC power. They usually use a compressor to circulate coolant through the condenser coils outside the refrigerator’s housing. When the hot gas in the coils of the condenser is exposed to the cooler air temperature, it turns into a liquid.

The liquid refrigerant cools down rapidly as it flows through evaporator coils that are inside the fridge. The refrigerant absorbs all of the heat inside the fridge, thus making the air inside cold. As the refrigerant evaporates, it flows back into the compressor, and the whole cycle starts again.

Who Makes the Best 12-Volt Refrigerator?

I have seen and used several 12-volt fridge freezer brands, but only a few of them stand heads and shoulders among the rest. Some of them are Alpicool, Coleman, Igloo, AstroAI, Costway, Dometic, Whynter, ARB, Aspenora, Joytutus, and Holzer.

You can settle for the cheaper fridge freezer brands. However, if you want quality and lasting durability, then the ones offered by the mentioned brands are what you need.

Why Are 12v Fridges So Expensive?

RV 12-volt refrigerators are so expensive because they are built to work as well as full-sized refrigerators despite being less than half the size. For one thing, most of these appliances must be able to accommodate different power sources – 12v automotive power and 110v AC.

Would it be better to get a small household refrigerator and just plug it into the RV’s inverter power instead of getting true portable refrigerators? Yes, it is possible, but it will be inefficient and would only place a massive load on the vehicle’s batteries.

With that said, 12v fridges use a more complicated electrical system than one that uses 110v AC. It makes the units more expensive based on the complexity and materials used alone.

Another reason why the trusted 12-volt refrigerators are so expensive is that you can’t find that many brands offering 12v fridges, so the law of supply-and-demand dictates that they will be more expensive.

What Size 12v Fridge Do I Need?

You have to consider a couple of things when choosing the size of a camping fridge to buy for your recreational vehicle. One is the number of people who usually go on RV trips with you. If you have around five to six people in your family, you will need a rather large fridge to hold enough food for all of you.

Also, consider the amount of space available inside your RV for this new addition. The provision for the refrigerator should not just be for the external dimensions of the appliance. There should be enough space around for venting excess heat.

How Many Solar Panels Does It Take to Run a Dometic Fridge?

If you made the right power requirement calculations and the right solar power configuration, it is possible to run a portable refrigerator using solar panels exclusively. You will also need to use an inverter and enough batteries so you can still run your refrigerator at night.

To ensure that you are using the right size solar panels, keep in mind their power rating. It refers to the rate that they can charge the batteries in the system. The number of solar panels you need depends on how much electrical charge you will be using throughout the day. In this case, calculate how much electricity your refrigerator uses daily.

Once you figure out the power consumption of your refrigerator, you should add 20% more just for good measure. You cannot tell when there will be overcast skies, so having extra energy will come in handy.

Here is a sample energy calculation that you can base yours on. If you consume around 100-ampere-hours of electricity and you get around 6 hours of sunlight on average, then you will need:

100 Ah x 12V / 6 hours = 200 watts worth of solar panels

Also, since you need to overrate your system by at least 20%, that will bring your total to 240 watts.

Care and Maintenance

Maintenance requirements vary between the 12-volt refrigerator models, so consult the user’s manual that came with the fridge for better instructions. Regarding cleaning, you just have to clean your fridge around once a month using just clean water and cloth. Use glass and surface cleaners occasionally, too, if you want to give it a good cleaning.

A refrigerator is a definite must-have for any recreational vehicle. Not only will you need a fridge to keep your drinks cold, but it is also necessary to keep your food fresh for as long as possible. Although you can survive on dry foods alone, that kind of camping trip would not be that much fun.

Whether you are getting your first or thinking of replacing the old one in your RV, you need to find the best 12 volt refrigerator that your budget allows. This way, you will always have cold drinks. You would not also have to worry about your food going bad while in the middle of your trip.

Dometic CFX3 35 Powered Cooler

The Dometic CFX3 fridge is one of the most professional and high-quality in this review.

This is actually one of the small-mid range fridges in this collection, so if you want bigger, there are options available. It is a dual-zone portable fridge freezer, going down to -7F if you need it. The two compartments are separated in this model, left and right.

Dometic has made this portable 12v RV refrigerator easy to use and durable. The plastic foam shell is strong yet still light. And the handles are all top-notch.

In terms of power, you have the choice of 12V DC or even AC if you have an outlet handy where you are camped or parked.

There’s a control panel with the temperature that allows you to set it with ease. It also connects to the Dometic App so you can control things remotely.

Overall it’s a pretty good camping fridge/freezer but the lack of modes and full temperature adjustability make it a bit second class, but it is super affordable.

  • Cools to 7°F below ambient temperature
  • Reliable and efficient
  • Quite expensive, but lasts a long time
  • Capacity: 36 L / 2,196.8 cubic inches

Ansten Camping Fridge

fridge for trips

The Ansten Camping Fridge is labeled as a mini-fridge and is perfect if you’re looking for a portable fridge to drop in behind the seat.

This camping fridge uses only 45W, which is very energy efficient if you ask me. It can get down to temperatures of minus 4 Fahrenheit and you can select the temperature you desire using the control panel.

The 12v fridge cools down relatively quickly, taking just 30 minutes to get down to 32 °F. It is missing modes though, so you can’t pick between quick cooling or an Eco mode.

The 12-volt refrigerator freezer runs on both 12 volts or home sockets for use in your car or at home, and of course, you can pre-cool it before setting off on your camping trip.

It’s plastic which means it’s light and well-insulated. The lid seals well to ensure it stays cold without much energy.

What To Look For In The Best Camping Fridge

Type of camping fridge.

There are quite a few types of portable refrigerators from ones that run on propane to others that are pretty much coolers with sealed lids. Since we’re discussing the best camping fridges, there is only one type you need to know about, the compressor camping fridge.

All the fridges in the review are compressor camping fridges and they are the ideal option when it comes to portable fridges. They allow you to set your desired temperature, you can use them as freezers if you like, and they only come on when needed, which is very energy efficient. Some can even be used with a 12v dc solar system , they are that efficient.

Camping Fridge Capacity

There are two things you need to think about when it comes to picking the right camping fridge for your needs; how much food/drink you want to fit in there and how much space it’ll take up in your car.

The more food/drink you want to carry, the large the fridge needs to be, but the harder it’s going to be to fit and lift into your car.

We highly recommend packing all your camping food and drink suppliers into a cardboard box so you can work out the volume and then know exactly what size camping fridge you’re going to need.

How cold can it get?

