What an experience we had! 7 travellers in our group have never visited Thailand and I was a little concerned that not everyone will enjoy it. How wrong was I ! With Remmert in control of the bookings of our flights and hotels and ample info supplied beforehand to ready the group, it was fun, sea and shopping all the way. 1 of the travellers unfortunately suffered a medical emergency, but with Remmert on board and the very helpful staff at Celes Samui, I’m happy to confirm that he is fully recovered and ready for the next Thailand experience. Where to start ?? Having seen a small advert from Hello Islands and wanting to do another Thailand trip to see our older son, I decided to give them a call. A young man, Remmert Malan, took my call & subsequent mails with loads of questions in-between and handled them with patience & knowledge. I heard about the travel agency through my friend Bernadine Fransman. If anyone wants to go on vacation, you need to plan, book and pay. Remmert Malan (travel agency) from Hello Island was very much in contact with us, and helped us through the process. Communication was informative. We received a Digital Travel Booklet with loads of information on how to plan our day to day outings. On arrival drinks were served, it was a very hot day. Check in staff were friendly and attentive. The hotel was very clean and well maintained. Rooms were very comfortable with all modern amenities. A holiday well spent, every day was a treat. We visited alot of places, the Buddha, temple, elephant riding, the upside-down house, zip lining, the Simon cabaray show, the nut factory, gem gallery and many more. The Phuket mall has a 5storey building very big (a treat on its own). We also had a trip with the ferry to Phi Phi Island for 3days. While on the boat we view the beautiful scenery and Maya Beach. We hire the Longtail boat to take us for swimming and snorkeling. We stop at Monkey beach and took some pictures. Thailand is very safe and clean. Should we go again next time, for sure we would definitely use Hello Island again .They really have outstanding services.

The holiday was unforgettable from booking ( a year ago) to the day we returned to Cape Town! The over all experience was exceptional, that being from the time I sent the email to enquire about the promotional trips till the time I landed back home. Thailand is a GEM. To us South Africans it is sooo affordable. Whether your are into the hustle and bustle, or just want to relax next to the beach – there is something for everyone.

My favourite was swimming in the warm sea water – something our Capetonians cannot really do here at home without freezing your bum off [LOL].

An excellent island hopping package put together by Remmert Malan, all hotels were as advertised by Remmert – 5 star in our opinion, transport arranged was promptly, breakfasts in the hotels were 5 star, a pity that during our last three days in Krabi we encountered rain but we knew that we might get rain sometime. We will definitely use Remmert Malan for future Thailand trips, we would like to see that a few days at Koh Samui instead of all 7 nights at Patong Beach.

The only bit of constructive criticism I would like to mention is no reflection on Remmert whatsoever, but on the PP Princess Resort: after the amazing comfort of the beds at The Nature Phuket, the beds at PP Princess were appallingly bad. As hard as planks and extremely uncomfortable to sleep on.

Before going into details, I wanna start by saying, if you are heading to Thailand for a holiday then Hello Island should be your best friend. My trip was postponed a few times due to covid but my friend and I never gave up and throughout, I was getting communication from the Hello team. The day of departure was approaching and everything was done without struggle, the only thing we had to do was provide travelling documents basically. From the moment we set foot in Phuket airport, there was someone waiting for us with my name and took us straight to our hotel. Everything was included in the digital travel booklet and by Everything and mean EVERYTHING, we had our itinerary in there, the best itinerary ever. We followed the itinerary that was made for us by the Hello team and I have never been to such an epic trip before. From day 1 till the last day. We had taken the 4 Island including Bankok, best decision ever made, we were even starting to speak a little bit of Thai haha, the trip started off with at the islands, where we did snorkeling, scuba (I wish) haha but we didn’t have enough time to do training on that, I was flying on that parachute thing being pulled by a boat, the video is amazing, we came across weird animals, we had a swim in the beautiful natural lagoons, we partied at the beach, we hardly ever slept to be honest and long story short, we wrapped things up by blowing all the money in Bangkok before heading back LOL, 2 men shopping like new yorkers, we couldn’t help it and Bankok was just the place to do that.

Just book a trip with Hello Island, pack up and be ready to have a time of your life. Leave everything to them like we did.

This was our first time overseas and thus we felt uncertain and didn’t know what to expect. Well, where do we start?

Since the first communication with Remmert and Team at Hello Island, all went as smooth as a hot knife in butter. We have given through our needs and what we wanted to do and they have put together a holiday package to suit our needs.

And was this now a great and awesome experience.

The electronic booklet makes it so much easier as all your vouchers for travelling, accommodation and transfers are included. Not to forget the tips given to you and what / where you can explore and enjoy good quality time. Our seats were booked online by Remmert, so it’s like packing your bags and getting onto the Aeroplane, forgetting about everything and relaxing. Nothing to worry about. On arrival, great welcome by our guide taking us to Hotels for an awesome holiday experience waiting on us. Time to relax and experience Phuket and its surroundings in your own time. We have included a couple of Islands this year, which was awesome as all arrangements by Hello Island were done professionally with no issues.

Indeed, credit must go to Remmert when we needed assistance from him this year for a Dentist after day 4 in Phuket with an Emergency for my wife. 15 Minutes and I was informed that an appointment has been arranged and all necessary info was provided by Remmert, even made an appointment as well. Thanks for all that help Remmert. For this reason, his 24-hour Emergency number as provided in the booklet assisted us a lot.

Then coming to all transfers between the Islands. Surely, this was awesome and all in place. Everything was on top with no hassles and believe me, I will never go through the hassle to do all bookings myself. When it comes to pick-ups, for transfers. Drivers on time at all Hotels and Piers. One is really treated like a King, compared to those travelling with you.

Hotels / Accommodation. Outstanding and we were surprised by the hospitality and the way we were welcomed and treated at all hotels we stayed over. Now, I need to mention that this year we stayed over in 9 different hotels/locations (Phuket, Phi Phi, Railay Island, Krabi, Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Khao Sok (Jungle Village Hotel & The Lake) and Khao Lak. Breakfast and at some even lunch and dinner included. Great variety of food which you can never complain about. Almost too much to choose from. And this was great with an awesome experience at each of them. For sure to be visited again in the future.

Overall, we had a great time in Thailand with the most friendly people although it was a bit quiet, one will understand after the Covid, but surely business will pick up and I believe will return to normal again. All excursions we have booked locally with good prices and excellent service. Never did we have a dull moment.

Then, all compliments to Remmert Malan and his Team at Hello Island for arranging such a great holiday for us where great memories and friendships were made and will last forever.

