Seven Of The Best Vacation Destinations For Horse Lovers

Modified: Jun 3, 2020 by Amber King · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

Galloping with giraffes in Kenya, living among nomadic herdsmen in Mongolia, riding along empty beaches in coastal France— horse-themed vacations  are certain to make for an unforgettable experience. It's exploring the world from your favorite seat (the saddle), and the team at Equitours makes planning your adventures easy.

Offering equine tours all around the globe, Equitours is run by a team of passionate equestrians who love travel almost as much as they love horses. The owners of Equitours, the Fox family, are also the proud owners of Bitterroot Ranch , a working ranch in Wyoming that invites guests to stay and experience their lifestyle. The ranch closes to guests in the winter, and that downtime inspired the Fox family to expand their horizons to horseback riding vacations in all corners of the world.

If you dream of seeing the world from horseback, experiencing new cultures, and making incredible connections with both people and horses, an Equitours vacation should be on your bucket list. Here are a few of their most popular destinations coupled with the most amazing experiences to inspire your next daydream.

#1. Explore Majestic National Park Country in Arizona and Utah

This seven-day trip takes riders through three of the world's most famous national parks. From your seat in the saddle, you'll be able to explore areas of the parks most tourists never get to see. The trail starts in the Pariah River Canyon and heads onward toward Bryce Canyon and the gorges near Zion National Park. The ride culminates with a breathtaking view over the Grand Canyon.

#2. Relax in the Irish Countryside

https://www.facebook.com/equitours.worldwide.horseback.tours/photos/a.10151781393518670/10151781395448670/?type=3&theater

Nestled in the remote northwest region of Ireland is a picturesque hotel and Irish pub where horseback riders from all over the world meet to explore unpopulated beaches and ride through Irish countryside. It's an escape from the hectic world of work and obligations and an opportunity to slow down and breathe in the fresh air, making it a perfect vacation destination for horse lovers. Beautiful and responsive Irish hunters and Connemaras are both the transportation and the inspiration. The horses are fast, personable, and confident as they gallop down country lanes and along sandy beaches.

#3. Herd Cows at an Argentinian Cattle Ranch

https://www.facebook.com/equitours.worldwide.horseback.tours/photos/a.384195488669/384195828669/?type=3&theater

Estancia Los Potreros is a 6,000-acre working cattle ranch in a beautiful location in Argentina. There's an amazing view of the Andes mountains, wildflowers everywhere you look, and an abundance of wide open space worth exploring on horseback . Ride consultant and Equitours co-owner, Hadley Fox, told iHearthorses,

"I adored trying polo in Argentina at Los Portreros. They have some of the finest horses I've ridden anywhere in the world, so responsive and sensitive. It is also the home of the hosts, and you feel the love and passion they put into their animals and their operation."

#4. View African Wildlife in Kenya

https://www.facebook.com/equitours.worldwide.horseback.tours/photos/a.10151785366338670/10156595071018670/?type=3&theater

An African safari is one thing, but imagine traversing that same landscape from the saddle of a horse. The Equitours trip to the Masai Mara in Kenya  is a once in a lifetime, awe-inspiring experience. Riders gallop after zebra as they cross their paths and stare in wonder at herds of elephants, giraffes, and countless other species unique to Africa. As Hadley puts it, there's nothing more exhilarating. This trip has been one of the most popular experiences Equitours has to offer for over 30 years, and it's easy to see why.

#5. Ride With Nomads in Mongolia

https://www.facebook.com/equitours.worldwide.horseback.tours/photos/a.384237563669/384237698669/?type=3&theater

Mongolia is like no other country in the world. The majority of families live as nomadic herdsmen, moving with their livestock in search of green pastures. On this horseback riding vacation, riders experience a living culture that has been around since the time of Genghis Khan. Riders travel 100 miles south of Ulaanbaatar in the Tov province. The region is an overwhelming expanse of silent, treeless landscape. There are no fences, no roads, and the only structures are the temporary shelters that make up the nomads' camp. It's a heart-stirring trip that leaves riders feeling physically accomplished and mesmerized by the world outside modern society.

