Those are also the only golfers in PGA Tour history to achieve 60 or more wins. There are seven golfers with 50+ wins, nine with 40 or more victories, 16 with at least 30 wins. Thirty-seven golfers have won 20 or more PGA Tour titles in their careers.

Tiger Woods , 82 WINS

With a victory at the Zozo Championship on Oct. 27, 2019, Woods won his 82nd PGA Tour victory, tying the record held by Sam Snead. His first PGA Tour win came 23 years earlier, on Oct. 6, 1996, at the Las Vegas Invitational. In Woods' fifth start as a pro, he beat Davis Love III in a sudden-death playoff. Woods holds the record for most consecutive weeks as the No. 1 golfer in the world and the record for most total weeks at No. 1. Woods is an 11-time PGA Player of the Year, which is also a record. He won 15 major championships, trailing only Jack Nicklaus' 18. Woods was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2021. Sam Snead , 82 WINS

Snead's longevity was extremely impressive, as his career spanned 30 years and he competed well into his 60s. In the 1965 Greater Greensboro Open, the 52-year-old became the oldest golfer to win a PGA Tour tournament -- a record he still holds today. Snead won 82 PGA Tour events and seven majors. He was the PGA Golfer of the Year in 1949 and a three-time PGA Tour money list winner. He earned the PGA Tour's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998 and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.

Jack Nicklaus , 73 WINS

Jack Nicklaus was widely regarded as the greatest golfer in the world during the 1960s and 1970s. He continued winning majors in the 1980s - with his final victory coming at 46 years old. Nicklaus holds the record for most major championships (18) and most Masters (six), and he's tied for the most PGA Championships (five) and U.S. Opens (four). "The Golden Bear" also finished as a runner-up 19 times in majors. From 1970 to 1979, Nicklaus never finished worse than eighth at the Masters. In 44 majors over that span, he missed just one cut. Nicklaus was a five-time PGA Player of the Year and the PGA Tour's money list winner 8 times. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.

Ben Hogan , 64 WINS

Hogan won nine majors -- tied for fourth most all time -- and he's one of only five golfers to win all four major championships. Hogan was a four-time PGA Player of the Year. In 1943, Hogan was drafted and joined the U.S. Army and over the next three years, he rose to the rank of second lieutenant. In 1946, he returned to the PGA Tour and won 13 events. Hogan was named the AP's Male Athlete of the Year in 1953 and inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.

Arnold Palmer , 62 WINS

Palmer was a fan favorite who helped golf skyrocket in popularity. He won seven majors -- with all his victories coming between 1958 and 1964 -- and he was the first golfer to win four Masters. Palmer was a two-time PGA Player of the Year and a four-time PGA Tour money list winner. He earned the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974. Palmer also launched many products, owned and designed golf courses, and co-founded The Golf Channel.

Golf careers are ultimately defined by success in major championships, so it’s worth looking at who has the most major wins of all-time.

Only 14 players have ever notched at least six major wins. Learn more about them below as we take a closer look at many of the game’s greats who rank among the most prolific major champions.

T12. Phil Mickelson, Nick Faldo and Lee Trevino: 6 major wins

You almost can’t find a more fascinating collection of golfers than Mickelson, Faldo and Trevino. They all went about their business in wildly different ways, but still landed on six major wins apiece.

Mickelson won the PGA Championship in 2021 at Kiawah Island, making him the oldest player at 50 years old to win a major.

The Lefty, who hoisted the Wanamaker Trophy , showed that he’s still capable of thriving at the highest level of golf, and it was also some nice payback for several other majors that didn’t go his way. With his short game brilliance that rivals anyone in history, Mickelson is a six-time runner-up at the U.S. Open, the only leg missing from his career Grand Slam.

In addition, at the 2016 Open Championship, “Phil the Thrill” finished 11 strokes ahead of third-place finisher J.B. Holmes. Unfortunately, Henrik Stenson denied Mickelson a second Claret Jug, winning by three in a duel for the ages at Royal Troon.

