The 2022 DGPT Championships – A Heated Battle for a Record Payout
The 2022 Disc Golf Pro Tour Championships have brought this year’s DGPT season to an end. Team Innova had 12 players, six in MPO and six in FPO, who qualified to play with their outstanding performances this 2022 season.
The event had the biggest tournament payout in the history of disc golf, with a total purse of $302,000! First place in both divisions received a record-setting $35,000. The Disc Golf Pro Tour has managed to top themselves each year at this event, consistently breaking payout records, and setting a precedent for equal pay between divisions.
This year, for the first time, the Disc Golf Pro Tour Championships took place at Nevin Park in Charlotte, North Carolina. Nevin is a classic North Carolina style course that favors players who disc down and stay in the fairway. Gap hitting and strong scramble skills are a must. Bogies and bad tree kicks are almost inevitable, so players who can avoid getting frustrated will have an advantage. With so many courses on tour benefiting athletes with big arms, Nevins is an excellent end-of-season test of accuracy and mental fortitude.
Six Team Innova Men Qualify
Jeremy Koling earned himself a spot to play in Round One by winning the six person play-in event for the MPO. In Round One, Koling met Innova Teammates Gregg Barsby , Garrett Gurthie , Anthony Barela , and Bradley Williams , in a matchup of 16 players competing for four spots in the Quarterfinals.
Bradley Williams shot the hot round of the week at -7 to earn himself a place in the Quarterfinals. In Round One, Bradley Williams’ putter did not hit the ground, making 100% of his putts from both Circle One and Circle Two!

Calvin Heimburg and Joel Freeman earned themselves byes through to the semifinals with their unbelievable 2022 seasons. Both players shot solid rounds. Joel made a late run, taking birdie on three of the last four holes to get to -2. Calvin made 100% of his putts from Circle One and three from Circle Two in the semifinals. Joel and Calvin will each take home $5,500 for making it to the semis, an amount that would be a respectable first place prize at most tournaments.
Ohn Scoggins Putts Her Way onto the Podium
In the FPO, Hailey King and Jessica Weese qualified in a close and exciting play-in round. In the Quarterfinals, they met Emily Beach , Kat Mertsch , Maria Oliva , and Eveliina Salonen in a matchup of 12 players competing for four spots in the semifinals.
Eveliina earned a spot in the semifinals, taking birdie on the last two holes to barely edge out Sarah Hokem. Eveliina, a player best-known for her unmatched driving capabilities, led last weekend’s tournament in C2 putting for the FPO!
Ohn Scoggins went into the Pro Tour Championship as the number four seed. That position gave her a bye into the semifinals. In the semis, Ohn made 100% of her Circle One putts and multiple putts from deep Circle Two to move into the Pro Tour Finals.

In the Finals, Ohn yet again made every putt inside the circle, shooting even par and taking 2nd place! She won $20,000 dollars, the biggest payout of her career. This season, Ohn Scoggins won the Masters Worlds, the Tim Selinske Masters, The FPO Match-Play Championship, and podiumed at 6 other Elite Series and Major events. This 2nd place result in the Pro Tour Finals caps off a sensational season for Ohn.
2022 DGPT Season Comes to Close
Team Innova had an absolutely fantastic 2022, with Seven DGPT Silver Series and Elite Series victories and over 30 podium finishes. We won 15 age-protected Major titles between the 2022 PDGA Masters and Juniors Worlds and the 2022 Tim Selinske Masters . And Hailey King won her first Major title (of many to come) at the 2022 United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship.
It is bitter-sweet to see such a memorable season come to an end. The players will appreciate the chance to rest and recover, spend time at home, and tweak anything that may have been off in their game during the year. But we know for lovers of disc golf coverage like us, we are already counting the days until February and the Las Vegas Challenge! Innova will be putting out tutorials, season highlights, and much more this offseason to get everyone ready for what is shaping up to be our most exciting year yet, 2023. How the 2023 DGPT Championship Works & More
The 2023 Disc Golf Pro Tour Championship was in Charlotte, North Carolina , from Thursday, October 12 to Sunday, October 16. The event featured 32 MPO and 20 FPO competitors. Like it has most every year since the DGPT began in 2016 , the format of the DGPT Championship changed for 2023. To find out how worked, use the post navigation below.

What Course Is Being Used for the 2023 DGPT Championship?
All rounds of the 2023 DGPT Championship were again played at Nevin Park Disc Golf Course (also the event's host in 2022), a jewel of a track in Charlotte, North Carolina , one of the best disc golf cities in the United States.
Those who loved the woods golf at Charlotte's Hornets Nest – which hosted the DGPT Championship from 2019-2021 – found plenty to like at Nevin the last two years. Like Hornets Nest, Nevin has produced tight, drama-filled competition.

