Egypt cruises on Nile River and Lake Nasser are of those experiences imperative to take at least once in a lifetime. Nile River has been the lifeline of Egypt since ancient times and the best way to trace the passage of Egypt's history is to follow the course of the river.

Nile cruise itineraries are between the ports of Luxor and Aswan . River cruising is a comfortable, luxury hotel-style way to visit Upper Egypt's archaeological sites. Most voyages on the river depart from Cairo and last between 3 and 7 days (round-trips), rarely over a week. Longer itineraries offer additional hotel stays in both embarkation / disembarkation ports, but also in the companies' privately owned hotel and resort properties located on Egypt's Red Sea coast - in or near the resort towns and port cities Sharm El Sheikh , Hurghada , El Gouna, El Quseir, Makadi Bay, Sokhna (55 km / 35 mi south of Suez ).

Egypt Nile river cruises - CruiseMapper

Nile-based cruise ships - the very boats cruising the mighty river - are generally larger in comparison to typical river cruise ships, for example, to those sailing on European waterways. Each vessel accommodates up to 200 passengers. Similar sized (bigger) riverboats can be only deployed on wider inland waterways, such as Yangtze (in China), or Mississippi (in the USA).

Lake Nasser and Nile river cruises in Egypt

The Nile is a major river in northeastern Africa. This very special north-flowing waterway is generally regarded as the longest in the world at 4258 ml (6853 km). The resources of the Nile are shared by eleven countries, and the river is also the primary water source of Sudan and Egypt.

The Greek historian Herodotus once wrote that "Egypt was the gift of the Nile". Being a precious source of sustenance, Nile provided a crucial role in the evolution of Egyptian civilization. As the river played such an important role, even the ancient calendar was based on the 3 cycles of Nile.

To sail these life-giving waters, surrounded by millennia-old sites, is an unforgettable experience through Egypt’s heritage. Step back in time to explore the ancient wonders of the Great Hypostyle Hall of Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Luxor, as well as temples devoted to Egypt's pantheon of gods and goddesses.

Colourful bazaars, ancient temples, and pyramids, that were already ancient by the time of Cleopatra, only begin to mark the highlights of the unique cruising vacation on Nile River through Egypt. Itineraries commonly include tours of landmarks in Aswan, Cairo, and Luxor, as well as visits to solitary temples, such as Abu Simbel . The Nile River cruise offers plenty of tours, but there is also time to relax while watching this ancient world float by.

Tour Name: Experience Egypt Cultural Sightseeing in 10 Days

This was the trip of a lifetime that I was able to have with my eldest son - an absolutely Read More amazing experience. To be able to actually see the places and artifacts that I had read about and studied was truly phenomenal. Our hotels were great, the travel to and from sites was completely taken care of, we never felt unsafe or left to our own devices, and the itinerary was just right. But what made the experience so fab was our two guides - Mahmoud Nour in Luxor/Aswan/Abu Simbel and "Max" in Cairo/Memphis/Saqqara. They taught us history and context as it related to each site we visited and they indulged my myriad questions. They were both so incredibly knowledgeable and my questions were never ignored or unanswered. In addition, they shared their culture with us and treated us to some awesome dining experiences. We were reminded that Egypt is more than just ancient ruins. I would recommend without reservation this tour experience. And "hats off" to Mahmoud and Max!!! I left feeling like I had made some great new friends. And I can't wait to try some home-made kushari. Read Less

The entire experience was smooth from start to finish. Both Mahmoud and Max spoke excellent English, were extremely knowledgeable, and went out of their way to ensure our experience was everything we hoped it would be. This was the second time I have used ETP, and I will continue to recommend them to anyone who expresses any interest in exploring Egypt. We especially liked that our tour group was limited to only our party, which meant we got one-on-one attention at all the sites, and allowed us to get answers to all our questions. And for those of you who are worried about safety or health in Egypt, in our experience it was extremely safe, and we never had any issues related to COVID-19. Nile River Small Ship Cruises

Adventure Cruises in Nile River

Welcome to the land of the Pharaohs and the majestic Nile River, the longest river in the world. Embark on a Nile River cruise and discover Egypt's rich history, culture, and natural beauty. From ancient temples and tombs to stunning landscapes and exciting adventure activities, a Nile River cruise has something for everyone.

About Nile River Cruises

A Nile River cruise is a popular way to explore Egypt and for a good reason. The Nile River has been the lifeblood of Egypt for thousands of years, and many of the country's most famous historical sites are along its banks. A Nile River cruise allows you to visit these sites comfortably and in style without the hassle of navigating the country's often chaotic roads and public transportation.

