Best Travel Alarm Clocks in the UK

Best Pick

The backlighting is soft enough for eyes unadjusted to light but effective enough to allow the user to make sense of the time. Though the clock itself is compact (and lightweight), the screen-to-body ratio here is excellent, so the values are easily identifiable even from a solid distance.

The fingerprints are clearly visible on the screen.

Braun BNC008BK is a travel alarm clock with a design that mirrors functionality. The settings are simple and straightforward. The model's technical excellence and the overall quality combine, forming a sleek aesthetic and a practical product.

Seiko (224965955) LCD Travel Alarm Clock

Though not the smallest option on the list, the model is readily portable and its semi-foldable design will allow you to easily find enough space for it in your suitcase. The alarm clock includes calendar and thermometer functions. It comes with a travel case.

Some may find the alarm signal a touch too loud.

Seiko 224965955 delivers across the entire board. Its plastic body is a lot sturdier than it looks. This travel alarm clock will not cause any inconveniences on the road. You'll be able to bring it with you anywhere you go for years to come.

The device comes equipped with a built-in solar panel. It incorporates a radio-controlled automatic time and date update function. The humidity sensor will keep you updated on the microclimate situation in the room.

The buttons are relatively small and hard to locate at night.

HITO c8374 is easily the most advanced travel alarm clock on this list. Thanks to its rich functionality, you'll seldom have to defer to your smartphone and use up international roaming data. The model will prove equally convenient and helpful at home and on the road.

Plumeet EMIT-8013-BL Travel Alarm Clock with Snooze and Nightlight

The seemingly traditional quartz mechanism is devoid of the ticking sound that plagued older clocks. The Ascending Alarm function starts at a soft beep, then gradually increases the volume until you switch it off. The nightlight function is great for kids and people who aren't able to sleep in complete darkness.

The alarm set and time set dials aren't very practical.

By taking a page from the old design book and combining it with modern-day ideas and practices, the people behind Plumeet EMIT-8013-BL have been able to create an excellent travel alarm clock, both from the aesthetics and usefulness standpoints.

iiwey HO011 Dual Alarm Clocks with Temperature Display

The alarm clock gives you the ability to set two separate alarms. You can use the first alarm to help you wake up in the morning and the second as a reminder. The built-in gravity sensor lets you flip the alarm clock to stop the ringing. You put the clock back on and the ringing continues.

The instruction manual is subpar.

This is a good travel alarm clock for people who find it difficult waking up in the morning, doesn't matter the environment and the setting. That being said, the device is just as suitable for organised individuals who like to stick to a schedule and make the most of every day.

Review of Braun (BNC008BK) Digital Travel Alarm Clock

Braun (BNC008BK)

Design that mirrors functionality.

Braun BNC008BK is just an alarm clock. It doesn't have a bunch of sophisticated settings nor does it come equipped with a variety of different functions. Nevertheless, one could easily make an argument that this is the best travel alarm clock here. To make that kind of argument, you have to understand the things that make a good alarm clock. It really isn't functionality in a quantity sense, it is functionality that's about quality first and foremost. It is longevity, timelessness, and simplicity.

These are the core principles and the design philosophy behind this model. All it has is a snooze function for people who just can't wake up on the first try. It shows time and gives you the ability to set an alarm. That's about it. The matte housing looks sleek and elegant but not too much, this is still just an alarm clock, after all. The backlighting only activates when you press the button on top of the case. It is soft enough for eyes unadjusted to light but effective enough to allow the user to make sense of the time.

Though the clock itself is really small, featuring just 58 x 58 x 20.3 millimetres in overall dimensions, the screen-to-body ratio here is excellent, so the values are easily identifiable even from a solid distance.

In other words, Braun BNC008BK is a travel alarm clock with a design that mirrors functionality. The settings are simple and straightforward. The model's technical excellence and the overall quality combine, forming a sleek aesthetic and a particularly practical product.

Seiko (224965955)

Keeps you organised.

Though it might seem like Seiko 224965955 (what a lovely name) puts functionality ahead of every other aspect, that's not exactly the case. Sure, as far as the technical part of the equation is concerned, this is an excellent alarm clock, no doubt about it. But that's not the only thing it has going for it. For one, it comes supplied with a travel case, so you'll be able to keep it safe and sound on the road.