How Did Players Qualify for the 2023 DGPT Championship?
Players qualified for the 2023 DGPT Championship in two ways:
- Winning an eligible PDGA Major or DGPT Elite , Elite+ , or Playoff Event
- Spots not filled by winners of those events went to the players with the most 2023 DGPT points
In MPO, 32 players qualified for the 2023 DGPT Championship. In FPO, the total is 20. If a player within either division's cut line declined to compete, the next player in line by points then qualified.
Players earned DGPT points in 2023 based on their finishes at DGPT events, three PDGA Majors , and six selected PDGA Euro Tour events throughout the season. To fully understand the points system, give our post "How Disc Golf Pro Tour Points Work & Why They Matter" a read.
It didn't happen, but it was technically possible that up to 18 spots in a division's field could have been taken by event winners who were not among their division's top point earners.
How Did the 2023 DGPT Championship Work?
What makes the DGPT Championship most interesting is its unusual structure, which has always included player elimination and scores being reset to zero after each phase of the tournament. Those elements still existed in 2023, but for the first time in the competition's history, cumulative scores over two rounds were used to decide who moved on from a phase of the competition and who won.
In 2023, the DGPT Championship happened in four rounds separated into two, two-round phases: the Semifinals and Finals. Unlike in previous years, no players received automatic byes to a later stage. The winner played all four rounds of the competition.
How the 2023 DGPT Championship Worked: Overview

How the 2023 DGPT Championship Semifinals Worked
The Semifinals were two rounds, and every player in both divisions (seeds 1-32 in MPO and seeds 1-20 in FPO) played both rounds. In lieu of byes, the DGPT gave higher seeded players "starting strokes" that they could subtract from their cumulative throw totals following the Semifinals' two rounds. Since seeds were given out based on tour points standings (more points equaled a better seed), these strokes were meant to give an advantage to those who performed best at tournaments awarding 2023 DGPT points. Tap or click to see how many starting strokes each seed at the 2023 DGPT Championship got in MPO or FPO.
The 12 MPO and 8 FPO players with the best cumulative scores from those two rounds moved on to their divisions' Finals.
How the 2023 DGPT Championship Finals Worked
The Finals were also two rounds, but this time there were no "starting strokes" and better seeds had no advantage. Players' scores were reset to zero, and whichever player turned in the lowest cumulative score from the two rounds of the Finals was their division's champion.
Seeding at the 2023 DGPT Championship
Seeding at the DGPT Championship was based entirely on tour point standings and didn't matter in the Finals.
The qualifying competitor with the most points from the 2023 season was the #1 seed, the qualifying competitor with the second most tour points was the #2 seed, and so on. In 2023, there were no byes, but higher seeds were given more starting strokes that gave them an advantage over lower-seeded players in the Semifinals.

All DGPT Championship Winners
Here are all DGPT Championship winners , their prizes, what seeds they were, and where they won:
These are some interesting takeaways from this chart served up with some tasty extras:
- Why are prizes so much higher lately? What immediately jumps out about these stats is the huge difference in prizes in recent years. In fact, every year starting in 2020 the DGPT Championship set records for the largest overall purse in disc golf history at the time it was held. These purses became possible because the DGPT has gained many more partners in recent years .
- Dickerson's wins were amazing but not as unexpected as Queen's When Nathan Queen won the DGPT Championship in 2021, it was practically miraculous. Our predictions gave him less than a 1% chance of winning, and in a fan competition based on picking brackets, Queen was the only player in the entire field not be chosen by at least one person as the winner. When he came out on top, it was an underdog story for the ages. In contrast, Dickerson's wins as a low seed actually weren't particularly surprising. Dickerson didn't tour nationally much during those seasons and so hadn't accumulated many points. Honing his skills by playing (and dominating) huge numbers of southeastern U.S. tournaments, Dickerson was one of the best in the world, and his Tour Championship wins weren't out of the blue.

