Taking a Cruise around Iceland: A Comprehensive Guide

In the last 5 years or so, lots of cruise companies have started offering Iceland circumnavigation cruises. These are cruises that start and end in Reykjavik, and stop in many ports around Iceland along the way. In 2022 and 2023, you have Iceland cruise options from Iceland ProCruises, Hurtigruten, Viking, Windstar, and Crystal Cruises. Norwegian Cruises offers an Iceland and Greenland cruise, and may offer an Iceland only cruise soon.

Should you take a cruise around Iceland? If so, which company is the best? Which excursions should you choose? We can help with everything you need to plan an amazing Iceland cruise vacation!

Also be sure to check out our new Facebook group all about Iceland Cruises !

Small ship cruising around Iceland

I’m a big fan of a single-country cruise. Of course, our web site is all about Iceland, so we’re biased. Still, you can’t help but find a deep appreciation for Icelandic culture when you spend a week there. You don’t get that if you wake up in a new country every other day.

Cruise ships that go around Iceland are small; you won’t find any of the typical enormous cruise ships stopping in these smaller Icelandic towns. Fewer passengers is one of the reasons these cruises are expensive; often significantly more expensive than planning a trip around Iceland yourself. But they take away almost all of the stress of planning your trip. Food, lodging, and transportation are all taken care of. And activities are too, since you’ll likely pay to add excursions!

Let’s look at the pros and cons of each of the companies that offers Iceland cruises.

Iceland ProCruises in Iceland

Iceland ProCruises Ocean Diamond, from IcelandStepByStep.com

In 2021, we took a trip with Iceland ProCruises ( IcelandProCruises.com ), and recommend it. One of the co-owners is Icelandic, and most of the excursion team is too. Their ship only holds a maximum of 210 passengers. This is definitely a unique way to see some more remote parts of Iceland! Here’s a typical itinerary for an Iceland ProCruises cruise:

windstar cruises iceland 2023

Pros of an Iceland ProCruises cruise

  • Co-owned by a local Icelander. Most of the staff is Icelandic, and so you get to spend a lot of time hanging out with Icelanders
  • The smallest ship option. Ocean Diamond holds a maximum of 210 passengers.
  • The least expensive option by a good margin. The price for a group or family of 3 is absolutely unbeatable.
  • Excursions are clearly shown on the web site, and premium excursion prices are reasonable.

windstar cruises iceland 2023

Cons of an Iceland ProCruises cruise

  • The small ship doesn’t have many amenities. There’s a small spa and one restaurant. The hot tub hasn’t worked on recent cruises
  • Focuses on Iceland. All of their cruises visit only Iceland, or Iceland and Greenland
  • No free excursion options. (But Iceland Step By Step can customize city walking yours for you, for free!)
  • The ship doesn’t stop on the south coast, so you miss some parts of Iceland. You can cover this with a land tour before or after, though.

Hurtigruten cruises in Iceland

windstar cruises iceland 2023

Hurtigruten is a UK based company that has been offering cruises since 1893. The tend to offer cruises to more remote areas: Iceland and Greenland, but also The Galápagos Islands and Antarctica. Hurtigruten offers scientific exploration as well as tourism. The circumnavigation map is similar to Iceland ProCrusies, though they stop at different ports in the Westfjords and in North and East Iceland.

windstar cruises iceland 2023

There are 2 different ships doing Iceland circumnavigations in 2022: Fram and Nansen. Fram holds 250 passengers, and Nansen holds 528. Nansen is much bigger, but also much newer: It was built in 2020! Fram was built in 2007, but is expected to be refurbished in early 2022. So if you join Hurtigruten for an Iceland circumnavigation cruise in 2022, you’re getting a new ship. Nansen is the brand new ship that you’ll be on on the June 2022 Iceland cruises. it’s a beautiful ship:

windstar cruises iceland 2023

Pros of a Hurtigruten Iceland cruise

  • Brand new or refurbished ship
  • Children as young as 6 welcome (but the cruise is wonderful for adults too!) 50% discount for kids,
  • Opportunities for citizen science
  • Many excisions are included for free (Mostly walking tours.)

