British architect Henry Lanchester has designed its exterior, which is of golden-yellow sandstone.

The palace has three parts:

• Part One: the residence of the Jodhpur royal family
• Part Two: a luxurious heritage hotel managed by the Taj Group
• Part Three: open to tourists and travelers to explore the grand hall, museum, and beautiful gardens.

Here’s a fantastic thing: a museum within the palace has vintage cars, antique clocks, and exquisite artifacts. You can visit to get a glimpse into the history and lifestyle of the royal family.

5. Clock Tower and Sardar Market

Jodhpur’s Clock Tower is locally known as Ghanta Ghar. It was constructed in the late 19th century to honor Maharaja Sardar Singh.

Like most clock towers in Indian cities, it stands as the chaos of the city. You can gaze at it, admire it, or take selfies with it — there’s no cost. However, you must get a ticket if you wish to climb up.

The lights added to it add a mystic appearance to the night. And if you’re someone who loves architecture — it is sure to hook you.

Even if architecture isn’t your thing, you’d love shopping in the Sardar Market, only a few meters from the clock tower. You can find souvenirs in these markets at an affordable rate.

6. Mandore Garden

Another place you should include in your list of Jodhpur places to visit is Mandore Gardens.

Mandore Garden is a beautiful complex comprising cenotaphs of the Rathore dynasty royal families. The environment is lush green and picturesque, with delicate architectural marvels.

Mandore Garden has monuments dedicated to the Maharajas of the Marwar region. These red sandstone structures are intricately designed, which attracts history buffs, photoholics, and architecture lovers alike.

You’ll find the Hall of Heroes in the garden, showcasing statues of Rajput heroes and deities.

As we said, Mandore Gardens is not just about historical structures. You can stroll through lush green lawns, relax on the grass fields, and appreciate the peace there.

For the ones who love capturing, you’ll have a great time here. Additionally, whether you’re a local or not, Mandore Gardens is a great spot to have a fun picnic with your friends and family.

7. Bishnoi Village Safari

We’d covered almost all the Jodhpur places to visit that we’d shortlisted, but there was still a day left. We weren’t considering the Bishnoi village safari earlier, but since we’d had some time, everyone thought — why not.

So, who are the Bishnois, and what is this village safari? 

The Bishnois community profoundly connects with nature and is conscious of environmental conservation. They live in a village near Jodhpur, which still hosts wild animals.

Further, the Bishnoi village safari will introduce you to the traditions and sustainable lifestyle of the Bishnoi community. You can see blackbucks, deer, and various bird species in their natural habitats. You’ll also witness artisans crafting clay pots and traditional handicrafts.

Moreover, you can also see cultural performances like folk dances and music in this village setting if you book a more extensive package.

Ticket Price : Rates for the safari can vary. We booked the safari for INR 2000 (for 5 people).

Local Delicacies You Should Try In Jodhpur

Beside several Jodhpur places to visit, the city is a paradise for food lovers. Some dishes and places you should definitely try:

• Dal Baati Churma consists of round balls (Baati) made from wheat, delicious lentils, and sweetened crushed wheat (Churma). If you want to experience this authentic dish, visiting a local eatery is best.
• Mirchi Vada is a spicy snack that locals love. It’s made by stuffing potatoes, dipping them in gram flour batter, and deep-frying until golden.
• Makhaniya Lassi is a yogurt, cream, and sugar drink. 
• Pyaaz Ki Kachori is deep-fried and spicy onions. It’s a popular street food item found in many local markets of India.
• Gatte Ki Sabzi involves cooking gram flour dumplings in a yogurt-based gravy. It’s a vegetarian dish that presents the rich flavors of the region.

You can either walk or book a taxi/cab. Major places in Jodhpur include Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada, Toorji Ka Jhalra, Clock Tower, and Umaid Bhawan Palace.

Mandore Garden and Bishnoi Village Safari are a bit outside the city. We suggest booking a cab or taking your private vehicle.

Best Time to Visit Jodhpur

The ideal time to explore all of Jodhpur places to visit is from October to March during the winter months. 

The weather is pleasant with cool temperatures, making it suitable for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Days are sunny, and nights are relatively more relaxed. This is when you can explore the city comfortably without the scorching summer sun.

However, if you prefer fewer crowds and can endure the heat, consider visiting during the summer months from April to June or during the monsoon season from July to September.