A wonderful holiday with a detailed itinerary, especially Ao Nang, Krabi. Here, details from the restaurants to massage places were helpful and spot on. The itinerary made it easy to plan our days as little of our own research was required. However, more information and updates should be done for Koh Phi Phi (many of the recommended restaurants have closed) and Railay Bay (very limited information provided). Hello Island was meticulous in their approach to our needs. I would gladly go on another Hello Island planned holiday.

The entire holiday was absolutely amazing, with an incredibly unique hotel stay at The Nature Phuket, with all arrangements on point from the Hello Island team. The travel guide also proved to be extremely useful, with us enjoying many wonderful meals and activities from the recommended list. I just came back from my 11 night Island hopper holiday. It was an amazing stress free adventure. There were a lot of logistics in terms of my itinerary from flights, transfers, hotels, ferry’s etc. Remmert and his team from Hello Islands took care of it wonderfully. Remmert has been incredibly helpful. I am still amazed by how well he planned our Trip to Phuket, Phi Phi and Krabi. Due to the somewhat low price we paid (in my opinion), I did not have the highest expectations. However, all my expectations were far exceeded. All flights, accommodation, breakfast and ferry trips were included and of really good standard. We enjoyed the Bay View Resort at Phi Phi the most due to its incredible views from the rooms, however each hotel/resort had something special about them. The digital travel booklet is ALL you will need when booking a holiday with Hello Islands. I kept it on my phone and visited it daily for recommendations on where to dine and what to see and do. Remmert, you made our dreams come true, I will never forget this trip to Thailand. I have several bruises and scars and a lost toenail as evidence of the fun I had LOL! I highly recommend Hello Islands and Thailand – the locals are incredible and all destinations we visited had an anything-goes-vibe. In my opinion, Thailand offers really good value for money, especially the massages. Thailand has more spa’s/parlours than we have taxi’s in SA. For the best massage I would recommend the beach massages on Long Beach in Phi Phi and the All day massage and sea in Ao Nang. If you’re young and up for it, you should not miss Bangla Road in Phuket for a night out you would never forget or the CentrePoint in Krabi, 3 levels of bars, nightclubs and restaurants and Cabarets by Ladyboys with the biggest boobs I have ever seen lol!

We certainly hope to be back, but secretly hoping Remmert starts to offer packages to Brazil as that is where we hope to go in 2020. Happy travels!!

It was a trip to remember. My sister and I met Remmert Malan in February 2019 at a restaurant in Oude Westhoff. After that meeting we put a deposit down and for 6 months we paid off the rest for our trip to Thailand. We left on 24/7 and came back on 18/8. When we landed untill the 4/8 we visited Phuket, Phi Phi and Krabi. The professional service we received from Hello Islands was outstanding. From the paperwork received for your transfers, drivers that were always on time to pick us up for our transfers and amazing hotels we stayed at. I give it ten stars. As a final year university student this was my first time travelling overseas but also my first time travelling without my parents. The accommodation at Seaview Patong Hotel was perfect and we would love to stay there when we visit Phuket again, in future. We will however, never ever travel with Etihad Airways again. The flight travel time was killing us, because the seats are so small and uncomfortable. Their service and food are terrible and definitely not what we are used to on other airlines (and we travel a lot). But thanks again for your professional assistance with our booking. Regards

It is with great pleasure that I write to you to share my recent Thailand experience.

At the outset, I must declare that I was incredibly apprehensive entrusting a relatively unfamiliar agency to book my island getaway. But boy was I proved wrong!

From my first enquiry to my last boarding pass, Remmert and the rest of the Hello Islands team were always on hand to tend to every concern of mine, however great or miniscule it was. I cannot begin to convey what a relief it was to have the team on hand at every stage of the vacation and preliminary stages (an unexpected service to be honest). It allowed for a relaxed and carefree holiday experience. With the bulk of the administrative matters having been lifted off my shoulders, I was able to bask in all of Thailand’s richness and beauty. I thank the team for affording me an unforgettable experience that has left an indelible mark in my memoirs.

The thorough, chronological compilation of the digital travel booklet made for a simplified reference point throughout my journey. Having had transfers booked in advance (that too with reliable and quality service providers) ensured easy commute between the different stages of the trip. It’s easy (perhaps inevitable) to get swindled as a foreigner in this context, and this simple strategy served a much needed protective mechanism.

The calibre of accommodation booked was appropriate across the islands visited. The living conditions were sufficient to provide a clean and peaceful haven of rest after busy days of touring. It must be noted that minor plumbing issues were experienced in Phi Phi, but were tended to swiftly.

The professional and timeous culture of communication exhibited by the Hello Islands team has left a lasting impression on me. I will not hesitate to engage with the agency in the future for personal and/or referral reasons.

The stay at Seaview Hotel Patong, was also great, check in was smooth, and the rooms neat and tidy. Willingness of staff to move to another room when aircon was problematic. Food and drinks was excellent, and overall the staff is very friendly and helpful, Yunita, Toy, Roberto, Jonathan who sings for us, and all the other staff members, cannot mention all the names, were very friendly and helped feeling at home there. Remmert and team were amazing. We did a very late booking for July holidays 2019 and were still able to get great rates for a family of 7. Choice of accommodation was great at all three destinations and flights, transfers and ferries were all on time and hassle free. We even made a late change to stay longer on one island which was organised promptly with no penalties. The personalised digital guide we received upfront had all info we needed with flights vouchers travel info etc etc. All we had to do is have our passports ready. I will definitely use Hello Island again.

Feedback on the 2019 Vacation.

Since booking was made with Hello Islands, all were taken over and taken care off. The digital travel booklet made it all crystal clear on what to expect. Then came our vacation, we were checked in by Remmert and Team which assisted a lot. This already helped a lot.

I can never say that I was disappointed in any way whatsoever as all arrangements was in place with any enquiries handled and sorted within 10 minutes.

My personal opinion, never will or shall I recommend any other company to take care of my travel arrangements. Hello Islands is doing one great job and I am glad to make use of their services.

Well organized!

This is the first time in our lives we have actually booked a package deal trip and have travelled to over 20 countries on our own in our lives. From the get-go ie even the initial enquiry phase, the service provided was personal, immediate, comprehensive and accurate. The holiday itself was perfectly arranged and all the transfers were on time and the hotels we stayed at were superior to what we tend to book when making our own arrangements. I only have praise for Hello Islands and have already widely recommended them to friends and family!

the trip was well organized and easy to navigate through the itinerary. the pick ups were always ahead of time and never late. the emergency contact that was provided was fast and very supportive when we accidentally left one hotel with our room card, quick arrangements were made to avoid us from paying any penalties. with the transport and accommodation so well organized and on a time schedule we were free to worry about what fun stuff to get up to over there rather than worrying about check ins and flagging down the cheapest taxis… all and all what an amazing trip.