Cons of a Hurtigruten Iceland cruise

  • No Icelanders on the expedition team. (You won’t fund any outside of Iceland ProCruises, though!)
  • Significantly more expensive than the cheapest options with Iceland ProCruises
  • Only a few date choices for Iceland Circumnavigation per summer

Viking Cruises in Iceland

Viking is the big player in Iceland circumnavigation cruises. They have a cruise leaving Reykjavik every week throughout the summer. The Viking Star will spend its entire summer going round and round Iceland. While Viking claims this ships holds “only” 930 passengers, that’s the largest ship offered for a circumnavigation Iceland cruise!

windstar cruises iceland 2023

But that larger ship gives you access to many more amenities. You’ll find 2 pools, a premium Nordic spa, a sports deck, and several lounges. The Star won’t match the amenities on larger ships; there’s no casino here. Still, you’ll find the most offerings on this ship for an Iceland circumnavigation cruise.

windstar cruises iceland 2023

The itinerary is similar to the others, though with fewer port stops; the cruises are a day or 2 shorter, since the ship is back in Reykjavik every week.

windstar cruises iceland 2023

Pros of a Viking Iceland cruise

  • The most amenities of any ship here
  • Frequent departures mean you can book a cruise that fits your schedule
  • Inexpensive relative to most of the options here. Frequent promotions can make Viking about as cheap as Iceland ProCruises for double occupancy.
  • Free walking tour excursions at all ports.

Cons of a Viking Iceland cruise

  • The larger ship may not always be able to dock on land (at the Westman Islands, for example.) A zodiac boat will ferry you to shore.
  • No one under 18 is allowed (though you may see this as a good thing!)
  • Excursion options are all listed on the web site, but prices are not shown

Windstar Cruises in Iceland

Windstar’s cruise is similar to Viking; trips leaves most weeks from Reykjavik, which means it’s a slightly shorter trip with fewer stops. You’re onboard the Star Pride, which was renovated in 2021 to have all suite rooms.

windstar cruises iceland 2023

The Star Pride holds 312 passengers, but you still get many of the amenities of the larger Viking ship: an infinity pool, a spa, several restaurants, and ample lounge space.

windstar cruises iceland 2023

The Windstar cruise also only makes 5 stops, just like Viking. Hurtigruten makes 6, and Iceland ProCruises makes 8.

windstar cruises iceland 2023

Pros of a Windstar Iceland cruise

  • Brand new all suite layout. There are many different types of rooms, but all feature a separate living area.
  • Includes a zodiac boat tour of Surtsey, a protected island that emerged from the ocean in the 1960s.
  • A good amount of amenities for a smaller ship.

Cons of a Windstar Iceland cruise

  • No free shore excursions.
  • Many excursions seem very expensive (whale watching in Akureyri, for example.)
  • (Optional) outside dining on Star Pride might not be enjoyable on cold Icelandic evenings

Crystal Cruises in Iceland (well, reborn in 2023! )

Crystal Cruises’ Expedition Iceland is the longest cruise you’ll find here: 10 nights. It’s also the most expensive, and far and away the most luxurious. You will have 24-hour access to a butler! The ship is the brand new Crystal Endeavor, and it only holds 200 passengers. But there’s a casino, a 2-story solarium, and so much more.

windstar cruises iceland 2023

The long duration of the cruise lets you get to some places the other ships skip.

windstar cruises iceland 2023

Many of those stops in North Iceland would take you hours of driving to see; no other cruise is going to get you to the stunning Látrabjarg bird cliffs. But this cruise doesn’t come cheap; the cheapest price is more than twice the cost of any other cruise. But what a cruise it is.

windstar cruises iceland 2023

Pros of a Crystal Cruises Iceland cruise

  • Free warm clothing. A good selection of free and paid excursions
  • Luxury like no other Iceland cruise: A butler and Michelin-inspired dining
  • The longest option with access to surprising area up north

Cons of a Crystal Cruises Iceland cruise

  • Very expensive. Several times the price of cheaper options on other ships
  • That’s really it. If you can afford it, this is an amazing cruise on an amazing ship.