Faldo is a fascinating case. When you watched CBS golf telecasts, you heard just how technical and cerebral his perspective is on the game. During his prime, Faldo overhauled his swing, which was unheard of at the time. He won all his majors thereafter.

A big reason the Masters is missing from Trevino’s major resume stemmed from his distaste for Augusta National, which he later walked back on. Trevino never finished better than 10th there but managing to win each of the other three majors multiple times is a testament to how great he was.

T7. Arnold Palmer and four other golfers have 7 major wins

Harry Vardon dominated the Open Championship, and took his game stateside at the dawn of the 20th century to prove he could win on U.S. soil, too. Vardon was a runner-up twice at the U.S. Open, too. The trophy awarded to the winner of European Tour’s Race to Dubai is named in his honor, beginning in 1937.

Although he never competed in the PGA Championship and started teeing it up in the Masters much later in his career, Bobby Jones was actually considered a career Grand Slam champion during his prime. That’s because the U.S. and British Amateur titles were deemed majors at the time.

You’ll notice that Gene Sarazen achieved the career Grand Slam, and he couldn’t have done it in more dramatic fashion. A double eagle during the final round of the 1935 Masters’ forced an 18-hole playoff, which Sarazen won by five strokes.

Sam Snead was a steady winner, and is tied with Tiger Woods for the all-time PGA Tour wins mark . He finished second in the U.S. Open four times to just miss out on the career Slam.

Finally, if you’re going to miss out on one major it’s probably best off being the PGA. Arnold Palmer was a groundbreaking golf superstar who did a whole lot of winning in a very short span, as all his majors came in a seven-year window.

Palmer’s rally from seven strokes back at the 1960 U.S. Open made for one of the best finishes in major history.

6. Tom Watson: 8 major wins

• The Open Championship (5): 1975, 1977, 1980, 1982, 1983
• Masters Tournament (2): 1977, 1981
• U.S. Open: 1982

Only Harry Vardon managed more Open Championship wins than Tom Watson, but that’s not entirely fair to the latter. Watson got it done in an era of much fiercer competition with larger fields of contenders to fend off.

The most famous major victories of Watson’s career came when he bested Nicklaus head-to-head twice.

In the 1977 Open, the pair’s “Duel in the Sun” at Turnberry saw Watson prevail by one stroke. Several years later, at the U.S. Open, a chip-in birdie at the par-3 17th hole and a birdie at the last in the final round to best Nicklaus by two.

Combine all those instances of major glory with two green jackets, and it adds up to quite an outstanding resume for Watson.

T4. Gary Player and Ben Hogan: 9 major wins

Two vastly different players who both achieved the career Grand Slam, Gary Player and Ben Hogan are among the five golfers to ever win all four majors.

Hogan was a phenomenal ball-striker and a longer hitter, whereas Player relied on accuracy, an excellent short game and putting to make up for his lack of distance off the tee. Player was a much more global player, but Hogan eventually proved himself across the pond by winning the 1953 Open Championship.

Fans rallied around Hogan after his near-fatal car accident in 1949, and the fact that he won six majors thereafter just goes to show his greatness and how fierce of a competitor he was.

3. Walter Hagen: 11 major wins

• U.S. Open (2): 1914, 1919
• The Open Championship (4): 1922, 1924, 1928, 1929
• PGA Championship (5): 1921, 1924, 1925, 1926, 1927

Walter Hagen was a golf pioneer on so many fronts. In addition to being among the elite major champions to ever play, he was the first U.S.-born player to win the Open Championship, and the first golfer to become a millionaire from career earnings.

Between his influence on increasing tournament purses, his tasteful fashion sense and outstanding performance as a player, Hagen’s legacy is truly towering.

Perhaps the most impressive of his achievements was Hagen’s four consecutive PGA Championships. That was back when the major was played in a match play format, and the mind games he used to play with opponents made Hagen a devastating adversary to deal with.