Small ship cruises are an especially popular option for the Nile River, as they offer a more personalized experience and the opportunity to visit more remote areas that larger ships cannot reach.

Cruise itineraries vary, but most Nile River cruises begin in either Aswan or Luxor and typically last between three and seven nights. During the cruise, you will visit some of Egypt's most iconic sites, such as the Temple of Karnak, Valley of the Kings, and Abu Simbel. Many itineraries also include stops at lesser-known sites, allowing you to discover hidden gems.

In addition to exploring historical sites, many Nile River cruises offer adventure activities such as hot air balloon rides, camel treks, and snorkeling in the Red Sea. Whether you're looking to soak up the sun on deck or get your adrenaline pumping with a thrilling excursion, a Nile River cruise has something for everyone.

Best Time to Cruise the Nile River

The best time to cruise the Nile River is during the winter months, from November to February. The weather is mild and pleasant during this time, with temperatures averaging between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit (15 and 26 degrees Celcius). This is also the peak tourist season so you can expect larger crowds at popular sites.

If you're looking to avoid the crowds and save money, consider cruising the Nile River during the shoulder season, which runs from March to May and from September to October. During these months, the weather is still mild, but there will be fewer tourists, allowing for a more peaceful and authentic experience.

From Where Do Nile River Cruises Depart?

Nile River cruises typically depart from either Aswan or Luxor. Aswan is located in southern Egypt and is a popular starting point for cruises that travel north to Luxor. Aswan has many iconic sites, including the Temple of Philae and the Unfinished Obelisk.

Luxor , located in central Egypt, is Nile River cruises' other main starting point. Luxor is known as the "world's greatest open-air museum" and is home to some of Egypt's most famous historical sites, including the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Karnak.

TUI River Cruises launches second ship on the Nile

Author: Lucy Abbott

Published on: 19 September 2024

Updated on: 19 September 2024

TUI River Cruises has launched TUI Bahareya, the line's second ship on the Nile

The launch of TUI Bahareya comes after the successful sales of TUI Al Horeya , TUI River Cruises first ship on the Nile.

The ship will sail down the River Nile in winter 2025.

Like it's predecessor, TUI Bahareya will be a newly refurbished five-star ship – with Bahareya meaning 'belongs to the river' in Arabic.

The ship will accommodate 136 passengers and 68 cabins, sailing two itineraries in Egypt. There will be two direct, non-stop flights a week operating from London Gatwick and Manchester to Luxor.

Licensed Egyptologists will be onboard every itinerary, with two excursions included within the price – the Temple of Horus in Edfu and the Kom Ombo temple.

TUI River Cruises' newest ship

TUI Bahareya will be the sixth ship to join the fleet.

Head of TUI River Cruises Katy Berzins said: “This ship signifies our continued growth as a relatively new River cruise brand, and we are confident that given sales for our first Nile cruise, the launch of TUI Bahareya will go down really well with current and prospective customers.

TUI Bahareya will offer a different culturally immersive experience onboard and will allow customers to get a taste of Egypt through its modern Arabic inspired décor, cuisine, activities and entertainment onboard.”

Onboard, the ship will feature a top-deck swimming pool, a massage tent, an entertainment area, restaurant, al-fresco dining and a boutique shop.

The new 'Ancient Gods and famous Pharaohs' itinerary will set sail on November 4, 2025. The second itinerary 'Legends of the Nile' will set sail on December 2, 2025.

The Top River Cruise Lines

If you'd like to take a cruise but aren't interested in the hustle and bustle of a massive ocean liner, consider a river cruise. River cruises offer the chance to visit lesser-known ports around the world, thanks to the small size and maneuverability of the vessels. These sailings are known to provide exceptional, personalized service, as most welcome fewer than 200 guests at a time. On top of that, you'll spend the majority of your trip exploring a different port each day, as most destinations along the waterways are fairly close together.

Read on to discover the best river cruise lines around the world, with details about where they sail, the number of passengers you can expect onboard, a snapshot of amenities and experiences, and sentiment from recent travelers.

CroisiEurope Cruises

Viking Longship Idun on the Main River in front of Johannisburg Palace, Aschaffenburg, Germany.

Number of passengers:  52 to 386 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, U.S.

Viking's roughly 60 ships – known as longships – traverse major rivers across Europe, including the Danube , the Rhine, the Douro and more. Other popular routes sail Egypt's Nile River as well as the Mississippi River , and newer expeditions include a series of Great Lakes itineraries.