Aurora Expeditions Iceland Cruises

Aurora gives you just one Iceland circumnavigation cruise per year, at least in 2022. You only choice is August 1-11. If that works for your schedule, this is an option worth considering. This is the smallest ship here, at least by length: The Greg Mortimer (yes, that’s the name of the ship!) holds just 126 passengers, and is just 343 feet long.

windstar cruises iceland 2023

The small ship allows you to get to one port that no other ship here stops at: Höfn. Höfn is on the South coast of Iceland, and is very close to famous glacier lagoons in that part of the country. If you want to see those lagoons on other cruises, you may find yourself on a 2-hour bus journey from a very different port.

windstar cruises iceland 2023

Pros of Aurora Expeditions Iceland Cruises

  • A smaller ship gets you better access to the south coast of Iceland
  • basic excursions are included in the price

Cons of Aurora Expeditions Iceland Cruises

  • The smaller ship means higher prices, though not as high as Crystal Cruises
  • Only one cruise per year around Iceland

National Geographic Iceland Cruises

National Geographic partners with Lindblad Expeditions to operate 3 cruises around Iceland every summer. You’ll be on either the National Geographic Explorer, which holds 148 passengers, or the National Geographic Resolution, which holds 126 passengers.

windstar cruises iceland 2023

These cruises are all-inclusive. You can add on land days before or after the cruise, but on the cruise itself, everything is included. All excursions are induced in the price, including a clever land portion up North. You aren’t even expected to tip!

windstar cruises iceland 2023

Note the red “Motor Route” on the map above. You get off the ship at Akureyri, and then explore the Diamond Circle and Mývatn areas up North. Then the ship meets you up in Húsavík to continue the cruise.

Pros of a National Geographic Iceland Cruise

  • All inclusive. Everyone does the same thing at the same time.
  • Small boats, with under 150 passengers
  • Clever bus portion of the trip up North to see more interior areas without backtracking.
  • A walking tour and meals are included on your arrival day in Reykjavik before boarding the ship.

Cons of a National Geographic Iceland Cruise

  • Expensive. The only more expensive option in Crystal Cruises. The all-inclusiveness does make the cost less extreme, though.
  • The National Geographic Explorer ship is older, and lacks some amenities like a pool. But you’re probably not in Iceland for the pool!

Which Iceland circumnavigation cruise to choose?

Every single one of these cruises will be an amazing Iceland experience. They all have well-thought out itineraries and will lead to an unforgettable adventure.

With that said, we’re partial to Iceland ProCruises. This is the least expensive option, for one of the longer trips. Many of the expedition members are Icelandic, which to me is a big perk. You won’t find many amenities on the ship, so look elsewhere if a pool and expansive spa are what you’re looking for.

Hurtigruten is another good choice, with the option of a brand new ship and some unique science-based opportunities.

Viking is another great choice, with weekly departures and larger ships with more amenities.

But seriously, these are all fantastic options. Contact us if you’d like help planning your trip! We often have discounts or bonuses we can provide you as a travel agent for your Iceland vacation. And we can create custom pre- and post- cruise touring options you won’t get anywhere else.

We have been to the south side. I really want to do the full circle! I’m mulling whether to really consider taking a daughter and two granddaughters who will be 14 and 12, great travelers and truly good kids. Is there a trip you would recommend and that also touches Greenland? Thank you in advance

October 31, 2023 at 2:14 pm

Hi Lorna! You have a few options for cruises that visit Iceland and Greenland. Norwegian is your cheapest option, with a 10 day cruise. But it’s on a very large ship, and it on;y makes 3 stops in Iceland before heading to Greenland.

Iceland ProCrusies offers a combo package of 2 cruises. First you circumnavigate Iceland, and then once you’re back in Reykjavik, the same ship leaves for Greenland.

Hurtigruten also offers a longer cruise that visits both Iceland and Greenland.

A Windstar Iceland Cruise: Adventures in the Land of Fire and Ice

Little Souls

11:08:19 August 21, 2024

My recent adventure with Windstar Cruises in Iceland was wonderful. My 13-year-old son, Carter, and I spent our days sailing around the land of fire and ice, exploring its wild landscapes, and immersing ourselves in its rich culture—all while enjoying the comfort of an intimate yacht that felt more like a retreat than a typical cruise ship. I’m excited to share our journey with you.

Why Windstar? A Unique Cruise Experience

Windstar Cruises offers something different from your typical cruise line. While many cruise ships are large and packed with thousands of passengers, Windstar’s fleet consists of small, yacht-like vessels that carry no more than 342 guests. This means no crowds, no long lines, and no competition for deck chairs—although, in Iceland’s cooler climate, those chairs weren’t in high demand! Instead, what I found was a relaxed, intimate atmosphere where the crew knew my name, and fellow travelers quickly became friends.

