The 16-date spring tour will only visit a total of 10 cities in the U.S. and Canada, but notably makes a point to include two shows per city in select markets. The forthcoming reissue of their 1999 debut will reportedly include two bonus tracks, a full band/piano version of “Spoke in the Wheel”, and an acoustic version of “Black Pearl”.

LIVE REVIEW: Black Label Society – Denver, April 25th 2019

The oriental theater - denver, colorado.

29 April 2019 Brendan Driscoll

Black Label Society - Denver 2019 | Photo: Brendan Driscoll

Black Label Society–guitarist Zakk Wylde’s home away from Ozzy for a full twenty years now–rallied its Colorado “chapter” with a pair of deep-voiced and vigorous shows that celebrated the band’s origins as well as its continued potency.  It’s a strong start to their brisk U.S. spring tour, which includes five other two-night stands.

The first of the two nights is all Sonic Brew , the first of BLS’s ten studio albums.  Back in 1999, Sonic Brew was an unusual beast, a recognizable descendant of Black Sabbath in its detuned, riff-oriented heaviness, but with a muscular U.S. biker-band ethos in place of the ur-metal band’s angsty occultism.  Several commentators, and Wylde himself, have emphasized Southern rock influences, and sure, they are there too, in the full-throated anthemic choruses and  outlaw-with-a-humbucker ethos.  But with Wylde’s rejection of ‘80s Sunset Strip excess (which even his godfather Ozzy reveled in for a while) and his occasional moments of emotional vulnerability, you could be forgiven for having parked Strange Brew next to Alice in Chains or some other grungy stuff in your 5-disc CD changer.  The late 1990s were confusing times in the world of guitar rock.

Concurrent with the tour is BLS’s re-release of Sonic Brew , which has been “re-blended,” which is sort of like remastered, except that Wylde didn’t have all of the component tapes, and had to get creative and re-record some parts.  Sonic Brew didn’t have the commercial traction of some of BLS’s subsequent albums, but it clearly touched some people here in Denver.  Despite some earlier electrical grid problems in the Berkeley neighborhood–a corner of northwest Denver in which refurbished ranch homes surround a long-shuttered (and possibly haunted) amusement park–the crowd at the old-school Oriental Theater is eager to hear the early stuff, and happy when the acoustic guitars come out.

The second night gets more interesting.   Spring is in the air, the band is already loosened up, and the consensus up in the balcony is that the acoustics of the house are extremely well tuned.  After “Whole Lotta Sabbath,” a silly-funky Sabbath-Led Zeppelin mashup recording played through the PA, the giant BLS-skull curtain disappears.  And suddenly there’s Wylde, already in full Viking attack-mode, fist-pumping and swirling his hair around and giving the audience the crazy-eyes while blasting high-gain sounds out of his guitar, which like most of his Wylde Audio signature line, suggests a cross between a high-end Gibson and a battle-axe from the cover art of a D&D module.  Wylde and his pile-of-skulls microphone stand are front-and-center, a raised platform amplifying his already imposing presence (he’s 6’2” and lifts a lot of weights).  Along with his BLS biker-denim vest, he’s wearing a kilt.

Night two is very much a greatest hits evening, celebrating tunes released in the two decades since Sonic Brew , including several from the ironically titled Grimmest Hits album, which was released last year and contained all new material.  (“I just wanted to confuse people,” the ever-jokey Wylde told Billboard. )  A few songs in, the band downshifts into the high-torque groove of “Trampled Down Below,” fresh from the new album, and the crowd cheers in recognition.

“All That Once Shined,” a mid-tempo minor-key stomp with Ozzy-esque vocals and an interlude reminiscent of Black Sabbath Vol. 4 , gets people head-bobbing.  There’s not really a moshpit–median age here is like 45–but the energy is palpable.  There are many BLS biker jackets.  One of Wylde’s more ingenious moves early on, well before the TED-talkers started talking about tribalism as a marketing vehicle, was to appropriate some Hells Angels trappings, as well as the outlaw rhetoric of biker-gang loyalty.  Fans will tell you they “bleed BLS” and their intensity is convincing.  There is, no joke, a BLS-themed Harley parked out front.