What a wonderful holiday, Every arrangement worked smoothly and exactly as one would want when moving around a country you cannot speak the language and those around you do not speak english. We got each place on time and every connection flowed fairly smoothly. We had a glorious time of snorkelling particularly at Koh Kradan.

I would like to Thank Hello Islands for an amazing travel experience. My husband an I had a fantastic time. Everything was well organised and people were very prompt an efficient, I only have one recommendation if muslim couples/families travel it would be great if they let the hotel know in preparation for their breakfast. Lucky for us the staff at the hotels were very accommodating they prepped our breakfast (to be more specific omelets an eggs were made in separate pans) were no pork was made in but a halaal option would be fantastic

I can not recommend Hello Islands enough. As first time travelers, we encountered so many hiccups before even leaving the country, mostly with issues at the Dept Home Affairs. The Hello Islands team were patient and reassuring throughout. Our holiday in Thailand was INCREDIBLE. The digital travel booklet supplied insightful tips on how to get the most out of our trip, and again the team went above and beyond in assisting us with check-in’s, etc. I also appreciated that we were contacted every step of the way from the days leading up to our departure to our arrival in Thailand. We are already planning next year’s trip, as the island has so much to offer that we could not possibly have experienced it all in only 10 days, and will absolutely make use of Hello Islands again and again.

THIS REVIEW IS WAY OVER DUE BUT HAS TO BE POSTED. We were fortunate enough to have a trip to Thailand booked by Remmert and his team. We initially went the normal booking route through Flight Centre, Pentravel & StaTravel but they all had a issue with our budget and what we had planned to see/do or just never bothered getting back to us. My wife found Hello Islands through Facebook (BY LUCK) and decided we should have a look. We gave them a call and asked if they can come up with a package that suites our needs. He mentioned we should have a look at their packages and see if something caught our eye. Sure enough they had exactly what we wanted, Phuket, Krabi and Bangkok all in one. We amended a package slightly and went ahead and booked. Our complete trip was 14 nights in total including all flights, transfers and accommodation. They gave us a complete itinerary in the form of a digital travel book which made us feel like we knew exactly what we were in for. The whole process was stress free as Remmert was so professional and helpful throughout. We had a number we could contact/WhatsApp at any time if we needed advice or help in any way whilst abroad. Myself and 7 friends went on a 18 day trip to Thailand. We visited Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi, Koh Tao and Bangkok.

It has most definitively been the most amazing trip and experience of my life thus far!

Hello Islands (Remmert) has been so professional from booking our trip to checking in with us throughout our trip to see if we’re still enjoying ourselves. Even when we had trouble with a ferry company, accidentally cancelling our ferry, he was quick to contact us (after hours) and arranged other transport and immediately refunded the cancelled bus&ferry transfer.

The attention to detail that went into our travel booklet blew my mind and it was super helpful throughout our trip as all the questions that came into my head was answered as soon as I opened the booklet.

The hotels he booked for us were amazing and all at great prices!

Wow. What an amazing adventure. Everything was perfectly organized and all recommendations from the Hello Island Team were spot on. A fantastic, cost effective holiday and everything it was advertised as. We cannot thank Remmert and his team enough for their attention to detail in the organisation of this trip suffice to say that Remmert took the time and trouble to make our arrangements on a public holiday way back in March! All transport worked like clock work with not one hitch. Resorts were well prepared for their guests and one was always greeted by wide Thai smiles.We chose the 10 day package with 6 days Phuket, 2 days Phi Phi with the final 2 days in Krabi. Our positive critiscism would be to try and spread the days more evenly over the 3 resorts. All resorts had fantastic accommodation in great locations but of the 3, the resort in Phi Phi could do with some attention to maintenance as the grounds and approach to it appeared scruffy. This however did not detract from the beauty and our stay on this island. This was our third visit to the area and possibly the best way of doing it, through Hello Islands. The presentation of holiday literature and travel documentation is superb. Thank you Remmert and team. We highly reccomend your company to others who wand a taste of Thailand.

The remoteness of the Escape Beach Resort came as a bit of a surprise but since we were only there for a short time it was lovely. Seaview Patong remains my all time favourite for Thai travel. This being my fifth trip to Phuket, Thailand, I always return feeling thoroughly relaxed. The hotel we stayed in was very enjoyable with friendly staff. The breakfasts were more than adequate for our needs. The Seaview Patong hotel suites us just fine as the location proves to be perfect with no excessive noise at night. Our rooms were cleaned every day and the aircon worked perfectly. It also was a pleasure dealing with Hello Islands as all our bookings and airport check inns were perfectly accommodated and ran very smoothly from being picked up from the airport and checking out. Everything with respect to the trip was pre-arranged. We did not have to ask anything about the trip. Transfers to and from the hotel was on time and the agent in Phuket called about 15 minutes after we landed in Phuket to check if we were fine. A holiday without any concerns and well worth the money spend. Will recommend to anybody.

The Crib hotel in Phuket Patong is good for people that enjoys the busy night life – it was very close to the night market and the mall which was convenient – however the smell at the hotel was terrible in the passages as well as in the rooms that are looking out over the night market. The staff were friendly and the rooms were good. We had a lovely trip and will recommend your services to anyone that want to enjoy an island trip. Thank you

Ooh well Phuket, you put us in a good hotel. The rooms were very spacious and linen was fresh n white. Could not ask for anything more. The breakfast was ooh so comprehensive and delicious. Bangla road always on flick, Day trip to Phi Phi Islands was the highlight.

Well Bangkok was lovely for its shopping – and nightlife at Khaosan road. We are going back for this one to shop properly. Chatuchak Market was on steroids, nothing like it.

Very well organised holiday thanks to Hello Islands! They put together a pack that has everything you need from travel bookings, hotel bookings and info as well as information of what you can do at each place you go to, and all in order. This takes a lot of stress out of the travelling! I would recommend buying a local SIM card when you arrive at an airport, we got a dtac Happy Tourist SIM which worked perfectly, we used it a few times to find the drivers for the transfers between hotels and airports. The travel booklet from Hello Islands also provides other useful info about your destination such as what ATMs to use or what the respectful things are to do when visiting a temple. We really enjoyed our time there. Thank you Hello Islands for being so helpful and proactive!

Late, Late nights and not so early mornings. Walking up to beautiful view points overlooking almost the entire island. Walking through the streets one could shop for days, foot massages, Thai massages, head massages – these I miss the most. I bet we all wished this holiday would never end, however it did and I’d book another trip with Hello Islands in a heartbeat!!