How much Money do Pro Disc Golfers Make? Updated
I’ve often wondered if pro disc golf players make any money for playing the game professionally. Can you make a living playing disc golf and how much can you make?
So, do pro disc golfers make money? Yes, professional disc golfers do make money from tournament winnings, sponsorships, and incentives on disc sales. The average yearly income for disc golfers at the pro level is approximately $116,000 , but those with sponsorships tend to make considerably more than that.
How much money does Paul McBeth make?
Paul McBeth, probably the most recognized name in professional disc golf, took home $90,403 in prize money across 25 tournaments and has a career earnings total of just over $616k at the end of the 2021 season. On top of that, Paul recently earned a Discraft sponsorship that will pay him north of $1,000,000 spread across four years with sales incentives on signature discs.
It’s said that his contract was even renegotiated to a higher sum recently due to the popularity of his disc sales with Discraft.
Speculating a bit here, but if we do a little back of the napkin math, that means that Paul McBeth’s annual income is guessed to be at least $340,000 plus his cut of disc sales from his sponsorship with Discraft which could easily double or even triple that amount . Not bad for somebody who plays a game for a living, huh?
How much do other players make?
Now that certainly seems like a ton of money, but huge money just isn’t typical for most professional disc golfers. We need to keep in mind that Paul McBeth is one of, if not, the best disc golf player in the world, and securing a sponsorship of over a million dollars is most definitely not the norm for disc golf players.
** Note however that Ricky Wysocki, and some other top pro’s are doing fantastic these days with sponsorships of their own!
Let’s consider the earnings of the top 10 professional disc golfers on the United States Tour as of the end of 2021:
(Statistics from the official PDGA website )
Most players are certainly not at the level of Paul McBeth , and we should consider that not all of these players have lucrative sponsorships. The money from solely winning disc golf tournaments could cause some players to reconsider going pro.
The earnings drop off considerably further down the list. Let’s look at the 50th ranked male player in the United States as of 2021.
The money just isn’t there unless you score a sponsorship , which may only happen if you’re one of the best players in the world.
In 2020, the purse total was about $3.25 million; one year later, it almost doubled to $6.4 million. Compared to 2018, the Disc Golf Pro Tour payouts were 58% higher in 2021, with National Tour payouts up 61%. This is a huge increase in a short amount of time, considering the organized sport of disc golf hasn’t been around for long.
It should be said as well that high paying sponsorships are becoming more and more commonplace at the profession level for disc golfers which is making the sport more and more appealing as a career move.
Disc Golf Compared to Other Sports
I think we can all agree that Paul McBeth is doing great right now, but let’s take a step back for a second and consider that Paul is the number 1 rated professional disc golf player and has been for years.
Now ask yourself, what does the number 1 player of another sport make? How much does Lebron James make annually between salary and sponsorships? How about Tiger Woods? Tom Brady?
We’re talking millions, and in some cases, hundreds of millions of dollars per year in salary and sponsorship earnings. Not to mention percentages of merchandise sales and other personal products.
The difference in the annual salary of professional players of extremely popular sports like basketball and football compared to that of disc golf is enormous.
Why is that?
Why such a big difference?
Disc golf is relatively new. The PDGA (Professional Disc Golf Association), which is the disc golf equivalent of the NBA or the NFL was founded in 1976. Compared to other sports like basketball, which was founded in 1891, and football, which was founded in 1869, disc golf is a new sport.
Currently, there are only a few ways for pro disc golf players to make money.
Tournament Winnings
The first would be tournament winnings. Though the prize money is really quite small, usually between $1,000-$3,000 for first place. However, at the 2021 Disc Golf Pro Tour Championship, the purse was $250,000, the largest ever in disc golf history.
Keep in mind that there are costs involved in playing these tournaments, like entry fees and the cost of food and lodging. So, if you find yourself finishing out of the top three or four spots, your prize winnings quickly go down to the break-even point.
Sponsorships
Sponsorships are where the real money is. Some sponsors match tournament winnings, while some give the pro player incentives on sales of specialized disks.
But as I mentioned above, most disc golf pros aren’t likely to earn a sponsorship unless you’re one of the top players in the world. And even at that level, you’re not likely to earn a sponsorship worth huge money like Paul McBeth (unless you boot him from the number 1 spot).
Self-Promotion
Some players are active on social media. Eagle Wynne McMahon, for example, has a successful YouTube channel , which probably helps to supplement his professional income.
With all that said, interest in disc golf is rising rapidly. The number of disc golf courses had almost tripled from 2000 to 2008 alone and has only grown since.
Now, there are over 9,000 disc golf courses in the United States , with casual players numbering in the hundreds of thousands.
Access to the game is also becoming much more mainstream . Disc golf starter packs, popular from companies like Innova and Discraft, are readily available at your local sporting goods store or easily found on Amazon.com.
Professional Disc Golf is Changing
Times are certainly changing as disc golf continues to rise in popularity. We’re starting to see more interest in tournaments , and though the tournaments may not be broadcasted regularly on ESPN, there is more professionally edited tournament coverage on YouTube with professional announcers.
This may seem like a small detail, but it’s vitally important for the sport to gain interest. Disc golf needs to seem like a professional sport, and thus needs professional-looking coverage. This will allow us to connect to the sport in a more mainstream way, which could grow the sport even further.
Players like Paul McBeth are pushing for the sport to become more mainstream ; he’s said he feels companies like Innova can do more to promote the sport with commercials and other promotional material.
It’s not just about the money here. Paul has said recently said in an interview (found here ) that he thinks Discraft has positioned itself to make a big push for the sport and that they have a similar vision for the future and growth of disc golf.
Personally, I’m pumped about this push. Of course, I feel that disc golf is a wonderful sport for pros and casual players alike, and spreading the game to more people can only be a good thing.
What’s this mean for the pros and their salaries?
Well, we can only speculate from this point on, but it stands to reason that the bigger disc golf grows as a sport, the higher pro disc golfer salaries will be.
In that same line of thinking, sponsorships will most likely grow in size along with growing salaries. We may see a time when a million-dollar sponsorship for a professional disc golfer is commonplace or even a small amount as it would be in other sports.
This will all be positive for the sport in the long run. Anyone reading this article may well recognize the name Paul McBeth, but are you able to name another 10 professional disc golfers?
When the average person on the street can name their favorite disc golf player, that will be a good time for disc golf as a sport. The interest will be there, and so will the money.
When the money for promotion is ready and available, we may see courses that are better maintained, more interesting, and more accessible.
What lies ahead for the sport of disc golf will undoubtedly be exciting and ever-evolving!

