How to Do a Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech + Best Tours

Looking for what it’s doing going on a Sahara tour, plus the best Sahara desert tours from Marrakech? Read on for the details!

A line of 5 camels climbs along the ridge of a sand dune in the distance, led by a lone person walking in front.

Of all the places we went to in Morocco, I was most excited to visit the Sahara – it was absolutely a top bucket list item for me!

The way that the sand dunes start rising out of the desert as you approach Merzouga, knowing that in front of you is the Sahara Desert , and you’re going to be riding a camel through it , is absolutely priceless.

I’m so happy to say that the visit lived up to or even exceeded our high expectations and this was one of my favorite travel experiences to date. I loved this experience so much, and it is absolutely worth the time, energy, and effort it takes to make it out to the Sahara to experience it yourself.

I want you to have as fantastic of an experience in the Sahara Desert of Morocco as we did, so in this post, I’m sharing everything you need to know about doing a Sahara desert tour, as well as some top tour options from Marrakech.

What to Expect on Your Sahara Desert Experience

Every desert tour follows a very similar itinerary. If you’re leaving from Marrakech, you’ll be picked up from your hotel or riad in an air-conditioned van to start the 8+ hour long drive out to the Sahara. You’ll be with a friendly, kind, helpful, and engaging guide , and spending time with your local guide will be a highlight of the trip.

The first day, you’ll only drive partway out, as you’ll also be making some interesting stops along the way. These stops usually include Ait Ben Haddou (a super cool fortified ton on a hill that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site ) and/or Ouarzazate , a desert city known for its film studios.

You’ll usually stop for the night near either the Todra Gorge or Dades Valley , two beautiful areas filled with stunning rock formations and small villages. The tour includes your accommodation for the night here.

On Day 2, you’ll continue out to Merzoua, the town on the edge of the Sahara sand dunes. Depending on the exact tour itinerary, you might make another stop along the way, or you may spend some time in the Todra or Dades Gorges before starting your journey in the morning.

When you arrive in the town of Merzouga on the evening of the second day, you’ll meet up with your desert camp hosts, and ride a camel into the Sahara . It will take about 1.5 hours to reach your camp on the other side of the Erg Chebbi dunes. You’ll watch the magnificent desert sunset from the sand dunes, either in the middle of the dunes, or right at camp .

When you arrive in camp, you’ll find your tent where you’ll spend the night – these are not your typical pop up camping tents – they are well-designed, sturdy, and roomy tents, with running water, a bathroom, and electricity.

A typical Sahara desert tour luxury camp at night - a line of long, skinny, red carpets make a pathway down the center of the camp, with lanterns placed alongside the carpets. Tan, square shaped tents with a pointed top line linel the carpet, and greenery is planted at intervals.

Then, enjoy a delectable hot dinner at camp – this dinner will be as delicious as anything you’ve eaten in Morocco!

After dinner, the Berber men will make a fire and play traditional music around the flames, and then you will definitely want to go watch the stars in the middle of the dunes!

Day 3 (and 4)

On Day 3, you’ll enjoy a fantastic breakfast in the dunes. You may have time to go sandboarding or ATVing in the dunes, depending on the tour.

If you’re doing a 3-day tour, you’ll leave by early to mid-morning to head back to Merzouga, get in the vans, and head back to Marrakech or continue to Fes . If you’re doing a 4-day tour, you’ll get an extra day to enjoy the desert.

My Top Tip For Choosing a Sahara Desert Tour

My biggest tip for visiting Morocco is to spend a full day in the Sahara. While you absolutely can have a great experience doing just the overnight, I think if you’re going to spend all that time getting out to the desert, you should stay and play a while. This is what we did, and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Both of the 4 day tours that I recommend in the list below (#4 and #5 on the list) give you a full day to explore and play in the desert.

Important Things to Know Before You Book

Booking your tour in advance vs booking in marrakech.

Considering booking a tour in Marrakech? You have two options: book in advance online or find a tour operator in the city and negotiate a price.

Booking on arrival lets you haggle for a lower price. However, there’s a trade-off. Online tour companies value their reputation and customer reviews, which often translates to a better experience. In contrast, a tour booked last-minute in the city’s souks may not prioritize this, potentially affecting your experience.

