Melanie Martinez Announces ‘Portals’ Summer Tour

Melanie Martinez is bringing the third and final iteration of her signature character Cry Baby — this time, a pink-skinned, four-eyed fairy-like creature that lives between life and death — with her on tour. On Monday, the singer announced a 29-date tour across North America in support of her third album, Portals .

Martinez posted a video teasing the tour by posting a video with the environmental sound opening of her track “Nymphology” as the camera focused on a seeming portrait of herself as the pink creature as she announced the tour. The singer is set to hit the road on May 30 in Denver, before making her way to cities such as Seattle, Los Angeles, Houston, New York City, Cincinnati, and St. Louis.

Fans on her mailing list will be able to access presale tickets on Wednesday before tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday at 10 a.m. local time.

“With  Portals , Martinez delivers an effortlessly inventive, mature record that reintroduces her as an artist unafraid to start from scratch and tackle complex, difficult ideas,” a Rolling Stone review of the new album says. “She’s letting us inside her world, and the story she tells is crystal clear.”

This is Martinez’s first time on the road since 2019 and 2020’s K-12 Tour. Before then, she performed her LP Cry Baby on the road from 2015 to 2017 for a whopping total of 124 shows.

Multi-Platinum alternative-pop phenom Melanie Martinez has unveiled plans for her most ambitious concert tour to date. The Trilogy Tour will see the evolution of Martinez’s alter ego “Cry Baby” performed live. It will include hits from all three of her Top 10 groundbreaking albums: Cry Baby , K-12 , and Portals which have collectively amassed over 14 Billion streams worldwide. The tour gets underway on May 10, 2024 at Seattle WA’s Climate Pledge Arena and then visits arenas across North America through mid-June. Highlights include such historic venues as Inglewood, CA’s Kia Forum (May 15), New York City’s Madison Square Garden (June 5), and Toronto, ON’s Scotiabank Arena (June 9).

The 13-track PORTALS is highlighted by new single “VOID,” written and produced by Martinez, available now HERE . Martinez first unveiled PORTALS last month with an instantly viral TikTok video causing pandemonium among fans around the globe, with teasers surpassing 115 million views across socials. The 29-city “PORTALS Tour” will launch in Denver on May 30th, followed by stops to Seattle and Portland in the first week. Martinez will play four nights across California between San Francisco, Wheatland, Inglewood, and San Diego, then head east via Phoenix to Texas for shows in Irving, Houston, and Austin. She hosts two Florida dates in Tampa and Hollywood, then continues up the East Coast to Atlanta on June 23rd; Charlotte, North Carolina on June 24th; and Bridgeport, Connecticut on June 27th. She’ll return to her hometown of New York City for a performance at Radio City Music Hall on June 28th, then complete her East Coast trip with stops to Philadelphia; Boston; and Washington, DC.

In early July, Martinez will tour the Midwest in cities like Cleveland, Cincinnati, and St. Louis. She’ll headline Chicago’s Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom on July 11th and The Armory in Minneapolis on July 12th, followed by a night in Toronto on July 14th. Stage design and development [ ]

The PORTALS Tour stage has a giant moth portal, intended as a showcase of Melanie's universe created for the PORTALS album.

Nature elements can be seen all around the stage during the concert, with vines, giant inflatable mushrooms, a spider web, a leech seat, and the band's risers being modeled after mossy rocks. The performance heavily relies on video visuals created by Normal Studios in Montréal.

The tour itself had been in development for months, dating back to 2022. Melanie opted to work with Fuse Technical Group for all the stage lighting, who had previously worked with her on the K-12 Tour . One of the tour's lighting programmers, Paul Guthrie said in an interview about the tour: [1]

We all met at the end of last year to discuss the tour. Right from the beginning, Melanie had an incredible creative set of ideas; our guide was to listen and guide them into something we could take on the road. They wanted to completely shift into this new Portals character, so we got to develop a fantasy world for that to exist. The design evolved over several months. Certain ambitious ideas were initially discussed but much of the pre-production process involved balancing feasibility and deployability. I always knew that the video content would be a strong element to create or extend the environment and we had fun adding the other pieces to fill it out.

Getting into the creature had been a challenge for Melanie. Guthrie also says:

Most challenging for Martinez was the mask she wears onstage. I'm amazed to see how the artist could wear something so complex yet still sing, hear, dance, move, and breathe—another example of commitment to their art. The mask gives me a signature character to light onstage, as well as the ability to use color and textures that you might not usually use on an artist's face or skin.

For development of the props and stage themselves, a few companies helped.

• Sew What? created all the soft cloth props, like the moth portal, vines, and spider web.
• Centerline Scenery created the hard sculpture props, like the leech chair and band risers.
• Inflatable Design Group created the giant inflatable mushroom clusters.
• Strictly FX created the lasers and butterfly-shaped confetti.