Just be prepared for the scorching heat during these times and take the necessary precautions to stay hydrated and cool.

Jodhpur Itinerary: 2 Perfect Days in the Blue City (2024)

Jodhpur, India’s so-called Blue City , is one of my favourite cities in the country. With its iconic blue houses, beautiful fort and delicious food, this is a city that should definitely be on your itinerary for Rajasthan . This 2-day Jodhpur itinerary will bring you to the city’s highlights.

Located in the North of India , Jodhpur can easily be combined with other beautiful cities like Jaipur , the Pink City and Udaipur , the City of Lakes . It’s a city unlike any other and there are plenty of nice things to do there. I ended up loving Jodhpur so much that I visited it two times and stayed here for a total of two weeks!

But without further ado, here’s a useful guide on how to spend 2 amazing days in Jodhpur, India’s beautiful Blue City .

Itinerary for 2 Days In Jodhpur

This itinerary for 2 days in Jodhpur includes the best places to visit in this city. Depending on your interests and preferences, you might want to switch some things up to spend more time in the places you like the most.

To make it a little easier for you, you will find a day-to-day itinerary and a map at the end of this post as well.

Day 1: Forts, blue houses and stepwells

The first day of this 2-day Jodhpur itinerary will bring you along the city’s most famous sights, which are all pretty close to one another.

Mehrangarh Fort

This gigantic fort is one of the most famous landmarks in India and it’s easy to understand why. Mehrangarh Fort towers above the blue city and it’s one of the things that you cannot miss on a visit to Jodhpur.

The fort was initially built by Rajput ruler Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur, in 1459. It was expanded in the 17th century, though.

According to the legend, Rao Jodha had to chase away a hermit who lived on this hill first. When the hermit refused to leave, the ruler sought the help of the Hindu deity Karni Mata. She managed to chase the hermit away and laid down the first foundation stone of Mehrangarh Fort.

You will find quite some spectacular sights at this fort. These include various palaces , beautiful courtyards , an interesting museum and a small temple (Chamunda Mataji Temple). Like with many historical landmarks in Rajasthan , I was astonished by the place’s beautiful details.

Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

The Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park is right next to Mehrangarh Fort. It was created in 2006 to restore the place’s biodiversity. You will find plenty of native plants here, which is great to see as, not so long ago, this was almost barren land.

The park can be entered through the visitor centre, which is an 800 m (0,5 mi) walk from the fort. You will find a wide rocky wasteland here that offers beautiful views over Jodhpur and the fort.

Note that it’s only possible to visit the area on foot and it tends to get quite hot in Rajasthan, so don’t forget to bring enough water and sunscreen.

Jaswant Thada

This beautiful, white-marbled cenotaph (an empty grave) was built by Maharaja Sardar Singh in 1899 in memory of his father Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. It’s often called the Taj Mahal of Marwar and boasts some amazing architecture.

Inside, you will find portraits of the rulers of Jodhpur. There’s also a small lake, a beautiful, perfectly maintained garden and three other cenotaphs on the grounds of Jaswant Thada.

Jaswant Thada is a 10 to 15-minute walk (or short auto rickshaw ride) from Mehrangarh Fort and Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park, so it’s ideal to combine these three places.

After visiting Jaswant Thada, you can have lunch at one of Jodhpur’s many restaurants .

Blue houses

One of the best things to do in Jodhpur, and the thing I enjoyed the most, is to wander around the city’s narrow streets and alleys in search of the beautiful blue houses. This is something that cannot be missed on any itinerary for Jodhpur!

Do note that, even though Jodhpur is called the blue city , not all of the city’s houses are blue . You will find these houses in particular areas, but even here, not all the houses are blue. It’s important to know this before going to Jodhpur because I’ve heard that some people end up being a little disappointed.

Blue is a recurrent theme in Jodhpur, however, and this city is incredibly photogenic. One day, I wanted to take a short walk but only came back 3 hours later because I couldn’t stop taking pictures.

Pachetia   Hill

This is one of my favourite spots in Jodhpur and it’s perfect to watch the sunset (or the sunrise if you’re an early bird).

Pachetia Hill is a peaceful place located next to the fort and it offers spectacular, almost 360-degree views of the blue houses. It’s one of these things that cannot be missed on any Jodhpur itinerary.

There are two ways to climb up Pachetia Hill and both take about 5 to 10 minutes. You will find a narrow staircase on one side and a path going up on the other side of the hill.

