What is cohousing?

Cohousing is a type of intentional, collaborative housing in which residents actively participate in the design and operation of their community. The building's physical design encourages both individual space and social contact. Private homes contain all the features of conventional homes, but residents also have access to extensive common facilities such as a courtyard, playroom, and a common house.

Hillsborough commissioners consider pulling $10M from affordable housing fund

Hillsborough leaders to discuss affordable housing.

FOX 13's Matthew McClellan reports on the latest discussions around affordable housing in Hillsborough County.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. - Hillsborough County's affordable housing crisis is expected to come into focus Thursday night when residents on opposing sides of a funding dispute bring their concerns before commissioners.

The county’s proposed FY 2025 budget, which is up for adoption Thursday night, includes $10 million in 'HOPE' funding, named for the local grassroots coalition that fought to pass the funding in 2019.

Since then, the Hillsborough Organization for Progress and Equality reports that the funding has led to 1,700 housing units being built overall, helping seniors and low income families.

But some argue those taxpayer dollars would be better spent elsewhere. In 2024, commissioners voted to funnel $8 million away from the housing fund to build roads and repair sidewalks within the county.

Now, the funding is on the chopping block again, with the board getting ready to hear recommendations on redistributing the money toward additional infrastructure projects.

Thursday's meeting is at 6 p.m. in the 2nd Floor Boardroom of the County Center at 601 E Kennedy Blvd, Tampa. It can be viewed online here . There will be a time for public comment, however, the signup window has now closed.

Senior cohousing provides a sense of community for active older adults.

Find Senior Cohousing Near You

Join 1,085,046 Seniors Who've Found Housing Communities on SeniorLiving.org.

One of the primary concerns for older adults is the loss of a sense of community. This can happen when you retire and no longer go to work every day, or when your adult children move away. Seniors who are unable to drive are often housebound and lose their connection to the community around them. If you fall into these categories and worry about maintaining social connections, for both practical and emotional reasons, senior cohousing is a great solution. Senior cohousing communities are designed to facilitate a strong communal bond with other residents. If you are an active senior interested in joining a tight-knit community, keep reading to learn more about senior cohousing.

Table of Contents

What is senior cohousing, who chooses to live in a senior cohousing community, can i live in senior cohousing if i have dementia or require a moderate level of care, how does a senior cohousing community get started, is senior cohousing available to low-income seniors, how to find senior cohousing near me.

socialize

Pro Tip: Unsure if a senior cohousing community is the right fit for you? Consult our guide to retirement communities to learn more about your options!

Cohousing communities are available to individuals of all ages. However, a senior cohousing community only permits residents over a certain age, such as 55 . This allows older adults to live in a community tailored to their needs. In senior communal living, residents are more likely to share the same common interests, hobbies, and goals. Seniors can spend more time on activities for older adults rather than activities more suited for families or younger adults. For example, seniors in a cohousing community aren’t responsible for providing child care or carpooling with other adults, as would be the case in a general cohousing community.

Older adults who previously lived in a general cohousing community will often transition to an elderly cohousing group. This way, they can maintain the same communal lifestyle while enjoying the unique benefits of a retirement community. However, anyone interested in being a part of a close community can benefit from senior cohousing. The ultimate goal of this type of community is to facilitate regular interaction among residents. This provides seniors with practical, social, economic, and environmental benefits, since every person is sharing resources.

Our free housing and care finder uses your unique needs to curate a list of the best options in your area.

housing co tour

A senior cohousing community is primarily focused on active seniors who can contribute to the community’s overall needs. While you have your own private home, you are also expected to help out with the functioning of the neighborhood. This might include cooking meals one day a week, providing landscaping for the neighborhood, or organizing group outings once a month.

Pro Tip: Want to learn more about finding care for seniors with dementia? Read our guide to dementia memory care .

Older adults who suffer from some form of dementia or lack mobility would not be able to provide this level of contribution. In addition, most senior cohousing communities are not designed to provide 24/7 monitoring and nursing care. While some senior communities might choose to include memory care or assisted living services for their residents, they are the exception, not the standard.

Are There Senior Cohousing Options for LGBTQ Seniors?

