What You Will Need to Tour Buenos Aires

View along Avenida 9 de Julio, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Before you set off on our Buenos Aires free walking tour, make sure you are prepared for the adventure. You won’t need much, but the following items are recommended.

Walking Shoes

A comfortable pair of city trekking shoes are essential for exploring Buenos Aires sights on foot. Kris likes these shoes my Merrell and I prefer these by Columbia .

Water and Snacks

Bring a water bottle and snacks. While there are plenty of places to buy food and drinks along the way, it’s better to already have some with you.

Travel Camera and Day Bag

Capture the iconic sights of Buenos Aires with an actual travel camera ! We use a DSLR Canon Rebel with a 18-135mm lens for high-quality photos.

Protection from the Elements

In the summertime, make sure to slather on the sunscreen and bring a wide-brimmed travel hat for shade. In other seasons, make sure to have a travel umbrella and a packable rain coat .

Day Bag and Money Belt

A good travel day bag is essential on Self Guided Walking Tours of Buenos Aires. It is best to use a day pack that has multiple zippered compartments – and if you opt to use a small backpack , it is best to wear it on your chest in crowded spaces.

Additionally, wear a slim money belt concealed beneath your clothes. BA is notorious for pickpockets, so make sure you keep your cash and personal items secure. In addition to the money belt, I have used a convenient bra stash .

Internet Connection

In order to use the map links provided while touring Buenos Aires, travelers will need an internet connection. We use Pocket Wifi to stay connected wherever we are in the world!

Argentina Travel Insurance

Basic travel insurance may come in handy at the worst times – like if you require emergency medical attention , the airline loses your luggage or are the victim of theft.

#1 Plaza Dorrego

View of Plaza Dorrego, Buenos Aires, Argentina

MAP . At the heart of the San Telmo District is Plaza Dorrego, the second-oldest square in the city – and the perfect place to start a day of Buenos Aires sightseeing. The square is ringed with cafes and bars that spill into the open space.

Bar Plaza Dorrego, Buenos Aires, Argentina

On Sundays, Plaza Dorrego is filled with vendors of the famous antique market, Feria de San Telmo. Street musicians and tango dancers often perform in the square, as well. Start your day with a beverage from Bar Plaza Dorrego, a traditional café that celebrates the history of Buenos Aires…and is also a great spot for Buenos Aires people watching!

#2 Mercado San Telmo

Mercado San Telmos sign on Defensa Street in Buenos Aires, Argentina

MAP . A Buenos Aires landmark and national monument, the Mercado San Telmo building dates to 1897. Constructed with iron, metal and glass, the structure is as impressive as the vendors’ displays.

Produce stands, butchers and bakeries share the space with small restaurants and antique shops. Wander through the beautiful market space – and maybe pick up some snacks for your Buenos Aires walk.

#3 Defensa Street, Buenos Aires

Man sings and plays guitar on Defensa Street in Buenos Aires, Argentina

MAP . Strolling the length of Calle Defensa is most popular on Sundays when it is filled with the overflow of vendors from the Plaza Dorrego Flea Market.

Visitors on other days of the week, however, can wander north along the cobblestone street and admire the architecture. Travelers may also want to visit El Zanjon, a archaeological museum featuring tunnels and artifacts from the first settlement in 1536.

#4 San Ignacio de Loyola Church

Exterior, Iglesia de San Ignaciso de Loyola, Buenos Aires, Argentina

MAP . Iglesia Saint Ignatius is the oldest church in Buenos Aires. Completed in 1722, the façade and south tower date to 1686 and are among the oldest structures in all of BA. This Roman Catholic Church is preserved as a National Historic Monument.

#5 Manzana de las Luces (Block of Enlightenment)

MAP . Both Iglesia St. Ignatius and the building complex directly to the west comprise the Manzana de las Luces – or Block of Enlightenment – which is a historical culture center. The colonial building was constructed in the late 1600s as part of the Jesuit compound and features an arcade courtyard. Inside, there are antique shops and a restaurant.

#6 Puerto Madero Waterfront Walk

Tall Buildings, Puerto Madero in Buenos Aires, Argentina

MAP . In the late 1800s, the Rio Darsena Sur served as the main docks of Buenos Aires. However, shortly after the then state-of-the-art docks were built, bigger cargo ships started arriving and the New Port (Puerto Nuevo) was built. The warehouses and riverside fell to disuse and became a blight on the city.

Buenos Aires, Puerto Madero District, Argentina

In the 1990s, the urban area was revitalized – turning old warehouses into upscale accommodations and office space. The now trendy area, which still features elements of a port, is one of the most sought-after areas to live in Buenos Aires. High-rises stand on the eastern bank and house corporate headquarters, posh condos and high-end hotels.