The Masters is the only major missing for Hagen, but bear in mind, the first event was played in 1934, when Hagen was 41 years old. Especially back then, golfers were past their prime at that point. Thus, it doesn’t take away from Hagen’s impact at all that he lacks a green jacket.

2. Tiger Woods: 15 major wins

• Masters Tournament (5): 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2019
• U.S. Open (3): 2000, 2002, 2008
• The Open Championship (3): 2000, 2005, 2006
• PGA Championship (4): 1999, 2000, 2006, 2007

It’s truly stunning that Tiger Woods accounts for so many of golf’s all-time iconic moments by himself, with so many of them coming on a major stage.

Breaking through with a 12-shot romp at the 1997 Masters, Woods revolutionized golf as we know it. From making fitness a greater part of the game, to lifting prize money to unfathomable heights and inspiring a generation all around the world, golf became cooler because of Woods’ persona and dominance.

The apex of Woods’ heyday came at the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, where he lapped the field by 15 strokes. It was just beyond mind-boggling how far ahead of his peers Woods was at that particular event.

A long major drought ensued following the 2008 U.S. Open, when a hobbled Woods willed his way through an 18-hole playoff and claimed the prize at Torrey Pines. His personal life went off the rails, and injuries continued to plague him for a long time.

But Tiger eventually roared back, shocking the world with his win at the 2019 Masters Tournament that ranks among the most epic comebacks in sports history.

1. Jack Nicklaus: 18 major wins

• Masters Tournament (6): 1963, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1975, 1986
• PGA Championship (5): 1963, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1980
• U.S. Open (4): 1962, 1967, 1972, 1980
• The Open Championship (3): 1966, 1970, 1978

A record that may never be broken. Jack Nicklaus finished second in 19 majors, so his total could’ve been so much higher, but as it stands, anyone planning on catching him has their work cut out.

Nicklaus was the ultimate competitor, and as he ascended in the game, had to contend with the likes of Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and many others. The Golden Bear was clearly the best of them all, showing remarkable consistency and a little late-career magic to add to his all-time majors mark.

While you can’t discount the greatness of any of Nicklaus’ major triumphs, he probably saved his best for last at the 1986 Masters, where he seized the green jacket at age 46 with a stunning rally. His seven-under final round of 65 earned Nicklaus a one-stroke victory at Augusta National.

Most PGA Tour tournament victories

The most tournament wins on the PGA Tour is 82, achieved by Sam Snead (USA) between 1936 and 1965, and equalled by Tiger Woods (USA) between 1996 and 2019.

Woods equalled Sam Snead’s long-standing record of 82 PGA Tour wins with victory at the Zozo Championship on 28 October 2019 at the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in Chiba, Japan. His first victory occurred at the 1996 Las Vegas Invitational.

Sam Snead’s first officially recognised PGA Tour victory occurred at the one-day, 36-hole 1936 West Virginia Closed Pro, while his last was the 1965 Greater Greensboro Open. His official tally was put at 84 before being reduced to 81 by the PGA TOUR in 1987, who later settled on 82 when it recognised his triumph at the 1946 The Open Championship. Seven of Snead’s 82 wins were achieved at major championships, compared to 15 by Woods.

In professional golf, the PGA Tour all-time wins list is a who's who of the best golfers ever to play the game. Just to get into the top 10 of the list of most career PGA Tour wins, a player needs 42 PGA Tour titles, a staggering figure.

Two men share the record for the most PGA Tour wins.

With his win in the 2019 Zozo Championship in Japan, Tiger Woods tied Sam Snead for the all-time PGA Tour wins record at 82 official victories. Of course, Woods has plenty more wins than that in his career, as both an amateur and pro, but Woods has wins in 82 PGA Tour-sanctioned tournaments.

Sam Snead has 82 PGA Tour-recognized wins. Snead's career, however, unfolded at a time when the modern PGA Tour didn't exist. The PGA Tour has recognized specific wins in Snead's career as being PGA Tour official. However, the record was always a little dubious.