#6. Marvel at Dramatic Landscapes in Chile

https://www.facebook.com/equitours.worldwide.horseback.tours/photos/pcb.10155719602828670/10155719598613670/?type=3&theater

If you dream of views that make you stop in your tracks and wilderness that is the epitome of natural beauty, the region of Torres Del Paine National Park in Chile should be on your list of must-see places. The landscape seamlessly transitions from towering granite mountains to rolling countryside, and it even surprises visitors with pockets of forests revealing breathtaking waterfalls, lagoons, and rivers. Riders on this trip also visit iceberg-filled lakes and wild-looking glaciers. Seeing it all from between your horse's ears is a perfect opportunity to relish one of the most remote wildernesses in the world.

#7. Visit Vineyards in Coastal France

https://www.facebook.com/equitours.worldwide.horseback.tours/photos/pcb.10154182875873670/10154182874808670/?type=3&theater

Horseback riding vacations don't always have to be about roughing it. If you're more of a wine and dine type of traveler, you'll enjoy the Equitours trip to Bordeaux, France  where horse lovers and wine enthusiasts unite. Bordeaux is famous for its wine, and this seven-day holiday is a celebration of the area's long-standing culture and beauty. Visiting top-tier wineries to ride horses through the grounds and sip the best wine in the region is all on the agenda. And don't forget the horseback expeditions to remote beaches  for much-needed peace and relaxation.

For people who love horses, there's no better way to see the world than from a saddle. It's a chance to slow down and truly experience a new region and culture. Instead of zooming by in a car or a tour bus, you make meaningful connections with the horse, the people, and the area. Hadley told iHeartHorses,

"At the end of an Equitours trip, we hope you go home feeling both rejuvenated and accomplished. You weren't sitting on a tour bus for hours on end-- you should be proud of the physical accomplishment! At the same time, it is such a perfect pause moment from your regular life-- you got away from the routine of commuting and working, you explored a new place, you made memorable connections, both equine and human."

Choosing the Right Horse Vacation

Choosing the right horse vacation can be a daunting task, especially if you are a horse lover looking to spend quality time with these majestic animals. Here are some tips to help you choose the right horse vacation:

Determine Your Skill Level

Before you book your horse vacation, it is essential to determine your skill level. Horse farms and ranches offer different riding experiences, ranging from beginner to advanced. If you are a beginner, you may want to consider a vacation that offers lessons and guided trail rides. If you are an experienced rider, you may want to consider a vacation that includes arena work, jumping, and other advanced riding experiences.

Consider Your Goals

Consider what you want to achieve during your horse vacation. Do you want to improve your riding skills, learn a new discipline, or simply relax and enjoy the scenery? Different horse vacations offer different experiences, so it is essential to choose one that aligns with your goals.

Research Horse Farms and Ranches

Research different horse farms and ranches to find the one that best suits your needs. Look for reviews and testimonials from previous guests to get an idea of the quality of the experience. Check the facilities, such as the arena, stables, and pastures, to ensure they are well-maintained and safe for both horses and riders.

Consider the Location

Consider the location of the horse vacation. Do you prefer a rural or urban setting? Do you want to be close to other attractions and activities, or do you prefer a more secluded location? The location of the horse vacation can greatly impact your overall experience, so choose one that aligns with your preferences.

Check the Cost

Finally, check the cost of the horse vacation. Horse vacations can vary greatly in price, so it is essential to choose one that fits within your budget. Consider what is included in the cost, such as meals, accommodations, and activities, to ensure you are getting the best value for your money.

By following these tips, you can choose the right horse vacation that meets your needs and ensures a memorable experience.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Zzzzzz.

That sound you hear is that of time passing by and of you, worn out by the daily grind and put to sleep by the notion of yet another “stay-cation” spent at home catching up on chores. Is that going to put snapshots in your scrapbook or be something the kids remember fondly for life? Not likely!

Before another year gets away with no getaway, why not rekindle life’s fun factor by going on a vacation trip based on your love for horses? There are lots of ways to make that happen and plenty of price-point options.

As proof, we rounded up details on 50 great escapes that range from across the country and around the world to just down the road a piece. Horses. Riding. Life.

How to ride the stumble out of your horse.

Stumbling2

* This article is not about a health issue that may cause stumbling; rather, it is about a riding-related loss of balance. If any health problem is suspected, please consult with a veterinarian.

Do you have a horse that seems to regularly trip or stumble, either in the front or hind end?

The footing is good. The path is clear. There were no sudden changes to your direction.

The horse is sound and you know the tack fits well. His feet are trimmed. You've had the vet out and she confirmed that there are no other underlying physical issues.

Yet your horse stumbles here, trips there, and as time goes on, you learn to just quietly ignore it. After all, the horse is trying his best and there's nothing you can do, right?