#7 Plaza de Mayo

Piramide de Mayo - May Pyramid - monument on Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires, Argentina

MAP . Plaza de Mayo is the central square of Buenos Aires and the heart of Argentina’s politics. The square is named for the successful May Revolution of 1810 when the colony fought for its independence from Spain. Throughout history, Plaza de Mayo has been the site of numerous political demonstrations and is surrounded by some of Buenos Aires’ most famous landmarks.

Monuments on Plaza de Mayo

In addition to the buildings that ring the square, there are two important Plaza de Mayo monuments: The May Pyramid and the Belgrano Monument.

The May Pyramid – or Piramide de Mayo – sits in the center of the square and ranks as the first (and oldest) monument in Buenos Aires. The 61-foot-tall slender pyramid was erected in 1811 in celebration of the one-year anniversary of the May Revolution.

The equestrian statue of General Manuel Belgrano stands at the east end of the square in front of Casa Rosada. A military leader, Belgrano is recognized as one of Argentina’s liberators – or Libertadores. The statue shows Belgrano hoisting the Argentinian flag, which he is credited with designing.

#8 Casa Rosada Buenos Aires

Casa Rosada and water fountain on Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires, Argentina

MAP . The Pink House on the east end of the square, Casa Rosada, is the office of the president of Argentina. The official name of the building is Casa de Gobierno, or Government House, and it is a National Historic Monument of Argentina. The current structure evolved from a fort that dates to 1594. Inside, there is a historical museum that displays presidential memorabilia.

#9 Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires

Metropolitan Cathedral on Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires, Argentina

MAP . The columned, neoclassical Catedral Metropolitana resembles a stoic government building more than a church. After being rebuilt numerous times due to faulty plans, the cathedral that now stands was completed in 1791. The façade, however, would take another 90 years to be decorated. The interior of the church has 3 aisles, numerous side chapels and is adorned in art.

Interior of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires

The Metropolitan Cathedral is the home church of Pope Francis. On the right aisle is the Mausoleum of General Jose de San Martin. The General is a national hero and is credited for liberating South America from the Spanish. The black tomb is surrounded by three statues, which represent Argentina, Chile and Peru.

In addition to General San Martin, the remains of two other generals and those of the Unknown Soldier of the Independence are housed at the grave site. The mausoleum is protected by two soldiers and you may even witness the Changing of the Guards.

#10 Florida Street

MAP . A must-visit on walking tours of Buenos Aires, Florida Street is the city’s famous pedestrian zone. Marking the heart of the commercial district, Calle Florida is lined with shops and restaurants. The throughfare has a long history, but was only closed to car traffic in 1971. Today, the walkable area attracts locals, tourists, street performers and money exchangers.

#11 Avenida 9 de Julio and The Obelisk

Avenida 9 de Julio crossing walk in Buenos Aires, Argentina

MAP . Named in honor of the Argentina Day of Independence (July 9, 1816), the wide 9 de Julio Avenue in Buenos Aires carries seven lanes of traffic in each direction . The width of the street is equal to an entire city block – and it’s often claimed to be the widest street in the world. Crossing the street requires a few minutes, because pedestrians are made to stop at several points while attempting to get from one side to the other.

View of the Obelisk, Buenos Aires, Argentina

The Obelisco de Buenos Aires that stands in the center of Plaza de la Republic at the intersection of 9 de Julio and Corrientes is a city icon. The 235-foot-tall monument was built in 1936 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the city.

#12 Teatro Colon on Plaza Lavalle

Palace of Justice on Lavalle Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina

MAP . Plaza Lavalle is a green park that stretches three city blocks. Although the park is not of major importance, there are several significant buildings that border the park.

The most important buildings that overlook the park are the Teatro Colon Opera House, the Federal Courthouse (housing the Supreme Court), Escuela Presidente Roca (a public school) and Teatro Nacional Cervantes (an ornately decorated theater).

View of Plaza Lavalle, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Teatro Colon first opened in 1857, but the present building dates to 1908. The world-famous theater is consistently ranked as one of the top opera houses in the world and has notably superb acoustics. Visitors who cannot attend a performance can take one of the guided tours.

#13 El Ateneo Grand Splendid Bookstore

MAP . Perhaps the World’s Most Beautiful Bookstore, the El Ateneo Grand Splendid bookshop resides inside a historic theater. Bookshelves occupy the space where there were once theater seats and rows of books line the upper balconies. The red velvet curtain still frames the stage, where visitors can sit and sip coffee from the on-site café.