Melanie's vision was favored for all the props. Guthrie explains:

The album cover art was revealed after we had everything in place, so we had already established the nature/fantasy elements of the set and visuals. It was great to always have somethin going on throughout the show. Melanie would send me AI renderings of environments or textures that we used to create the set or guide the scenic treatments; designing inflatable mushrooms and a giant leech stool was fun. Megan Duckett at Sew What? was a great collaborator, using her artistic superpowers to give us some amazing soft goods and scenic pieces like the moth portal, hanging vines, and spider web.

Concert synopsis [ ]

Melanie opens the show with a monologue, which transitions directly into " DEATH ". The monologue is as follows:

Hello Earthlings! It's me, Cry Baby . I know you can't see me, but I'm still here. Wanna know a secret? There's space between... Look into the light and repeat after me: "Our energy can't be destroyed. We find the light within our void. We've been here before, we can do it again. The evolution will never end. We are protected, we are immortal. And tonight, we step into the portal."

A laser portal opens into the crowd at the end of the monologue, and Melanie walks onto the stage to perform the entire set of PORTALS . Melanie, for all dates, has dressed up as The Creature , in different custom outfits, wigs, and makeup looks each night.

The concert consists of all dance performances based on the story of each individual song, excluding "LIGHT SHOWER", "LEECHES", "BATTLE OF THE LARYNX", and "POWDER".

"VOID" and "TUNNEL VISION"'s choreographies heavily differ from their music videos. "VOID" is a full dance routine including Melanie and all 4 dancers, and "TUNNEL VISION" has Melanie singing with 2 dancers in the background acting out an abusive relationship.

Stage props have been incorporated into "FAERIE SOIRÉE", "LIGHT SHOWER" and" SPIDER WEB".

• For "FAERIE SOIRÉE", giant inflatable light-up mushrooms appear on the sides of the stage. This is the only prop that remains on stage for the rest of the concert.
• For "LIGHT SHOWER", Melanie sings while sitting on a giant leech (originally intended for "LEECHES"). This prop is not used during Asia/Oceania performances as it is expensive to import things to those continents. So instead, Melanie just stood up for the performances.
• For "SPIDER WEB", the performance includes a giant spider web that is set up by the dancers.

For "NYMPHOLOGY", Melanie gives a shoutout to the dancers and band members. They, along with the dancers, throw mushrooms out into the crowd created by The Felt Pod . They can be bought here .

At the end of "WOMB", Melanie thanks the crowd and exits the stage, while pink butterfly-shaped confetti gets launched out into the crowd. She comes back on stage to perform the encore, doing either:

• The remaining 3 PORTALS songs ("POWDER", "PLUTO", "MILK OF THE SIREN")
• 3 select songs from Cry Baby or K-12 and "MILK OF THE SIREN"

For the ending to "MILK OF THE SIREN", Melanie's dancers wave flags in support of certain countries and/or groups. *Denver and Sandy did not have any flags. For these shows, the dancers performed the original choreography where they all "die" at the end.

Melanie Martinez has announced her 2023 North American “PORTALS Tour” and tickets are dropping right after her recently-released third album of the same name. The new summer outing will also host the revival of the singer-songwriter-producer’s mystical alter-ego, Cry Baby.

What Is Melanie Martinez’s Next Tour?

The 29-city “PORTALS Tour” will launch in Denver on May 30th, followed by stops to Seattle and Portland in the first week. Martinez will play four nights across California between San Francisco, Wheatland, Inglewood, and San Diego, then head east via Phoenix to Texas for shows in Irving, Houston, and Austin. She hosts two Florida dates in Tampa and Hollywood, then continues up the East Coast to Atlanta on June 23rd; Charlotte, North Carolina on June 24th; and Bridgeport, Connecticut on June 27th. She’ll return to her hometown of New York City for a performance at Radio City Music Hall on June 28th, then complete her East Coast trip with stops to Philadelphia; Boston; and Washington, DC.

In early July, Martinez will tour the Midwest in cities like Cleveland, Cincinnati, and St. Louis. She’ll headline Chicago’s Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom on July 11th and The Armory in Minneapolis on July 12th, followed by a night in Toronto on July 14th. The “PORTALS Tour” wraps in Montreal on July 15th.

Seats for Melanie Martinez’s “PORTALS” tour will be claimable first to members of the singer’s mailing list on Wednesday, April 5th. A Live Nation pre-sale follows on Thursday, April 6th at 10:00 a.m. local time (using access code VINYL ) along with a Spotify pre-sale and venue-specific early access options.

General public tickets go on-sale on Friday, April 7th at 10:00 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster .

Melanie Martinez announces 2023 North American tour

The singer returns to the live stage for the first time since 2020..

It looks like Melanie Martinez’s “Cry Baby” character is coming back to the touring stage, this time as a four-eyed, pink-skinned ethereal creature.