Jack Nicklaus is third on the all-time wins list with 73 wins, with Ben Hogan (64) and Arnold Palmer (62) rounding out the all-time top five.

In total, 18 players have amassed 30 or more wins in their PGA Tour careers. Only two players born after 1975 have at least 30 wins: Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.

Players that win at least 20 times on the PGA Tour are awarded a lifetime membership.

Tiger Woods is widely considered the greatest golfer to ever live. The now 44-year-old has 81 total wins and 15 major championships to his name. In his prime, Woods dominated the sport more impressively than maybe any other athlete ever has. Although he’s possibly the greatest of all time, Woods actually doesn’t hold the record for the most wins in PGA Tour history by himself. So, who is tied with Woods, and how many wins do they have?

Right behind Tiger Woods, names such as Jack Nicklaus , Ben Hogan, and Arnold Palmer are often mentioned as the next best on the all-time list.

Nicklaus won an astounding 73 times on the PGA Tour. From 1962-1978, Nicklaus didn’t go a single year without winning at least twice. He won an average of four tournaments per year during that span. Nicklaus also has the most major victories of all time with 18. Not even Woods can claim that many.

Hogan had one of the sweetest swings in golf history, and it translated to 64 victories on Tour. In 1946, Hogan won a ridiculous 13 times. He also won eight majors in the span of six years during his career.

Palmer is right behind Hogan with 62 PGA Tour wins. He also won eight major championships, including four victories at The Masters. Along with Niklaus and Gary Player, Palmer hit the opening tee shot at Augusta National until his death in 2016.

Sam Snead isn’t as popular a name as Nicklaus, Hogan, or Palmer, but he actually has more wins than all three legends. In fact, Snead is tied with Tiger Woods for the most wins in PGA Tour history with 82 victories.

Snead won his first tournament in 1936 and his last in 1965. The 29-year gap between his first and last victories is the largest in golf history.

Snead won seven major championships during his career, and he nearly won the career grand slam. He never won the U.S. Open despite finishing as the runner-up in the event four times.

Tiger Woods needs just one more win to break Sam Snead’s record

Tiger Woods might already be considered the greatest golfer of all time, but he can seal his place atop the PGA Tour mountain with another victory. Woods needs just one more win to reach 83 and pass Sam Snead for the most all-time.

It’s not out of the question for the 44-year-old Woods. After all, he’s the defending Masters champion. He also won his 82nd tournament just nine months ago at the 2019 ZOZO Championship.

Woods has been playing a lighter schedule this year, but that’s so he can stay healthy and fresh for the majors and bigger tournaments coming up in the fall. Barring a catastrophic injury or an early retirement, Woods will get to 83 and cement his status as the greatest golfer to ever live.

The Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open and Open Championship (also known as the British Open) make up golf’s four majors. They are the pinnacles of achievement in the game and are looked at as the defining factors for greatness amongst the best players to ever pick up a golf club. Here is a list of the golfers, past and present, with the most major titles to their names.

1. Jack Nicklaus - 18 Major Championships

Jack Nicklaus’ unmatched major championship run spanned from 1962 to 1986 as the “Golden Bear” won major championships in three decades. Jack won multiple majors in a year an incredible four times, doing so in 1963, ’66, ’72 and ’80. He won at least one major in four consecutive years from 1970-1973, and rattled off seven of his 18 major triumphs in a six-year span from 1970-1975. Records are made to be broken, but it’s hard to imagine anybody breaking Nicklaus’ record of 18 major championships.

Despite sitting a few major titles short of Jack Nicklaus, many golf fans and historians alike consider Tiger Woods the best golfer of all time. Tiger absolutely blitzed the Tour by winning 14 of his 15 majors in a span of just 12 years from 1997 - 2008. He became the first golfer of all time to hold all four major championships at one time, what is now referred to as the “Tiger Slam” when he won the PGA Championship, U.S. Open and Open Championship in 2000 and followed it up with a Masters win in early 2001. He won the 2008 U.S. Open on a broken leg and added perhaps the most impressive major championship victory to his resume by winning the 2019 Masters, 22 years after his maiden major win.

