Do you have any current job openings?

We post all our open positions here . As soon as we determine which of our current SIFF Cinema staff would like the opportunity to work at this new venue, we will be posting more job openings.

How can I volunteer?

We are very excited to welcome volunteers into our new theater. Please check out our Volunteer page for more information on how to join us.

What’s the history of the venue?

The Cinerama first opened in 1963 but met with declining business and faced demolition by the late 1980s. Paul Allen purchased the theater and began a series of renovations, creating a destination theater for blockbuster first-run movies and a variety of film festivals. The venue closed following Allen’s death and prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pursuant to Allen’s wishes, it was earmarked to be sold with all Estate proceeds to be dedicated to philanthropy.

Why did you have to change the name?

Vulcan/The Allen Estate licensed the name from the original owner when it reopened 20+ years ago, but did not own the name “Cinerama.” The original terms of use of the name stated that upon sale, the name reverts solely to the owner and cannot be transferred with the property.

SIFF Cinema Downtown will be a temporary name until we determine a feasible timeline of moving forward to involve the public to select a permanent name and funding rebrand costs.

How was this acquisition financially possible for SIFF?

SIFF was presented with an exciting opportunity to acquire the Cinerama in late 2022 and is very grateful for the dedicated board members, donors, and grantors who supported this dream with financing. Without these generous funders, this simply would not have been possible for SIFF. In the coming months, SIFF will need even more community support as we move forward with a Capital Campaign to raise funds for first year startup costs. Consider a donation today .

SIFF is a non-profit, and this acquisition was something we hoped for, but would not have been possible without external funding. These designated contributions, the Wyncote foundation, the Paul Allen Estate’s generosity, and passionate funders made this possible for SIFF and for the community.

How will SIFF be using the City of Seattle & King County grants approved in August 2023?

Sums of $950,000 allotted in the City of Seattle’s mid-year supplemental budget, and $1,000,000 from King County were both approved August 2023. These funds will make it possible to open the theater as soon as possible and help with:

  • Signage – New signage was needed to cover any instance of the Cinerama name/mark, due to the legalities of the trademark law that was a part of the agreement in acquiring the space.
  • Staffing - This will be one of the largest expenses to start this business, requiring 20+ employees to be hired and trained prior to opening.
  • Acquisition - SIFF will use a portion of the King County funding to help offset the building acquisition costs.
  • Equipment Refurbishing - The theater is in beautiful shape, so no major renovations were needed. SIFF has refurbished equipment that had been sitting unused for three years including concessions, IT infrastructure and projection equipment, which all require time and funds. To get to the chocolate popcorn is more work than you would imagine!
  • Public Benefit Programs - A large part of the City funds will also be allocated towards starting and sustaining new programs outlined in the budget amendment, including new positions and internships as well as community outreach programming.

Can I read more about SIFF’s path to reopening the theater?

Sure! Take a look at the May 11 press release (“SIFF Acquires Seattle Cinerama Theater,” as well as our archived Updates page for some background info on how we got to a reopening date.

Dream Theater’s 40th Anniversary Tour to Hit North America Right on Time

By Kory Grow

Dream Theater may be kicking off their 40th anniversary celebrations in Europe next month (a year early since they formed in 1985), but they’ll celebrate their ruby anniversary properly in their home country next year (for their actual 40th anniversary.)

The prog-metal band, which recently reunited with founding drummer Mike Portnoy, will kick off a run of North American dates in Philly on Feb. 7. The trek, billed as “An Evening With Dream Theater” (which means no opener and more Dream Theater), will wrap in late March with a concert at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall, near their Long Island stomping grounds.

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. local time on Friday. Full details are on the band’s website .

In April, the full band met with Rolling Stone to talk about their reunion with Portnoy and how they overcame a bitter war of words in the press. “Before the Covid pandemic, if you had asked me or any of these guys, ‘Was a reunion in the cards?’ I probably would’ve said, ‘I doubted that it could happen,'” Portnoy said. “I think if the lockdown hadn’t happened, you guys probably would’ve been on tour, and I would’ve been on tour with one of my 48 bands.”

