5SOS Talking About One Direction Is All You Need To Hear Today

13 June 2019, 15:11 | Updated: 13 June 2019, 16:46

5SOS opened up about their time touring with One Direction

5SOS toured with One Direction in 2014 and the boys have just opened up about what it was like supporting the biggest boyband in the world.

5SOS accompanied One Direction on their 'Take Me Home', 'Where We Are' and 'On The Road Again' tours from 2013 to 2015, two years after first forming their group.

5SOS Returned To The Summertime Ball Stage For An Unforgettable Set

And as the Aussie lads, Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Ashton Irwin, and Michael Clifford, are at the peak of stardom they’ve finally shared what it was like to tour with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik , Liam Payne , Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson .

5 Seconds of Summer performed at Capital's Summertime Ball

Speaking to Apple Music’s Beats 1 Chart show host Brooke Reese, Ashton said working alongside 1D was “awesome”.

He said: “Something we found when we toured with One Direction a couple of years ago, was obviously we were younger guys in two bands, but we were a rock band. And putting that with a boy band at the time was an awesome, diverse tour."

The One Direction lads became good friends with 5SOS when Louis found their videos on YouTube and they went on to form a long-lasting bromance.

5SOS recently confessed they'd like to see the 1D lads reunite, but Luke pointed out: "not at the sake of their own happiness".

Last week 5SOS returned to the Summertime Ball stage and their set was definitely one to remember.

Luke Hemmings let everyone know he's got one of the best voices in the industry as Ashton, Calum and Michael smashed their way through a stadium set including brand new hit 'Easier', crowd favourites 'Youngblood' and 'She Looks So Perfect.'

They also took us back to 2014 with ‘Amnesia’, which had everyone feeling all kinds of emotional before ending on banger ‘Youngblood’ to close in epic fashion.

The boys had everyone in stitches backstage at the Summertime Ball after they were challenged by Capital Breakfast Show host Roman Kemp to swap phones and show each other’s camera rolls.

After Luke took Ashton’s phone and Calum took Michael’s, we knew we were going to see something pretty unique – both Luke and Calum flashed some pretty dodgy and hilarious selfies.

5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) fit the boy-band mould: four young men with a feverish female fan base touring with the British megastars One Direction. But the Australian pop-rock group identify more with Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy than Harry Styles.

“I [grew up] watching, you know, live rock ’n’ roll bands and I wanted to be like Tre Cool from Green Day,” says 5SOS’s drummer Ashton Irwin, 20. “To be called a boy band coming from those roots and writing our own songs and starting in the garage, I don’t think it’s the correct term for us.”

The group's first full-length, self-titled album debuted at No.1 on Billboard 200's albums chart this week after selling 259,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. 5SOS's debut single, She Looks So Perfect , became a Top 40 hit and the follow-up, Amnesia , has peaked at No 16.

Irwin says the “high-energy rock album” was inspired by guitar bands of the 1990s and early 2000s, including Blink-182 and Jimmy Eat World, as well as contemporary performers such as Imagine Dragons.

Despite that, One Direction have had some influence on 5SOS.

“We’ve become comfortable. I think we’re just really very used to having each other on the same tour,” says Irwin. “They’ve had us on their tour for two years now.”

The Canadian and United States leg of One Direction’s Where We Are stadium tour kicked off on August 1 in Toronto, where 5SOS opened.

“The way they treat their crew and stuff like that, it’s a real family-type environment and really we look up to that,” Irwin says.

The rising band are also performing for larger audiences: 5SOS announced this week they would headline an arena tour next year.

Despite their early success, social-media stardom and devoted fan following, the band – who include the vocalist Luke Hemmings, the guitarist Michael Clifford and the bassist Calum Hood – are taking their new-found fame in their stride.

“I don’t see us as having any fame factor,” said Hemmings. “We’re just dudes in a band who play some stuff.”

They also co-write most of their music that, like the break-up song Amnesia , focuses on love and heartache.

“It feels nice to write about girls because it gets it off your chest,” said Clifford. “It’s good.”

But there’s no time for love.

“[We’re)] married to the band, we always say,” says Hood.

Luke, Callum, Michael, Ashton: If you don't know these four names, you better study up. The foursome, better known as 5SOS to their fans, have been the talk of the town since hitting #1 on iTunes in almost 40 countries with their debut single "She Looks So Perfect," and that was just for pre-orders—not a single note of the song had been heard. Then they sold out their entire North American tour in just five minutes, and last week, their 4-song EP debuted at #2 on The Billboard 200. Not too shabby for four teenagers, right? Yup, that's right—they're all under 20.