#14 Buller Brew Pub

Buller Brew Pub, Buenos Aires, Argentina

MAP . One of the pioneers of craft beer in Buenos Aires, Buller has been brewing since 1999. The brew pub offers a range of beers, a full menu and a rooftop view. Located across the street from the Recoleta Cemetery, it’s a good spot for lunch and maybe even a sampler platter of beer before continuing on your walking tour of Buenos Aires.

#15 Recoleta Cemetery

Mausoleums and sculptures at Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires, Argentina

MAP . The Recoleta District is considered to be one of the wealthiest areas of Buenos Aires. Known for its Beaux-Arts architecture, Recoleta is home to luxurious shops, art galleries, museums and mansions. However, the most notable destination in the district is the famous Recoleta Cemetery.

Comprised of nearly 7,000 above-ground tombs, the Recoleta Cemetery is the final resting place for the city’s upper-class citizens, military heroes, presidents and – most famously – Eva Peron.

Sculpture inside mausoleum at Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires, Argentina

The land is rumored to be the most expensive real estate in Buenos Aires. Graves range from elaborate and intricate to dilapidated and derelict, but even the ones that were almost falling down have a sense of beauty.

Like other renowned cemeteries (for instance Pere Lachaise in Paris and Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv ), wandering the paths at Recoleta Cemetery is like walking through an open-air museum of sculptures.

Free Walking Tour Recoleta Cemetery

Path along mausoleums at Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires, Argentina

There are free, English-speaking Recoleta Buenos Aires cemetery tours. One was beginning as we wandered in, so we joined the Recoleta Cemetery Tour to listen to the stories. We learned about the architecture, the famous (and not-so-famous) people buried at the cemetery and how they arrived at their tombs.

Tales of ghosts (like that of Rufina Cambaceres, who was buried alive) and superstitions (like rubbing the nose of a dog statue for good luck) were entertaining anecdotes. Most informative was the story of Eva Peron and how it took 20 years after her death before she – or what is believed to be her – was buried with her family at Recoleta Cemetery.

#16 Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar

Basílica Nuestra Señora del Pilar, Buenos Aires, Argentina

MAP . The stark white Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar – or Iglesia de Nuestra Senora del Pilar – ranks as the second-oldest Buenos Aires church. Built in 1732 for the Franciscan monastery, the church has a richly decorated interior that glitters with gold accents.

#17 Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes

MAP . One of the best art museums in Buenos Aires, the Bellas Artes museum features international and Argentinian art. Housing one of the largest collections of art in Latin America (including masterpieces by Monet, Rodin and Van Gogh), the museum occupies a former pumping station. Most of the exhibits are free to visit.

#18 Floralis Generica

Floralis Generica flower sculpture in Buenos Aires, Argentina

MAP . The steel flower sculpture, Floralis Generica, sits at the center of Parque Naciones Unidas surrounded by water from a small pond. The petals open in the morning and close again each day at sunset. The 75-foot-tall sculpture was a gift to Buenos Aires in 2002 by late Argentinian artist Eduardo Catalano.

Note: The distance between these two sights is 1.5 miles. Hop on a bus or grab an Uber if you need a break from walking.

#19 Monument to the Carta Magna and Four Regions

Monument to the Magna Carta and the Four Regions, Buenos Aires, Argentina

MAP . The 80-foot-tall brass and marble Monument to the Carta Magna and Four Regions of Argentina is one of the most emblematic tributes to Argentina’s independence. It stands in the center of a roundabout at the intersection of Libertador and General Sarmiento Avenues.

Often referred to by the nickname, “Monument of the Spanish,” the statue was gifted to the city in 1910 by Spanish residents living in Argentina to celebrate 100 years since the May Revolution. Due to several delays (the designer passing away, supplies sinking in the ocean and other interruptions), the monument was not completed until 1927.

The Monument to the Carta Magna and Four Regions of Argentina – or Monumento a La Carta Magna y las Cuatro Regiones Argentinas – is symbolic of ‘The Republic’ and the four regions: El Plata, Pampa, Andes and Chaco. Phrases from the constitution are etched on the base.

#20 Paseo El Rosedal Garden

Walk at Tres de Febrero Park, Buenos Aires, Argentina

MAP . The largest district in Buenos Aires, Palermo is home to sprawling parks, fashion boutiques and lively nightlife. Palermo is ideal for leisurely window shopping and roaming in the park.

Almost 1,000 acres of gardens surround the Spaniards Monument. Formally called the February 3 Park – or Parque Tres de Febrero – it is often simply referred to as the Palermo Woods. The land was personal property of dictator Juan Manuel de Rosas. However, the estate was confiscated when he was overthrown in 1852 and transformed  into a public park.