Day 2: Palaces and viewpoints

The first two places of day two are located outside of Jodhpur’s city centre but they’re worth heading to! You might want to hire an auto-rickshaw or scooter to reach them.

🛺  Use the Ola app to hire a rickshaw or a taxi in India. It works just like Uber and this way, you won’t have to haggle for a fair price.

Mandore Gardens

The Mandore Gardens are located in the ancient capital of Mandore. This is an 8 km (4 mi) auto-rickshaw or scooter drive from the fort. Today, this area is a suburb of Jodhpur.

You will find a collection of ancient temples and royal cenotaphs (empty tombs) here. These were abandoned when the capital was shifted to the Mehrangarh Fort area.

The Mandore Gardens are full of beautiful details. One of its most impressive monuments is the cenotaph of Maharaja Ajit Singh, which was built in 1793.

Umaid Bhawan Palace

This gigantic palace was built between 1928 and 1943 and it’s the world’s sixth-largest private residence , making it one of the most famous landmarks in Rajasthan.

While a part of the palace is the residence of the erstwhile Jodhpur royal family, parts of it were turned into a museum and luxury hotel . This palace has 347 rooms in total, after all.

The museum showcases a collection of artworks, silverware and other artefacts that once decorated the residence. You will also get a chance to learn more about the royal family here.

There’s also a showroom showcasing oldtimer cars outside of the palace. You will pass it on your way to the exit (it’s on the left). Make sure not to miss it if you’re into vintage cars.

A nice thing about the palace is that it’s perched on top of Jodhpur’s highest hill, which is a 7 km (4.5 mi) drive from Mehrangarh Fort. You will have a nice view as you go up.

I have to admit that the Umaid Bhawan Palace wasn’t my favourite place to visit in Jodhpur (although it is a beautiful palace). However, I did find it interesting to see because it gives you an insight into what some of India’s most exclusive private residences look like. That’s why I included it in this 2-day itinerary for Jodhpur.

Clock Tower and Sardar Market

The Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar) and nearby Sardar Market are bustling areas full of merchants selling anything from vegetables and spices to textiles and handicrafts. If you want to see everyday life in the blue city, then this is the place for you!

Not only is this area great to observe daily life, but it’s also the perfect place to have lunch . You will find a famous omelette shop at the main gate of Sardar Market. This place gained fame when it was featured in Lonely Planet’s guide featuring the best places to eat in Jodhpur.

If you like lassi , like me, it’s good to know that the Shri Mishrilal Hotel, which is at the clock tower, is famous for its delicious lassi.

Lastly, Sardar Market is a nice place to shop for some nice Indian souvenirs too if this is something you’re interested in. Do make sure to haggle, as vendors will ask for high prices.

Toorji Ka Jhalra Stepwell

The Toorji Ka Jhalra Stepwell is a 5-minute walk from Sardar Market. This stepwell was built in the 18th century as a drinking source for the city during periods of drought.

I love the step wells in Rajasthan because of their beautiful steps and this one is no different – the steps that descend into the well are incredibly photogenic.

The Toorji Ka Jhalra Stepwell might not be used as a stepwell anymore today, but plenty of people (mainly locals but sometimes tourists) come here to jump into the water and swim, which is quite a sight!

Map and Schedule for the Jodhpur Itinerary

The map and schedule below will help you plan your trip to Jodhpur more easily. Note that the timings are only an estimate and they may vary according to your pace and interests.

Day 1: 9:00 am: Mehrangarh Fort* 11:30 am: Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park 12:30 am: Jaswant Thada 1:30 pm: Lunch 2:30 pm: Blue City 5:30 pm: Sunset at Pachetia Hill

*If you can’t handle the heat very well, you could also head to Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park first and visit Mehrangarh Fort after that. The fort might be a little more crowded by then and Rao Jodha isn’t so touristy, that’s why I chose this order for this itinerary.

Day 2: 9:00 am: Mandore Garden 10:45 am : Umaid Bhawan Palace 1:00 pm: Lunch 2:00 pm: Clock Tower and Sardar Market 3:30 pm: Toorji Ka Jhalra Stepwell 4:00 pm: Relax at a rooftop cafe

Other Things to Do in Jodhpur if You Have More Time

Check out the places and activities below if you have more time to spare in beautiful Jodhpur. This city has got a lot to offer!