Rhythm guitarist Dario Lorina, the lanky and versatile Shrapnel Records shredder, takes to the piano for “Bridge to Cross,” originally released on the 1919 Eternal album (2002), but yields the bench to Wylde for “Spoke in the Wheel,” a ballad from Sonic Brew repeated on the Unblackened live album (2013) and later re-released in an “unplugged” video.  Wylde plays piano much like he plays guitar, with lots of heavy pounding and a palpable sense of humor–several times he pretends to lunge at the audience, teasing them with his wild-man glare–but his emotional commitment to this song is significant.  Covered in sweat, his hair sticking to his face, Wylde is resonant and affecting with his gruff baritone:

“ Some day you’ll know just how it feels Shattered, cast aside, stripped of your pride Like you were never nothing special Made you feel like another spoke in the wheel”

Black Label Society - Denver 2019 | Photo: Brendan Driscoll

I’ll tell you my secret theory about why Black Label Society engenders such loyalty among its fans.  It’s not because the band is particularly heavy, or rocks particularly hard, though they are, and they do.  Nor is it the biker stuff, though that certainly helps to establish a tribal mindset.  Nor is it the abundant testosterone:  the bared biceps, the ripped denim, the leather forearm bracers, the vaguely orcish vibe one gets from mega-talented bass player John DeServio.  Rather, I think it’s the ache and anguish of ballads like “Spoke in the Wheel” and “The Day That Heaven Had Gone Away” and “In This River,” that bind this group together.  Tribes are about shared values and apparel choices, but they are also about shared vulnerability.  And the loss and regret seeping from these ballads connects hard with the BLS tribe precisely because it’s made OK by all of the hard-rocking masculinity, as dudes with motorcycles and mountain-man beards pour one out for their brothers who couldn’t be with them tonight.

Case in point:  during “In This River,” the roadies unfurl giant pictures of fallen Pantera musicians Dimebag Darrell, shot to death by a deranged fan in 2004, and Vinnie Paul, felled by a heart attack last year.  People raise their drinks.  Wylde, too, raises his cup even though he stopped boozing a few years ago.  It’s a genuinely moving display.

Come to think of it, BLS owes a lot to Pantera as well.  The crunch, the groove metal-thing, the biker-outlaw mystique.  The guitar prowess but also the sense of mischief.

Personally, the highlight of the night was when I stepped out briefly to take some notes and use the restroom, and was nearly knocked over by Wylde himself, who along with a security detail had barrelled up the front aisle en route to the balcony, all the while hammering triplets on his guitar, played behind his head, Hendrix style.  It was red meat for the fans, who were allowed to swarm close but just out of reach.   And oh how the tribe loved it.

CONCERT REVIEW: BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER and ALIEN WEAPONRY at Revolution Live, Fort Lauderdale (October 8th, 2019)

black label society tour 2019

Ever since he first took the stage as the guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne , metal has lived on in the heart of larger-than-life star Zakk Wylde . From his iconic bullseye guitars to the founding of heavy metal group Black Label Society , Wylde has been a mainstay in the metal scene for decades, and shows no sign of slowing down. This year, Black Label Society brings their breed of darkness to North America with a tour in celebration of their 20th anniversary. On October 8th, Black Label Society delivered the pinnacle of two decades of expertise to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida with two supporting acts in tow.

Subculture and culture came together in a dazzling union with opening act Alien Weaponry . A thrash act from New Zealand, the trio have gained their fame through the language of their songs; the group sings almost exclusively in Te Reo Māori, the native language of New Zealand. These young musicians brought their all in celebrating their culture on stage, and however brief the five-song set may have been, Alien Weaponry made the very most of it. Passionate delivery of some of their most popular songs, including the grant-winning “ Ru Ana Te Whenua ,” quickly won over any in the crowd who may have been skeptics to the amateurs and their unique offerings. By the end of the set, they were strangers no longer, and had successfully imparted some of the beauty they so artistically derive both from the roots of their culture and from the foundations of classic metal.

Alien Weaponry putting New Zealand in the metal map

The rest of the night gave way to musicians who were more weathered from time in the spotlight, but no less spirited. The Black Dahlia Murder ’s frontman Trevor Strnad came roaring straight out of the gates, screams splitting through a crowd that was drawn in anticipation of a somewhat lighter fare than the death metal group had to offer. With a relentless setlist including heavy favorite “ Nightbringers ,” it seemed that The Black Dahlia Murder had set out to impress. The crowd was held captive throughout their set with near flawless technical execution from all band members and an indomitable fire that manifested itself in a daunting stage presence. The energy rippling through the crowd during closing song “ Kings of the Nightworld ” was absolutely infectious, voices screaming back with vigor that matched the ceaseless intensity of the band’s brief but memorable time on stage.