At first glance, these guys might have that boy band look down to perfection, but don't let the impressively coiffed hair and coincidentally coordinated outfits fool you. Their sound proves these four Australians aren't looking to be the next pop sensation: They play their own instruments, co-write their songs, and count rock bands like Green Day and Blink 182 among their biggest influences. Luke Hemmings, the group's frontman and, at 17 years old, the youngest member, says he also grew up listening to a lot of Good Charlotte. "They were the first band I obsessed over. First album and first concert. They were big," he says. "Those American '90s bands shaped us."

Following their 10-city run, 5SOS will be opening for One Direction for the second time on their Where We Are tour this summer. Luke admits being on the road with 1D the first time around in 2013 was a great lesson for them. "Their work ethic, like how hard they work and how well they treat their team, was just incredible," he says. "I think it's really important to have a good team around you. They're the ones that are going to make you go the whole way so you gotta treat them really well."

The fans, it goes without saying, are pretty important, too. "The fans are just incredible. They're so dedicated to us," says Luke. "We can never really repay them for what they do for us but we do everything we can." In other words, you can expect double the number of screaming fans you would normally find at a 1D concert.

With about 9 million total Twitter followers and over 40 million YouTube views, it's safe to say 5SOS knows a thing or two about giving the people what they want. "We never tried to be anything we weren't," explains Luke. "We just put up stuff that was real and I think people like real people, and fans really respond when you respond to them."

So what do we have in store for us on their upcoming headline tour in the good 'ol U.S. of A? "It's very much a rock show when you see us live, and very high energy. It's a party vibe we're going for." Just don't expect any musical jitters—these guys may be new to the charts, but they're already total pros when it comes to performing. "We feel quite comfortable on stage," Luke says. "That's our happy place."

Australian band 5 Seconds Of Summer on touring with One Direction

IT was the break of a lifetime when four teen musicians were invited by 1D on their world tour. 5 Seconds of Summer reveal what they learned.

ALWAYS be sweet to your fans when they mob you, swap hotels for a tour bus whenever possible and do not play football against the world's biggest boy band.

These are the life lessons Australian band 5 Seconds Of Summer take away after spending nine months on the road with One Direction .

After 110 shows throughout Europe, America and Australia, the four teenagers from Sydney's western suburbs have amassed an enviable fanbase.

Each member now has more than one million Twitter followers, a massive 3454 per cent increase since the beginning of the year when it was revealed they would join 1D on their world tour.

In just two years since forming at high school, Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Ashton Irwin and Michael Clifford have gone from playing to 20 people in a pub to opening for 1D in front of 20,000 people at London's O2 Arena in February.

"Before that first London show, we had only played 16 gigs," drummer Irwin said.

"We had to rise to the occasion and now we've had the chance to become a band who can feel comfortable playing in front of anyone.

"We are far from it but we really want to be the best live bands in the world."

One family ... 5 SOS and 1D became a band of brothers during the nine month world tour. Picture Supplied.

The 5SOS boys served a fast-track apprenticeship to pop stardom while on the road with 1D.

They were assigned a security guard for the American leg of the Take Me Home tour as their own fanbase swelled and any attempt to play tourist immediately attracted hundreds of excited girls.

On one of the rare occasions they were staying in a hotel rather than the tour bus, a brief shopping expedition in Nashville was cut short when hundreds of girls discovered the Australian musicians were out and about.

Irwin said the Australian musicians said they took their cues from 1D on how to behave in the eye of the fan frenzy.

Becoming worshipped ... 5 SOS mobbed while shopping in Nashville. Picture: Supplied

They also mirrored the British pop stars in how they communicated with the millions of fans on social media, keeping the conversation nice, positive and appreciative.

No doubt their mothers are proud their boys are treating the ladies with respect - even when called on to sign their breasts.

"We're nowhere near how big they are and we still got the same sort of attention and it can be quite stressful when you're not used to it. It has been crazy at times," he said.

"It is impressive to see how 1D handle themselves in the public eye, how they deal with any problems and just how smart they are about everything."

Pranks helped distract them when they were homesick or had a few spare hours.

The 5SOS bandmates dressed in superhero costumes and cruised around Los Angeles staging guerilla photo shoots until police shut down those antics.

And they punked 1D during the final concert in Melbourne, switching places with their band to play Teenage Dirtbag.

1D's band members then returned to the stage armed with cream pies for the pop stars.

"We are all good mates, really good mates, they are very supportive of us. And the whole cream pie thing was great fun," Irwin says.

Hemmings said 5SOS, who play their own instruments, may have the upper hand against the British boy band as musicians but they will never beat them at football.

"We played a few games against them and lost all of them. We gave up in the end. It's not fair, they're English," the singer said.

5SOS have now returned to London to continue work on their debut album after quietly signing a deal with Capitol Records earlier this year.