This may be a particularly good choice for solo female travelers. To avoid unwanted attention from guides, it’s safer to book your Sahara desert tour online, where companies are more likely to focus on ensuring a great experience and securing positive reviews.

Small Group Tour vs Private Tour

This one is really down to personal preference, and what’s available for the itinerary you want. I could only find private tours for the 4-day tours, for example.

If you’re doing a 3-day tour, though, you have the choice between private and small group. While I used to hate hate hate any type of group tour (there was one tour we did in Cozumel where I felt like we and 500 other people were being herded and shuffled through the streets of Mexico together. I hated this and it put me off of any type of group tour for a long time), I’ve come to really, really enjoy a quality small-group tour.

While it’s certainly a bit of a toss-up as to what type of people you’ll be with, we’ve now done a ton of small group tours in many countries we’ve visited, and we’ve loved getting to know and bonding with other travelers. It’s overwhelmingly been a positive experience.

Getting to hang out with other travelers from around the world now often ends up being a highlight of our trips!

What to Pack for the Sahara Desert

Headscarf:  These really are helpful to protect your head from the sun, wind, and sand (plus they just make you look so legit.) You can buy one in any marketplace in Morocco for around 50 dirhams ($5) – plus it makes a great souvenir from Morocco to bring home with you.

The guides will help you tie the scarf in their traditional style.

Loose fitting pants/shorts : You’ll definitely want pants of some kind for riding camels, and loose fitting is the way to go to beat the heat. I wore a pair of pants I bought in Marrakech – you can find this style all over the city.

Dress, kaftan or djallaba : Kaftan and djallabas are traditional Moroccan clothing (long “dress”-like outfits that both men and women wear) and are a great thing to pick up if you want to look SUPER legit in the desert.

Matthew is wearing a kaftan in our camel pictures and he looks absolutely bomb. (Wear shorts underneath and then hike up the kaftan a little bit – it wasn’t hard for him to sit on the camel wearing that outfit).

Jacket : The Sahara can get chilly at night, even if it’s 90 F during the day. I’d definitely bring a light jacket if you’re visiting during the spring or summer. If you’re visiting during the winter, nights get quite cold (lows in the 30’s and 40’s) so I’d bring a heavier coat and possibly other winter gear (hat, gloves).

Sunscreen : No explanation necessary here, but definitely don’t forget this. Matthew always uses  this sunscreen stick , and I wear this facial  sunscreen for sensitive skin  everyday.

Something for motion sickness : No matter what mode of transportation you choose to arrive in the desert, you’re going to have to ride on the winding roads of Morocco. These roads made me suuuuuuuuper nauseous (I actually  threw up out the window  as we were going through switchbacks in the Atlas Mountains).

All that to say, I’d definitely recommend something for motion sickness.

While  dramamine  is a tried and true option, I recently tried out the  Relief Band for motion sickness  and it has worked impressively well!

An E-Sim Card: I like having fast, high speed data when we’re traveling out of the country, and I recently started using e-sim cards – they’re convenient, cheap, and really reliable. I’ve bought my e-sims from SimOptions.com for my past several trips and it’s been a great service!

Sahara Desert Tours FAQs

Can you do a day trip to the sahara desert from marrakech.

It takes approximately 8-9 hours to get to Merzouga from Marrakech or Fes, requiring quite a bit of time and effort to get out to the desert. So, it is definitely not possible to do a daytrip to the Sahara desert from Marrakech, you’ll for sure need the 3 days to do a desert tour justice.

The extra time is totally worth it though!

(However, if you really, truly only have time for a daytrip, check out these 10 best day trips from Marrakech )

What is the Best Month to Visit the Sahara?

Unsurprisingly, the Sahara Desert gets hot, very hot, during the summer months. Between May-September, highs are in the mid-90’s to over 100 degrees F (35-40 C), and lows are between 70-80 F (20-25 C).

Highs during winter can range generally average in the 60’s-70’s (15-20 C), with lows in the low 40’s (4 C). Definitely bring some warm coats, warm pajamas, a beanie, and some gloves if you’re visiting in winter – there’s no heating in the tents.