Walter Hagen won all 11 of his major championships before the fourth major, the Masters, even existed. Hagen’s final major triumph came at the 1929 Open Championship, five years before the first Masters was played. Although he competed in six Masters Tournaments in his career, his best finish was T11 and he was unable to accomplish what is today known as the career grand slam. Hagen did however win four consecutive PGA Championships from 1924-27 and rack up 11 major championships in an era when only three majors were contested each year.

Ben Hogan had an incredible six-year run from 1948-1953, winning all nine of his majors in that span. In 1953 he won three of the year’s four majors, the U.S. Open, Masters and Open Championship, and did not enter the PGA Championship due to issues relating to his serious car crash in 1949. He completed the career grand slam with his 1953 Open Championship win, which proved to be the final major of his career.

T he roots of the PGA Tour can be traced all the way back to 1916. Since then, it has gone on to become the most prominent golf tour in the world. Over the years, the PGA Tour has undergone several changes in terms of structure, tournaments, rules etc.

The 2024 season recently wrapped up with the Tour Championship at East Lake. Although the FedEx Fall events are yet to roll, the FedEx Cup playoffs are generally considered to be final events of the PGA Tour season. This year, US golfer Scottie Scheffler was the clear star of the show. The world no. 1 won six PGA Tour titles, including the Masters. To add to that, he also won gold medal at the Paris Olympics and the season-ending Tour Championship.

The 28-year-old undoubtedly ruled the field this season with his consistent play. He found a great competitor in compatriot Xander Schauffele , who picked up two major titles at the PGA Championship and the Open Championship. Had it not been for Scottie Scheffler's extraordinary show, 2024 would have been considered as Schauffele's year.

However, despite of their spectacular performances in 2024, neither Scheffler nor Schauffele has the most number of wins in a single PGA Tour season. So who does? Here we take a look.

6) vijay singh (2004) : 9 wins.

Fijian golfer Vijay Singh turned professional in 1982 and joined the PGA Tour in 1993. His first win on the tour came in 2004, the year that went on to become one of the best of his career. That year, he dethroned Tiger Woods from the world no. 1 spot and ended his 264 week streak. Singh also picked up his third major title with the PGA Championship. He was also the 2004 Player of the Year.

5) Tiger Woods (2000) : 9 wins

Tiger Woods is easily one of the greatest golfers in history. After a thriving amateur career, Woods turned pro at the age of 20 in 1996. And in just five short years, he went on to have possibly one of the best PGA Tour seasons of his career. In 2000, he raked in nine titles, out of which six were consecutive wins, breaking Ben Hogan's 1948 winning streak record. In the same year, the then 24-year-old Woods became the youngest golfer to achieve a Career Grand Slam.

4) Paul Runyan (1933) : 9 wins

Former US golfer Paul Runyan was one of the top golfers in the 1930s. Starting out as a caddie, he turned pro at the age of 17. Out of his total 29 career wins, he picked up nine titles in 1933. This was a year before the first-ever Masters tournament. The World Golf Hall of Fame inductee later went on to become a coach to several prominent players.

3) Ben Hogan (1948 and 1946) : 10 and 13 wins respectively

Former US golfer Ben Hogan is one of the greatest golfers ever. He turned pro at the age of 17 in 1930. His initial years on the professional circuit were trying to say the least and it took him a decade to win his first individual PGA Tour title. His winning run was interrupted by the WWII, where he served in the US Army Air Forces. Soon after the end of the war, Hogan returned to his form. He picked up 13 wins in 1946 and 10 in 1948.

2) Sam Snead (1950) : 11 wins

Former US golfer Sam Snead is widely considered of one of the greatest in this sport. He taught himself to play golf with clubs made out of tree limbs during the Great Depression. Snead joined the PGA Tour in 1936 and found immediate success winning a title in his rookie year. His most successful year came in 1950 when he recorded eleven wins in the season. Till date, he shares the record of most number of PGA Tour wins with Tiger Woods at a whopping 82 victories.