Every camping fridge comes with a range of temperatures it can get to. Some can reach minus 7 Fahrenheit while others can only get down to 50 Fahrenheit below the outside ambient temperature. Think about your camping trips and the fresh food you take, or if you need to keep specific food cold.

Do you want a freezer or need one? Will you freeze things before your road trip and only need a fridge to keep them cool?

Power Type and Consumption

All the portable refrigerators in the review run on either the 12 volts from your car and home sockets. This is an ideal configuration as you can use the fridge camping or at home, and you can pre-cool it before a trip, saving your car battery some work.

When it comes to consumption, look for a camping fridge that is well-insulated and efficient so it doesn’t drain your car battery too fast. 45 watts is a low rate for a camping fridge and look out for eco modes that work to preserve energy.

Adjustability and Extra’s

Going for a camping fridge with an adjustable temperature is highly recommended. This means you will always have the desired temperature you want for your fridge contents, whether it’s a beer or burgers, and you can reduce power consumption by setting a higher temperature.

Another useful extra camping fridges come with a USB charging port so you can charge your phone from it. Some even come with Bluetooth so you can control and monitor them remotely.

It’s an ideal fridge for picnics, barbecues, camping, house parties, and wherever adventure takes you.
  • FAST COOLING: With its powerful compressor, the car refrigerator can cool to 32°F at most in 15 minutes when empty; it takes about an hour to reach its lowest temperature of -4°F (-20°C). You can switch between the MAX and ECO modes for faster cooling or energy saving. (It consumes less than 1 KW.H per day in ECO mode). NOTE: The operating temperature does not exceed 131℉.)

Whether you want something that'll keep ice frozen for days or a futuristic electric cooler, these are the best you can buy!

the 7 best car coolers that’ll keep your drinks ice cold and at the ready

If you buy something from the links on this page, we may earn a commission. Why Trust Us?

Editor's note: As of March 9, 2023, YETI has recalled 1.9 million soft coolers and gear cases in relation to a magnet ingestion hazard. The recall includes the Hopper M30 Soft Cooler 1.0 and 2.0, Hopper M20 Soft Backpack Cooler, and SideKick Dry Gear Case. We have removed all recalled Yeti coolers from our roundup and those who have purchased any of these products are advised to immediately stop using the recalled products and contact YETI for a refund or replacement.

Whether you’re in search of a car cooler to ensure your groceries are chilled after a Costco haul, are going car camping for the weekend, or just want something to help keep drinks cold in your SUV for a day trip, a car cooler is a great investment for your adventures on the go. The only problem? Finding the best car cooler for your needs is harder than you'd think.

That's because there are hundreds to pick from and they all vary in insulation materials, size, shape, and, of course, price. I've researched and compared more than 30 different models to help you find the best car cooler to take with you anywhere.

What to Consider

Before you start your search for the best car cooler, there are a few key items to keep in mind.

➥ Cooler Type

Here’s a quick breakdown of the most common types of coolers, so you can decipher which one is best for your needs.

  • Roto-molded coolers: This type of cooler is made from a continuous piece of plastic, rather than having separate parts joined together, which results in a more durable cooler that’s leak-resistant. However, roto-molded coolers are typically more expensive and heavier. Roto-molded coolers like the best-selling Yeti Tundra series do look nice though and they hold up extremely well. Even more importantly, they keep food and drinks cold the longest.
  • Soft-shell coolers: Soft coolers like the inexpensive Polar Bear 24-Pack are typically made from nylon, heavy-duty vinyl, or canvas. They are lighter and more portable than their hard-shelled counterparts at the expense of cold retention. On the plus side, they are oftentimes cheaper and still will keep your food and drinks chilled for hours on end.
  • Plug-in coolers: As you’d expect, these coolers, which come from brands like Dometic and ICECO plug in your vehicle's 12- to 24-volt accessory outlet (aka the cigarette lighter) or a 100- to 240-volt AC outlet. Rather than relying on ice for chilling your food and drinks, they have a compressor and basically serve as a mobile refrigerator or freezer. This means you can set a specific temperature to the degree on them.

➥ Size and Volume

When it comes to shopping for a car cooler, bigger isn’t always necessarily better, especially since they're directly correlated with sacrificing cargo space. Typically, small coolers have volumes of less than 25 liters, and midsize coolers range between 35 and 45 liters, but you can even opt for something as large as 65 to 100-plus liters.

I recommend most families get something between the 30- and 45-liter range, but if you want something that’s portable and easy to carry for long stretches, you should consider getting something a little smaller.

➥ Cooling Capability

Ice retention is surely one of the most important characteristics of a soft or hard cooler. However, a number of car coolers plug in and have compressors to keep them cold. Additionally, they oftentimes have precise temperature control.

If you opt for an electric cooler, it’s worth mentioning that some models support dual temperature zones, so you can bring both refrigerated and frozen foods.

➥ Closure System

Some car coolers have removable lids, others use hinges and latches, a lot use zippers, and a few even rely on magnets for keeping them sealed. Closure systems might seem like a small product element to nitpick, but trust me, even the smallest features can be the most annoying. So, we recommend deciding on your cooler’s closure system before picking one out so you can get easy access to a drink or a snack in a pinch.

This is an image

Preferences vary from user to user, but hinged coolers allow for quick and easy access which means an animal or child could easily get into them too, if they aren't latched. Zippers come in handy if you're worried about the cooler spilling and toppling over, but they are trickier to open, and magnetic coolers are less susceptible to leaks, but they require two hands to open.

Check out our seven favorite car coolers that are perfect for your next adventure, no matter where you're off to!

  • Capacity: 35 liters
  • Weight: 37 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎27.32 L x 15.67 W x 16.02 H inches

There’s a reason why Dometic coolers are the brand of choice among van lifers , RVers , and others who live a more nomadic lifestyle. Simply put, they are durable, efficient, and reliable. Really, the only downside is their expensive price — the cheapest and smallest model will still cost you a pretty penny (~$750).

I recommend you opt for the 35-liter CFX3 model, which will keep your food and drinks cold anytime and anywhere. The car cooler can reach temperatures as low as minus 7 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s insulated extremely well, is built tougher than the competition, and its handles feel robust and make it easier to lug around.

The cooler can run off both 110- or 12-volt power sources, and it consumes between 0.5 and 1 amp each hour (to maintain a temperature of 38 degrees Fahrenheit.) Given its efficiency and precise temperature control, you can feel confident storing sensitive food items like seafood or even medication.

The CFX3 has a complementary smartphone app to offer users remote controls and a quick but easy way to monitor its internal temperature. A reviewer at Vancillary — who has used a Dometic cooler for over three years now — called the Dometic a “game-changer” and said it’s well worth its high price tag.