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicentre of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honour on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity and honour. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chillies to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavour and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves and chilli, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world. 

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant and chillies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes and green beans is a tantalising mix of sweet, spicy and sour flavours.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbours   Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travellers for centuries. 

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city. 

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city gives way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era. 

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centres of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and are a great day trip from Bangkok.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long, with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonisation. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

Whether you're travelling by tuk-tuk through the crazy streets, cycling along backroads or taking a longtail through the khlongs, the journey in Bangkok is definitely half the fun. Drop into the stunning Grand Palace, see the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho and wind your way through floating markets.

2. Chiang Mai

This northern capital is overflowing with experiences. Temple-hop through some - or all - of its 300 temples, take a cooking class to learn the secrets of Thai cuisine and explore the Night Bazaar for delicious food, designer goods and a foot massage to die for.

If you ever wondered what was below Thailand's turquoise waters, this is the place to look. Learn to dive or pull on snorkelling gear to discover the fish and reefs that call this coastline home. Shark Island is close by for adrenaline seekers.

4. Hilltribe Country

Thailand's north is home to many of the country's minority groups. A hike along buffalo tracks will take you through colourful H'mong, Karen and Lisu villages. Spend a night as their guest for a unique insight into their life.

5. Ayuthaya

Modern meets ancient in Ayuthaya. The current city intertwines itself with the remnants of what was once one of Asia's great capitals. Walk the streets in search of clues to its imperial past and hire a bike to ride through the countryside, exploring the area's ruins.

6. Sukhothai

This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvellous monuments and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

The waters surrounding Krabi are dotted with hundreds of limestone karst islands. Kayakers and rock climbers will love exploring them, while others can travel to the nearby floating villages or just relax on one of the region's perfect beaches.

8. Golden Triangle

The area where the Thai, Laotian and Burmese borders meet has long been associated with colourful cultures and illicit opium trade. The opium may have gone but the colour hasn't and the markets offer all sorts of amazing local handicrafts.

9. Khao Sok National Park

For a real jungle experience, spend a couple of days in Khao Sok National Park. Thick rainforests, limestone cliffs, waterfalls and mountains make a wild playground.

10. Kanchanaburi

This tranquil town is the jumping-off point for visits to the infamous Hell Fire Pass and River Kwai. Be sure to take a ride along the tracks of the Death Railway and reflect on the atrocities of war at the Jeath War Museum.

Visit a park that provides a sanctuary for elephants – many of which have been rescued from the cruel practices of the elephant riding industry.

Spot schools of colourful tropical fish as you snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of Ao Nang.

4. Erawan National Park

Cool off in the waters of Erawan National Park or simply stand back and watch the idyllic waterfalls.

Follow the scent of chilli and lemongrass to one of Bangkok’s many delicious food markets.

Pedal around ancient temples and ruins built as early as the 13th century at the World Heritage-listed Sukhothai Historic Park.

7. Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay, is perhaps one of Thailand's most recognisable gems. Kayak around the green waters, admiring the sheer limestone karsts that jut dramatically out of the sea.

Bustling street markets filled with colourful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up. 

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humour. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colourful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.  

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colourful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music and performances.

The Internet can be accessed at hotels and internet cafes in large cities and tourist areas but is limited in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Thailand?

Mobile phone coverage is generally good in Thailand’s urban areas, but may not be available on some of the islands and in more remote areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Thailand?

Squat toilets are most common in Thailand, although western-style flushable toilets can be found in larger hotels and some tourist areas. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitiser, as they are not always provided.

Can I drink the tap water in Thailand?

Drinking tap water isn’t recommended in Thailand. Avoid drinks with ice and make sure to peel fruit before eating it. Help the environment and try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, fill a reusable water bottle with filtered water. Your leader or hotel can tell you where to find filtered water.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Thailand?

Credit cards are usually accepted by hotels, large retailers and tourist sites but are less commonly accepted by smaller vendors and family-run restaurants in rural areas. Market stalls and street vendors will not accept credit cards. Always carry enough cash for smaller purchases in case credit cards are not an option.

What is ATM access like in Thailand?

ATMs are widely available in larger cities but are less common in small villages or rural areas. Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Thailand?

No vaccines are required in order to enter Thailand but some are recommended for protection against disease. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

Is Thailand a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers. Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or to see the sights of a new city.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO TRAVEL?

Beach, hike or party…don’t let the rain ruin your stay.  November to February is Thailand’s cool season with the most sunshine and least rain making it the ideal time to plan your holiday.  December can get overcrowded and pricey, so we recommend November, January and February to get the best out of the weather and your budget.

The hot season (March to May) and wet season (June to October) can get very humid and unpleasant if you are not used to tropical climate, however sites are less crowded and generally there are fantastic low season deals available over this time.  If you are visiting remote areas access may be limited due to heavy rains and hiking may not be suitable in forest areas over mid-year periods.

Thailand is blessed with some of the world’s most-enviable beaches and a myriad of off shore islands for a holiday filled with watersports, hammocks and sunset strolls along the water’s edge. Some areas are super-vibey while others offer a more serene experience.

You could decide to spend your holiday at just one of these destinations, or combine a few in a tailormade Thailand holiday. Phuket is the largest island in Thailand and is undeniably the country’s most popular beach destination with a vibrant nightlife, bustling market stalls, a family atmosphere or romantic seclusion. Phi Phi Island is located two hours by ferry from Phuket (some resorts also offer a speedboat service) and offers a quieter area where sandy beaches lead to aquamarine bays filled with marine life. Krabi is known for sheer limestone cliffs where over 130 islands rise majestically from the sea, and secluded beaches are accessible only by colourfully adorned long-tail boats. And finally, Khao Lak is on Thailand’s mainland west coast, and is a less crowded tourist destination with a rugged natural beauty.

Thailand is an island paradise that offers a vast selection of hotels, and the beaches supply every kind of vibe! There’s always a party or something to do if you feel like being active while you’ll also find quieter beaches and rainforest retreats if you’re travelling as a family or couple. While Thailand was once known as a cheap, budget holiday destination, it is now becoming better known for its range of luxury hotels, of which the Holiday Factory only works with the best of the best.

Thailand’s tropical climate has three main seasons: hot from March to June, rainy from July to October, and cool from November to February. Average temperatures range from 20°C to 35°C. The monsoon season in the Andaman Sea is from approximately May to October but even during this time the monsoon rains are generally short and heavy, clearing quickly and days of constant rain are rare.