1) Byron Nelson (1945) : 18 wins

Former US golfer Byron Nelson was easily a history maker in the sport. He turned professional in 1932 and found success. In 1945, he won 18 titles, out of which 11 were consecutive. Both of these records remain unbroken to this day. Simply put, it is the greatest single season to have been played in the history of the sport. During his incredible run, he also bagged the PGA Championship, which was the only major to take place that year. The Bob Jones award recepient was the first golfer to have a tournament (Byron Nelson Classic) named after him on the PGA Tour.

The 18-time major winner won his first Masters in 1963. Twenty-three years later in 1986, the then-46-year-old scored his sixth and final Masters victory -- becoming the oldest winner in tournament history.

Are you an average golfer? And what would it mean if you were? After all, this is golf, a sport of such random, unforeseen outcomes it tends to mock the notion that anything hews to an average — or even a pattern. 

But most golfers, like anyone engaged in a pursuit that usually involves keeping score, wonder what defines a typical, standard result. 

The USGA has for decades tracked the 9- and 18-hole scores of millions of golfers through a handicap system. About 3.2 million players in the U.S. currently post their scores to maintain a Handicap Index®, a sophisticated tool that is a measurement of a player’s demonstrated ability on a course of standard playing difficulty, which is tailored to the course and tees they are playing on a particular day to provide them with a Course Handicap™.

Currently, the average Handicap Index is 14.2 for men and 28.7 for women. The cohort of golfers with a Handicap Index tends to include a number of more seriously engaged golfers who also play more regularly. The National Golf Foundation, which conducts monthly and annual participation surveys of more than 36,000 golfers, concludes that the average 18-hole score for men and women in the United States is about 94. 

But there are caveats to any calculation of the average golfer score and they are widely understood in the golf community. Millions of recreational golfers who only play occasionally do not keep score. Other golfers misunderstand the Rules of Golf and thereby write down inaccurate scores or are broad-minded about the tranquilizing value of a mulligan. And still others, to put it kindly, fib to either inflate, or reduce, their scores. 

Adding to the dynamic over the past few years is the substantial pandemic-related influx of new golfers who are considerably younger, more likely female and drawn from more diverse backgrounds. This is also a group attracted to less traditional golf venues like short courses and par-3 courses. Concurrently, there has been a dramatic increase in nine-hole league participation nationwide, which has produced a surge in the number of nine-hole rounds. 

In this evolving landscape, many in golf’s leadership positions see an opportunity to unite newer and existing golfers. At the crux of that movement would be encouraging, or exhorting, more golfers of any type to get a Handicap Index — and central to that recruitment is making golfers realize the handicap is not solely designed for use in competitions. Yes, it is essential for many championships, but its myriad, ancillary benefits extend far beyond tournaments and contests. 

“Even if it’s a casual foursome or twosome of golfers and they want to play a game where the losers buy the post-round beers or appetizers, the World Handicap System becomes the great equalizer that gives everyone a fair chance to win,” said Lee Rainwater, the USGA’s director of handicap education and outreach. “It’s the cornerstone of the system… the abilities of the different players might not be the same, but with a Handicap Index the round becomes fairer and more enjoyable for all.” 

Rainwater sees other benefits and advantages to having a Handicap Index, like allowing golfers to track their progress on a continuing basis using objective benchmarks of improvement. More than a million golfers in the U.S. utilize the Golf Handicap and Information Network (GHIN) App for score posting, which allows them to not only track their hole-by-hole scores but, if they choose, to enter granular details about each round: fairways hit (and where the misses went), total putts, greens in regulation, etc. Those details are aggregated to offer a statistical portrait of the golfer that identifies areas to work on.  

It’s also worth noting that golfers who use the GHIN App have the option to upgrade to use Enhanced GPS features, which expands its GPS capabilities to include an approach shot “heat map,” a putt-break map, shot tracking and other features.  