LGBTQ-Retirement-Communities

Yes, some cohousing communities cater to LGBTQ older adults! For example, Village Hearth Cohousing community in Durham, North Carolina, provides a welcoming community for LGBTQ seniors . Anyone who is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, or simply an ally of this community will find a safe haven within this type of communal living neighborhood. If you’re looking for even more LGTBQ-friendly housing options for seniors, you can also reach out to the SAGE senior advocacy group .

The biggest difference between a senior cohousing community and a retirement community, such as an independent living apartment or assisted living , is the way the neighborhood is organized. To start a community, its founding residents come together and decide how they want to construct the neighborhood. For most cohousing communities, the goal is to minimize the impact on the environment and maximize efficiency.

Did You Know? One of the biggest barriers to starting a senior cohousing community is acquiring the funding to design and develop senior-friendly neighborhoods. 1

For instance, rather than having a large lot size for each homeowner, there is typically no grassy space between homes. Instead, these houses are all connected using walking paths. Parking for cohousing communities is located on the periphery of the property, in a lot, which also improves the safety of the community and its residents. As a result, a cohousing community looks much different from a conventional neighborhood.

Once a group decides how they want to develop their senior cohousing community, each resident purchases an individual house or condo unit . These become part of a homeowners association that is managed by the cohousing community.

In some cohousing communities, affordable housing for seniors is available. For example, the first U.S. senior cohousing community, Silver Sage Village , has units that are permanently managed by the Boulder Housing Authority. These units are rated as affordable housing for seniors and are included in the Permanently Affordable Housing Program by the City of Boulder. 2 If you are looking for low-income senior cohousing in your state, contact individual communities to see if they have affordable housing available.

As of 2019, there were more than 295 cohousing communities throughout the United States, with as many as 45 senior cohousing communities either established or in development. 3 States that currently have a senior cohousing community or one under construction include:

  • North Carolina
  • West Virginia
  • Massachusetts
  • New Hampshire

New cohousing communities are popping up every year, so this isn't an exhaustive list. If your state isn’t on the list above, you can search online for “senior cohousing communities in [your state].” You can also use our senior housing directory . Simply type in your ZIP code, and we’ll provide a list of all the communities in your area based on your needs!

Depending on your lifestyle preferences, you can choose to live in a general cohousing community or one strictly for seniors. For instance, some older adults may want to live in a blended community that has more of a family structure, with residents of all ages. Others may be ready to transition to the quieter, slower pace of living of a senior community.

Jennifer aniston gave fans a rare glimpse of her $21m la mansion during her emmys glam session.

Before Jennifer Aniston graced the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards red carpet, she treated her 44.8 million Instagram followers to something far more exclusive: a rare, behind-the-scenes tour of her sprawling $21 million Los Angeles mansion.

The “Friends” star, known for keeping her private life under wraps, pulled back the curtain on her stunning midcentury-modern home, located in posh Bel Air, while getting ready for TV’s biggest night.

In the video, shared the day after the Emmys, Aniston offered a candid glimpse into her luxurious lifestyle, giving viewers a front-row seat to her jaw-dropping property. The estate, originally designed by famed architect A. Quincy Jones in 1965, boasts floor-to-ceiling windows, dark hardwood floors and modernist sculptures.

But it wasn’t always this warm.

In a video shared with her 44.8 million Instagram followers, the "Friends" star offered a rare glimpse inside her stunning midcentury-modern home,

After purchasing the home in 2011, Aniston brought in designer Stephen Shadley to revamp the space, adding earthy textures and personal touches to soften the mansion’s sleek aesthetic.

“Jen is drawn to wood, stone, and bronze, materials that have real substance and depth,” Shadley explained in an interview with Architectural Digest. “No matter how beautiful or glamorous something is, it has to be warm and inviting.”

In typical laid-back Aniston fashion, the video begins with a close-up of her breathtaking pearl-colored, strapless Oscar de la Renta gown before slowly panning across her luxurious living room.

As she paused to admire the space, fans got an eyeful of her home’s midcentury charm. And while her Emmy gown was undoubtedly a showstopper, her home, worth a reported $21 million, was the real scene-stealer.

The video showed Aniston gracefully wandering through her mansion, eventually stopping in the library — a highlight of her estate. With a floor-to-ceiling bookcase filled with gold-bound books, and a section reserved for the many awards she’s racked up over the years, the space epitomized the blend of Hollywood glam and cozy comfort.