2024 Tour Championship money: Here’s how much every player made
- Follow on Twitter
Scottie Scheffler on Saturday at East Lake Golf Club.
Getty Images
Scottie Scheffler, the man who’s made more money than any other PGA Tour player this season, is talking about cash.
It’s a trendy topic in golf, of course, and Tuesday, ahead of this week’s Tour Championship , the Tour’s highest-paying event, Scheffler had been asked this question by a reporter:
“If the Tour came to you — you said you’ll play how the sponsors want it. If the sponsors or Strategic Sports Group came in and wanted to completely change things up and make it a match-play event or under the lights, how open do you think Tour players would be to deviating from 72-hole stroke play? Obviously not every week, but in something like if they made the playoffs and they went way outside the box?”
In response, Scheffler labeled it “a really in-depth conversation,” and the rest of his answer reflected that.
He said he hoped to be paid fairly. He said he didn’t care what he’d he get for winning the Masters .
Here’s his complete response:
“Well, it’s a really in-depth conversation,” Scheffler started. “At the end of the day in terms of sponsors, I would play a lot of the tournaments I play throughout the year if the purses were significantly less. I would pick and choose a bit more, but if it was — if it’s the Masters, I’m going to play the Masters. I want a chance to win a major championship. I do not care what you pay me for winning the Masters. I really don’t.
“But at the end of the day in terms of a lot of those tournaments, you just want to get paid what you think would be fair. And then in terms of what sponsors want, if you’ve got FedEx putting up the kind of money they’re putting up for this event, people are going to show up to play.
“It’s a business at the end of the day. It’s part of the game. This is a product that appeals to a lot of people. Sports is entertainment, but at the end of the day I still stand on the side of the fence of my golf clubs will always be my entertainment. If you want to come watch me play golf, that’s what we’re going to see. If you’re showing up, you’re going to watch me play golf. I’m not going to go out on the first tee and do dances and celebrate like crazy. I am going to do my best to compete in a golf tournament. Wherever the best players are competing, I am showing up to those tournaments because I love the competition. That’s really what I enjoy the most.
“As far as the format goes, golf is a funny game. You’re not always going to — there’s no perfect system in order to play a golf tournament that’s the most entertaining product and also the product that gets the best player each time. A lot of times in golf, the guy that plays the best may not even win that week. In terms of little bounces, it’s a fickle game. It’s a challenging sport. I’m open to suggestions. I do still think that 72 holes of stroke play is the best format for a golf tournament, but if a sponsor wants to come in and change it up a little bit, I love competing, and I want to win when we go home and play Wolf for four hours, and I’m giving 20 strokes to a guy.
“I do not want to be giving him money at the end of the day whether it’s $5 or $500. I do not want to take out my wallet and hand him money at the end of the day. That’s just not in my blood. I want to win, whether we’re playing Ping-Pong or whatever it is.
“Whatever the format, I’m going to show up and try and do my best. That’s really all it is.”
With that, here is the complete payout breakdown for this week’s Tour Championship, played at East Lake Golf Club.

Here’s how much money the Tour Championship players actually get right away
There's a lot of money on the line for the 30 PGA Tour players competing in the 2024 Tour Championship. The 2024 Tour Championship purse is $82.925 million because the results determine the payout of that money from the FedEx Cup bonus pool , which is $100 million.
You'll hear talk about how the winner of the FedEx Cup gets $25 million, and that's true. They do get $25 million. However, they don't get that $25 million paid to them right then and there. The winner of the Tour Championship gets $24 million in cash, with $1 million deferred into their PGA Tour pension account, which could grow into much more money than that considering how well it's managed.
The second-place finisher in the Tour Championship, and therefore the FedEx Cup, gets $12.5 million in total compensation, with $11.5 million in cash and $1 million deferred. It goes on like this, down the final Tour Championship leaderboard, all the way down to 30th place, who gets $295,000 in cash for the week and $255,000 in deferred compensation.
Again, getting to the Tour Championship is a tremendous financial boon for the players, but they don't get that money right away.