Undoubtedly, the best time to visit the Sahara desert is during the spring and fall, when the temperatures are milder and the heat isn’t as intense. However, you can have a good time in the Sahara desert at any time of year, you just need to be prepared for the weather that you’ll be experiencing.

Is It Worth Going to the Sahara Desert?

A woman in a white shirt and long red skirt sits on a sand dune in the Sahara, looking behind her innto the distance, as the sun rises on the horizon.

One million percent, yes! It is absolutely worth the time and effort in your Morocco itinerary to go out to the Sahara. This surreal and epic bucket list adventure will be one you never forget!

Ait Benhaddou is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and with one look at this ancient city, you can see why. Approximately dating back to the 17 th century, this mudbrick ksar is an example of pre-Saharan natural construction that once served as a Sahara trading post. It’s since been revived by Hollywood, so you might just recognise it from some pretty big films – does The Mummy , Lawrence of Arabia or Gladiator ring any bells? Before leaving, you’ll be treated to a delicious meal courtesy of the women of the Tawesna Association at a nearby teahouse.

Where is the Sahara Desert?

The Sahara Desert is located in North Africa. It spans a mighty 9,200,000 square kilometres across 10 countries, including Morocco, Egypt, Mali and Libya. It's the world's largest hot desert, and the third-largest desert after Antarctica and the Arctic.

What's the weather like in the Sahara Desert?

As a desert region, the Sahara can experience extreme weather. Winter (December to February) can be very cold, with overnight temperatures dropping to 5°C or lower. You'll need a sleeping bag, thermals, a scarf, gloves and a warm jacket for travel in winter. Oh, and be prepared for cold showers at your desert camp!

Summer (June to September) can be very hot with intense temperatures that can reach the high 40°Cs. This might be too uncomfortable for those not used to the heat. It’s super important to use sun protection and stay hydrated. That said, the desert can still get pretty chilly at night when the sun goes down, so you'll need a fleece to rug up.

Spring (March to May) sees the arrival of strong winds and there is an increased risk of sandstorms in April – but don't worry, your leader will always check the forecast beforehand to see if it's safe to stay in the desert.

When is the best time to visit the Sahara Desert?

The best time to visit the Sahara Desert is during the spring months between March to May, as well as the autumn months of October and November. During these times, the desert temperatures are hot but manageable and the nights don’t get quite as cold. Although one thing to note is that between January to May there is usually a higher number of sandstorms recorded, especially in April.

What clothing should I wear in the Sahara Desert?

What to pack will differ slightly depending on the time of year and the activities you'll be doing. But below are the basics you'll need:

  • Light scarf or face mask can be handy for preventing you from inhaling desert dust
  • Sun hat – wide-brimmed, ideally, to protect your face and head from the sun's rays and strong winds
  • Sunscreen – when you're in the desert, it goes without saying!
  • Small daypack for day trips and excursions
  • Light, loose-fitting pants
  • Joggers or jeans for camel rides
  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Fleece – for all seasons
  • Warm layers (for winter trips) – you'll need thermals, gloves, a woolly hat and a fleece to rug up as the temperatures can drop to below freezing at night
  • Small head torch – handy for going to the bathroom at night
  • Thongs (flip flops) for camp
  • Hiking shoes or runners

What animals live in the Sahara Desert?

The Sahara Desert is one of the fiercest environments for animal life. The mammals that live in the Sahara range from Saharan cheetahs, dromedary camels and desert foxes to gazelles, ostrich, hyrax and African wild dogs. Reptile life includes the desert crocodile, sand viper and the desert monitor. Other common species include the deathstalker scorpion and the Saharan silver ant as well as over 90 species of birds.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance for a Sahara Desert tour?

You sure do. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their tour. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Our Sahara desert tour have you rising early. Leaving Marrakech desert tours at 8am, you’ll be travelling toward the town of Ouarzazate passing through the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass. The highest road passage in Morocco at an altitude of 2260m. Take in the picturesque landscapes and breathe in the clean air of the High Atlas Mountains, as we pass through scenic Berber villages in the region. Our Sahara Desert tours allow you to learn about Morocco’s rich history – they aren’t just about the searing heat of the sands. Explore the  UNESCO  World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou, a well-preserved fortress city that has provided inspiration and filming locations for films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator.