What really sets Windstar apart is its commitment to providing immersive, authentic travel experiences. Windstar doesn’t just take you to a destination—they help you connect with it. On our Iceland cruise, this meant more than just scenic views. We stepped ashore to explore volcanic landscapes, quaint fishing villages, and vibrant Icelandic culture in a way that felt deeply personal.

This focus on authenticity truly resonates with me. I believe travel should be about more than just checking off destinations; it should be about making connections with the places you visit and creating memories that last a lifetime.

A Comprehensive Journey Through Iceland

Our 7-day journey began and ended in Reykjavík, Iceland’s vibrant capital. During the cruise, we circled the island, visiting some of its most iconic and remote locations. The itinerary was a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural immersion.

  • Reykjavík: The city is a delightful mix of modernity and tradition, with its colorful houses, thriving arts scene, and geothermal pools. Carter and I visited the Blue Lagoon immediately after arrival—one of the natural wonders of the world. The warm, ~100-degree water was incredibly relaxing. Back in town, we discovered BakaBaka , where we enjoyed hot chocolate and croissants so much that we returned the next day.
  • Heimaey Island: This is the largest of the Westman Islands, located off Iceland’s southern coast. Known for its dramatic volcanic landscapes and vibrant birdlife, including puffin colonies, Heimaey was a highlight. We hiked past waterfalls and puffin nests and explored a museum dedicated to the 1973 eruption of Eldfell, which reshaped the town and created new land. This made it a fascinating destination for both nature lovers and history buffs.
  • Seydisfjordur: The approach to Seydisfjordur by sea was breathtaking, with our ship sailing through a narrow, deep fjord flanked by steep mountains. The town, surrounded by lush green hills and cascading waterfalls, is perfect for nature lovers. We admired the colorful, well-preserved wooden buildings from the 19th century and had the chance to attend a concert at the iconic Blue Church. Although Carter and I opted out, I later regretted it when other guests shared how fun and engaging it was (and only an hour long!)
  • Akureyri and Lake Mývatn: In the north, we visited Akureyri, Iceland’s second-largest city, and the stunning Lake Mývatn area. We went river rafting, fully geared up in wetsuits, gloves, and booties. Carter joined others in jumping from a (not too high) cliff, and we both enjoyed hot chocolate made by scooping hot water directly from a bubbling thermal pot and stirring in hot cocoa mix.
  • Grundarfjordur: Our last stop was on the northern coast of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, home to Kirkjufell—one of Iceland’s most iconic and photographed mountains, shaped like a church. Carter and I ventured out to Vatnshellir, a lava tube cave formed by a volcanic eruption. The cave was suitably dark, spooky, chilly, and drippy—a quick 45-minute experience before we zipped back to the warm ship for an afternoon snack.

Onboard Luxury with a Personal Touch

Life aboard a Windstar yacht is upscale, yet relaxed. The ship’s design is sleek and modern, with plenty of spaces to unwind and enjoy the passing scenery. Dining was a particular highlight, with menus inspired by the regions we visited and ingredients sourced locally whenever possible.

Who Should Sail with Windstar?

Windstar Cruises is perfect for travelers who value authenticity, intimacy, and a deeper connection with the destinations they visit. It’s ideal for couples, solo travelers, or anyone looking to experience the world in a way that’s both luxurious and meaningful. While kids over 8 are welcome, there is no specific programming for children, and there aren’t many other kids onboard.

Ready to Sail?

Windstar offers amazing itineraries to Iceland, Tahiti, the Mediterranean, Costa Rica, Canada, New England, and more. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out, and let’s see if Windstar is the right choice for your next vacation!

Reykjavik cruise port

Region Iceland - Greenland - Faroe Islands

Local Time 2024-09-19 18:39

Port Reykjavik cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Reykjavik, Iceland. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Reykjavik is Iceland's main seaport, also the country's capital city and center of the cod-fishing industry. The city has population around 124,000.

Reykjavik Harbour (port locode ISREY) is also Iceland's principal "cruise port" and is visited on both transition itineraries and as part of turnaround/roundtrip voyages serving as homeport.