• Flying Fox Zipline: This zipline is actually a 1.5-hour tour including six ziplines! The Flying Fox Zipline can be booked at Mehrangarh Fort and it will let you fly over Jodhpur’s lakes while you can enjoy a spectacular view over the surroundings.
• Sardar Government Museum: In this museum, you will find stone sculptures, inscriptions, miniature paintings, terracotta objects, coins and much more. It’s a great place to head to if you’re a history buff and would like to learn more about the history of Jodhpur.
• Kaylana Lake: Located 8 km (5 mi) from Jodhpur, the artificial Kaylana Lake was built by Maharana Pratap in the 19th century. It’s set amidst beautiful rock formations and there are nice hiking trails around it. Kaylana Lake is also the ideal place for a picnic!
• Osian : This ancient town is 60 km (37 mi) from Jodhpur and it makes for a great day trip from the blue city. Due to its Hindu and Jain temples dating back to the 8th to the 12th century, Osian is often called the Khajuraho of Rajasthan . This town was an important trade centre until 1195 when it was attacked by the armies of Muhammad of Ghor.

How to Get to Jodhpur

Jodhpur is easy to reach by  bus ,  train  and  plane . The airport of Jodhpur is just 6 km (3 mi) from the city centre.

Note that when you’re travelling in the north of India, it’s essential to  book transportation in advance as trains and buses tend to fill up quickly.

🚂 You can easily book bus or train tickets using  12GoAsia . This is the only website I could find that accepts payments with non-Indian credit cards and it works very well.

How to Get Around Jodhpur

You can either walk , rent a scooter or hire an auto-rickshaw to get around the city. I recommend using the Ola app for the last option. Ola works just like Uber and this way, you will get a fair price immediately without having to haggle hard. Rickshaw drivers in India often charge foreigners 10 times the local price, which can be quite frustrating.

If you’re willing to spend more money, you could also hire a private car that will take you around the city.

Another way to visit Jodhpur is by taking a tour . This is perfect for you if you don’t want to organize everything yourself. GetYourGuide offers plenty of tours like this private city sightseeing tour or this blue city heritage walk .

Best Time to Visit Jodhpur

The best time to visit Jodhpur is  between October and March . This is when the weather is at its best in Rajasthan, making it one of Asia’s best winter destinations .

The summer months (April to June) are the hottest months. Although hotels will be cheaper at this time of the year, visiting the city won’t be very pleasant because of the blistering heat.

I visited Jodhpur in August and September, which is during the monsoon season (June to September). It rained from time to time (but not too much) when I was there and it was still quite hot.

Where to Stay in Jodphur

Make sure to stay close to the fort , preferably on the East side, near the Clock Tower and Sardar Market. This is where you will find most of the restaurants and hotels.

I spent 2 weeks in Jodhpur and stayed at Kesar Heritage Boutique Homestay , which I highly recommend. The rooms on the top floor are very spacious and clean, and the place is run by a friendly Rajasthani family. On top of that, the location is perfect and there’s a rooftop restaurant!

Absolutely! Jodhpur is often skipped by tourists, but it’s one of my favourite cities in India and it’s unlike any other city I’ve ever been to. With its pretty blue houses, magnificent fort and endless alleys, Jodhpur makes for a perfect travel destination in Rajasthan.

How many days are sufficient for Jodhpur?

Two days in Jodhpur is the perfect amount of time to see the city’s highlights. This being said, you could easily spend more time in the blue city, it has a lot to offer and it’s incredibly photogenic!

As a result, Jodhpur has a newly restored yet ancient stepwell, located just north of the clock tower. Built in the 1740s and called Toorji ka Jhalra, it sat stagnant for years until the owners of the heritage boutique RAAS Hotel purified the pool and sandblasted the steps. Unlike the crowded clock tower area, the blue part of Jodhpur behind the fort, known as Navchokiya, is refreshingly quiet and devoid of tourists. Magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace, completed in 1944, was one of India's last grand palaces to be built. The royal family of Jodhpur still occupies a section of it. There's an old fort, an eclectic collection of temples and cenotaphs, and a small museum in the Mandore Gardens. The gardens are beautiful, albeit unkempt in places, and used as a local picnic spot. They're worth visiting for the fantastic architecture and history of a bygone era. The best time to go is during the week when it's quietest. If you love monkeys, you'll find plenty there! Om Bana, a local citizen, was riding the bike, it got unbalanced and hit the tree. He was dead immediately.