What to expect: Travelers may be familiar with Viking Ocean Cruises , which operates larger ocean voyages with an emphasis on opulent accommodations and diverse enrichment activities. Viking's river cruises follow a similar road map, with meals, one shore excursion per port and Wi-Fi access (where applicable) included in the base fare. Other amenities and activities span guest lectures, cooking demonstrations, musical performances, libraries, outdoor decks and more. Select Viking riverboats are also equipped with swimming pools, while cabins feature minibars, premium toiletries, heated bathroom floors, purified water and TVs.

On board, you can expect to find mostly English-speaking passengers. Viking's price point generally attracts older crowds in the 55-plus age group, and travelers must be at least 18 years old to cruise on the line.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers thoroughly enjoyed their experience with Viking, praising the well-organized shore excursions, top-notch service and comfortable rooms. Some, however, expressed disappointment with the food on board, and a handful of others encountered issues with the air travel Viking arranged.

Number of passengers: 32 to 158 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, South America

Uniworld offers luxurious sailings in historic cities across central Europe, France , Italy , Portugal , India, Egypt, South America, Vietnam and Cambodia.

What to expect: Its 17 ships (with another on the way for 2025) aim to create the feel of a boutique hotel with stylish decor, antique artwork and specialty restaurants. The ships hold an average capacity of 120 cruisers, and the company boasts one of the highest staff-to-guest ratios in the industry: about one crew member for every two travelers.

Stateroom amenities vary by vessel but may include marble bathrooms, Egyptian cotton linens, French balconies, iPod docking stations, Nespresso coffee machines, rainfall showers and more. The line's all-inclusive rates cover meals, alcoholic beverages, select excursions, gratuities, onboard fitness classes and Wi-Fi access, on top of entertainment and enrichment classes. Uniworld prides itself on its top-notch cuisine, which is made with local ingredients sourced from the ports on your itinerary and also includes vegetarian and vegan options.

Uniworld's typical clientele tends to be active travelers in their 50s or 60s who reside in North America, the U.K. and Australia . The river cruise line has select itineraries aimed at families, LGBTQ cruisers and solo travelers.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers offered plenty of praise for Uniworld's voyages, complimenting the stylish accommodations, attentive staff and fascinating excursions. Still, some past cruisers felt the guest rooms were small and the overall experience was not worth the high price point.

American Cruise Lines ship on river during sunset.

Courtesy of American Cruise Lines

Number of passengers: 90 to 180 Sails to:  U.S.

As the name suggests, American Cruise Lines sails exclusively on the rivers and coastlines of the United States. Popular cruises visit destinations along the Mississippi River, on the Hudson River, throughout New England , and lining the Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The line also tours Alaska , the Southeast coast including Florida , and the Puget Sound between Washington state and the Canadian border.

What to expect: American Cruise Lines operates more than 20 relatively new small ships and river vessels (the average ship is about 4 years old), ranging from modern riverboats to small coastal ships to authentic paddlewheelers. Comfortable cabins can accommodate up to three people per room, and all ships offer single staterooms designed exclusively for solo travelers . Each room boasts picture windows, a spacious bathroom and – in some cases – a private balcony. In the ships' public spaces, cruisers can enjoy daily onboard entertainment like jazz and blues performances, as well as presentations by historians and area experts.

The line promises an all-American experience. As such, you can expect to find American staff aboard the American-built ships as well as food that pays homage to the destinations you will visit, from New Orleans -style andouille sausage gumbo to New England-inspired seafood boils. Complimentary cocktails and hors d'oeuvres are served every night prior to dinner; all meals, snacks, and wine and beer are included in the base fare. Shore excursions are not typically included in the rate, though some itineraries offer one complimentary outing per port.

Passengers on American Cruise Lines tend to lean North American and are typically mature retired travelers.

What travelers say: Most recent cruisers enjoyed their experience, highlighting the great shore excursions and friendly staff. However, some flagged issues with cabin cleanliness and noted the ships could use an interior refresh.

AmaWaterways cruise ship on river near town.

Courtesy of AmaWaterways

Number of passengers:  28 to 196 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, South America

Consider a river cruise with AmaWaterways, whether you're looking to sail through the heart of Europe or seeking a once-in-a-lifetime adventure touring destinations like Vietnam, Egypt, South Africa or Colombia. A family-owned business founded in 2002, AmaWaterways operates 29 river cruise boats that welcome 150 passengers on average.

The cruise line aims to provide excursion-rich experiences and offers unique themed sailings for passengers with certain interests. Wine-themed voyages are perfect for oenophiles wishing to explore some of Europe's most popular wine regions, while a concierge golf program will transport passengers from one famous golf course to the next. Or, opt for a holiday river cruise to visit magical Christmas markets around Europe. In 2025, AmaWaterways will offer four Soulful Experiences Black history-themed itineraries.