In 2023, the cruise port had scheduled a total of 265 ship calls with estimated ~285,000 passengers (of whom ~90,000 turnaround). This represented a 31% increase over 2022 when were handled 184 ship calls and a total of 170,770 cruisers. The significant growth was predominantly from turnaround operations/roundtrip itineraries leaving from and ending in Reykjavik. In October 2023, the Port announced plans for building a new cruise terminal (at Sundahofn), with construction works slated to start in 2023-Q3.

In 874 the Vikings established the first permanent settlement in Reykjavik. The community was chartered in 1786, and in 1843 became the seat of parliament. Reykjavik became Iceland's capital in 1918, as well as the world's northernmost metropolis. the city is on Faxa Bay, surrounded by mountains and provides easy access to fishing and skiing.

Reykjavik claims that it's "the cleanest city on earth". It has 50+ art galleries and museums, as well as 2 theatre companies and a symphony orchestra. The city's landmarks include Althing (parliament building) and Hallgrímskirkja (Hallgrímur Church/Lutheran cathedral, 1945-opened modern building).

From Reykjavik are offered bus tours to the National Park on the shores of Iceland's largest lake (Pingvallavatn), with wildflowers and abundant birdlife. Here too is the "Golden Falls", Gullfoss, a double cascade in Hvita River, measuring 105-ft / 15-m high and dropping in 2 stages into a mile-long gorge. Nearby is regularly spouting Geysir, a thermal spring from which all hot springs have taken their name.

Other popular bus travel tour destinations from Reykjavik include:

  • Borgarnes (Borgarfjordur/56 mi / 90 km away), often with hotel overnight, attractions like Barnafoss and Hraunfossar Waterfalls (short strong rapids), Deildartunguhver Hot Spring, Langjokull Glacier's Ice Tunnels (accessed via modified trucks).
  • Thingvellir National Park (UNESCO site), Geysir Hot Springs (the Strokkur geyser spouting every 5 min hot water up to 20 m / 60 ft into the air), Hotel Geysir (lunch included), Gullfoss Waterfall), Fludir Village (Secret Lagoon hot springs), Stokkseyri Village (dinner included), back to Reykjavik for an overnight hotel.
  • Asborgir on the Golden Circle route (300 km / 186 mi), Kirkjubaejarklaustur Village (walking along Fjadrargljufur Canyon, visiting the Eldhraun lava field, hotel overnight), Vik i Myrdal (Iceland's southernmost village on Vik Island).
  • Excursions are also organized to Reykjanes Peninsula visiting the Krísuvík Volcano and the Blue Lagoon (geothermal spa near Grindavík, with a scenic view of Mt Þorbjörn).

Reykjavík Airport (Iceland's second-largest - after Keflavík Airport) is inside the city and south of downtown. It serves mainly domestic flights, asl well as flights to Greenland and Faroe Islands. Reykjavík Airport was built during WW2 (1939-45) by the British occupation force on the outskirts of the then smaller city. Since 1962, there's been controversy regarding the airport's location, since it takes up valuable space in the city's central part.

Reykjavík has 2 seaports. The old harbor (close to downtown) is used mainly by cruise ships and fishing boats. Sundahofn (in the eastern part) is Iceland's biggest cargo port. The country has no public railways as it is sparsely populated. However, the locomotives that were used to build the docks are still on display.

For season 2017, the cruise port had scheduled a total of 155 ship calls with around 130,000 passengers. During season 2016, the port was visited 113 times and by around 100,000 cruise passengers.

Reykjavik cruise terminal

Large cruise ships and ferries dock at Sundahofn Harbour. The facility has a 650-m/2130-ft long quay/dock and can handle vessels with max draft of 12 m/39 ft. The quay length allows berthing for two large cruise liners simultaneously.

In October 2023, Faxaports (Reykjavik Port's management company) announced plans for building a new cruise terminal (at Sundahofn). Construction works are planned to start in 2023-Q3 and to be finished in 2025. The facility is expected to be fully operational in 2026-Q1.

The new cruise terminal will be sized 5000 m2 / 53820 ft2 with a building spanning two floors. The terminal's design was envisioned to make the building a city landmark, offering scenic views of Faxa Bay.

The core design incorporates a black box concept, with a multifunctional indoor space suitable for turnaround (roundtrip cruise) operations that require handling both arrivals and departures simultaneously. A central glass structure will allow natural light into the building.

During no-ship days, the new terminal will double as an event space (venue for meetings, conferences, incentives, exhibitions, concerts, etc).