Geese, Paseo El Rosedal Garden, Buenos Aires, Argentina

The planned parks include botanical gardens, rose gardens and the Japanese gardens. The walking paths (which are popular with dog walkers) lead to ponds and through woods. Also on site are the planetarium, the city zoo and museums.

#21 Plaza Italia Buenos Aires

MAP . A hub of transportation, Plaza Italia is dominated by the central equestrian statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi. On the northwest side of the plaza, there is a 2,000-year-old Roman column. The pillar was given to Buenos Aires by the city of Rome and ranks as one of the oldest monuments in the city.

#22 Palermo SoHo

Streets of Palermo District, Buenos Aires, Argentina

MAP . The tree-lined streets of Palermo SoHo – one of the many sub-districts within Palermo – beckon visitors to wander and explore….and shop and eat. Designers and fashionistas hang out in hip Palermo SoHo – and they do so alongside foodies and travelers. At the heart of the trendy district is Plaza Serrano (formally called Plazoteta Julio Cortazar) – an area that is packed with cafes, restaurants and bars.

#23 Food and Drinks in Palermo

Cafe in Palermo, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Like all good free walking tours in Buenos Aires, we are ending this walking tour with food and beverages. One of the top things to do in Palermo Buenos Aires is to dine out – so you are in the right place! Numerous traditional grill restaurants – or parrillas – are found in Palermo Soho, most notably La Cabrera.

Burger, fries and beer at Burger Joint in Palermo SoHo in Buenos Aires, Argentina

However, we headed straight to Burger Joint ( map ). The aptly-named restaurant serves incredible burgers at good prices. We recommend ordering the La Bleu, which is a grass-fed burger that is piled high with Roquefort cheese, spinach, roasted peppers, sautéed onions and mushrooms. For craft beer, check out Antares ( map ), one of our favorite mountain Breweries in Bariloche .

Tips for Walking in Buenos Aires, Argentina

View while Walking in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Our Self-Guided Walking Tour of Buenos Aires, Argentina covers some ground! While our walking tour is manageable for people who love to walk, there are lengthy stretches between the districts of Centro, Recoleta and Palermo.

Visitors with 2 Days in Buenos Aires

Visitors with at least two days in Buenos Aires can split the walk into two separate days of sightseeing: City center sights one day, then Recoleta and Palermo sights the following day. This will eliminate the long stretch between Centro and Recoleta. Breaking the walk up into two days also allows additional time to enjoy the sights along the way, like the museums and parks.

Getting around Buenos Aires

To cut down on the length of the walk, visitors can hop on public transport. We used the Subte (subway) to arrive at the starting point of our outlined tour of Buenos Aires. After that, the subway is not very useful for our sightseeing route. However, buses are frequent and Uber is also available in Buenos Aires.

Five Reasons to Take Our Tour

1. expert tour guides.

All of our guides are knowledgeable residents, friendly, professional and fun.

Our top-rating on TripAdvisor (770+ “5 star” reviews) proves they know how to give an incredible tour!

2. Intimate Tour Groups

Skip the noisy crowds, cramped buses, and rushed, scripted tours.

Explore the city with BuenosTours in a group of no more than 7 travelers, giving you ample opportunity to ask whatever questions interest you the most .

3. Walk Like a Local

Riding around on tour buses not only makes you feel like an outsider, but also creates a physical barrier to experiencing each neighborhood up close and personal.

Locals here enjoy walking, taking time to fully appreciate the city. So follow their lead on a walking tour.

Don’t worry about it being taxing: Buenos Aires is easy to walk, and flat as a pancake!

4. Your Tour, Your Language

Our guides are native English speakers, selected for their ability to serve as a cultural bridge during your travels.

Our tours feel like conversations with a good friend , rather than boring lists of facts read off a script in someone’s second language.

5. A Company You Can Trust

Our past clients say it best: “ book, walk, relax, enjoy ”.

With 18+ years specializing in semi-private & private walking tours, we’re so confident in what we do that we offer a 100% money-back satisfaction guarantee . No one has taken us up on it yet!

More kind words from our tour guests

“Our guide was absolutely fantastic and made the city personal and incredibly interesting for us.

He showed us his favorite local pizza and coffee places and it was like walking around the city with a friend we were visiting.”

CruiseHolidaysOakvil Oakville, Canada

“We learned new and old anecdotes that brought Buenos Aires to life in a unique way. We also loved being able to take the bus and subway (sounds silly but we did).