Designed by legendary architect A. Quincy Jones, the mansion features floor-to-ceiling windows, dark hardwood floors, and modern artwork.

Among her trophies? The Emmy she won for her iconic role as Rachel Green on “Friends,” proudly on display alongside countless other accolades.

But it wasn’t all about showing off her enviable pad. Aniston’s down-to-earth nature shone through when she warmly embraced her longtime friend and “The Morning Show” producer, Kristin Hahn. Clad in a chic green dress, Hahn appeared to be just as at home in Aniston’s palace as the star herself.

During the pair’s heartfelt reunion in the library, viewers got to see them surrounded by luxe furnishings and a massive wall of windows.

In the video, Aniston gracefully moved through her chic home, showing off a jaw-dropping library complete with a floor-to-ceiling bookcase, shimmering gold-bound books, and a section devoted to her awards—including her Friends Emmy.

Of course, the tour wasn’t complete without a peek at Aniston’s ultra-luxe makeup station. Surrounded by lightbulb-framed mirrors straight out of a movie star’s dressing room, Aniston was seen getting her makeup and hair perfected before heading to the Emmys.

The grand finale came when Aniston and Hahn stepped through the mansion’s dramatic front entrance. The Emmy nominee made her exit through massive doors covered in eye-catching irregular gray stripes, making her way to the red carpet in style.

Jennifer Aniston arrives for the 76th Emmy Awards at the Peacock Theatre at L.A. Live in Los Angeles on September 15, 2024.

Aniston’s “The Morning Show” was a top contender at the Emmys, with her and co-star Reese Witherspoon both competing for the same award. However, it was Anna Sawai’s tearful win for “Shōgun” that snagged the night’s top acting prize, leaving Aniston and Witherspoon empty-handed.

Social Housing Goes to Washington

  • Back Issues

“Trumpism,” our fall issue, is out soon. Subscribe to our print edition today.

With the newly introduced Homes Act, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is pushing legislation to create the next generation of decommodified, dignified homes, including public housing and co-ops.

housing co tour

Every first of the month, half the country’s renters hand more than 30 percent of their wages to their landlord. A quarter of them pay a majority in rent — a tremendous cash transfer from bosses to landlords that leaves tenants broke, exploited, and mad as hell.

In cities, towns, rural areas, and reservations across the country, renters are organizing for lower rent and better conditions. Through long-established organizations and newly formed autonomous tenant unions, they are standing up to landlords, pushing for stronger rent controls , and proving the power of organized tenants. Though their demands vary from place to place, the words used to describe the vision for a better future are increasingly the same: “ social housing .”

In a country as large and diverse as the United States, it isn’t surprising that the precise meaning of those words varies somewhat from place to place, but in general, tenants are calling for housing that is decommodified, resident controlled, and widely accessible.

It can include rentals (like public housing , which is permanently affordable and outside the speculative market) and cooperatives (where residents own a share of their building but cannot profit much from its resale). It can be produced via new construction or by acquisition and conversion, as when a private rental building is bought by its tenants and turned into a limited-equity co-op.

But in all its variations, social housing is a far cry from our anti-social housing norm, in which homes are expected to generate monumental profits for their owners and disorganized tenants are subject to the petty tyranny of landlords.

Introducing the Homes Act

Up to now, organizing and legislative work for social housing has taken place at the city and state levels . For example, Seattle residents voted to create a municipal social housing developer, while the Rhode Island legislature opted to use COVID relief funds to create a state-level social housing program.

Today New York congressmember Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Minnesota senator Tina Smith have introduced new national legislation that, if passed and funded, would go a long way toward making real the social housing revolution.

The Homes Act of 2024 would create a Housing Development Authority (HDA) for the entire country. Housed under the federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) agency but operating autonomously, the HDA’s sole mission would be to build, buy, renovate, and operate social housing, which it defines as housing with public, nonprofit, or resident ownership; permanent protections and affordability; community control; and deep sustainability and accessibility. It would be governed by a board that includes not only expert appointees in housing and the environment but also its residents and members of the unions that build and support it.