  • Dimensions: ‎27.17 L x 13.6 W x 15 H inches

Annoyingly enough, electric car coolers have an incredibly wide price range. Some are even priced as high as $1,500. This option from Euhomy is a lot easier on your wallet and typically costs just under $300 — over three times cheaper than Dometic’s powered coolers. The Euhomy is a dual-zone cooler, which means one side can be used as a refrigerator and the other a freezer.

This option comes in three sizes, ranging from 35 liters up to 55 liters. The cheapest variant offers enough space to stow 36 cans of soda. The cooler is equipped with both 110/240 volt AC and 12/24 volt DC adapters, making it a good option to use both in the car or at home, or in a hotel room. The Euhomy allows users to set its temperature between 4 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

You can even pair it to your smartphone for remote control. The cooler weighs 30 pounds, so it may be a tad heavy for some. It does have handles on its side to ease the burden of carrying it, but unfortunately, they aren’t as large as Dometic’s car coolers.

A note on availability: Due to increased demand, this product may fluctuate between in and out of stock. We will be frequently checking and refreshing the links as it becomes available again. If the Polar Bear is out of stock, we also recommend this soft cooler from AO .

  • Capacity: 10 liters
  • Weight: 4 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎18 L x 12 W x 10 H inches

This affordable but durable soft cooler offers enough space for 24 cans of soda and 14 pounds of ice while still being narrow enough to store on the floor mat behind your front seat. It’s highly insulated and keeps ice frozen for 24 hours, even in the summertime. It comes in several colors and includes a convenient shoulder strap.

My colleagues at Best Products’ sister site, Good Housekeeping said of the soft coolers they tested , Polar Bear’s coolers performed the best, even just as well as hard coolers. The tester also remarked that it was “very easy to clean.”

YETI Roadie 24 Cooler

Roadie 24 Cooler

  • Capacity: 23 liters
  • Weight: 13 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎17.5 L x 14 W x 16.5 H inches

The Roadie 24 cooler from Yeti is an excellent option for day trips thanks to its taller and narrower size which makes it ideal for storing it in the backseat of your vehicle. It provides enough space to stack 24 cans and a 10-pound bag of ice. With an internal height of 13 inches, it is also tall enough to accommodate wine- or 2-liter bottles.

When it comes to insulation and ice retention, the Roadie 24 won’t disappoint. During my tests, I pre-chilled the cooler for a few hours before a weekend trip, and it was able to keep my drinks cold for 3 days.

Compared to Yeti’s soft coolers like the Hopper 18, it’s larger and much easier to get in and out of since it doesn’t have a zipper. That’s because its latches can be unhooked easily with one hand. Yeti’s zippers, on the other hand, are quite tight and require two hands to open.

I appreciate that the cooler features rubber feet on its base, which add some friction to keep it stable and prevent it from sliding around. Another nice perk? The Roadie is the perfect height to use as a stool when you need a place to sit while you’re out and about.

As for the not-so-great, I wish that its strap were longer. Unfortunately, it’s not long enough for shoulder carry, and when the cooler is loaded up, it swings around and can easily bump into your shin.

Overall, the Roadie 24 is a small but sturdy cooler that’s solidly constructed and outshines other coolers in ice retention. Its convenient size and shape make it a strong choice for a two-person trip or a day at the beach.

ICECO JP60Pro 60-Liter Mobile Refrigerator Fridge

JP60Pro 60-Liter Mobile Refrigerator Fridge

  • Capacity: 60 liters
  • Weight: 56 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎29.3 L x 19.5 W x 18.8 H inches

The ICECO JP60Pro is one of the most feature-filled car coolers on the market. The cooler is equipped with four cup holders on its top lid, two rulers for measuring fish (one in inches and the other in centimeters), and rubber-like latches to keep it closed.

This 60-Liter cooler offers more than enough space for a family of four and can easily store 60 cans of soda. Given the cooler’s large size — it’s about 30 inches long, 19 inches tall, and weighs 56 pounds — I was happy to see that it has two handles on each side. One pair is rope handles with padded grips, and the other two are located at the lip of the cooler.

On the left side, you’ll find a drain plug at its base for emptying melted ice, and on the opposite side, near the handle, is a convenient bottle opener. Users can easily set (and view) temperature with a side-mounted control panel.

YouTuber Jasonoid remarked that the ICECO is an extremely reliable cooler that did “really well” at regulating its temperature. The car cooler is DC power only, but fortunately, it comes with a DC to AC adapter. You can expect the fridge to pull an average of 1.08 amp-hours per hour which is impressive given its large size.

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that ICECO includes a cutting board and a useful wire basket to keep food organized. It’s also compatible with a removable set of 6.5-inch wheels at an additional expense, which makes it easier to move.

YETI Tundra 45 Cooler

Tundra 45 Cooler

  • Capacity: 35.6 liters
  • Weight: 23 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎25.8 L x 16.1 W x 15.4 H inches

The Yeti Tundra 45 hard-shell cooler is slightly larger than a checked piece of luggage, making it an ideal companion for an extended weekend getaway or camping trip. The rotomolded cooler has rope handles, a rubber seal around its lid, a metal dry storage basket, and tie-down loops.

Compared to the Roadie 24 I previously mentioned, this option has a 55% larger capacity (35 liters versus the Roadie’s 23 liters). It also has a drain system to allow you to quickly empty melted ice. It’s worth mentioning that the Tundra 45 is surprisingly heavy for its size and weighs 23 pounds when empty. It’s probably the largest hard-shell Yeti cooler that one person can comfortably handle.

Although the Yeti Tundra 45 is more expensive than most coolers, it retains ice longer than the competition to keep internal temperatures plenty low, it comes in a wide variety of fun colors and is durable as hell. It’s even bearproof!

ICECO VL75ProD 75-Liter Portable Fridge Freezer

VL75ProD 75-Liter Portable Fridge Freezer

  • Capacity: 75 liters
  • Dimensions: ‎38.3 L x 18.3 W x 18.1 H inches

The ICECO VL75ProD is the best option for large families, lengthy road trips, and folks who want a car cooler with dual zones that each have independent temperature controls. The cooler is essentially split in two and has separate lids for each side. That way, you can use one side as a refrigerator and the other as a freezer. Of course, you can set the same single temperature for each side in the event you strictly want to freeze or cool your items.