Rugby Championship: Australian humiliation, All Blacks in a rut, Pumas improving, Springboks winning - what's next?

Wallabies remain at lowest ebb after rout by Argentina; are the All Blacks a true fading force? Watch each Test of Rugby Championship live on Sky; Sky Sports will broadcast eighth consecutive Lions tour with exclusive rights in Australia between June 28-August 2, 2025

By Michael Cantillon

Australia, New Zealand, Valetini, Ardie Savea

Australian rugby remains at a low ebb after their humiliating Rugby Championship defeat to Argentina, and may even have hit rock-bottom, while the All Blacks appear a genuine fading force...

Wallabies remain at their lowest ebb?

For most Australian rugby fans, the calamitous and ill-fated 2023 Rugby World Cup campaign under Eddie Jones in France was their nadir.

Australia, Jake Gordon

Back in October, Jones resigned after a disastrous nine-month spell back in charge of the Wallabies, having been sacked by England before that.

In the space of just four months of Tests (having been hired in January 2023, the first five months of Jones' contracted period saw no Australia Tests), Jones oversaw a terrible run of form, dreadful media relationship, shunning of experienced players and history-making World Cup pool stage failure, which saw losses to Fiji and Wales.

Jones ultimately became Japan coach despite repeated public denials any interviews or conversations took place, while Australia looked to a new dawn in hiring former Ireland head coach and recent All Blacks assistant Joe Schmidt.

Yet, Saturday saw the Wallabies humiliated and embarrassed in a 67-27 loss to Argentina in Santa Fe, conceding 50 points in the second half alone. It was the most points they have conceded against anyone in history, and their second-largest margin of defeat ever.

Aussie loss to Argentina

As such, the argument could be made this is Australia's rock-bottom, and even worse than the shambles that were the Wallabies under Jones.

Less toxic and more stable off the pitch they may be, but on it? Australia look incredibly weak.

In his time in charge of Ireland, Schmidt guided them to three Six Nations titles, one Grand Slam, two historic Test victories over New Zealand and Test-series victories over the Pumas in Argentina and Wallabies in Australia.

He was most recently part of an All Blacks coaching set-up which outwitted then world No 1 Ireland in the World Cup quarters and guided New Zealand to a final they should have won against South Africa in Paris in October, despite playing the majority of the final a man down after Sam Cane's red card.

Any tentative progress made as Australia head coach appears to have blown apart, however, with that damaging performance and result in South America.

The Wallabies were 20-3 ahead against the Pumas before collapsing and falling to that startling 67-27 scoreline. What does that say about the mentality of the side? Or rather, their fragility.

Australia head coach Joe Schmidt says the manner of the defeat is unacceptable and they will review the whole game after his side suffered a history breaking record Test match defeat to Argentina.

Schmidt's first games in charge of Australia came against a struggling Wales side in the July Test window.

A 2-0 series victory duly arrived, but without the domination or level of performance expected. The first Test saw Australia win 25-16 in Sydney, while the second finished 36-28 in Melbourne.

For context, those results came against a Wales side who picked up the 2024 Six Nations Wooden Spoon after five defeats from five, are on a current run of nine straight defeats, and who lost 15 of their 20 Tests in the years before last autumn's World Cup.

Wales are one of the poorest sides in world rugby at present, leaving Australia in a false position of security after July, potentially.

Indeed, roll around to this Rugby Championship and the Wallabies began with a heavy 33-7 loss to South Africa in Brisbane.

They then followed that up with another demoralisingly comprehensive home loss to the Boks - 30-12 this time in Perth.

In Round 3, they had to turn around a 10-point deficit in Argentina to win via the final kick, while Round 4 saw that 40-point defeat.