What to expect: On board, guests can expect cabins suitable for couples or single travelers, as well as a set amount of connectible rooms designed for multigenerational families. Staterooms are spacious, with perks like bathrobes, slippers and plush bedding. Cabins can feature up to two balconies with AmaWaterways' twin balcony design, which allows for a full, step-out balcony alongside a French balcony with sliding glass doors. In-room Wi-Fi is complimentary, and guests will have access to movies and music on demand.

Outside of their cabins, passengers can enjoy amenities spanning small pools, sun decks, fitness equipment, a hair salon, massage services and more.

AmaWaterways primarily attracts North American travelers in their 50s who enjoy taking part in active shore excursions that involve walking or cycling. Passengers from the U.K. and Australia sail on this river cruise line as well. You can expect to find a mix of couples, families and solo cruisers – including a growing number of millennial travelers – on your vessel, thanks to AmaWaterways' diverse cabin offerings. Adventures by Disney charters AmaWaterways ships for select sailings each year as well.

What travelers say: Most recent travelers enjoyed their overall experience, praising the scenic destinations and nicely appointed cabins. However, some were disappointed in the food and felt the journey was overpriced.

Avalon Waterways sails 18 riverboats along popular thoroughfares like the Danube, the Rhone, the Seine, the Nile, the Rhine, the Moselle, the Mekong and more.

What to expect: Launched in 2004, Avalon stands out for its spacious vessels – known as Suite Ships – which feature some of the largest rooms in the river cruise industry and beds that face wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows, providing panoramic views. Additional stateroom perks include complimentary breakfast in bed, L'Occitane toiletries, sitting areas, ample storage space and mattress toppers.

Across the ship, passengers can enjoy amenities like a sun deck with lounge chairs, whirlpools and a game area, in addition to numerous restaurants and bars and a 24-hour self-serve coffee station. You will also have your pick of Classic, Active or Discovery shore excursions – ranging from standard tours with a local guide to hiking outings along a hilltop castle – depending on your interests and physical abilities.

Avalon Waterways attracts English-speaking cruisers from a variety of countries, typically in their 50s and 60s. However, children ages 8 and older are welcome on board (though there are no designated kids clubs), and some voyages draw younger or older passengers.

What travelers say: Most recent reviews are positive, with travelers highlighting the friendly, knowledgeable staff and tasty food.

Number of passengers: 84 to 130 Sails to:  Europe

Travel company Tauck wears multiple hats: It operates small-ship voyages around the world, land tours across seven continents, small group journeys for an average of 24 travelers at a time, family tours and – finally – European river cruises. Take your pick from nine river vessels to explore popular waterways like the Douro, the Moselle, the Rhine, the Danube and the Rhone.

What to expect: All-inclusive fares cover shore excursions, onboard activities and entertainment, gratuities, beverages and more. Plus, Tauck offers exclusive access to unforgettable experiences like wine tastings at private vineyards and gala dinners in historic castles.

More than 80% of Tauck's staterooms feature French balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing for excellent views. Other in-room amenities may include adjustable climate controls, satin linens, pillow-top mattresses, terry cloth robes and more. Outside of your cabin, you'll find perks such as a sun deck, a putting green, enrichment programs like cooking demonstrations, a fitness center and complimentary bikes for onshore exploring.

Tauck caters to affluent, English-speaking cruisers – primarily Americans in their 50s and older – though you may also find families with adult children on board. The line appeals most to travelers who prefer all the details of their trip to be taken care of for them, versus those who like to plan activities independent of the cruise line.

What travelers say: Recent passengers generally speak highly of their Tauck river cruise experiences, pointing to the exceptional level of organization and spacious, luxurious accommodations. Others said they were underwhelmed for the price.

Number of passengers: 84 to 180 Sails to:  Europe, Asia

Previously known as Emerald Waterways, Emerald Cruises transports travelers across some of the most popular rivers in Europe and Asia, including the Danube, the Rhine, the Douro and the Mekong.

What to expect: The cruise fare covers all meals, beverages with lunch and dinner, daily shore excursions – which may include more physically rigorous options called EmeraldACTIVE – Wi-Fi access and gratuities.

Emerald operates nine river vessels, all of which boast luxurious public spaces and accommodations with en suite bathrooms and flat-screen TVs. Common-area amenities span heated indoor pools, sun decks, spa and wellness facilities, and a variety of eateries. Onboard fitness classes are available, as are other forms of entertainment. On shore, cruisers can borrow bicycles to explore historic city centers.