The cooler sports an ultra durable design with a steel shell and plastic bumpers. It’s weatherproof and has a sealed control panel, which has dual USB ports for charging your gear. It’s also equipped with bright LED lights on each side and comes with two baskets to help keep things organized. This option also packs dual drains if you use ice and need to empty it out once it melts.

Compared to the CFX3 75 from Dometic , the ICECO’s lids are easier to open for faster access to your items, even if you’re in the front seat. In fact, the lids can open in either direction! Both the Dometic and ICECO coolers allow users to completely remove the lids if need be. The Dometic also allows users to plug the cooler into both 12- and 120-volt outlets at the same time. However, Dometic’s coolers are oftentimes several hundred dollars more expensive than ICECO models.

If you have space for this massive cooler (it weighs a whopping 67 pounds), it will offer more than enough room to keep your food fresh and drinks ice cold. Although it’s typically priced at a hard-to-swallow $1,000-plus, it’s still cheaper than the competition and still has a reliable compressor and a durable build quality.

With a 34 quart capacity, the ‘fast freeze’ mode cools food quickly to -8°F. The clever controls on this small portable freezer and cooler mean it can be connected to both AC and DC power at once. It will then prioritize AC, but if this fails will switch to DC for its power supply.

Finding the Best Fridge Freezer for Camping : Buying Guide

When it comes to choosing the best camping fridge, there are a few important factors to consider. Here are some features to keep in mind:

Size and Capacity

The size and capacity of the fridge will depend on your needs and the number of people you’ll be camping with. Consider the size of your vehicle and the space you have available for the fridge. A larger fridge may be more convenient, but it will also take up more space and use more power. Make sure to choose a size that fits your needs without being too bulky.

Power Source

Camping fridges can be powered by electricity, gas, or solar energy. Electric fridges are the most common and convenient, but they require a power source such as a car battery or a generator. Gas fridges are more reliable in remote areas, but they require a propane tank. Solar fridges are the most eco-friendly, but they are also the most expensive.

Temperature Control

Temperature control is an important feature to consider when choosing a camping fridge. Look for a fridge that has a digital display and adjustable temperature settings. This will allow you to keep your food and drinks at the desired temperature and prevent them from spoiling.

Durability

Durability is also an important factor to consider when choosing a camping fridge. Look for a fridge that is made of high-quality materials and can withstand the rigors of camping. A fridge with a sturdy outer shell and strong handles will be more durable and easier to transport.

Additional Features

Additional features such as a built-in freezer, removable baskets, and interior lighting can also be helpful when choosing a camping fridge. These features can make it easier to organize your food and drinks and access them when you need them.

Fridge for camping

Camping Fridges –  Frequently Asked Questions

How are camping fridges powered  .

It’s important to choose a camping fridge that is compatible with the power source you have available.

Whether you think you’d like a propane camping fridge or a gas powered fridge for camping, are these options realistic? The simple answer is – you can run most camping refrigerators on 12 volt or mains power.

If you’re not at a campground hooked up to mains power , then you have a couple of options. One fridge listed here listed can be directly connected to a solar panel ( click here to find the best solar panels ), or can power your fridge by investing in a generator ( click here to find the best generator for camping ). As these run on various types of fuel, this gives you far more flexibility. In this way you can indeed use a gas powered camping fridge if you’d like to.

Do camping refrigerators have a freezer?

Yes, many camping refrigerators have a freezer compartment. However, the size and capacity of the freezer may vary depending on the model and brand. Some camping fridges have a separate freezer compartment, while others have a combined fridge and freezer.

All of the options listed here can run as portable fridges for camping – or as a small camping freezer. Some have separate compartments for both. A factor to bear in mind when making your camping fridge freezer comparison is how much storage you require for chilled and frozen food and drinks.

What are the top features to look for in a camping fridge?

When choosing a camping fridge, it’s important to consider its size, capacity, power source, insulation, and durability. Look for a camping fridge that is energy-efficient, easy to use, and has a low noise level. Some camping fridges also come with additional features such as a built-in battery monitor, adjustable temperature controls, and a removable basket.

How do I know what size camping fridge to get?

The size of the camping fridge you need depends on your camping needs and the number of people you’ll be camping with. Consider the length of your camping trip and the amount of food and drinks you’ll need to store.

A good rule of thumb is to choose a camping fridge with a capacity of at least 40-50 liters for a family of four.

What is the average lifespan of a camping fridge?

The lifespan of a camping fridge depends on its quality, usage, and maintenance. On average, a good quality camping fridge can last up to 10-15 years with proper care and maintenance.

Will an electric camping fridge drain my battery?

An electric camping fridge can drain your battery if it’s not properly managed. Various models have different modes so you can preserve battery life, or can be temperature controlled. It’s important to choose a camping fridge that is energy-efficient and has a low power consumption. You can also use a battery monitor to keep track of your battery’s power level.  If you are concerned about this, a leisure battery is one option and investing in a power generator for camping is another.

Which is the best portable fridge freezer for you?

Whether you wanted to discover the best portable freezer for camping or require a battery powered fridge to cool your food and drinks, we hope this guide has helped you decide. The best electric coolers for camping can make so much difference to your trip, as they give you constant access to chilled drinks and frozen food. Cheers!

Are you looking for the best best camping fridges to add to your outdoor kitchen?

Camping fridges, freezers and coolers are a hot topic right now. With the newly “refound” love for the outdoors, people are flocking to parks and backyards everywhere to hike, camp, and (at least temporarily) live outdoors.

Keeping your food cool has always been a basic necessity when camping. But with so many brands flocking the market, choices have become overwhelming.

How do you choose the best camping fridge? Read on to find out.

Our Top 3 Recommendations:

16 best camping fridges.

Do you remember camping when you were growing up? My grandparents had these big, metal Coleman coolers. One was full of ice cold pop (that’s what we call soda in the midwest) like Shasta or Cola. The other was full of breakfast and lunch stuff. Mostly soggy sandwiches.

Recent years have seen advancements in cooler technology. First came better insulation and innovative heat sinks. Brands like Yeti and RTIC have hit the market hard .

Dometic cfx3-55lM the best camping fridge and the best overland fridge

However, those brands come at a premium. In fact, you may be able to find a portable refrigerator for about the same price.

Best ARB Camping Fridges

ARB is one of the big guys in this space. An Australian company that now ships all around the world, ARB has become a leader in the portable fridge industry.

And for good reason. Their focus has been on reliability so that their products speak for themselves. They make all kinds of products for overlanding and camping designed to handle the rough conditions of the Australian outback.

Their camping fridges and freezers are no exception. Here are some of ARB’s top camping fridges to choose from:

ARB Zero Camping Fridge/Freezer. One of our top picks for portable camp fridges.