Though a little bloated, some would call the digital display stylish and even practical. And while it is not the smallest option on the list, the model is readily portable and its semi-folding design will allow you to easily find enough space for it in your suitcase.

Now, going back to that functionality we alluded to earlier, the best parts are a calendar and thermometer. Thanks to these functions, you won't have to rely on your smartphone to keep yourself organised on the road and will be able to tell the temperature outside without an Internet connection. There's the usual snooze function for people who like to sleep in. And, finally, the beep alarm that's loud enough to wake up the heaviest sleepers.

To sum it all up, Seiko 224965955 delivers across the board. Its plastic body is a lot sturdier than it looks. This travel alarm clock will not cause any inconveniences on the road. You'll be able to bring it with you anywhere you go for years to come.

Review of Seiko (224965955) LCD Travel Alarm Clock

No Need to Defer to Your Smartphone

Though advertised as a travel alarm clock, HITO c8374 will prove just as excellent and useful at home and on the road. One of the most interesting things about it is the power source options. That's right, option s, plural .

Most travel models run solely on batteries and you won't be able to use anything other than one or two AA/AAA batteries even if you wanted to. This alarm clock runs on an AAA battery. But, with its built-in solar panel, HITO c8374 also gives you an alternative to the usual alkaline battery. It is a particularly great option to have on the road since you won't always be able to replenish your battery supplies there but you will need an alarm clock to wake up in the morning anyway.

Though it isn't like an alarm in the morning is this device's only function. Far from it, really. On top of the alarm function, the model incorporates a radio-controlled automatic time and date update, so you won't have to advance the clock yourself before and after Daylight Saving Time (summer time). In addition to that, this alarm clock includes thermometer and humidity sensors. Lastly, under the time digits, the clock's display shows the date and day of the week.

To put it differently, HITO c8374 is easily the most advanced travel alarm clock on this list. Thanks to its rich functionality, you'll seldom have to defer to your smartphone and use up international roaming data. Again, the model will prove just as convenient and helpful at home and on the road.

Review of HITO c8374 Travel Alarm Clock w/ Temperature Humidity. Battery Operated w/ Solar Panel

Plumeet EMIT-8013-BL

Classic aesthetic.

What we like most about Plumeet EMIT-8013-BL is, without a doubt, its classic aesthetic. There's just something about that traditional dial-with-hands design that feels refreshing in the modern digital world dominated by ones and zeros. Its analogue display with black numerals and hands on a white dial just feels right compared to its digital counterparts.

Though it isn't like the model's all old school either. No, it makes use of a lot of modern ideas and design philosophies and it does so rather well. Sure, the quartz mechanism may seem traditional but it is devoid of the usual ticking sound that plagued older clocks.

In the functionality department, the model does not disappoint either. The snooze button delays the alarm for 5 minutes every time until you switch it off. Its Ascending Alarm function initiates the alarm with but a soft beep, then gradually increases the volume, again, until you switch it off. The nightlight function is great for kids and people who aren't able to sleep in complete darkness. Plus, it can be used as a flashlight for bedtime reading.

The only thing we aren't exactly psyched about here is the dials. Hidden behind the display, they're a bit inconvenient and awkward to access.

Other than that, by taking a page from the old design book and combining it with modern-day ideas and practices, the people behind Plumeet EMIT-8013-BL have been able to create an excellent travel alarm clock, both from the aesthetics and practicality standpoints. Plus, it is practically silent.

Review of Plumeet EMIT-8013-BL Travel Alarm Clock with Snooze and Nightlight

iiwey HO011

Double the alarms.

This entry here gives you the most value for your money. For 10 quid, you receive a feature-rich, practical, and handy alarm clock equally suitable for the road and home use.

It isn't flawless but, for the most part, the only complaint we have is the instruction manual. While the latter is a little uninformative and difficult to follow, we don't really have any gripes with the alarm clock itself. In fact, in more ways than one, this is a better clock than just about any other option in this price range.

Its biggest selling point is probably the ability to set two separate alarms. While it is nothing we haven't seen before in smartphones, you'll be hard-pressed to find this feature in a budget travel alarm clock. You can use the first alarm to help you wake up in the morning and the second as a reminder.