I would recommend this above any other daytime experience in BA.”

“After doing much internet research, I sought out BuenosTours. It exceeded my expectations, in a major way.

I travel throughout the world, and always seek to invest in one high-quality guided tour. I’ve done about a dozen. Without a doubt, my guide at BuenosTours was the best.”

  • We begin at 10am at an easy to find location in the Recoleta neighborhood*
  • This 7 hour tour ends at 5pm in the San Telmo neighborhood*, near plenty of fun spots to eat, drink and shop.
  • While our tours were not created with children in mind, they’re still welcome
  • Children aged 13 and above are charged the same price as adults
  • For every paying adult, one child aged 12 or under can be charged at half price
  • If you are booking for more children than adults, any children in excess of the total number of adults will be charged full price. But in such cases we highly recommend you contact us to book a fully private tour instead
  • It is impossible to predict how many people will be on each tour. That said…
  • The maximum number of guests on any tour will never exceed 7 adults
  • The minimum number of guests on any tour is… 1 person!
  • The most common number of people on a tour is between 2 and 5 people
  • Yes! You can also pay a small deposit online to reserve the tour, followed by the remainder in cash (US Dollars ONLY) to your guide at the start of the tour
  • Please contact us before booking if you wish to pay just a small online deposit to book your tour. However, please remember that if we receive another fully-paid booking directly through our website before we have received your deposit, then that fully-paid-for booking would take priority, as a matter of fairness.
  • We do also offer fully private walking tours which can be booked for any day, time, number of people and duration that works for you. Please contact us for more information
  • At present we do not offer any car or bus tours
  • Yes! As a solo traveler you can book for one person
  • If no one else joins the tour on the date you booked, it will still go ahead as a private tour just for you, at no extra cost
  • If you cancel at least 7 full calendar days in advance of your tour start time, or if it can’t take place for uncontrollable reasons (e.g. heavy rain or flooding) then there is no cancellation fee (i.e. we refund 100% of the price paid)
  • If you cancel with more than 1 full calendar day, but less than 7 full calendar days before your tour start time, you will be charged a 20% cancellation fee (of course, this fee can be avoided if we’re able to rebook your tour for another date instead of canceling)
  • If you cancel with 24 hours or less notice before your tour start time (or no show), you will be charged the full cost of your tour (again, this fee can be avoided if we’re able to rebook your tour for another date instead of canceling)
  • An exception to the above (to avoid the zero refund for cancellations with less than 24 hours notice) is for flight and cruise ship delays or cancellations. If your flight or cruise ship arrival is delayed or cancelled and as a result it means you have to cancel your tour, we will charge just the 20% cancellation fee (i.e. 80% refund), but only if you are able to let your tour guide know directly at least one hour before the tour start time
  • If it rains on the day of your tour, and the rain is either fairly light or intermittent, then we will continue with the tour – in this case you should bring an umbrellas and dress accordingly
  • We’ll still have fun, don’t worry!
  • In the case of heavy rain and/or flooding, the tour will most likely be canceled, and you will receive either a full refund, or if possible, be given the opportunity to rebook your tour for another date, at no extra cost
  • If you have any weather doubts on the day of the tour, please contact your guide directly using their cell phone number we will give you in advance
  • Please try to be on time if at all possible. Or even arrive a little early. This is for the sake of your guide, your fellow tour group members, and for yourself and your enjoyment of the tour!
  • That said, we understand that you can be delayed. Your guide and the tour group will wait 20 minutes for you after the stated tour start time.
  • Bear in mind that turning up late will mean missing on on some stuff and negatively affecting your tour experience
  • If you are more than 20 minutes late, you will almost certainly miss your tour
  • This full day (7 hour) tour usually involves around 8km (~5 miles) of walking
  • The tour includes a couple of rides on public transport, and a lunch break, so there are a few occasions where you’ll get to rest along the way
  • The walking difficultly level of this tour is easy to moderate (although on extremely hot days in the peak of summer it may feel more challenging)
  • We recommend the following…
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Water (although we provide a bottle and we can also stop for you to buy more along the way)
  • Just in case, some cash in Argentine Pesos, or failing that, US Dollars and/or a Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card (although please note that this is NOT a shopping tour and as such there will not be time for shopping during the tour)
  • In case rain looks likely (or even in the case of oppressive sun): an umbrella
  • Our daily boutique walking tour is available year round, on most dates, with the exception of:
  • December 24th
  • December 25th
  • January 1st
  • Very occasional other dates when we’re aware of major protests or strikes etc
  • At present we only offer tours in English, all given by fluent English speaking guides
  • Our tour guides of course also speak Spanish fluently, but the daily boutique walking tour is currently only given in English

One day in Buenos Aires: A Self-Guided Walking Tour

If you ask me, I will always advocate for you to spend as much time in Buenos Aires as possible.