The ARB Zero is one of the latest releases. They have 2 styles: single (fridge only) or double zone (fridge/freezer). The single zone come in 37Q, 47Q, or 63Q. Their fridge/freezer combo comes in 73Q and 101Q.

ARB Classic Series II is an excellent choice for a quality camp fridge/freezer. But it would make a sweet overland fridge and is a top choice in 2021

ARB’s Classic Series II fridge/freezer combo features smartphone control, dimmable backlit touchpad, with internal led light, and temperature and battery protection. Comes in sizes from 37Q to 82Q.

ARB Elements camping fridge is heavy duty and made for the outside. Great for a truck bed fridge or an overlanding refrigerator 2021

ARB’s flagship camping refrigerator “Elements” is designed for the elements. Rugged stainless steel make this line of portable fridges perfect for the back of a pickup bed, but can also fit inside your SUV.

Best Dometic Camping Fridges

When it comes to quality, Dometic is another company that doesn’t mess around. One of the biggest names in the portable fridge space, Dometic has been around for a long time. The founders invented absorption refrigerator technology and have been installing them in RV’s since 1956.

With that experience comes refinement in tech and quality. Today, Dometic produces thousands of products in the cooling space. Here are some of their best camping refrigerators:

The Dometic CFX3 Portable Refrigerator and Freezer is built to last. Coming in sizes from 35L to 100L, you will find one to fit your style of camping. Durable construction, efficient compressor, and a convenient app to control it all from your phone.

Our size of choice is the 55L. We consider anything in the 50-60L range to be the Goldilocks size. Coupled with the features we mention above, you really can’t go wrong with a Dometic camping refrigerator.

The only real caveat is the price. Which our next product addresses quite nicely.

Camping Fridge or Camping Cooler?

Before jumping right into a camping refrigerator, you should consider whether or not you need one. As you will see, quite a few of the electric options are just a powered cooler and not a true refrigerator.

Here are some things to weigh out to help you decide:

  • How long will you need to keep your food cool?
  • If you need to refrigerate your food for several days, will you have access to bags of ice?
  • Will you use it enough that it’s cheaper than buying ice?
  • If so, will you be able to power it?
  • If you can’t power it with your car or plug into a campsite, will you need to buy a solar or portable generator?

These are just a few thoughts to consider before laying out your hard-earned money on a fridge where a quality camping cooler will suffice.

Having said that, I feel confident that this camping fridge buying guide is the perfect way to make your choice.

How to Choose The Best Camping Fridge

When deciding between the best fridges for camping, consider the following:

STEP 1 – Category: Which category of camping fridge do you need? STEP 2 – Size: What size do you need? STEP 3 – Power: What is your power source? STEP 4 – Price: What is your price range?

We have broken this buying guide into categories that help to narrow down the research. When you start shopping for a camping fridge, the options can seem overwhelming.

But I think you will see that the field narrows pretty quickly when you start looking this way. For most of us, the best type of refrigerator is going to be a compressor style. We’ll explain more later.

After you narrow down the type of camping fridge you can move on to the size you need. And that’s not too difficult to do when you consider how big your family is and how much you will need to keep cool.

Next, you will need to know what your power source is. Do you need a camping fridge that runs on DC power only? Will it be plugged into your car or truck? Will you have solar power or a portable generator? Will you have access to regular 110v wall sockets like you do at a campground?

If that sounds like too many questions, don’t worry. We’ll walk you through all of them. Most modern camping fridges come with multiple options, but the main thing is how much power they draw. But we will compare the efficiency of each one to help make the best choice.

Having those settled, it just comes down to your budget. Having eliminated the different types and sizes helps to home in on the best option. If you have deep pockets, the sky’s the limit. But the most expensive is not always the best option.

So, let’s get right into it. We will start with the best kind of refrigerator for your camping needs.

STEP 1 – Category: Which is the Best Type of Camping Fridge For You?

We stated earlier that camping refrigerators fall under 3 categories: compression, absorption, or thermoelectric. If that sounds overly complicated, it is. Basically those are the ways that the fridge stays cool.

But we don’t need to know how they work. We just need to know the pros and cons of each one to choose. So, how do you decide which kind is the best for your camping needs?

Let’s take a look and compare. By comparing the 3 categories, you will see why a compressor fridge will fit what most of us are looking for.

Compressor Camping Refrigerator

  • The most energy efficient on electricity
  • Temperature setting does not depend on outside air temperature
  • Does not need to be perfectly level to work
  • Works as a refrigerator or a freezer
  • Usually more expensive

Conclusion: Compressor Camping Refrigerator

This is the top choice of the 3 types of camping fridges because it works just like your home refrigerator. You set the temperature and forget it. It uses the least amount of energy to operate since it doesn’t require continuous power.

The temperature is less affected by the outside air; the other types can only cool up to 30°F (25°C) below ambient temperatures. That means you can lower it to freezer temperatures even in the summertime.

And unlike absorption fridges, it doesn’t need to be perfectly level to work properly. Which is important for camping and overlanding as a perfectly level site isn’t always possible.

Despite the price, there are very few drawbacks to this type of camping fridge.

Best Compressor Camping Refrigerator

fridge for trips

Absorption Camping Refrigerator

  • Can run on electric or LP (propane)
  • Consumes little propane to power
  • Inefficient power consumption if running on electricity
  • Needs to be perfectly level to operate properly
  • Only cools to 30°F (16.5°C) lower than the outside temperature
  • Must be vented if running on gas
  • Bulky, generally installed in RVs

Conclusion: Absorption Camping Refrigerator

If you have an RV, you most likely have an absorption refrigerator. They are very efficient when running on propane. While they are usually much bigger than the other types of camping fridges, there is normally a dedicated space in your camper for them.

For most campers though, an absorption fridge just isn’t a good option. You can’t set the thermostat like you can with a compressor style refrigerator. It can only cool to a limited range below the ambient temperature.

Most of them are technically considered 3-way fridges, meaning that you can run on gas, battery, or normal AC power. However, they are very inefficient on electricity.

If you will be without gas for any length of time, I wouldn’t recommend relying on them to run very long without completely draining your battery.

Best Absorption Camping Fridge

fridge for trips

Thermoelectric Camping Refrigerator

  • Can be used to keep food cool or warm
  • Very inefficient power consumption
  • Cannot set temperature
  • Only good for short trips
  • Doesn’t work well in warm weather above 77° F (25°C)

Conclusion: Thermoelectric Camping Refrigerator

Because they draw so much power, thermoelectric fridges are not recommended for overnight camping. It’s ok for keeping food cool on a grocery run or even on a road trip since your battery will recharge as the car is running. But I wouldn’t recommend trying to run it overnight unless you have a big generator.