On top of its dual alarm functionality, the model includes a thermometer and a gravity sensor. While the former is straightforward and hardly requires any explanation, the aforementioned sensor is a slightly rarer animal . Simply put, what this sensor does is give you the ability to flip the alarm clock and allow the screen to buckle to the desktop. After that, it stops ringing. You put the clock back on and the ringing continues, a really nice option to have at your disposal.

In conclusion, what we have here is a good travel alarm clock for people who find it difficult waking up in the morning, doesn't matter the environment and the setting. That being said, the device is just as suitable for organised individuals who like to stick to a schedule and make the most of every day.

Review of iiwey HO011 Dual Alarm Clocks with Temperature Display

What Is a Travel Alarm Clock?

Like it or not, everyone has to wake up in the morning. Whether you're going to work, school, have to wake up early for a meeting or to finish every task you've set for yourself, you'll probably have to wake up earlier than your internal clock cares for. It's been the case for almost 200 years now as the very first alarm clock has been invented back in the mid-19th century. Since then, alarm clocks have seen quite a few developments but the core principles remained the same.

For the most part, the difference between a travel model and a regular alarm clock is minuscule. A few decades ago, most alarm clocks had to be plugged into an electrical outlet in order to work. These days, both travel and traditional alarm clocks usually run on batteries. A travel model, more often than not, will be smaller in size and feature the sort of design that would make it easier and more convenient to transport. But, again, you'll hardly find a whole lot of difference between these travels alarm clocks and standard alarm clocks.

The worst part of the travelling experience is usually the ride/flight from one destination to the other. With a proper travel pillow , that experience will become a lot more comfortable. And, with a right travel mug , you'll be able to stay hydrated and always have a drink at hand no matter where you go or end up.

Utter the words ‘alarm clock’ to anyone born in this century, and they may look at you in undisguised bewilderment. For the young, such things may as well be ancient relics unearthed by Indiana Jones. But alarm clocks still have their uses, especially when you’re on the road.

Sure you could rely on your phone’s alarm, but if you’re travelling somewhere without the right adaptors or sans plug, there’s the risk that you’ll be out of battery and stranded if you miss your wake-up time.

This might not be such a huge catastrophe if it’s the first day of your holiday and you’re on leisure mode.

But consider if you’re catching a connecting flight, need to board an early train, have to meet your tour guide, or just want to get a head-start on the crowds by seeing the sights before peak visiting hours. And that’s not to mention the disaster that could potentially ensue if you’re travelling for business and miss a crucial meeting that you’ve travelled across multiple time zones for.

So while a travel alarm clock may feel like an ancient artefact, there are still plenty of uses for them in the modern world.

To prove it, we’ve rounded up the nicest, most compact and smartest alarm clocks that should be packed as an order of priority, right after your passport and tickets.

It’s time to upgrade your bedroom setup

best smart alarm clocks

It doesn’t matter if you’re an early bird or a night owl, having a trusty alarm clock on your bedside table is a great way of maintaining a healthy sleep schedule. While the blue light from late-night smartphone sessions could disrupt your natural sleep-wake cycle , that doesn’t mean you have to banish all forms of technology from the bedroom.

One of the most convenient ways to upgrade your sleeping setup is by investing in a smart alarm clock. These internet-connected devices not only show you the time but also let you set alerts, and listen to music or news briefings with your morning coffee.

They can also control other smart home gadgets like lights , locks , cameras and thermostats with quick voice commands, all while leaving your smartphone away from your bedside. We recommend looking into the best sunrise alarm clocks and considering DAB radios with alarm functions. To reduce blue light exposure, consider switching your phone to a Kindle to read before you sleep.

Amazon echo dot, how the gh tech team tests smart alarm clocks.

We test the best smart clocks by setting them up in a bedroom and scheduling multiple daily alarms to find out how effective they are at helping us to wake up in the morning.

But that’s not all: we also check out the capabilities of the voice assistant , the speaker volume and build quality, while (if applicable) judging how clear and smooth the screen is to use. Lastly, we find out how easily they integrate with other smart home devices.

If you don’t want another screen in your bedroom, this version of the 5th generation Echo Dot speaker doubles as a brilliant smart alarm clock. It’s powered by Amazon Alexa , which we found to be consistently reliable during testing. This ball-shaped gadget is ideal if you need an easy-to-use bedroom helper, with a clear LED panel on the front showing the time, alongside weather icons and song titles if you’re listening to music.