The currency is the Thai Baht which is better for bargaining and shopping in markets. US Dollars, Pounds and Euros are accepted at hotels. A service charge is already included in all prices. Tips, in general, are not mandatory, and you should only give them if you are really content with the service offered. Waiters, bellboys, porters, restroom attendants and taxi drivers will happily accept loose change. Thailand is 5 hours ahead of South Africa. The electric current is 220 volts AC and the majority of electrical outlets take a round, two-pronged slim plug (the same as us!) It is important to show respect for the Thai Royal Family. Do not climb over or sit on Buddha monuments. Do not touch or give anything directly to a Buddhist monk if you are a woman. It is also rude to touch people on their head or point your feet at people or an object. Drink only bottled water and avoid ice unless you know it is made from bottled or boiled water. Be cautious when eating from food vendors on the street.

Light, cool clothes are sensible. Shorts, sleeveless shirts, tank tops and other beach-style attire are considered inappropriate dress when not actually at the beach or in a resort area. Revealing attire is not allowed in religious shrines. The dress-code for dinner is usually smart casual and gents are required to wear long trousers.

Top 5 airlines flying to Thailand

A 16 hour flight from Singapore to Los Angeles had only 2 meals. Please make it 3 meals.

Overall good experience, convenient Changi Airport, even the layover was long.

Good airlines, travelled 🧳 n Singapore multiple times and experience is consistent

Singapore Airlines from Mumbai was late, we were rerouted to Copenhagen and then to Los Angeles. As senior citizens, we should have been given a hotel voucher for a night and fly out the next day. I hope Singapore Airlines should give us a credit in good faith if they want us to fly with them. I doubt it, but you never know.

The flight was very late, sitting on the plane for over an hour and missed our connecting flight from Singapore to LA. As senior citizens, we were rerouted to Copenhagen and then to LA. They should not do this to senior citizens. They should have given us a hotel voucher for a night, then catch a flight to LA the next day. Singapore Airlines should grant us some kind of credit for the next trip, if they want us to fly with them. I doubt if we will ever hear from them.

I loved the comfort of the flight and the hospitality of the flight attendants!

Too many luggages for 1 passenger (4 bags) will make all the overhead luggage bins a challenge to fit them all. Some have oversized hand carry as in like back packer size bags shouldn’t be allowed as handcarry.

My experience with Scoot is very good. Will have no issue flying with Scoot again.

Excellent meal served with real utensils, cardboard served hot meals instead of plastic utensils and plastic covers. Quick service, friendly and accommodating stewards.

All in all the flight was good. Love the fact that for airline food it was piping hot

No Vegetarian options onboard, made to wait for a long time for boarding

POOR CREW BEHAVIOR. RESTRICTIONS ON FOOD. FEELS LIKE ECONOMY CLASS.

The food was pretty good and the crew were excellent. It would have been excellent all round but for screaming children. Six hours at least of a 10 hr flight. Mostly 1 child clearly on the spectrum and probably ADHD but I really felt for the parents and grandparents who were obviously struggling and doing the best they could under the circumstances. No reflection on the airline of course and we all need to be more tolerant with these challenges . Slept for 15 hrs when I got home.

Food was good, great communication by Pilot and Co Pilot, Crew very friendly. Slow beginning drink and meal service - over 2hrs into flight which disrupted overnight flight sleep. Entertainment systems was 3 Stars, my wife's was nonfunctional and had to call attendant 3 times to get it reset, mine the headphones and jack we're twitchy and keep going to muted volume.

The internet connection did was not functioning as per normal.

Flight got canceled without any prior information and it caused lot of trouble

Check in desk people constrained by fear. Obvious typo on Uganda visa, even though approved, caused loss of flight. Something is definitely wrong with this system.

Between Air India and Qatar my luggage was lost for three days. I eventually found my own luggage location using the Apple Air Tag. Air India used a paper form to report my lost luggage. I could never get past getting past luggage personnel with my report number before they would hang up on me. Only after them specifically telling Air India at Chandigarh airport where my luggage was located which was right under their noses did they react. After three days I finally received my luggage. The Air India luggage folks didn’t seem proactive in finding the luggage’s rightful owner.

As gold member there is no priority checkin. Meaning you either have to board with your zone or last with business class pax. As economy pax all the baggage bays are filled by the time you arrive

Staff was very friendly. There is no on board entertainment, but it’s such a short flight that it doesn’t matter. We also got a meal which was nice and unexpected due to the length of the flight.

Flight was fine overall. What you would expect from economy seats. I did appreciate the amenities (eyemask, earplugs, small toothbrush and toothpaste, thin socks).

Overall it was a very good experience. Boarding was efficient and well organized. The cabin crew were excellent. The meals were tasty and quite filling. The warm bread rolls were a nice touch. Seats were comfortable even if they were a little narrow. Entertainment selection was excellent.

I liked the overall service and comfort. The only annoying thing was paying for excess baggage at the airport. They have limited options and they don't take all cards.

Crews are very rude and unhelpful. Cramped seats in economy. Foods are useless

Other than low space, which is the problem with all airlines for economy class, the flight was excellent.

My experience was with Ethiopian airlines was pathetic. I would not recommend anyone to travel with Ethiopian air. Customer Service was very poor, rude stuff and flight attendants. Unwilling to offer help when asked either not able to articulate English properly or adamantly rude. Bole airport is dirty and unpleasant. Many passengers going through the airport but inadequate staff to offer service. Passengers in the flight very unkempt. Noisy flight. flight attendants unable to make order during flight. Passengers with kids unable to control their kids. The kids kept screaming, and shouting during the flight making everyone uncomfortable. Overall the flight was not comfortable.

The experience was amazing! Many thanks to the pilot who informed us that we were passing mt Kilimanjaro and we had the chance to see it !

I like the leg room. I did not like the plane from Chicago to Addis. It was dirty and smelly and toilet area filthy. My screen was not working and kept saying loading. The plane from Addis to Harare was clean , more modern and food looked much fresher and tasted better. Boarding at Addis was a nightmare, long queues and lots of confusion,International space has no seating are and one is standing all the time.

I took 4 Ethiopian Airlines flights on my trip. Each flight was one of the worst experiences I have had flying. The interior was filthy on each flight, the seats, the floors, the bathrooms. All were filthy. At 5-10, my knees touched the seat in front of me. The person in front of me declined their seat, basically making eye contact with me should they look up. My seat did not recline, so I was trapped in my seat, unable to use the bathroom or get up from my seat unless I woke up the person laying in my lap. My tv and seat were broken, as well as my friends seat and tv for our 14 hr flight. The bathroom closest to us was already clogged before we took off, so the backed up bathroom smells wafted out and into our row the entire 14 hr flight. Out of 4 flights, they were out of vegetarian food options for each meal. Flight staff was fairly rude and unapologetic, finally agreeing to give me a second roll and butter instead of no substitute offered for most of the meals. Flight crew had zero control over the passengers, allowing adults to congregate by exit doors and talk loudly during sleeping hours. Children were allowed to be completely ignored as they played outside of their seats and screeched for the ENTIRE 16 hr return flight. Forcing passengers to try and shush the children. Passengers then got up and got their bags the second the flight touched down, ignoring all safety and exit protocols. I will NEVER fly another Ethiopian Airlines flight as long as I live.