If you listen carefully, you might even discover that you are more a part of the equation than you give yourself credit for.

It might be something you are doing. Or it might be something you are NOT doing !

Be an active rider so you can help your horse through these moments. Your strong problem-solving skills are just the ticket to helping your horse develop better balance during riding.

Reasons for Stumbling

The root problem might be one, or a combination of these ideas.

1. Horse is heavy on the forehand.

We know the tell-tale signs for that. The horse is heavy on the bit. The front leg strides are bigger than the hind leg strides. The horse might even feel like he is on a downward slope, leaning in to the ground rather than up away from it.

2. Horse's outline is too long and low.

This might come hand-in-hand with #1. Often, we feel we are being "nice" to let a horse stretch his neck up and/or down, because we are taught that a longer rein leads to a softer, lighter contact that is kind. What we aren't always told is that the horse might have to brace his back and tense his muscles to hold a longer body position, especially in order to deal with the weight of a rider in the saddle.

Add to the "strung-out" outline - a hind end that is no longer able to support the weight (because the hind legs have stretched beyond the horse's croup, thereby not allowing for adequate weight carriage) - and there you have it folks - the stumble!

3. Horse speeds up faster and faster in the same gait.

A horse that tends to move his legs faster and faster when you ask for more impulsion or a gait change is a good candidate for a stumble. Again, his weight (and yours) falls forward and the front legs have to carry the majority of the impact.

4. Inadequate engagement.

The opposite can also be true. The horse that "sucks back" is bracing with his front end, effectively pushing backward or lacking enough energy to maintain balance while progressing forward in space. This active tension can be a cause for stumbling.

5. Horse needs extra help on one side.

A horse with a weak side (for example, a weak left stifle) could have trouble bringing that hind leg up with the same amount of strength and fluidity as the rest of the body. After the true source of the problem is identified and addressed (i.e. call a veterinarian!), you can support that side with more active riding aimed at building up the muscles around the joint.

6. Horse is overly crooked.

Some horses are particularly stiff to one side. This might be influenced by a natural cause (born that way), or from previous incorrect riding. In either case, much attention needs to be given to at least straightening the horse (even if it is too difficult to get a true bend) while he is moving.

7. You shift your weight to the horse's forehand.

Riders often lean forward in movement. As bi-peds, it is what we are naturally programmed to do! However, "listen" carefully to your horse when he stumbles. If he tends to trip when you lean forward, you know the reason why. In this case, you will need to hold your weight back, even if you want to ride in two-point or go over a jump. You can hold your weight and change your posture - just be aware!

4 Steps to Prevent Stumbling

1. Leg on for impulsion.

Even the fast-footed horse can be disengaged and needs to bring his hind end underneath him. So put your legs on and be ready for more movement! Lighten the contact as you apply the legs.

2. Commit your body to the energy surge.

The horse should lurch forward a bit. This is good. Go with him. Be sure you don't stop the forward inclination by pulling back during the lurch moment.

3. Straighten the horse (if needed).

Use the energy surge to straighten the horse, left or right as needed. Just guide the energy into straightness, don't stifle it.

4. Half-halt.

This is key. Without the half-halt immediately after the energy surge, you tell the horse to run away. You don't want your horse to flee your aids, so within a moment after your legs and straightness, you half-halt should come on (brace your seat, back, arms momentarily) to control the energy you just created.

*Then release .

The idea is to re-balance that energy surge to the hind end rather than let it run out the front end. Think half-halts and use them as often as necessary to help your horse maintain balance. Constantly work on that re-balance - you may need to do the whole thing three, four, five times in a row, in rhythm with the horse's strides , to help the horse understand he needs to sift his weight backward.

This might be very difficult for a horse (and rider) that is not used to working from the hind end. But it is essential, first, to prevent the stumble, and second, to keep the horse sound long-term. Good luck!

More and more couples are trading in beach resort getaways for unique, adventurous honeymoons and vacations off the beaten path. For a truly memorable experience, horseback riding vacations are unlike any other. Sharing stunning, remote locations from the saddle and spending quiet nights in the wilderness with your partner will foster a new appreciation for nature.

For an all-inclusive horseback riding vacation that doesn’t skimp on the comfort, here are our favorite 10 all-inclusive horseback riding vacations.

Vista Verde Ranch, Colorado

In the heart of the Elk River Valley and surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, Vista Verde Ranch is the ultimate romantic setting for your all-inclusive horseback riding vacation in Colorado.