The HDA would be a flexible vehicle, modeled after a 2020 Urban Democracy Lab report entitled “ The SHDA — A Proposal .” It could build social housing itself; it could buy anti-social housing and convert it into social housing, then operate it itself or pass it on to tenant, labor, or community groups; it could finance social housing projects operated by state and municipal housing agencies or Public Housing Authorities; or it could finance social housing projects initiated by tenant, labor, and community organizations or by Community Land Trusts .

While the mechanisms are flexible, the standards for housing are fairly strict. In order to achieve the goals of decommodification and fair housing, at least 40 percent of the homes it creates must be affordable for those with the lowest incomes (defined as 0 to 30 percent of the local Area Median Income, or AMI). Another 30 percent can be available to people under 80 percent of AMI. (For context, the average New York City household makes 71 percent of AMI.) The final 30 percent are not income-targeted at all.

Rents in social housing are set at 25 percent of renters’ incomes — 5 percentage points lower than the standard for “affordable housing” in the United States today, but in line with older norms about how much tenants should be expected to pay for housing. Rents cannot rise more than 3 percent or the annual Consumer Price Index, whichever is lower.

All housing would come with strong protections against discrimination and unwarranted eviction and would have elected tenant associations in every development. The homes would be built and maintained with strong labor standards, ensuring that there would be no union busting, independent contractor scams, or substandard wages in social housing. They would be held by the HDA in perpetuity, and neither the buildings nor the land could ever be privatized.

Under the Homes Act, broad swaths of tenants would have an explicit right and opportunity to convert their homes into social housing. In a section on “Community and Tenant Opportunity to Purchase,” the bill enables tenants in various kinds of federally backed housing to convert into a social housing model of tenants’ choosing whenever their building is up for sale, privatization, or demolition.

At the same time, the bill would build on Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders’s Green New Deal for Public Housing by repealing the dreaded “Faircloth Amendment” (which blocks federal funding for new public housing development beyond what already exists) and drawing funds to bring existing public housing into good and sustainable condition.

Taken together, the bill represents a bold platform for preserving, converting, and building social housing across the country. If it were funded at the level of the Mortgage Interest Deduction, our country’s single highest housing expenditure by a long shot, and one of our most regressive, it would produce between 1 million and 1.8 million green social homes over the course of a decade.

Policy Through Organizing

The housing system sketched out in the Homes Act looks nothing like what we are used to in the United States. Though we have an important social housing legacy , we have never normalized decommodification as the cornerstone of our housing system.

Introducing legislation like the Homes Act does not accomplish that goal in and of itself, but it offers us a concrete depiction of what that transition could look like. It also highlights the severe disjuncture between what our housing and urban planning system does right now — promote private profits in real estate while minimizing the public provision of housing — and what we need it to do.

The goal of legislation like this is not to pass it immediately, since no sober person would expect the current US Congress to line up in support. Nor is the goal to supplant the messy work of organizing with the schematic and technical language of legislation. Instead, the point is to inspire organizing: to show that the status quo is not the only way our housing could operate, to give tenant organizations a concrete and affirmative vision to build toward, and to offer socialist candidates for office a platform to run on.

Only through mass organizing can legislation like the Homes Act move from a distant vision into an imminent reality. And it is only because of the mass organizing that is already happening that a bill like this is being introduced today.

The campaign to open a full-service grocery in the northeast Denver neighborhood that’s now considered a food desert has now grown into a $97 million project that also includes affordable housing, an arts education and cultural center, a small business accelerator and mental health services office.

People have started moving into a 97-unit apartment building built on an abandoned Regional Transportation District Park-n-Ride lot. A nonprofit grocery store is expected to open in a strip mall next to the apartments early next year. The groundbreaking for a 16,000-square-foot cultural center in a section of the mall’s parking lot will likely occur later in 2025.

And the Montbello Organizing Committee , known as MOC and representing the neighborhood’s residents, will own all of the community buildings.

“This is not some big corporate thing. These are neighbors coming together and saying, ‘Hey, this is what we want. This is what we need. Now, how do we do it?’ ” said Vernon Jones, pastor of the United Church of Montbello and MOC board member.

The fallout from Montbello’s loss of a major grocery store helped inform why the state is fighting the proposed consolidation of Kroger and Albertson Cos., said Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser. It was one of the stories he heard from Coloradans when touring the state to hear from people about the merger.

“One consequence, as in Montbello, is a food desert concern,” said Weiser, who filed a lawsuit in February to challenge the grocery chains’ plan.