I still cannot find my luggage. I need my luggage.

Business and economy lines were common for most of the journey including check in and security control in Addis Abbeba. Food choice was fine, however there was a hair in my rice

The cabin crew members were so exceptionally good. They were always respectful to us the passengers and were professional. I also enjoyed the meals.

Boarding was mayhem. Entertainment system wasn't operational. Food was poor. It was like flying in the 1990's. For the price of the ticket, this was not value for money. It felt much more like an extreme discount airline.

My entertainment screen wasn't working and they couldn't fix it.

I was a good, but long trip. The airline did a good job. I would use them again.

Only 1 time food and drinks together was offered, for total 5 hours duration drinks and snacks was never offered. For some people food choice was not available, only veg was available. No entertainment option was there. Crew members were mostly back of the flight asking each other for KitKat and chips to share between them.

The business class experience is fantastic. The crew were polite but often unavailable even when I tried to call them! I even found myself bringing my used dishes and cutlery up to the crew because no one had come to collect it after over an hour.

Online was good boarding also but a child was crying all the way with no intervention from crew member.

1st of all on February 27th Abu Dhabi to Delhi flight the seat wasn't comfortable at all, coming back the Lounge at Abu Dhabi didn't have anything. Than the Food in the flight

Good range of movies but lacking decent tv shows. Wifi was really expensive on this flight, considering flights under 7 hours have a $9.99 USD charge for streaming, to jump up to $24.99 for a 7 hour 40 flight seemed a little bit of a rip off. Staff are inattentive, and really need to improve on the customer experience. The new airport is fantastic, as is the new lounge, a huge upgrade from the old airport and lounge!

Ultimate South Thailand Itinerary for 3-4 Weeks

If you’re planning a South Thailand itinerary but don’t know where to start, I’ve got you covered!

I’ve been to Thailand 6 times and explored the country extensively from north to south but South Thailand remains my all-time favorite.

Boasting some of the most stunning beaches in the world where gentle waves lap against fine white sand and towering karst cliffs, a diverse underwater world offering excelling diving opportunities, and numerous hiking trails to explore, a visit to South Thailand is a must!

In this guide, I’ll show you exactly how to plan the perfect South Thailand itinerary for 3 to 4 weeks and I’ll also give some alternatives for both 1 and 2-week trips.

I’ll also explain how to travel between each destination and offer recommendations on where to stay and the best things to do.

South Thailand Itinerary Route

Koh samui: 2-4 days.

I recommend starting your South Thailand itinerary in Koh Samui as it’s easy to get to from Bangkok.

Just note that flights to Koh Samui are quite expensive so if you’re on a budget, you can instead fly or take the night train to Surat Thani followed by a ferry or speedboat. I recommend checking on 12go.asia to get an idea of prices.

Tip : If you’re coming from other parts of Asia such as Singapore, Laos, Cambodia, or Hong Kong, you can fly directly to Koh Samui.

Koh Samui is the most popular island to visit in the Gulf of Thailand with lots of things to do, from beach hopping to visiting temples, waterfalls, and viewpoints.

While Koh Samui is indeed beautiful, it wasn’t my favorite as I found it to be quite touristy and much more expensive compared to other parts of Thailand.

It’s still worth spending a couple of days there, especially if you want to see the Ang Thong National Park, which is the reason why I decided to visit Koh Samui in the first place.

How to get from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan?

There are two ways of getting from Samui to Koh Phangan – by ferry or speedboat. The trip takes around 30-45 minutes. You can check prices and book your ticket on 12go.asia .

I personally traveled with Seatran ferry and preferred it over the speedboat as it was less bumpy.

The ride was very smooth, plus the ferry was very spacious and even had a small convenience store where you could buy snacks and coffee, a toilet, and an upper deck with more seats.

Koh Phangan: 2-3 days

The next destination on this South Thailand itinerary is Koh Phangan.

Located north of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan is famous for its full moon parties where backpackers from all over the world meet once a month.

But if partying the night away with your body covered with glow-in-the-dark paint and Thai buckets in hand isn’t your idea of fun, you can still visit Koh Phangan for its beaches.

Koh Phangan is actually very quiet and laidback (when there isn’t a party going on) with several beautiful beaches and even waterfalls and viewpoints to explore.

I visited one week before the full moon party and enjoyed my time by cycling around the island, visiting beaches, and eating yummy food at the night markets.

If you’re visiting for the full moon party, I recommend staying at least three days in Koh Phangan otherwise, two full days should be enough to see the main sights.

How to get from Koh Phangan to Koh Tao?

To get from Koh Phangan to Koh Tao, you have the choice between the Lomprayah speedboat and Songserm ferry. The speedboat takes around 1 hour while the ferry takes around 1h45.

Both will drop you off at Mae Haad Pier and from there, you can take a taxi to your hotel in Koh Tao.

Koh Tao: 2-3 days

If you’re looking for world-class diving or snorkeling opportunities, look no further than Koh Tao!

Koh Tao features some of the most pristine coral reefs and you can even spot blacktip reef sharks and giant turtles in its crystal-clear waters.

Apart from diving, there are plenty of things to do here, from beach hopping to snorkeling or hiking to one of the many viewpoints.

How to travel from Koh Tao to Khao Sok?

From Koh Tao, take a high-speed ferry to Surat Thani followed by a van to Khao Sok. The total trip duration is around 5 hours. You can check the price and book your ticket on 12go.asia .

Khao Sok National Park: 2 days

Khao Sok National Park was one of my favorite places I visited during my South Thailand itinerary.

It’s home to the stunning Cheow Lan Lake which boasts emerald waters, towering karst cliffs, and a dense rainforest teeming with wildlife, including elephants, water buffalos, hornbills, and more.

Since this is a national park, there’s an entrance fee of 300 baht for adults and 150 baht for children to visit.

I spent one night at Coco Hostel in Khao Sok Village, which btw, has several hiking trails to explore, and then headed for an overnight tour of Cheow Lan Lake.

I booked the tour with Smiley Bungalows  and paid 2,500 baht. This included hotel transfers, a private floating bungalow, food, drinks, activities such as boat safari, guided hike to a waterfall, kayaking, and all transportation including van and longtail boat.