Jodhpur is one of our favorite cities in Rajasthan. The mighty Mehrangarh Fort dominates the city skyline. Perched on a hill, the fort can be seen from almost everywhere in the city. The historic walled old city of Jodhpur, a mishmash of pretty indigo-washed houses is a joy to explore.

The former capital of the Kingdom of Marwar is best known as the Blue City of India because of its iconic blue houses in the old city.

There are quite a few theories as to why the houses are painted blue – some say that Brahmins (the highest caste) painted their houses blue (they associate the blue color with their deity Lord Shiva) to set apart themselves from the lower cast while some argue that it’s because the blue color is a good reflector of the sunrays and saves from the desert heat by keeping the houses cool and then there’s another theory according to which the copper sulfate in the blue color acts as a termite repellant.

Jodhpur has also earned the sobriquet of the Sun City of India because the city enjoys bright and sunny weather all through the year and also the rulers of Marwar worshipped the Sun God.

Day 1 of 2 Days in Jodhpur Itinerary

8 am: breakfast @ sam’s art cafe.

What better place to kickstart your first day in the blue city than the most loved cafe here? Sam’s Art Cafe is located in the heart of the Old Town and is a favorite among travelers for its quirky decor, warm and cozy vibe, A-class service, great food, and reasonable prices.

Whatever you order for breakfast, make sure to pair it with a cup of coffee because they serve the best coffee in Jodhpur.

9 am: Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

Placed at the foot of Mehrangarh Fort, this 70 hectares of eco-park showcases the biodiversity of the region. There are four walking trails (the yellow trail, the green trail, the red, and the blue trail) weaving through the park, each more beautiful than the next.

You can explore the park on your own by following a marked trail or better take a guided walk with a naturalist for greater insight into the ecology and geology unique to the region.

Another plus point of taking a local guide with you is that you get to walk through the blue trail – the trail you should do if you want to get that classic shot in which Jaswant Thada, Mehrangarh Fort, and Devkund Lake are in one frame!

11 am: Jaswant Thada

All dolled up in dazzling white makrana marble, Jaswant Thada looks stunning. No wonder it’s labeled as the Taj Mahal of Marwar .

The cenotaph was built by Maharaja Sardar Singh of Jodhpur State in the loving memory of his father Maharaja Jaswant Singh II in 1899. The beautiful edifice has served as a cremation ground for the royal family of Marwar since then.

The quiet surroundings, beautiful views, and impressive architecture make it one of the best things to do in Jodhpur.

12 pm: Mehrangarh Fort

Perched on a rocky cliff known as Bhakurcheeria (the mountain of birds), Mehrangarh dominates the skyline of Jodhpur.

It was built by Rao Jodha Rathore , a founder of Jodhpur in 1459 and since then it remains one of the finest forts in India.

The Rathores (a Rajput clan) named the fort Mehrangarh which means the Fort of the Sun because they believe them to be descendants of Lord Rama and worship the Sun God.

Built at different times, the fort has seven gates viz. Jai Pol , Fateh Pol , Gopal Pol , Lakhna Pol or Dedh Kangra Pol , Amriti Pol , Loha Pol , and Suraj Pol . Mehrangarh has expansive courtyards like Srinagar Chowk and Zenana Deodhi ; gorgeous period rooms like Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors), Phool Mahal (Palace of Flowers), Takhat Vilas , Sardar Vilas , Jhanki Mahal , Dipak Mahal , and Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace); and impressive galleries like Howdah Gallery , Palanquin Gallery , Daulat Khana , Painting Gallery , Textile Gallery , and Arms Gallery .

You can see the well-preserved old cannons along the fort ramparts and also enjoy the incredible views of the city .

We loved the Phool Mahal the most. The ceiling adorned with gold filigree and vibrant stained glass windows makes it one of a kind.

Don’t miss the handprints of sati at Loha Gate . The royal wives left their handprints before committing Jauhar . The fort also gives you a chance to enjoy folk art and music. It hosts performances throughout the day.

Located at the back of Mehrangarh Fort near Fateh Pol are the beautiful twin lakes of Ranisar and Padmasar . You can spend some quiet time here.

Before you leave the fort, get the blessings of Goddess Chamunda (manifestation of Goddess Shakti) by visiting one of the oldest and most celebrated temples of Jodhpur, Gayatri Shaktipeeth Shree Chamunda Mata Temple .