There are enough things to do in Buenos Aires to fill weeks.

But, I know we don’t all have the luxury of time.

And with Buenos Aires being the gateway to Argentina many people are just passing through on their way to hike in Patagonia or drink wine in Mendoza .

If that’s you and you’re looking to maximize your short time in the city, look no further.

This is a detailed self-guided walking tour, the perfect way to spend only one day in Buenos Aires.

You’ll see the highlights, but beware, you’re going to hit the pavement hard so wear comfortable shoes and sunscreen and let’s go!

One Day in Buenos Aires: A Highlight Filled Walking Tour of Buenos Aires

Let’s go.

Reference the map below for the route and highlights.

Buenos Aires Walking Tour Map

The Obelisco

📍 Av. 9 de Julio y Av. Corrientes

walk tour buenos aires

While Buenos Aires isn’t a city made up of landmarks you need to tick off like many European cities, the Obelisco is indeed a must-see landmark.

You cannot skip it.

So I want you to begin your “Buenos Aires in a day” tour here.

This is THE meeting point for the city.

Major protests all find their way here.

And major celebrations do as well.

If you followed the 2022 World Cup, you’ll have seen how the entire city’s population joined together here to celebrate each win.

So much of Buenos Aires’ history has happened around this obelisk.

TIP: Take pictures in front of the giant BA sign and from the platform on Diagonal Norte (Mirador del Obelisco in Google Maps) for the best views.

Gaze southwards down 9 de Julio and you’ll see a giant profile of Evita on one of the skyscraper’s facades.

Look the other way and you’ll see the epic Teatro Colon. (If you have more time in the city later, a guided tour of the interior is worth doing).

Up and down Avenida Corrientes you’ll see neon lights and theaters.

This is Buenos Aires’ answer to Times Square and it comes to life after dark. With theater-goers crowding the sidewalks and pizza by the slice shops keeping them going.

From the Obelisco, walk to Confitería La Ideal for breakfast. Head one block down Corrientes , take a right onto Suipacha and there you are …

Breakfast in Confitería La Ideal

📍 Confitería La Ideal, Suipacha 384, San Nicol á s (cross street Avenida Corrientes)

walk tour buenos aires

You’ve surely heard of Café Tortoni, but it’s not the only historic café in the game here.

La Ideal is equally beautiful (in my opinion, more so) than Tortoni.

After a 7 year closure, it re-opened in 2023 completely renovated.

Start your morning here for an early breakfast.

And I mean early, you only have 1 day in Buenos Aires, don’t waste any daylight!

The pastries here are excellent (I love their vigilante) but they have full breakfasts if you need eggs or avocado toast to function.

Take a look around before you leave.

The entire space has been impeccably restored including the detailed glass dome in the center of the dining room.

Optional cappuccino at Le Caravelle

📍 Lavalle 726, Sán Nicolás

This second coffee option is pure indulgence.

You can skip this if you’re not into coffee.

You can do this instead of La Ideal if you don’t want a long breakfast.

Or you can indulge and do both… I would.

Le Caravelle makes the best cappuccino in Buenos Aires, and at only one block from La Ideal I simply couldn’t leave it off of this itinerary.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Café Le Caravelle (@cafelecaravelle)

This historic bar has been run by Italian immigrants since 1962.

Their cappuccino is like a volcano of foam that only by some work of magic doesn’t overflow onto the saucer.

Where La Ideal is pure European elegance, Le Caravelle is an unpretentious hole in the wall.

Grab a coffee at both to see both sides of Buenos Aires café culture.

Neither is more authentic than the other.

Florida Street

📍 Lavalle y Florida

walk tour buenos aires

From Le Caravelle, walk one block down Lavalle to reach the city’s most important pedestrian thoroughfare: Florida Street.

Take a right down Florida and walk towards Plaza de Mayo.

This street is the city’s shopping center (albeit a bit underwhelming in terms of shopping, to be honest).

Most notably, you’ll hear the cries of the arbolitos yelling “cambio, cambio, cambio!”

Arbolitos are the names given to these money changers. It means little trees and pays homage to the little green leaves of the dollars they work with.

Galería Guemes

📍 Florida 165, Mirador Galería Güem es Monday-Friday, 10 am – 1 pm and 2 pm – 4:40 pm

walk tour buenos aires

Walk three blocks down to Florida 165.

Galería Güemes is an elegant shopping gallery with one of the best and cheapest viewpoints in town.