Faxaports' investment in this project was IKr2.8 billion (~EUR 24.3 million).

The terminal's location (in Sundahofn) is convenient as the harbor is just ~3 km / 2 mi from downtown.

Currently, Reykjavik Harbour's turnaround/homeport operations are managed from a small building and tents positioned at a 619-m/2030-ft-long quay.

The new terminal will be fitted with shore power infrastructure (EUR 20.7 million project) based on two high-voltage plug connections.

On September 19, 2023, was officially inaugurated one low-voltage shore power supply station (1.5 MVA) serving smaller-sized ships at the Old Harbour. The facility was first used by HX/Hurtigruten Expeditions ' ship MS Maud .

Long before Columbus, Vikings crossed the Labrador Sea from Greenland to settle in L’Anse Aux Meadows. Centuries later, Portuguese fishermen, Basque whalers, French trappers, and English pilgrims would follow and discover a Promised Land where nature nurtures both body and soul. Here, where the sun first kisses North America, explorer Jacques Cartier found a place where “the scenery is indeed worth seeing and can’t be properly described in words.” The ravishing lighthouse-studded coast still inspires awe. Manna from the sea still delights palates. And small cruise ships like ours still ply these waters with a freedom denied to larger cruise ships.

Natural beauty is rampant in the Canary Islands, with a diversity that is astounding. Martian landscapes on Lanzarote. Lush green La Palma. Cloud forest, cliffs and canyons on La Gomera. Tenerife with its spectacular beaches and soaring Mount Teidi. Then there are the skies, piercing blue by day and some of the world’s darkest and most stargazer-friendly at night. Plus, a climate that’s earned these islands a reputation as the Land of Eternal Spring, with temperatures averaging 64° to 77° F year-round. And that’s just the backdrop. On stage you’ll find a culture that blends Spanish and African into a fusion of flavorful and colorful cuisines and customs, and activities for everyone: history lovers, art lovers, beach lovers, nature lovers, and wine lovers who will swoon over the islands’ famously improbable wines.

IF YOU COULD DESIGN THE PERFECT ISLAND itinerary it would look a lot like these. Ports of call would include tiny towns and hidden harbors known only to private yachts and small ships like ours. Schedules would allow for dropping the Watersports Platform in turquoise bays and raising sails on the way to your next island rendezvous. And the laid-back island vibe would continue on board with a mouthwatering Signature Onboard Barbecue by the pool. Best of all, on every cruise there would be one day that was even more special than the rest, when you land on a secluded beach for Windstar’s Signature Beach Party, elaborate buffet and watersports included.

Simultaneously young and old, hot and cold, Iceland is a mass of contradictions. Nestled near the Arctic Circle yet warmed by the Gulf Stream, its ports never freeze, yet glaciers drape majestically over volcanos, valleys, fjords, and shorelines. And water – liquid water – is everywhere, falling, bubbling, steaming, spouting, and fueling the country’s 100% renewable energy grid. Come name one of the many unnamed waterfalls that thunder off cliffs. (Perhaps Thorskeggfoss, Thor’s Beard?) Join the nation’s passionate ice cream lovers for a licorice-and-chocolate cone. And be inspired by a nation of avid readers who believe you really can have it all.

For Dreamy Vacations and Plant-Based Fine Dining, All Aboard Windstar’s Luxury Yacht Cruises

Is it time you take a new type of cruise if you love cruises but not crowds—and top-quality food but not buffet lines—you might want to consider a smaller cruise company like windstar cruises. .

by Charlotte Pointing

September 16, 2024

Imagine just for one moment that you’re not busy with work, school, or household chores. You’re not stressed. You’re not tired. In fact, the only thing you have to worry about is when you have to leave the white sands of Bora Bora or Tahiti to head back to your yacht for a delicious plant-based meal crafted by some of the world’s best chefs. It may feel like a faraway dream, but it’s very much a possibility.

In February 2025, Windstar Cruises is launching Dreams of Tahiti, its inaugural plant-based cruise to French Polynesia. The voyage will take place on Star Breeze, a newly renovated all-suite motor yacht with room for 312 guests, meaning it’s small enough to fit into the tiny island ports of Polynesian destinations like Raiatea and Motu Mahaea, but big enough for a spa, pool, and some seriously impressive dining venues—all of which serve delicious, totally plant-based food crafted by globally renowned chefs (fun fact: Windstar is the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation).