Travelling further, our Sahara excursion will continue along the Road of One Thousand Kasbahs to the Skoura Oasis, before visiting the Valley of the Roses (Kelaa M’Gouna), birthplace of the most beautiful and fragrant flowers in the world. Don’t leave here without browsing the range of creams, soaps and rose water available. We’ll then pass through the Tamnalt Hills with their strange rock formations before arriving at our first campsite, the Dades Gorge.

Day 2: Dades Gorge – Todra Gorge – Merzouga – Erg Chebbi

After breakfast, our team will take you to Todra Gorge, another nearby formation that’s also Morocco’s highest altitude oasis. Consisting of ochre-coloured cliffs 300 metres high, the narrowest portions of Todra Gorge are only 20 metres wide. Heading towards the small oasis of Merzouga – the launching point for thousands of Sahara Desert tours. Located at the base of the Erg Chebbi dunes, here you’ll meet your camels and guides waiting to take you over the dunes on one of the world’s most exhilarating desert trips. Walking out over the dunes at sunset is a breath-taking experience, and one no Sahara excursion would be complete without.

After two hours travelling on camel back, you’ll reach camp with a dinner of tagine and refreshing mint tea. Rest here under the stars in a traditional nomad tent in one-of-a-kind accommodation.

Day 3: Erg Chebbi – Merzouga – Nekob – Marrakech (end of Marrakech desert tours)

On the final day of our Marrakech desert tours, we like to offer adventurers the chance to see a dune sunrise. Returning to Merzouga, your next destination will be the ancient city of Rissani. An important historical stop on any Sahara excursion, Rissani is where the Arab dynasties first entered Morocco. Speak to the local Saharan people – easy to spot in their traditional indigo robes.

From here our party will travel toward the Sarhro volcanic mountains. Featuring striking rock formations and panoramic views including Draa Valley, the largest oasis in Morocco. Traversing the High Atlas Mountains and the pass, you’ll be back home in Marrakech in the evening.

Extended Sahara desert tour from Marrakech desert tours over 4 days and 3 nights

Day 1: marrakech – ouarzazate – zagora  .

Your Sahara excursion begins in the morning with our guides driving the party through the High Atlas Mountains. We like to begin our desert trips crossing the Tizi-n-Tichkpa pass – at over two kilometres above sea level it is the highest mountain pass in Morocco. On the way, we’ll stop at Ait Benhaddou, a well-preserved kasbah made famous by several movies filmed nearby – including Lawrence of Arabia.

Travelling across luxurious palm groves, and the oases of Draa Valley, our Sahara Desert tours party will arrive at our final destination of the day – Zagora – early in the afternoon. Marvel at the ancient library of Tamegroute, the oldest in Africa and containing texts as old as the 13th century. Browse local pottery sellers and make sure to take note of the natural green tint of henna in the pieces.

Day 2: Zagora – Alnif – Errisani – Erg Chebbi

Finally reach Ouarzazate, the Hollywood of Morocco.

Day 4: Ouarzazate – Ait benhaddou – Telouet – Marrakech

This morning will explore  kasbah of Taourirt. This was one of the homes of Pasha Glaoui. In your Sahara desert trips in morocco, you will travel by the largest film production center of Morocco and if you like, continue to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou. This Kasbah is perhaps the most impressive and well-preserved fortress cities in Morocco, which the Moroccan Government itself jumped on the bandwagon. The Kasbahs were a major stop for camel caravans carrying salt through the Sahara and returning with gold, silver and slaves.

We will visit the Kasbah of Telouet which was occupied by the Pacha Glaoui during his reign and is frequented by Moroccan travellers. It sits in the village of Telouet nestled outside the Onilla Valley. The Harem and reception hall areas give one a good idea of the former luxury in which El Glaoui lived, as well as a look at the Andalusian style of decorating. However, the older parts of the Kasbah are in complete ruins, making it difficult to see properly. Walking through the crumbling passageways is like walking through a maze, and some have gotten lost exploring the dilapidated Kasbah. Enjoy the spectacular sights of mountains and valleys while travelling to Marrakech desert tours.