Kroger, parent company of King Soopers and City Market, and Albertsons, which owns Safeway, say teaming up will help them compete better against grocery giants Walmart and Costco. Colorado’s case is set for trial beginning Sept. 30 in Denver District Court.

The effort to improve Montbello residents’ access to healthy food is tied to other needs in the community, Jones said.

“The community survey exposed some holistic needs. People not only needed a place to eat, they needed affordable places to live,” said Jones, whose family has lived in Montbello since the 1960s. “We know that all across our city, people are being displaced. I think that almost every neighborhood I can remember growing up looks different because housing prices are going up.”

“Community-inspired and community-led”

Planning for what MOC has named the FreshLo Hub began in 2017. Montbello’s plan was one of 26 initiatives nationwide selected by the Kresge Foundation to focus on improving access to food, arts and culture in low-income areas and communities of color.

The basis for the plan was feedback from Montbello residents, said Donna Garnett, the CEO of MOC. She lives in neighboring Green Valley Ranch.

The Montbello neighborhood’s population of 41,000 is 63% Hispanic, 17% Black and 12% white, with the rest other ethnicities. Twenty-eight percent of the residents are foreign-born, double the statewide rate, according to MOC.

With $75,000 from Kresge and grants from the Denver and Colorado Health foundations, the community group sponsored public meetings and went into neighborhoods to get input.

“Our staff got on the bus. We stood outside the Family Dollar store. We asked people, ‘What do you want in our community? What would make a difference for you, your family?’ ” Garnett said.

(Photo by RJ Sangosti/The Denver Post)

Approximately 2,500 people took part. The project has three phases: affordable housing, the grocery store and the FreshLo Arts Education Center. Money for the work has come from several sources, including federal Low-Income Housing and New Markets tax credit programs.

“Because it was community-inspired and community-led, there have been investors, foundations and governments that have been eager to support this project,” Garnett said.

The organization will work to maintain the trust of the community and backers, Garnett said. There will be annual reviews to ensure that the businesses and services are delivering what the community wants.

“The investors are holding us accountable as well for that,” Garnett said.

FLO Development Services and MOC are co-developers of the FreshLo Hub. The general contractors are Gilmore Construction Corp. and Alliance Construction Solutions. Roybal Corp. and Van Meter Williams Pollack are the architects and engineers involved.

Other partners include the Colorado Black Arts Movement, S.B. Clark Financial Services, WellPower — formerly the Mental Health Center of Denver — and Daily Table, a nonprofit grocery store chain out of the Boston area.

Construction began after MOC bought the old RTD Park-n-Ride site for $750,000. Garnett said that, although the adjacent strip mall wasn’t for sale, MOC made an offer.

“They countered and ultimately, in December of 2023, we closed” the deal, Garnett said. “The entire FreshLo campus is a little over 3 acres.”

The community group paid $5.6 million for the mall, which houses a Subway restaurant, a laundry, a barber shop and a Mexican restaurant. Of the $97 million price tag for the entire development, MOC still needs to raise $10 million.

“We always say that everything takes longer than you thought it would. You can’t do it by yourself, and in the end it will be worth it,” Garnett said.

Locally sourced, locally run grocery store

Besides being a food desert, Garnett said, Montbello is a transportation desert and mental health desert. In addition to shutting down the Park-n-Ride site along Peoria Street, RTD eliminated some bus routes a few years ago.

“RTD put some routes back in place, but made the time between buses longer. That had an impact on people’s ability to get where they needed to go,” Garnett said.

Montbello’s most densely populated areas are 4 to 6 miles from full-service grocery stores, Garnett said. Under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s definition of a food desert , Montbelllo meets the criteria, she said.

The USDA considers the poverty rate and access to healthy, affordable food as part of its definition. In an urban area, the description applies when at least 500 people and/or at least 33% of the population lives more than 1 mile from a supermarket or large grocery store.

Garnett said MOC talked to national grocery chains about opening a store in Montbello and was told the neighborhood didn’t meet their criteria, including education levels.

“Education level can translate into income,” she said.

According to MOC, Montbello’s higher education level is about 16.5%, roughly a third of that in other parts of metro Denver. The neighborhood’s poverty rate is approximately 20% higher than the statewide rate and a quarter of the residents experience food insecurity.