Wranglers pair you with a horse at the start of the week. After some basic drills to assess your ability, you’ll have a short “practice” trail ride. After that, trail rides take place twice daily, with some day-long rides throughout the week. The year-round riding program accommodates new riders, and experienced riders are welcome to join their cattle round-up in late August.

The wooden Honeymoon Dome cabin may look plain on the outside, but inside you’ll find plush sofas, a beautiful bathroom with marble countertops, and a cozy wood-burning furnace. A private outdoor hot tub sits on the deck so you can watch the sunrise or soak under the stars.

Gourmet meals are also part of the package, served family-style in the dining room. Cookouts are popular when the weather is nice. Wine pairings complete the gourmet experience, and couples who want a day off from riding can sign up for a cooking class or wine tasting. Or, relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the ranch.

Mayan Dude Ranch, Texas

For a horseback riding vacation that’s close to home, Mayan Dude Ranch is just outside of San Antonio, Texas. Each day kicks off with a trail ride to a hearty outdoor breakfast. Afterwards, guests can either continue with the ride, exploring the ranch’s 348 acres, or head back to the main lodge and enjoy amenities like the pool, sports equipment, and nearby golf course. There is also an afternoon trail ride if you’d rather skip breakfast and sleep in.

A river runs through the ranch where anglers can cast a line. The grounds are quiet and peaceful, a perfect place for a leisurely afternoon walk or curling up in the grass with a book. Mayan is a family-oriented ranch and there are lots of activities for the kids to enjoy like cowboy games and dino walks.

Lodging is plain but cozy. Cottages with up to 3 rooms are available. All-inclusive horseback riding vacations here cover two trail rides per day and all meals, which are served up family style and feature Southern comfort food like ribs and biscuits plus a Mexican menu on theme nights. The grounds come alive with parties almost every night of the week including barn dances, live music, and bonfires.

horse that trips

Rancho Cortez, Texas

Also outside of San Antonio, Rancho Cortez is an all-inclusive dude ranch that offers weekly horseback riding vacation packages and overnight stays as well as day visits and private riding lessons. They also run a two-week or 60-day all-inclusive wellness camp where guests can participate in ranch chores and instructor-led fitness classes.

Meals are served in the main dining room according to a set schedule. Their cozy cabins feature large porches and classic cowboy finishings. There are two pools–one indoor and one outdoor– plus a hot tub for chilly nights.

With comfortable accommodations, an onsite spa, and acres upon acres of pristine Texas countryside, a horseback riding vacation to Rancho Cortez is a way to recharge your mind and body.

Lost Valley Ranch, Colorado

For another all-inclusive getaway in Colorado , Lost Valley Ranch is tucked between Colorado Springs and Denver. Its location in the Pike National Forest provides endless trails for a horseback riding vacation. Guided trail rides are scheduled twice daily and included in the cost of your stay, along with 3 hearty meals per day and full use of the ranch’s amenities. You could also try your hand at trapshooting and archery, go out for a hike, soak in a hot tub, or play in the sports court. There are sometimes bonfires or square dances in the evening.

One-, two-, and three-bedroom cabins are spread throughout the property. They each offer the privacy and seclusion of the forest and come with large porches and comfortable lounge swings. Living rooms have a rustic fireplace and wood is restocked daily. Staff can even come to your cabin and build a fire for you at your request.

Trail rides often end with breakfast or lunch being served al fresco from the top of a mountain while dinners usually take place in the dining room of the main lodge. Lost Valley Ranch is open during spring, summer and fall only, and a 2-night minimum stay is required.

Spotted Horse Ranch, Wyoming

Spotted Horse Ranch is the perfect place for an all-inclusive horseback riding vacation in Wyoming . All-inclusive packages can be booked for 6- or 7-night stays; they include your cabin and all meals, plus all ranch activities like horseback riding, fishing, rafting, and tickets to the rodeo, which takes place every Wednesday evening in Jackson Hole.

Classic log structures give off that Old West vibe. Cabins are quaint and the dining room in the main lodge comes with a massive fireplace and provides a beautiful view of the river below. Meals are homecooked and served up in family style.

Guided trail rides take place once per day in the morning. After that, horses are released for the day to graze in the pasture, leaving you to give the ranch’s other activities a try or simply relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Colorado Trails Ranch, Colorado

Colorado Trails Ranch sits on an astonishing 1000 acres and offers all-inclusive horseback riding vacation packages throughout the summer, plus an adults-only week at Labor Day for a 10% discount.