All along the way in the excursion to the Sahara, you can enjoy the scenery of Berber villages, mountains and valleys. Take the pleasure of the extraordinary Atlas Mountains – Kasbah Telouet. This Kasbah owned by the powerful Glaoui, popularly known as “vulture” sultan, and his son who stayed there till 1950. Though it was once a gorgeous Kasbah, today still it is worth visiting because of the drama and history that it unfolds.

Then you can either travel along the main road or take an off road through Ounila Valley. This alternate Sahara desert tours route will offer astounding views of rivers, lush valleys and remarkably colored hillsides and slopes. Next, visit the astonishing UNESCO-protected Kasbah Ait Benhaddou of the 16th century. You can walk through or ride on a donkey to cross the river and reach Kasbah. Move along the windy streets to reach the upper level of Kasbah for breathtaking views. Then, move towards Ouarzazate.

Day 2: Ouarzazate – Zagora – M’hamid – Sahara Erg Chigaga

After breakfast, our desert trips party will visit Erg Chigaga passing by Tamnougalt, the oasis containing palm trees and over 100 diverse types of dates. Green pottery of Tamegroute with its chief characteristic and ancient techniques provide infinite variations to the glaze. Upon leaving the Saharan village, M’hamid, drive along an off-road of about 60km and reach Erg Chigaga Dunes. You have to cross Hamadas and can explore the wonders of the Moroccan desert. Safety is another key benefit, as guides are familiar with local customs and can offer assistance in emergencies. Travellers can also maximise their time by having itineraries planned for them, ensuring they don’t miss top attractions. Finally, guided tours foster a sense of community, allowing participants to connect with fellow travellers and share experiences, making the journey more enriching and enjoyable.

Are Morocco Group Tours a cost-effective way to explore the country?

Morocco Group Tours can be a cost-effective way to explore the country, depending on your travel preferences and priorities. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Shared Costs: Group tours often distribute expenses such as transportation, accommodation, and guides among the participants, making it more cost-effective per person compared to solo travel or private tours.
  • Negotiated Rates : Tour operators may negotiate special rates for group bookings, potentially resulting in lower overall costs.
  • Economies of Scale: Larger groups can benefit from economies of scale, leading to reduced per-person expenses.
  • Inclusions: Group tours typically include essential elements like accommodation, transportation, and some meals in the overall price, simplifying budget planning.
  • Guided Experiences: Group tours provide the advantage of knowledgeable guides who can enhance your understanding of Morocco’s culture, history, and attractions.
  • Social Experience: Travelling in a group allows you to share costs, experiences, and social interactions, adding to the value of your trip.

However, it’s essential to consider your travel style and preferences. Group tours may have fixed itineraries and limited flexibility compared to independent travel. If you prefer a more customised experience or specific activities, a private tour or solo travel might be a better fit.

Ultimately, the cost-effectiveness of Morocco Group Tours depends on your budget, travel goals, and the specific tour package you choose. It’s advisable to compare options, consider what’s included, and assess your priorities to determine if a group tour aligns with your preferences and budget.

How can I find the best Morocco Tour Package for my budget?

When you are looking to find the best Morocco Tour Package within your budget, consider the following steps and points:

  • Express Your Budget Clearly: Begin by clearly stating your budget. This will help us understand your financial constraints and narrow down suitable options.
  • Specify Your Preferences: Share your preferences and priorities for the tour, such as the duration of the trip, destinations you’d like to visit, and any specific experiences you’re interested in (e.g., cultural tours, desert adventures, or historical sites).
  • Ask for Recommendations: Request recommendations based on your budget and preferences. We can provide insights into which packages align with your goals.
  • Inquire About Inclusions: Understand what is included in the tour package, such as accommodation, meals, transportation, and guided tours. Make sure it aligns with your budget expectations.
  • Request Customisation: If you find a package that interests you but needs slight adjustments to fit your budget, ask if customisation is possible. We are often able to tailor the package to better suit your needs.
  • Clarify Additional Costs: Be sure to inquire about any additional costs that may arise during the tour, such as entrance fees, optional activities, or tips, so you can budget accordingly.
  • Compare Options: Don’t hesitate to ask for multiple options within your budget range. Comparing different packages can help you make an informed decision.
  • Ask About Discounts: Check if there are any available discounts or promotions that can further optimise your budget.
  • Request Itinerary Details: Seek a detailed itinerary for each proposed package to ensure it aligns with your interests and expectations.
  • Seek Reviews and References: Ask for reviews or references from other travellers who have booked similar packages with Moroccan Journeys to gauge the quality of our service.

