BROOKVILLE, N.Y. , Sept. 22, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- New details announced about Lin-Manuel Miranda + Friends , the first event of the 2023/24 season at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at LIU Post . In a one-night-only event created exclusively for Tilles Center, Pulitzer Prize, Grammy, Emmy and Tony Award-winning songwriter, actor, producer, and director Lin-Manuel Miranda will be joined by moderator Jeremy McCarter , with whom he co-authored two New York Times bestsellers. The evening will also feature musicians from the RISE Theatre Directory and Long Island's own Central Islip High School Concert Choir . A final block of tickets has also now been released for sale.
Complementing the moderated conversation with Miranda will be performances by previously announced Broadway stars Mandy Gonzalez ( In the Heights, Wicked, Hamilton ) and Javier Muñoz ( In the Heights, Hamilton ), with music direction and piano by Dan Lipton ( The Band's Visit, The Last Ship). Tilles Center is proud to partner with the Miranda Family Fund in the creation of opportunities for artists of color. As co-author with Miranda of two New York Times bestselling books, Hamilton : The Revolution and In the Heights: Finding Home , moderator Jeremy McCarter brings a personal touch to the intimate conversation with Miranda about his work, his process, and his already spectacular career. Among his many accomplishments, McCarter spent five years on the artistic staff of the Public Theater in New York , where he created and ran the Public Forum series, featuring some of America's leading actors, writers, activists, and community leaders, exploring the intersection of arts and society.
Dan Lipton will lead a four-piece band of musicians sourced from the RISE Theatre Directory , co-founded by Lin-Manuel . The Directory seeks to build a more equitable and inclusive theatre industry. Musicians for the evening will be guitarist Jacinta Clusellas , drummer Emma Ford and bassist Irio O'Farrill . "I happened to get the call for this event the day Lin-Manuel's RISE Theatre Directory was announced, so the first thing I said was... let's use it!" shares music director Dan Lipton . "RISE was launched in partnership with MAESTRA, whose directory has become a major resource for me in hiring female musicians. Thanks to RISE, our band at the Tilles Center will amplify diversity while amplifying Lin's songbook."
Students from the award-winning Central Islip High School Concert Choir will join Lin-Manuel Miranda + Friends during select closing musical numbers during the event. The choir has received distinguished recognitions such as Gold Rating with Distinction rating during the NYSSMA Major Organization Festival, commendations by federal, state and local legislatures, and has performed at the White House and the Vatican. Central Islip Director of Music Education, Philip Voigt , shared, "The musicality, talent and dedication of these students and their director, John Anthony never ceases to amaze me. You know what they say about Broadway : If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.
Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda is set to be adapting a musical loosely inspired by Martin Scorsese ‘s beloved 1977 movie musical “ New York , New York” for Broadway, set for a March 2023 release. The official opening night will be in April 2023, and Tony winner Susan Stroman will direct and choreograph the musical.
The Scorsese film starred Liza Minnelli as a lounge singer who falls for a saxophonist, played by Robert De Niro. Their romance gives way to their respective ambitions and dreams of music stardom against the backdrop of the Big Apple in the 1940s.
However, the same characters will not be appearing in the new iteration. Deadline reported the Broadway production will “feature little of Scorsese’s storyline” from the film. Yet the setting remains the same: post-war 1946 in Manhattan as the city recovers.
The Broadway adaptation will feature numbers written for the movie by John Kander and Fred Ebb, with Miranda penning additional lyrics for new Kander songs. David Thompson, who worked with Kander and Ebb on “The Scottsboro Boys,” will write the book, with Sharon Washington (“Feeding the Dragon”) co-writing the show. This is the first new Kander and Ebb musical on Broadway since 2015’s “The Visit.”
“New York, New York” will be produced by Sonia Friedman (“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”) and Tom Kirdahy (“Inheritance”).
Sam Davis will serve as music supervisor and oversee arrangements, with Daryl Waters and Davis as orchestrations and David Loud on vocal arrangements. Music direction will be by Alvin Hough Jr.
Casting breakdowns are currently being issued, with a cast of 31 members and an orchestra of 19 musicians. The cast and story will be inclusive. Casting is being handled by Jim Carnahan Casting’s Jim Carnahan and Jason Thinger. Foresight Theatrical is handling general management.
“New York, New York” has been in development for four years with a workshop done earlier this year.
Two-time Oscar nominee Miranda recently helmed his feature debut, Academy Award-nominated “Tick Tick Boom” starring Andrew Garfield. The “In the Heights,” “Hamilton,” and “Encanto” writer is also producing the upcoming live-action “Little Mermaid,” which he is rumored to also be starring in as Chef Louis.