Martinez announced the upcoming tour on social media on Monday , sharing news with a short video set in the same mystical forest as her other ‘Portals’ related posts, with audio from the song ‘Nymphology’ from ‘Portals’.

Details on the 2023 ‘Portals’ North American tour

The ‘Portals’ tour will span 29 North American cities , beginning on May 30 in Denver, Colorado . She’ll then make her way to the West Coast of the United States, heading to the Los Angeles area on June 9 in Inglewood.

She’ll then shift over to the East Coast on June 20 in Tampa, Florida , stopping in New York on June 28 , and ending with two shows in Canada, July 14 in Toronto, and July 15 in Montreal.

Pre-sales for the show started on Wednesday , with general sale tickets beginning on Friday at 10:00 a.m. local time . Fans subscribed to Martinez’s mailing list received access to the presale tickets on Wednesday.

The upcoming tour will be Martinez’s first major tour dates since the ‘K–12 Tour’ was cut short as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tour will be in support of her new album of the same name, which was released on Friday, March 31.

The artist is fresh off performing a handful of shows in South America at the series of Lollapalooza shows in Brazil, Argentina, and Chile between March 17th and 26th.

At these performances, Martinez was seen fully dressed as the new iteration of her “Cry Baby” persona, complete with spray-painted pink skin, and eye and ear prosthetics.

Praise for ‘Portals’

“With Portals, Martinez delivers an effortlessly inventive, mature record that reintroduces her as an artist unafraid to start from scratch and tackle complex, difficult ideas ,” a Rolling Stones review of the album stated.

“She’s letting us inside her world, and the story she tells is crystal clear.”

Martinez has opened up about the themes and message she hopes to spread with ‘Portals’, from concepts of rebirth, and comfort in times of grief and loss.

“All of the songs on this album are based on past-life-regression therapy books I’ve been reading for a few years now, ” Martinez said in an Instagram post .

“All of them disguised with earthly themes for double/triple meaning, to create a frequency for humans to relate to while still here on Earth.”

In another Instagram post , she wrote: “ I hope the weight of mortality that society has placed on people becomes lighter. I hope grief becomes easier for people while listening to this record,

“That they can enjoy this life to the fullest knowing that we’re all just here to grow, create, feel, and have shared experiences with one another to help each other evolve. ”

The show was incredible (at least from what I could see). I loved everything, the dancing, the acting, the costumes, the background, the props. Everything was awesome. I could really see that everyone involved in the performance did their best and they all deserve so much credit for their work! I really appreciate that it wasn’t just a concert where you listened to the music, it was intact a very visual concert it even had a scent to it which I personally just loved! But even though everything was great I had a few problems. First off I could barely see anything at all, I’m not the tallest person and there were people who towered over me just coming and standing right in front of me, and it’s a shame. Since I barely saw anything it kinda made my experience worse, I was really looking forward to seeing the show but I couldn’t even if I tried. Second off it was really really hard to stand the entire concert so a few brakes for our and Melanie’s sake would be great, I could hear that she needed some water and a cough drop at at about the same time I needed a sit down and some water. Otherwise amazing show I totally recommend it!!! <3

The dancing, singing, choreography and the short breaks between songs were so creative!

The only problem I, and many others had, was the amount of time we had to wait for the actual show to start.

Everyone arrived around 19.30 (7:30PM) and the show didn’t start until probably around 1 hour later because of the introduction singer. Said singer wasn’t bad, but she wasn’t the person we paid to see and she was on stage for way too long for everyone’s liking; people were starting to sit on the floor because of the amount of time and boredom with waiting for the main performer.

It Was Amazing!! I Loved It Start To Finish. I Went With My Brother, My BFF, Her Cousin, My Brothers Gf And Her Sister. It Started With Naaz Opening The Show. After The Show I Listened To Some Of Her Songs And She Is Really Good! Then They Got Ready And The Show Started. Melanie Martinez Live Is Amazing. She Did All The Songs From K-12, 3 Songs From Crybaby (Sippy Cup, Alphabet Boy And Mad Hatter) And Fire Drill! She Acted Out The Movie (K-12) And The Dancers Were Incredible! During Mad Hatter For Example, One Of The Dancers Was Out And They Were Flipping And Cartwheeling Everywhere! She Even Flipped Onto The Seat And Landed Perfectly!!! I Loved When She Sang Recess. It's Such An Elegant Song And The Performance Inhanced The Elegant Feel. Show And Tell And Nurses Office Made It Feel Like You Were In The Movie (So Did Orange Juice, Strawberry Shortcake, Class Fight, Wheels On The Bus And Lunchbox Friends). Lots Of Costume Changes Too Which Was Cool. Overall, I Absolutely Loved It! 5 Stars. I Would Definitely Go Again If She Came Back. I Love Her Music. Welp, See You Again When I Review In Another 4 Years!