Typical clientele aboard Emerald Cruises' voyages includes American and British passengers around retirement age, though some younger travelers may make an appearance as well. Children 12 and older are permitted on board and on tours, but there are no kids clubs or designated activities for younger cruisers. Special rooms and dinner reservations are available for solo travelers.

What travelers say: Cruisers on recent sailings – especially first-time sailors – enjoyed their experiences on Emerald Cruises. High points included the attentive crew members and the stress-free booking and planning process. However, some felt that customer service and communication were subpar.

Number of passengers:  68 to 163 Sails to: Europe, Asia

From the Danube to the Mekong, Australian travel company Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours offers lavish, all-inclusive river sailings with an emphasis on customization. The more upscale sister brand of Emerald Cruises, Scenic affords travelers the opportunity to do as much or as little as they want while on board and ashore.

What to expect: Enrichment activities are hand-picked by the line's "Journey Designers," and vessels provide a top-notch level of service thanks to their high crew-to-passenger ratios. In fact, each passenger receives a designated butler who can complete nightly turndowns and make laundry arrangements, among other tasks.

Spacious suites on board are larger than those on most other riverboats (ranging from 161 to 517 square feet). High-tech balcony controls allow lodgers to let in as much air as they'd like with the touch of a button. Cruisers will also enjoy special in-room touches like pillow menus, slippers and robes.

When it comes to dining, Scenic sources local ingredients and culinary inspiration from the ports visited on the itinerary to provide an authentic experience. All meals are included in the base cruise fare, along with beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi access, shore excursions and electric bicycle usage in select destinations.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers were pleased with their experiences aboard Scenic's vessels, praising the spacious cabins, pampering butler service, and knowledgeable crew members and tour guides. However, some travelers were particularly disappointed with the food.

Helwin Goetzinger | Courtesy of CroisiEurope

Number of passengers: 16 to 200 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa

CroisiEurope is a family-run French cruise line that has been in business since 1976. This line has more than 50 ships and barges that sail to countries around the world, including Egypt, Cambodia and Spain . Unusual in river cruising, the line operates two custom-built ships that sail on Lake Kariba in southern Africa. Additionally, CroisiEurope has a division that sells barge cruises throughout France on six different canals, such as Burgundy or Provence.

What to expect: CroisiEurope is known for its wide range of destinations and is one of the only river cruise lines that operates custom-built ships on Germany 's Elbe river, the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers in Spain and Portugal, and Venice 's canals. Onboard accommodations are relatively basic, which keeps the cruise fare to a budget-friendly minimum. The cruise line aims to provide the best value for money in the cruise industry. Cuisine is focused on French food with some local flair in the main dining room, which is included in the cruise fare.

The passenger mix on a CroisiEurope cruise is relatively international, featuring large contingencies from France, Germany, the U.K. and North America. Announcements are typically given in both French and English. The cruise line sees a mix of older couples and groups as well as younger families, depending on the itinerary and time of year.

What travelers say: Several cruisers felt some of CroisiEurope's river ships are due for a refurbishment, and that internet connectivity leaves a lot to be desired. Still, others maintain that the experience was superb and highlighted the reasonable prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Size:  River cruise ships are smaller in size and the number of passengers they can accommodate,   with one lounge and one main dining room being a typical setup.
  • Atmosphere:  The overall vibe on a river cruise is more relaxed and far less busy than that of an ocean liner.
  • Onboard entertainment:  River cruising is notoriously sleepy at night, with a focus instead on local enrichment like cooking demonstrations or liqueur tastings. Due to the busy schedule of port calls and excursions, most passengers are tired after a long day of sightseeing and don't mind a lack of nightlife.
  • Excursions:  Most of your time on a river cruise is spent out exploring the destinations, which can sometimes be two stops in a single day. Passengers can choose from a variety of activities in port – including biking, kayaking and hiking – or explore the destination at a leisurely pace.
  • Cuisine:  Cuisine tends to be focused on local specialties but is prepared to accommodate predominantly American tastes. Not every river cruise line offers unlimited drinks, but the majority include beer and wine at lunch and dinner, often showcasing regional varieties.
  • Price:  River cruising typically comes at a much higher price point than ocean-based itineraries.

Note that inclusions can vary by cruise line. For example, Viking rates – while not fully all-inclusive – cover beer and wine at meals and one tour per day, while gratuities and other drink packages are left to the discretion of the guest.

Avalon Waterways, on the other hand, offers a number of included tours in every port on select itineraries that range from cultural or culinary-focused to active.