Lin-Manuel Miranda to Adapt ‘The Warriors’ as Stage Musical

Of course, Miranda is best known as the creator of the zeitgeist-smashing “Hamilton.” His other Broadway bona fides include the Tony-winning “In the Heights” and “Bring It On: The Musical.” He also wrote the catchy music for Disney’s animated films “Moana” and “Encanto,” whose soundtrack notably includes the viral earworm “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”
After he departed the role of Alexander Hamilton in 2016, Miranda has been expanding his repertoire in the entertainment industry. He was a producer on Jon M. Chu’s big-screen adaptation of “In the Heights” and directed the autobiographical musical “Tick, Tick… Boom,” which earned an Oscar nomination for Andrew Garfield.
The New York Post first reported Miranda’s involvement with the project.

Lin-manuel miranda is working on this new broadway musical: source.
Broadway won’t have to “wait for it” much longer.
Lin-Manuel Miranda is hard at work on a new stage musical, a source told The Post.
The “Hamilton” writer’s latest will be an adaptation of Sol Yurick’s 1965 novel “The Warriors,” about violent gang battles in New York City during the sixties, the person near the Miranda family said.
Miranda’s team did not respond to The Post’s multiple requests for comment.
The sundown-to-sunrise story — which spans Manhattan, Brooklyn and The Bronx — makes sense for the lifelong New Yorker with several hits already set in his hometown: “In The Heights” and, of course, “Hamilton.”
Miranda, 43, hasn’t unveiled a new show of his own since “Hamilton” premiered downtown at the Public Theater eight years ago and became a worldwide phenomenon.
After that American Revolution musical — Broadway’s biggest success in years — he contributed lyrics to the recently shuttered “New York, New York,” and wrote the songs for the Disney movies “Moana” and “Encanto,” along with some new tunes for the live-action “The Little Mermaid.”
His Tony Award-winning “In the Heights” was turned into a Warner Bros. movie , and he directed Netflix’s musical film “Tick, Tick… Boom!”.
As Broadway’s only celebrity composer (who’s not a pop singer), a brand new musical by Miranda would be an instant draw for ticket-buyers and a major coup for the struggling theater business.
A premiere date and location are not yet known, though a tryout of the show would be a boon for the Public Theater, which was recently forced to lay off 19% of its staff and slash programming for budgetary reasons.
Wherever it lands, he’s picked a fascinating title.
Some viewers will remember the culty 1979 film “The Warriors,” which is fun to watch now for its authentic shots of the bad old days of New York City. Trains are covered in graffiti, gang members of all different races and ethnicities wear funny matching costumes and the presentation is hyperstylized.
New Yorker critic Pauline Kael adored the movie , writing that it embodies the “spirit of urban-male tribalism and the feelings of kids who believe that they own the streets because they keep other kids out of them.”
But Yurick hated it. His novel is much grittier, and he wrote it in part to rebuke the glossy image of gangs put forth by the musical “West Side Story,” which opened on Broadway eight years prior.
The novelist, who died in 2013, shadowed real gangs around the city for research, and even walked through dark subway tunnels on the tracks late at night. His resulting book was, itself, inspired by the ancient Greek war story “Anabasis.”
All of that is tricky subject matter for Broadway, to be sure, but Miranda has a way with finding the musical core of unlikely topics, be it Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton or the daily struggles of a Washington Heights bodega owner.
“The Warriors,” appropriately for the mind behind “Hamilton,” takes place on July 4.
It’s not yet known if Miranda will make the new show sung-through, like “Hamilton,” or feature a script written by another playwright, like “In the Heights” by Quiara Alegría Hudes.
But no collaborator, director, producer, investor or theater landlord will say “no” to this.