Things to do in Khao Sok

• Go on a safari boat ride to spot elephants, water buffalos, etc
• Swim in the lake
• Hike to the “sticky” waterfall
• Hike to Kri Sorn Viewpoint

How to get from Khao Sok to Krabi Town?

From Khao Sok, take a shared mini-van to Krabi Town. The trip should take around 3 hours.

Krabi Town: 1 day

Capital of the Krabi Province, Krabi Town is popular among backpackers thanks to its wide range of cheap accommodations.

While most people only go to Krabi Town to visit the Krabi Night Market, I highly recommend spending a bit more time there.

A full day should be enough to check out some temples, viewpoints, and caves.

During my recent South Thailand itinerary, I opted to spend one night in Krabi Town but if you prefer, you can instead stay in Ao Nang and take a day trip from there.

How to get from Krabi Town to Ao Nang?

Getting from Krabi Town to Ao Nang is easy and cheap, with buses running every 10 minutes and costing around 50 baht per person. The total journey takes around 30 minutes.

Ao Nang, Krabi: 3-4 days

The very first time I visited Thailand, I chose to stay in Ao Nang and since then I’ve gone back four times already. That’s how much I love this place!

Although Ao Nang can feel a bit touristy for some, it doesn’t get the crowds of Phuket so it’s still possible to have a relaxing trip.

What I love the most about Ao Nang is its strategic location close to some of the most breathtaking beaches like Railay and Pai Plong and islands like Koh Hong, Koh Poda, and even Koh Phi Phi.

Inland you’ll find emerald swimming holes surrounded by a lush forest and stunning viewpoints like the Dragon Crest Mountain and Tiger Cave Temple.

The Krabi International Airport is also only a 30-minute drive from Ao Nang so it’s easy to get to.

3 to 4 days in Krabi should be enough for a first visit but if you have more time, I recommend staying up to a week or more.

How to get from Ao Nang to Railay Beach?

Railay Beach: 1-2 days

Surrounded by huge limestone cliffs, soft white sand, and crystal-clear turquoise waters, Railay Beach is by far the most beautiful place to visit on this South Thailand itinerary.

If you’re looking for a quieter alternative to Ao Nang, I highly recommend spending a few days there.

Given the fact Railay Beach is only accessible by boat and that the only way of getting around is by foot, you’ll definitely feel like you’re on a small remote island.

How to get from Railay to Koh Yao Noi?

To get to Koh Yao Noi, you need to take a speedboat from East Railay Pier. The trip should take around 1 hour. You can check the price and book your ticket on 12go.asia .

You’ll be dropped off at Manoh Pier in Koh Yao Noi and from there, you can take a songthaew to your hotel for around 100 baht.

Koh Yao Noi: 2 days

Situated in the Phang Nga province, Koh Yao Noi is one of the few islands that’s still fairly unknown among tourists.

Located a short boat ride from Ao Nang, Koh Yao Noi is the perfect island for those wishing to escape away from it all.

The list of things to do in Koh Yao Noi isn’t huge, so it’s the perfect opportunity to slow down and relax for a couple of days.

But if you prefer something more active, you can rent a motorbike to visit the beaches and viewpoints or check out Koh Yao Noi’s bigger sister island, Koh Yao Yai, which is even less touristy.

Phi Phi Islands: 2 days

No South Thailand itinerary would be complete without a visit to the Phi Phi Islands, home to the famous Maya Bay.

But there’s more to Koh Phi Phi than just Maya Bay. The island features some of the most stunning beaches, two of my favorites being Ton Sai and Long Beach.

You can also hike to the Phi Phi Viewpoints, kayak around the island in search of secret beaches, or go to one of the many beach parties that happen every single night.

Similar to Koh Samui, I found the Phi Phi Islands to be very touristy and expensive.

While I was able to find some secluded beaches, it’s not somewhere I’d recommend staying for more than two days (well unless you love to party!).

How to get from Koh Phi Phi to Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is actually very close to Koh Phi Phi, so you can travel between the two by speedboat in less than 1 hour. You can check the price and book your ticket on 12go.asia .

Koh Lanta: 2-4 days

Leave the crazy parties of Koh Phi Phi behind and make your way to the peaceful Koh Lanta that somehow has still managed to stay under the radar.

Koh Lanta hasn’t been hit by mass tourism (yet) so it’s less developed compared to other Thai islands.

The best thing to do here is to rent a motorbike and simply drive around the island stopping by the many empty beaches.

A must-visit is the Koh Lanta National Park where you’ll find an old lighthouse sitting on top of a cliff and a short jungle trail that can be explored in under one hour.

You can also check out the nearby islands such as Koh Talabeng and Koh Rok or practice yoga on the beach.

I spent 4 days in Koh Lanta which was the perfect amount of time to relax and explore all the main attractions.

Hot to get from Koh Lanta to Koh Lipe?

There are two ways of getting from Koh Lanta to Koh Lipe. The fastest one is to take a speedboat, which takes around 4 hours.

I did this trip the opposite way and it was the most miserable 4 hours of my entire life! The ride was super bumpy and almost everyone on the boat got sick. And to make things worse, the boat engine even stopped working a few times in the middle of the ocean!

Luckily, we made it safely to our destination but if I had to do it again, I would’ve chosen the second option, which is to take a mini-van to Pak Bara Pier followed by a 1.5-hour speedboat to Koh Lipe.

The total trip should take around 7 hours but at least you won’t have to deal with a bumpy speedboat ride for 4 hours straight!

Koh Lipe: 2-3 days

Located in the southernmost part of Thailand, Koh Lipe is a tiny island featuring some of the most stunning beaches with soft white sand and crystal-clear water.

The main thing to do here is to enjoy the beaches but you can also go scuba diving or snorkeling as the lagoon surrounding Koh Lipe is known to be one of the most beautiful in Thailand.

If you want to explore beyond Koh Lipe, you can take a day trip to Koh Adang to enjoy its empty beaches or hike to Chado Cliff Viewpoint.

What’s next?

Unfortunately, it’s now time to say goodbye to Thailand. From Koh Lipe, take a ferry and minivan to Krabi Airport and fly back to Bangkok or to your next destination in Asia.

How to modify this South Thailand itinerary?

The above itinerary starts in Koh Samui and ends in Koh Lipe but you can also do it the other way around. So if you’re already in Malaysia, you can take a ferry from Langkawi to Koh Lipe and start your trip there.

