Frequently asked questions, where should i start my visit to the kentucky bourbon trail®.

There is no beginning or end to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Where you start and how you explore is up to you. Plan your trip around your favorite Bourbon brands. Or create an itinerary dedicated to discovering new brands. You can even explore the Trail™ by regions. The possibilities are limitless. We encourage you to Build Your Own Bourbon Trail® and construct the perfect trip that’s unique to you.

Where can I find directions to the distilleries?

Visit each distillery’s page on our website to find information on where each is located. You can also click the “Quickview” on each distillery’s card to find important information for each – including where they are located. Please keep in mind that sometimes cell service can get unreliable on the beautiful backroads of Kentucky.

Are reservations needed or required for distillery experiences?

It is highly recommended to book your distillery tastings, tours and other experiences online and in advance. A few distilleries have walk-in experiences, but planning a trip without booking your experiences ahead of time is highly discouraged. Most distilleries have online booking options, or you can book your experiences through one of our trusted transportation partners. Check out the distilleries in the section above for more information.

Am I allowed to ship Bourbon from a Kentucky Bourbon Trail® Distillery?

That depends. At this time, there are only a handful of reciprocal states that allow shipping from Kentucky distilleries. It also depends on whether common carriers like UPS, FedEx and others are shipping to that state. If you determine that your state does not allow shipping reciprocity for spirits, we strongly encourage you to contact lawmakers in your state and ask them to pass legislation allowing spirits to be shipped there. Visit the Ship My Spirits website to find out if you can ship spirits to your state.

However, there are other ways to get bottles back home:

You may pack distilled spirits under 140 proof (70% abv) in your checked baggage. Please ensure that the bottle is packed carefully so it doesn’t break.

The KDA also has worked with Kentucky’s three major airports (Louisville, Lexington and Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati) to create Bourbon bottle shops inside security. You can find most of our top brands there, which you can carry on the plane.

Are there any times during the year that distilleries aren’t in full production mode?

Some distilleries still observe a summer shutdown to conduct essential maintenance. Full tours are still available during these times, but you may not see Bourbon being produced. Please visit each distillery’s website for full details.

Tour our historical distillery site in Old Milford, OH

Cincinnati Distilling resides in a building that was built in the early nineteenth century, previously known as the Millcroft Inn in Milford, Ohio. It sits on lot #1 of the Old Mill District and was home to the first distillers in the area. We all know about Cincinnati’s beer history but the fact is – distilleries were just as common in Cincinnati during parts of the 19th century as breweries were. During the Prohibition era, Cincinnati distilleries all but disappeared – but lucky for us, they are making a comeback!

Northside Distilling Co.

Known for: Moonshine “Northside Shine”, Corn Whiskey, Vodka, Bourbon, Gin, American Agave, and Rum

Northside Distilling Co. was started by two good friends in the Northside neighborhood of Cincinnati. After outgrowing the Northside location in 2017, they expanded production to Race Street in downtown Cincinnati.

As they say, their production is “From Grain to Glass”. This means that every bit of their process is done by hand, from beginning to end, on site. With such a diverse portfolio of spirits, this is no small feat!

Woodstone Creek

Address: 4712 Vine Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45217

Known for: Brandy, Honey Liqueur, Five Grain Bourbon, Single Malt Whisky, Rum, Gin, Bierschnaaps, Vodka, Honeywine (Mead), and Wine

Woodstone Distillery’s carefully crafted process sticks mostly to the way things were done prior to the Industrial Revolution – small batches and no computerized equipment.

Several of their spirits have received accolades from prominent local and national publications, including a blind taste test in CityBeat Magazine where their Cincinnati Vodka was preferred over 10 nationally known brands.

You can find the Tasting Room in St. Bernard close to the St. Bernard Recreation Center. If you or your group are looking for something other than spirits, visit Friday and Saturday for the “Weekender” tasting to try five wines of your choice.

Robert James Distillery

Known for: Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Bourvin (Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Wine Barrels), Straight Rye Whiskey, and Dark Rum

Robert James is a craft distillery located in Norwood. The distillery itself hosts private parties, tastings, and group tours – but for a truly unique tasting experience and AWESOME date night idea, you’ll definitely want to visit the the RJ Cinema Distillery and Taproom (separate from the Norwood facility).