The Handicap Index is also a vehicle of opportunity — it’s often required if a golfer wants to accept an invitation to play in a member-guest tournament as well as at many charity or civic group outings. Since an Index is obtained through membership in a state or regional Allied Golf Association (AGA), that affiliation often opens doors to a day of golf at premier private or public golf facilities (typically promoted by AGAs as “Member Play Days”). 

And don’t overlook the capacity to measure something intrinsic. How do you stack up to other golfers? Are you average? Or better? (Ignore the alternatives.)  

Moreover, in the journey to calling yourself a golfer, getting a Handicap Index can be a meaningful step toward feeling connected to the greater golf tribe. 

“The notion of community is very strong in golf,” said Rainwater, specifically referring to the World Handicap System that was established under the stewardship of the USGA and The R&A in 2020. “It is the first time that there was a singular calculation of golfers’ abilities around the globe. In this community, golfers who are playing at the course down the road or a golf course in Australia, South America or Japan are working from the same playing-ability computation.” 

The message seems to strike a chord, as nearly 450,000 golfers obtained a handicap through the USGA for the first time in 2023. 

There is another more altruistic, down-to-earth reason to establish a Handicap Index that could be filed under the category of public service. It relates to the awkward, ubiquitous interactions on the first tees of crowded golf courses everywhere, when strangers are combined to create a foursome. Often, the golfers want to play a game for the fun of it, and maybe some reward, which leads to the question: “What’s your handicap?” 

Too often, one of your newest golf friends pauses for a long, uncomfortable few seconds, then mumbles: “Ah, maybe about … ” 

As Rainwater explained, golf is a game of honor, and the Handicap Index helps. “You don’t have to say you’re about a 12,” he said. “You can say, ‘I am a 12.2.’ At its core, golf is a social game. Having a handicap is a versatile connector meant to add to everyone’s overall enjoyment.” 

The other good news is that in recent years, the USGA, affiliated golf governing bodies and other constituencies in the sport have diligently combined to make it far easier to get a handicap. While there are various avenues, one of the simplest might be visiting usga.org/getahandicap . 

“We’re serving as a funnel, a facilitator — meaning that by typing in very basic information, golfers will not only get a Handicap Index, they’ll also get better connected to their local AGA,” Rainwater said. 

The World Handicap System also has become more welcoming to the expanding world of golf facilities. Beginning this year, nine-hole courses as short as 750 yards are eligible for a Course Rating™ and Slope Rating® , a reduction from the previous minimum of 1,500 yards. Similarly, the eligible minimum for 18-hole courses was reduced from 3,000 yards to 1,500 yards. 

Furthermore, if inclement weather or darkness cuts your golf day short after 15 holes, for example, you can still post the hole-by-hole scores and the system will interpret the results for handicap purposes. In another 2024 WHS update, a nine-hole score now counts immediately toward a player’s handicap rather than waiting to combine it with another nine-hole score from a different day. 

Since so many daily activities are now conducted via hand-held devices, it’s no surprise various apps connected to golf services have enlisted millions of golfers as users. Score posting is usually a popular accompanying feature and many providers have partnered with the USGA to offer access to a Handicap Index, with roughly 30 more apps in the pipeline to do so in the near future. 

The National Golf Foundation and the USGA have likewise shared data to corroborate their findings on the “average” golfer. The NGF, which has identified an on-course United States participant base of 26.6 million, reports that nearly three-fourths of those golfers are male. Perhaps more revealing, the percentage of female golfers in America (26 percent) is the highest on record. The average age of a golfer is 43.5, although women golfers are about 4.5 years younger. People of color represent 23 percent of the American golfer cohort, which is the highest proportion of non-white golfers recorded by the foundation. The typical golfer plays about 20 rounds annually. 

But Greg Nathan, the NGF president and chief executive, chooses to look beyond the  statistics when envisioning the average golfer. 