In terms of inclusions and service ratios (the number of crew on board to guests), the following river cruise lines are considered some of the most luxurious:

One cruise line makes river cruising relevant for Black travellers. But where are the rest?

nile river cruise ships.com

Writer Heather Greenwood Davis and her mother in Paris, France. Olga in Paris for Flytographer/Supplied

Until my sixth river cruise I didn’t realize that I hadn’t truly relaxed on the previous five.

It’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy them all. River cruising – with its smaller ships and centre-of-town-ports – is one of my favourite ways to explore.

But on this, my third trip with AmaWaterways, but my first on the Seine River in France, I achieved a level of ease that I’d never felt before.

This was a Soulful Experiences cruise – a sailing dedicated to exploring Black history and culture through lectures, food, music and historical landmarks. And as a result, 99 per cent of my shipmates were Black. I knew when I booked the cruise that it would make the experience different. But somewhere between doing the Electric Slide line dance at the welcome party and joining an excursion to learn about the heartbreaking fate of Senegalese soldiers during the Second World War in Lyon, I realized that it would be transformational as well.

Code-switching is when a person, intentionally or not, changes their behaviour to suit their circumstance. Everyone does it. That’s why you probably don’t twerk during a meeting at the office, even though you did it on your vacation booze cruise. For Black people, that shift is often also necessary outside the workplace. Even on vacation, you can find yourself deciding to protect your peace rather than to lash out in response to a passenger’s microaggressions or correcting the tour guide who suggests enslaved people “loved” their owners. (Yes, it’s happened to me.)

But on a cruise with predominantly Black travellers, race matters less. And on a cruise with people of various racial backgrounds who all want to learn about Black history, the stress I’ve unknowingly carried can be put down completely.

nile river cruise ships.com

Soulful Experiences began in August, 2023. The first cruise sold out almost immediately. AMA Waterways/Supplied

The sailings are the brainchild of Jazzmine Douse, an 11-year AmaWaterways employee and Black woman who heard from Black travel advisers that their luxury-seeking Black clients didn’t feel river cruises wanted them.

“Traditionally river cruising has attracted a demographic of more mature, wealthy, retired and typically Caucasian Americans,” Douse says. “There has been a lack of representation in this particular luxury river-cruising space.”

In 2019, Douse took her concerns – and the idea that cruises could be more intentional about inclusion – to the cruise line’s owners. And AmaWaterways started diversifying their brochure and online images. Then in August, 2023, Soulful Experiences was born. The first cruise sold out almost immediately.

During my voyage, passenger Brenda Moore said that her travel agent showed her photos with “folks that looked like me” and it piqued her interest. On board, she said, the cruise lived up to the hype. “I had so much fun meeting and talking to Black folks from all backgrounds, ages and travel experiences.”

Still, as far as river cruises go, there’s no question that Ama’s offering is an outlier.

A 2017 Cruise Lines International Association report, one of very few that offers race-based statistics, found that cruisers who identify themselves as Black or African-American overwhelmingly choose ocean sailings.

nile river cruise ships.com

Herma Greenwood in Marseille, France. The Globe and Mail

I was unable to find any Canadian race-based surveys on cruising, but travel marketing company MMGY released a report in 2021 based on a survey that canvassed 3,635 Black leisure travellers from the United States, Canada, France, Germany and U.K. They found 40 per cent of Canadians surveyed “are more likely to visit a destination if they see Black representation in travel advertising.” That number jumps to 54 per cent for Americans. Cruising is popular with Black travellers, but it’s usually done in spaces Black people have carved out; they rent the boats and sell the tickets. Radio DJ Tom Joyner’s Fantastic Voyage and travel advisor Patricia Yarbrough’s Festival at Sea are among the long-time, weeklong private cruise charters that are consistently sold out.

But the Soulful Experience offering is unique because it is a regularly scheduled sailing, created and sold by the cruise line. They are the only luxury river-cruise company doing this. The “Colors of Provence” itinerary is available throughout the year, but when it operates under the Soulful Experiences name, it overlays a Black history focus on the guided tours. Cruisers still go to Montmartre but examine its connection to the Harlem renaissance. Cruisers still visit Avignon but can choose to see African artists’ works at Fondation Blachère, as well as touring the traditional Papal palace.

nile river cruise ships.com

Some of the cruisers on board the Soulful Experiences sailing. The Globe and Mail

Leaning into more of a region’s history means there’s an opportunity to tell harder truths.