However, if you have only one week, I recommend choosing either the Krabi Province (Ao Nang: 4 days, Railay: 1 day, and Koh Phi Phi: 2 days) or the Gulf of Thailand (Koh Samui: 3 days, Koh Phangan: 2 days and Koh Tao: 2 days).

For those spending two weeks in South Thailand, you can simply combine the above two, that is, 7 days in Krabi and 7 days in the Gulf of Thailand.

Best Time to visit South Thailand

The best time to visit Thailand is generally between November and April when the weather is mostly dry.

However, there are some slight differences between the weather in Krabi and the Gulf of Thailand.

For instance, the rainy season in Krabi usually lasts until October as opposed to the Gulf of Thailand where the rain can persist up to January.

If you want to visit both Krabi and the Gulf of Thailand in a single trip, I recommend planning your trip in February or March when the weather is dry and not too hot.

I visited South Thailand in October, November, and February and had great weather with some rain on the odd days.

FACT SHEET: United States Response to the Clade I Mpox Outbreak in Several African Countries

On August 14, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern about the upsurge of mpox cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and a growing number of countries in Africa. This announcement followed the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention's (Africa CDC) declaration of a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security on August 13. The significant increase of clade I mpox cases, in both endemic countries (those that have previously had mpox outbreaks) and non-endemic countries (those that have historically not reported mpox outbreaks), threatens the health security of the region, as well as countries outside Africa. In addition, clade I mpox has a newer sub-clade referred to as clade Ib. Both clade Ia and clade Ib are circulating in DRC and have been detected in neighboring countries and in Sweden and Thailand (one case each associated with travel to Africa with known clade I cases).

In 2022, the world experienced a global outbreak of clade IIb mpox, which led to more than 95,000 cases across 115 non-endemic countries and continues to occur in the United States. The Biden-Harris Administration responded by ensuring the JYNNEOS mpox vaccine was available to at-risk populations in the U.S.

In February, as the clade I mpox outbreak grew in DRC, the Biden-Harris Administration established an incident response structure across federal departments and agencies to ensure a coordinated response and to take a proactive approach to U.S. domestic preparedness for potential clade I mpox cases. Clade I mpox causes a higher number of severe infections and has a higher mortality rate than clade IIb mpox. Because evidence for clade I mpox clinical outcomes is based primarily on data from endemic countries without widespread supportive care, particularly DRC, we do not yet know how clade I mpox would impact Americans; we do expect it would cause lower morbidity and mortality in the United States.

United States preparedness for clade I mpox

The Biden-Harris Administration has been closely monitoring the spread of mpox, specifically clade I mpox, and has been working since December 2023 to prepare domestically. The risk to most Americans from clade I mpox circulating in Central and Eastern Africa and the travel associated cases outside of Africa is very low, and there are no known cases in the United States at this time. The United States is well prepared to rapidly detect, contain, and manage clade I cases should they occur domestically.

The United States continues to increase our capacity to detect cases of clade I and clade IIb mpox through existing surveillance systems, including wastewater testing, and through expanding the robust diagnostic testing capacity built during the ongoing clade IIb outbreak to ensure coverage for clade I. The ability to expedite such diagnostic testing—in particular for those with recent travel to DRC or neighboring countries—also supports rapid detection. In addition to reaffirming the importance of mpox vaccination for those who are eligible , we are working to prevent the spread of both clades of mpox by providing and disseminating recommendations for clinicians, health departments, diagnostic laboratories, and the public.

From August 2022 to August 2024, the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR), part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), distributed more than one million vials of the JYNNEOS vaccine across the United States to mitigate the spread and severity of the clade II mpox outbreak. In addition to the preventive vaccine, partners across the U.S. government are working to better understand the effectiveness of existing treatments for mpox and have treatment options available in the event that clade I mpox is reported in the United States. The United States will continue to provide information to the public on transmission, prevention, and treatment of mpox. Those who have already had clade IIb mpox or who are fully vaccinated against it are expected to be protected against clade I mpox.

CDC has issued an updated Health Alert Network advisory for clinicians and public health departments and partners, as well as an updated Travel Health Notice , recommending travelers to DRC and neighboring countries to practice enhanced precautions. Through the State Department, our embassies are working to keep U.S. citizens abroad informed of these updates. At this time, CDC and WHO do not discourage travel to DRC or elsewhere due to the mpox outbreaks.

United States support to the global mpox outbreak

The U.S. government has been closely monitoring the spread of clade I mpox in DRC and the risk to neighboring countries since 2023, and we have been working closely with the affected country governments and regional and global health partners to reduce the impact of this outbreak and safeguard public health. The U.S. government support for the mpox response builds on our longstanding partnerships in global health security and development with DRC and throughout Africa, which have helped to combat infectious diseases, such as HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria for more than 20 years. In fiscal year 2023, the United States allocated more than $2.65 billion in bilateral health funding to countries in Central and Eastern Africa and is the largest global health donor.

Since March 2024, USAID and CDC together have provided an additional $20 million USD to support clade I mpox response efforts in Central and Eastern Africa, and on August 20, USAID announced up to an additional $35 million in emergency health assistance to bolster response efforts, pending Congressional Notification, bringing the proposed total U.S. government financial support for DRC and other affected countries in the region to more than $55 million.

In addition to direct financial support, the United States government is surging staff to support the mpox response. More than 200 staff including epidemiologists, laboratorians, and risk communication experts have been deployed to support response efforts in the United States and Africa. United States government support has focused on a range of critical public health interventions aimed at limiting transmission and reducing mpox morbidity and mortality. These interventions include surveillance with deployment of additional local field epidemiologists, risk communication and community engagement, laboratory supplies and diagnostics, infection prevention and control, clinical services, and vaccine planning.

In addition to scaling up surveillance, testing, and treatment of cases, vaccination will be a critical element of the response to this outbreak. Successful vaccination campaigns will require health workers to provide vaccinations, financial support to roll out vaccine and vaccination supplies, and regulatory approval for use of vaccines in affected countries. To support this effort, USAID is donating 50,000 doses of the FDA-approved JYNNEOS vaccine to DRC, as well as financial support for rollout of the vaccine doses. The United States is working with other countries that have vaccine stockpiles, WHO, and international partners to encourage additional donations that support vaccine efforts and address challenges with vaccine delivery. This includes evaluating vaccine demand, supporting country engagement on regulatory pathways, planning vaccine implementation, and providing technical assistance to deliver the vaccines.

The United States is working with bilateral, multilateral, and private sector partners to develop and implement a coordinated response – including encouraging collaboration between WHO and Africa CDC on their response plans. The United States, through the State Department, will continue working through the U.S.-Africa CDC Joint Action Plan adopted in November 2023 to increase African Union Member States' capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to health emergencies.