We found that the speakers are more than loud enough for a bedroom setting, and integration with other smart gear (we tested it with the Wiz table lamp ) is simple, with the Alexa app offering clear instructions on how to pair, change settings and set routines. That last one is especially useful for linking devices – for example dimming lights and playing some calming music to help you sleep, at a specific time. You can snooze an alarm with a tap to the top of the device, and we like that it has a sensor to show the temperature of a room - ideal for parents who want to monitor how hot or cold the space is for a newborn.

Key specifications

With Alexa software smarts, the Show 5 is a wifi-connected display that’s also one of our favourite bedside smart clocks.

Unlike the Echo Dot with Clock, this has a five-inch touchscreen so you can access apps like Netflix , Audible , Prime Video or Spotify and customise what pictures are showing (via Amazon Photos or Facebook) on the screen alongside the time and weather.

It can also be controlled with your voice instead of touch, used to set reminders, hear the news, set timers or interact with other Alexa devices installed around your home, like the Ring Video Doorbell or the Amazon smart plug . Who is it for? Anyone who wants an Alexa-powered alarm clock that’s also a lovely little smart display .

If you want an even larger screen and prefer Amazon's voice assistant over Google, we advise going for the Echo Show 8. As the name suggests, you’re getting a more expansive 8-inch colour touch display, plus a few upgrades over its smaller sibling.

Compared to the Echo Show 5, the built-in camera is 13MP instead of 2MP, an adaptive mode adjusts screen brightness and colour to your surroundings, it has a faster processor, and it has better speakers with support for spatial audio. That’s about it, though, the Echo Show 8 is essentially a bulkier Echo Show 5 and it’s also identical in terms of its smart home compatibility, app support and button layout.

This model tracks your physical movements on a video call, but we don’t think that’s too much of a big deal when it comes to using it as an alarm clock. Still, for anyone who loves Alexa and finds a big screen a bit more comfortable to look at, this is one of the best options.

The Nest Hub has everything you need from a smart alarm clock. The 7-inch display feels great to use, the speakers are loud and clear, the voice assistant is reliable and there are lots of built-in apps, including YouTube, Spotify and Google Photos.

There’s also wide support for Google-compatible smart home devices and it easily lets you control gadgets like lights and thermostats with “Hey Google” commands. Best of all: it has a dedicated Sleep Sensing mode that uses radar to track the movements and breathing of the person who is resting closest to the display, later showing a report about how well they slept during the night.

Sleep Sensing has been available as a preview on this device, but to keep using it in the future, it will require a subscription service, Fitbit Premium, which costs £7.99 a month or £79.99 a year. If you want to go super-size, we are also fans of the Nest Hub Max for £219, which comes with an expansive 10-inch display.

One of Amazon's most affordable speakers, the Echo Dot has an identical design as the version with the clock, but this can only tell you the time via the Alexa voice assistant.

While we much prefer the Echo Dot with Clock as a bedside helper, this is a great budget-friendly option if you don't mind not getting the LED display.

For the most compact option Amazon makes, you could also pick the Echo Pop , which is about half the size of an Echo Dot. It's by far the most affordable way to get Alexa integrated into your home setup.

What to consider when buying a smart alarm clock

Don't buy before considering these points:

Voice assistant

You can control all the smart alarm clocks on our list with your voice, and they run on either Google Assistant (triggered with the term “Hey Google”) or Alexa (“triggered with the word “Alexa”). Google doesn’t let you change the wake word, but Alexa can be changed to Amazon, Computer, Echo or Ziggy.

In day-to-day use, the two assistants are almost identical in terms of how they work and reliability. So, choose the one that fits best with the rest of the tech around your home as the assistant and gadgets of the same brand are designed to connect seamlessly. If you have lots of Amazon products installed, they will work best with Alexa. The same is true of Google.

You can physically see the time on all our favourite smart alarm clocks – but not all come with a large touch screen.

That means you’ll need to consider what you need from the device. If you want it to double as an entertainment hub for watching videos or work as a digital photo frame, get a more powerful model like the Nest Hub or Echo Show, but if it’s just the basics you’re after, ditch the screen to keep costs down.

If your bedside table has limited space, you’ll need to consider the size of the alarm clock. None of our top choices are huge (if you have zero room you can check out the wall-mountable Echo Show 15 ) but some models are certainly more discreet.