However, even using one in the car is limited during hot weather since they become less efficient with warmer weather. Thermoelectric refrigerators rely on cooler air to absorb the warm air from inside the box. Above 77° F (25°C) they almost stop working altogether.

Best Thermoelectric Camping Refrigerator

Results: What is the Best Type of Camping Fridge for You?

As you can see, the best option for most campers is a compressor camping fridge . It is generally the most reliable in a range of weather. It can be set at your desired temperature just like your home refrigerator. They are more energy efficient since they cycle on and off as needed.

For those that have an RV or are converting a van into an RV, you may consider an absorption camping fridge. But only if you can keep it level and well ventilated and have access to propane.

If that is you, we have included the best absorption camping fridges for you.

And for the rare few that only need to cool some food for a day or so and won’t be in warm weather, we will also show the options for the best thermoelectric camping fridge.

But we will focus most of our recommendations on the compressor style.

Conclusion: Type of Camping Fridge

Choose thermoelectric camping fridge if you:.

  • Only need to keep food cool for a short trip from the grocery store or picnic
  • Like to waste money

Choose an absorption camping fridge if you:

  • Have an RV, camper van, or overlanding vehicle that can keep it vented and level
  • Are stubborn and just aren’t going to take any reasonable advice

Choose a compressor camping fridge if you:

  • Will be refrigerating your food for several days
  • Will be using electrical power
  • Need to be as efficient as possible
  • Want to set the temperature like your home fridge
  • Want the option of a refrigerator or a freezer

How to Choose The Best Compressor Camping Fridge For You

So, you have decided on a compressor style camping fridge. Excellent choice. Now you can start homing in on the best one to fit your needs and budget.

STEP 2 – Size: Choose the Capacity of Your Compressor Camping Fridge

This is going to vary by each person. How much food will you need to keep cool? The more people you will be feeding and the longer you need to keep it cool, the larger the capacity needs to be.

Your home refrigerator is measured in cubic feet. At least in the United States. In most other parts of the world fridge sizes are described in liters.

Most manufacturers of portable camping fridges are going to state the size by either liters or quarts, similar to how they advertise coolers. This can seem confusing, since it’s hard to make an apples-to-apples comparison. If one brand is 45L and the other is 45Q, what is the difference?

It’s safe to say that quarts and liters are roughly the same size. But for a quick way to compare, multiply quarts by 1.05 to find the equivalent in liters. Or multiply liters by 0.95 to calculate the size in quarts.

So, to compare a 45L camping fridge to a 45Q one, you can multiply 45L x 0.95 = 42.75Q

Or, to compare a 45Q camping fridge to a 45L one, just multiply 45Q x 1.05 = 47.25L

The bottom line is there isn’t a whole lot of difference in size between liters and quarts. Just remember that liters are slightly larger than quarts. And that manufacturers round their numbers.

So the question remains:

What size camping refrigerator do you need?

Ah, yes. I did digress a little bit. However, you will want to know how to estimate the size of your fridge. Here are a few factors to consider:

  • If you are going solo, a small 25L may be sufficient.
  • For 2-3 people, a 40L would be good for a weekend getaway.
  • For 4 or more people, a 50L would be a good minimum for a weekend.
  • For the single traveler, figure at least a 35L for a full week.
  • For 2-3 people, bump the size up to 50L minimum for 1 week.
  • For larger groups, 65L or more for a weeklong trip.
  • A camping fridge is going to take up some space.
  • If you don’t have space consider more meals that don’t need refrigeration.
  • Or plan more trips to the grocery store during your trip.

STEP 3 – Power: Select a Power Source for Your Camping Fridge

Now that you have figured out the size of portable fridge you need, it’s time to consider how you will run it.

If you have a 12v fridge, it will run off of your car’s battery just fine while your vehicle is running. But what about when you are at the campsite? How will you power your fridge without running your battery down?

While a compressor refrigerator operates very efficiently compared to the other styles of fridges, it will slowly draw power away from whatever it is connected to. If you’re not prepared, it could run your car or truck battery completely out and you will need a jumpstart.

If you are camping at a campsite that has electrical hookups, then you don’t need to worry about it. Just plug it in when you set up camp and you’re good to go.

But if you are planning on any other camping, I suggest you consider your power source. Before you buy a camping refrigerator, it’s important to know how much energy it will draw. You may find a great deal on a fridge, but if it sucks a lot of energy you may wind up spending more on a portable generator.

Which is not the end of the world to have a portable power source. It’s just something to keep in mind when budgeting for a camping fridge. It may cost more than just the appliance.

So, it’s good to check how many amps are required when shopping. Then figure out how to supply it.

Should you buy a 2-way or 3-way camping fridge?

All of that said, I recommend buying a camping fridge that allows for multiple power sources. If it is a 2-way camping fridge, that means you can run it off of 12v battery power or 110v power just like your house has.

If it can run on 12v, that means you can rely on a battery (your vehicle’s or a dedicated one) or a portable generator. You can get portable generators that have multiple power sources like 110v and solar power.

You can also get a small gas powered generator. Most RV’s have these, but must be ventilated properly and are usually mounted outside. And because of their noise, many campgrounds don’t allow them to run overnight.

Recommended portable power:

Jackery Portable Power Station Explorer 500

The only time you need to consider a 3-way camping fridge is if you have an RV or overlanding vehicle that can ventilate and keep the fridge level when running on propane.

For most of us, a 2-way portable fridge is going to be the best option.

For most of us, a 2-way portable fridge is going to be the best option

In summary, the questions to ask are:

  • The bigger the fridge, the more energy it will require
  • Will it run off of your car battery?
  • Will it have a dedicated battery?
  • Will it run off of a portable generator?
  • Will it run off of solar power?
  • The last thing you want is to find out you don’t have enough juice to keep your juice cool.
  • Top Door Fridges are the most efficient
  • Top Door Fridges are the most portable
  • Side Door Fridges may be easier to grab food or drinks
  • Drawer Fridges are compact and work well as a built-in

STEP 4 – Price: Set Your Camping Fridge Budget

This is an important step in any buying decision. After all, very few of us have an unlimited budget. However, saving money does not always equate to saving money.

For example, if you find the cheapest portable camping fridge you may find that it is poorly insulated or under powered. And the money you saved on the fridge has to be spent on a more powerful generator to keep up.