Australia captain Harry Wilson shares his emotions on the back of losing to Argentina in the Rugby Championship in his country's heaviest ever score margin deficit in a Test match.

They must now face the All Blacks in home and away Tests, having lost their last seven Tests against New Zealand and not lifted the Bledisloe Cup since 2002.

Schmidt's side need better defensive solidity, to progress their set-piece to the point it is reliable, and to exhibit more flair in attack - the latter may prove impossible under a coach renowned for negative attacking rugby.

Big improvements remain necessary. Remember, there's the small matter of a British and Irish Lions series in Australia in less than a year's time, live on Sky Sports .

All Blacks stuck in a rut: A true fading force?

And what of New Zealand's All Blacks? For so long, they were the dominant force in world rugby. Now? They appear a proper fading force.

All Blacks

Even when All Blacks sides of recent times have suffered defeats and a loss of form, they have managed to pick up the Rugby Championship title.

Indeed, they have won the last four in a row despite South Africa being World Cup champions during the same period, and have won 10 of the 12 tournaments since Argentina joined in 2012.

They will not, however, win it in 2024 after an uncharacteristic three defeats from the opening four rounds under new head coach Scott Robertson.

First they suffered a shock home defeat to Argentina in Wellington on the opening night, going down 38-30 - and this against a side the All Blacks beat 44-6 in their World Cup semi-final 10 months previous.

NA v ARG

After a backlash 42-10 win over the Pumas, back-to-back fixtures away to World Cup champions South Africa followed - the side New Zealand lost the 2023 World Cup final to by an agonising solitary point, having been the better side despite playing with a player less after the 30th minute.

South Africa had lost at home to Ireland over the summer, but kicked on late against the All Blacks in Johannesburg to turn a 27-17 deficit into a 31-27 victory inside the final 12 minutes.

Highlights of the Rugby Championship match between South Africa and New Zealand

A week on, South Africa beat New Zealand again by a score of 18-12 in Cape Town, making the Springboks firm favourites now to go on and clinch the title for the first time since 2019.

South Africa 18-12 New Zealand

The All Blacks faced England in a two-Test series in July, and were fortunate to come out on the right side of two very tight encounters on home soil, winning 16-15 and 24-17.

New Zealand vs England - 1st Test

The look decidedly shaky and far from the same danger to opposition they did at and before the World Cup - and that was a side who lost to France on the opening night, and also lost a home series 2-1 to Ireland in 2022.

It's worth noting the current New Zealand squad is vastly different from the one which lined out in the 2023 World Cup final, though.

Legends of All Blacks rugby in Sam Whitelock, Brodie Retallick, Dane Coles and Aaron Smith have retired, while others in Richie Mo'unga, Shannon Frizell, Leicester Fainga'anuku and Nepo Laulala have left for playing opportunities overseas.

Robertson has his work cut out, and is falling on the wrong side of results at present. The All Blacks aura is gone, and they are going to have to go some to regain it.

What's next?

Round-by-round recap of a HR Derby that went down to the wire

Brent Maguire

Brent Maguire

Theo DeRosa

Theo DeRosa

This year’s Home Run Derby field was not only star-studded, but also featured an intriguing mix of young superstars and veteran sluggers who were playing under new rules . After a night full of dingers soaring through the Texas sky, it was an unlikely champion in Dodgers slugger Teoscar Hernández, who took the Derby crown by defeating young Royals star Bobby Witt Jr. in a thrilling final round. He became the first Dodger to win the title, and it was his first time competing in the Derby.

See below for a round-by-round breakdown of the entire competition.

Complete T-Mobile HR Derby coverage • Tracking every home run hit in the Derby • Round-by-round Derby breakdown • Derby history: Looking back at past slugfests • These players have the most HR Derby titles

(4) Teoscar Hernández defeats (3) Bobby Witt Jr.