At the cinema, you can try spirits from Robert James or enjoy local craft beers. Place your food or drink order at the counter, then hang out in the taproom or watch a movie in their theater. Kids ARE allowed (though obviously not served drinks containing alcohol). Beyond just movies, the RJ Cinema also has trivia night and will soon offer distilling lessons.

Second Sight Spirits

Known for: Oak Eye Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey, Unbarreled Rum, Spiced Rum, Smoked Cherry Rum, Bourbon Barreled Rum, Dark Rum, and Queen Mab

Second Sight was started by two friends whose careers found them in Las Vegas helping create Cirque Du Soleil’s LOVE and Viva Elvis. Today, they bring the same creative experiences to their distillery in Northern Kentucky – but this time in their rum and whiskey.

At this unique distillery, you’ll find spirits inspired by the Fairy Queen and the Peot Prince, Queen Mab, and the all-seeing (Oak) Eye. Learn more about Second Sight’s “tales of the circus, Las Vegas, and Craigslist purchases” by signing up for one of their distillery tours, available on Fridays and Saturdays.

Boone County Distilling Co.

Known for: Small Batch Bourbon, Bourbon Cream, Single Barrel Bourbon, Eighteen33, Dubby Rum, Ruckers & Gaines Gin, Tanner’s Curse

Boone County Distillery Co. was first started in 1833 under the name of Petersburg Distillery. By 1860, they had produced over 1 million gallons of whiskey and became the biggest distiller in Kentucky by 1880. Unfortunately, they had to close their doors in 1910.

Fast forward over 100 years to 2015, and bourbon is once more being bottled in Boone County. That’s why Boone County Distilling Co. spirits are “Made By Ghosts®”!

Two tours are available to learn more about the distillery’s process and history: the longer Grain to Grass Experience (45 minutes), and the Mini Tour (15 minutes). Walk-ins for tours and tastings are available, but they recommend reserving your spots ahead of time on their website.

Known for: Old Pogue’s Master Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky, and Old Maysville Club Kentucky Straight Rye Malt Whisky

Old Pogue was first started in 1876 in the original Bourbon County, survived Prohibition, and lives on today led by fifth and sixth generation Pogues. Schedule a tour online to visit the distillery, sample Bourbon and Rye, and see the Pogue family home.

While in Maysville, visit the Bourbon History Galleries at the Old Pogue Experience to learn all about the Whiskey Tax Act Rebellion, Prohibition, and Maysville’s storied history of bourbon. On your way out, stop by the Still Gift Shop to take home some bourbon-themed gifts.

Karrikin Spirits Company

Known For: Blaze Blue Agave Spirit, Bourbon Barrel Aged Ora Gin, and MUCH more!

Karrikin Spirits Company is a craft distillery that serves up spirits, non-alcoholic sodas, craft beer and more.

In Spring of 2017, seven founding members with experience in brewing & distilling, woodworking, design, and more came together to purchase a building formerly occupied by Swallen’s (and later, DnD Metal) to start a journey of flavor and fire.

From there, Karrikin Spirits Company was formed — a full-service, grain to glass distillery producing handcrafted spirits, sparkling spirits, non-alcoholic sodas, and beer.

Tour The Kentucky Bourbon Trail from Cincinnati with us. We plan and coordinate with the distilleries to create a fun and unique adventure on our small 14 passenger buses. To and from Cincy in the same day on a two or three stop adventure. We want to provide full disclosure on these tours, since 2020 it has been very difficult to find space at the locations that are very popular like Buffalo Trace, Woodford, Four Roses, Wild Turkey and other more popular stops. We have had some success at places like James E Pepper, Barrel House/The Manchester Distillery District which has a brewery, cidery, a bourbon bar and two distilleries, Town and Branch, Castle and Key, Neeley Family, and some of the lesser knowns. We have been offering our Charter Service to folks as we know the area really well if they are able to secure their own tours. Tours are sold nearly 3 months in advance to the big distilleries. This is not ideal but we can get you down there in some form or fashion. Our local Northern Kentucky Tour to Boone County, Second Sight Spirits and New Riff/Bourbon Bars is fun too.

Kentucky bourbon is a local favorite and famous around the world and we are just a short drive to experience it firsthand with tastings and tours along the way. Activity FAQs

Is there food on the tour and is part of the Price.  