By following these steps, we can work together to find the ideal Morocco Tour Package that suits your budget and travel preferences.

Want to visit Morocco’s Sahara Desert? The best way to do it is to take a Sahara Desert tour from Marrakech.

The Sahara Desert stretches north-south along Morocco’s eastern border with neighboring Algeria, covering an area roughly the size of the entire United States. It’s the world’s largest hot desert, with beautiful sand dunes that stretch on seemingly forever.

A Sahara Desert tour gives you the chance to see the Sahara’s sand dunes, meet local Berbers, hang out with camels, and sleep in a desert camp.

Most tours include your overground transfer from Marrakech to Merzouga, which is a small Moroccan town that’s known as a gateway to Erg Chebbi, a huge expanse of Sahara sand dunes north of town.

What to Expect Driving From Marrakech to the Sahara Desert

The drive from Marrakech to Merzouga, which is the entry point to the Sahara Desert, takes about 9 – 11 hours, depending on how often you break. Luckily, there are lots of stops along the way which break up the long drive.

The first stop on the drive from Marrakech to the Sahara is for a view of the High Atlas mountain range.

The mountains serve as a home to some of North Africa’s Berber communities, who live there in remote villages. The High Atlas mountains stretch on for ages, and this is part of why the drive to the Sahara is so long.

the atlas mountains in morocco

Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified village and UNESCO world heritage site that’s a popular stop for tours from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert. Most Moroccans no longer live in Ait Ben Haddou itself, but in a newer village on the other side of the river.

While visiting Ait Ben Haddou, it looked oddly familiar to me. Our local guide explained why: This site has been used as a film location for films since the 1960s, including The Mummy, Gladiator, Prince of Persia, and television show Game of Thrones.

ait ben haddou in morocco

The Dadès Gorges are a series of rugged wadi (an Arabic word for canyon) that were carved out by the Dadès river. The walls of the gorge range from 200 to 500 meters high, and appear in various colors.

On your way to visit the Sahara Desert, it is necessary to drive through these gorges. Most tours will make a couple stops to take in the beautiful views, and to walk around the Dadès Gorges.

On my tour, I learned that some parts of the gorges are used to grow roses, which are then used to produce rose water. If you have the chance, buy a rose water product to bring home with you!

a road weaving through dades gorge in southern morocco

The Todgha Gorges are limestone river wadi, carved out by the Dadès and Todgha rivers. Driving through the Todgha Gorge was super exciting with its winding roads and huge cliffs. Most tours include a stop in the gorge so you can rest, wander around, and take some photos.

The main thing to know about a Sahara Desert tour from Marrakech is that you’ll be doing lots of driving. But the drive is worth it.

As you drive more and more south from Marrakech, past the Atlas Mountains and gorges, the landscape becomes more flat. You’ll start to see rocky terrain mixed with pockets of sand. As you enter the desert region, you might spot a Berber person, walking along with a procession of camels.

And eventually, the rocky desert turns to golden sand. When you start to see sand dunes, it means you’ve reached the Sahara!

Once you reach the Sahara, you’ll make a final stop in Merzouga. This is a town near the border with Algeria. It’s from here that you’ll depart on your desert safari into the Sahara.

Most tours arrive in the late afternoon, so that you head into the Sahara when the sun is starting to set. This way, it isn’t as hot.

I made sure to stock up on water in Merzouga. There will be plenty of roadside shops where you can buy a couple liters to bring with you. Lastly, you’ll be brought to a warehouse where you can leave your bigger luggage for the night.

On these Sahara Desert tours you spend just one night in the desert, and so it doesn’t make sense to bring all your luggage. You’ll just bring a backpack with what you need for the night.

It’s here that your Berber guides will arrive to bring you to the desert camp. On my tour, the guides were super friendly, helping us tie scarves around our heads to protect us from the sun.

The guides then bring you over to the camels! These animals were larger than I’d imagined, and full of character.