Go inside and stay to the right hand side. The first elevator bank you’ll see to your right is the Mitre tower. You’ll see Mitre written above the archway.

Take the elevators to the 14th floor where you’ll be able to pay for entry to the mirador (viewpoint).

It always costs the peso equivalent of around 2 dollars and you’ll see downtown’s most iconic domes up close.

Note that it’s only open Monday through Friday, so if visiting on a weekend you won’t be able to access the viewpoint.

I still recommend ducking inside to see the beautiful gallery at ground level.

In fact, this gallery houses my favorite Christmas tree during the holiday season (read more about Christmas in Buenos Aires ).

Plaza de Mayo

📍 Plaza de Mayo

walk tour buenos aires

From Galeria Guemes snake your way to Plaza de Mayo.

So much of Argentina’s history has happened right here and you can’t spend just one day in Buenos Aires without visiting this historic space.

Find the pyramid in the center, this was the first monument in the city’s history, erected to honor the Revolución de Mayo.

The Madres de la Plaza de Mayo have been circling this monument since 1979, calling for their missing children and grandchildren that “disappeared” during the military dictatorship of the 1970’s.

To this day they still march every Thursday at 3:30.

walk tour buenos aires

What else to see in Plaza de Mayo? Stand in the center and spin around to see:

  • La Casa Rosada | The queen of the Plaza, this is the presidential palace. It’s similar to the White House in the US as in the president conducts business here. However, the residence is in Olivos, a northern suburb. The upstairs balcony just left of center is where Madonna is depicted belting out her famous “Don’t cry for me, Argentinaaaa!”
  • El Cabildo | Turn a 180 to have the Casa Rosada at your back and you’ll see a white colonial building, this is the Cabildo. It housed the Spanish colonial government and you’ll see one in many cities throughout Argentina. This one was shorted on either side to make way for the streets that border it. Today it houses a free history museum.
  • Catedral Metropolitan | Turn slightly to your right to see what looks like a military building with imposing columns along the front, that is the Metropolitan Cathedral. Go inside if you have time, it’s stunning. San Martin’s grave is inside a side chapel in the center on the right hand side, he is always guarded by two granaderos (the cavalry he founded).

From Plaza de Mayo we’ll work our way through San Telmo.

If you’re interested in seeing Puerto Madero’s modern waterfront, you have that option now.

If it’s not something you’re interested in, you can skip it and go straight to San Telmo.

Keep reading for both options, choose your adventure!

Choose your own adventure #1: Puerto Madero

📍 Puente de la Mujer, Puerto Madero

walk tour buenos aires

From Plaza de Mayo circle around the Casa Rosada and follow the pedestrian footpath straight to Puerto Madero.

You’ll go down a large staircase and walk towards the red brick warehouses turned loft apartments and the famous bridge, Puente de la Mujer.

You may even see tango dancers performing just before you reach the bridge.

Watch, take photos, leave a tip then continue your walk along the water.

Puerto Madero is the youngest neighborhood in the city, brought back to life around 30 years ago.

It’s safe but a bit sterile compared to the cool grunge of the rest of the city.

There are restaurants that line the waterfront but resist the urge to stop here. I find most to be underwhelming and overpriced, hold out (if you can) for San Telmo where I’ll list more lunch options than you’ll know what to do with.

To find your way back to San Telmo, wander down Puerto Madero as long as you like then hang a right on Avenida Belgrano and walk back up to Defensa.

Choose your own adventure #2: Buenos Aires Museo

📍 Defensa 187, San Telmo

walk tour buenos aires

If you’re skipping Puerto Madero, from Plaza de Mayo walk down Calle Defensa into San Telmo.

After walking less than one block, at Defensa 187, you’ll see the Buenos Aires Museo .

This is a new museum and very impressive.

Entrance is less than the equivalent of two dollars and you’ll learn all about the city’s history.

Don’t leave without visiting the roof top terrace.

It offers a beautiful view of the church across the street and murals were painted on neighboring facades to be enjoyed from the terrace.

walk tour buenos aires

Welcome to my favorite neighborhood in Buenos Aires, San Telmo.

On the corner at Chile and Defensa, you will see a line up of tourists and locals alike waiting to snap a picture on a bench with the statue of a little girl.

This is Mafalda , an iconic comic strip character in Argentina.

If you’re lucky and there’s no line, sit down for a quick selfie.

Continue half a block further down Defensa to Calle San Lorenzo, where you’ll see the Casa Minima.

This is the most narrow house in the city, bequeathed to a freed man.

San Telmo Lunch Options

By now you must have worked up quite an appetite.