If you want to get a spot, you’ll have to move fast, because the voyage is almost sold out. According to Jessica Chiang, Windstar’s director of marketing, the all-vegan sailing trip was launched in response to rising demand from passengers.

It’s true that plant-based diets are growing in popularity in the US. One study published earlier this year in the journal Nutrients noted that from 2012 to 2022, the percentage of Americans following a plant-forward diet more than doubled from 12 percent to 26 percent. Documentaries that demonstrate the health benefits of a plant-based lifestyle—such as  Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones and You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment— have also been popular with Netflix viewers in recent years.

This demand has spilled over into the cruising industry, which is more popular than ever ( research suggests that by the end of this year, 36 million passengers will have taken to the high seas on a cruise ship). In 2023, Carnival Cruises announced it launched a brand-new vegan menu on all of its ships. And in the same year, Princess Cruises and Virgin Atlantic launched new plant-based options aboard their cruise liners as well.

But if you’ve been curious about trying plant-based food on vacation, there is arguably no better opportunity than Windstar’s intimate Dreams of Tahiti voyage.

Windstar: a more intimate, more refined cruising experience

The average cruise ship can hold around 3,000 passengers at any one time. That means that if you’re heading off on a cruise during the height of the season, you’ll be tussling for a good seat on deck, lining up to get off the ship to see all of the wonders at your port destination, and battling for the last few vegan options at the buffet.

The world’s biggest ships are basically floating resorts, which is great for some, but not so appealing to those looking for a more refined and tranquil vacation experience with plenty of space and opportunity to try new experiences, including food.

“Because we only serve up to 350 guests, we can source the produce locally with the freshest ingredients from trusted purveyors we work with frequently. We try to localize as much as possible.” —Jessica Chiang

This means that your meals will be packed with flavor, of course, but also that they’re better for the planet—sourcing food locally from port stops along the journey reduces any extra emissions from shipping it in from external food service providers.

Research shows that intimate vessels like those from Windstar Cruises have a significantly smaller environmental impact than larger cruise ships. According to Marine Insight , a 3,000-capacity cruise ship can generate around 150,000 gallons of sewage and graywater—that’s enough to fill 10 swimming pools. Carnival, which operates several cruise brands with large ships including Carnival Cruise Line and Princess Cruises, generates around 1.3 pounds of food waste per person per day on average. Windstar, on the other hand, operates with around 10 percent of the passengers of large vessels.

Inside Windstar Cruises’ dreamy plant-based menu

Even if you miss out on the dreamy plant-based voyage to Tahiti, there are plenty of other vegan-friendly voyages with Windstar to choose from. In fact, the cruise line is renowned for the vegan-friendly dining experiences on all of its yachts, from the Wind Surf yacht, which is fitted with 171 staterooms, to its smallest yachts, like the Wind Spirit, which has just 74 staterooms on board.

Aside from smaller crowds, the size of the yachts is important: it means that Windstar can take you to places that other, larger cruise ships can’t (some of its most popular voyages include Tahiti and the Tuamotu Islands, Iceland’s fjords, and Niue in the South Pacific), but also that the crew can always offer an intimate, personal experience. They’ll get to know you and your dietary requirements, Chiang promises, and strive to make sure you have the very best plant-based options at every meal.

A few examples of some of the vegan options you can expect to be treated to include citrus pumpkin risotto, vegetable enchiladas, and eggplant cannelloni, and on Star Class ships like Star Pride and Star Breeze, there is also plant-based Korean bulgogi.

For breakfast, you can choose from options like fresh fruit smoothies, oatmeal, and muffins, all of which you can order straight to your room for maximum comfort (date pancakes are also available on special request). If you’re craving something sweet, expect to come across options like mango lime tart, chia seed truffles served with coconut sauce, and tahini brownies with fresh strawberries for dessert.

If you’re traveling with a group, it’s important to note that vegan options aren’t just for those who eat a plant-based diet. Chiang notes that many guests who are simply trying to eat healthier options have tried them and been suitably impressed.

pineapple sweet potato pudding

“So far the feedback on our plant-based options has been positive. There are quite a few guests who are interested in trying to eat healthier, but often have a misconception that healthy foods are not flavorful or tasty,” she explained. “Our guest feedback is very important to us, as it helps us improve and innovate our menus.”