Camels appear always to be smiling, and seemingly are always chewing. One of the Berbers explained that camels regurgitate their food so that they can continue to chew it. This is called chewing the cud, and it helps them to digest.

At this point, you’ll be helped onto a camel that you’ll ride into the Sahara to your desert camp. The journey in takes about an hour.

Now, I need to make a note about camel riding and responsible animal tourism . In general, the most responsible way to choose activities that are observation only. This is something I learned after I went on this trip. If I were to do it again, I would ask to walk alongside the camels rather than ride.

After about an hour of walking over sand dunes, you’ll arrive at the Sahara desert camp. I stayed in a budget camp, and so I can only share what that camp was like. We were shown around the camp tents: the main tent where we would eat, and various smaller tents where we would sleep. It was a permanent camp, and it was clear that the camp serviced an ongoing cycle of tourists, there for one or two nights.

a sahara desert camp with tents in the middle of the sahara near merzouga

After you’ve settled into the camp, it’s time to enjoy the desert! You’re allowed to wander off into the dunes. I recommend taking your shoes off so you can feel the warm sand on your feet while watching the sun set over the desert.

Climbing the massive Sahara sand dunes is a work out – I see now why desert survival is notoriously difficult. I found the climb up a dune was difficult, but it was worth the fun of leaping and bounding back down them!

After the sun sets, the camp comes together to eat dinner together while chatting with the Berber guides. Following dinner, there is a desert bonfire. You can lay in the sand and take in a view of the stars that’s like no other.

The Berbers in our camp stayed awake all night to watch over the camels. Many people in my group stayed up with them, but I tucked myself into bed eventually for a short sleep. At sunrise, you’re woken up to pack up and get back on the camels for the ride back to Merzouga.

Tips For Your Sahara Desert Tour From Marrakech

Going on a Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech is an unforgettable experience, but it can sometimes be an uncomfortable trip. There is lots of driving, and at some times of the year, it can be uncomfortably hot.

Here are some tips to keep in mind for your Sahara Desert tour.

The summer months in Morocco (June – August) can be excruciatingly hot, and from what I was told during this period the trips to the Sahara tend to be shorter because the heat in the desert is unbearable. For pleasant weather, aim to go in the spring (April & May) or fall (September & October).

The winter months are a good time to visit if you don’t mind cooler weather – there will be way less tourists, which helps reduce overtourism .

Regardless of the time of year, deserts do get cold at night. Be sure to pack a sweater and long pants to wear while you’re sleeping, so you get a comfortable night of rest while sleeping in the Sahara Desert.

What not to do in Morocco ? Don’t be ignorant of local customs. Morocco is a conservative nation, specifically when it comes to gender roles. Women dress very modestly and tend to take on domestic duties. Although it can admittedly be very frustrating to adjust to these customs, it’s important to do when you’re a guest in another country.

I think it is best as a visitor to educate yourself and be respectful of local tradition. It’s a good idea to dress modestly (loose pants, shoulders and chest always covered) and carry a light scarf with you to cover your head, if needed.

Once you’ve left Marrakech, many toilets will not supply toilet paper, so if this is a comfort that you can’t bear to live without, make sure to bring your own tissue. When you are out at the Sahara camp, there will not be toilets (time to squat in the sand!).

You have the option to stay in Merzouga after the Sahara, return to Marrakech, or book a tour that brings you onward to Fes.

I opted to travel from the Sahara north, to spend 4 days in Fes . I went by private taxi, because returning back to Marrakech did not make sense for my itinerary. I regret that I didn’t book a tour that went to Fes, but at the time I didn’t actually know these existed.

a smiling camel with desert behind it

The bus driver that drove my group from Marrakech to the Sahara was a man of few words, but many exaggerations. When we asked how long the drive would be he always told us, “1 hour, we will be there soon.”

I quickly learned that this answer was a prime example of Moroccan time: his time estimates were meaningless. Sometimes 1 hour meant 5, other times 1 hour meant 10 minutes.

Regardless of the long drive and all the Morrocan time answers, the trip to the Sahara was absolutely worth it. The Sahara Desert truly is special.

What an unforgettable adventure! This is right up on my list of must-do experiences. Really smart tips too. Especially about the TP 🙂

If you’re ever going to head off an do anything remotely like this again, TAKE ME WITH YOU PLEASE!