On the other hand, you more expensive doesn’t always equate to better quality. The old saying goes “you get what you pay for”. Unfortunately some manufacturers have taken advantage of that thinking and charge premium prices for a mediocre model.

So, don’t rely on advertising and price alone. Compressor camping fridges are more expensive than the other styles of portable refrigerators. But they are worth the extra money because they work when you need them. Consider this an investment that will save you money in the long run.

The SetPower RV45D PRO Dual Zone Fridge with Freezer balances quality, affordability, and durability to be the best overall camping refrigerator.

What are the different types of camping refrigerators?

There are 3 basic kinds of portable fridges. They are categorized based upon how they cool. 1. Compressor Camping Fridge – runs just like your home refrigerator; you can control the temperature precisely 2. Absorption Camping Fridge – does not have a compressor, but requires heat to power. These are common in RVs and campers because they can run on LP (propane) gas 3. Thermoelectric Camping Fridge – has no moving parts, which makes them smaller and quieter; however tend to be less efficient and have limited cooling temperatures.

How do you power a fridge when camping?

This question goes along with the previous one. There are 4 basic options: 1. AC power , (110v) just like you have at home 2. DC power , (12v) just like what you plug into your car.  3. Solar power , whether that is with an onboard solar panel or an external one  4. Gas power , generally running off of propane (pros and cons of gas power: For RV owners who are budgeting their battery power)

Which is the best 3-way camping fridge?

In addition to the 4 different options for powering your fridge, many new brands are making portable refrigerators that use combinations of AC, DC, solar, or gas power so that you can run your fridge under any circumstances. The Ecojoy XC-60A is the best 3-way camping fridge. Although, an absorption fridge never works as well as a compressor fridge.

What’s the best 12V camping fridge?

SetPower RV45D Pro 12v refrigerators (or DC refrigerators) have been around for a long time. They are commonly used in RVs, overlanding, car, truck, and SUV camping. Needless to say, they are a popular choice. Because of that, there are a lot of them to choose from.  We have done a roundup of the most popular ones and consider the pros and cons of each below.  However, for quick reference the SetPower RV45D Pro is our pick for the best 12v camping fridge. It is the one we ultimately chose for our SUV and the reason we have chosen SetPower as one of our affiliates. (More on that later).

What is the best fridge for solar power when camping?

LiONCooler X40A This is an increasingly asked question since solar power has become more efficient and portable. Not only do you have the option of 12v power, but many solar generators come with an inverter for AC output.  However, solar has limits on how quickly it can generate electricity, so you want to find the most efficient portable refrigerator possible. Additionally you want to know what your wattage requirements will be from your solar generator.  We include all of that below. The short answer for the best fridge for solar power when camping is the LiONCooler X40A because it includes its own solar power.

What is more energy efficient: side door, drawer style, or top door camping fridge?

The top door is the most energy efficient. This is because stacking food helps to hold in the cold. And because the cold air tends to stay at the bottom. When you are quickly opening and closing the lid, more of the cold air stays inside the box.

The Wrap Up: Best Camping Fridges

  • Inspect Your Home Wiring : Regularly inspect your home wiring for any signs of damage or wear. Faulty wiring can cause electrical issues that may lead to your fridge breaker tripping.
  • Ensure Proper Installation : Make sure your refrigerator is properly installed with adequate ventilation around the unit. Poor ventilation can cause the compressor to overheat, leading to breaker trips.
  • Schedule Maintenance : Regularly maintain your fridge by cleaning the coils, checking the door seals for leaks, and ensuring the temperature settings are appropriate. Neglecting maintenance can result in operational problems.
  • Consider a Dedicated Circuit : If your refrigerator shares a circuit with other high-power devices, consider installing a dedicated circuit for the fridge to prevent circuit overloads.
  • Get Professional Help : If you’re uncertain about any electrical issues or if the breaker keeps tripping despite preventative measures, it’s best to consult a qualified electrician to diagnose and address the problem effectively.

Remember, taking proactive steps to prevent your fridge breaker from tripping can save you time, money, and the inconvenience of dealing with a malfunctioning appliance. By incorporating these preventative measures into your routine, you can maintain a smooth-running fridge circuit.

Now armed with troubleshooting steps and preventative measures, you can ensure a smoothly running fridge circuit. By being proactive and implementing the suggested tips, you can minimize the chances of your fridge breaker tripping in the future. Remember to prioritize regular maintenance, proper installation, and seeking professional assistance when needed. With these strategies in place, you can enjoy a hassle-free experience with your refrigerator and avoid any disruptions to your daily routine.

For animals that share heritage with the mighty wolf, dogs can be real scaredy cats. When your dog is feeling extra stressed, it can help to have calming dog treats on hand. "I recommend calming treats for dogs facing separation anxiety, those scared by fireworks or thunderstorms, dogs unnerved by car rides or veterinary visits, or just general anxiety and nervousness," says Sylvalyn Hammond, D.V.M. , a general practice veterinarian in South Carolina. " Calming treats can be extremely helpful for dogs who do not do well with change , including if you move to a new home or bring in a new pet."

To find the best calming treats for dogs, we sought the advice of Dr. Hammond and Lisa Lippman, D.V.M. , a veterinarian and director of virtual medicine for Bond Vet , asking them to weigh in on the ingredients they recommend for canine patients. Note that our list omits CBD and hemp dog treats , as our GH Institute nutrition experts don't yet believe there's enough clinical research to recommend them for dog anxiety. While there is some research showing CBD can help dogs with pain, Dr. Hammond says that she recommends using it "with caution and after consultation with a veterinarian." In general, it's good advice to speak to your veterinarian before feeding any dietary supplement to your dog .

Kradle is Dr. Hammond's top choice for calming dog treats. "It incorporates natural ingredients such as passionflower and L-tryptophan [an amino acid], which have been shown to have calming effects on dogs, " she said. The brand's soft Bliss Bars are in a dog-pleasing peanut butter-bacon flavor.

The brand suggests that you give a serving before a stressful event such as you leaving for work (separation anxiety is real!), a thunderstorm rolling in or a planned car ride. These can get pricey, especially if you have a big dog or intend to use these daily. For dogs who like to gnaw, the brand also makes hard chews .

Greenies chicken-flavored calming supplements has the only under-$20 pricetag on our list, and it's also an easy brand to find in many supermarkets, pet stores and mass merchants. The brand touts it for use in times of occasional (but normal) canine stress based on its lead ingredients, L-tryptophan and L-theanine (another amino acid), which may help reduce anxiety and stabilize mood , respectively.

These are relatively new for Greenies so there's not as many online reviews to read, but it's is a trusted brand that also makes some of our favorite cat treats .