The Echo Dot is a ball shape that blends into your decor due to its smaller stature, but larger devices like the Echo Show 8 or Google Nest Hub are impossible to miss.

A small but important consideration: all of the smart alarm clocks on our list are wired, so they will all need to be placed close to a plug socket.

App support

The software is limited on basic smart alarm clocks, but the big-screen models are also full-blown smart speakers and displays that can access apps like Netflix, Prime Video, Audible, Spotify, YouTube, Philips Hue and Twitch.

Each model on our list has an official app ( Alexa or Google Home ) that’s used to change settings and manage routines, but only the larger devices with screens can act as entertainment hubs, make video calls, view daily calendars, show your family photos or read dinner recipes .

Best features to look for in an alarm clock

Best features to look for in an alarm clock

Choosing an alarm clock can be quite time consuming as we all want to ensure we are starting the day the right way. For some, simple setting an alarm on a mobile phone will be suffice. However, others may wish to choose a physical alarm clock unit. So, what are the key features to consider?

Simplicity of a basic clock

You may wish to go for a classic style of a basic clock. These alarm clocks offer the basic function of an operating clock with an alarm. Although they have a simple to design, they can be straightforward and easy to use. Featured below is the Acctim Hilda Retro Alarm Clock – Pigeon Grey (947/0978).

travel alarm clock argos

Digital display

Digital displays are also increasingly popular. Depending on the model, you may find the alarm clock gives the options for a 12 hour clock or a 24 hour clock. This allows users more preference.

Calendar options

Similar to a standard digital display, some alarm clocks offer an inbuilt calendar. This can add even more personalisation for users. However, this may not be suitable for those who want pure simplicity as the display will feature the day and date, as well as the time.

travel alarm clock argos

Control over alarm sounds

If you hate the sound of an alarm but still want to be woken up, you’ll want an alarm clock which offers control over the sounds. For example, some alarm clocks will provide a variety of different alarm tones, or even the option to start the day by switching immediately to your favourite radio station.

Getting a projector as an additional feature

When waking up in the morning, you may wish to have the time directly in front of you or projected onto the ceiling above you. If that’s the case, you may want to consider if the alarm clock has the ability to project the time. Featured below is the Bush Projection Alarm Clock (913/4087).

travel alarm clock argos

Lights and atmosphere

If you wish to start the day calm, it is likely that you’ll want an alarm clock which will help to produce a calming atmosphere. If this is the case, a key feature you’ll be looking for is lighting. Some alarm clocks have the ability to create an atmosphere with soft, coloured lighting. Below is the Lumie Bodyclock Glow 150 Wake-Up Alarm Clock (916/7607).

So which do you pick?

Overall, there are many features to consider when choosing your alarm clock. We recommend listing what is most important to you, and basing the choice on these qualities.

Is It Safe in Moscow?

travel alarm clock argos

Stanislav Solntsev / Getty Images

When you visit Moscow , Russia, you’re seeing one of the world’s largest, and most expensive, capital cities . While there is a history of violent crime against foreign journalists and aid personnel in Russia, a trip to Moscow is usually safe for mainstream travelers. Most tourists in Moscow only face potential issues with petty crime, though terrorism is also a concern. Visitors should stick to the principal tourist areas and abide by the local security advice.

Travel Advisories

  • The U.S. Department of State urges travelers to avoid travel to Russia because of COVID-19 and to "exercise increased caution due to terrorism, harassment, and the arbitrary enforcement of local laws."
  • Anyone exploring more of Russia should avoid "The North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mount Elbrus, due to terrorism, kidnapping,   and   risk of civil unrest." Also, travelers should stay away from "Crimea due to Russia’s occupation of the Ukrainian territory   and   abuses by its occupying authorities."
  • Canada states travelers should use a high degree of caution in Russia due to the threat of terrorism and crime.

Is Moscow Dangerous?

The Moscow city center is typically safe. In general, the closer you are to the Kremlin , the better. Travelers mainly need to be aware of their surroundings and look out for petty crime. Be especially careful in tourist areas such as Arbat Street and crowded places like the Moscow Metro transit system. The suburbs are also generally fine, though it is advised to stay away from Maryino and Perovo districts.