' src=

Sounds like a bucket list item to me! Interesting how you observed that certain aspects of the trip were things we tend to over-romanticize, but you still loved it on the whole.

' src=

I have always wanted to see the Sahara! It’s in my 40 before 40 list actually. Did you do anything in the Atlas Mountains? I want to hike them, but need more information first.

' src=

I didn’t do any hiking in the Atlas Mountain range, only in the Todgha Gorge and some other gorges. But in talking with other travellers I learned that Ait Bouguemez is a great region to trek in, and if you’re up to a greater challenge, you can hike Mount Toubkal (Morocco’s highest peak at 4,167 meters). Researching those regions might be a good starting point!

This would be such a fun adventure! I visited a place in California that reminded me of the sand dunes like this, it was totally unexpected to see in CALIFORNIA! This is definitely a bucket list experience that I hope to complete in my lifetime! Thanks for sharing 🙂

California has such incredible landscapes! I am in love with deserts, and so California is on the bucket list for sure.

What an adventure! And sleeping in the Sahara is so unusual. The sand dunes are lovely. And your photos have a nice element of fun to them!

I was so excited to read this since my boyfriend and I were just talking about this last weekend! We’re tentatively planning to tour Morocco including sleeping in the Sahara next September. What a great adventure you had!

This well-organized, spectacular 3-day journey from Marrakesh to Merzouga was unforgettable! Lahcen was wonderful as our guide for myself and my two children, ages 17 and 21. He was incredibly informative and professional, making the entire trip enjoyable. Although there’s quite a bit of driving required to see everything in such a short timeframe, it was absolutely worth it. We felt safe throughout, thanks to Lahcen’s skilled driving. The dunes and camel riding were the standout highlights of our trip. We can’t wait to return and explore more of Morocco—hopefully soon!

What a fantastic way to explore a vast area of Morocco with a private driver/guide. Hassan, our guide, was outstanding. He spoke quite good English and was very accommodating to our eclectic requests. “Can we stop and go in that marketplace? Of course!” “Can we visit that nomad family on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere? Of course!” The journey through the Atlas Mountains was both stunning and fascinating, offering views of Berber villages and ancient Kasbahs. A major highlight was the camel ride (around an hour with stops) to our Tent Camp in the desert. At night, the stars were incredible to behold while lying on a dune. Our tent was quite comfortable, complete with an in-tent shower and toilet. The food was tasty as well. The only drawback was that the tent became very warm at night, lacking any airflow or fan. In hindsight, we regret not upgrading to the luxury air-conditioned tent, which would have made our stay even more comfortable. There were many beautiful stops throughout the trip. The drive back on the last day was long (9 hours), but overall, I highly recommend this experience.

We opted for a private tour for our group of 4, and we had a great time. The long hours in the car were made much more comfortable by having the minivan exclusively for us. Our driver, Abdel, was not only cautious on the road but also exceptionally kind to us (thank you, Adbel!). The tour itself was quite enjoyable, with the desert arrival being a highlight. The camp accommodation was also excellent. Despite a misunderstanding, Marrakech Desert Trips handled it remarkably well. Their assistance is top-notch, so you can trust them without any concerns.

Oliver Reed

We had an incredible three-day adventure exploring the southeastern region of Morocco. This tour goes beyond just the Sahara and the desert camp – we encountered numerous breathtaking places and experiences that will leave lasting memories. Choosing a favorite among them is impossible. Our skilled driver and guide, Hassan, remained composed, friendly, and helpful throughout. He not only ensured our safety while taking us to these impressive locations but also generously shared insights and patiently answered our questions. We highly recommend this tour (we opted for a private one) and Hassan as a driver and guide without any hesitation. In short, it was a flawless experience – we only wish we could’ve extended our stay at the desert camp in the erg-chebbi dunes for another day and night.

Chloe Sullivan

The experience was truly incredible. We made several stops at various places during the journey – villages, gorges, oases – and spent the night in a lovely auberge. Everything was flawless.

Moroccans know how to celebrate. There’s always a festival happening somewhere and it’s a great way to experience the culture. Year-round, different regions across the country honor their ethnic heritage with traditional dance, music, and local cuisine.