Witt HR total : 13 After hitting a combined 37 home runs between the first round and semifinals, Witt capped his night by hitting 13 in the finals but finishing just one short of Hernández. On his final swing in bonus time, Witt hit a ball 406 feet to one of the deepest parts of the ballpark in center field that hit the middle of the wall. Had it gone over, Witt and Hernández would’ve had a swing-off to determine the Derby champion.

LONGEST HR: 457 feet HARDEST HR: 110 mph AVG. HR DISTANCE: 409 feet AVG. HR EXIT VELO: 102.7 mph

Hernández HR total : 14 Hernández’s timeout -- and chat with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. -- proved crucial in his finals performance, with the slugger hitting five homers in six swings at one point not long after the pause. Hernández averaged 430 feet on his 14 home runs, including two 449-foot blasts during bonus time. His longest homer, toward the end of regulation, traveled 454 feet.

LONGEST HR: 454 feet HARDEST HR: 111 mph AVG. HR DISTANCE: 430 feet AVG. HR EXIT VELO: 106.5 mph

(4) Teoscar Hernández eliminates (1) Alec Bohm via swing-off

Swing-off : Hernández (2 HRs), Bohm (1 HR) Hernández got the better of Bohm in the first swing-off of the 2024 Derby as both competitors hit 14 home runs in their semifinal rounds. Hernández homered on the last two of his three swings, ending things with his longest homer of the round (456 feet). Bohm homered on his second swing but couldn’t clear the fence on his final attempt, eliminating him and sending Hernández to the finals.

Bohm HR total : 14 Bohm crushed 21 home runs in the first round and another 14 in the semifinals, tying him with Hernández and leading to a swing-off. Entering the Derby with the fewest homers (11) of any contestant, Bohm’s performance was one of the most surprising developments.

LONGEST HR: 431 feet HARDEST HR: 103.0 mph AVG. HR DISTANCE: 402 feet AVG. HR EXIT VELO: 98.0 mph

Hernández HR total: 14 After hitting 19 homers in the first round, Hernández went deep 14 times in the semifinals. Ten of those came in the second half of regulation as Hernández got red hot after his timeout midway through, slugging seven homers in a nine-pitch span. The Dodgers slugger found the most success to left-center field, although several of his homers went out to straightaway left. Hernández added one bonus-time homer.

LONGEST HR: 454 feet HARDEST HR: 109 mph AVG. HR DISTANCE: 423 feet AVG. HR EXIT VELO: 105.5 mph

(3) Bobby Witt Jr. eliminates (2) José Ramírez

Witt HR total : 17 Witt closed out regulation on a hot streak, homering seven times on the final 10 pitches he saw. The third seed in the semifinals got in a groove after taking his timeout with 1:40 to go, hitting 11 homers after that point before the end of regulation. Witt couldn’t add on in bonus time, though, making outs on all three swings to end his semifinal round at 17 homers.

LONGEST HR: 454 feet HARDEST HR: 108 mph AVG. HR DISTANCE: 407 feet AVG. HR EXIT VELO: 102.6 mph

Ramírez HR total : 12 Ramírez struggled to follow up on his excellent first round that featured 21 home runs. He had just 11 in regulation in the semifinals (compared to 15 in the first round) and one in bonus time after crushing six bonus home runs in the previous round. After having just one stretch of four straight homerless swings in the first round, Ramírez had a seven-swing stretch with no home runs and another six-swing drought in the semis.

LONGEST HR: 407 feet HARDEST HR: 103.0 mph AVG. HR DISTANCE: 385 feet AVG. HR EXIT VELO: 97.6 mph

Alec Bohm (advanced to semifinals) HR total : 21

Bohm got into a groove after a slow start, consistently finding the stands in left and left-center field toward the end of his round. The Phillies third baseman homered 10 times on the final 12 pitches before bonus time, including a string of five straight pitches. Bohm picked things up significantly after the first minute -- he homered just once on his first seven pitches before starting to find his power swing. Bohm finished regulation with 20 home runs and added another homer in bonus time to finish with 21.