Purina formulates this daily probiotic supplement for dogs that display general anxiety in the form of pacing, spinning, whining and/or barking. The brand says its proprietary strain of probiotics can help calm your dog, but there is no clinical study on it. We like that the powder is simple to sprinkle over your dog's regular food.

The brand cautions that it might take up to six weeks to see results, which can feel like a long stretch to dog owners, but some online reviewers report seeing much faster improvement. If you just want to calm your dog in a one-time stressful situation, such as a vet visit, you might want something more fast-acting.

Vetri Science Composure Pro

Composure Pro

Composure is a brand that Dr. Lippman trusts, and these chews are marketed as a way to calm a dog for a single stressful event that pops up from time to time, such as the need for a nail clipping or grooming session, fireworks or if you hear a thunderstorm rolling in.

Vetri Science says Composure will start working in a half hour, so you don't have to wait for weeks to see a behavior change — but these are not meant to be daily supplements, just as needed during stressful events. Like others, its powered by L-tryptophan and L-theanine, but the first ingredient is actually thiamine, a B vitamin, which, when deficient, can affect a dog's nervous system .

Zesty Paws Calming Bites

Calming Bites

If you have a hyper or anxious puppy, this blend may be for them, made for a dog from 8 weeks to 12 months old . It uses chamomile and passionflower, two of the ingredients recommended by Dr. Hammond, plus other plant-based ingredients such as valerian and ginger. The small, soft bites are turkey flavored. Zesty Paws also makes a peanut butter flavor for fully grown dogs, and the supplements have more than 14,000 five-star Amazon reviews.

NaturVet Quiet Moments

Quiet Moments

The right dose of melatonin can make an animal sleepy , so if that's what you're hoping to achieve — your dog napping in the car instead of whining at the window, or resting sleepily while visitors are over for dinner — this could be the calming dog treat for you. These chews also contain plenty of other calming ingredients such as chamomile, passionflower and L-tryptophan.

But note that an incorrect dose of melatonin can sometimes produce the opposite effect and increase a dog's heart rate or cause confusion , so dose carefully. If you want to further promote a calming atmosphere you might also try the brand's herbal calming room spray .

Redbarn Bully Springs

Bully Springs

One pet owner with an anxious Spaniel swears these chews work wonders. "It's a vigorous chew experience, and he's always calm and happy afterward ," they said. So as an alternative to giving your dog a treat with calming ingredients, you can give your dog a long-lasting chew treat that will calm his troubles . It keeps a dog busy and distracted! And bully sticks are pricey, but made with just one single, natural ingredient.

How we chose the best calming dog treats

two brown and white dogs lay down in the back seat of a car, part of a good housekeeping story on calming dog treats

Two veterinary experts weighed in on this story: Sylvalyn Hammond , D.V.M., a general practice veterinarian in South Carolina, and Lisa Lippman , D.V.M., veterinarian and director of virtual medicine for Bond Vet , a chain of veterinary offices up and down the East Coast. We also checked in with Katie Brenner, a compliance officer with the National Animal Supplement Council .

On top of that, we consulted our in-house Good Housekeeping Institute experts on this guide, including Sabina Wizemann , a chemist who substantiates claims and evaluates products for the Good Housekeeping Seal , and Stefani Sassos , a registered dietitian who directs the Nutrition Lab. Last but not least, we interviewed real-life dog owners and sifted through online reviews for a full picture of real-life use of canine dietary supplements.

What to look for when shopping for calming dog treats

double line break

"Supplements are not tightly FDA-regulated , and different things may work for different pets," Dr. Lippman says. "So it's really about looking for trusted brands and trying them out to see what works for your pet."

Dr. Hammond agrees. "Every pet is unique, and individual factors such as age, breed, health status and concurrent medications must be considered before starting any new supplement regimen," which is why it's smart to first check in with your vet. Then, when shopping, consider:

✔️ Ingredients , including but not limited to:

  • Chamomile: A medicinal herb with relaxing effects in dogs . (And humans, who enjoy chamomile tea.)
  • Passionflower: Also a calming herb used for anxiety and sleep issues .
  • Ashwagandha: Traditional, medicinal plant used to combat stress .
  • L-theanine: A natural amino acid that can promote relaxation .
  • L-tryptophan: An essential amino acid that works with serotonin and melatonin to help reduce anxiety . L-tryptophan is not made by a dog's body so it can only be consumed as food or treats.
  • Ginger: There is some evidence that ginger can help with motion sickness and vomiting .
  • Rosemary: This herb is thought to possibly enhance a dog's mood .
  • Valerian: A flowering plant known for its sedative qualities .
  • Melatonin: A sleep-regulating hormone that can help with stress .

✔️ Made in the U.S.: Dr. Hammond prefers treats that aren't imported, because the FDA has established Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) for American companies to follow that help ensure the safe composition of all dietary supplements, including ones for pets. All the treats on our list are made in the U.S., though some ingredients are globally sourced.

✔️ NASC-Certified: Both vets recommend looking for the NASC-Certified seal on dog supplements. Brands that are certified by the National Animal Supplement Council pay to be audited for quality so they can carry that third-party certification. Everything on our list is NASC-Certified except for the Bully Springs, which are not sold as supplements. (It's the action of chewing that is calming with those, not the ingredients.)

When to see a vet

y

If calming treats aren't helping, there is more to try. "There are non-treat products to help calm dogs, like ThunderShirts , which provide gentle pressure to help reduce anxiety," Dr. Hammond says. "There are calming sprays containing pheromones, plus environmental modifications such as creating a quiet, safe space for your dog during stressful events. Regular exercise, mental stimulation and positive reinforcement can also contribute to overall stress reduction in dogs."

Need more help? Consult your vet about a prescription. "When the anxiety is really bad, see your vet because oftentimes, drugs are really helpful," Dr. Lippman says. "Drugs are a big part of a vet practice in that we want to do things that take stress off of our animals. It's better living through chemistry."

Why trust Good Housekeeping?

For more than 120 years, the Good Housekeeping Institute has been dedicated to helping consumers make sound choices, and helping families with all things pet care is a part of that. Many of our Lab experts are dog and cat owners and we test things such as dog jackets and cat carriers in the Lab, in our own homes and in consumer-tester homes as well.

Journalist Jessica Hartshorn has owned pets all of her life, though admittedly now has two cats and no dogs. Fortunately she shares a home with her dog-owning cousin and has many dog parent friends who share their wisdom and are willing to test dog products. She also leans on the expertise of Good Housekeeping Lab experts and the brand's consumer testers.