However, a 2018 market survey by MOC found that Montbello residents were spending “an extraordinary amount of money” on groceries in other parts of Denver, which Garnett believed meant the community could support a supermarket.

(Rendering provided by the Colorado Black Arts Movement) The 16,000-square-foot FreshLo Hub Arts Education Center will be part of $97 million community project in Denver's Montbello neighborhood. Work on the project began when residents wanted to bring back a full-service grocery store to the area and includes affordable housing and a mental health services facility.

Daily Table , a Boston-area nonprofit started by a former president of the grocer Trader Joe’s, agreed to work with MOC. Willie Shepherd, who is with Flo Development and manages the strip mall, said the grocery store is expected to open in a 5,200-square-foot space in the first quarter of 2025.

“There will be staples that reflect the community as well as grab-and-go items that you can get for lunch or take home for dinner. It will all be reasonably priced for people in this community,” Shepherd said.

A consultant hired by the FreshLo Hub used to be Daily Table’s chief operating officer. The Montbello store will use Daily Table’s model but have its own grocer-operator. Shepherd said the store will work with local suppliers and hire as many people from the community as possible.

“There will be input from the community, not just the residents of the Hub (apartments), but the whole community to make sure we’re meeting the needs of the different ethnicities of the people we’ll be serving,” Shepherd said.

“This is just the beginning.”

Dianne Cooks is among the many people in the middle of moving into the FreshLo Hub apartment building at Peoria Street and East Albrook Drive. She has lived in Montbello for 40 years and said the new affordable housing is vital to people like her.

“It’s so important because you don’t have to leave your community to go somewhere else to live that’s affordable. You can stay in your own community and that’s a big deal,” Cooks said. “All my kids, nieces and nephews live in Montbello. I have community ties here. I have family ties here.”

Cooks, a MOC board member for a year, is moving into a one-bedroom apartment that complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act. A third-party property manager has been hired who has experience with the rules around federal affordable housing programs.

This is a three-bedroom apartment at the new FreshLo Hub, a community development being built that will include affordable housing, retail, and a independent grocery store in the Montbello neighborhood, in Denver on Aug. 14, 2024. (Photo by RJ Sangosti/The Denver Post)

In August, Garnett and Tony Iglesias from DAE Group, the construction project manager, took visitors on a tour of the apartment building, which has five floors of units ranging from one to three bedrooms.

A coffee shop, a small-business accelerator and office spaces will take up one half of the ground floor. The other half will house the WellPower mental health space. The second floor has a fitness center, a community kitchen and dining space, as well as an area that can be partitioned off for events.

Through the doors is a deck with tables, a fire pit, grills, playground equipment, raised garden beds, shades and chairs.

“It’s a beautiful deck for us to have family time or just time for getting to know our neighbors,” Cooks said.

The parking garage has electric-vehicle chargers. MOC has initiatives to address climate change, Garnett said.

MOC board member Jones said he drives by the apartment building every morning he takes his daughter to school.

“Every day I get to be inspired by what’s possible, not just in our community but in the world,” Jones said. “We hope we’re able to do more to keep families here who’ve been here for generations, families that want to raise their kids in Montbello like they were raised in Montbello.

“I don’t think this will be the last that we seek to do. This is just the beginning,” he added.

The suites are considered those living areas in the Zinfandel and Verdot Village. They have a bathroom area and common living area, but no kitchen.

Each residence is furnished with an extra long twin size bed, desk, desk chair, clothes closet, and chest of drawers. Most mattresses are 80" long by 38" wide by 6" high. Bedrooms have an overhead fluorescent light, but no study lamps. All of the windows are covered by mini-blinds or drapes.

Living Room

The living room is carpeted and furnished with a sofa, easy chair, coffee table, end table, and table lamp. All of the windows and sliding patio doors are either draped or covered by mini-blinds.

The bath area is divided into a dressing area with two sinks, separate toilet area, a tub/shower room, and a storage closet. There are two separate bath areas in the four bedroom units. Some showers may only be a shower stall and not a tub/shower combination.

For your convenience, we have published the approximate dimensions of the suites, apartments, and furniture. Some floor plans have variations, so again these are approximations and are not true for every room. If there are variations, we have published the smaller dimension.

How do I visit a cohousing community?