We’ve covered a lot of ground.

Here are some of my favorite lunch options in the area.

  • La Brigada | Parrilla with a lot of futbol flair throughout, steaks are so tender the servers cut it with a spoon.
  • Desnivel | One of my favorite parrillas in town, it may feel a bit less nice than La Brigada with its fluorsecant lights and often grumpy waiters, but I’m a big fan. I love their juicy meat empanadas and lomo dishes (lomo a la mostaza, tenderloin in a creamy mustard sauce, is my favorite).
  • Mercado de San Telmo | In the market you’ll find some great lunch options for all tastes.
  • El Gauchito | My favorite empanadas in Buenos Aires, family recipes from the owner’s family in La Rioja. You can’t beat this hole in the wall. Snag one of the only 2 tables on the bsuy sidewalk or get your meal to go, take it to Plaza Dorrego to eat in the square while watching the tango dancers perform. Get a lot of napkins.

Plaza Dorrego

walk tour buenos aires

This is the main square in San Telmo.

You’ll see tango dancers perform for diners, sit and watch a bit.

Take photos and leave a tip.

If visiting on the weekend, you’ll see antique vendors here.

Saturday’s are calmer, with only antique vendors in the square. Sundays are a bit chaotic as San Telmo is taken over by the weekly market all along Defensa Street.

You’ll see a Starbucks on the corner, marking a newer shift in San Telmo as it gentrifies and “grows”.

Taxi to La Boca

From here, take a taxi or ride share app of choice to Caminito to see La Boca.

A colorful street corner and an outdoor market

📍 Avenida Pedro de Mendoza 1929, La Boca

If you’ve done any research into Buenos Aires, you’ll have seen this rainbow colored neighborhood on the cover of your guidebooks or throughout my blog.

It’s an iconic image of the city.

That’s because this is where the city received its immigrants at the turn of the 20th century, when massive waves of immigration made the city what you see today.

This port was the mouth of the city, giving it its name “La Boca.”

Walk around the colorful streets in the tourist area, but don’t wander too far off the beaten path.

Look in the colorful shops.

What they sell may be mainly tchotchkes but you’re here to see the building itself, not the tango magnets and postcards.

The shops here are housed in historic conventillos , tenement homes that housed multiple families (many in single rooms) during and after the yellow fever epidemic at the end of the 19th century.

Other things to see in La Boca?

Tour La Bombonera , the infamous Boca Juniors stadium.

TIP: If you want to see a football/soccer game while here, read my football in Buenos Aires guide.

See modern art in the PROA museum and get a coffee with a view from their roof top cafe.

And my favorite? Take a cheesy tango photo with the street performers for a fun souvenir.

The restaurants here are touristy and overpriced.

I’d avoid them for a meal but they can be fun if they have performers dancing tango.

If you want to enjoy that, grab a beer, wine, or coffee and enjoy the show before you call it a day.

Take a taxi back to your hotel to freshen up for dinner.

Dinner & The End of A Full Day in Buenos Aires

Days and nights are long here and you’ve done a lot with only 1 day in Buenos Aires.

Go for a late dinner at one of the city’s many parrillas for a great steak and Malbec.

Don Julio gets all the attention (and rightfully so) but it isn’t the only steakhouse in town, check out La Carniceria, Corte Comedor, Madre Rojas, Parrilla Peña, and La Brigada for alternatives.

Read my guide to steak in Buenos Aires to navigate the menu.

And whatever you do, don’t end the night without a dulce de leche heavy dessert, I recommend the flan mixto .

Join our La Boca Walking Tour to discover the most picturesque place in Buenos Aires! La Boca is the place where tango was born as a result of the bohemian and artistic culture of the immigrants. The houses where they lived now form a unique mix of colors that make La Boca one of the most attractive places in South America. We will start our tour learning about the history of the old industrial port of Buenos Aires visiting the cove of the Riachuelo, the little river that is today the south limit of the city.

Next, we will see the monument to Benito Quinquela Martín , the famous argentine popular artist that left body and soul to see his birthplace thrive and thanks to who La Boca is worldwide known for its vibrant colors.

We will walk the famous little street Caminito , full of the colorful collective houses of the working class immigrants in the Buenos Aires of the 1900s, who created a unique sense of identity that is fundamental part of the city culture. This is where Tango was born so we will show you why and how it started, and what is represents today to Argentina and to the world.

Our tour continues with visit to the square of the volunteer Fire Fighters , with beautiful artwork and murals that honor these heroes to the people of La Boca. Fileteado Art , a classic local way to decorate signs is also one of the things we will pay attention especially on our walk.