Terrorism has occurred in the Moscow area, leading authorities to increase security measures. Be more careful at tourist and transportation hubs, places of worship, government buildings, schools, airports, crowds, open markets, and additional tourist sites.

Pickpockets and purse snatching happen often in Russia, perpetrated by groups of children and teenagers who distract tourists to get their wallets and credit cards. Beware of people asking you for help, who then trick you into their scheme. Don’t expect a backpack to be a safe bag bet; instead, invest in something that you can clutch close to your body or purchase a money belt . Always diversify, storing some money in a separate location so that if you are pickpocketed, you'll have cash elsewhere. Keep an eye out for thieves in public transportation, underground walkways, tourist spots, restaurants, hotel rooms and homes, restaurants, and markets.

Is Moscow Safe for Solo Travelers?

Large cities like Moscow in Russia are overall fairly safe if you are traveling alone, and the Moscow Metro public transit is a secure and easy way to get around. But it is still a good idea to follow basic precautions as in any destination. Avoid exploring alone at night, especially in bad areas. You may want to learn some basic Russian phrases or bring a dictionary, as many locals don't speak English. However, in case you need any help, there are tourist police that speak English. Also, exploring with other trusted travelers and locals or on professional tours is often a good way to feel safe.

Is Moscow Safe for Female Travelers?

Catcalling and street harassment are infrequent in Moscow and the rest of Russia and females traveling alone don't usually have problems. There are plenty of police officers on the streets as well. Still, it serves to stick to Moscow's well-lit, public areas, avoid solo night walks, and use your instincts. Women frequenting bars may take receive some friendly attention. Females can wear whatever they want, but those entering Orthodox churches will be required to cover up. Though women in Russia are independent, domestic violence and other inequality issues take place regularly.

Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Russia is not known as a gay-friendly country. However, Moscow is one of the more welcoming cities with a blooming LGBTQ+ community and many friendly restaurants, bars, clubs, and other venues. Hate crimes in Russia have increased since the 2013 anti-gay propaganda law. Openly LGBTQ+ tourists in this conservative country may experience homophobic remarks, discrimination, or even violence, especially if traveling with a partner. Also, while women hold hands or hug publicly—whether romantically involved or not—men should avoid public displays of affection to prevent being insulted or other issues.

Safety Tips for BIPOC Travelers

Moscow  and other big cities in Russia have sizable populations of various cultures, so discrimination against BIPOC travelers is rarer than in other parts of the country where it can become dangerous. Some people living in Russia who are Black, Asian, Jewish, and from other backgrounds have experienced racial discrimination and violence. Tourists won't usually experience overt racism but may be the recipients of some stares. If anyone should bother you, be polite and resist being taunted into physically defending yourself.

Safety Tips for Travelers

Travelers should consider the following general tips when visiting:

  • It's best not to drink the tap water. If you do, boil it before drinking, though showering is safe and the amount used to brush teeth is generally not harmful. Mineral water is widely drunk, especially at restaurants, and if you prefer not to have it carbonated ask for “ voda byez gaz” (water without gas).
  • If you need emergency assistance in case of fire, terrorism, medical issues, or more, dial 112 in Russia for bilingual operators.
  • Be judicious about taking photographs, especially of police or officials. This can potentially bring unwanted attention to yourself by members of law enforcement who won’t mind asking to see your passport. Also avoid snapping photos of official-looking buildings, such as embassies and government headquarters.
  • Carry your passport in as secure a manner as possible. If you get stopped for any reason by the police, they can fine or arrest you if you don't have the document with you. Also, keep photocopies of your passport, the page on which your travel visa appears, and any other documents that relate to your stay in Russia.
  • Use official taxis only and steer clear of illegal taxi companies, especially at night. Ask your hotel to call a reputable taxi company.

Where Kamala Harris Stands on the Issues: Abortion, Immigration and More

She wants to protect the right to abortion nationally. Here’s what else to know about her positions.

  • Published July 21, 2024 Updated Sept. 11, 2024, 11:38 a.m. ET

Follow along with live updates and debate analysis on the Trump and Harris campaigns .

With Vice President Kamala Harris having replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.

Climate change

Ms. Harris has supported the Biden administration’s climate efforts , including legislation that provided hundreds of billions of dollars in tax credits and rebates for renewable energy and electric vehicles.