Near Lyon, my tour group stood in shocked horror on the soil where close to 50 African men were slaughtered as part of the Chasselay massacre in June, 1940. The murdered were all members of an elite squad of Senegalese sharp shooters sent to help France during the Second World War. When captured by the Germans, white soldiers were taken as prisoners of war. But Black soldiers were literally blown apart by German tank fire. (Those who survived the shooting were run over by those same tanks to ensure the deed was done.)

“My God,” one cruiser whispers as photos of the young Black men are circulated.

Still, the horrors, so hard to hear, are somehow made lighter because we’re carrying them together.

On my sailing, all but about six of my fellow cruisers are Black. Prices start at about US$5,400 and at one point, in response to a joke about whether there was a doctor in the house, a quarter of the room raised their hand. This group belies the travel-industry myth that Black travellers can’t afford luxury travel.

Douse sails with each Soulful itinerary, acting alongside Ama’s Black South African cruise manager, Crystal August. Chef Bri Bullard, a Black Bahamian chef from Toronto, created several meals for guests, sharing the story of each dish’s Black African culinary roots as she went. Guests murmured in surprise when she mentioned that many of her menu choices were directly linked to enslaved ancestors. Jambalaya, she said, originated as a take on an African stew that combined leftover rice grown on the plantations where enslaved people laboured, with the scraps of leftovers afforded to them. This was a seemingly small touch but it resonated with guests on board.

“I have people stopping me every day, multiple times throughout the day to say, ‘I can’t tell you the last time I felt this comfortable on a vacation,’ ” Douse says. “When you hear these things you’re like, ‘Okay, we’ve got to keep going.’ ”

But that could prove challenging. AmaWaterways recently announced four Soulful Experience sailings for 2025, including a new offering in Colombia. However, there is no guarantee that the cruises will continue: Customer demand and corporate satisfaction will determine their fate. Without broader race-based statistics, it’s impossible to make the case that Black travellers are making a direct financial impact on the river-cruising industry. Its success may be evident to those on board, but its survival remains uncertain.

“I’m very proud of what we’ve done so far,” Douse says. “In order to protect it, we have to show up.”

AmaWaterways Soulful Experience sailings include an 11-night Egypt & the Nile sailing (May, 2025, starting at $7,974 a person, double occupancy), a 10-night Colours of Provence (August, 2025, starting at $7,164 a person, double occupancy), a seven-night Magic of Colombia (October, 2025, starting at $4,393 a person, double occupancy) and a 10-night Enticing Douro (November, 2024, and 2025, starting at $5,234 a person, double occupancy). Trips include all meals and most activities and excursions. amawaterways.ca/soulful

The writer was a guest of AmaWaterways. It did not review or approve the story before publication.

Three Amazing Ways to Cruise South America

ETA Images September 2024

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Galapagos, Patagonia and Amazon cruises are life-changing experiences in the Southern Hemisphere.

Rebounding from a post-pandemic slump, the cruise industry racked up a record number of passengers for 2023 – more than 31 million passengers around the globe. While large ships that carry as many as 7,600 cruisers accounted for the largest numerical increase, the biggest percentage growth was in the “expedition cruise” sector.

If you’ve never heard that term before, an expedition cruise is a smaller ship (normally under 200 passengers) that explores more adventurous areas, in many cases, places where the larger ships won’t fit.

From the Indonesian archipelago and the South Pacific isles to Canada’s Northwest Passage and the Antarctic, these regions offer ideal conditions for expedition cruises. Yet one of the best places – an area that pioneered small, adventurous cruises many decades ago – is South America.

ETA Images September 2024

Patagonia Anchoring the bottom end of South America, Patagonia boasts spectacular scenery, incredible wildlife and hundreds of pristine islands protected within the confines of huge national parks.

One of the only ways to explore these remote islands is an expedition cruise between Punta Arenas in Southern Chile and Ushuaia on the Argentine side of Tierra del Fuego Island.

Starting out with crossing the fabled Strait of Magellan, southbound ships slowly make their way through the islands. Several times each day, everyone piles into inflatable Zodiac boats for shore excursions led by nature guides.

And they’re all surprisingly different. Thousands of Magellanic penguins raise their chicks on the tiny Tucker Islets. Ainsworth Bay is renowned for its resident elephant seals, as well as a chance to spot majestic birds like the caracara falcon and Andean condor.

Farther south is the Beagle Channel – named for the Royal Navy ship that took Charles Darwin along this same route in 1833 – and a string of frozen, giant tidewater ice sheets called Glacier Alley. Reaching Wulaia Bay, there’s time for a hike through a moss-draped forest to a lofty viewpoint and browse through a small museum with exhibits on the Yaghan people who first settled this island around 10,000 years ago.