Along with horseback riding you’ll have access to streams for fly-fishing, rodeos, breathtaking hiking trails into the San Juan mountain ranges, dancing, shooting, archery, and rafting. Amenities include a pool and hot tub, a fitness room, a yoga center, and a spa.

The 1-bedroom cabin comes with a king-size bed, a cozy living room, and a large wrap-around porch. The dining hall is a large longhouse-style cabin where meals are served buffet or family-style. Once per week, parents can enjoy an adults-only plated dinner while the kiddos have dinner around a campfire, and cookouts are held often when the weather is nice.

Chilko Experience, Canada

In northern British Columbia tucked into the Coastal Mountain ranges sits a luxury wilderness experience unlike any other. There are also guided meditation and yoga sessions taking place daily in one of the ground’s many peaceful corners, and amenities that include a wood-fired hot tub, gym, and fire circle.

Meals are rustic yet upscale and made with fresh, locally sourced produce. The bar serves up handmade cocktails, local craft beer, and wines straight from the Okanagan Valley. Wood cabins with massive windows reveal the breathtaking scenery that surrounds you, and you can spend the morning taking it all in from your private porch.

What people say about us

We worked with Mike to plan our perfect honeymoon in Greece — he was amazing the whole way through and put together a trip we will cherish for our lifetime.

He was thoughtful with our suggestions, and provided some of his own without every pushing us. He stayed within our budgetary means but made it feel like we had a budget twice the size.

Dan and Michelle were such a joy to work with! They really made our trip and cruise successful. Based on our needs they were able to help us identify and schedule what side trips and activities would best suit our interests.

After this trip I will be using a travel agent for future vacations…just can’t wait for the next one they help us plan!

Honeymoon Always has been fantastic- our trips were 1000% better because of their help. The first time we used them we wanted to have a fun trip with some cultural experiences, good food, not too packed, and for a good price. It was fantastic and now we've used them for several trips in Europe, Central America, and the Caribbean. Each trip was so different but they were able to make each one special and unique to our needs.

HORSE PACKING EQUIPMENT

Horse packing equipment and pack gear for all your packing needs. Pack gear includes pack saddles, pack panniers, saddle panniers, saddle scabbards, leather saddle bags, tent stoves, wall tents, tack, trail saws, scales and various horse packing equipment and pack gear items.

On the top menu bar I have additional separate categories for horse and mule packing equipment that will make your search easier for what you need. Ten pack saddles and 30 pack panniers are available for any use and budget.

Horse packing supplies vary tremendously in price.  Top quality can be very expensive and you pay for what you get. However, horse packing supplies for the infrequent packer does not have to be the very best, unless that is your personal choice.

I often see hunters, packers and outdoorsmen using very old horse packing equipment.  When using very old horse pack gear that is basically not safe you are just waiting for an accident to happen.  You don't need yourself, friends or your pack animals needlessly injured in the backcountry where medical assistance is not readily available.

Inspect your pack gear before and after your pack trips to identify any issues. Budget accordingly and buy whatever packing gear your budget will allow to avoid accidents and injuries.

The most common problem on a pack saddle is where a leather strap bends around a buckle or a Dee ring. Inspect these bends carefully especially on the inside of the bend.  The leather will crack at these bends quickly if you don't oil your pack saddle leather yearly.

I strongly recommend you use a pack scale to balance your load on each side of the pack animal.  If your pack is not balanced your load and pack saddle will eventually fall to one side and possibly cause a wreck.  A good pack horse will struggle with an unbalanced load and try to work through it.  Some untrained pack animals will start bucking once the pack saddle becomes off center.  Not a good situation on steep mountain trails.

I also recommend you always have some type of pack saw with you when packing in the backcountry to clear a trail if necessary.  The Forest Service does not have adequate funds to clear all horse trails.  Usually, the first person on a horse trail when the winter snow melts is an outdoorsman or a packer.  That first person on the trail will have the honor of clearing it. Sometimes, you can easily go around the downed tree and other times it will take a pack saw to clear the trail.

If the horse packing equipment you want is not listed, contact us, and we will find it for you.

If you are just starting packing and if you have any questions on horse packing equipment or pack gear quality, contact us by email or phone. I will be glad to answer any questions you have.  Rich
