Newport, RI

The Vanderbilts, Astors and other tycoons of the industrial revolution built their palatial "summer cottages," many of which are open for touring, in Newport. Examples of historic mansions here include The Breakers, a 70-room Northern Italian palazzo, and The Elms, modeled after an 18th-century French chateau. Newport also is known for its boating and yachting.

The official U.S. currency is the United States dollar (symbol: $). ATM's everywhere.

Major credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are widely used and accepted, even for transactions worth only a few dollars. In fact, in some cases, it may be the only way to make a transaction. Note to overseas visitors: Prices of goods and services always seem lower than they really are, as taxes and gratuities are seldom included.

Most states have a sales tax, ranging from 2.9% to nearly 10% of the retail price; 4-6% is typical. Sales tax is almost never included in posted prices (except for gasoline, and in most states, alcoholic beverages consumed on-premises), but instead will be calculated and added to the total when you pay.

Tipping in America is widely used and expected. While Americans themselves often debate correct levels and exactly who deserves to be tipped, generally accepted standard rates are:

  • Full-service restaurants: 15-20% (Often this is the only income of the wait(ress). Tips are either left in cash or you can add it to the credit card slip) Note: Few restaurants add an automatic service charge, in which case it is up to you how much you tip extra. Check your bill!
  • Taxi drivers, hairdressers, other personal services: 10-15%
  • Bartenders: $1 per drink if inexpensive or 15% of total
  • Bellhops: $1-2 per bag ($3-5 minimum regardless)
  • Hotel doorman: $1 per bag (if they assist), $1 for calling a cab
  • Tour guides: Depending on tour length, size, and overall quality of guided tours; for half day tours or less $5-10 per person, for longer tours $10-20 per person.
  • Private car & limousine drivers: 15-20%
  • Housekeeping in hotels: $1-2 per day for long stays or $5 minimum for very short stays (optional)
  • Food delivery (pizza, etc.): $2-5, possibly more for very large orders

Opening Hours and Holidays:

In major metropolitan areas like New York and Los Angeles, many drugstores and supermarkets are routinely open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, while department stores, shopping centers and most other large retailers are typically open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and often with shorter hours on Sundays - generally 11 a.m. or noon to 5 or 6 p.m. On holidays, the tendency is to remain open (with the exception of the most important holidays like Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day where stores are generally closed)

Where do tenders in Newport dock?

Just wondering where the tender boats dock? I will be in Newport on the Summit on May 3.

The tender dock is located at the southwest side of the intersection of America's Cup Ave (rte 138) and Long Wharf, on the west side or waterside of Perotti Park.

Thanks for the quick reply.

trophy_23

It is a great location, very scenic with the bridge there etc. It is a very short walk from the tender dock to the info center/ bus terminal.

  • 1 month later...

FinelyRetired

Right next door to the Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina...right? That's easy to spot.

Yes, the Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina is the south border of Perrotti Park and the tender dock area.

Thanks for the confirmation, SBtS. That's where we'll dock to meet up with friends coming in on a cruise.

Just be aware that both America's Cup Ave (rte 138) and Long Wharf opposite the tender dock will be congested with waiting tour buses and taxis when a cruise ship is visiting Newport. Police will try to keep local traffic moving. My suggestion is to park at the Newport Visitor's Center which is located one block north of the tender dock and walk to the tender dock, or have your friends walk to the NVC and meet you there.

Assuming you are coming from the north on rte 138, the NVC is on the right side of America's Cup Ave after the first light opposite the ball field and firehouse.

The congestion will lessen after the tours buses have left on the excursions.

Hopkins Cruises to Victory Against Fenton-Fung in Cranston

The incumbent won by 17 points in gop mayoral primary and will face a democrat in november.

Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins celebrates at the St. Mary's Feast Society.

In the marquee race of Rhode Island’s 2024 primary, Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins scored a commanding victory against Republican rival state Rep. Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung, as voters rejected her argument that the city needed change.

Unofficial results showed Hopkins winning 58.5% of the vote, compared with 41.5% for Fenton-Fung.

Fenton-Fung is married to longtime former Cranston Mayor Allan Fung, who remains popular locally, and she scored a big win by beating state Rep. Nicholas Mattiello, the House speaker at the time, in 2020.

However, Cranston voters made their preference clear for Hopkins, who first won election in 2020 with help from the Fungs. Relations later went south between them.

In other races, U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, a Democrat first elected in 2006, cruised past rival Michael Costa with 83.9% of the vote, with 331 of 345 polling places reporting.

State Rep. Patricia Morgan, R-West Warwick, bested conservative activist Ray McKay for the chance to take on Whitehouse in November. With returns from most polling places in, she led with 64.5% of the vote. Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien scored 73.2% of the vote against primary rival Camron Segalla.

In Woonsocket’s nonpartisan primary for mayor, John Ward and Christopher Beauchamp were the top two finishers, meaning they will square off in November.

Voters decided 18 Democratic primaries for the General Assembly.

Rhodes, Greece

Description.

The largest and arguably the most beautiful of the 12 islands forming the Dodecanese, Rhodes has long played a major role in history. Lying just 12 miles off the coast of Turkey, the island straddles the sea-lanes linking Egypt, Southern Europe and the Holy Land. Rhodes Town bears witness to that long history. The ancient city features a classical stadium and the ruins of the Temple of Apollo. The "old" city is a walled town with medieval buildings and streets harking back to the days of the Crusades. The new town is a Mecca of luxury resorts lining the island's picturesque Mandaraki Harbor. The Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, is reputed to have once stood guard over the harbor. Today, the bronze statues of a stag and doe top the two columns marking the harbor entrance.

More about Rhodes, Greece Points of Interest

Once home to the Knights of St. John, this medieval walled city is a living settlement of some 6,000 people who live and work in the same buildings that were used by the knights over 500 years ago.

Built in the 14th century by the Knights of St. John, its fortress defended the town and harbor. Destroyed in 1856 and rebuilt in 1939, it now houses a museum with ancient Greece exhibits.

This medieval road features the lodgings of the Knights of St. John. They represent the seven countries or languages from where the Knights came and lead to the Palace of the Grand Masters.

Above the village rises an awe-inspiring fortress, which was fortified in turn by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Knights of St. John and the Ottomans. Landmarks include Temple of Athena Lindia.

The Church of Panagia (Our Lady) was originally built in 1300, but has been reconstructed several times. With high walls and charming courtyard, it is an enchanting stop on the road to the Acropolis.

Built to symbolize freedom, this bronze statue of the Greek god Helios stood 110' high on a 50' pedestal. Felled by earthquake, huge pieces lay for centuries until the 7th century A.D.

This peak is crowned by the Church of Our Lady, which is built over the ruins of a Greek temple and early Christian catacombs. The barrel-vaulted Chapel of St. George dates from the 15th century.

Although named after a 19th century British admiral, this is the site of ancient Rhodes' acropolis and Hellenistic stadium where the athletic games of Alioi took place to honor the Greek god Ilios.