For many, the ultimate highlight of the cruise is a visit to legendary Cape Horn, the southernmost tip of South America. Steep wooden stairs lead to a tiny lighthouse atop the island and a chance to meet the lightkeeper and his family, posted to the remote island for an entire year.

Reversing course and heading north, the ship eventually reaches Ushuaia, a town that’s made a remarkable transition from remote penal colony (the old prison is now a museum) to the outdoor adventure sports hub of Tierra del Fuego (hiking, mountain biking, fishing, skiing, snowboarding and more).

Australis Cruises voyages through the Patagonian isles between late September and early April in two modern expedition ships that hold 200 passengers. Rates for the four five-day cruises start at around $1,638 per person.

ETA Images September 2024

The Amazon It may not be the world’s longest (that honor goes to Africa’s Nile), but the Amazon carries more water by volume than any other river and is without a doubt one of the most exotic, adventurous places where you can cruise.

Some of the big cruise companies send ships up the Amazon almost 1,000 miles upriver to Northern Brazil’s Manaus. But the river is so wide at that point (almost two miles) and the area so built up (the city now boasts more than two million people), it’s hard to commune with the Amazonian rainforest.

The best way to get up close and personal with the world’s most celebrated jungle is an expedition cruise farther along the river. Like those that depart from Nauta, a tiny waterfront outpost near Iquitos in the Peruvian Amazon.

Nauta’s claim to fame is that it marks the start of the actual Amazon, the spot where two other mighty watercourses (the Ucayali and Marañón) merge to form one of the world’s largest rivers.

Pacaya–Samiria National Reserve – one of the largest national parks in the entire Amazon Basin – lies just upstream from Nauta.

A typical cruise chugs along the Marañón to secluded Amerindian settlements where you get a glimpse of daily life in the Amazon. But most of the shore landings focus on nature. Pacaya–Samiria is home to millions of creatures, including apex predators like the jaguar and anaconda, although they tend to be wary of humans. This means you’re more likely to see giant river otters, pink river dolphins, sloths, monkeys and a wide variety of tropical birds.

During the daytime, passengers can undertake guided jungle hikes, try their luck at local-style fishing or take a swim in the river. After dark, smaller boats probe tributaries for nocturnal creatures and members of the cruise boat staff entertain passengers with folk songs.

Iquitos-based Jungle Experiences offers cruises along the Ucayali and Marañón in modern riverboats, like the family-oriented, 30-passenger La Perla and luxury 40-passenger Zafiro. Voyages range from four to eight days with rates starting at $1,480 per person.

A Panorama of the Galapagos Islands

Galapagos The most awesome thing about the Galapagos Islands – and there are many – is the fact that most of the animals seem to have no fear of human beings. You’re not allowed to touch the wildlife. But the critters don’t abide by that same restriction: they can waddle, splash or crawl up to you. And many do, curious about these human creatures that walk or swim among them.

In the remote archipelago located around 500 miles off the coast of Ecuador, close encounters of the animal kind are frequent and often life-altering. Sunbathe on a secluded beach with sea lions, snorkel with penguins or those gnarly looking “mini Godzillas” (a.k.a. marine iguanas), or stroll through a cluster of blue-footed boobie nests without the parent birds so much as flinching.

While it is possible to undertake a land-based exploration of the Galapagos – taking day trips around Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal, the two most populated islands – the best way to discover the most intriguing places is a private yacht or small ship cruise.

Normally around a week in length, the itineraries almost always include big Isabella and Fernandina islands with their live volcanoes and vast lava fields, as well as smaller outlying landfalls. They also host creepy colonies of marine and land iguanas.

Formed around a sunken caldera, Genovesa is also called “Bird Island” because thousands of birds nest there, including iconic species like the frigatebird, tropicbird, red-footed booby and Darwin’s finches. Floreana is famed for copious birdlife and its historic post office barrel, started in the 18th century by whalers and other seafarers as a makeshift way to get letters back home during their years at sea.

Flights to the Galapagos depart from Quito or Guayaquil on the Ecuador mainland and touch down at either Balta/Santa Cruz or San Cristóbal, the two departure points for expedition cruises. While the largest vessel can accommodate 90 passengers, most carry 20 or fewer people, making for a very exclusive experience.

Adventures By Disney offers a nine-day, family-oriented Galapagos expedition cruise for kids as young as seven on a 100-passenger ship with rates from $8,999. Enchanted Expeditions explores the archipelago on three luxury motor yachts that carry 14 to 16 passengers, starting from $3,500 for six days.