“What every golfer has in common is they enjoy the activity itself — they enjoy the challenge, enjoy being outdoors, enjoy the exercise and the camaraderie of being with other people who enjoy the same activity,” said Nathan, whose foundation has also identified another 18.5 million people who participate at golf entertainment venues, stand-alone driving ranges and/or businesses with golf simulators. “There’s an amazing passion for this crazy game.” 

That passion is not only swelling by nearly every measure, the growth is intriguingly varied. Rainwater, for example, noted that recent visitors to the usga.org/getahandicap page who have signed up for a Handicap Index are a mix of less experienced golfers and those who have clearly been playing for years, since they’re posting scores in the low 70s. 

“Both of these cohorts are really diving in; it’s a very engaged group,” he said with a hearty chuckle. 

So, are you an average golfer? 

One of golf’s greatest charms is its versatility, variety and variability. It can mean something different to everyone. That may be the game’s foremost triumph.

Graeme Storm: 25 years since Amateur Championship win at Royal County Down 

Revered around the world, Royal County Down is a course that holds a special place for many a golfer. For Graeme Storm, it is the scene of his most meaningful victory.

It was just over 25 years ago when the Englishman won the Amateur Championship – regarded as the pinnacle achievement in the amateur game – at the links venue in Northern Ireland.

The triumph was the catapult for Storm’s three-decade long professional career, which saw him win two DP World Tour titles, amass 500 starts and compete in all four Major Championships.

One of his wins on the DP World Tour saw him edge out none other than Rory McIlroy to win the South African Open, just a few months after he thought he’d lost his card at the end of the previous season, but for Storm the memories of his triumph a quarter of a century ago live fondest.

“I won two really big tournaments on the DP World Tour, and winning the play-off against McIlroy in 2017 is huge,” he tells the DP World Tour.

“But to win The Amateur Championship is like the holy grail of the amateur game for me, in the sense that it opens so many doors, it gives you that platform to be able to go on and have that career as a professional.”

As Storm alludes to, he ticked off a few career ambitions in one fell swoop as he earned invites to play at The Open Championship and the Masters Tournament. Dreams fulfilled.

A young amateur in the 1990s, success was not infrequent. Representing his country around the world, he won the under-16s Boys Championships, the English Boys Stroke Play Championship, the English Junior Championship and finally, the Amateur Championship.

A class apart from the rest of the field at the 1999 Amateur Championship, Storm won the title with a dominant 7&6 victory in the final. He followed that by winning two points out of four to help Great Britain & Ireland to victory at the 1999 Walker Cup, before turning professional after the 2000 Masters.

“It provides you the belief to go into the paid ranks,” adds Storm, who now works as a referee on the DP World Tour and European Challenge Tour alongside coaching and media opportunities.

“Although I did struggle at first, I would say the leap now is smaller than it was back then," he said. "Us top amateurs weren’t as close to being professional as now I would say.”

For someone who played on the hallowed grounds of Augusta National, a key factor behind how highly Storm views his Amateur Championship success is where it came.

“Royal County Down, what a venue to win at,” he says.

“Really impressive. One of the best courses, not only in UK and Ireland, but the world.”

Often voted among the top layouts, what is that sets it apart from much of its competition?

“It’s got spectacular views, it’s a very different links test to others with regards to the blind tee-shots. It’s just one of the best places in the world to play golf.”

This year the course plays host to its fifth Irish Open, but only its second since the DP World Tour’s inception in 1972, having staged the event in 2015.

Storm was there then too, and while he may have missed the cut at a time when he was struggling for form, the chance to play at a course that resonates so much with him meant a lot.

“The Irish crowds are great wherever you play golf," he reflects.

“It was really special for me to go back to County Down. I didn’t play well, I was going through a really tough time in my career. The golf course plays really tough when the weather is not good, so fingers crossed for the guys this week.

“For me personally, to be able to go and spend a bit of time at Mourne Golf Club (a neighbour course), have a Guinness and a chat with some of the members was great.

"They really embraced me when I won the Amateur, giving me membership, and while I don’t get the chance to go back it was a great memory.”

But it is his association as a past winner at Royal County Down that Storm will forever cherish.