It lies close to the southern gate of Mehrangarh Fort. This is also one of the best sunset points in Jodhpur.

PS: The fort has been a popular filming site for Bollywood and Hollywood. Some of the famous movies shot here include The Dark Knight Rises, The Fall, The Darjeeling Limited, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Tere Naam, and Shuddh Desi Romance.

2 pm: Lunch @ Darikhana

A specialty restaurant by RAAS, Darikhana ticks all the boxes. Lovely setting, charming decor, perfect ambiance, flavorsome food, warm hospitality, and first-rate services – would you ask for more?

It has one of the best views of Mehrangarh Fort, of course, best enjoyed at night when the fort is all lit up.

3 pm: Catch an Afternoon Nap

Now that you’ve enough time before you get to your next stop in the Jodhpur itinerary, you can return to your hotel room for a quick yet refreshing siesta.

4:30 pm: Makhaniya Lassi at Shri Mishrilal

You gotta have (it’s a must) a chilled glass of Makhaniya Lassi at Shri Mishrilal Hotel when in Jodhpur. Made with highly compressed curd and flavored with cardamom, kewda , sugar, and milk, this thick creamy drink is worth all the hype. And why not? They’ve been making it since 1960 after all.

They are also famous for their mount-watering preparation of rabri .

5:30 pm: Hike Pachetia Hill

Climbing Pachetia Hill awards you with a bird’s eye view of the blue city, especially during sunset.

The hike starts from Singhvi Haveli . It takes 20 to 25 minutes to reach the top. Once you are done taking in the stunning vistas, don’t forget to pay respect to Goddess Jwala at Maa Jwalamukhi Devi Temple .

7:30 pm: Dinner @ Chokelao Mahal Terrace

Set in the historic fort of Mehrangarh, Chokelao Mahal Terrace extends a royal and inspiring dining experience. The rooftop restaurant opens at 7 pm and is known for its lavish dinner menu and outstanding view of the glittering fort and the city below.

It’s recommended to book your table in advance. A chauffeur-driven Jeep picks you up from the fort gate and drops you at a restaurant.

Try their chakki ki sabzi, ker sangri, and laal maas.

Day 2 of 2 Days in Jodhpur Itinerary

6:30 am: blue houses (old town) tour with breakfast.

It’s time to see the iconic blue houses that gave the city its nickname!

Wandering the narrow winding lanes dusted with an array of blue houses is one of the most authentic ways to experience the culture and history of Jodhpur.

Please be aware it’ll not be easy navigating the narrow, unpaved, and dusty labyrinthine alleyways.

You’ll have to jostle for space as cows forage through the garbage dump, dogs loiter around, motorcycles try to navigate, and kids play games. But then good things don’t come easy.

While you can very well explore the blue houses on your own, I insist you join a guided tour.

First off, it’s easy to get lost in the intricate web of bylanes the local tour guides know the city inside and out and take you deep into the alleys to find the hidden gems.

We did a Morning Heritage Walk with Bluecity Walks . The walk not only lets you discover the hidden spots but also gives you a chance to enjoy authentic Rajasthani breakfast and tea on the terrace of a 350-year-old blue Brahmin house.

If you still don’t want to sign up for a guided tour and think that it’s fun and adventurous to maneuver the city’s backstreets on your own in search of the lovely blue houses and seek out the feeling of being lost in its entanglement, you should definitely look for two areas – Navchowkiya and Chandpol, particularly, Brahmapuri. These areas are where the majority of blue houses are clustered.

9:30 am: Toorji Ka Jhalra Bavdi (Jodhpur Stepwell)

Built by Rani Tawar Ji , Queen of Maharaja Abhaya Singh in the 1740s, Toorji Ka Jhalra Bavdi is an architectural wonder.

Your list of the best places to visit in Jodhpur in two days is incomplete without including this ancient stepwell. It remained submerged for almost 100 years and has been restored recently to discover the treasure trove of hand-carved red sandstone carvings.

You can walk down (cautiously) the maze of bumpy stairs or just admire it from the top as I did.

Note: Enjoy a cup of coffee at Jodhpur’s favorite hangout, Stepwell Cafe with a beautiful view of Toorji’s Step Well . Its terrace affords unparalleled views of Mehrangarh Fort.

If you’ve time, walk about 500 meters away from Toorji ki Jhalra to another lesser-known stepwell, Mahila Baag ka Jhalra .