On the Road Again Tour

The On The Road Again Tour (also referred to as OTRA or OTRAT ) is One Direction 's fourth headlining tour. It was announced on May 19, 2014 and began on February 7, 2015. It concluded on October 31, 2015.

In April 2015, Billboard [1] announced the OTRA Tour was the top grossing Hot Tour after the completion of the first leg. During that leg, the tour garnered $62 million in ticket sales. In July 2015, Billboard announced in their Midyear Touring Report that OTRA was again the top grossing tour of 2015, bringing in $81 million dollars, around $40 million more than runners-up The Foo Fighters. [2] In October 2015, Billboard reported OTRA's North American leg had earned the band $80.6 million, bringing the entire tour's total earnings to $188 million. [3] In January 2016, Pollstarpro.com announced it was the top earning tour of 2015 with $210.2 million earned and 2,364,390 tickets sold. [4]

It was Zayn Malik 's final tour with the band, he exited the group in March, shortly before the first leg was completed.

A following 6 Canadian dates were added. Due to the high demand for tickets, numerous extra shows were added.

Announcements [ ]

A video was released on May 10, 2014 from the boys, announcing that they'd be playing in the Philippines for one show in Manila on March 21, 2015 [6] .

Another video was released on May 18, 2014 where the boys announced they would be performing live in South Africa for the "very first time next year" on March 28th, 29th and April 1, 2015 in 2 different stadiums [7] .

The tweet [16] at 4pm revealed that they had released European and USA dates to the previously announced dates. On October 24th they released another set of dates for Canada [17] .

Developments [ ]

The tour setup did not significantly change after Zayn 's departure in March. In the week before his official exit from the group, after being signed off for stress, the band left a space for him in many of their group set-ups, most notably in their formation during Harry's solo for " What Makes You Beautiful ". During one performance, Liam placed his hand in the space where Zayn would usually be standing. After Malik's official exit, the group changed the formation several times, standing arm in arm for one performance, and back to back for another.

In the shows immediately after Zayn's departure, fans began bringing signs saying "Til The End" to shows, for the group to see. Liam acknowledged the signs during the Dubai April 4 show saying "Til the end, everybody. We are One Direction and we are here to stay". [18]

On May 28, 2015, Niall confirmed on Twitter that the setlist had been changed for the European and North American legs, in order to feature more songs from Four . [19]

On June 1, 2015, it was announced that the OTRA Tour would be presented in the USA by the Honda Civic Tour [20] and that Swedish duo Icona Pop would be the support act.

On June 13, " No Control " and " 18 " were officially added to the setlist. On July 9, " Spaces " and " Act My Age " were officially added to the setlist, while " Strong " was removed. On July 15, "Spaces" was removed from the setlist.

On July 21, " Fireproof " was officially added to the setlist.  The concert was marred slightly by claims from online fans that the crowd appeared not lively enough. Liam tweeted "TBH (to be honest), I think every crowd we sing to is the loudest...I thought that was a good thing that worldwide you're the best fans?  Don't you? Never mind, thanks Edmonton, you were aces" in response to a meme referencing the claims.

On July 27 Honda Civic uploaded the first part of a tour diary video to One Direction's official YouTube page. On September 4, part 2 was uploaded. On October 8, part 3 was uploaded.

On July 31st less than 24 hours after its official release, " Drag Me Down " was officially added to the setlist. The band thanked fans for the overwhelming success the single garnered.

From the beginning of the UK leg, the setlist order was completely changed and " Infinity " was partially performed acoustically on September 24, after the band encountered technical difficulties during " Night Changes ". Ed Sheeran's protege Jamie Lawson and American rock band Augustana were support acts.

On October 16, " Perfect " was officially added to the setlist, replacing " Diana ".

On October 20, the Belfast concert was cancelled after Liam became too ill to perform. The cancellation was made at the last minute, after the support act had finished performing. Harry, Louis and Niall all tweeted shortly afterward, apologizing.

During the final concert in Sheffield, the band played " Act My Age " several times in a row while their family and staff danced in the front row. Liam 's dad led a conga line through the crowd. As the show was ending, Harry and Louis hugged, marking their first public or on stage interaction in years.

The performance included reimagined versions of songs from their 11-year catalog including brand-new songs from their critically acclaimed fifth studio album  5SOS5 , accompanied by a 12-piece string orchestra and a 12-member gospel choir.

“’The Feeling of Falling Upwards’ is simply supposed to describe to you the feeling that we have experienced together, the feeling of taking a leap of faith on such a fickle thing like music,”  expressed vocalist and drummer Ashton Irwin on stage at Royal Albert Hall,  “And sharing this experience together year after year, season after season of our lives.”