LONGEST HR: 445 feet HARDEST HR: 105 mph AVG. HR DISTANCE: 407 feet AVG. HR EXIT VELO: 100.7 mph

Bobby Witt Jr. (advanced to semifinals) HR total : 20

Selected to his first All-Star Game and appearing in the Derby for the first time, Witt struggled to get things going but went on a serious run to finish. After homering just five times before his first timeout, the Texas native had 11 home runs in the rest of regulation, including on six of his final nine swings to finish with 16 regulation homers. Witt added four more in bonus time to finish with 20.

LONGEST HR: 442 feet HARDEST HR: 111 mph AVG. HR DISTANCE: 409 feet AVG. HR EXIT VELO: 105.0 mph

Adolis García (eliminated) HR total : 18

Just like he did in the 2023 postseason, García got hot seemingly in an instant. A few swings after his timeout midway through his round, “El Bombi” powered up with nine home runs in an 11-pitch span. The hot stretch helped García reach 18 regulation homers, but he didn't hit one on any of his three swings in bonus time.

LONGEST HR: 435 feet HARDEST HR: 106 mph AVG. HR DISTANCE: 403 feet AVG. HR EXIT VELO: 100.7 mph

Teoscar Hernández (advanced to semifinals) HR total : 19

Appearing in his second career All-Star Game and first Derby, Hernández started hot by homering on four of the first five swings he took within the first 30 seconds. After slowing down in the rest of regulation, he went on a serious tear with six home runs in the bonus round to finish with 19 total. Hernández crushed six home runs that traveled 440-plus feet, including a 466-foot clout.

LONGEST HR: 466 feet HARDEST HR: 111 mph AVG. HR DISTANCE: 430 feet AVG. HR EXIT VELO: 105.1 mph

Pete Alonso (eliminated) HR total : 12

Alonso, the 2019 and 2021 Derby champion bidding for his third title, did not hit enough home runs to finish in the top four and advance to the next round. It was tough sledding for the Polar Bear throughout his round -- he hit five homers before taking his timeout with 1:37 remaining and hit just four more in the rest of regulation. Alonso added three homers during bonus time, but it wasn’t enough to move on.

LONGEST HR: 446 feet HARDEST HR: 109 mph AVG. HR DISTANCE: 417 feet AVG. HR EXIT VELO: 105.5 mph

José Ramírez (advanced to semifinals) HR total : 21

After hitting 17 first-round home runs as a righty at the 2022 Derby at Dodger Stadium, Ramírez’s decision to hit left-handed this year paid off with 21 first-round homers. Ramírez remained remarkably consistent, with few prolonged homerless stretches while hitting homers between 380-420 feet. Ramírez homered 10 times before his timeout and went deep six times in the bonus round.

LONGEST HR: 419 feet HARDEST HR: 107.0 mph AVG. HR DISTANCE: 398 feet AVG. HR EXIT VELO: 101.2 mph

Marcell Ozuna (eliminated) HR total : 16

Ozuna picked things up after taking a timeout with just four homers under his belt and 1:40 remaining, homering on six of eight pitches at one point to pick up his pace significantly. He outpaced all of the previous first-round hitters in terms of distance, topping out with a 473-foot blast and averaging 426 feet on his homers. Ozuna crushed 14 homers in regulation and added two more in bonus time, but it wasn’t enough to advance to the semifinals.

LONGEST HR: 473 feet HARDEST HR: 110 mph AVG. HR DISTANCE: 426 feet AVG. HR EXIT VELO: 105.1 mph

Gunnar Henderson (eliminated) HR total : 11

Entering the All-Star break with the third-most home runs (28) in the Majors and the most among Derby participants, Henderson struggled outside of a stretch during which he homered on four straight swings in regulation. While the 23-year-old Orioles superstar quite have enough power in his custom Scooby-Doo themed bat Monday, there are ample chances for Henderson to redeem himself in a future contest.