12 pm: Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum

Commissioned by Maharaja Umaid Singh on Chittar Hill (the highest point in Jodhpur) in 1929, Umaid Bhawan Palace is a true embodiment of the royal heritage of Rajasthan.

With over 347 rooms the palace is spread across 26 acres. A substantial part of the palace has been converted into a heritage hotel run by the Taj Group of Hotels , a portion of it is occupied by the current royal family, and the remaining part is converted into a museum.

From paintings, furniture, weapons, and art pieces, to trophies, and antique clocks – the museum houses the private collection of the royal family. You can also see the royal vintage car collection on the lawns of the palace.

Opening Timings: The museum is open all days of the week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Entry Tickets: INR 30 (USD 0.38) per Indian adult, INR 10 (USD 0.13) per Indian child aged 5 to 11 years, and INR 100 (USD 1.26) per foreign adult

1 pm: Lunch @ Khaas Bagh

Owned by the royal family, Khaas Bagh offers an unparalleled royal dining experience. We loved our time here and definitely recommend you to dine here when in Jodhpur.

Right from the mocktails to starters to the mains to the desserts – everything we tried was lip-smackingly good. And not to mention the exquisite decore and splendid hospitality.

For all those who are crazy about cars, Khaas Bagh has a huge collection of vintage cars on display. You can marvel at the collection once you finish your meal.

3 pm: Rest and Rejuvenate

Return to your hotel room, put your feet up, and freshen up for the evening sightseeing.

4:30 pm: Coffee and Snacks @ Cafe Laalten 

Cafe Laalten is a charming art cafe at Stepwell Square and is adored for its vibrant and artistic decor, delightful ambiance, peaceful vibe, unobstructed view of the fort, amazing collection of books, friendly staff, and of course, great food.

There are very few places that speak to your soul and Cafe Laalten is one of them.

5:30 pm: Mandore Garden

Just about 9 km north of the city of Jodhpur, lies the ancient town of Mandore which served as the capital of the erstwhile princely state of Marwar before Rao Jodha Rathore shifted the capital to Jodhpur.

The beautiful and well-preserved Mandore Garden narrates the story of the glorious past.

Mandore Garden is dotted with cenotaphs aka chhatris or dewals of Maharajas of Marwar. The cenotaph of Maharaja Ajit Singh is beautiful of them all.

Other important structures inside the garden are the Hall of Heroes , Temple of 33 Crore Gods , Ravan Temple , Government Museum , and Mandore Fort and Palace .

Opening Timings: The garden is open every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. while the government museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.

Entry Tickets: Entry to the garden is free, however, a visit to the museum costs INR 20 (USD 0.25) per Indian adult, INR 10 (USD 0.13) per Indian student aged 12 or above, INR 100 (USD 1.26) per foreign adult, and INR 50 (USD 0.63) per foreign student aged 12 or above.

7 pm: Clock Tower and Sardar Market

The Clock Tower aka Ghanta Ghar stands at the heart of the old city. It’s one of the most chaotic, noisiest, lively, and colorful spots in Jodhpur. It has to be.

Here’s where tourists choose to stay (it’s where the action lies and it boasts some of the best hotels in the city), eat (it’s where most of the famous eateries, cafes, and restaurants exist), and shop (it’s where the oldest market in Jodhpur with about 7000 shops selling everything from handicrafts, fabric, footwear to handloom, spices, jewelry, and what not is positioned).

Built by Maharaja Sardar Singh about 200 years ago, the clock tower is the iconic landmark in Jodhpur. If you want to get a different perspective of the blue city, climb the tower and you’ll get a view of the market below and the bustling streets in the distance.

The clock tower market, Sardar Market , is one of the best places to shop in Jodhpur. A shopaholic in you is in for a great shopping experience here.

If you want to buy unique and inexpensive local souvenirs for family and friends back home, the Clock Tower Market is the place. Whatever you buy, be sure to haggle for the best bargain.

9 pm: Indulge in the Street Food of Jodhpur

Jodhpur is a foodie’s paradise and the clock tower area is ground zero for Jodhpur’s street food scene.

You ought to try out some of the local delicacies here. We loved samosas at Shahi Samosa, palak patta chaat at Arora Chat Bhandar, makhaniya lassi and rabri at Shri Mishrilal, and Jalebi at Motu Jalebi Wala.