Anticipation was heavy in the air waiting for the main event to begin, the excited buzz of an audience awaiting an icon crackling like static. The moment Wylde threw himself into the lights, hair streaming like a cloak around the man and his guitar, all eyes were glued to him. His fingers ran comfortably over riffs that held enraptured gazes, his vocals never so much as wavering as he flexed his capacity to tackle two demanding roles at once. Showing both professionalism and duality, Wylde juggled the shredding that has become synonymous with his name on top of punchy vocal delivery in a star-studded display of dexterity. With both newer tracks such as “ Spoke in the Wheel ” and older classics such as “ In This River ” on the setlist, the 20 years spent in Black Label Society culminated in a performance that centered on the famed frontman’s ability to both master his role as a musician and carry the crowd as a consummate entertainer.

Zakk Wylde commanding the stage with Black Label Society

By the end of the night, there was no question why Zakk Wylde has hung clung to stardom so reliably across time. His dynamic, commanding personality filled up the venue with a contagious excitement, delivered through the unchained aggression and technical mastery over his instrument. Though it was easy to be hypnotized by the endless shredding that took place beneath practiced hands, there was no way to ignore the clear joy for performing that shone across an expressive face. If he’s grown tired of closing out shows with “ Stillborn ,” he doesn’t show it; Wylde poured his heart into the final song of the night with the same charisma he had first taken the stage with. Black Label Society left a lasting reminder as the lights finally dimmed; heavy metal is still alive and well, and there’s still room for bombastic superstars on stage to give it that heartbeat.

Black Label Society announce fall 2019 North American tour with The Black Dahlia Murder and Alien Weaponry

Zakk Wylde's band will embark on a month-long trek in September

Black Label Society announce fall 2019 North American tour with The Black Dahlia Murder and Alien Weaponry

Black Label Society will embark on a North American headlining tour this fall, with support from The Black Dahlia Murder and Alien Weaponry .

The just-announced month-long outing kicks off September 11th in Ventura, California, and runs through an October 13th show in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

Black Label Society frontman Zakk Wylde, who also plays guitar in Ozzy Osbourne’s band, had his schedule open up when Ozzy postponed all of his 2019 tour dates due to injuries he suffered in a fall at home. Now, Wylde is filling up his itinerary with dates involving his other projects.

Having released a 20th anniversary re-working of their debut album, Sonic Brew , earlier this year, and their most recent studio album, Grimmest Hits , last year, Black Label Society have plenty of material to cull from for this upcoming tour.

Elsewhere on the bill, The Black Dahlia Murder continue to tour in support of their 2017 album, Nightbringers , while New Zealand metal upstarts Alien Weaponry are supporting their 2018 full-length debut, Tū . For the last two dates of the tour, the band Toke will take over Alien Weaponry’s slot as the opening act.

Tickets for the tour go on sale this Friday, June 21st. Once shows sell out, tickets will be available here .

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY is continuing to tour in support of its tenth full-length album, "Grimmest Hits" , which was released in January 2018 via Entertainment One ( eOne ).

Regarding the songwriting process for "Grimmest Hits" , guitarist/vocalist Zakk Wylde told the Omaha World-Herald : "The only ideas I really had [prior to going into the studio] were 'The Only Words' . I wrote that when I was sitting in a hotel room. It reminded me of a CREAM thing. The only other riff I had laying around was 'Trampled Down Below' .

"Every record that we do, it's like a box of cracker jacks," he continued. "We don't know what we're gonna get till we get there.

"That's the whole fun thing about making records. You're going in with, 'Let's see what happens.'

"You could be listening to 'Heart Of Gold' on the radio and then me and you listening to that, it'd be cool if we wrote something like that.

"A lot of things happen like that. You get sparked off by writing the riff. Listening to [ LED ] ZEPPELIN or [ BLACK ] SABBATH or THE ALLMAN BROTHERS . What you end up coming out with can be something different."

In a separate interview with Beatroute , Zakk talked about how he came up with the title for the new BLACK LABEL SOCIETY album.

"The record company was like, 'Are there any hits on this record?'" he said. "I said, 'No. It's rather bleak and rather grim.' That's why I went with 'Grimmest Hits' . You see, in order to have greatest-hits album, you need to have one special ingredient: good songs. We don't have any of those."

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY is:

Zakk Wylde - Vocals/Guitar John DeServio - Bass Dario Lorina - Guitar Jeff Fabb - Drums

UPDATE: Unfortunately, due to unforeseen sudden circumstances beyond our control, this tour is no longer... Posted by Lord Dying on  Tuesday, October 1, 2019