Most cohousing communities welcome visitors. Cohousers tend to be proud of their communities and eager for more people to learn about cohousing.  Some communities host scheduled tours (which can be found here [link] or on the community’s website), while others are glad to set something up with individuals. If you don’t see anything on the community’s website, reach out by email and ask how you can visit them. One great way to visit cohousing communities is to attend a conference which includes a tour of multiple communities.

Are there events where I can meet people who live in cohousing?

Yes. Cohousing conferences and regional gatherings are great places to meet people. CohoUS sponsors an annual open house day with many communities participating. Some communities hold events from time to time throughout the year. Check out our events calendar [link] or check with the community you are interested in for more details.

Can I join a forming community in a different state?

How do i know if a community is the right fit for me.

While some folks are lucky enough to find a great community for them right away, a surer bet is to take time to do your homework.  Visit as many communities as you can before you commit to one. Even communities that are outside the region you want to live in will help you define what is important to you about community.  Take time to read the Cohousing-L listserv as well as the information on this website. From there, use the Community Listing to review websites. The more communities you learn about, the more you will know what you are looking for.  Once you have a few in mind, spend time with them. Most communities will welcome you to work days, common meals and business meetings as you get acquainted. They want it to be a good fit as much as you do. The more particular you are, the more time you will need to invest to find the community that will work for you.  Keep in mind that there likely isn’t a perfect fit. Sharing resources makes everyone richer overall, but also means no one gets everything just the way they want it.

Cohousing.org is an ever-evolving, community supported website.

If you see information that is missing or inaccurate, we welcome your suggestions.

Content on this page is curated to make the website as attractive and useful as possible. All cohousers are invited to submit articles, stories and resources which are displayed on the page appropriate for the topic.

Local News | Huntington Beach council approves Magnolia Tank Farm housing project

housing co tour

The project has worked through approvals for years; Tuesday’s vote accepts changes the California Coastal Commission approved in July , including setting aside some affordable rentals among the housing units for hotel workers.

“We are grateful to the city of Huntington Beach for their support of this project, which we believe will be a fantastic addition to the city, brightening this historically blighted stretch of the coast,” Bill Shopoff, CEO of Shopoff Realty, which owns the site, said in a statement.

The nearly beachfront project – it is just 2,000 feet from the shoreline – will see around 200 for-sale homes built, as well as a 50-unit affordable housing complex, which will set aside half of its units for hotel workers, a 215-room hotel and 19,000 square feet of retail space. Shopoff said in July that the earliest homes could finish construction is 2027.

The hotel would have 25% of its rooms set aside to be rented out at affordable rates.

That historically blighted coast Shopoff referred to is the oil storage tanks the site once housed. It is still broadly called the Magnolia Tank Farm.

Mauricio Escobar, a geologist and consultant for the project, said oil wells built at the site in the mid-1950s were abandoned in 1972 before the 25 million-gallon oil tanks were built. The site was remediated in recent years to clear its soil of contamination, Escobar said.

Escobar said the state Department of Toxic Substances Control has issued a clean closure letter allowing homes to be built.

Next door is also the former Ascon Landfill , which received industrial waste until 1984. A cleanup of the property is underway.

A Department of Toxic Substances Control official told the Coastal Commission in July that the Ascon Landfill is not releasing containments outside of its boundaries. Remediation is expected to take until 2026.

Some residents and local environmental activists sought to never see the Magnolia Tank Farm property developed, raising concerns about the site’s proximity to Ascon and potential risks of future sea level rise.

Ray Hiemstra, associate director of policy and projects for Orange County Coastkeeper, raised those concerns in a letter to the City Council urging them to reject the project and look at other sites to build housing.

The City Council first approved the project in 2021, but needed to vote on it again to accept the changes made at the Coastal Commission meeting.

“We have some of the strictest environmental safety laws in the world here in California,” Councilmember Tony Strickland said Tuesday. “If this passed state muster, you can be assured that it is safe.”

The project taking years to get required approvals is a good example of why housing is so expensive in the state, Strickland said.

Councilmember Pat Burns called the Magnolia Tank Farm project a responsible development. Burns said he looked for a reason to say no to the project and asked opponents to provide counter evidence regarding the site’s risk of exposing people to toxic chemicals.

“Nobody could give me anything,” Burns said. “It was more emotion.”