“It is clear the clock is not just ticking, it is banging,” she said in a speech last year , referring to increasingly severe and frequent disasters spurred by climate change. “And that is why, one year ago, President Biden and I made the largest climate investment in America’s history.”

During her 2020 presidential campaign, she emphasized the need for environmental justice , a framework that calls for policies to address the adverse effects that climate change has on poor communities and people of color. She has emphasized that as vice president as well.

In 2019, Ms. Harris, then a senator, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, introduced legislation that would have evaluated environmental rules and laws by how they affected low-income communities. It would have also established an independent Office of Climate and Environmental Justice Accountability and created a “senior adviser on climate justice” within several federal agencies. In 2020, Ms. Harris introduced a more sweeping version of the bill. None of the legislation was passed.

Ms. Harris was tasked with leading the Biden administration’s efforts to secure voting rights legislation, a job she asked for . The legislation — which went through several iterations but was ultimately blocked in the Senate — would have countered voting restrictions in Republican-led states, limited gerrymandering and regulated campaign finance more strictly.

This year, she met with voting rights advocates and described a strategy that included creating a task force on threats to election workers and challenging state voting restrictions in court.

She has condemned former President Donald J. Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. In a speech in 2022 marking the anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, she said that day had showed “what our nation would look like if the forces who seek to dismantle our democracy are successful.” She added, “What was at stake then, and now, is the right to have our future decided the way the Constitution prescribes it: by we the people, all the people.”

Economic policy

In campaign events this year, Ms. Harris has promoted the Biden administration’s economic policies, including the infrastructure bill that Mr. Biden signed, funding for small businesses, a provision in the Inflation Reduction Act that capped the cost of insulin for people on Medicare and student debt forgiveness.

She indicated at an event in May that the administration’s policies to combat climate change would also bring economic benefits by creating jobs in the renewable energy industry. At another event , she promoted more than $100 million in Energy Department grants for auto parts manufacturers to pivot to electric vehicles, which she said would “help to keep our auto supply chains here in America.”

As a senator, she introduced legislation that would have provided a tax credit of up to $6,000 for middle- and low-income families, a proposal she emphasized during her presidential campaign as a way to address income inequality.

Immigration

One of Ms. Harris’s mandates as vice president has been to address the root causes of migration from Latin America, like poverty and violence in migrants’ home countries. Last year, she announced $950 million in pledges from private companies to support Central American communities. Similar commitments made previously totaled about $3 billion.

In 2021, she visited the U.S.-Mexico border and said : “This issue cannot be reduced to a political issue. We’re talking about children, we’re talking about families, we are talking about suffering.”

More recently, she backed a bipartisan border security deal that Mr. Biden endorsed but Mr. Trump, by urging Republican lawmakers to kill it , effectively torpedoed. The legislation would have closed the border if crossings reached a set threshold, and it would have funded thousands of new border security agents and asylum officers. “We are very clear, and I think most Americans are clear, that we have a broken immigration system and we need to fix it,” Ms. Harris said in March .

Israel and Gaza

Ms. Harris called in March for an “immediate cease-fire” in Gaza and described the situation there as a “humanitarian catastrophe.” She said that “the threat Hamas poses to the people of Israel must be eliminated” but also that “too many innocent Palestinians have been killed.”

In an interview later that month , she emphasized her opposition to an Israeli invasion of Rafah, the city in southern Gaza to which more than a million people had fled. “I have studied the maps,” she said. “There’s nowhere for those folks to go, and we’re looking at about 1.5 million people in Rafah who are there because they were told to go there, most of them.”

She has said on multiple occasions that she supports a two-state solution.

Racial justice

Racial justice was a theme of Ms. Harris’s presidential campaign. In a memorable debate exchange in 2019 , she denounced Mr. Biden’s past work with segregationist senators and opposition to school busing mandates.

She has called for ending mandatory minimum sentences, cash bail and the death penalty, which disproportionately affect people of color.

Amid the protests that followed the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, she was one of the senators who introduced the Justice in Policing Act, which would have made it easier to prosecute police officers, created a national registry of police misconduct and required officers to complete training on racial profiling. It was not passed.

Her record as a prosecutor also came into play during her presidential campaign. Critics noted that as attorney general of California, she had generally avoided stepping in to investigate police killings.