Yes, there is food on the tour at the different breweries, but it is not part of your tour price. We recommend you eat before AND plan to eat after, if you need food places, just ask us, most of us are Certified Tourism Ambassadors for the City of Cincinnati!

Where does it end? Exactly the same place you were picked up unless we are notified differently. People are free to jump off the tour anytime just as long as they notify the tour guide.

Is this a "Party Bus?" No it is not.. It is a tour. Even on the Private Events we pride ourselves on providing an entertaining fun venue for folks to learn about Cincinnati Brewing History, Craft Beer, Proper Tasting Techniques, etc.

We want everyone to have fun, but not at the expense of another guests experience and not at the sacrifice of our reputation with the local taprooms, wineries, bars or distilleries.

How many people do we need to do a tour? 1 person can book alone for our public tours, for our private tours we are looking for a minimum of 8 (you can have as little as you want on the bus, but you pay for 8 drinkers) on the weekend and 6 during the weekday/night, and a maximum of 200(if you have less just give us a call and we will do our best to find one)

What happens if the weather is too bad? Weather cancellations will be given a rain check/voucher for another date of their choice. For private functions we hold your deposit until you decide on another date.

Reservation changes, cancellations & refunds.

Changes to reservations for tickets can be made until 5 days prior to the date scheduled. Reservations may be re-scheduled by the operator of the activity due to reasons such as weather, minimum participation requirements, mechanical issues or other interruptions beyond their control.

All gift certificate sales are final and not refundable. Gift certificates can only be exchanged prior to redemption.

Cincinnati, a city whose beer history remains unknown to most of its loyal patrons, was one our countries top beer producers from the mid 1800's through prohibition. In fact, the beer industry accounted for almost 40% of our economy, producing nearly 1,000,000 barrels of beer per year at its peak.

Cincinnati Produced the most amount of wine in the Country in 1859 with Longworth's "Sparkling Catawba".

We had one of the largest concentrations of Distilleries and Saloons in the world!

How It Works

We have worked hard over the past three years to take the stress out of booking and planning tours. Here are the basics: • You pay for you and your group online or by calling us (513-258-7909, 844-Beer-Fun) • You arrive for your tour (hopefully hydrated and fed) at either The Rock Bar at Jack's Casino or The Growler House Bar, For Wine we meet at Maggiano's in Kenwood, and for Bourbon we meet at New Riff Bellevue or at Moerlein Malt House for the Underground tour. We can pick PRIVATE TOURS ONLY at their residence or outside location. • We check you in, we load the bus • On the Bus we narrate some fun Cincinnati Facts and Traditions • We go into the breweries where you will receive a souvenir glass to use for your beer we will pour 3 samples of beer at 5.5-6oz each sample so 16-18 ounces each location. Wine Wagon you get between 4-8 pours of wine at each location plus some small cheese and cracker snacks. On Bourbon Bus tour and tasting you get 2 distilleries with tastings and two bourbon bars with tastings. • We will go behind the scenes at the brewery, winery or distillery as long as they are not doing something back there that can get any of you injured. • We will repeat this process either 3 or 4 times depending on the tour you select (check the description) • We will then drop you off at your pickup location • Please use your best judgement and don't drink and drive. If you have been drinking, UBER it or use our Hotel code we provide.

We do private and public parties, company outings Monday through Sunday for our tours depending on availability of our partners.

Private Parties can select which locations they want to go to from the list of breweries we will provide you when you email us in.

Once we get everyone on the bus we will go to each brewery, winery or distillery/tasting bar and spend about 50 minutes sampling their goods, touring and learning about what makes them special.

The trip takes 3-3.5 Hours for a 3 brewery, distillery tour, and 4.5-5 hrs for a 4 brewery or winery tour.

Prices are as follows includes Samples of beer, around 3-4 samples at each brewery. (16-20 ounces)

Private tours from 8 people to 33 people are available (if you have less please call 513-258-7909).

Weekday or weekend. Private Tours pick their own breweries.

We also have trivia, prizes, history, and Giant Pretzel from Servatii's (Servatii Pretzel is Brewery Tour only)

Our private tours are completely ala-carte and you design the experience you wish for you and your group to have (pricing may vary Please do not go off of the pricing below to determine your private tour price because it could be more or less depending on what your group wants).
